On Labor Day weekend McQ s Billiards held our annual Spokane Open Tournament. This year s event brought on the addition of an 8-ball tournament that was added to the 9-ball event we have done for years. Although the entries to the 9-ball field were a little light, 55 to be exact, the 8-ball field sold out with a full 32. Allowing players to shoot both events I had to keep the 8-ball field small to avoid too many conflicts with matches. Both events ran smoothly and the players were very accommodating with

NWPA TOUR STOP #5 Q STREET BILLIARDS By: Heather Doherty
The Northwest Women s Pool Association (NWPA) held its fifth tour stop September 14-15, 2002 in Springfield, Oregon to another great showing of 33 hopeful women. Hosts of NWPA tour stop #2, Sharon and Dennis Blackwell of Q Street Billiards once again afforded these players their generous hospitality, fine food, great tables and added $750 to the prize purse. Tournament Director Ted Woodward and assistant Dan Coffman once again ran a smooth event. Having preset all the tables with score devices and player cards, the ladies were able to start matches

immediately upon concluding the players meeting. Tournament play ran efficiently on Saturday leaving only the final eight players to battle it out on Sunday. Playing in only her third event of the season, but certainly no freshman to competitive play, Kim Sijer of Spanaway, WA came to the event with a newly rekindled drive to win. As if having awoken from her leave of the game newly refreshed, Kim made an unbelievable reentrance to the tour, breezing through more than half of her A side matches. She blew past Connie Carlson [7-0] and Linda Carter [7-3]. She then maintained (Q Street continued page 18)

August 23-25, 2002 The Bridger Mountain BCA Team Championship was played at the Eagles Club in Bozeman, MT for entry into the BCA Tournament in Las Vegas 2003. Ball Busters from the Hub Bar out of Belgrade, MT who finished 13th out of 21 teams in league captured first place and went undefeated throughout the tournament. We ll see everyone in Vegas. Grand Re-Opening of The Viking by: Deby Welfringer
Lacey, WA The venture has begun and was celebrated with a Grand re-Opening party. Dick Megiveron and Deby and Rob Welfringer kicked off their purchase of the The Viking on Sept. 7th. If you ve never been to the Viking now is the time. It s located in Lacey WA right on Martin Way. We have a full bar, full kitchen and two 1945 Brunswick 4-1/2 x 9 foot tables. We have a dancing and we sing Karaoke Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. So, how was the party? It was a huge success and we want to thank all of you who attended. Things started gearing up about 3:00pm. By 4:00pm the Al Hess food was being served. We had over 120lbs of BBQ Chicken and Ribs with A gratin potatoes, pasta salad, potato salad and corn on the cob. Special thanks to those who contributed: Patti Conn, Debi Nelson, Tony Lomsdale and Pat Tarver with Jay Farmer manning the BBQ. We had plenty of yummy food for all. Once our bellies were full the invitational karaoke singers began their performance. They were incredible. Special thanks to Megan Torve for putting together a group of such talented performers who included: Patti and Rich March, Jack, Barb Murphey and husband Murphey, Jackie Sawyer, Leah, Larry, Bill Valentine and Mr. Rock and Roll. We were able to get in two 9-ball pool tournaments. I think the best part was Al Hess who wore his Viking horn hat while competing in the tournament. He took this very serious. It was a classic moment.

After the food was served the invitational karaoke singers gave their performance and the good times really started to roll. The atmosphere was awesome and we all had such a great time. It was elbow-to-elbow and standing room only. At 9:00pm it was open karaoke and the place was singing in style. We had Debi Nelson and Keith Mulligan bartending and Chrissy Gray, Tracey Delaney and Lacey Miner serving the guests. I don t how they did it, but they somehow managed to work their way through the elbows. Thanks for the great service you guys. We gave away many door prizes and broke out the Viking hats. We didn t realize having different sized horns on the Viking hats would create so much horn envy between the guests and everyone was definitely horny that night. The place partied until closing and was more than we could have hoped for. We would like to thank all our patrons who endured the remodel with such patience. We are grateful to have such a group of wonderful people in our bar. Please check in frequently. We will be having many new events every week including: pool tournaments, BBQ s, NFL football specials, karaoke contests, lunch and dinner specials and other fun events. We will be having charity events starting in Oct. including: a coat drive, food drive and a toy drive. If you would like to donate we will be happy to pass it along. BREAKTHROUGH A Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem
About the Author Dean Shane Cassem
Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80 s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores by November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young Carter Keating to pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captively as Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in Willies Pool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacular nine ball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stomps off, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat. In Part Two, Wakefield and Tools Spinard challenge Gadwell and young Keating to an eight-ball match. Keating agrees, fails to make a shot the entire time, and faces the ridicule of Spinard, Wakefield, Gadwell and the other patrons in Willie s Pool Palace. Young Keating swears that he will learn to play the game, and play it well. Part III describes young Keating s rapid development as a player and, his introduction to Charley Sturgis, an old and wise mentor, who guides him to maturity, both as a pool player and as an individual. A HARD PULSATING RAIN FELL PROFUSELY from a black, moonless sky. On the radio, the weatherman blared that the roads would be iced by morning. I parked in Willie s back lot, threw up my collar and ran around to the front entrance. Thirty minutes before I had been at the Pub, the downtown pool parlor where Jack, the Hammer, Dunbaum had been playing an all day match with Peppy Rodriquez, a road hustler in from the West Coast. Rodriquez, impetuous and hot-headed and in his late twenties, had given the Hammer a good run for his money, but finally gave up after dumping a couple of large bills. Before that I d engaged in a match of my own and completed a high run of ninety-five, beating Columbus Bruce, the owner in a straight pool race to one-fifty. Never before had I run more than seventy-five. As I turned the corner and scaled the steps, I looked through the large glass windows and saw a packed house inside. The Thin Man and Cigar Cartier were playing on table three. Once inside, I stomped to the bar and cut a sharp right to the pool room side of the restaurant. Dave Wakefield shot up to me right away. Bout some nine ball, Keating, he baited. Nod. Rackem on table five, Eddy! He yelled. Eddy Cooksey glanced up then came over and racked the balls. He looked at me and gave me a thumbs up. Breakem , I said confidently, eyeing Dave Wakefield. Wakefield gestured smugly then stepped to the table and threw a full-wristed arm-extending break at the rack. A loud, reverberating crack sounded across the room as all nine balls splattered in every direction. Before they stopped, the two, three, and eight settled into the black depths of the pockets. Only six colored object balls remained. Wakefield smiled cockily, punched in the one ball, drew back on the three, then settled in and ran the rack. In the second game, on the break he rolled the nine in the left corner pocket for an immediate winner. Suddenly he led two games to none. I looked at Charley Sturgis and nodded. He knew . . . I knew I d made a foolish mistake by giving Wakefield the break. Now I d have to pay the price. (Breakthrough continued on page 19)

Q
A lady in southern Oregon writes that she had bought a pool table years ago that didn t look so great but the playing surface was in excellent shape. She said she got the table really cheap. Now she has a crack in the slate. She s wondering what if anything can be done for the table.
A
You can fix most slates. How depends on the type of crack. You will be working with either super glue or bondo and you will have to work fast. These products need to be used in a well-ventilated area as well. Also, any jagged pieces of slate can be very sharp. Take my word on it! Be careful not to cut yourself. For this, I am assuming that you have a single piece slate or unbacked three piece. 1. If the crack is not all the way through the slate, simply ooze some type of super glue (liquid, not gel) down into the crack until it is completely filled and let it set. Use a razor blade or sand paper to remove any residue. 2. If the crack has gone all the way through and you actually have more than one piece you will have to get the slate on a flat surface. I have the luxury of putting it on top of another slate. Put wax paper under the area to be glued. Set the slate pieces tight together and ooze the super glue down the crack as above. Make sure they are as tight as they can go and use a pipe clamp to hold them together if you can. Remove residue as above. 3. If the crack is angled through the slate somewhat horizontally, you want to really make sure the whole area is covered with glue. Let it seep in good and then put some kind of weight on it from above. 4. If you actually have chunks or small pieces that have come off the top of the slate you can glue these into place if they have clean edges. If they don t, or the pieces are missing it is time to get some bondo, the kind you fix car bodies with. Use the bondo according to directions and work fast. Fill in the missing areas and let dry. Sand to smooth. If you have a three-piece slate with or without wood backing you are probably going to need the help of a reliable tech in your area. The slates will have to be re-leveled and set and that is something you should have done by a professional. A wood backed slate may have other potential problems that would be difficult to go into here. You should call your tech anyway if you don t think you can handle the problem. Slate is expensive to replace but it can be fixed fairly easily if it hasn t completely shattered. Here is a trick shot that is a little tricky to set up. The first two balls to set up are balls X and B. Ball X, as diagramed, is to the right of the foot spot and slightly below it. Ball B is froze to ball X and the line of centers of the two balls follow the dotted line. Next start your semi-circle on nine balls starting with ball A. The distance between balls A and B is one ball. Make sure all balls are touching in the semi-circle of balls. Hit the cue ball with low left English using a hard stroke. Hit one third of ball A so that the cue ball caroms to ball B. Ball X will then travel along the solid black line for the corner pocket.

