If this room could talk it would describe: The symphony of scents and sounds in this humble, yet vibrant kitchen — where pots, pans, and hearts overflow with abundance. A place where children are laughing freely, eyes sparkling with renewed light, as a widow, smiling once again, savors the sweetness of the moment. If walls could talk they’d describe a family, decked in dignity, eagerly anticipating the Shabbos Queen.

YOUR 12 YEAR OLD CAN’T READ THIS AD. GIVE US FIVE DAYS AND WE’LL CHANGE THAT

At Mind Orientation, a licensed Davis Dyslexia® center, we’re not afraid of dyslexia. Because we know how to treat it. Our experience with struggling readers has taught us that dyslexia won’t respond to phonic-based reading remediation. In a five-day intensive program, your child will learn the Davis® method, an internationally recognized approach to reading that will empower her to beat dyslexia-triggering stimuli — and finally master literacy. In our transformative program, she’ll become a fluent and confident reader in less time than it takes for the weekend to come around again.

SCHEDULE AN EVALUATION AND EXPERIENCE THE DAVIS DIFFERENCE.

INTERESTING AND REFRESHING

(Re: Creature Encroachment, Issue 217) Thank you for the article about critter invasions. I’ve been wondering for a while about those Chinese spotted lantern bugs and where they come from. (And also how to get rid of them — anyone know?) But most of all, I especially appreciate that your articles are not heavy, emotional, and full of negative, frightening or depressing topics. I can read it with my coffee and come away refreshed. Thanks for the weekly “excursions”! A Reader

IT’S NOT SAFE

(Re: Why We Go Into Your House, Inbox, Issue 216) It is not permissible to go into a house that is under construction for many reasons. One reason is simply that it’s often not safe. My friend’s daughter went into her own house when it was under construction and accidentally fell two flights down the elevator shaft. She was in a body cast for a very long time. Someone came into my house without permission when it was under construction and walked on the hardwood floor that had just been scraped and finished — and was not quite dry. The marks will remain there until I scrape again. It’s been three years already, and it still bothers me. My new home was damaged by someone who had no right to be there! Regarding the letter-writer who complained that her new neighbors did not invite everyone in to see her house, I think it’s nice to invite neighbors, but when you come, please respect my privacy. I don’t necessarily welcome guests into every room. Thank you, D.L. W E A T H E R

FROM THE MOUTHS OF CHILDREN

(Re: Why We Go Into Your House, Inbox, Issue 216) The letter “Why We Go Into Your House” reminded me of my kindergarten student, who, when asked why she took a toy away from her classmate, responded, “Because she didn’t want to give it to me.” Let’s use our seichel hayashar to make mature, correct decisions in life. Thank you, Anonymous

EXCUSES DON’T MAKE IT RIGHT

(Re: Why We Go Into Your House, Inbox, Issue 216) With all due respect to N.P., according to the Torah, one is not permitted to do aveiros even if they think they have a good excuse. Entering someone else’s private home without permission, even if it still under construction, is probably geneivah. Your excuse — that the owners might not let all the neighbors visit after they move in — doesn’t make it right! (Besides, curiosity is not really a very nice or Jewish middah.) Thanks, The Boro Park View, for allowing us to voice our point of view. A Local Homeowner

NO MORE NITS

(Re: I Could Write a Book About… Nitpicking, Issue 215) To all the mothers who can write books or even encyclopedias about combing their kids for nits, I would like to share with you my final chapter and happy ending to our nitpicking saga. This tip saved me (I wish I could remember who told it to me): Spray the hair nightly with isopropyl alcohol. It works wonders in keeping the lice away. Hatzlacha, H.L. Lezer

PARSHAS BO To Trust and Believe

Y. Levenstein

There is a well-known Ramban at the end of Parshas Bo that contains invaluable yesodos of emunah for us to learn. One of the many foundations is the fact that “since Hakadosh Baruch Hu will not perform miracles in every generation, before the eyes of every evil or heretic person, we are instructed to make a constant remembrance to what our eyes have seen, and we’ll repeat it to our children, and they to their children, and so on…” The legendary Mashgiach of Ponovezh, Rav Yechezkel Levenstein, zt”l, once said, “It would be worth coming to this world just to become familiar with these words of the Ramban!” We are told to write about the

nissim of Yetzias Mitzrayim, of all the makkos and the wonders, and place it in a mezuzah at our doorposts. We are also commanded to speak about it every morning and every evening in Krias Shema. We also perform many other mitzvos with a reference to Yetzias Mitzrayim. The reason for this is so that in every generation, the miracles will not be forgotten, leaving no place for anyone to deny their emunah in Hashem. The following story drives home the Ramban’s point.

