NO COMPROMISE.......POOL HALL JUNKIES It was July 24, 2001, a Tuesday. Jim Chapman (President of Westar International) and I (Herb Wilmot, Sales Manager for Westar International) had just escaped the modest 108 degree heat of Las Vegas and were driving towards Los Angeles for a long-awaited and muchanticipated meeting with the key principals of the next big pool movie that will be premiering soon Pool Hall Junkies. Mars Callahan (Star, director, writer) would be there; Karen Beninati (Producer) would be there along with Chris Corso (Writer), Robert Le Blanc (Technical Pool Advisor) and Lissa Pallo (Actress). We were to meet at a hip restaurant/poolroom in West Hollywood where the making of the movie actually started, owned by Robert Tobin, a lifelong friend of Mars. The sun was beginning to set, the

upcoming meeting was very important, and we knew we couldn t be late. Jim always drove less than 90 mph, so I felt comfortable. While driving through the desert and the mountains my thoughts turned to the effects and possible consequences

upon players current, past and future promoters, industry people both in the U.S. and around the world and potential sponsorship for current and future pro tours, etc. Many people s futures could be dramatically impacted by the release of this movie.

Jim and I had been on the set of Pool Hall Junkies in the fall of 2000 in Salt Lake City. I took photos and got to know people and Jim (a paid sponsor of the movie who also played the tournament director in the film) and Tom Shaw (writer for Pool & Billiard Magazine) collaborated on a major article about the movie, which appeared in Pool & Billiard Magazine in the January 2001 issue, and in most regional pool newspapers. But much had happened since then. How was the movie coming along? What do the insiders think? What are the responses of anyone who has seen the movie? That last question was in fact answered a day or two earlier in a phone conversation between Jim and Mars. I remembered it well as we rose into the mountains. Callahan: Okay, well, we had a screening of the film Pool Hall Junkies on the Sony lot and the National (Pool Hall Junkies continued on page 13)

her $10 winnings with Bernie Foster, since they tied. (Linda defeated Bernie during their match.) On Saturday, twelve women came prepared for 9ball combat, and owners Paul and Trudy Schorzman added $500. They also provided a free drink and doughnuts every morning, as well as a 20% discount throughout the weekend. The staff, Tony and Laura Lee, provided great service to the players and sweaters. A vote was taken and a round robin format was decided upon. It was agreed to play sets of 9 games, with 6 matches being played on Saturday, and 5 on Sunday. Things didn t go as planned for Tournament Director Dan Coffman, as player Margie Ito dropped out after Saturday s competition, which is a definite no-no. Players who had beaten her had to come in Sunday with their wins erased, and players who had been beaten by her got a new lease on life. That also meant that now some players had to play 5 matches, while others only had to play 4. Dan was also trying to juggle matches for the round robin format, on a new computer program, using a laptop and a portable printer. Even so, things ran smoothly. The 6 matches played on Saturday were grueling. This is the first round robin in recent history where the top players on Saturday stayed in the same positions after the final round was over. Points were even more critical, as the final ACW standings taken after this tournament determined who would get to qualify for the LA Regional Tour Championships, October 25-28 th . (See ACW News for more information). After the first day of competition, Patty had a solid lead with 40 games, Mary Hopkin was in 2nd with 34, Kim Gates was in 3rd with 29, and Linda Carter and Clara Silvas was tied for 4th, while Jo Woodward came in 6th with 26 games. On Sunday, there were no surprises, except for Linda Carter who came on strong in her last 2 matches, 8-1, to regain 4th place. Patty s matches on Saturday were all wins against Kim Gates 5-4, Jo Woodward 8-1, Julie Valdez 8-1, Linda Carter 6-3, Sara Schwefel 8-1, and Bernie Foster 5-4. On Sunday, she had a resounding loss to Mary Hopkin, 2-7. but otherwise enjoyed a large

enough margin to maintain the lead, with scores of 4-5 to Clara Silvas, 4-5 with Tamre Geene -Rogers, and 6-3 with Kim Sijer. Mary Hopkin was actually more consistent, losing only 2 matches throughout the tournament, (and those 2 by only 1 game), but Patty had the larger scores and won overall by 2 games. Her 7-2 score against Margie Ito was wiped out, so that may have been the deciding factor. Mary went through Saturday with wins over Tamre 5-4, (Margie 7-2), Kim Sijer 7-2, Sara 5-4, Bernie 8-1, and Linda Carter handing her her only loss the first day, 4-5. On Sunday, she came back with solid play to capture wins from Kim Gates 6-3, Jo 5-4, Patty 7-2, Julie 5-4 and her only loss on Sunday came at the hands of Clara Silvas. The actual battles were for 2nd and 3rd place with Mary, Kim and Linda in contention, and for 6th place. Tamre actually tied Jo with 45 games, but since Jo won during their match with each other, 6-3, Jo got the dough! This win leaped Patty into the top 8 for the Regional Tour Championships, and solidified Tamre s spot. After all the games were tallied, there were only 5 g a m e s dividing the top 4 finishers after 90-99 g a m e s played! This speaks of the depth of the ACW; all top 7 finishers for the money have played in WPBA pro events. The next ACW event will be at the Lucky Star Pub in Kent, WA on October 13-14 with a mini-tournament on the 12th. It will be a Scotch doubles 9-ball bar table tournament with $1,000 added based on 32 players. All women players must be ACW members, but you can become a member by paying a $15-$30 membership fee. Helena BCA Big Sky Billiards League

BILLINGS BCA SUMMER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS Sponsor: J D s

The end of summer is upon us and we are gearing up for the next session of BCA Pool Leagues. We would like to take a minute to recap all our summer events. The Mixed Scotch Doubles was held on June 16, 2001 and was a Round Robin, with a number of our local players participating. The Mixed Scotch Doubles was the first of the tournaments held here in Helena during the summer. The tournament was a lot of fun and we had some pretty tough teams to compete against. The winners of the tournament were Phil Boucher and Cathy Hellwitz with Dan Hamper and Corrina Fredrick taking second and Bob Bateen and Mary Price finishing third. The Singles tournament was held on July 14, 2001, again at the Edge Casino and Lounge here in Helena. Once again, we had some of the best shots in Helena competing for the first place position. After all was said and done though, the Singles competition was won by Helena s own Jeff Boucher. The Blind Draw Doubles tournament was held on August 25, 2001 at the Edge Casino and Lounge, again. The players showed up ready to shoot and have a good time. The names were drawn, teams were formed, and without hesitation, the competition began. There was a lot of fun and good pool playing by all but as we all know, only one team can be number one. This years winners were Mary Price and Cathy Hellwitz, who went undefeated for the entire tournament. Second place honors went to Larry Eller and Colter Landt, while third place was taken by Dan Hamper and Ron Barker. Last, but by no way least, were our Spring League Playoffs on September 8th & 9th. Our final tournament was held at the Valley Hub this session. The teams congregated at 8:00 am on Saturday and after a brief captain s meeting and quick run over the rules, the competition began. The players played until there were only four teams left in the running at midnight Saturday night. On Sunday morning, the four teams remaining were Sharps Shooters from Eagles 16, and East Helena Eagles 4040, both these teams still hanging in the loser s bracket for their chance to get to the winner s bracket team, and Psych Outs and Bullwhackers competing for the top spot in the winner s bracket. Eagles 4040 defeated the Sharps Shooters eliminating the Sharps Shooters from the long and grueling competition. Bullwhackers defeated the Psych Outs, sending them to meet Eagles 4040 in the loser s bracket. The Psych Outs defeated the Eagles 4040, taking them back to meet Bullwhackers for the semi finals. In the first match between Bullwhackers and Psych Outs, the match ended in a tie and went to additional rounds to determine the victor. Both teams tied in the first round of four games, necessitating an additional round of play. In the second round of play, Psych Outs dominated Bullwhackers for the win giving both teams one loss. In the final match, both teams fought for the first place prize, but in the end, the match came down to the last game with Bullwhackers up by 7 points. Both teams played hard in an attempt to defeat the other, and when all the balls had dropped, the Psych Outs defeated Bullwhackers for the trip to Las Vegas and $1500 in prize money. Congratulations, Psych Outs. All in all, we had a really great summer session and we look forward to seeing all of you in the fall.

