After being in existence since 1894, Seattle s oldest pool hall has to close it s doors. John Teerink the club s owner since 1971 cited the parking problem in downtown Seattle as the biggest reason for the closure of the club. The club s history boasts of local and world class talent.

Story dedicated to my friend Art Schuff and mostly was written before he died in 1995. In Part One (last issue), Art and Pat mull over remembrances of the pool world in the Portland area during the 80 s and 90 s and the beginning of the new millennium, 20 to 30 years past. They recall why they had stopped playing pool back then, and in the process get the bug to go out and find a place to knock a few balls around. I wonder where we can go to play? Pat asked, as they brought the barrel of holiday decorations upstairs and turned off the basement lights. I don t want to drive all over town. I drive by a place called Captain Hook s Pool Emporium every now and then, Art said, let s try there. So they climbed into Pat s new Polutnaut fuel-cell car and off they went. I get almost 300 miles on one two-hour charge in this thing, Pat bragged, as he turned on the low-glare pink headlights in the approaching dusk. Yeah, but take it easy, you? You still drive like a maniac and my butt is getting bruised, Art complained. They found Captain Hook s just off the toll way and next to an international drive-through marketplace, to discover Valet parking only and a line of people waiting to get in. What do you say we look for another place, Pat suggested, not wanting to wait in line. No, let s check it out, Art urged. I ve had enough of riding in this thing for now. So they creaked and groaned out of the little machine and turned it over to a parking attendant who was dressed in a mylar zuitsuit designed to look like a pirate s wench. She was speaking rapidly into a neon green tube rising from her collar. Retina card? she asked Pat, who said no, so she stamped the back of Pat s hand with an invisible ink, jumped into the Polutnaut and zipped off. No one in the line of mostly young people had cue cases, and Pat noticed several people turning to stare at them like they were some kind of prehistoric creatures from the ice age. Well, scratching his beard, he guessed they probably were. More people lined up behind them, and Hollywood movie-set-style colored spotlights came on in the quick change from day to night, sweeping back and forth across the building and crowd below. event, Pat thought. He asked the person next in line and she said it was like this every night. The building itself was only about three stories high above ground and who knew how many deep. It was a newer building, probably one of those blown-in self-insulating polymer units. The walls had been shaped into forms of famous pirates and ships, treasure chests, palm trees and parrots, and were scattered with areas of glass block, even underfoot, through which shimmered images of people beyond iridescent and ghostly forms. Heat and mist blew from places unknown and swirled through rare tropical plants lining the curving walkway. The line moved fast and suddenly they were inside. Wow! was all Pat could manage, stopping short and causing Art to plow into him. Hi-Tech Wonderland! Wow! Well, if you ll get out of the way, I can see it for myself, muttered Art. Welcome to Captain Hook s a voice crooned into their ears, but no one was visibly speaking. What kind of place was this? Pat felt like he d accelerated into a time warp. The energy in the place was incredible, sucking him in as if by a receding tidal wave. He d heard of tsunami music before but this was the first time he d actually felt it. It wasn t loud and raucous, like the psychobabble of 20 years ago, but penetrated all the cells in his body with a myriad of changing vibrations and tones, pulling energy through, not unpleasantly. The use of color was everywhere, elusively, like the Aurora Borealis look at anything and it soon changed color and almost form. Curved prism lighting followed people like shadows casting auras. Laserlighted mist rose from the centers of tables, and neon servers, hoisting air disks full of glowing drinks, floated through the crowds on hoverboots. Letting the mist draw their eyes upward, Art and Pat saw a full-size wooden ship appear to float eerily above them, filling the entire three-story space. A skull and crossbones flag waved from its crow s nest, where two people were leaning from its rope rails, looking down. Turning his gaze downward, Pat saw the focus of their attention. A huge ship s stairway opened to below decks, where hordes of people swarmed and jostled. (2020 A Pool Odyssey continued on page 11)

The Evergreen division of the Association for Pool (TAP) will be putting on a $1,000 added 3person 8-ball pool tournament the weekend of January 19th, 2002. All current TAP members are welcomed to put a team together and participate. This event will be held at Jammers, The Pink Elephant and at Sharky s. The format is round robin play with three 6 team flights. The top 2 teams from each flight will advance to final double elimination board on Sunday Jan 20th at Sharky s. Maximum handicap is 15. It s a lot of Pool, a lot of fun and only $75 per team and limited to the first 24 paid entries. Spring session will be starting in February, statewide. We will be taking team registrations starting in January. Don t have TAP in your area? No problem, just find
at least 4 team captains to put a team together and we will do all the rest! Fall Sessions Titleholders event will be held at the Seven Feathers Casino on the Weekend of Feb 8th. This is our end of session State Championships with team, individual, and scotch doubles events. Over $10,000 will be awarded at this event that is held three times a year. Top teams qualify for the FREE trip to compete in TAP s National Team Championships in LAS VEGAS! One out of every 12 TAP teams wins the all expense paid trip. Northern Lights Shootout III from: Mark Hamilton
The Northern Lights Shootout III was another huge success with players coming from all over the country and Canada for that huge $4,000 first prize. Minneapolis, MN, Edmont, AB, Vancouver, BC, Winnepeg, MB, Billings, MT, Spokane, WA, Idaho, South Dakota were just some of the places these players came from. With 125 players in the tournament it was a tough road to the finals. Rick Marshall of Edmonton, AB proved to be the toughest player in the field as he wend undefeated into the finals
where he beat Edwin Montal from Calgary for the championship.Congratulations to Rick!! In the Womens division we had 20 women with Tasha Thomas of Edmonton, AB (who just happens to be Rick s girlfriend) coming out on top as she beat Tanya Hanig of Fargo, ND in the finals. Congratulations to Tasha!! What a great tournament. We hope to see everybody back next year. I want to thank everyone for coming.

