Juniors Boot Camp Completed What is Juniors Boot Camp?

This idea was created by Ken Sarge Aylesworth of Renton, WA. Sarge as he s known by in the pocket billiards circle is one of the top Artistic Pool (Trick & Skill/Shot)

Artist in the world, and also a retired Master Sergeant from the Air Force. He was having a discussion with two of the APA Directors for Pierce County in WA and they were

discussing how the kids of today would be pool s future. Michelle and Gene, the two directors asked Sarge what it would cost him to perform a trick shot exhibition for a

Juniors tournament. Well, everything came together and Sarge performed the exhibition on July 26th. This discussion gave (Boot Camp continued on page 7)

By: Clay Skidmore SPOKANE, WA On Labor Day weekend McQ s Billiards held our annual Spokane Open 9-ball Tournament. With 68 players and 3 days to run the event, I was able, for the first time to post start times on the board. That was a great plus for me by not having to answer that question, Clay when do I play? about a (l to r) Edwin Montal (2nd), Clay Skidmore Tournament Director, John Horsfall (1st) thousand times. It also gave the players an ease of mind to be able to leave the building and know exactly when they needed to come back. If I could do it like that for all the events I do here, I would. But Labor Day is the only event all year that I have an extra day. Also with the smaller field, I was able to extend the races to 9 on both sides. The matches moved along nicely and the start times stayed right on track. With a field of champions there were a lot of good matches to watch all weekend. This years event also brought in a few new faces. Barry Emerson took advantage of a trip to see relatives in Seattle, into a 3rd place finish in Spokane. Barry opened with a first round win against Dave Martin 9-2. He then went on to defeat Tyler Luce 9-6, John Duclos 9-5, Soud Alabdoulrazaq 9-4 and Bernie Mikkelsen 9-4 to earn a spot in

Dr Cues Changes Tour Stop Date To January 2004 Due to remodeling complications, Jeff Robertson of Dr Cue Billiards has changed their McDermott tour stop dates from November 1st - 2nd to January 10th - 11th, 2004. Dr Cue s is adding a kitchen so that they can better serve the pool players by offering food and beverages. This date change will make the transition as stress free as possible for both the players and Dr Cue s. We all look forward to the new kitchen and the McDermott Tour Stop in January 2004. The November 1st & 2nd stop will be held at Let s Play Billiards Forest Grove, OR (See ad page 3 & 34)

The Hancock Family: Molly, Venetia and Leo

For many years Leo Hancock has been providing the Puget Sound area and beyond with service to it s area pool tables, working mainly with the commercial and coin-op industries. Over time more and more folks began to find him and seek his service out for their own home tables. As they say, one thing led to another and he was handling more than a few balls, chalk and cues for his commercial clients. The opportunity presented itself for the family owned and run company to move to a full retail location without breaking the bank. (Leo Hancock continued on page 17)

This month s Artistic Shot is from the Trick and/or Fancy Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (D.O.D.) of 7. Object ball l e t t e r s coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up an F ball is on the foot spot and the C ball is frozen to the F ball and on the tangent line to pocket C with allowance for throw effect on F ball (on right), F ball (on left) is frozen to C ball and F ball (on right). Place E ball one-half ball s width to the right of center of pocket E, with the back edge of ball flush with the slate cut. The cue ball is in hand anywhere behind the X line. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to C ball, carom to F ball (on left), then travel to E ball. Make all four object balls as pocket letter designated. A scratch is allowed. Here are some helpful hints to aid you in making this shot. First and foremost, you must make sure that the foot spot on the table is in the proper place. Many people don t spot the table properly. Your chances of making this shot are tremendously lowered if the foot spot is even off 1/8 of a balls width. I place the cue ball farther up the table than shown in the diagram, about another 1 ½ balls. The key to this shot is hitting the C ball so that the cue ball caroms over to the F ball (on the left), for the proper hit to make it in the F pocket. I also use a little draw on this shot. The cue ball caroms off F ball and travels to pocket E ball. This shot should be hit with a moderate stroke. Good luck with this one.

Sarge the idea. He thought, well school is out why not put together a three day class where juniors 18 and under could receive all of the basics of the game and more so they could start playing the game of pool correctly while they are at a young age. Sarge went to work building a package that included a six page handout of all of the basics including a page on tips of the game, a sighting and aiming handout, a speed drill to show the different speeds of shots, a copy of the world standardized rules for 8-ball and 9ball, drills for straightness of stroke, caroms, and also stop, follow, draw and cut shots. To complement this package he also inserted a handout of billiards etiquette. The classed were held at four locations: Java Billiards in Auburn, WA, Dr. Cue s Billiards in Shoreline, WA, Harvey s Billiards in Renton, WA and Sunset Family Billiards in Renton, WA. The Juniors that signed up ranged from 9 to 18 years old. He was extremely surprised at how focused the students were. Believe it or not they actually took notes. Sarge said he couldn t have been more pleased with their progress in the class, and there were a few of them that were naturals. Although two of the classes only had two students each, He still

taught the class. Those youngsters got some great one on one instruction. Sarge looks forward to doing this again because it gave him great satisfaction to see them want to learn and show such progress in just three days. On the last day of class, the students and their parents were treated to a Trick Shot Exhibition by Sarge. After the Exhibition Sarge passed out Certificates of Completion to each student and also gave each student a Junior Gripper that was donated by Bill Bauer of Bauer Enterprises in Spokane, WA. Sarge has been teaching Pocket Billiards since 1972 and he has been a certified Billiard Congress of America (BCA) instructor since 1999. Being an active BCA instructor is great, but he really credits his teaching ability to his Air Force career. While he was in the Air Force he was promoted to a staff position for a little over 5 years in the instructor and training division. The Air Force sent him to five different schools to teach him how to instruct properly. I m sure some teachers may be shocked when they ask these juniors, So, what did you do this summer? We at The Break hope that Sarge will make this a yearly event.