Most everyone in the professional world of sports has a trainer. That doesn t mean that the average barroom pool player needs to go on a diet or eat all the salads or the right type of nutrition, although that may be true, that s not what I m talking about. You don t have to go out and run a couple of miles everyday because you ll get your exercise going around the table. A trainer is someone who will improve a professional or semipro athlete s game. A pool instructor is someone who can improve your game. In the game of billiards or pool, whether it is played in a bar, on a circuit, in tournaments, leagues or around the world, most of the players that I know have never taken a lesson. Myself, I ve only taken one and I regret that because I learned so much Does your game from that lesson. I regret not taking it earlier have you down ? in my game. These instructors have taken many hours of training to pick out various people s, I don t really want to say flaws , but actually it is. Whether you are stroking, how you re hitting the ball; how you re standing; how you re positioned; how you re holding the stick; whether you follow through; whether you stand up; whether you poke, not stroke. There are so many variations on what you can do wrong and I ve done most of them if not all. In my travels around the Northwest as I deliver, I ve been asked several times, Where can I go to find a good instructor, who can teach me how to make my game improve? How can I learn to do trick shots? How can I learn to break? I want to know what I m doing wrong. That s encouraging. There are some people out there that realize that no matter how often they practice, if you don t practice correctly, you re not going to improve. Or if you practice the same flaws in your game, over and over again, you re not going to improve either. Your game may be erratic, it may be spontaneous, and that s the reason you need to get back to basics. You need to learn what you re doing wrong in order to move on and improve your game consistency. I would guess probably 90% of the average players has learned as much about shooting the cue ball, applying the english, the diamond system and just how in general to shoot the ball, but he or she is still inconsistent with their game. Finding the flows in your game from a trained professional is in my opinion the best way to go because they will have you do different drills, different exercises that you can do in order to improve your game. If you don t know of an instructor ask your friends, ask your league operators, go into a pool hall and ask whoever is working there if somebody can teach you how to improve your game to become more consistent. Then let me know. You can email me (it s on page 2) or you can write to me. I d like to know what you think after you ve taken some lessons. Some lessons can be a little bit expensive but find out what you are going to get for the lesson. Maybe you need more than one instructor to teach you different things or you need to move to another instructor so you can learn different techniques. Everybody is different so if you want to improve your game - don t go out there and buy that $1,000 stick. Invest in yourself and find an instructor that can teach you how to improve your game. Then you can invest in that cue.

2001 Masters Champ Francisco Bustamante from: Matchroom Sport Francisco Bustamante ( Phi ) 7 - 6 Earl Strickland (USA ) Francisco Bustamante today won the prestigious Ladbrokescasino.com World Pool Masters for the second time as he overcame Earl Strickland in a tense, exciting encounter that contained the whole gamut of stunning shots and shocking mistakes. With the 350 seat arena packed and hundreds more watching on from the balconies, the atmosphere was expectant as both players made their way into the arena through a cloud of dry ice. With the format a race to seven racks with alternate breaks, the all-important lag was won by Strickland and he crashed the cue ball into the pack to get proceedings underway. Rack 1 - Earl got a ball down but had no shot on the 1-ball. A weak safety let Bustamante in and he dished up to take the opener. Rack 2 - Busta made a ball on the break and then laid a safety on the 1ball. Earl kicked out, missed the pot but left the 1-ball safe. Francisco then left Earl a chance and he executed a tricky clearance to go 1 - 1. Rack 3 - Strickland s break came up dry and Busta speared in a 2 - 9 combination to go 2 -1 up. Rack 4 - the onus changed hands with

mistakes, but Earl eventually cleared to take the match to 2 - 2. Rack 5 - A succession of quality snookers and escapes saw both players in trouble but a four ball clearance put Bustamante back in the driving seat at 3 - 2 up. Rack 6 - Francisco broke and scratched. With ball in hand, Earl cleared to go 3 - 3. With six racks gone, each one had gone against the break. Rack 7 - Another dry break from Earl. A terrific shot on the 5-ball gave Busta a great chance but he ran out of position on the 8-ball, leaving a very fine cut which he missed. Earl cleared the 8 and 9 to take the lead for the first time at 4 -3. Rack 8 - A quick rack saw Busta give the cue ball back to Earl with an error.

Don t Think of a White Monkey By: Paul Marquez

Don t think of a white monkey is a term used in the Dojo when there are negative thoughts or negative communications during training. Now when I say negative, I don t mean bad or angry and I wouldn t even consider telling you what s right or wrong. What negative means in this perspective is when someone is putting forth energy by focusing on something they don t want to happen. How many times have you or someone else remembered only the things that went wrong during a pool match? It makes me wonder how their energy was flowing during that match. We, being a tremendously powerful energy source with amazing mental capabilities, tend to create and destroy more than we should. We must be careful how we communicate with ourselves. If we put all the energy we have focusing on what we don t want, then that s probably exactly what we will get what we don t want. Likewise, if we put our energy towards something we do want, then that is what we will probably get what we do want. Don t think of a white monkey reminds us on how we should communicate with ourselves, our children, and our partners. If you look back, what was the first thing you thought of when you read the title to this article? Probably, a white monkey. Go figure. If we practice positive thinking, and that means what we want to happen, we should have more successes in life and, of course, more fun playing pool. Lets remember that during tournament play, wins and losses do not demonstrate our own level of play. Setting goals to have fun and play with good focus and sportsmanship, improvement will be the result!