Billiards for America Raises Funds & Spirits with Olhausen Table Sweepstakes

Olhausen Billiard Mfg., Inc. of Poway, CA added a new dimension of excitement to the Billiards for America fundraising event by donating an 8-foot Oak Augusta table in American Walnut Finish with Spruce cloth (retail value $3,395!). All event participants and organizers were eligible to enter and the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) executive director Stephen Ducoff conducted the Grand Prize drawing on December 2, 2001 at headquarters in Colorado Springs. It was extremely generous of Olhausen to make this donation and it generated so much enthusiasm among the event organizers and participants. It s a beautiful table and will be enjoyed for many years to come by Mr. Hank Eldrington of 29 Palms, California, said Mr. Ducoff, Needless to say, Mr. Eldrington was thrilled when I phoned to give him the good news. The Perfect Rack donated three of their racks that were given away a second place sweepstakes prizes. On November 10, 2001 over 200 billiard rooms throughout North America participated in Billiards for America. The BCA national office staff developed and coordinated the event that was cosponsored by the Women s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) and the American Poolplayers Association (APA). With over sixty of the 112 participating BCA rooms reporting results as of mid-December, the event has included over 1,195 participants and has raised $38,900. This figure is expected to increase dramatically as the other rooms report their earnings and up-to-date figures will be posted on the Play page of the BCA web site (http://www.bca-pool.com/). Each room was instructed to donate their proceeds directly to the September 11th relief fund of their choice. The APA leagues throughout the country also participated and channeled their donations through the APA home office that wrote a check for nearly $32,000 to the American Red Cross. The success of this event shows the solidarity and spirit of the billiard industry. I attended the three events that took place in Colorado Springs and saw first-hand the level of commitment and patriotism that can be found in room owners and pool players throughout North America, says Stephen Ducoff, executive director of the BCA. The events of September 11th have left us all feeling somewhat helpless and it is evident that Billiards for America allowed fans of the game to do something concrete and positive for the relief efforts. Many manufacturers and retailers donated prizes to local tournaments. Several manufacturers sent donations directly to relief funds in the name of the event. Jay Orner & Sons Billiard Company of Indianapolis, IN donated $1,000 to The American Red Cross. L.E.A.N.I. slate donated $3,000 to three relief funds: Save the Children, The Pentagon Fund and the September 11th Fund.

Three Ball Directional Shot This trick shot is one of many my wife sets up and shoots when she accompanies me at an Exhibition. Being a directional shot I will tell the audience where balls A and C are going and then ask a few people to guess where ball B is going. As you see by the diagram ball B follows ball A into the corner pocket. Many people guess one of the side pockets or the far corner pockets. This shot will help people understand carom angles. To set up the shot place ball A as shown at the first diamond from the corner pocket and froze against the rail. Ball B is one third of a ball above ball A and froze to ball A. Ball C is froze to ball B and ball C should be aimed for the corner pocket as shown by the dotted line. With a moderate stroke, hit the cue ball with high left english. The cue ball should be aimed so that the cue ball hits the rail and ball A at the same time. The balls will follow the solid black lines and disappear into the pockets. Next month I ll have a three ball shot that has a secret in its set up.

Beginnings and Endings One of the very best parts of playing pool, in addition to the mystique and sheer fun of it, is all the new beginnings. Think about it. Each time we approach a table, we have the opportunity to start a run of success. We have the chance to leave behind our paltry performances of the past, and let out our inner Willie Mosconi. We have lovingly, painfully nurtured that embryo from our first tentative strokes. Pool players are by nature, but not always obviously, very optimistic personalities. We never cease to hope/believe that THIS time we will find the zone and stay there for the duration. Just give me ONE MORE chance at the table!! Just wait until I BREAK again!! Oh, boy, am I going to play a GREAT safe on this character, NEXT time I get to the table Pool! Each shot, each turn at the table, each game and match, is a world of its own, orchestrated rhythms of clack and thunk; the quickening pulse of our dedication. One pure stroke can be both the doorway and the magic kingdom beyond. One sweetly finessed shot, one perfect pattern can turn the tides, in our confidence, in the opponent, in the outcome. We unceasingly believe in the possibilities, certain we have yet to attain our highest level. And we are right. The sirens sing to us from that place that place of perfect stroke and instinctual understanding. Sometimes we crash on the rocks; sometimes we serenely sail into safe harbor. I have always looked at pool as a microcosm of the worlds we each inhabit. Some of us are amazed, complicating our path with dead ends, wrong turns and great confusion. Some travel around the world to cross the street, running when stopping is better. Others of us pick our way through simply, doing what we can and accepting what is given us. Some slip and slide in and around, not warping the pattern while weaving a masterpiece. Others are construction workers hammers and saws, rebuilding again and again in pursuit of an ending that will stand. Some are magicians and some are drones. But we each believe in fresh starts. Beginning and ending and beginning again, spinning as surely through these seasons of cycles as the balls over the felt. Much like a roll of film, the development of one s pool game is based on exposure. First, you load the film. The unexposed film is ready to receive the image. Like the unexposed film, the student needs to be open minded, willing to take on the thoughts and ideas of the instructor. Without an open-minded approach, the learning process will be cloudy just as improper light exposure clouds a frame of film. An open mind is necessary. The next step is to set the exposure, focus and snap a shot. If the shutter speed is set incorrectly, the film will be too dark or too light. Improper focus will blur the image. Similarly, the pool student may not have received enough information to become enlightened. Too much information at one time will overwhelm the student. Correct exposure is a must. This step is repeated until the roll of film is used up and is ready to develop. The third step requires carefully handling the film in order to have it developed. The student must carefully analyze the information that he/she has received from the instructor without tainting it. During this development stage, careful treatment of the
information will result in a quality series of pictures over time. The clarity of these pictures depends on open-minded exposure, proper developing and correct teaching. As a student, you are responsible for the pictures you take. Whether your exposure is incorrect, your instructor is overwhelming you, or any other issue is interfering with your learning process, you must give proper feedback to your instructor. There is no other way the instructor will be able to know that a problem exists. By giving your instructor feedback, you will pave the way for another picture to be developed with perfect clarity. Exposure is important. As a pool player, you will only rise to the level you are exposed to. Point your camera in the right direction. Take some quality pictures and allow them to develop properly within yourself. You can and will become a product of the environment you expose yourself to. But don t get frustrated development takes time and care. It also takes time to find the correct photographic subject. Good luck in your search for the subject and be sure you have a fresh roll of film in your camera when you find it!