WHEREVER RAV YISRAEL SALANTER, ZT”L, went, he roused Yidden to improve their standards of Torah and mitzvos. He toiled energetically to strengthen Yiddishkeit, all with his signature style as the legendary father of the mussar movement. On one trip, Rav Yisrael visited a town he had been to before, and he went to visit the host at whose home he had previously stayed. Rav Yisrael knew him to be an upstanding individual, an ehrliche Yid with good moral standing. How surprised he was to notice that things were not the same; it seemed the man’s yiras Shamayim had weakened. “What happened?” Rav Yisrael inquired. “Something about you has changed.” His host replied, “You see, Rebbi, a while ago, I hosted a guest who turned out to be a kofer, a classic heretic. In my conversations with him, he mocked halachah and scorned the concept of sechar v’onesh — reward and punishment. We argued a bit, and he wanted to prove his point. He brought a piece of treif meat and announced his challenge. ‘If indeed reward and punishment exists,’ he declared, ‘I shall choke on this meat!’ But he ate the meat and did not choke. “What should I say? Since that terrible incident,” the host admitted, “my emunah weakened. I watched a crude man deny the Torah and mitzvos and win his challenge while publicly eating nonkosher meat – and it changed something inside of me. Thoughts of kefirah began to take wings in

Rav Yechezkel Levenstein once said, “It would be worth coming to this world just to become familiar with these words of the Ramban!”

Does Hakadosh Baruch Hu have to prove His existence to any fool who wants to question it?

my mind, and somehow managed to cool the yiras Shamayim that used to burn in my heart.” Rav Yisrael listened intently. He did not respond, as was his approach. He knew that if he were to answer a person who wasn’t looking for answers, his words would fall on deaf ears. Instead, he waited for the right opportunity to respond. It didn’t take long for that moment to arrive. Several hours later, the host’s daughter arrived home. She proudly ran to show her father a certificate she had been awarded that day. In bold letters, the certificate praised the girl’s singing talent. She had successfully passed a choir course, and was officially recognized as a talented singer. “I don’t believe the certificate,” Rav Yisrael said. Turning to the girl, he added, “Let’s see if you actually know how to sing nicely.” The host was surprised. “It isn’t modest for a girl to sing before a strange man, especially someone as great as the rav! Besides, that is exactly why she has the certificate! The certificate validates that she succeeded in this capacity, so she shouldn’t need to prove herself to anyone who might be wondering.” This was exactly the response Rav Yisrael had hoped to hear. “Listen to what you are saying,” he replied. “You’re arguing that the certificate proves her abilities, and that is true. But you must admit that your statement applies to your earlier argument as well. “In Mitzrayim, Hakadosh Baruch Hu performed amazing nissim, in order to show that there is a Manhig in this world, and that everything is in His hands. There, everyone saw the precise hashgachah pratis that governs the world, and they all saw with their own eyes the truth that sechar v’onesh exists. “We even have a ‘certificate’ proving this — the Torah! At Har Sinai, we were given our ‘diploma,’ and in it the details of the Makkos and Yetzias Mitzrayim are recorded at length, proving Hashem’s supreme management of the world. “Now, tell me,” Rav Yisrael concluded, “Does Hakadosh Baruch Hu have to prove His existence to any fool who wants to question it by a show of miracles that changes nature? He already proved it to us in Mitzrayim! It’s all written explicitly in the Torah, and anyone who seeks the truth can confirm it through our eternal certificate — the Torah Hakedoshah! “There’s no need for additional demonstrations in every generation for every individual,” Rav Yisrael Salanter concluded. Just as the Rambam says…

Giving Kallahs the Right to Choose

HOW APSTONE REVOLUTIONIZED THE ORIGINAL CHASUNAH PACKAGE INTO AN EXCLUSIVE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