Earl missed and Francisco cleared to go 4 - 4 Rack 9 - A great rack filled with great snookers, superb escapes and heartbreaking errors. Bustamante wins this one to regain the lead at 5 - 4. Rack 10 - A great break and run sees Bustamante to the hill at 6 - 4. Rack 11 - Earl breaks and is forced to push out. Busta takes the 1-ball but misses a relatively easy 2-ball into the side pocket. Earl makes no mistake with the clearance. 6 - 5 Busta. Rack 12 - A rack that hinged on a succession of misses on the green 6. Busta clears to three balls then misses an easy six leaving Earl a fine cut into the top left bag. He misses and leaves the same shot for Busta. Incredibly, he fails and leaves the six hanging for Earl which he gratefully accepts and goes on to clear the 7 and 9. Down to the deciding rack. Rack 13 - When it comes to the crunch, Strickland s break comes up dry. A safety exchange ensues before a great shot by Francisco puts him in the drivers seat. With a difficult clearance ahead, he holds his nerve to take the title and a check for £10,000. Joked Bustamante, Me and Earl played terrible; we missed a lot of balls but really he was a bit unlucky. He never made anything on the break while I did and I think that s what counted in the end. The Filipino people in the audience were amazing, there were so many of them it was like playing in Manila. I m so pleased to win this championship again; I m playing in the US Open next week so it will be great to arrive there with this title in the bag. Strickland was bitterly disappointed but was able to joke after the match. He wins £5000.

OPAL-APA Speaks (an e-mail from Boomer)

When we decided to expand our publication to include the Northwest and other western states, our only goal was to promote pool. On The Break is dedicated to the advancement of the sport of pool and to promoting enthusiasm and encouragement among the players at all levels, regardless of their league affiliation, in addition to recognizing those businesses who support them all. It is offensive to me, when news from league operators to recognize their players accomplishments, is not forthcoming. I want my readers to know that I make every attempt to include all leagues, and thus, all players. In striving to do so, the following is a response from the OPAL-APA league operator. I am printing this to acknowledge those players and to let them see why they were not included in my publication along with all the other APA teams whose pictures and accomplishments were recently published. You can also find photos of your teams on the web at www.onthebreaknews.com Subj: Quit bugging us Date: 9/7/2001 1:03:29 PM Mountain Daylight Time From: APABoomer To: Cheeses4u I don t know what I have to do to get through your head that we will not be supporting your publication! Going to our players and over our head to national headquarters has done nothing but piss me off! We made a pledge to On the Wire and we intend to keep that pledge to give them exclusive rights to our articles and photos. We, unlike you appear to be, hold a very high standard for our business and refuse to deal with businesses or people who use, what we feel are unethical practices, to gain an advantage over others. Your business tactics and apparent drive to put On the Wire out of business, to us, is offensive and we will not put our good name on the line by associating APA or our business with you. Jim Trenary has tried the same tactics in promoting TAP. He was somewhat successful in other areas that did not have a strong APA force, but has been unsuccessful in our area, because we conduct our business completely above board and with the player s interest our number one concern. Trenary and it appears you seem to have nothing in mind but making a profit. Quit bugging us. Until we have no other option, On the Wire will be getting our business. Boomer Humphreys League Operator OPAL/APA The above e-mail was then forwarded to Jason Bowman - APA National and this was his response. Subj: RE: Quit bugging us Date: 9/12/2001 2:08:08 PM Mountain Daylight Time From: jbowman@poolplayers.com (Jason Bowman) To: Cheeses4u@aol.com ( Cheeses4u@aol.com ) DonFirst of all, let me apologize for Boomer s harsh comments. While I understand sometimes our people may have very strong beliefs, we always encourage them to conduct themselves in a professional manner - this was not the case with this message. I ve spoken with both Merle and Boomer s Support Representative and the head of our Franchise Support Dept. concerning this matter, however Boomer has stood fast in not wanting to work with your publication, and unfortunately we cannot force them to do so - although I see no basis for this decision. Our national office as well as myself certainly appreciate the support APA receives from On the Break. From what I can tell, many of our League Operators that are currently working with you, understand this as well. You can count on continuing to receive both information and assistance from our national office, however there s not much more we can do as far as Merle and Boomer are concerned. I hope this does not cause too much inconvenience for you or your staff, and I look forward to continuing to work with you in the future. In The Corner... with

Brad Gowin, Portland, OR

King of the Hill An Ongoing Tournament

In August I wrote an article about the relationship between the pool room owners and top players, with a proposal for a solution. In this article I mentioned the room owners feelings about top players and also the top players feelings about the room owners. In September Charles H. Tupper responded with an article of his own. Sir, your article took up two pages to say what I said in one paragraph! And you didn t even comment on the players feelings! If you think about what you wrote, you might change your opinion. Your statement about players not hanging up their cues or emptying ashtrays is okay if you want to compare your poolroom to McDonald s. Besides, most good players carry their own cues. I work at a poolroom and take personal pride in maintaining a clean room for the customer. I cater to and pick up after everyone that comes in, during their visit and after they leave. I would like to think it makes the customers feel special, so they would return more often. After all, doesn t a poolroom fall into the service oriented business category? Your statement about the cloth had some merit, but isn t altogether true. The white lines on the table are not from the cloth wearing out. They are from the cue ball, much like when a car does a burnout on the pavement. The pavement isn t worn out. It s the tire wearing. Simonis cloth is made with a double worsted weave. That s why you can get so many hours on a table before it needs recovering. It s the cue ball wearing, not the cloth. Cue balls are inexpensive and easy to replace. And why shouldn t people practice their break? They are paying a decent amount of money to rent the tables, aren t they? Your viewpoint about players hustling innocent customers is common. Over the years, I have learned many things. One of them is, nice guys don t get hustled. Only hustlers get hustled. The reason they play is because they have enough larceny in their hearts, they think they can steal your money. And when they lose, they cry hustler ! If they truly were a nice guy, they wouldn t gamble! With the format I presented this would take care of itself. There could be a large board exhibiting the names of the top six players. Each name could have a challenge list underneath it. People wishing to challenge could write their names on the list. The players would be required to defend their position to all challengers, playing each challenger a maximum of one match per day. With their names up on the board, it would be difficult for them to sneak up and hustle an innocent customer. You did say that this idea would not work because of the numbers. The room owner needs to see where he could benefit from such a proposal. To do this, I will use the poolroom I work at for an example. 500 people could be a safe, low estimate of our customer base. Of these 500 people, approximately 100 come in five or more days a week. Approximately 200 come in three to four times a week. The rest come in one to two times a week. If only 10 percent of our customer base became inspired to practice one hour more each time they came in because of this King of the Hill tournament, the pool room owner would naturally increase his income. Five percent would increase the owners income! Your article was well written, but it was about your past experience and your viewpoint that pool is never going to change. You could compare it to two men falling into a pit of mud. The first man sits up, looks around, sees all the