Allison Fisher World 9-Ball Champion The 2001 WPA World 9-Ball Championships, held in Amagasaki City, Japan on November 17-19, 2001 saw Allison Fisher emerge as the victor over Karen Corr 11-8 in the final round. Fisher won this title last in 1998. This is her fourth time winning this event overall. Karen Corr finished second again this year. The World 9Ball title is one of the few that has eluded Karen Corr in her career.

Jimmy Caras Suffers Stroke

I don t want to say that I have any more love of the game of pool than anybody else, but I would like to share an experience that I had. I was thinking I was sacrificing a lot. I decided in October to play on another league in a town that is approximately 70 miles NW of where I live. Leagues start about 7 pm on a Thursday night. Now this is after playing on a Tuesday night league in my home town, practicing on Monday nights, playing tournaments on Saturday and/or Sunday and playing in a weekly on Sunday afternoon. After the first week, I won three out of my four games on a four person team. Shot well, I was pleased with my games on how I shot. During the following week, coming up on the second week I would play, I started thinking about the 70 mile trip one way. So it s 140 miles coming back during the winter on icy roads, dangerous, and I started to feel that I was sacrificing a lot. I could be at home or doing something else. I figured I had to go do deliveries in this town and I would play this one last night and tell my captain that I wouldn t be playing as often, if he needed me OK. I got there about an hour before leagues would start. I talked to the owner of the bar for a few minutes and then went on, looked over towards the door and saw there were two people walking in that I knew. They happened to live 80 to 85 miles one way, so that would be a total of 160 to 170 miles. Then I ran into someone that lived 30 miles past where I lived. So you re looking at 100 miles which would be 200 miles round trip. Well I went on to win three out of four of my games there that night and I never did talk to my captain about not playing. Somehow all that self pit and all the whining, mind you I don t believe that any pool player on the face of the earth ever whines, so I guess I must be the first. Being that I knew three people that drove further than I did, kind of put it in perspective for me. I was just whining to myself. I guess, I questioned my commitment to playing in a different league and playing in a different town, even though I know the majority of the people that play on the leagues. I ve played them in tournaments before, won and lost. It s not just that, maybe I want to go play in this league - no, it is that I wanted to go play in this league and I still do. To me I recommitted to this game that we love so much and the league.
The Billiard Congress of America s oldest living Hall of Famer, Jimmy Caras, has suffered a stroke in Jacksonville, Florida. True to his pool playing abilities and his #10 ranking on Billiard Digest s Greatest Players of the Century list, asked his nurses if there was a pool table in the nursing home. Jimmy was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America s Hall of Fame in 1977. His billiard playing days started at the age of 5 and at the age of 17, he defeated Ralph Greenleaf in an exhibition match to become known as the Boy Wonder of the World. Jimmy won world championships in 1936, 1938, 1939 and 1949. In 1967, he won the US Open in a field of 48 players. His records of most balls, games won and fewest innings by a champion still stand (for that size field) in the Jimmy Caras record books. Pastime Tavern by: Kathi Giles
The Pastime Tavern in Oroville, Washington held it s 8-Ball tournament on Saturday, December 15th. The snow seemed to have kept a lot of people from attending, but the 13 of us hard-core pool players who did manage to get there had a blast playing this race to 3, double elimination event. Ernie Wisdom and Ike Williams went undefeated until their match to decide who would play from the hot seat. They battled for that position with Ernie sending Ike to the B side. Kelly Paup was sent to the loser s bracket midway through the tournament, then worked his way through the tough local contenders to make it into the money. Ike and Kelly then played it down to the wire before Kelly won and went on to face Ernie in the final match. Ernie then brought out his bag of tricks to go undefeated into first place. It was a really great tournament and we appreciate the Pastime Tavern sponsoring for this event. December 4, 2001 Bozeman, Montana It was one for the record books when Tina Hansen became the first woman in Montana VNEA history to score a 30-0 match. This feat has only Tina Hansen been accomplished two other times in the 21 years that Montana has been a part of the VNEA, by Rob Millons from Helena and Scott Lee from Bozeman. Tina has had many accomplishments in her pool career. She has been the top woman shooter in both the Open and Women s Leagues and has been on teams going to Las Vegas to play in the VNEA International 8-Ball Team Championships. Tina currently plays for the Cats Paw 1, in the Open Pool Leagues in Bozeman. Tina s name will go into the VNEA International Records and Honors at the back of the league rule book.