There’s no singular word that can describe kallah shopping. Exciting, yes. Hectic, true. Stressful, sometimes. Apstone is here to add another: pleasant. They’re taking away the rollercoaster and bringing an experience that’s simple and effortless. And the way it’s done is precisely how today’s kallah wants it. We went down to the Apstone showroom to talk about the changes in the wedding industry and how Apstone is being a harbinger of innovation. A REVOLUTION IN WEDDING SHOPPING Twenty years ago, a new idea shifted the landscape of the wedding shopping industry: chasuna malls. Instead of running around to the individual stores that sell furniture, jewelry, silver, houseware, linen stores and more, kallahs and their mothers headed to an inclusive shopping experience to purchase everything needed to set up a new home. The idea was marvelous and the community adapted to the concept fast. Kallahs and their mothers appreciated the beautiful showrooms as they discussed, debated, and selected the very best for the new home. With weddings costing thousands of dollars, the malls’ package deals made things easier by including everything a new home needed at one reduced price.

For example, kallahs no longer want every piece of furniture in a package, preferring less furniture and more breathing space to set a more practical and stylish tone. Similarly, service for eight is excessive for a new couple and the right time to buy china is many years later; a home phone isn’t needed anymore by most couples – they use cellphones exclusively. Apstone realized that change, once more, must be made.

A BRAND NEW STYLE Enter Apstone Living Styles, the advent of customizable packages. Every product in the showroom has two prices: one when purchased on its own, and the other discounted package price. With this novel concept, kallahs hand select the pieces they want to include in their package and receive it all at a significantly discounted price.

PERSONALIZATION OVER PACKAGES

APSTONE: ADVANTAGE OF THE ORIGINAL

Change happened slowly. Needs shifted, styles evolved. Rather than being locked into a wedding package, kallahs wanted to make personalized decisions. Consequently, mechutanim no longer wanted the full package, being that they didn’t want to be constrained to purchase all it included.

It’s only fitting that Apstone is the catalyst for this idea: the brand is a pioneer in the chasuna mall industry. For 20 years, they’ve helped kallahs outfit homes with quality home goods that are practical and work for a Yiddishe home. They have met every sort of client and know what a Yiddishe home needs, and what a kallah needs, even before she does. The

Moving is a big step, whether it’s a couple that’s married for five years or fifteen. Costs add up quickly. Apstone has become the address for fully furnishing new homes at prices that provide monetary relief. With Apstone Living Styles, new homeowners can select the pieces they need at better prices than they would find anywhere else. In addition to purchasing furniture, they can also browse the showrooms and find linen and tablecloths to match the furniture, as well as fill in odds and ends and accessories to beautify their new home. As we strolled through the Apstone showroom to see it firsthand, the team gave us a peek into their everyday world of building homes while sharing their expertise in the industry.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT CUSTOM PACKAGES. Apstone: It’s pretty simple: Kallahs and new homeowners can select the pieces they want without being stuck with what they don’t. No armoire, no problem. Another linen set, go for it. One curio instead of two, sure. They buy and pay only for what they need. Nothing is extra and everything is exactly what they want.

WHY DO YOU THINK KALLAHS DON’T WANT THE RESTRICTIONS OF PACKAGES ANYMORE? Apstone: Styles are different now; there is more room for pieces that suit your taste. Every kallah is different and every apartment is different. There’s no reason to be stuck in a set package when you can have the freedom to choose. And

in the long run, kallahs are happier with what they purchased, because it’s exactly what they chose.

WHY SHOULDN’T KALLAHS GO TO A SEPARATE LINEN STORE, JEWELRY STORE, ETC?

a dish set; these are the essence of the client’s personality. It’s the vibe they choose to surround themselves with. For example, a traditional style will be evident all across the house, from paint colors to linen and everything in between. We categorized our options into these distinctive styles to make it easier for our varied clientele to select the pieces that reflect who they are.

Apstone: Firstly, we’ve been in the industry for a long time CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE and we know what the heimishe customer wants. We have countless conversations with kallahs and new homeowners FURNITURE PIECES YOU CARRY? every day and we understand their mindset and their wants Apstone: We make sure that every piece in our showroom and needs. And finally, exclusivity. We have amazing pieces that you won’t find anywhere else. ADVERTISE A NEW CONCEPT OF “LIVING STYLES.” HOW WAS THIS CONCEPT CREATED?