mud covering his clothing and starts complaining. The second man views his situation and looks up at the sky. Seeing a way out, he climbs up to the grass and waits for the rain to wash away the mud. There are two types of people in the world, those that view the problem and those that view the answer. Evolution is a process occurring in all things. To evolve is to change. We cannot look and compare ourselves to the past. We must look to the future and evolve towards it. Pool and billiards must evolve in order to bring about corporate sponsorship. We need to market this game like golf. Everyone, at all levels of play, are encouraged to enjoy the sport. Instruction is considered a fun and necessary thing to do. Improvement is encouraged. Everyone treats each other with respect. A little push in the right direction might help pool evolve more quickly towards its destiny. I believe the room owners could give pool that little push it needs. Who knows? It might even be profitable. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! My proposal was for the top 6 players. These players would receive discounts on their pool time, but would be required to earn it. The first three players would receive free pool time. These players could be numbered 1,2,and 3. The next three players would receive pool time at a 50 percent discount. These players could be numbered 4,5, and 6. In order for these players to receive such benefits, they would have to maintain their status on a month-to-month basis. The top three players would need to play each other a minimum of once a month. These matches would be a $50 entry, tournament match, race to 9, with $100 going to the winner. The format would be... Player 1 vs. Player 2 Player 1 vs. Player 3 Player 2 vs. Player 3 The next three players would also play each other a minimum of once a month. These matches would also be $50 entry, tournament matches, race to 9, with $100 going to the winner. The format would be... Player 4 vs. Player 5 Player 4 vs. Player 6 Player 5 vs. Player 6 Accurate records of each match would be kept. Players would earn their spots according to win-loss records. The first three players would also play the next three players once per month, with the same format... Player 1 vs. Player 4 Player 2 vs. Player 5 Player 3 vs. Player 6 If any of the three lower rated players win a match against their higher level player, they would exchange places with that player. Also, players 4,5, and 6 must be prepared to defend their status against challenges during that month. These matches would be along the same format. If beaten, the new player would receive said benefits for the remainder of that month, with the responsibility of finishing his opponents matches (if needed). A chart would be visible, showing each player s name in their designated position, along with their designated discount. Each one of these players must present themselves in such a way as to enhance the game. They must act like gentlemen and present a positive image. They must also be aware, if there is a waiting list and people are willing to pay pool time, they have the option to pay full price or give up the table. If they are playing another individual, that s another story. Ground rules could be different from one poolroom to another.

amateur poolplayers compete for nation s most prestigious title Eighth Annual U.S. Amateur Championship Returns to Baltimore

from: Jason Bowman - Marketing Department

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (Sept. 15, 2001) The best of the best in the world of amateur billiards will be in the Baltimore area Nov. 2-4, when the American Poolplayers Association (APA) hosts the 2001 U.S. Amateur Championship at Champion Billiards. The 128-player tournament is the only non-handicapped national tournament sanctioned by the APA and is open to both members and non-members alike. U.S. Amateur Championship participants compete in a double elimination race-to-7 with a maximum of five games of 8-Ball and eight of 9Ball. Once the field is narrowed to two, the final match becomes a single elimination race-to-11 with up to 13 games of 9-Ball and eight of 8-Ball. Players advance to the U.S. Amateur

Championship by qualifying in one of 19 Preliminary Rounds at regional sites throughout the country scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 15-16. The 126 qualifiers will join last year s champion David Rowell of Birmingham, Ala., and 3-time runner-up John Binion of Detroit in the national competition for the 2001 Champion title. The state of Maryland is home to two of the APA s largest League areas, with more than 1,500 teams and 11,000 players, so hosting the event in Baltimore was a logical one for the APA. The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League (8-Ball) and Molson 9-Ball League throughout the United States, and as the Canadian Pool

50 Greatest Players of the Century The obvious person that was left off this list was Minnesota Fats (Rudolph Wanderone). It is the feeling of On The Break that his uniqueness, style and personality gave a gift to the game of pool. Fats was a legend in his own time. He gave pool more popular exposure than any other player in history. Fats was a hustler but most of all he was a showman. He was heard to say many times, I am the greatest pool player that ever lived. Karen wins 4th title Sandia Casino Albuquerque, New Mexico September 6-9

Karen Corr is riding high after her 4th WPBA title this year. She was victorious over Allison Fisher 7-6. A controversial call ! Leading the match 6-5 Karen missed after being forced to hurry on the 9-Ball when the tournament director Steve Tipton had told her she had already had one extension for that game. Officials referring to the ESPN tape determined that Karen had not had her extension. And the shot was set back up on the table to allow Karen to try again. She missed again. Allison ties it 6-6. Karen was able to defeat Allison in a hill hill match. Fisher did not pocket any balls after her break in the final game which allowed Corr to run to a combination / carom on the 3-ball for the win. Ismael Moro Paez

This was forwarded to us from Linda Carter for publication. This is from Jeanette Lee, we will start a collection at the Tigard tournament. Hey, I don t know if you know Ismael Moro Paez, but he had a severe heart attack in Japan while he was at the World Games. He had to have heart surgery immediately and thank God, he survived. It was really hard on him financially since he can t work for a few months and his wife is a housewife. Anyway, a few of us who care about him started taking a collection for him in Japan and fellow players and even Japanese fans and world games staff all started chipping in and it s been going really well. I was wondering if you could help me get the word out through emails and magazines in the States. All contributions can be sent to Ismael Paez, c/o Jeanette Lee Foundation at 1427 W. 86th Street. Suite 183. Indianapolis, IN 46260. I would even suggest having tournament directors put together a collection box for the Moro Paez fund. It s such a wonderful thing and I know you wouldn t wish a major heart attack on anyone. I was there in the hospital with him. He was in good spirits and yet financial burden weighed on his shoulder. He didn t have medical insurance. I know the billiard organizations said they will help but we still don t know how much. Please do what you can. Please, he s still there. His wife Ana is wonderful and they are going through a hard time. You don t have to know them personally, you just have to know pain and hard times and decide you want to help. Well, that s all. Japan showed so much support, it made us cry. I want him to know that the United States is with him too. Oh yeah, for anyone that wants it, I would be glad to send free personally autographed poster of me to any donations over fifty dollars. I know it s not much but I don t know what else to do in addition to the time and money I ve already donated. It s for a good cause. Also, please call or email this to all those you think know him and all the media that you can to print this request. Thanks. All my respect, Jeanette

Corey Deuel Wins U.S. Open Corey Goes Undefeated 5/6

by: Don Cheese Akerlow

September 16, 2001 Corey Deuel from West Jefferson, Ohio has become the first man in history to win the U. S. Open Championship without losing a game in the final match, with a crushing 11 games to 0 victory over the 2001 World Pool Champion, Mike Immonen. Corey played virtually flawless 9 Ball and kept the title in the U. S. for another year.

Canada Continues

Corey was unstoppable all week. Deuel mentioned after the tournament, that when the national anthem was played before the final match, tears came to his eyes and said that he was proud to win the event as an American. 1 2 3 4