Close To Your Work By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy Many players have a hard time with shots where the cue ball is quite close to the object ball. Aiming is one problem, but avoiding a foul is also hard to do when the balls are separated by less than an inch. Let s see how well you can do to start with on short stroke shots, and then we ll make you twice as good. Put the object ball near the head spot (the middle of the headstring or line ) and just over the line as shown in Shot A. Put the cue ball five inches away so they are pointed straight up the table. The goal is to make the object ball hit the far cushion without the cue ball going over the line and shooting more or less straight up the table. From five inches back this should be no problem at all just hit the cue ball firmly and a little below center. Of course you can t use a full follow-through, or you ll hit the cue ball a second time and send it down the table. For extra credit, can also you make the object ball hit the far rail and then come back to the head rail without double-hitting the cue ball? Bob Jewett Once you re confident shooting with a five-inch separation, put the balls only one ball apart. Can you get to the far cushion without a foul? Gradually work the cue ball closer to the object ball until a foul is guaranteed. If your best distance is already under half an inch, I m guessing you ve practiced this shot a lot. Here are two ways to improve your distance. The first is a sort of trick that doesn t work in all situations, but does work here. Use a firm, short closed bridge, have the cue stick riding right down on the cushion, and move your grip hand forward so your index finger will run into the rail just before the tip reaches the cue ball. The idea is to run your stick forward, lightly smash your hand into the table, have the tip hit the ball, and then the stick will quickly recoil due to the springiness of your hand. This sounds horrible, but it s actually not too painful. Start slowly. Adjusting the

position of your grip hand is critical it will not be in your normal grip position. Again, start from a ways back and work up to a small separation. You should be able to consistently play the shot with less than a half-inch separation. The second method will work in most situations. Simply move your grip hand so far forward that your forearm is parallel to the floor at the moment of tip-ball contact. For most players, this will be a grip position forward of the wrap on the butt of the cue. The idea is to be out of stroke just as the tip hits the ball let your forearm close completely so that your grip hand hits your chest. In a standard stance, your grip-hand forearm is perpendicular to the floor (straight up and down) at the moment of tip-to-ball contact, so this grip will feel very, very unusual. If you perfect this technique, you should be able to easily drive the object ball two table lengths with just a chalk-width between the object ball and cue ball. Also, in the position in Shot B, you should be able to draw the cue ball back to the side cushion with no problem, even with just half a ball space between the balls. These close-ball techniques have to be practiced to work well. They both depend on a very precise set-up before the shot so that the mechanics will start slowing the stick at just the right time. In a future column, I ll discuss two other techniques to avoid close-ball fouls. Visit the SFBA website at www.sfbilliards.com for other information and a free 20-page Basics Clinic handout.

Mosconi

(continued from page5)

That was the last match I ever played against Willie, but like everyone else who ever played him I will never forget it. I was the rack boy and referee for all the rest of that and every tour. I will never forget the voices from the crowd. When is Mosconi going to shoot again, the old guy is just lucky, every shot is straight in. Willie always made everything look so simple, but simple it was not. After each match it was back to the hotel to change. His dress shirt and jacket were soaked and the sleeves covered with chalk and dirt from the tables. For one hour he was a part of the table like a fifth leg or a seventh rail. Willie had just recovered from a stroke and the black hair turned to silver. The doctor said he would never play again, but Willie dragged himself to the table and Flora would spot up the balls on the table that Brunswick had given him. He practiced 16 hours every day, cue ball and object ball on the foot rail, make that ball in the corner 100 times without missing. Object ball two inches from the rail 100 times without missing, miss and he was back to the foot rail. If he continued to pocket the ball it was moved another two inches with the cue ball on the foot rail until the object ball was on the spot. Make it 100 times without missing. When a shot like that would come up he would always come over to me, I can make it 100 times without

missing. I did it in practice. It took a long time to come back but he was better than before the stroke, 150 and out was the general game. After the first year booking was easy. All the rooms increased play and every one wanted him to play. The TV channels were all there. I was in

Willie was playing 300 days a year. Willie finally told me to tell my Dad that it would be nice if we could give him a day off to rest. Willie was always a strong supporter of Billiards and was outspoken that Brunswick did so little to promote the game, and were not keeping the

The last meal I enjoyed with Willie. When we traveled he bought us at least 5 meals a day. I would usually gain 20 pounds each tour. The wives signed the photo.