Apstone: When we analyzed the customers’ shopping habits throughout the years, we’ve seen that most selections and decisions lean towards one the following five living styles: traditional, modern, transitional, contemporary, and minimalist. These styles are more than a table or

WHAT CONSIDERATIONS GO INTO DESIGNING FURNITURE FOR THE FRUM COMMUNITY? We put a lot of thought into practicality. When designing the finishes, we look at materials that can withstand the test of time. We only create pieces that will perform perfectly, and for a long time. Another thing we think about is helping our customers maximize their space, especially with city apartments often being small. To that end, we design bedroom furniture with plenty of height under each piece to leave room for storage space. It’s really about the little things: we make sure drawer glides extend fully, we make sure that all furniture is able to be gently cleaned without ruining the finish, we make sure china closets are fully sealed so that silver shouldn’t tarnish. A ton of thought goes into every detail.

MV: WHAT STYLES AND TRENDS DO YOU FOLLOW IN YOUR DESIGNS? We look at what’s trending internationally and within the community. For bedrooms these days, that means warm finishes and feels in creams and taupes, and in the dining room, modern and sleek looks with curves and high gloss. We focus a lot on customer feedback and implementing improvements as per their needs.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE GENRE TO SKETCH AND DESIGN? I enjoy creating new concepts and pieces that our community will love. Right now, I’m loving the trending color palettes with warm tones and textures. Our customers love it too; we’re hearing amazing feedback on our new bedroom line, the Emerald Collection. It’s amazing to create pieces that others will enjoy for years to come.

Good News for Boro Park as Mayor Walks Back Budget Cuts

Manhattan Highways May Be the Next MTA Cash Cow

Citing $2 billion in reduced migrant spending, Mayor Eric Adams is funneling money into the city’s police and fire departments, much to the relief of local residents. Adams pledged on January 10 to restore one of the five 600-member police academy classes that he eliminated in December. Twenty engine companies, including Boro Park’s Engine 247, will have what is known as their “fifth firefighter” position reinstated. The cuts were among several that were made to bridge a $7 billion budget gap, with the mayor blaming the shortfall on the ongoing migrant crisis and the end of COVID relief funds, among other factors. “Public safety is the prerequisite to prosperity, and so everything we do is to ensure New York City remains the safest big city in America,” said Adams. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phillip Banks III credited the mayor for his “sound fiscal management and innovative ideas” that made it possible to shore up the ranks of the NYPD and the FDNY. A day later, Adams was back with more good news, announcing that 9,000 trash baskets that were scheduled for removal would remain on city streets. That plan dovetails with the mayor’s self-proclaimed “War on Rats” and will give the Department of Sanitation the ability to continue introducing a futuristic litter basket whose design will prevent the dumping of large items, such as microwaves, and will also deter rodents. While city libraries will remain closed as per the mayor’s fall announcement, Adams allocated funding to two programs that will provide park-related jobs and training for thousands of low-income New Yorkers. The mayor noted that the city still has a long way to go towards fiscal solvency. “While we can celebrate this good news today, we still have a massive budget gap to fill in the next year and need more support from our state and federal partners going forward,” said Adams.

Toll cameras being installed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Manhattan’s north-south highways as part of its congestion pricing plan have some people wondering if the agency is eyeing the roadways as a possible revenue stream. The MTA has begun putting up cameras on both the FDR Drive and the West Side Highway to track vehicles entering the congestion zone south of 60th Street. While state law currently exempts drivers on both roadways from congestion pricing tolls, concerned New Yorkers are worried that the MTA is laying the groundwork for future attempts to target drivers. “Wanna bet that after a year, the MTA will go to the state legislature and say they need more money and the best way to get it is to put the congestion pricing toll on the FDR Drive and the West Side Highway?” observed one source quoted in the New York Post. “You can hear the MTA bureaucrats saying that it’ll be easy because ‘we already have the equipment in place. As soon as you give us the green light, the bucks will just start flowing in.’” It’s unclear if the decision to install sensors on a pedestrian

walkway that spans the FDR Drive at East 25th Street was made by the city or state departments of transportation or the MTA. While some might dismiss those concerns as farfetched, Staten Island Councilman Joe Borelli sees them as a real possibility. “The legislature expanded speed cameras in the city when it was still a pilot program,” said Borelli. “The legislature can expand the congestion toll to wherever they want.”