not, I will try to do something to relieve the congestion in that area. I want to thank all the sponsors for your support with this event. Without your help this tournament would not have been as successful. Budweiser, Grahams Home Recreation Center, Jim Beam, Gripper Billiard Products, Super 8 Motel, Aces Casino and Pepsi were all great. Also thanks to Sarah at Tuxedo Gallery for supplying me with my tuxedos. I would also like to thank Nita for all her hard work on the board and making my job a lot easier. And another thank you to all my staff over the weekend. You all worked very hard and I received many compliments on the service the players received. So now that I have turned this into an Academy Awards speech lets move on to the pool. The 96 player field was made up of 79 players from out of town and 17 local players, and what a group of talent it (l to r) Clay Sizemore, Mike Massey, Nita Saddler was. All the players displayed a lot of class, sportsmanship and talent both at the tables and away from them also. Play opened Saturday morning at 10:00 am as I was able to do the players meeting and draw on Friday night. The first two rounds took some time to get through, but once we got over to the B-side play picked up with the matches going to 7. With great talent spread all over the board there were great matches to watch all day long. One of the opening round matches put Stan Tourangeau against Jeff Boucher. Stan edged it out 9-7 and went on to tie Dan Louie for 5th - 6th. A new sparkling young talent that had a great tournament was Nick Kruger. At the age of 21 Nick ran through his first few rounds with ease. He then ran into John Horsfall. Managing his emotions very well Nick defeated John 9-7. He (l to r) Clay Sizemore, John Horsfall, Nita Saddler then lost to Edwin Montell 9-2 and got sent to the B-side. There he went on to beat Creigh Dumo 7-5, Mike Massey 7-4, and Dan Louie 7-6 before bowing out to John Horsfall 7-1 and finishing a very strong 4th place. Great play Nick. Our 3rd place finisher Kris Iverson opened play with a bye. He then defeated Charlie Brown 9-8, Wayne Boyd 9-6, Dave Snyder 9-8 and Brady Gollan 9-5 to earn a spot in the winners final. Once there he matched up against Edwin Montell. Edwin had been busy cutting his own path to the winners final. After winning his opening round match against Rachael Abbink 9-7, he then defeated Stacey Mallot 9-6, Mike Massey 9-5, Larry Nelson 9-5, Nick Kruger 9-2 and Stan Tourangeau 9-3 to face off with Kris for the drivers seat. Both players played great and the match could have gone either way, but Edwin was able to pull it out 9-7 to claim a spot in the finals. The only question left was who would he play? And the answer to that was John Horsfall. John

PUYALLUP Wayne s Inn WHERE PUYALLUP ENDS AND THE GOOD TIMES BEGIN

opened the tournament with a first round bye. He then defeated Scott Brasher 93 and T J Frank 9-2 before losing to Nick 7-9. After a trip to the B-side he defeated John Doherty 7-4, Wayne Boyd 7-3, T R Olson 7-3, Brady Gollan 7-5, Stan Tourangeau 7-3, Nick Kruger 7-1 and Kris Iverson 7-1 to set up the finals. And the way he was going it looked as if two matches would be needed to decide the Spokane Open champion. The first set started with Edwin winning the first 2 games. John answered right back with 3 of his own and was looking to make it 4-2 but an unlikely miss on the 9 enabled Edwin to tie it at 3. That seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match. John just never got anything going after that and Edwin slowly pulled away to win the set 9-6. In the process it made it 5 wins in a row for our friends from Canada. Good job Edwin. Again I would like to thank all the players that took the time to come to this event. The best compliment to me is that the players continue to do so. I also want to thank the ownership of McQ s Jerry Fouts and Gary Early for allowing me to put these events together and Mike Yost our G.M. for all your help. If you all thought this tournament was good wait till next year as I am only getting started. 1st Edwin Montell, Calgary Ab $3,000 + $300 side pot 2nd John Horsfall, Vancouver, BC $1,600 3rd Kris Iverson, Seattle, WA $1,000 4th Nick Kruger, Penticton, BC $ 700 5th Dan Louie, Seattle, WA $ 400 5th Stan Tourangeau, Vancouver, BC $ 400 7th Mike Massey, Las Vegas, NV $ 300 7th Brady Gollan, Kelowna, BC $ 300 9th Creigh Dumo, Seattle, WA $ 225 9th Eddie Carrido, Seattle, WA $ 225 9th T R Olson, Great Falls, MT $ 225 9th Jeremy Whitesell, Hermiston, OR $ 225 13th Steve Lingelbach, Troutdale, OR $ 150 13th Paul Marquez, Portland, OR $ 150 13th T J Frank, Coeur d Alene, ID $ 150 13th Wayne Boyd, Coulee Dam, WA $ 150 17th Larry Nelson, Seattle, WA $ 100 17th Jack Heggie, Omak, WA $ 100 17th John Doherty, Seattle, WA $ 100 17th Kenny Trambitas, Spokane, WA $ 100 17th Todd Ruhlen, Seattle, WA $ 100 17th Tony Balzer, Salem, OR $ 100 17th Junior Torlentino, Seattle, WA $ 100 17th Dave Snyder, Tri Cities, WA $ 100

NO COMPROMISE.......POOL HALL JUNKIES The Exclusive Inside Story that we were about to make. It was a great little piece of film. Jim Chapman then went on to ask about where the movie is going from here. Callahan: Well, the next major film festival coming up is Sundance. I think that would be the best place to debut the film. Sundance really caters to independent films of this nature writer/director/actor driven films and it s always a bonus that we shot the whole movie in Salt Lake City. It s like kismet; it could be a great serendipitous situation for us. All along, I had a few questions that were burning in me. Wilmot: In this movie you have an amazing array of actors. You have two Academy Award winning actors: Christopher Walkin and Rod Steiger. Chazz Palmintari along with Rick Schroder, who is a big television star, both play major roles. How in the world did you get these people? Callahan: Well, I had a lot of help from Karen Beninati. She was able to bring this project to the William Morris Agency and she was really able to champion it there. She was able to convince the people there to give me a chance, and meet with these actors.

Callahan: When I went to meet with Chazz in New York we spoke, and the (l to r) Mars Callahan, Karen Beninati thing that was so great about Chazz is that Chazz s to the set of NYPD Blue to talk to him career was sort of similar to mine in in his trailer and we started sharing war the sense that someone took a chance stories. He was enthusiastic about the on him and let him star in a film that project from the get-go. He was he wrote. [A Bronx Tale, co-starring amazing to work with. You know, he s a big TV star, and yet he was still Robert De Niro] And so he saw a lot humble enough and gracious enough of me in him at that early stage and he to help us move equipment when we said, I ll do this film for you on one were under time constraints. And condition . And I said, What s that? . Alison Eastwood was amazing. She And he says, Some day when a kid was actually a friend of a friend of comes up to you and needs a break, mine, and so, right before we left to go you ll do what I did for you for to Salt Lake City, we still didn t have a female lead. And so this friend of mine said, What about Alison Eastwood? And I said, Amazing, fantastic. So Chris Corso and I had dinner with her and she was very enthusiastic about the project and very supportive. She s been a big champion of independent films throughout her career, and so she came forward and championed this project as well. And then of course, we had no idea we were going to get Rod Steiger. We were actually in Salt Lake City already and we needed someone to play the role of Nick, but I thought that in a million years we d never be able to get him at this point. $40 Entry Fee per team - Race to 5 But the cast had started to shape up Double Elimination - BCA Rules and the script was tighter than it had ever been so we sent this final polished Tournament open to first 32 paid teams version over to Rod in the eleventh Players meeting Saturday Oct 20th at 10 AM hour and he came aboard. I m just very Doors open at 9 AM blessed to have him. Wilmot: How did you happen to pick Robert Le Blanc?