Klamath Falls and saw the movie The Hustler and when I got to the room the phone rang, Hi Pat it s Willie. Willie I just saw you, I said. How did you like the movie? It s going to change the game of Billiards. I ll be in Oregon next month if you can get bookings. Could we get bookings! Tables began to sell again: 10 table room in Beaverton, 16 table room in Eugene, 16 in Aberdeen, Washington. Dad and I set up over 1,000 Gold Crowns and Anniversary tables in 5 years. My Uncle Tony put in Wayne s in downtown Portland, every new room got an exhibition. I booked and traveled with Willie 30 days a year. The crowds were enormous and

quality of the equipment on its high level. The plastic butt on the cue that bore his name really bothered him. Since he was now such a celebrity, reporters all wanted an interview and he told them all what he thought. An in house newspaper, in one of the large hotels in Miami Beach printed a three page story and quoted every word. The new president of the Brunswick Corporation was staying in the same hotel and as soon as he read the paper he was on the phone to Chuck Costel the Star Performer Manager. Who is this Willie Mosconi? He claims to work for Brunswick. Chuck answered, He s the greatest pool player in the world and he is on our staff. Fire the S.O.B. said Hennegis. Chuck called me almost in tears to tell me about it and let us know that Jimmy Caras would be taking his place. Willie s fortunes changed for the worst after this and he went from company to company. I bumped into him in Miami Lakes at the Ebonite Company meeting for factory reps. We spent a couple of hours going over old times. I would see him at the BCA shows but he had come down with Alzheimer s. It was not too noticeable at first but that great memory of his began to dim. Now and then I could find a way to get into the Old Willie hiding in the body that was still shooting balls. In Nashville, Jimmy Caras who always introduced me as his best friend in the whole world, invited me to have

October 2003 lunch with his new wife Phyllis, Flora and Willie Mosconi. Go and tell Willie be sure he doesn t wander off and we ll meet you there. Willie was playing for World of Leisure and I walked over. He was signing autographs and I handed him a picture. He asked my name and wrote it. There was no light in his eyes. I m from Portland, Oregon. I did shows for a guy in Portland and his son. When I told him I was the son the light went on. I told him Jimmy was taking me to lunch. I wouldn t have lunch with Caras! Don t you know that we are competitors? In the next breath, Hi, Jimmy ready for lunch? as Jimmy, Flora and Phyllis walked up. Willie and Jimmy had a big hug and we were off to lunch. As we walked to lunch we passed the old Spaghetti Factory I said, Willie the idea for these places came from George Amato. Don t you ever book me at Amato Lanes, he made me play at 1:00 AM! How is your Uncle Tony Wayne? Is Bob Archer still playing? How are Sam and Shirley Chapman? He went over the list of all the places he had played in Oregon and Southern Washington. Willie had a remarkable memory in the days when he was on the top of his game. He knew how many balls each of his opponents could run and what leaves could give them trouble, but towards the end he didn t remember that Jimmy Caras was his best friend and protector. Alzeheimer s is cruel in that way. It causes its victims to live in constant fear. Willie took a wrong turn in Nashville and he was lost for three hours. Jimmy had to go everywhere with him but was glad to do it. Willie was always the greatest showman and represented the game to the public in a classy and dignified way. Jimmy always respected his talent and protected him. Alzheimer s put out the fire in the old steam engine that could fire so many balls in the pocket, but Willie was a gentleman to the last. The world will miss him and Jimmy. There will never be another. My gold wristwatch with the amber crystal and my signed copy of Winning Billiards are gone but the memories of Willie Mosconi at the table will always be with me. The 18 ball run stands as the high run against any of his matches here in Portland. OTB

Tournament Directors Should Take A Harder Stance By: Justin & Patti Lilje

Pool Players: As fellow lovers of the game we spend so many of our precious leisure hours playing, it is sad to see a common problem happening allto-often at weekly tournaments. Thanks to our monthly publications, we are graced with many options for weekly competition, with different games, starting times, and places to provide tournaments for almost every level of player. Clearly marked under weekly tournament listings are starting times, entry fees, formats, and added money whether it is per player or per tournament. Originally, weekly pool tournaments were held by the bar/tavern/billiard hall owner to provide business on sometimes otherwise slow nights. With the huge increase in the number of competitive pool players, many weekly tournaments often fill to a 32 player maximum. At some popular tournaments, seating can be hard to find unless you arrive early. Many more people want to compete, maybe to win some money, play against tougher players, or just enjoy a night out playing pool. The players may range from relatively new players to the game, to seasoned road players and all levels in between. As to the aforementioned common problem: players arriving late. Many times, in fact three times at a recent tournament, players will call in and arrive anywhere from ½ hour to 45 minutes after the tournament has started. On one instance, a player didn t call-in until over half an hour after the published start time, yet was still allowed to enter the tournament! So, what does that say to the person who arrives half an hour or even fifteen minutes before tournament start time? You are not as important as these other players, right? They don t have

to abide by normal rules. The tournament bracket and all other people can just wait for them. Your five bucks entry fee is not as important as theirs. And why would the tournament director even allow these players to do this? Are they such valuable customers, that it is acceptable behavior? Mind you, this is not an isolated occurrence. This happens at many tournaments. There was no car accident or family emergency (who would play pool anyway?). Calling in early and showing up on time is acceptable, but to continually show up late and/or call in late, shows a lack of respect for the tournament director, the other players, and host location. If these players cannot make it on time, they should not sign up or call in. And why can t the TD say no?? Why let them get away with such repetitive behavior? It is time that TD s take a harder stance on this issue and inform players that they must be at the tournament by start time, or they will not be able to play. This does not seem like an unreasonable request, considering 90%+ of the competitors have no problem doing it. What can you do if you don t like it? The simplest thing of all: don t go to tournaments or support businesses that allow players to show up whenever they feel like to play in pool tournaments. The ultimate responsibility lies with the business and the tournament director. Making your feelings known to the TD may be helpful also. Remember, added money in weekly tournaments comes from the the money you spend while you are at the tournament. Without the players, the ones on time, there is no added money. Think about it. OTB