New Lighting Has Brooklyn Bridge Shining Brightly Forty years after it was last illuminated, the Brooklyn Bridge again glows brightly against the night sky, part of a $300 million project to restore the iconic span to its former glory. The 140-year-old Brooklyn Bridge is in the midst of a four-year restoration project that is expected to be completed this year. In addition to scouring decades of dirt from the span’s many stones, the bridge was outfitted with a $2.4 million LED lighting system, with 56 new bulbs spotlighting the span’s towers, along with 166 cable-mounted lights that were converted to LED bulbs in 2021. “Everyone loves a good ‘glow up,’ and thanks to our new energy-efficient LED lighting system, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge will shine brightly for all New Yorkers to enjoy,” said New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. The new lighting, unveiled on January 11, is expected to showcase the bridge’s beauty for decades. Built out of limestone, granite, brick and steel, the Brooklyn Bridge was the world’s longest suspension bridge when it first opened in 1883. In its earliest days, walkers, horse riders, horse-drawn carriages and farm animals all paid tolls to cross the 6,016-foot-long bridge, which connected the city of Brooklyn with Manhattan. It wasn’t until sixteen years later that Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island all officially joined Manhattan and the Bronx into the consolidated New York City that we know today.

CHAPTER 40 In class, Fraidy comes to Chevi’s defense. Mr. Gabioff offers Riva a raise, just as she contemplates leaving.

all it reckless, call it a bad habit, but when night fell and she was done straightening up the house, Riva never hurried to bed. Instead, she savored the peace and quiet. “After a whole day of being around people, I need some time to be with just me,” she would tell her mother, who hadn’t given up fighting the go-to-sleep-already battle from when Riva was a little kid. “I feel like my body needs it even more than it needs sleep. It preserves my mental health.” Sometimes she regretted it in the morning, when she couldn’t drag herself out of bed, but she’d do it again the next night; she couldn’t resist. “Also, I’m too tired to go to sleep,” she’d admit to Yaakov wryly. Now, as she set out clothing for the kids for the next morning, the

quiet didn’t offer the magic it usually did. Being alone with herself, there was nowhere for her thoughts to escape, and Mr. Gabioff’s astonishing words pervaded her mind. Fifteen percent increase. Without even asking. “It’s a ploy,” Yaakov had told her when she’d called him up in shock as soon as she left the office. “It’s a test to see if you really have the courage to leave — if you’re really ready to do it, or if you’ll jump at the first excuse not to act on your decision.” He was one hundred percent right. Not only that — he was the one who was going to have to deal with the fallout if she gave up the job, and yet he still pushed her to do so. “Things will fall into place,” he assured her. “It’s probably going to take a little time to adjust, to figure things out. But we can’t sit

around and wait for the perfect time to leave. It never feels like a perfect time to give up a steady income, and if it feels even harder now, I’m telling you, it’s your conscience.” But she did not have the energy to deal with her conscience, and maybe it was better to just go to sleep. Better not to think, not to decide, to just… Just forget everything. She’d been sure that her racing thoughts wouldn’t allow her to fall asleep, but as her head sank into her pillow, her eyelids immediately grew heavy, and within minutes, she was drifting off. But then, in that muddled state between slurred thoughts and deep slumber, she was jolted awake by the peal of the doorbell. Who-what-aaaah. She jerked awake in a cold sweat. Yaakov was sleeping peacefully. Her instinct was to wake him, but she waited, her heart palpitating, listening for further sounds. The doorbell didn’t ring again, and the house was pin-drop silent. It couldn’t have been a dream, the sound had been very real. She again considered waking Yaakov, but then she got out of bed and slipped on a robe. In the dining room, she peeked out of the window, down at the street below. She made out a figure walking out of the building — it looked like a young bochur — and heading down the street. Weird. She went to the door and opened it a crack. There were no prowlers around, but a package lay on the floor. She pulled it inside, quickly locked the door, and inspected it. It was addressed to Fraidy. In huge print, a sticker screamed, WE’RE COUNTING THE MINUTES!!!!! Oh, goodness. Camp. Seriously?! Eleven-thirty at night? Machne Reyim, does this mean you rock? She shook the bubble mailer, trying to figure out what it contained. Some grand welcome prize, she guessed. Day camps became more and more over-the-top every summer. Oh, well. Fraidy would be excited, but the late-night delivery had not been amusing. She released the captive air from her lungs.