2020, A Pool Odyssey Ok, Pat, let s find the pool tables, Art said. There must be some in here somewhere. Looks like we have to head down there, Pat pointed, but let s get a drink first. He no more than uttered the words when a server wafted by and paused before him. Hello, she smiled, a bright silk headscarf tied around her head and a parrot on her shoulder. What can I bring you? How about two blackberry iced teas, Pat said. She pushed a button on her tray, apparently to send the order, and told us she would find us in the wink of an eye. Art looked at Pat dubiously, and followed him down the stairs. The space was huge, and opened to at least two more lower decks. The same ambiance as the above deck was everywhere, and crowds of people were playing games, relaxing on what looked like floating air bubbles, or walking paths made from some kind of roughened, translucent material and lit from within. Oh, my God, look at that! Art cried, clutching Pat s arm and pointing to a man who was disappearing right through a wall. Pat stared in disbelief; and they both stood rooted to the spot until someone took pity on them and told them it was a holograph. They realized then there were holographic people in all kinds of strange getups walking everywhere, even through tables and real people! Whoa, this is incredible! Pat yelped in astonishment as a holographic woman walked right through him. She turned and smiled at him and disappeared. There looked to be about 60 game tables on this deck, all totally different from one another. Not one table was the same size, shape, color or height. The play somewhat resembled pool, but it looked more like Disney World or The China Fantasy Tour. Art and Pat stood there, like strangers in a strange land, when the server floated up with their tea. Pat started to pay her, but she stopped him and said, We ll take care of that when you are ready to leave. You just use this to order and play games and enjoy! She stamped the back of his hand with another invisible ink, the parrot squawked, Polly want a cracker!!! and they both drifted away. A swashbuckling buccaneer wearing a fluorescent eye patch and wielding a laser sword appeared from nowhere and asked the two if they wanted a table. Uh, yeah, Pat said. We came to play some 9-ball. He looked around. Do you have any, uh, regular pool tables? The pirate looked puzzled and said, Nine balls? What s that? He looked at Art s case and asked what was in there. Art said it was a pool cue. The clearly baffled young man suggested they walk around to see what they had to offer; as he didn t know what regular pool tables they were talking about. Pat could see Art was as puzzled as he was. But they agreed they definitely wanted to look around before they left. They walked down the path a ways and stopped at table to watch the play, trying to figure out what the game was. A holograph walked right through the table, causing a slight ripple effect, and the players continued as if nothing had happened. Giving up on that game, they turned to look at the table behind them and discovered the players themselves were holographs. The path split to surround the table, giving people space to stop and watch, and the holographs were talking, explaining how to play a particular game. It was a teaching tool in-house pros of sorts, Pat guessed. You learned any game by standing in the same place as the holograph, pushing a button on the table to activate it, and then following the movements. Pretty cool. They moved on, in awe. Pat asked a player if he could see his stick for a

minute. The guy looked at Pat like he was kind of weird; after all, it was just like everyone else s; but agreeably he handed it over. It was longer than a cue stick and made of some kind of hi-tech clear plastic. It glowed faintly fluorescent and had a button near the grip. Pat pushed the button, and a laser beam shot from the tip. He saw no wooden sticks, and knew it was because of the heavy restrictions on tree harvesting. The days of exotic woods from all over the world were definitely a thing of the past. Art was checking out the balls on the table. None had numbers. All were made of the same tough plastic and some were clear with holographic animals or people inside. Some appeared to be filled with liquid or gel. One thing was the same, though. Chalk was still used to create the friction needed between the tip and the ball. They thanked the guy and moved on. They were surrounded by a gambit of tables on every deck of this place Z tables, X tables, L tables, octagonal tables, hexagonal tables, round tables, two-level tables, moving tables. They saw a black and white zebra-cloth table with matching balls and sticks, and the balls blended in with the table. Two retro hippies were moving in slow motion around a black-lighted tiedyed cloth Deadhead table with psychedelic balls and slowly undulating pockets. A big foot-shaped table with big balls called Sasquatch s Revenge was the focus of some strutting kids who looked like they d just started shaving yesterday. They were happy to bang the balls around as hard and fast as they could. Pat maneuvered Art toward a miniature-pool course, which featured all kinds of traps and obstacles. It seemed to be a favorite with a group of women wearing visors, who were keeping score on neon purple touch pads, while they drank clear glass boots full of some frothy pink delight and screamed with laughter at every missed attempt. A surprising mix of players was at the Ground Force table, featuring blowup mines and caves. Guys and gals both were lying on their stomachs shooting black balls with spring-loaded trigger sticks at target pockets. Every now and then bomb balls would drop from an area above onto the

Mary Hopkin and Linda Carter at the WPBA Nationals from: Linda Carter
Here is the lowdown on what happened to the 2 participants from the ACW, Mary Hopkin and Linda Carter at the WPBA Nationals. First is Mary: Let s see, for my part, I guess I can just blame the good old luck (or lack thereof) of the draw. First there was Karen Corr. I came out strong after she broke and didn t make anything on the break. I ran out, then broke, made the one in the side and ran to the six ball, which I missed. (Can t remember why). Then she took control Mary Hopkin of the match. Any shots I got after that I was kicking at safeties or trying to play safe, but leaving her just enough of the ball to make or play safe. I didn t really get another opportunity until the sixth game, when I played her safe on the two ball and got ball in hand. Then I ran to the seven ball in the side (an easy shot and out from here) and missed the seven ball... AARRRGGHH. At my next opportunity, Karen had me down 81. She played safe on a three ball, but left me enough to see it and I ran out. Then I broke, didn t make anything and she ran out...End of story. In my next match, against Belinda Campos I didn t see a ball for five games - she was breaking good, playing good and playing great safes when she couldn t get out. It was four-zip before I had a decent shot at the table - when she missed a five ball. I ran out and won the next two games, making the score 4-3. In the eighth game, I broke, made the one and we started playing safe on the two. When I got to the table the two was just about five inches in from the side pocket, and I could just see the outside of it. The three was on the bottom rail, buried behind a group of balls. I hit as much of the two ball as I could, nearly making it in the corner pocket, but sending the cue ball four rails down to the bottom rail where the three ball was - behind four balls. The two ball was at the second diamond on opposite side of the table on the side rail. Belinda kicks two rails - coming behind the two ball, hits it good sending it straight down the rail and pocketing it, and the cue ball continues across the table, hitting the opposite rail and coming out behind the three ball. Ouch. That s when you know the