factors that could become involved it s a million-to-one shot that we could get Christopher Walken. So, I think there was perhaps divine intervention. I think there was a lot of luck involved. Beninati: At the end of the day it comes down to the fact that it was a good script and it starts from there. Wilmot: How did you get that opportunity to get the script to him? Beninati: Well, umm, it s called persistence and believing in something and knowing that now there s a goal. And we wanted Christopher Walken and we wanted Mars to star in the movie and direct it and that was it. Callahan: A lot of people said, Oh, you ve got to be reasonable . Beninati: Forget it. Callahan: We don t believe in reasonable . Beninati: Not going to happen. Callahan: You gotta start somewhere and we wanted to start where our dreams were. Ultimately, also, I have to give kudos to Christopher Walken because he . Beninati: .he stuck in there. Callahan: .because he was the first person to sign onto the film. He was the first actor to believe in the film before anybody, which is the hardest point, because an actor wants to know who else is going to be in the movie. He wants to know that he s not just the only guy carrying the movie. So the fact that he did sign on first to do the film, that he believed in me, and took his chance on a young filmmaker was I m just eternally grateful for that. Wilmot: Well, did Christopher Walken have any influence on obtaining the other actors? Callahan: Well, he didn t get on the phone and make phone calls and say, Hey, do this movie , but he might as well have, because every actor in this

Callahan: When we were first writing this, we would all hang out at the Hollywood Athletic Club and shoot pool and tell stories and Robert Le Blanc is one of the most colorful and interesting human beings I ve ever known. So he would always entertain us with all these amazing stories of being on the road and things like that. And Robert Tobin, Robert Le Blanc and myself used to go have lunch every single day. The three of us would sit around and tell stories and then Chris and I would go and write every day. We had about 3 or 4 scripts worth of material that we had to hone down into one movie. And so when it came down to it, we always had Robert Le Blanc in mind for something in the movie. So it was great when Robert was able to come up and work as technical advisor and play the role of the Number One pool player in the world. Le Blanc: The main reason it worked was because of Mars, because Mars is an action kinda guy. Mars has been in the action world for many, many years gambling, cards, pool. And that s why the whole thing came together. He brought that to the set and that was what the mood was. It was totally believable. Chapman: What about Mike Massey? Callahan: Paul Sorvino was supposed to play the role of St. Louie Louie but had to drop out at the last moment. Fortunately for us, Mike had heard about the movie in Chicago from Mike Clark of Olhausen when they were doing the ESPN Trick Shot Magic Championship. Chapman: Which he won, by the way. Callahan: Yes. Mike coincidentally had a trick shot show in Salt Lake City the next day or so. He invited us and he was great. So he got the role. Chapman: Possibly the best role a professional pool player has had in a pool movie. I also noticed that the actors really showed you a lot of respect. They really listened to you. Callahan: Well yeah. There s a combination of a couple of things there. The first thing is that they are tremendous professionals. There are no B actors in this movie. These guys are the best of the best. And so when you re a top professional at anything, you take what you do very seriously and you grant the people around you the respect that they deserve. By doing that, they made me be able to do my job a lot better and I was able to step up my acting game and my directing game. You know, this is a special world that we all live in in the billiard community and the pool world it s a very unique sort of backdrop and a subculture. And because I m so familiar with it, I know how to walk-thewalk and talk-the-talk. They [the other actors] were able to recognize that. So, (Pool Hall Junkies continued on page 15)

NO COMPROMISE.......POOL HALL JUNKIES it was a mutually beneficial relationship in that respect. Chapman: And I think they saw you put forth the hours and the energy . Callahan: Well, you know, you get opportunities like this once in a lifetime if ever. And there is no room for being tired; there is no room for any kind of complaints. When you have an opportunity like this you have to show up, be professional, dedicated, cheerful, and delivering. This is something that I ve dreamed about my whole life to be able to live my dream and to do this project the way I wanted to do it and with the people I wanted to do it with. Jim then asked a good question that every pool fan would want to know the answer to. Chapman: So how did the name Hard Times come about? [The name of the main pool room in the movie.] Callahan: Well, we always liked the name, Hard Times . The original pool hall that we wrote the story about was actually the old Hollywood Billiards that used to be on Hollywood and Western. It s the old underground pool hall with brick walls and posts holding up the ceiling. It was a great old place lots of character; lots of stories in there. But it was called Hollywood Billiards and we originally wanted to set the story in New Orleans, so Hollywood Billiards was not an appropriate name. We wound up shooting at E.O. s, which was great. And I gotta say, because this is very important to me, that the people at E.O. s [In Salt Lake City] were the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life Darren and Momma and their entire family. Beninati: They totally took care of us. Callahan: They were like family; they embraced us like members of their own family. Corso: How about all of the sponsors who came through? Callahan: Oh, amazing. Olhausen was wonderful. Corso: Southwest Lori Franklin . Callahan: The cue that she gave us for the film is such a beautiful cue. And it shows up so beautiful on film it s the rich, dark, ebony wood. It s the perfect cue for the hero in the film to have. Chapman: But now that the cue is broken smashed . Callahan: Ah, it was never really broken it was a prop! Beninati: And Olhausen built 18 pool tables for us. They shipped them up; they set them up. They tore them down and they took them home. And they donated all the balls and the chalk. Callahan: They were wonderful and of course, let s not forget Jim Chapman and Herb Wilmot of Westar International who have been great promotional supporters for all of us and made life on the set so much easier. They provided the cues and accessories for the set. And Lissa Pallo, upstairs in this beautiful hotel, looking gorgeous . Corso: And Sardo Tight Rack. Jim was able to bring them on board as a fourth sponsor. Chapman: Well, being the distributor of the Sardo Tight Rack, it just made good sense to me. Corso: And I just want to make a quick mention of AAA Billiards. Callahan: Oh that s right. We were doing some insert shots for the opening scene itself and we were stuck. We needed to shoot some extensive abstract pool sequences of close-ups of pockets and the length of a pool cue as well as some other filler-shots that we didn t have. So Chris got on the phone and spoke to Bruce down at AAA Billiards in Beverly Hills and Bruce was instantly accommodating. They brought a pool table down there and got it set up and everything at the last minute and the stuff turned out beautiful and wound up being the whole opening sequence of the film. At that point, more sushi and libations were brought in. There was laughter and stories and I couldn t help but notice that a special aura hovered above the group people who were infused with inspiration and success. But I also knew that that had to be built upon a foundation, and Karen Beninati and Chris Corso were the cornerstones of that foundation. Nothing of value ever comes without a struggle. And no one gets to the top without help. The moment couldn t be lost; I had to find out. Wilmot: Karen, what has been your path to get to this point? Beninati: Actually, I have been producing now for about two and a half years. I started off in the film business by working for various producers and distribution companies and foreign sales companies and kinda finding my way through. And I have a knack for talent and a knack for writers and working with them in pictures and projects. Mars and I met in the early stages of my career and together we were able to grow and build something together.