Getting Ready for Pool Leagues Last Month we talked about shuffleboard. This month we have been busy getting ready for Fall Leagues. Five tables at the West Union Sports Pub off 185th, four at Greek Village, two at Porky s on Lombard and we are waiting for the Simonis Cloth for Touche. For the first time in 5 years, since I got hit by a car (I was on foot) my left shoulder is pretty important Pat Sheehan to a lefty such as myself. I signed up for APA league which I really enjoy at the River City Bar and Grill. It s on St Helen s road a mile south of the St John s Bridge and on my way home to Scappoose. Willie and Cherri Smith, the owners, are great people and the food is out of the world. I stop there at least once a week for take out. I got real lucky and won all three of the games in my first match, but tonight things may be different. We play on the 9 footers at Touche. Win or lose, I haven t had so much fun since the accident. We are working away on the tables for a new billiard room called Spare Parts. Phil Ragaway has been planning on this room for three years and has done a lot of research. Of course I have to compliment him on his choice of table manufacturers. We are making a total of 15 new tables and restoring a 5 x 10 Snooker. The tables will be on two floors. Nine quarter sawn Oak with the Snooker table on the first floor and six Cherry tables on the second floor. They will all have 3/16 inch ebony inlays similar to the old Brunswick Balke Collender Co Monroe Model. Lots more on building a quality table next issue. Well, we played at Touche last night and even though we got our ears pinned back we had a great time. Touche has a great team that is very well coached by J.D. My match was against a young woman who played a very smart game. I never had so many opposing balls shoved in front of pockets or balls buried in clusters. Amy Jermain was a most pleasant girl who grew up in many of the towns I visited in Ireland. My wife was born in Ireland and I always enjoy the Irish, even if the brogue isn t Irish. Amy s Mom was a test pilot for the U S Navy and helped the Irish switch to the cyber life by updating their systems with the help of Intel. If you don t play APA Leagues try to get on a team. You never can tell who you might play. Win or lose it s the best time you can have with a cue in your hand. OTB

WEST COAST WOMEN S BILLIARDS

The weekend of September 14th/15th proved to once again be a great success as the B.C. Women s Cue Sports Association held Tour Stop #6 in Port Alberni, B.C., on Vancouver Island. This was our second 9 ball event with the A side being a race to 9, the B side a race to 7. An enthusiastic crowd gathered for the final race to 11, and the results were: Maryann McConnell 1st 2nd Regene Springett rd 3 Ingrid Cline Andrea Wilson 4th 5/6 Janice Stromar Cindy Carr 7/8 Michelle Gamble Laurie Licuanan 9/12 Brenda Willis Chrissy Burt-McEvoy Maryann McConnell Lynn Casey Lily MacDonald We would like to thank Maryann McConnell and the staff of the Alberni Valley Billiard Club for hosting our event and providing us with excellent service. We would also like to thank Robin Woodward for being our Tournament Director and Ruthie Witt for running the payouts. Also, a special thanks to all the players for making the trip to Port Alberni to support our event! Tour Stop #7 will be held at Blondie s Billiards in Abbotsford, B.C., November 15/16th. This will be an 8-ball event. OTB Hope to see you there!

Summer time Blues turns into Winter time Fun 4th Annual Main Event Update

Gresham, Oregon started its annually highly popular and successful Main Event to kick off the 2003-2004 pool season. This year s qualifier tournaments began September 20th and will run for 20 weeks. There is plenty of time to qualify. Don t miss to many times. This year another trip will be given away for two for 3 days to Las Vegas at the finals on February 8th. Someone could win the trip even if they don t make it in the finals. You must play 12 weeks to be in the drawing. Also this year s added money is expected (cross your fingers) to top last year s $2,100 add, and the entire finalist field receives payback, plus weekly surprises???. Who else does all that ?? Players receive points based on their weekly finish place. The top 32 point earners over the 20 weeks are automatically entered into the Main Event on February 7th and 8th. The weekly format is a race to 3 on winner s side (under 32 players). With a $6 entry, the weekly tournament starts at NOON every Saturday (Late entry fee s may apply) The top point earner will receive a $100 bonus and to date, B players have won this every year. Whereas A players don t receive bonus points, B Players are eligible to earn bonus points after they have played 12 weeks and again at 16 weeks. It promises to be a lot of fun, this fall/winter. (The Main Event tournament date does not conflict with any other known tournament, as a courtesy to other establishments.) OTB Tournament Director is Andrew Monstis . See ya there!!!!

The Pool Whisperer . . . . Lance McGill: Ongoing Education Send your questions about pool and game situations to: poolclass@webtv.net McGills Billiard Academy - 1306 NW Hoyt St B1 - Portland, OR 97209 I ve gotten to see a lot of pool in my lifetime. I knew that from the start. And, now, that I m getting mail from around the country, I can see the magnanimity or the volume of pool that I ve been exposed to. During the time that I ve been a contributor here, there s been a different thing in each article that prompted the bulk of each month s responses. For the last 2 months, the most popular thing has been the exclusive information that cheese and I offer to readers of THE BREAK. So, before I tell you this month s funny stuff, let s get to the exclusives. The stuff that you can use immediately after you read it. DIAGRAM #1: the proposition here is to run-out the 2 balls as shown. No mechanical bridge and no jackup pool allowed. More than a proposition, you ll be able to use this in a game once you put in ten minutes worth of hits. You ll find that it s difficult when you begin and then it becomes realistic, and from there it moves to being easy. For most, it ll be as reliable as using the mechanical bridge AND, less trouble when romancing the stone. (working the cueball) It only has a use from one kind of cueball position and that fact alone makes it more a legitimate hit than just a curiosity. Place the cuestick 2 to 2 and a half inches behind the first object ball. Now, bridge the cuestick in your hand like so. Get the stick [between] your thumb and index finger much like you would if you were picking up a piece of lint. The point will be around the midway point between the joint and the tip. Now, learn, and do, what it takes to be comfortable and at the same time, have the tip be a half inch off of the slate. Getting comfortable with this is the only hard work on this shot because it s so uncomfortable as to be discouraging. Once you re reasonably comfortable, put your shooting hand palm down on the table about 6 inches behind the butt of the stick. From this position, you just hit the butt of the stick FIRMLY with the palm of your hand. The harder you hit the butt on your first few attempts the faster you ll get this technique. I say ten minutes just to be safe, I think you ll have it in 4 or 5 minutes. I learned this shot on a snooker table because of the extra length that is constantly in play. I don t know who I saw do it first - I just remember it being known. The player that I can credit it to around pool players is Jerry Briesathknown for his instructing and knowledge of exotic shots. The next exclusive has no diagram