rolls aren t with you. Anyway, she pulls ahead, runs out two more racks, before I get a chance at the table finishing off one rack and running another to make the score 7-5. Then she won the next two games. She played great. Linda Carter That s my story. From Linda: I am really disappointed, although I started out good. Beat Nesli O Hare 9-4. Had her 5-0 at one point. I was playing really well. Then I had to play Allison Fisher. I won the lag, broke and made 4 balls, but the first one was tricky, she missed a 4-9 combo and I ran out. So I was up 1-0. I wanted someone to take my picture! Yeah, Allison is racking for me! I was actually up 3-2, until I remembered who I was, or she remembered who SHE was! She played SO darn good, just flawless. I kicked several times and always made my kicks, but would sell out or she would have to kick back and safe me. I did get a chance in the 10th game to thin cut a frozen 1 on the end rail, but getting on the 2 was tricky. I missed the whole ball! (Inside English). She beat me 9-3. It was an honor to play her. Then I played the winner between Lisa D Atri and Stacy Hurst. Lisa was rooming with Gail Lave and me and she cried after I beat Nesli and Gail beat Dawn Hopkins 9-4! Because she lost to Loree Jon. So we are all comforting her. Well, Lisa beat Stacy, so we had to play each other. I started out strong, 3-0. But I got really tight. This was for my 3rd pro point. I was sort of on tilt, although I was trying to get back in the match. She would leave me ugly and I tried too hard to make the tough shots, and then she had easy pickings. Even when I played safe, she would kick and leave me safe. I lost hill-hill. We had a shot clock and the guy sharked me when I was on the 9 ball twice!!!!!!! That was a 4 game swing. So I lost, but I did play very well in some spots and knocked off a ranked player. Nesli is ranked #21, or was!

VARNER AND PARICA WIN TITLES AT HARD TIMES

Dec. 17, 2001 (Sacramento) Nick Varner took the One-Pocket title and Jose Parica triumphed in 9-Ball at the 3rd annual Hard Times Winter Jamboree. Varner cruised thru the first four rounds in One Pocket defeating Bob Williams, Tony Chohan, Warren Costanzo and Richard Grenier all by identical 3-0 scores! And these are all good One Pocket players! In round five he ran into a vastly improved Santos Sambajon, who tagged a surprising 3-1 loss on Varner. Prior to his match with Nick, Santos had been equally impressive in wins over Mark Haddad 3-0, Jim Davis 3-0, Corey Deuel (forfeit), Billy Palmer 3-1 and Ike Runnels 3-0. Following his loss to Santos, Nick played Parica in the loser s side finals. He played great and won easily 3-1. In the single set finals (race to four) with Santos, Nick started strong and pulled ahead 3-1 and had Santos down 7 to -1 in the next game. Nick needed one ball and Santos needed a doctor. Somehow, some way, Santos battled back and won this game and the next to knot the score at 3 and force a deciding game. The final game was classic One Pocket with great shots exchanged back and forth. Too bad this match wasn t on tape. Maybe next year, we ll tape these matches. He went thru Tommy Soria 9-4, Amar Kang 9-5, Tinsley Johnson 9-2, Trevor Smith 9-3 and George Michaels 9-6 to reach the finals. Meanwhile George fought his way thru match after match, defeating Todd Ruhlen 9-8, Bart Mahoney 9-6, Bryce Avila 9-7 and Tony Chohan 9-8 before losing to Parica. He then beat Chohan again 96 to reach the single set finals (race to eleven). It was more of the same as Jose put a 11-5 thumping on him. The results this year testified to the longevity of pool players, with many of the top finishers being Senior players (over 50). Varner is 53, Parica 51, Michaels 55 and Costanzo 63. Runnels, Davenport, Medina and Dominguez aren t so far from being Seniors either. But the most popular and still competitive Senior is 77 year old Ted Ito. Spokane, Washington On December 8th and 9th, McQ s held their bi-annual B 9-ball tournament. Although we had the field opened up to 64 players, by the time those were filled we still had 8 people hoping to fill a spot if someone dropped out. It was probably our best turn out ever and although I wanted to take in more people, the board does not allow it. As usual, we had some pretty strong B players and to make it to the top 16 proved to be a lot of effort and hard work for the 59 men and 5 women competing in this event. Right out of the gate, Jeremie Whitesell impressed us all with his outstanding run to the drivers seat. His first opponent in the morning was Mike Hibbler, Jeremie pulled out with a 7-4 win and then went on beating Larry Allenfort 7-5, Manuel Mendoza 7-3, Mike Hodgeson 7-3, Rob Hamilton 7-5, and finally taking the drivers seat with a 7-2 victory over Greg Gilliland. Things were not as easy for our tournament winner, Manuel Mendoza. Manuel had an early loss to Jeremie, which made twice as much work for him going through the B-side. Once on the B-side, after his recent loss to Jeremie, Manuel played Kim Sproul and pulled away with a 7-1 victory, won by forfeit to Terry Nordhagen, Scott Gracio 7-4, Lyle Redthunder 7-4, Rob Hamilton 7-4, Mike Gordon 7-1, and finally Greg Gilliland 7-3 for a chance to play Jeremie Whitesell, who cost him his only loss in the tournament. This grudge match proved to be a great one. With Jeremie and Manuel being friends with each other, they would both have to really concentrate on their pool game. The first match was very suspenseful with them head to head through most of the set, but Manuel finally broke loose with a 75 win in the first set. Since Manuel came over from the B-side he would have to beat Jeremie two sets to take first. Although Jeremie put up a good fight, Manuel finally took the first place victory with a 7-4 win in the second set. Manuel took home $650 plus $240 for the side pot. Although Jeremie did not take home first place, he is still welcome to come back to our next B tournament and try his luck again. Manuel on the other hand is now a newly pronounced A player and although we ve enjoyed having him in our B tournaments, he is not allowed to play in them anymore. Congratulations on your win Manuel ! Our next B tournament will be in another 3 months and I am looking forward to seeing all of you that can make it to the next one. We are adding a new challenge at the W.A.M.O.A. tournament. We will have a Tough Enough Come One Come All $100 per player singles tournament. You must play under the name of a W.A.M.O.A. operated pool table account (see ad page 24). The rules are ball in hand and race to 5. 50%, 30% and 20% payout. No added monies, 100% paid back. The Tough Enough tournament and a fun tournament will be played on Friday night, April 5, 2002 at 7:00PM. The standard tournament will be Saturday, April 6, 2002, beginning at 9AM. The place will be once again the Ellensburg Inn, Ellensburg, WA. (see ad page 3) You must qualify at W.A.M.O.A. pool accounts listed in On The Break or call your W.A.M.O.A. operator (see ad page 24). Letters are being sent out to past players. Ask your favorite pool house to have W.A.M.O.A. tables so that you may participate in the playoff. Qualifying tournaments are to be held on your house table for the Washington State Tournament. The three-year-old tournament is modeled after the Montana State Tournament that has been successful for 21 years. This is not a league function but welcomes all league participants in this state tournament. We ask that all participants are Washington State residents and that they qualify on W.A.M.O.A. operated pool tables. There is a women s and men s tournament with A and B slots. The dollar pay outs depend on the numbers of locations participating in the tournaments. In past tournaments the payouts have been in the $3,000 (total) range. Let s get more players for more money! The seemingly unstoppable Karen Corr has done it again! Karen has won every WPBA Classic Tour event in 2001. She was undefeated through the national tournament and defeated Jeanette Lee 7-5 in the finals. Karen had sent Jeanette to the losers side in the semifinal match. From the losers side she Karen Corr then met Allison Fisher. Jeanette handed Allison a crushing 7-0 defeat but could not come back to beat Karen. Throughout her run Karen defeated Mary Hopkin, Nicki Benish, Loree Jon Jones, Ming Ng, Laura Smith and finally Jeanette in the finals. An amazing field of 64 women played their best in this year s nationals. Laura Smith currently ranked #15 on the WPBA tour placed 5th in this event. She had wins over Penny Swann, Jan McWorter, Helena Thornfeldt and Vivian Villarreal before meeting Karen Corr who sent her to the losers side where she was defeated by Allison Fisher. Allison first defeated Darlene Stinson, then Linda Carter and Melissa Herndon before meeting Ewa Laurence who sent her to the losers bracket. From there she defeated Sarah Ellerby, Helena Thornfeldt, Laura Smith, and Ewa Laurence. She finally fell to defeat at the hands of Jeanette Lee and settled for 3rd place. Jeanette s road to the finals included defeats over Gail Boyd, Aileen Pippen, Kelly Oyama and Jennifer Chen. From there she faced Ewa Laurence and sent her to the losers side. She then faced Karen Corr for the first time in the tournament. After Karen sent Jeanette to the losers side she quickly defeated Allison Fisher to again meet Karen in the finals. This was Karen s year to shine and that s exactly what she did. After winning her 6th title, she shed her shoes and danced an Irish jig on top of the Brunswick table where she won her final match.