competitors shooting both events. That kept me and some players very busy going from one event to the other. The 8-ball tournament saw Stan Tourangeau meet up with Bernie Mikkelsen in the winners final. Stan moved through the lower half of the board with wins over Darin Walding 5-2, John Duclos 5-3, Wayne Boyd 5-2, and Jim Ward 52. In the match with Jim Ward, I did something I have never done before. We happened to be taping the match and the question of a foul came up. Jim was shooting over an object ball, and on the stroke, Stan called a foul and Jim disagreed. After some discussion with me, and receiving conflicting information I went to the video booth for review. Upon further review, it was a foul. On the backstroke of Jim s shot he rolled the 5-ball away from the cue ball, doing that he hit the cue ball where he would not have been able to. Ball in hand to Stan. Meanwhile, the top half of the board was being dominated by Bernie Mikkelsen. With a first round win over Oliver Acosta 5-4, he went on to defeat Scott Chandler 5-4, Jerry Van Scharrel 5-2 and Merv White 5-4. In The winners final Bernie won 5-2 and sent Stan to the b-side. Stan beat Mike Zimmerman 5-4 to set up a rematch with Bernie. At that point Stan was unstoppable winning both sets 5-2 and 5-0 to claim the first place prize. Moving on to the 9-ball event, I was a little disappointed by the lack of participation. Getting a full field of 96 players last year we only had 55 players this year. With the potential of over $4,000 added to the 9-ball tournament and getting 55 people to play doesn t make me very excited for next year. Some of this blame I put on myself. For the first time I imposed a late fee. My incentive was to get players to sign up early, but it backfired. I waved the late fee a week before the event but didn t get many late sign ups so it s the last time I ll try that. I also put some blame on my local players. Out of 55 players only 7 were local, that number is discouraging to me since they only need to pay an entry fee. No hotel room to pay, no Nita Saddler, Clay Skidmore - McQ s Tournament Directors gas money to pay and it s not like they didn t know it was going to happen. It s been happening for 7 years now. So I hope to see that number improve next year. One thing that was nice about the short field, I was able to give hard start times to the players. Usually I am forced to run continuous play and I can only estimate so that was nice. I was also able to cut things off early both nights and we didn t have to play really late either. But when the play was going on it was very fun to watch. There were a lot of upsets but the biggest upset didn t quite happen. Rafael Martinez shooting on the b-side due to an early upset at the hands of John Duclos, found himself down to Todd Ruhlen 8-3. Todd had a few shots to knock him out but didn t get there and lost a heart breaker. Todd shouldn t hang his head too low though he was one shot away from beating a world champion. Rafael s early loss opened the door to the rest of the field. John Duclos the former Alaska state Champion 14-1 player moved into the winners final. With hill-hill wins in his first 2 matches over Mike Massey and Damien Rebman he then went on to defeat Rafael Martinez 9-6, Loy Long 9-4 and Kris Iverson 9-6 to earn a spot in the winners final. Glenn Atwell was our other participant in the winners final. Glenn opened with a win over Dan Louie 9-3 and went on the defeat Brice Avilia 9-5, Oliver Acosta 9-6, Jim Ward 9-3 and Stan Tourangeau 9-7 before losing to John 7-9 for the hammer. Moving over to the b-side he ran into a train. The conductor s name was Rafael and he was stopping for no one. After his loss to John and then the scare by Todd, Rafael hit his groove. He went on to defeat Brice Avilia 9-0, T J Frank 9-5, Tim Tweedell 9-5, Kris Iverson 9-1, Dwayne Bjornstad 9-3 and Glen Atwell 9-3 to play in the finals with John. The first set went fast and Rafael handed John a 9-1 loss to even things up. The second set was closer by the score and once again, I had to deal with customer issues so I missed a lot of the final match that put Rafael on top 9-6. In doing so he also stopped the streak the Canadians had at 6 wins in a row. At this time I would like to thank all the sponsors that helped make this event happen. October transition month. Hunters with weapons and gear hitting the woods; other hunters, with their weapons and gear, hitting the pool halls. October is a huge month for tourneys. Coming off the hot days, through the dream days of Indian Summer and into tournament/money season is like jumping into the Gorge at runoff! Cues become compass and satellites guiding us through the rush and thrash of the season, as we each hunt the Boone & Crockett trophy among the herds of wild wins. We, too, wear camo for our hunt; sneaky petes, buck calls ( wanna play for a few bucks? ) and bear bait complete the outfit. Another striking similarity is the amount of alcohol many nonserious hunters and many poolplayers consume, prior to and during their outings. Years ago, I lived deep in the mountains of the Idaho panhandle where some out-of-staters chose to hunt . Opening day was about mid-point in their binge and the only game they got was one of their own, who fortunately lived through the experience. Happily, the partying gameroom has a lot more hunting allure for poolplayers than those pilgrimpopulated mountains held for true, native hunters and woods workers on opening day!! So, off we go in the annual pursuit of Big Games. They migrate through the seasons like caribou over Alaskan tundra; always around, just more numerous at times & in places. As in hunting the 4-leggeds, the awareness is always present that a bigger one is still out there. For each of us, the Big One has its own definition and parameter. All that really matters, in the long run, is that we know the face of our goal, even as it changes, and that we remain in the hunt as long as it gives us enough of that which we pursue. In professional football there is a catch known as the immaculate reception. In basketball we re all familiar with the 3/4 court buzzer beater. In golf there s the hole in one. Baseballs bounce off of the pole foul ball or homerun. And of course in boxing we have the lucky punch, all written about in high regard. In our game many of us are bored to hidden tears as we listen to the anger and rage of someone telling us the story of how some player got lucky on them and how they should ve won. We all know the stories and we can even lip sync the end of the sentences! Blah,blah,blah ... and then the ball ... blah,blah,blah. Stop! D ya understand? Stop it! It s like bragging that you re on the wrong end of an autopsy. There are three aspects for us to attend to when we play pool for money: listing the most powerful one first-they are luck, strategy and skill. That s right, The the most powerful of the three is luck! Neither you nor I are gonna beat luck. You are going to outshoot someone and lose. Play enough and you are going to out move someone and lose. You are going to out shoot and out move someone one night and you will lose. So what does this have to do with management? The player with the best knowledge has the best luck. Another way