and doesn t need one. Simply visualize the cueball and another ball wedged in the jaws of a corner pocket. Usually the pocket is large enough that half of each ball is below the playing surface; they re not on the table and they have yet to fall into the pocket. If you haven t seen this or had it happen to you, you re likely to view this as a trick shot. It s not. I ve seen this regularly throughout my own play. The last time I saw it was about 8 months ago when it happened to

David Fricks playing in a ring game at McGILL S. At the end of his shot, there the balls sat, perfectly as described above. The nine and the stone wedged tightly in the jaws of the corner pocket. Many reasonably skilled and knowledgeable players in the room and none of them knew a shot here. They discussed rulings and such and then, they were ready to rack, all of them except David Fricks. He had to repeat a number of times that he wanted to shoot at it. After the 3rd or 4th time they finally heard him and were curious to see how he was going to solve this seemingly unsolvable position. Sensei Fricks (as I know him) has a wry and pleasant smile on his face when he s immersed in the creative side of pool playing. It s a smile and a glow. It s like he has not only just swallowed the canary he also has a buyer for the empty cage. He had that glow and smile as he walked toward the puzzle, arriving with only the shaft in hand. He bent down at the corner and placed the shaft, tip first, up into the pocket (McGill continued on page 29)

Pool in the Park By: Dick Jones, Manager/Tournament Director

This tournament was held Saturday, September 13, 2003 and has been appropriately named Pool in the Park. Pool in the Park you ask? Yes that is correct, we moved pool tables outside into the park located next to the Eagles Club. Therefore Pool in the Park. What a great turn out we had. We started with 41 mixed doubles teams (yes that s right 41 teams) and by 1:30am Sunday morning we had our 1st 1st Jeff Boucher, Mary Price place team. At this time there are some people I really need to thank for all the help they gave me. Leland Flint, Mike Wright, Curt Watts, Pat & Lenny Gager and all the others that jumped in to give us a hand. Thank you for your help. Without these people I don t think we could have accomplished this feat. Although part of the day was a little cool we did have a great time. Final standings: 1st $425 Jeff Boucher/Mary Price, Helena This team came out of the loser s side of the bracket to win it all. 2 nd $255 Carl Higgins/Sky Tigart, Great Falls rd $160 Mike Schaff/Susie McRae, Bozeman 3 $100 Dan Hamper/Becka Stepic, Helena/Bozeman 4 th 5/6 $40 Don Cheese Akerlow/Tami Martin, Three Forks Adam Sansaver/Cathy Hellwitz, Bozeman/Helena I would like to thank all the pool players that came to play in this tournament. Although the day was a little cool, it was a fun one and the field was filled with nothing but class act pool players. Again, thank you for playing in the Pool in the Park tournament. Just so you pool players know, we will be doing the Pool in the Park sometime in July. Make sure you know where your sunscreen and lawn chairs are.

the winners final. John Horsfall was back looking for another Spokane Open title. He was our 2000 winner and our 2001 runner up. John opened with a gut wrenching win against Jeffery Leonard 9-8. He then went on to defeat Randy Camantigue 9-5, Tony Rodriguez 9-1, Wayne Boyd 9-7 and Edwin Montal 9-2 to earn the other spot in the winners final. Edwin Montal was our 2002 Spokane Open winner. At this year s event Edwin opened with a 9-4 win over Tim Tweedell. He then went on to defeat Merv White 9-5, Stace Mallott 9-2 and Sam Yukitake 9-2. After his loss to John and being moved to the b-side Edwin defeated hometown pal P J Massicott 9-3, fellow Canadian Bernie Mikkelsen 9-1 and U.S.A. s last hope Barry Emerson 9-5. So once again the title will go to a Canadian. Might as well because over the last 6 years only Rafael Martinez has been my non Canadian winner. Edwin Montal won the opening set 9-7 to force another final. John responded, shooting probably his best match of the weekend winning 9-2 to earn his 2nd Spokane Open title. I want to take the time to thank all of you for your help during this event. To my excellent wait staff, my kitchen crew and bartenders thank you for a job well done. To Andrea for her help with the tables and balls at night. And to all the players for coming to play. I also want to thank all the sponsors that help make this happen. Grahams Family Recreation, Super 8 Motel, Budweiser, Nick Varner Case and Cue, Sam Adams, Roaring Lion, Red Bull, Moonlight Entertainment and Bacardi. Without you this event does not happen. Leo Hancock Billiard Service

Page 17

(continued from front page)

We are trying to provide the best service and products without sending our customers to the poor house, is the philosophy quoted by Venetia Hancock, Leo s wife. We will always cater to the commercial industry, the league players and tournament players out there. That is the heart of our business. But, Leo found years ago that people were sometimes paying way too much to enjoy the game in their own home. Many of our new customers are people who have never really learned to play pool. They want a table to add a new dimension to their leisure activities. The current events of the last couple years, 9-11, Iraq and the economy have really turned up the desire for people to stay home with their families.