Note: The following excerpt is a sample reading from Building the Perfect Game by Blackjack David Sapolis. This text is taken from Chapter 5, Back to the Fundamentals . Enjoy! Your Center of Mass exists about an inch or two below and behind your navel. There are several different ways to locate it, but the following is the easiest. You can find your Center of Mass by imagining two line being drawn through your body; one vertical and one horizontal. The lines intersect at your midpoint, or your Center of Mass. Sit in a chair and with your back straight, and your feet placed shoulder width apart and flat upon the floor. As you are sitting in the chair, you should feel most of your weight being pulled (or pressing downward) towards the floor. Shift yourself slightly in the chair and you will feel Your Center of Mass shift as well. With your feet still flat on the floor, slowly rotate your torso in a circular motion. Slowly inch forward to remove your back from the chair. You will feel the point of center mass keeping your torso upright. Remember what this feels like, and where it is located as we will work with this location from here on forward. This is the point in your body that will work directly with your equilibrium. Any off shift of weight, poor balance, or inattention to your center of mass will be translated in your actions at the table. The Center of Mass is the point that you momentarily and consciously attend to in order to ***CENTER*** yourself. When you are ***CENTERED*** it is much easier to achieve Dead Stroke , and here s why: When you are CENTERED, (next issue, Breathing), your muscles will loosen up and breathing will be steady and slightly deeper and slower than usual. This will bring about a feeling of relaxation and balance. Any negative change in your Center of Mass will result in a loss of that feeling (remember that) and you lose your ability to move equally in any direction, while at the same time being balanced. So what does this have to do with your stance??? EVERYTHING!!!! Every error that you have ever committed has been due to a miscalculation or an error in judgment. When you are faced with any shot, physically getting the ball into the pocket starts with the way that you get down into your shooting stance. Your stroke is relying on you to at least balance yourself properly. If you body is not balanced properly, your stroke WILL suffer. Let s look back to our Factors of Stance Mechanics. From top to bottom, All of these need to be in line with your Center of Mass. If they are not, your balanced is flawed. The flaw may be detectable, or non-