for you to remember it is that the harder you work the luckier you get; so we do have the opportunity to affect what kind of luck we have! The rest is information. The knowledge/information part is what Cheese insightfully advised you on last month get an instructor. Now tell me if you can imagine this happening: Well Mr. Ali, the 15 rounds are up it looks like I ve won the fight. Y know it s winner take all and I d like to go 2 or 3 more rounds and give you a chance to win your money back. NO, and it shouldn t happen. Like we played so that nothing would happen. We play to win the other player s money. Why aren t we saying, Yeah, I did beat you pretty easily, let me win some more. At that level it becomes business and business requires sound management to succeed. Oroville, WA The Fat Boy s Diner Scotch Doubles Tournament on September 7th, turned out a small, but elite group of dedicated players. In a race to 5, 8-Ball format, Tina Teesatuskie & Jim Ward went undefeated throughout the entire tournament, playing against Sabrina Storm & Scarbo Marchand, Kathi Giles & Jeff Rounds, Johnnie & Stu Landis, and Gail Stensgar & Wayne Boyd. Gail & Wayne took the hard way around, losing to Norma Cardin & Ike Williams in their first match, then going on to win against Kate (Sorry, Kate, I didn t get your last name) & Robert Colman, Kathi & Jeff, Diane Stensgar & Sonny Cardin, and then a tough one with Johnnie & Stu, to go up against the hot spot team, Tina & Jim, who staunchly held their undefeated position. The whole day was fun and exciting, with lots of friendly rivalry. Thanks to Jim and Arlene Newton for sponsoring the event, and providing such wonderful food and beverages. Horsfall Captures Canadian 9-Ball Championship With Reports by Chalk and Cue - Canada s Billiard Magazine
Saint John, New Brunswick August 30-September 1,2002 There was only one way that John Horsfall could be sure of a spot in next year s World Championship in Cardiff and that was to win the 2002 Canadian Championship. With that thought in mind, he went straight through a grueling three days of tough competition in the sixty-four player field with never a loss. The likeable lanky Horsfall captured the one major title that had eluded him throughout his career with a 15-7 John Horsfall victory over Raymond Cruz of Toronto, Ontario. Horsfall is known to readers of Chalk and Cue (Canada s Billiard Magazine) as a regular instructional columnist with co-author RobertEighteen-Bisang. The Vancouver native is a force on the international pool scene and is a player representative for Falcon Cues of Mississauga, Ontario. John had wins over Darrel Hatfield (New Brunswick) 11-6, Craig Cochrane (New Brunswick) 11-10, Benny Onyschuk (Alberta) 11-5, Paul Potier (British Columbia) 11-10, Brad Poorman (Saskatchewan) 11-4, Raymond Cruz (Ontario) 11-8 and Raymond Cruz 15-7. He struggled in his match with Cochrane and came back from being down 5-1 against Onyschuk. The also gentlemanly Raymond Cruz is a talented Philipino player who has now a spot to represent Canada at the World Championship next year. Stevens Races to Victory in Snooker
Kirk Stevens was being filmed for a documentary and couldn t have produced a more spectacular display as he raced to his fifth Canadian snooker championship. He has won the title in each of four decades with his first win in 1978. Kirk had five century runs and tied the tournament record high break with a brilliant 143. Peter Kippie equaled this feat in 1991and Jeff Kennedy came close this year with an incredible attempt. This was the first time that Stevens had defeated Cliff Thorburn in the finals of the Canadian Championship. Thorburn was the defending champion, having defeated Tom Finstad in last year s final. Cliff is a former World Snooker Champion and a Member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame as well as a featured columnist at Chalk and Cue. IOC Makes 2008 Recommendation on Billiards from: Amy Long Director of Marketing & Business Development
September 20, 2002 Colorado Springs, CO In a recent report issued by the International Olympic Committee s (IOC) Executive Board, billiards, among other sports, has been recommended to not be included in the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing 2008. Though this seems like a step backward for billiards, it actually may pave the way for eventual inclusion in the Olympic Games, according to Jorgen Sandman, President of the World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS), the cue sport organization recognized by the IOC. We have known for some time that the IOC really cannot allow the Olympic Games to grow any further. In order for billiards to be accepted for inclusion into the Olympic Program, others sports or disciplines will have to be eliminated. The IOC report is recommending a number of such changes as well, states Mr. Sandman. When considering additions to the Olympic program, it must be shown that the new sport brings additional value to the program by virtue of statistics reviewed on federation affiliation, nations competing in major events and broadcast and
press coverage of major events, according to the IOC report. In addition to billiards, the following sports were recommended to not be included in the 2008 Beijing program: air sports, boules (similar to bocce), dance sport, bowling, racquetball, water skiing, squash, underwater sports and Wushu (martial arts). The IOC Executive Board also issued a set of sport specific considerations against which all future Olympic programs will be judged including global public/ media interest, social value, youthemphasis, objective judging and participation by both men and women. To varying degrees, billiards stacks up to these considerations quite well. The challenge is for the various governing bodies to accumulate credible statistics to support the case for billiards. While Olympic participation is the ultimate goal for billiards, snooker and carom, there are many steps along the way that will increase the popularity of cue sports and drive the billiard industry. For the second time, billiards will be a part of the Asian Games (Pusan, South Korea, 2002). Representing the United States, Jeanette Lee
brought home the Gold at the 2001 World Games in Akita, Japan, and billiards will again be on the program of the 2005 World Games (Duisburg, Germany). Other important events that billiards has a chance for inclusion are the Commonwealth Games, the African Games and the Pan Am Games. The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) recently reworked its bylaws and reconfigured its board of directors to be compliant with United States Olympic Committee (USOC) requirements for an Affiliated Sport Organization. In Mr. Sandman s opinion, USOC acceptance of billiards as a sport will reflect very positive on billiards as a whole, and will give other National Olympic Committees (NOCs) a signal in the right direction. We re committed to the long-term success of seeing cue sports included in the Olympic and Pan American Games, said BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff. The IOC recommendations provide us with a clear roadmap for making a strong case for billiards and we intend to aggressively pursue our Olympic goals.