Riva took the package to her daughter’s room. Fraidy would find her surprise on her bed in the morning. But as she put the package down, she hesitated. She observed Fraidy’s small frame, balled up under her blanket, and an uneasiness wound around her throat. Maybe… maybe this was their chance. Machla had asked her about this once — about the option of separating Fraidy and Chevi — and they thought the summer would be a good opportunity. The conversation never came up again, but now, Mr. Gabioff’s low voice rumbled in her ears. I got the impression that you weren’t satisfied with your last raise. The almost… brutal… kindness. And the only thing she could think was, Get away. Get far, far away. She wasn’t sure if it was possible at all — it was probably too late to get into any other camp — but it was her duty to try. It didn’t mean that Fraidy had lost. It meant that she’d be strong enough to acknowledge that, no matter who was right or wrong, for her, pulling away and disengaging was the only way forward. Riva stroked Fraidy’s hair, taking in her sweet face in the dim glow of the night lamp. Then she picked up the bubble mailer and walked out of the room. *****

Unbelievable, how months and months had passed with nary a wire pulled into place, and suddenly, in two weeks, an entire house was born. Well, almost, anyway. As Lani took in the scene from the doorway, holding Shifra in her arms, what she saw resembled a cross between a lumberyard and a landfill rather than a livable house. And now, at eight o’clock in the morning, it looked and smelled like a breakfast joint, too. But, yes, the progress was astounding. They were up to painting and scraping! She picked her way through the house. There were workers clustered in every room, intently bent over their Styrofoam breakfast trays. Andy was making his rounds, firing instructions at everyone. He looked like a flustered sergeant preparing 94

his troops for battle. His “troops,” however — although nodding along and saying, “Si, si” — seemed more interested in their food than in their day’s tasks. Then Andy spied Lani. Planting his foot on a bucket of plaster, he greeted her with an ultimatum. “If you don’t give me all of the paint colors today, missus, we’re not getting the house done before I leave. You can forget about it, it’s not happening.” Lani bit back a smirk. He used this threat five times a day, on everyone, and it was losing its effect. Still, it was wonderful to see the contractor so anxious about meeting their deadline. She promised him she’d give him the list. “I’m going out to work now for a few hours,” she said, “but I’ll finalize all the colors right after.” The only issue was that she now actually had to finalize those colors. And that finalization had somehow turned into a crippling challenge. Batsheva had given her basic direction, but the designer refused to assert her opinions on Lani. “You have to connect with those colors,” she claimed. “I’ll back up your choices, but you need to do the choosing.” OC18 or OC19, and what percentage? How could Lani know what would ultimately give her dining room that effect of modern with a touch of warmth? And which color would reflect better in sunlight? She took her paint color fan deck along to her mother’s house, hoping to coerce her mother into deciding for her. When Mrs. Miller saw the swatch book, she burst out laughing. “You’re not asking me about paint colors, Lani, are you? Today, they just spill white-out all over the house. I must be colorblind when it comes to whites. But let me help you with your breakfasts, I’m not going out today.” Lani put the paint colors out of her mind as she and her mother worked on eight breakfast packages. By ten o’clock, all the deliveries were out. “Whoa, thanks so much, Ma. You literally made this happen in half the time.” “If I get a kimpeturin breakfast in exchange, it’s a pretty good deal.” Lani sat down to eat with her

guy? My Shaindy used someone extremely well-priced.” Lani rubbed the color deck in her hand agitatedly. “No, we scheduled that already.” She didn’t even tack on a “but thanks,” because she didn’t feel thankful and wasn’t going to pretend she did. “Oh, okay, whenever you need, you have my number…” She cackled at what she probably thought was a hilarious joke. And then she went on, clearly at ease with blocking Lani’s entrance to her own house. “Did you hear any update about Maddie? When is she coming back to work?”