detectable, but still there remains a flaw that can be corrected. Try this next exercise while you are preparing to get in your stance. This starts from the top of your head and works its way down to the toes. Exercise: I see the shot before me. I have gone through the mental planning stages as to how I am going to shoot this shot. I will now get down in my stance. a) My ears are in line and directly above my shoulders b) My shoulders are square and even with my Center of Mass c) Though bent at the waist, my spine keeps a straight line d) My bridge shoulder is comfortable, and not supporting my entire weight e) My knees are loose, bent slightly, not locked tightly f) My feet are a comfortable distance apart acting as a base for my entire stance That is my 6 point checklist. Now if I find a deficiency, I DO NOT make adjustments while down in my stance. I stand up straight and begin my preshot routine all over again. Why is this? Because I am not down there to adjust my stance. I am down there to shoot the shot. Anything that distracts me from shooting the shot is dealt with immediately and appropriately. As you can see, it is vital to a proper stance. You must be rock solid, yet comfortable. While you are down in your stance, I should not be able to push you off balance. You should be locked in your stance, not crouched or slumped over the table lazily. Remember that RELAXED does mean LAZY! A lazy, weak stance is mainly caused by a lack of confidence. The shoulders droop, the neck tilts, the head drops down in discouragement. The spine hunches over and becomes tense, as do the shoulders, which are the base for you shooting and your bridge arm. (If your shoulders are tense, so is your shooting arm). We eventually bunch ourselves in a ball like a bundle of nerves. Having a strong, solid stance will enable you to master Centering techniques much more easily. Master the centering techniques that I will show you can and will enable you to achieve Dead Stroke much more easily and with amazing frequency. The 34th All Japan Championships was won this year by Corey Deuel after an 11-10 final match against Mika Immonen. Corey never lost a match in this single elimination, race to 11 format. First to be defeated by Deuel was Rodolfo Luat 11-6, then Peter F Nielsen 116, Fong-pang Chao 11-10, Kunfang Lee 11-0 and finally Mika Immonen. situations? Plan your out, then Read Problem: How to make the 1ball. Commentary: The 1-ball can be cut into pocket N . The problem with this shot is that the 1-ball has to be cut so thin that there is a danger of missing it all together. To help insure against a foul, a little right english should be used. This way, if the shot is cut too thin, the cue ball will rebound off the rail and into the object ball thus avoiding a foul. The 1-ball can also be banked into pocket W . To avoid a double kiss, the 1-ball will have to be cut a few extra degrees (to the right) and right english put on the cue ball (to decrease the cut angle). The target pocket will play bigger than it is because the 5-ball is acting as a funnel. Problem: There are two clusters that are preventing an easy run. Commentary: The 5-7 cluster can be broken up by making the 2-ball carom off the 7-ball as it goes into the corner pocket. But there is a better way of handling this situation. Shoot the 2-ball cleanly into the pocket and leave the 5-7 cluster undisturbed. Shoot the 3-ball and get shape such that the 4-ball can be shot directly into the 9-ball. If everything goes well the 9ball will carom off the 8-ball and go into pocket N. If the 9-ball is missed, your opponent will have to contend with the 5-7 cluster. Northwest Women s Pool Association [NWPA] is Founded as ACW Disbands
Several weeks ago, the ACW notified playing members of efforts underway to restructure the organization. This included much due diligence by the board in comparing their short and long term goals and business projections against their current state of affairs. After much consideration, the board felt that the strong synergy of the restructured board, as well as their fresh and exciting new business plan, warranted a cosmetic makeover for the organization. As such, it was unanimously voted a sound business choice that a new, women s pool organization be created and the ACW disbanded. The result is the newly incorporated, non-profit organization named the NORTHWEST WOMEN S POOL ASSOCIATION (NWPA); a WPBA affiliated regional tour. In addition, the NWPA is pleased to announce the appointment of the following new board members who bring a considerable level of knowledge, talent and commitment to the organization. Biographies of all board members will be posted soon on the NWPA s new website, WWW.NWPATOUR.COM, currently under construction: Production Coordinator -Julie Valdez, Tournament Coordinator/Player Advocate of Oregon State - Brad Gowin, and Board Assistant - Kim Sijer. A meeting of the full board was held December 18, 2001 to discuss numerous corporate related items that included their business plan, website strategy, corporate branding, and 2002 Tour Schedule. The NWPA schedule for next season will include six 9-ball tournaments (two of which will be WPBA qualifiers), one 8-ball tournament
geared toward amateur players, and one pool exhibition. The NWPA will consider adding a second 8-ball event and other exhibitions to their schedule, based on feedback from players. Following is the NWPA 2002 Schedule: January 26-27: 9-ball, B Class PJ Pockets; Federal Way, WA April 12-14: 9-ball, B Class - Q Street Billiards; Springfield, OR (WPBA QUALIFIER) June 22-23: 9-ball, B Class Shotze s; Everett, WA July: 8-ball, C Class - TBD [Washington] August: 9-ball, B Class - TBD [Oregon] September: Pool Exhibition October: 9-ball, B Class - TBD [Oregon] November: 9-ball, B Class - TBD [Washington] The NWPA will be offering a season membership at a fee of $55.00, which can be paid prior to or at the player s first NWPA event. Tournament entry fees will be $45.00 and must be received to the NWPA Treasury Office no later than 10 days prior an event; otherwise, players will be assessed a $25 late fee. In addition, players wishing to participate in NWPA events, without becoming a member, may do so by paying an extra $20.00 nonmember fee per event. Most of us give praise to individuals that have passed away, or that has accomplished some great individual feat. My New Year s resolution is to make sure everyone that I care about knows it and understands how important they are to me. Being a pool player, many pool players have become close friends and mentors to me. As a writer for this great publication, I would like to pull some weight and thank some people who have made the game and my life a little sweeter. I would like to thank Bradley Gowin, for always helping me in my troubles and, even though I m his worst student of all time, I value all of his help, in pool and in life. I was tempted to make this short and tell you all just to call me. It sounded great at first but you would all be wondering what kind of an arrogant fool is this guy . Education can only help us all and maybe keep you from calling Uncle Fred, who used to reupholster furniture, to recover your table. A pool table is really not the same as a piece of furniture. Hopefully you are not trying to get the right english when you sit on your sofa. Many establishments have invested allot of time and money to earn a good reputation with their billiards playing customers. To keep that reputation you need to invest in the quality of your table and it s maintenance. There are quite a few individuals offering recovery and maintenance services but not all of them understand exactly what it takes to keep your table in professional playing condition. While a seasoned player may be able to see and compensate for the defects in a poorly maintained table, a table that is cleaned, groomed and has consistency of play will keep your pool players happy and they in turn will keep the cash box full.
Railing About Rails...
OK, this is where I really get my dander up. Bad rails will create more problems than just about anything. They are the trickiest part of the table to maintain and therefore are the place where more shortcuts are taken. Quiz your recovery service about how they handle rails before you let them touch your table. When someone recovers your table, NEVER allow them to switch out your rails. This might sound odd but it happens on many tables, especially Valley and Dynamo brands due to their popularity and universal nature. Sometimes a recovery service will have a stock of rails at their shop, from a previous job, already recovered. They simply switch them out at your place of business using yours for the next guy. This would be fine if you knew that the rail was in good condition to begin with. It saves time and in the short run may save you money but your customers will notice immediately if you ve gotten a bad set. One bad league night can shoot down your reputation. I have seen a new table with 30 year old rails. Next time you have your table recovered, check to make sure that the rubber is matching, look for a brand name on the rubber. If you have a newer table you should not have mismatched, crystallized, stapled out rails. Another thing to look for is the type of cloth you are using. If you have chosen a rubber-backed cloth, the rubber must be peeled off to recover the rails. This leaves a residue of glue on the back, which melts the rubber after time causing it to get gummy and then crystallize. Finally, loose rubber on the rail block. This is often caused by people sitting on the table or using the rail to pull themselves up from a crouch position after racking the balls. However, a healthy set of rails should handle this abuse fine if they have been installed properly. November 17th and 18th, a sunny weekend saw 21 players meeting at McCorry s for 2 days of 9-ball. Saturday the play was fast and furious with everyone wanting to be included in the 8 money winners to return Sunday. Saturday the play was race to 7 and Sunday matches were race to 9 with the final match a double elimination match. Larry Nelson played very well on Saturday, putting many players in the loser bracket, including James Davee. Sixteen teams met at McCorry s the weekend of December 1st and 2nd, to find out who was better at playing Scotch Doubles in a round robin format. They started playing Saturday at 10 am and by late Sunday afternoon, the dust was starting to settle and winners started to emerge. 1st $450 James Davee/Frank Anthony 2nd $270 Kris Iverson/Will Totten 3rd $130 Miquel Morfin/Pete Phillipe 4th $110 Kerry Prosser/Steve Halloway 5th $ 90 Larry Nelson/Keith Johnson 6th $ 70 Marian Harrison/Jon Viebrock Kris & Will and Miquel & Pat had to play an extra set of games to determine exactly who was going to finish in 2nd place. It took a race to 3 before it was decided that Kris & Will wanted 2nd place 5th and 6th places also took a race to 3 to determine that final placing and Larry & Keith and Marian & Jon fought a good match of pool before a final winner was decided. I want to thank all the players for a fun weekend and a lot of excellent pool playing.