Callahan: We hit it off instantly. Actually Karen and I met on the set of my first film. She knows the ins and outs and everyone loves her and they all respect her instincts for product and scripts and her eye for talent. So when she went to the William Morris Agency and said, This is somebody that you guys need to pay attention to, they listened. And so she is the reason why we are all here right now. Wilmot: How do you feel about this movie Pool Hall Junkies? How would you compare this to the other films that you ve been involved in? Beninati: Well for me, the fact that we did this film, and the fact that we did it the way we wanted to do it it s a dream come true. I set out to do one thing and that was to make this film the exact way we wanted to make it. I wouldn t settle for anything else. Wilmot: There seems to be a common theme between Mars and yourself and that is you will not compromise. Beninati: Right. Callahan: If a studio came by and said, Here s a hundred million dollars to go make Pool Hall Junkies and we re going to get Steven Spielburg to direct it and Tom Cruise to play Johnny, we had to all agree to say no. Corso: We made that agreement. Callahan: We re gonna say, No, we re not going to go ahead and take that choice . So we had to be of like mind in that respect going into it because it did come up many times. People tried to get us to compromise. Beninati: They d beat you down and they d say, oh . Callahan: . you ll never get the movie made, and we re not gonna give you the money and this and that. So we had to be able to say, Well okay, we ll walk away then . And eventually because of the support of the cast and our other producers Tucker Tooley and Vince Newman of Newman/Tooley Films, everybody at Gold Star Films and Cutting Edge Entertainment we were able to convince all the nay sayers that they should say yes, take a chance. Wilmot: So it happened piece after piece; obstacle after obstacle. Callahan: Absolutely. Wilmot: And with the faith that you had and the belief, the will and the determination . Callahan: Yeah, but I tell you also what s really great is that at no point during this whole ride did we ever lose the support of the people around us my family, my parents, Robert Tobin, the William Morris Agency, which includes Rena Ronson, Cassian Elwes and Janine Giaime they championed this project, believed in it. You know, on a personal level, if the rest of the world is saying, Who in the heck are you? How are you gonna get a chance to make this movie? What have you ever done before? And your friends and your family say, You can do it. Don t give up . Those are the people that help you renew your confidence and help you go out in the world and slay those dragons. Chapman: You say, Hey, we won t compromise and Pool Hall Junkies is going to

It was Jim who then asked the $64,000 question. So when is it coming out ?

THE WONDER SHOT

This trick shot is especially designed for the nine foot table. If you are attempting this shot on an eight foot or seven foot table you will have to rack the 15 object balls above the normal spot where they are usually racked. Set up the object balls as shown. Ball A was the object ball taken from the foot spot and put in the back of the rack as shown. The cue ball is on the head spot as shown. Using high left english and a moderate stroke, shoot the cue ball for the second diamond. The cue ball will rebound off of two cushions and hit the side of Ball A. Ball A will carom off of the other object ball and follow the path to the corner pocket as shown. A note: Ball A must be frozen to the two object balls as shown. A few test shots may be required to find the correct angle off of the first rail and into the second. This shot will truly amaze your friends ! Spend some quality practice time on this one till you master it.

APA MEMBERS TAKE HOME

MORE THAN $750,000

More than 10,000 poolplayers converged on Las Vegas for the 21st Annual APA National Team Championships from: Jason Bowman - Marketing Department

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (September 15, 2001) The world s largest pool extravaganza hit the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Aug. 17 25, as the American Poolplayers Association (APA) hosted its annual National Team Championships. After nine days of grueling competition, three new national champions were crowned in the $500,000 Camel 8Ball and $100,000 Molson 9-Ball National Team Championships and over $200,000 was paid out in MiniMania tournaments. In the Camel 8-Ball Open Division, Huly s Hooligans of Cape Girardeau, Mo., defeated Wild Cards of Las Vegas in a 3-0 shutout in the finals to win the championship and $25,000 of the $470,000 cash purse. Despite the lopsided match score, the contest was much closer than it appeared. Rounding out the Ladies Division in 5 th Place was Heat is On of Memphis, Tenn., Bring It On of Ontario, Calif., Did I Do That of Vancouver, Wash., and Refuse to Lose of Hopedale, Mass. Total cash payout in the Ladies Division was $39,000. In the Molson 9-Ball Division the four teams that tied for 5th Place were Absolute Power of Des Moines, Iowa, Southern Draw of Atlanta, Stric 9 of Seattle and Katos-Mike of Peoria, Ill. After winning their divisions in weekly 8-Ball APA Pool League and Molson 9-Ball League play and then placing in Local Team Championships throughout the United States and Canada, 530 Open Division teams, 49 Ladies Division teams and 203 9-Ball teams, all consisting of five to eight players, qualified to compete in the 2001 National Team Championships.

In addition to the amateur championships, players from around the country got a chance to compete with some of the top pro players in the game during the Camel Ladies Night and Camel 8Ball Classic Pro-Am exhibitions. In the Camel 8-Ball Classic Pro-Am, APA co-founder and former professional player Larry The Ice Man Hubbart and teammates Todd Rowitz (SL6) and Linda Garcher (SL3) defeated WPBA star Dawn Hopkins and amateurs Joe Wortham (SL6) and Matt Zeman (SL4) to win $2,000. Pool enthusiasts also had the opportunity to watch the pros shoot-it-out in the 7 Games of the Casbah a competition of 7 nontraditional pool activities that pit pro players against each other in contests, such as, Fastest Break and 9-on-the-Break competitions. Shannon The Cannon Daulton won the contest with 50 overall points after a strong showing in each competition. Tom Dr. Cue Rossman finished in a close 2 nd Place (47 points) and Razor Ray Schultz (41 points) finished in 3rd. Other professional players in the event included Vivian Villereal, Allen and Dawn Hopkins, Ming Ng and Nicole Manici. In addition, the APA conducted over 600 MiniMania tournaments, which took place daily and were open to all APA members. The MiniMania tournaments offered multiple formats with 100% prize money payback purses. The National Team Championships marked the second time in APA history that a National Tournament was broadcast live via Web cameras, giving family and friends unable to attend the event the ability to watch at home on www.poolplayers.com.

Seattle Takes Home The Win from: Nita Saddler, Assistant Tournament Director Spokane, WA On September 15th and 16th, McQ s held our bi-annual B class 8-ball tournament. We were only planning on taking 48 players, but with more wanting to get in it was nice to accommodate and open it up to more. We ended up getting 49 men and 6 women. Since we did have a minimum of 6 women we decided to throw in an extra $50 and pay the top woman. This ended up going to Anna Kirschenmann from Moscow, Idaho who also placed 9th, bringing home $100 total. Great job Anna! To make play go a little faster with the extra contestants we took in, we gave players the option to play their match on a 9 foot table as long as they both agreed. This helped out immensely and we appreciate everybody for working with us on that. Once again we had a great field with no major complaints. Play ran very smoothly and using three 9 ft tables along with our 5-8 footers saved us about 3 hours on Saturday. Saturday still made for a long day getting our field down to twelve players, but it worked out for the best on Sunday because the only people that had to come back were the ones in the money. The race for the top places proved to be a difficult one. Mark Raynor from Spokane and Zach Leech from Seattle were competing for the hammer. Both players were really strong in their game and we knew it would be a fight to move ahead. They were tied most of the match, but once they hit 3 games apiece in a race to five, Mark pulled ahead and won 5-3 for the drivers seat. Competing for 4th place was Rob Hamilton from Spokane, WA and Greg Gilliland from Coeur d Alene, ID. Even though Greg had previously beaten Rob in the winners bracket 5-4, Rob wasn t giving Greg any leeway and pulled off the match with an outstanding 5-0, leaving Greg with 4th and $200. Rob had then moved on to Zach Leech who had just lost to Mark Raynor for the drivers seat. Zach, still a little hot from his recent loss, smoked right through this match winning 5-1 and leaving Rob with 3rd and $300. Regaining his pride, Zach had a brutal two sets with Mark winning both sets 5-3 and claiming his 1st place victory along with $700 plus another $240 for the side pot. Mark was able to hold his own against Zach and although he didn t walk away as a newly pronounced A player, he left with 2nd place and $500, which is nothing to be disappointed about. This tournament I am sure will continue to get more exciting and even better than before. I m looking forward to the next one! Final Placings: 1st Zach Leech Seattle, WA $700 + $240 side pot 2nd Mark Raynor Spokane, WA $500 3rd Rob Hamilton Spokane, WA $300 4th Greg Gilliland Coeur d Alene, ID $200 5th Stacy Mallot Tri Cities, WA $150 5th Sal Saenz $150 7th Daryl Stenstrom Charlo, MT $100 7th Roy Garza Yakima, WA $100 9th Jason DeFilippis Spokane, WA $ 50 9th John Marshall Spokane, WA $ 50 9th Anna Kirschenmann Moscow, ID $ 50 9th Ed Hobbs Seattle, WA $ 50