Ewa is one of the most well-known and recognizable stars in the history of pocket billiards. A past winner of multiple World Championships, including the sport s biggest prizes, the WPA World 9Ball Championship, as well as America s most prestigious prizes, the US Open 9-Ball title (twice), and the WPBA National 9-Ball Championship. Ewa is in elite company, one of only a handful of players to win all of the sport s major titles. Ewa started playing pocket billiards in her native town of Gavle, Sweden, at the age of 14. Undeterred, she battled through a nail-biter match against Katherine Czarkowski to steer herself back in line for a shot at first place and A side dominator, Kim Sijer, in the finals. Martha would have her chance to settle the score. The finals would be a battle of will, determination and a great deal of stamina, as the victor wouldn t rise to the top until 4 1/2 hours later. Kim had the comfortable position of needing to win just one race to seven. Martha went into the finals knowing she d have her work cut out for her. She needed to win two races to seven against the player who had dished out her only loss Kim Sijer of the tournament. With the finals underway, it was looking as though Kim would once again topple Martha with a lead of 5-3. Living up to her reputation as Comeback Queen however, Martha bore down and methodically worked her way to a firstset win of [7-6] over Kim. With the first set behind her, Kim could see the rematch with Martha was not going to be as simple as their previous match-up. Indeed, moving into the first game of the second set, Martha performed a nice run out from the 5 and pulled off the first winning game of the set. Martha s next item in her bag of tricks would be some shrewd safety play, 3-fouling Kim one game, to glide to a comfortable lead of [4-1]. After Katherine Czarkowski taking a break, the players came back to the table and a very determined Kim worked her way meticulously back to tie the score [4-4]. From there the players continued trading time at the table as well as games. With a lead of 6-5, Martha took advantage of Kim s miss at a 5 ball, running out for the win [7-6]. With that, Martha claimed her very first championship on the tour, raking in $572 and 200 tour points. The NWPA would like to once again thank The Register Guard newspaper of Springfield, OR for publishing a pre-event announcement and daily results from the tournament. The NWPA will hold its final points-earning event of the 2002 season October 12-13 at The Breaking Point in Lynnwood, Washington. (An 8-ball tournament is scheduled for Nov. 910 at The Halftime Bar and Grill in Vancouver, WA for NWPA players who have participated in at least three events and have not won $150. The 8-ball tournament is guaranteed at least $500 added.) The Breaking Point event will also include the NWPA year-end award ceremonies and banquet. NWPA members may attend the banquet free of charge. Nonmembers and guests are welcome to participate in the dinner and festivities for $10. Reservations are requested. The City of Riverside and Shooters should be proud to have been rated #1 in Southern California. Our Labor Day Tournament is beginning to be the tournament that you shouldn t miss. Nothing but the finest and most talented showed up, not just for the prize money but to allow the public to really see the skill and art it takes to play this game. With over 700 spectators this holiday weekend, this event truly was a feather in the cap for Riverside. The entry of 87 players including World Champion Efren Reyes and our very own World Wheelchair Champion Aaron Aragon a local of Riverside, plus many Top Pro s who made it such an exciting event. We asked Alex Laoingco, Manager of Shooters, Why would all these players come and play against so many pros? His response was, What other sport in the world gives you the chance to compete against the best? It s a thrill to watch, learn and play. Earnest Domiquez, a Southern Efren Reyes California Pro, defending his title from last year, came in 5-6. World Champion Efren Reyes won this years tournament defeating Russian new comer Staley Eugency, with the final race to 11. Kim Davenport, a pro from Manteca, finished 3rd and Jose Parica a pro from Southern California finished in 4th place. Billiards is the most underpaid and underrated sport. It is not the myth of drinking, smoking and drugs, says tournament director Myron. An hour and forty minutes later after getting over my anger, I climbed back into the match and finally forged a lead. Then, leading nine games to six, I ran three racks from the break and found myself in an oft hoped for zone. A crowd gathered around our table. Charley Sturgis had parked his wheelchair in its familiar place. I grabbed the seat next to him. Carter, he said, remember when I said one day they would start coming to you? Nod. He sighed and said, I think the time has come. My eyes snapped around and held his gaze. You re using your head, Carter. Your game s reached another level and people are watching. His eyes moved subtly up and stared across the room. Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell had hopped in the door and was leaning against the corner of the wall, watching. Charley s words were like a sudden infusion of energy into my system. On the next break, I caught all of the one ball and exploded the rack beautifully. The nine, like a shot out of a cannon, flew out of the rack, got bumped by the seven, scooted down the table, got kissed by the three, then the four, and strolled straight into the lower right corner pocket. Hell s Bells! Wakefield hissed, then rose from his chair and fished out a ten spot and put it on the rail. I picked up the greenback and stuffed it into my jeans. Time, Eddy! Wakefield screamed across the room, then looked at me and added. Enough, Carter. You re hittem too good tonight. He paused. Gettin to be a habit. Without expression, I leaned my hips against the rail and eyed Charley Sturgis. He was smiling. It was a smile that no one else would have recognized but flowed slightly out of the corner of his mouth just barely enough for me to see. Hey Thin Man, Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell roared across the room. Russell, the Thin Man Case looked up immediately. Surrounded by friends, he leaned to his right, craned his neck and searched for the voice. Seeing Gadwell, he barked back, Yeah, Stick, whaddaya need? Gadwell pointed with his chin to the table where Wakefield and I had just finished playing. Bout some nine ball? Fifty a game, he challenged. Case, his face blotched from aging, blinked his eyes and thought about the challenge. Then, as though he had figured it all out in his head in a moments time, turned and said. Hey, Carter, that stick you ve been using, how about letting me take a look at it? Sure, Mr. Case, I said youthfully, and crossed around the table and handed him the cue. His high cheekbones swelled and drew me to his eyes. He studied it, felt the shaft and ran it through his fingers and said, pretty good cue stick, huh? Yes, sir, I said, it s a Palmer. Won it in an eight ball match about six months ago. Can use it if you like, Mr. Case. He pursed his lips and stared at the cue without expression, then he shoved it right back into my hands and said suddenly, How bout you use it? Me? I said, leaning back. Yeah, he declared, then leaned over and yelled across the room, Gadwell, bout playing the kid some nine ball. I ll back him. - But Mr. Case - The kid? Gadwell replied, Keating? Yep. Gadwell lit up like a light bulb. Still fifty a game? he baited. That okay with you, kid? I shrugged. Geez, me against Jimmy the Stick Gadwell for fifty a game. We ll split the winnings fifty, fifty. You lose n I ll take the heat. Charley Sturgis nodded barely enough for me to see. I paused, let out a sigh, then glanced back to the Thin Man and said, Sure, Mr. Case. The Thin Man swung around and yelled to Eddy Cooksey. Rackem on table five, Eddy! Looks like we re gonna play some pool! Ears perked up quickly and the packed room surged toward table five. Chairs flew into position and arms reached for greenbacks wanting to wager the outcome. Others headed for the bar, and doubled up on their drinks. I took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. No one was laughing. And for a moment, my thoughts went back three years to that first night in Willie s.

Pub181 Kicks off 3rd annual 9 Ball Qualifier

The pub started the annual Saturday 9 ball qualifiers Sept 21st. Every Fall the qualifiers begin. The qualifiers cover over the 20 weeks. Players receive points each time they play. The top 32 point earners over the 20 weeks will get in to the Main Event February 15th and 16th. Last year the main event added over $1900 to the event. The top point getter received bonus money of $100. The weekly format is a race to 3 and starts at Noon Saturday s. This year is a twist in that someone will win a mystery trip (heard it is either Mexico or Las Vegas) all you have to do to be in the drawing is to play in 12 of the 20 weeks. This drawing will take place at the Finals of the Main Event. All of those who play the 12 weeks even if they don t get into the Main event can still win the trip. The B players receive bonus points if they play 10 weeks and at 15 weeks A players are not eligible for bonus points. This event gets better every year. APA Hosts Ninth Annual U.S. Amateur Championship in Baltimore Area from: Jason Bowman, Public Relations Manager
LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (Sept. 17, 2002) - Some of the top amateur poolplayers in the world will be in the Baltimore area, Nov. 1-3, when the American Poolplayers Association (APA) hosts the 2002 U.S. Amateur Championship at Champion Billiards in Laurel, Md. The 128-player tournament is the only non-handicapped national tournament sanctioned by the APA and is open to both members and non-members alike. U.S. Amateur Championship participants compete in a double elimination race-to-7 with a maximum of five games of 8-Ball and eight of 9-Ball. Once the field is narrowed to two competitors, the final match becomes a single elimination race-to-11 with up to 13 games of 9-Ball and eight of 8Ball. Players advance to the U.S. Amateur Championship by qualifying in one of 15 Preliminary Rounds at regional sites throughout the country. Preliminary rounds were conducted the weekend of Sept. 21-22. The 126 qualifiers will join last year s champion Robert Hall of Meridianville, Ala., and Runner-up James Henson of Alexandria, VA. The NWPA, under the leadership of Vic Valdez, has proposed an alliance of all the western tours. This group, the West Coast Alliance of Regional Tours (WCART) will attempt to secure sponsorship funds from larger corporations. In this respect only, the tours will combine as a group. Each of the tours will still operate individually of each other and there will be no combination of tours or stops. TAKING A CUE FROM POOL KIDS RACK-UP SUCCESS IN SCHOOL From: Amy Long , Director of Marketing & Business Development