The Hancock s have designed their store mostly with families in mind. There are cues and shooting supplies, but the emphasis has been put on outfitting the home billiard room with quality accessories and supplies that won t break the bank. And, what you don t see, you can probably order. It s hard to stock every piece of furniture in every color available but we usually have the most popular things in. says Leo, and we have enough that you can get a good idea of the quality that we have to offer before you order. Of course, they still offer the same expert service for billiard tables. You will see the Leo Hancock Billiard Service logo on many commercial tables across the area. We are so proud of our work, we want you to know who did the job and many of our customers seek us out because of that. We try to be the go to guys when it comes to difficult moves and antique tables . You can find them at 325 Sunset Blvd. N, Renton, WA 98055 and coming soon at www.thepooltableguy.com.

Common Designs and Construction Methods Encountered When Shopping for a cue

BY: CRAIG W. RITTEL OWNER OF FULL SPLICE BILLIARDS 10606 BRIDGEPORT WAY S.W. LAKEWOOD, WA 98499

Hello, last month I tried to give the reader some idea how they should go about making a purchase of a pool or billiard cue. I suppose due to the response that this was helpful to some readers, and I am grateful for the comments I have received and the knowledge that my article has made a difference. This month I will try to explain to the reader what they are paying for and how construction techniques and trade names affect a cues price. All pool and billiard cues are basically constructed with the same principles in mind, which are balance, trueness or straightness when assembled, playability, and design. All cue design starts with simple construction techniques which are based on, and try to mimic the stability of a bar room or house cue. A house or bar cue, has a firm solid hit and an inherit stability when striking the cue ball. I suppose some readers at this point are thinking why should I purchase a two-piece cue, the only reason I would give is convenience during transportation, because of their length normally 58 inches they can be quit cumbersome. Today s cues are constructed using four major construction techniques, which are, Full Splice, Short Splice, Pantograph or CNC, and Decal. In the beginning, all cues were fully spliced. The easiest way to explain this technique is to look at the construction of a house cue. In most cases the upper portion of the cue will be maple and the bottom will be a different type of wood. Some where in the cues center these woods are jointed with a four prong / point splicing technique. Today in two-piece cue construction the Full Spliced technique is not normally used. The only cue maker currently using this construction that I am familiar with is Joel Hercek who

While this will increase a cues value, it has no effect on the cues playability, which is the most important factor that should be considered when considering a cue purchase. The difference these types of design and construction have on the playability of cue can be judged by testing the different forms of construction to find out which one will suit your needs. I truly hope that this information will help educate the novice players who are in the process of making their first cue purchase. My intent here is not to give a detailed explanation of cue construction, it is however my intent to give the buyer enough knowledge to see a difference in cues on a rack, and ask the necessary questions in order to find the type of cue, with the playability they desired. Again, as I said last week when you enter a billiard equipment store in search of the perfect cue for your needs, ask questions if you due not receive reasonable answers, and are not allowed to chalk the cue and test hit some balls you may want to consider making a purchase somewhere else. From passionate professional to recreational wheelchair player and everything in between, pool promotes mental and physical well-being. Mark Twain once wrote in a letter, I walk not less than ten miles around the billiard table meaning he got physical exercise while stretching his mind through pool. Some overcome tremendous physical challenges to pursue their passion, including professional billiard champion Jeanette Lee. Life has always been a pain for Jeanette. I ve always had arthritis, states the Brooklyn native also known as The Black Widow for her striking black attire and deadly effect on competitors. Despite chronic pain and several surgeries, the selfdescribed tomboy had an active childhood. Does she have a fitness regimen? Cardio kickboxing, swimming and an elliptical trainer help keep me fit, she responds. I use weight training, isometric crunches and always hold in my stomach to support my back. Does she recommend a fitness program to play pool? It gives a competitive player an edge. Exercise makes me more aware and focused, a must to play a winning game of pool. Even on days when I don t exercise, I stretch first thing in the morning, especially hamstrings Jeanette Lee as they are attached to the back, Lee concludes. She established the Jeanette Lee Foundation, which demonstrates that despite disability, any goal can be achieved. She is also the National Spokesperson for the Scoliosis Association. Pool is also a recreational vehicle for the wheelchair bound. National Wheelchair Poolplayers Association (NWPA) President Ken Force played pool in the Army until a service-related spinal cord injury put a stop to that. Several years later, he resumed playing pool, this time in a wheelchair. Initially, it was recreational, and then he won a gold medal at the National Veteran Wheelchair Games; he was hooked! The NWPA, founded to develop, regulate and encourage wheelchair billiards, works with groups such as the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) to update rules to include wheelchair competitions. The NWPA sponsors about 12 tournaments a year in which cash and prizes are awarded. Inspired to take up pool for fun and fitness? Group Instruction Seminar Presented By Classic Billiards And Cascade Pool League