“I don’t know.” “I guess I’ll ask Riva.” Then she noticed what Lani was holding. “Hey, are you choosing paint colors? It’s such a headache. You should really talk to my Shaindy. She was soooo busy with that.” She didn’t need Shaindy Weiser’s help, thank you. But it suddenly occurred to her; maybe she could ask… Riva? *****

mother. “Savor it, Ma, because it won’t be for much longer,” she said happily. “I mean, you’re always welcome over to my new house for breakfast — or to help.” She winked. “Sure, sure.” Lani stayed to do her baking for the next day, then cleaned up and hurried home. As she walked up to her house, she noticed a figure standing at the entrance that did not resemble any of Andy’s workers. “Uh, Gittel?” “Hey, how’s it going, Lani? Goodness, it’s a mess in there. “OC19, 75%,” Riva said with a refreshing certainty. Sisters, nothing beat them. As Riva dusted the white coating from her sweater, Lani duly wrote down instructions for the painter. Then she took Riva to the baby room. “We’re doing three walls white, and one green accent wall. What do you think of North Shore Green? I’m worried that it looks a little too minty.” If Riva had sounded a little startled when Lani called her, she’d quickly switched to a nonchalant tone. “Yeah, sure, I’ll ask Yaakov to get the kids and stop in on my way home from work. So much fun!” And that was that. No fireworks. No flood of awkward feelings. The whole secrecy around the subject of construction had clearly become overrated. “Your house is stunning,” Riva commented as they trooped down the hallway to the girls’ room. “Ah, the closets… Heaven!” “Baruch Hashem…” Lani eyed Riva furtively. Her sister’s comment sounded genuine. Lani didn’t detect any flinch in her voice or her body language. Incongruously, her thoughts traveled to the anniversary food. Neither of them had brought up the topic again after the party. Lani had been left feeling both insulted and touched. And Riva — she’d left the party in a panic, and after that, she’d simply never said another word about it. But right now — choosing paint colors with her sister in her brand-new house — everything felt so… normal. So right. They were back in the dining room, deliver-

ing the final list of colors to Andy, when the door swung open. Chevi tiptoed around the debris and approached Lani. “Ma…” she said. “I think Fraidy Stroh wants to be my friend.” She’d barely finished her sentence when she noticed Riva standing at the other end of the room. Her face turned red and she ran back downstairs. *****

Supper would be late, but Riva wasn’t bothered. A strange energy flowed through her fingers as she cobbled together a meal for her family. Her mind whirled with paint colors and bathroom tiles and the lingering scent of sawdust. She hadn’t known what to make of Lani’s out-ofthe-blue call, but after visiting her house, she was left with the undeniably pleasant feeling: her sister was back in her life. Humming softly, Riva dropped a ball of burger mixture into the frying pan. “Ma?” Fraidy had inched over to where Riva stood, her eyes studiously glued to the Rubik’s cube in her hands. “Yes, sweetie?” Riva asked. “I think Chevi wants to be my friend.” “Oh, really! That’s — uh, isn’t that great?” Fraidy’s fingers fluttered around the cube until the center row fell into place. Then she slammed the toy down on the counter. “She wants to be my friend,” she erupted. “But what if I don’t want to be hers?” TO BE CONTINUED…

WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE DIAMOND DISTRICT, YOU MIGHT NOT BE SURE IF YOU’RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE. You would expect glitz and glam and gleaming, modern buildings at the hub that processes the majority of the diamonds that enter the U.S. But stepping onto this famed street, the corridor spanning 47th Street between 5th and 6th avenues, feels like a throwback to a century ago, or even a scene out of

shtetl life. Isolated flashes of modernity are dominated by an unremarkable conglomeration of buildings that still look the same as they did 50 years ago. A potpourri of languages assails the ears as, right on the sidewalks, two diamantaires haggle over a folded paper. A handshake and a slap on the back seals the deal worth tens of thousands of dollars to the exclamation of “mazel and bracha” between the pair as the goods deftly switch hands right there in the open. Where are the gleaming new structures, reflecting the glamor of riches and jewels the Diamond District holds? Where are the lawyers and carefully worded contracts backing up these deals? How is this block — with its distinctive old-world flavor dictating the ambiance, the operations and the chatter — still thriving?

ITS HISTORY IS RICH.