Colorado Springs, CO School is back in session. Time to put away the toys of summer and pick up the tools of learning, such as books, pencils, paper, pool cues. Pool cues? Yes, pool cues! A unique school program in Sacramento, Calif., takes high school students from the classroom to the poolroom to learn skills that will help them at school and throughout life. The program, part of Del Campo High School s physical education curriculum, just may set the standard for schools nationwide. The course, Billiards I: A Lifetime Sport, was started by a high school physical education teacher and a billiard instructor. According to PE instructor Marcie Davis, it came about one day when she was teaching a class outside and it started to rain. One of the students suggested they shoot pool. She searched for a place to play as well as an instructor and found both at Hard Times Billiards. She teamed up with Barton Mahoney, a certified Billiard Congress of America (BCA) billiard instructor who teaches the techniques established by the nonprofit World Billiard Instructor s Association. I was looking for a place to teach pool and he was looking for a medium to teach it, Davis says. Besides going off campus to play pool and write about it, what else does the course teach these young people? Pool is a game that deals with the fundamentals of geometry and physics and requires hand-eye coordination. It also teaches socialization, and students don t have to be athletes to play. Mahoney couldn t agree more, Young people appreciate the fact that the playing field is equal with no social, physical or gender barriers. Learning the physical geometry (of the body) through the application of visual geometry (of the game) is how the intricacies of pool are discovered, he concludes. Since starting the course in 1999, more than 700 students have taken the class. Marcie thinks that what sets it apart is the fact that the class has a reading and writing component. All classes at Del Campo require notebooks, and in this class, students must do peer analysis and selfanalysis. The students also have assignments in which they read about a billiard personality and write an essay. Davis sets high standards for her students in reading, writing and behavior. If a student misbehaves they are kicked out of the class, she says. This has happened only once since the program s inception three years ago. BCA Hall of Fame member and author Robert Byrne loves to sing the praises of the positive attributes of cue sports and what young people can learn from the game. It teaches advance planning; choosing the shot that gives you the chance to make additional shots before your opponent does, not the one that gives you immediate gratification, he states. It also demonstrates the concept of risk versus reward and is an exercise in discipline, in which the player learns the value of emotional control. There has been so much interest in the school program that Davis and Mahoney are collaborating on a Physical Education curriculum guide. Bart is doing the writing and I m doing the collaborating, laughs Marcie. I m not a billiard player, so I play teacher. They plan to present it to education groups around the country. Mahoney says, The program could grow to be a solid curriculum on the state and national levels. Education is a great way to bring significance to our sport and I plan to encourage other certified billiard instructors to join me in this quest. If our sport is to flourish, we must pave the way for these students they are billiard s best ambassadors. OTB

A FEW SHORT WORDS ABOUT A FRIEND By: J M Sherman
He was the kind of man who always had a friendly smile. He was genuinely interested in how you felt and if things were okay with you. You would always feel comfortable approaching him knowing he would be happy to talk with you. He had a charm about him. He liked to spend countless hours a day, just shooting and practicing on his game by himself. If asked, he would eagerly accept a challenge of a game or two for fun. For many years he would frequent Hot Shots Billiards in Beaverton, sometimes five to seven times a week. For about a year, he even worked the counter as a salesperson bringing his knowledge of the game to many new customers. His most endearing qualities though was his spirit, always upbeat, optimistic, both gentle and enthusiastic. After learning of his demise, many customers who knew of him were badly shaken and shocked in disbelief to hear of his passing. We will always remember his smiling face and comfort of his friendship. He will be missed. Rest in Peace, Barry. Good Bye. OTB

want you to drink when you gamble with them. And it is fact that the free drinks in the pit have more alcohol in them than the drinks in the bar that are paid for. Look it up. If you get high and it improves your play you weren t playing very well to begin with. Then we have the mistake that rules the pool world s losers. It s what I call, Everybody s Got One -EGO Do you know how road players make their living? Some make a stable living off of the weak. This is sound management and I see nothing wrong with it as a conscious choice, and to succeed at it takes a fine mixture of skill and management. And there is the road player, that some of you think you are, the kind that comes to town and gets all of the money in the room. Money that the aforementioned player can t get. The roadie I m talking about makes his living off of other player s egos. And do you know who Mark and Vic are? They are local champions. And some of you say but those local champions went on the road. They are not road players. They are local champions who haven t lost their car yet. True road players make their living off of the fact that players often play to make a statement rather than to make money. When you see calm on a road player you may be able to stick with her/him. It s not likely. When you see that stroke, and you will know it when you see it, you may be able to hang with that player although it is still not likely. When you see calm and that stroke on the same body- I am being kind enough to tell you that you cannot beat that player. That is a certain way to identify and eliminate one of your losses. And all that noise you re making in response to this is the reason why we get paid. Ego will get you broke.