It s here! What you have been asking for high-quality pool instruction seminars in the Portland area. And the best part is, for the cost of a couple of hours with one teacher, you get six hours with a team of five, yes, that s FIVE, instructors in an all day seminar. The first of a series of planned team teaching sessions is set for Sunday, November 16th, at Classics Billiards, beginning at 10:30 am. Each seminar is limited to 30 students. This is the first time a core of practiced instructors with diverse skills and specialties has come together to offer team-taught seminar. Our area has individual options available for local top-notch pool instruction, but has never presented an opportunity like this. The instructors for the November 16th seminar at Classic Billiards are Glen Atwell, Brad Gowin, Andrew Monstis, John Moribito and Pat Schumacher. Individually, each instructor has 20 to 40 years of high level playing experience and all have teaching experience, either formally or informally. The all-day seminar is geared to instruct pool players of all skill levels. The seminar will be divided into five different areas of vital pool information and skill development, each taught by a different instructor. The goal of the seminar is to share inside information, skills and techniques on fundamentals, shot execution, concentration and focus, methods and systems, shot making, game strategy, and more. Every participant will benefit from the full day experience and everyone will be benefit through diligent practicing on the information provided. Players will leave this seminar with practical tools, applicable skills and greater confidence. This undertaking is promoted and sponsored by Cascade Pool League, a BCA & VNEA players league, Classic Billiard Pool Hall on 122nd and SE Powell in Portland, Bigfoot Billiards, a table manufacturing and refurbishing business in Troutdale and Dragonfly tattoo Vancouver, Wa. Thanks to outside sponsorship, the cost of this seminar, normally almost $200, is only $60. Besides 5 hours of instruction, students will also receive free lunch and free pool time. Corr & Kelly BCA Instructor Status From: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

(Colorado Springs, CO) Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Executive Director Stephen Ducoff is pleased to announce that Karen Corr and Julie Kelly have recently completed training and testing as BCA Recognized Instructors. In order to qualify as a BCA Recognized Instructor, candidates must attend and meet the requirements of a BCA Master Academy. Ms. Corr and Ms. Kelly attended Cue-Tech Pool School, a BCA Master Academy located in Dallas, TX. Randy Goettlicher, owner of Cue-Tech Pool School, BCA Master Instructor and former BCA Board of Director member commented, Just like all other major sports, the pool community is now understanding and recognizing the teachers of the game . For years, golf and tennis playing professionals have given great accolades to their instructors. The BCA Instructors Program (founded in 1992) has now joined those ranks. Currently, there are 241 participants in the BCA Instructor Program. The program s mission is to raise the quality of billiard instruction, make it available to everyone who desires to increase their abilities and encourage a lifetime enjoyment in cue sports. Candidates enter the program at the Recognized Instructor level and advance through the program by meeting various requirements in continuing education, written tests, practical tests, student feedback forms and Master Instructor evaluations. In general, an instructor must serve at least two years at one level in order to advance to the next, although a fast-track program is available to instructors who show that they are especially effective in teaching methodologies. Bob Radford, Chairman of the BCA Instructor Committee and owner of Cue U in Rockford, IL, invites all those interested in teaching to consider the BCA s program. By becoming BCA pool instructors, accomplished players have a unique opportunity to contribute to the dynamic growth of the billiard industry, Mr. Radford said. The BCA certified instructor has demonstrated that he or she has the tools to assist players of all skill levels to move their game to a higher level. To locate a BCA Instructor or Master Academy near you, please visit the Play section of the BCA website (www.bca-pool.com). To obtain more information on joining the BCA Instructor Program, please contact Kathy Simmons at kathy-simmons@bca-pool.com. The BCA is a national non-profit organization, dedicated to providing its members with exceptional value by promoting and growing cue sports worldwide. The BCA supports its membership with educational programs, trade expos, tournaments and other programs designed to make pool everybody s game. For more information, please visit www.bcapool.com

We re expanding our coverage and distribution this year, because our pay-per-view partners still see value in the product, the sport and the market. If we show growth from last year s performance we ll be one step closer to developing a much broader TV package, similar to NFL Sunday Ticket, MLS Shootout, NHL Center Ice, etc. This type of package would feature a series of top pro tournament events, which in turn would help increase the prize funds for each of those events. As a result, the players, event promoters, the fans and the industry as a whole will benefit. So, for only $9.95 pool and billiard fans can make a big impact on the future of pool on TV, not to mention getting a commercial-free, uncut tournament pro match in the comfort of home. Summer Titleholders September 13-14, 2003