Mike has it set up that no one will have to play a tour member from their region until the 3rd round on the winner s side. The Northwest s representatives that we will be sending to L.A. are, in order of qualifying: 1st Linda Carter 2nd Mary Hopkin 3rd Sara Schwefel 4th Kim Gates 5th Noriyo Yurino 6th Jo Woodward 7th Kim Sijer 8th Patty Macheras 9th Tamre Geene Rogers Noriyo will not be allowed to play in this event as it conflicts with the Japanese Billiards Association s policy, so that means Tamre will be allowed to play in her place. Good luck, everyone! Pro player Ismael Morrow Paez had a heart attack in Japan and is still hospitalized. He had no insurance. Donations can be made through the ACW and we will send them on to the fund that Jeanette Lee has set up. She will send an autographed poster for any donations over $50. ACW address is 27012 47th Ave. S., #105, Kent, WA 98032. Thanks to Dan Coffman, our new webmaster! He has added improvements and current standings to our site, ACWpool.com. Please let us know if there are any dead links, or ones that take you to our old site which is now a porn site. Also, be sure to shop and make all your purchases from our new mall, http://supereshops.bigsmart.com/ mall/ With 935 stores to shop from, you will always find a deal somewhere on anything you want to buy, from groceries and office supplies, to toys, clothing, insurance, and cars. We are planning the ACW awards banquet/ State tournament on Nov. 10-11 at the Riverside Casino. If you would like to donate items or prize money to the banquet, please call the ACW at 253-373-9999. We want to make this bigger and better than ever!

NO COMPROMISE.......POOL HALL JUNKIES be it and we are going to direct, we are going to star, we are gonna write. Callahan: And you know what, I think the quality of the film reflects that. If I was asked to direct a movie about doctors, I d probably not be the best guy for the job. But if you re asking me to direct a pool movie or a poker movie then you better call Mars Callahan! I turned then to Chris Corso. None of this could have happened without him either. Wilmot: Chris, when did you meet Mars and how did you both get involved in the writing of this? Corso: That s a good question, because we met in the poolroom and we met within the pool world, which is a world that we love.

Wilmot: How did it come about that you both knew that you both were interested in writing a script about pool? Callahan: Well, I ll tell you. When Chris and I met, I was hustling pool at the Hollywood Athletic Club and I was beating everybody down there and then Chris comes up and I say, well, I haven t played this guy yet. So I try to get him in a game. Of course, Chris plays way better than I did at the time he still does. Corso: We arranged a spot. Callahan: He gave me some weight and he wound up taunting me a little bit. He wound up beating me; so it was instant respect. So then we started talking

Charlie Nowell Memorial Tournament September 15, 2001

from: Dick Jones, Manager/Tournament Director

Bozeman, MT Final standings for the Charlie Nowell Memorial Pool Tournament held Saturday September 15, 2001 at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, Montana. The format for this tournament was eight ball blind draw doubles. Because Charlie was one of those people that would chose a combination shot over a straight in shot, we added that little twist to this tournament. Each player had to attempt at least one combination shot when it was their turn at the table (Wow what a struggle). All the players did have a great time. A BIG Thank You to Viking Cue Company for their donation of an absolutely gorgeous cue stick for the raffle. The cue stick was won by Bobbye Henrichs. The money that was generated from this tournament will go to a scholarship to help a young aspiring pool player attend one of the pool instructional schools. The winners won gift certificates (& trophies) donated by local merchants. Thank you. 1st Susie McRae & Rich Robinson Bozeman/Three Forks 2nd Elaine Comeau & Curt Watts Livingston/Bozeman 3rd Regan Wright & Leland Flint Bozeman/Three Forks 4th Rikki Evans & Mike Wright Bozeman/Bozeman 5/6 Loreen Carey & Mike Bradley Bozeman/Bozeman Dava Guptill & Wade McDonald Bozeman/Bozeman 7/8 Betty Bies & Bones Goodale Bozeman/Bozeman Brandon Buttars & Mike Stepic Belgrade/Bozeman 9/10 Barba Tuss & Bobby Orr Belgrade/Bozeman Sandy Drake & Ron Snell Bozeman/Bozeman Thanks for making this a great fund raiser for a great cause. Charlie, you would have been proud of us. We raised $358 in your name and yes we still miss you. Cheese Thank You for all that you did for this tournament. Thank You.

It was Jim who then asked the $64,000 question. Chapman: So when is it coming out? Callahan: I would predict don t hold me to it, but I would predict it should come out sometime mid 2002. But Karen had a different opinion the one I liked better. Beninati: It ll probably be February in 2002. February or March. Music to our ears. We all rose, went inside around the pool tables, chatted a bit and I took some more photos. The evening was waning, but I couldn t help but think that this was just the beginning. More, much more, was to come. And it will. Produced/written/photos Jim Chapman, Herb Wilmot, Westar International

This is the first in a series of articles following the progress of Pool Hall Junkies authorized by writer/director/actor Mars Callahan. Westar International has also been authorized to handle all promotional efforts for the film to the Billiard Industry. 800 995-8605

and we became friends. I said, You know, I think it s about time to make another pool movie. And from our discussions we sort of came together and we wrote Pool Hall Junkies. Wilmot: But if you co-wrote it, did you collaborate side-by-side or did you trade scripts back and forth? Corso: No, no. We spent every moment together. Callahan: Every moment together. We wrote the script every day, Monday through Friday from ten in the morning till seven at night. We wrote the script every day for six months. Chris strengths as a writer complimented my weaknesses, and my strengths complimented his weaknesses, so together we were able to write a pretty good script. Wilmot: So this has been a dream of yours to have this become a reality for ten years? Callahan: I gotta tell you every coin tossed in the fountain, every birthday cake that I blew out and made a wish, every eyelash that comes out you make a wish for the last ten years has been: I want to make Pool Hall Junkies. And so it was like it s a dream come true, really.