The biggest mistake ego makes is in raising the bet after a loss. You are putting more weight on the downswing. Large downswings have small beginnings. Gambling has turns and surges. To succeed you will have to master the rhythm of that particular encounter. That is the advanced form of money management when gambling. Most of the gamblers in pool say that they love pool and what they really love is the action. Then they wind up going to horses, cards, dice and so on. Fortunes can be made from gambling. For that to be true, fortunes have to be lost. Remember that. What makes a gambler successful is not the winning. It s what they do between winnings! I m givin you gold here and I gotta go. Again please email me for more every email gets answered. I just got back from a trip to the east coast. While I was there I realized that they were loving and using my language. From that I decided to include one or two mcgillisms in each article: when I was ready to play a young man in Easton and he said he could only play for $20.00 I said to him We can t play, your papers aren t in order . He was laughing to tears and ran around telling everyone did you hear what he told me!!? Later his friend asked if he could get a class before I left for Oregon. I asked if he had his learners permit with him. He asked sincerely what is that? I described for him a hundred dollar bill. By 8:00 p m Sunday we had our top s i x teams, but it was a 2nd Tequila Shooters - L To -R Back Row - Ron Gates- John Santie SR. v e r y - Ed Williams Front Row - Dave Hagedorn - John exciting Santie JR. - James Tsan road to get there. The W.S.P.L. Titleholders presently starts with Division Playoffs one week before the weekend event. There are 24 teams involved, including the Wild Card Draws (6 Wild Card Draws). By the time we make it to the first Saturday match there are only 12 teams left in the tournament. On Saturday, September 7th, 2002, the Summer Titleholders brought to the table 12 of the bestmatched teams that the W.S.P.L. has seen so far and there were many records and scenarios in ACTION!!! Before the weekend was over some skill levels would be increased on some teams (as the players have voted on) and one team from The Time Out Ta v e r n would play a record setting 4 Sudden 3rd The Time Out - Strokers D e a t h Paul Thompson Cpt, Earl Crosson Co-Cpt, Floyd Matches Campbell DC, Joe Williams, Don Hulford, Tommy in order Nicholson, Eric Nelson to make it to a 3rd place finish. The Time Out Stroker s Captained by Paul Thompson from the Sea/Fed/Div. in Federal Way, received a crash course on how to play under pressure by taking every team match to a 6th and final Sudden Death Match Playoff. They won every match but the last one. It was a very exciting weekend for the players of the Time Out Stroker s, as they almost pulled off the 4th Sudden Death Match to make it to the final 2 teams. Not bad for the first season team. I m sure that they will do very well in the State Tournament in February!!! But the most interesting stories of the tournament would come out of the cities of Sumner and Tacoma, where the final 2 teams

But with leadership and a new D.C. on their team, they would make it to the Summer Titleholders by drawing (1) of the (6) Wild Card Draws. Dave Hagedorn, Captain and Ron Gates CoCaptain-D.C. managed to beat the #1 team in points in the S u n r i s e Division in the first week of Playoffs, to make it back to the S u m m e r Titleholders!! League Operator Tim Park. They had successfully made it back to their second consecutive Titleholders Match! The most interesting team story though, comes out of the city of Sumner, where the Grand Central team, The Automatiks will probably never have quite the same inspiration as they did for this tournament!! WHO KNOWS WHY SOMETHINGS HAPPEN? I truly believe this is a great Theme for the W.S.P.L. s Summer Titleholders, Friendship, Love and a True Desire to win for the most profound reason (for someone else and not YOURSELF). The following story is truly dedicated to Chris Butenko, who we nearly lost during the course of this session, to a motorcycle accident. Having become a Division Rep during the course of the session; Chris was riding home late one night during league, and lost traction on gravel. At the time he seemed to damage his motorcycle more than himself. Over a period of time he would end up in the hospital. His condition would change many times, and would finally get worse before the Titleholders. So, with the help of his teammates, friends, wife and the W.S.P.L. s Survival Rule, his team, who finished first in points in their division would start it s course through the playoffs, and Inspired they were!!! With their new name (THE AUTOMATIKS) they managed to win their first match on Saturday morning by playing a Sudden Death Match against Q z Sofa Kings, who I might add would end up becoming the Best Sportsmanship Team of the tournament!! On October 15, 2002 Jeanette Lee a.k.a. The Black Widow will host a Celebrity Billiards Benefit from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to raise money and awareness for The Scoliosis Association. The event will be held at Chalkies. Chalkies is located on 82nd Street near Castleton Square Mall, ½ mile east of 82nd Street and Allisonville Road. Teams of three will consist of a celebrity and two players and will compete against each other in 8-ball. Three rounds will take place throughout the evening with the final match scheduled to begin at 9:10 p.m. Additionally there will be celebrity challenges, trick shot shows and a silent auction. Celebrities scheduled to appear include Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts), Rik Smits, Dr. Jack Miller, Dr. Cue (Billiards Trick Shot Guru), Sue Ann Gilroy (Secretary of State), Nesli O Hare (Billiards Professional) and various radio, television and print personalities. Diagnosed with scoliosis at age 13, Jeanette Lee has been an active supporter of The Scoliosis Association as their national spokesperson and board member.