The Summer Titleholders, started off with an unusual twist! With the 20 teams that qualified for preliminary playoffs. The W.S.P.L. saw (3) Wild Card Teams make it to the final 10 Team Titleholders. Until now, the most teams to ever make it was (2). But fate and experience would take its toll on the Wild Card Teams and only (1) Gig Harbor Wild Card would place in the top (5) teams. Paula McCord s team has now made it to the Titleholders 4 out of 5 times !! As usual, the 8AM opening for the Titleholders at Carriage Square Sports Bar, started off slow, but things started to heat up around 12-1PM. When we could all see that there was a strong possibility of two team matches 1st Place Eli s Road House going to Sudden 2nd Place Dock Street Landing (back row l to r) Captain-Brian Mygrant, Death, and that s Captain-Travis Stanhope, Designated Coach Chad Hudgel, MVP-James Schweiger, exactly what Fred Veeters, Co-Captain-Nate Stevens, Becky Co-Captain-Brian Cleveland, Kristine happened! Crouch and Kristine Angelus Angelus and Nate Stevens (front) League The Gig Harbor Operator-Gary Smith team Elite would manage to take a very experienced Curtis Chipman team to Sudden Death and Win!! On the other side of the board the North Pierce Champions Q z Homies would take their 2nd team match to Sudden Death, after winning their 1st (3) player matches. This match would become a real nail bitter, and Dusty Cline would be victorious against Keoki Ganitano in a Hill to Hill match, that would produce one of the best Good Sportsmanship matches that the W.S.P.L. HAS EVER seen. Thanks to both players for setting a G r e a t Example. But, the great story of the Titleholders w o u l d 3rd Place Time Out Tavern come from (l to r) Captain-Tim Taylor, Scorekeeper-Ralph Eli s Road Kuehnel, Ryan Elofson, Co-Captain-Mike Jeffres, H o u s e , Designated Coach-Dusty Cline where a year and a half ago Marc Petersons team, The Corner Pocket won the 1st Titleholders that they played in and 4th Place Q z Family Restaurant The Homies have then struggled since, but did finish 3rd in this year s Designated Coach-Ron Dodge, Troy Gifford, CoState Championship. Most of Marc s and Travis Captain-Roger Hanson, Captain-Urian Westlund, Jimmy Worley, (front) Teresa Dodge Stanhopes players have improved over the past year and half, and they were always pushing the 22 Rule to the edge. So, they split their team in half, and joined some of their most improved players with a struggling team in their own Division, and with the guidance of their more experienced players, and a little luck, the W.S.P.L. was able to see the results. The Final Match between Dock Street Landing and Eli s 5th Place Gig Harbor The Floatation Device Best Sprotsmanship Award Road House would (l to r) Team Elite: Shannon Keels, CaptQ z Family Restaurant come down to a Paula McCord, Mike May, Eric Hanes (not Keoki Ganitano & Dusty Cline Sudden Death match pictured) Jake Koch between James Schweiger and Fred Vetters, and even though Fred had convincingly won his 1st match against James, the Sudden Death match would turn out differently! With James Schweiger stepping up to the Ultimate Challenge!! Congratulations: Eli s Road House BIG RACK and THANKS TO ALL THE PLAYERS who participated in the Summer Titleholders. See you in January and February. OTB

from below: stroke up into the cueball. The cueball will find it s way onto the playing surface and the nine ball will fall straight down into the pocket. Work on the speed of this one because you can scratch in the diagonal side pocket or one rail in the corner. If you really want some work get it to the point that you can get to any pocket with the cueball from this shot. It s gonna come up. And you re gonna be kicking yourself instead of kicking at the nine. The next one came to me as he result of an emailer that questioned my statement that anything that happens on the table will have a use in regular play. He has insisted that the miscue has no use and I should therefore rescind or at least add an

asterisk. His words, not mine. OK, so here we go...place the 9 ball a half diamond from the corner pocket and frozen to the short rail. Now freeze the cueball on the 9 ball and at a 45 degree angle. This angle need not be exact. Go to a flat bridge on the end rail lined up for a miscue on the outside edge of the cueball. Shoot about half of your power break speed and be certain to miscue. You ll be delighted to see the 9 ball roll mysteriously and easily into the pocket. Miss it with more speed rather than less. It ll hold as much speed as you can muster. Do you want more miscue uses next month? Writing still feels risky for me and my way of getting through it is to give you laughter. So, to that end: TBS, the Superstation prides itself on having the best of both TV worlds, sports AND movies they proudly announced both in last week s promo with the following graphic- DUMB AND DUMBER/USC vs. OREGON. Real life proving once again to be funnier than anything that we could create. And more: there s lots of ways to ask someone to get in and play. The most effective ways attack the ego. The most creative way that I found always kept [most] of the room in good humor and always got a game. All you need is someone in the room

with an expensive stick. You know, like a stick worth $3000.00 or more. As soon as you see this kind of stick, ask em about it. Believe me...they re gonna tell you about it. And somewhere in the midst of their grandiosity, you ask, with an entirely unreadable face, that s not false ID is it? You, my friend, will have found yourself a game. Now, to the work for this month>> most of the diagrams I received about 1-pocket solutions fell under 2 distinct categories: KISSES and the ENDGAME. This month I ll give you the info on getting out of the kiss when banking balls to your pocket. First, the guideline, another one of those things that you can use immediately after you hear it. Look to see IF THE CUEBALL HAS A CLEAR PATH TO THE CORNER POCKET. If it does, there s no kiss! See this illustrated in DIAGRAMS #2 and #3. You might mess this up while you re learning it and learning the kind of accurate looking that it demands. I use this in EVERY rack that reaches the endgame. The rest of it is to remember this: hitting more of the object ball slows the stone and less of the object ball speeds the stone up. It s this unnatural speed that negates the natural kiss. The rest is to affect both ball paths with spin. The technique that it ll serve you best to master is known as crossing a ball. Easiest described as a bank where the cueball gets underneath of the banked ball. Ask a good 9 ball player if you can t visualize it. They use it routinely when they play safeties. Note that in DIAGRAM #4 we re using the kiss to remove a ball from, their pocket. Shooting into and, letting the kiss happen. Let the kiss happen and the cueball will be kissed back to the end rail while the object ball will have been kissed up table. The best way that I know of to learn about kisses is to learn to set bank shots up so that the kiss is on. Not as easy as you think. Learn to do this for all kinds of banks no matter how many rails you re using. This is a way that you might well end up with a solid understanding of kisses after only one days work! Now, that has to be worth

DIAGRAM #4

the work. For those of you that do this work, you ll gain a huge advantage in games that you otherwise would lose because of a bad kiss. Thank you for your participation in the email inquiries and solution requests. I m enjoying them and continue to answer as many personally as I can. Lastly: my favorite country song is 7 Spanish Angels. second to that is exactly as I offer it to you here...in life and in pool. I hope you dance. mcgill