2020, A Pool Odyssey table and interfere with shots. If you were still able to pocket your ball, you earned points. One table had the U.S. flag on it, with 52 starsand-stripes, and 52 balls, representing each state. Another had pictures of all 59 presidents on it, and the players had to land on each president in order. The holographs seemed to like that one. One table had objects of all shapes that slid across a smooth surface, and were sucked into matching holes if you could get it across at the right moment. Right next to that was a table shaped like a UFO. It looked like the object of the game was to bank a ball off the curved rail, come down a level, and pocket the ball in a hole in the middle of the table, which opened and shut at intervals. Once all the balls were pocketed, new balls came out little trap doors along the outer edge of the table, opening and closing so quickly they looked like they d appeared from nowhere. A table further on down the lighted path had air coming through the snow-white cloth. It elevated the white balls so no friction with the table was possible and was called Snowver Pool. How the balls managed to stay in the playing area, Pat couldn t begin to imagine. At another table a woman called out twelve numbers out loud and next thing you knew there were 12 balls with those numbers, which she had to shoot in the order she called them. At the same time, a voice-activated phone within the table dialed the number she d said, and you could hear her chattering aloud to someone she knew while she played. Art drew Pat down to the next below deck. There was a big crowd and a lot of noise around one table. Above it was a Vegas-like sign flashing, Treasure of Gold! What s the deal here? Art shouted to a couple of guys standing in the crowd. If he shoots that indigo ball in the right pocket at the right time he ll win $3,000, one of them shouted back. I ve seen people win $100,000 jackpots. Those other colored balls are worth different prizes at different times. It s pretty

complicated, but this guy might get it. His reflexes are really good! Art was beginning to look a little dazed and ready to sit down. Pat saw a couple of vacant air bubbles and steered him in that direction. They were every bit as comfortable as they looked. They could push themselves around with their feet, like in a rolling chair, but these were actually floating. There was a little depression to hold drinks and things, and as Pat set his frosted glass of tea in it, he wondered briefly how he could sneak one of these out the door with him and take it home. They looked around diligently. Not a four and a half by nine or three and a half by seven with green felt in the place. Pat saw some guy stare into a sensor device and say something, and the balls on the table next to it released. Must be the retina recognition program, the debit card that you never left home without. Pat guessed if you were a regular you could sign up for that, instead of getting stamped. Each game or drink was recorded and later billed. It was an application of security technology. Apparently games were priced differently, some by time and others by the game. He looked up. If there were security cameras, they were well hidden. He noticed the pathway from above could be seen from below, and watched shadowy shoe prints moving back and forth. Two holographs who looked like Blackbeard and Errol Flynn were in a heated sword fight in the air nearby. Art edged his bubble closer to a five-sided table, where five balls sat in the middle, surrounded by five extra-wide pockets. A flashing neon sign above the table announced the game as Scatterblaster. Apparently the object was to pocket all five balls by smashing them in as fast as possible a speed game. Hey, Pat! he exclaimed, peering more closely at the players. See those two guys? Isn t that Steve and Q? Part III (next issue): Pat and Art run into old friends at Captain Hook s Pool Emporium.