An 1894 rendering of the Diamond Exchange on 14 Maiden Lane

IT STARTED ON MAIDEN LANE The first home of New York’s jewelry industry was in what is today the financial district. Maiden Lane runs between the South Street Seaport and the site of the World Trade Center, and by 1795, the charming and historically significant street became the center of jewelry trade. Toward the end of the 19th century, a ten-story building — then one of the tallest in the city — was erected on Maiden Lane and named the Diamond Exchange. It was specially designed for jewelers, boasting large windows for optimal gem-viewing conditions, an ornate facade, and a strong infrastructure to accommodate the heavy safes dealers used. Maiden Lane diamonds came to be known as the only diamonds any self-respecting woman would wear, and the block would be frequented by New Yorkers seeking the finest jewels. Even though jewelry traders tried to move their businesses elsewhere over the years, only the Maiden Lane diamonds would sell, bringing them running right back to the diamond center to sell their wares. Maiden Lane in 1880 was already the headquarters of the jewelry trade.

The William Barthman Sidewalk Clock

As the 20th century turned, financial institutions started popping up on Maiden Lane. They easily outbid the jewelry merchants in their quest for more space, and the jewelers were faced with rents that were too high to contemplate. A new home for the jewelry trade was sorely needed. Some jewelers moved downtown near Canal Street, but a real estate broker by the name of Fenimore Goode, who’d constructed properties specifically for the jewelers and diamond dealers on 47th Street, was determined to see the industry move midtown. It took several years of convincing to get the reluctant Maiden Lane loyalists to relocate. As The New York Times expressed it, “The entrenched did not go gently,” but eventually they did, and the Diamond District on 47th Street was born. Maiden Lane still has some relics of its jewelry past. In 1899, William Barthman Jewelers embedded a clock into the sidewalk to attract customers, and the iconic timepiece is still trotted upon by hundreds of pedestrians daily. The original Diamond Exchange on 14 Maiden Lane, as well, stands erect, housing office rentals in the very space where jewelers once traded.

monds, which they’d conceal in their clothes. This led to many Jewish diamond traders. In the Middle Ages, when trade restrictions were placed on European Jewry, professions in banking and jewelry were common for the Jewish sector. Besides those being from the only allowed trades for Jews, the gentiles specifically wanted to entrust their finances and wealth with individuals they knew were honest. As the Diamond District settled down on 47th Street, an influx of Jewish immigration hit the streets of NYC, bringing with it skilled Jewish diamond cutters, craftsmen and jewelry merchants escaping the inferno of Europe, and specifically the diamond center in Belgium. These jewelers found business opportunities on 47th Street, and the Diamond District flourished. 126

Today, Diamond and Jewelry Way, as this 920-foot strip of 47th Street is known, is a melting pot of Belgian, Dutch, French, Indian, Korean, Russian, and predominantly Jewish diamond and jewelry merchants, many of them working in businesses that have been in their family for generations. The sounds and sights are market-like, with haggling in a variety of languages and accents punctuating the air that never seems to stand still, and with tourists, potential buyers, middlemen and merchants milling about. Unlike when they deal with “privates” — the general public — much of the trading conducted by insiders of the industry is based on trust and the upholding of sterling reputation. No merchant wants to risk tainting their good name and be shunned by the people of the trade. Nothing is kept secret in the inner halls of the Diamond District! Deals worth hundreds of thousands of dollars are sealed with a vigorous handshake and the customary wish for “mazel and bracha,” proclaimed by Jew and nonJew alike. Most businesses occupy booths in one of the exchanges 47th Street

is famous for. Hawkers stand in front of exchanges, trying to engage browsers and potential buyers and escort them to specific vendors, so they can earn a commission on the deals they bring.

WATCH THOSE DIAMONDS!

connected to the police department. They will only show one to two pieces of jewelry at a time, and have an extra pair of eyes fixated on the buyer. The diamond insiders also have their unique lingo that helps them keep tabs and mumble warnings to each other as they showcase their wares to potential customers. Buyers are often referred to as “G,” or “gee.” And a quick command to “sherry the G” is a message to one’s partner to get rid of the customer. Or an under-thebreath utterance of “2-10” is a warning to keep “two eyes on the ten fingers” of a suspiciouslooking browser. “Tee the gee,” warns someone to follow a customer who’d commissioned a piece of jewelry to make sure they don’t clinch a deal with another vendor on their way out instead, and often they will be escorted in that manner until safely seen off 47th Street.

It may seem so friendly, but security is tight on the block that’s home to so many riches. The police department has a large presence in the Diamond District. Both uniformed and undercover officers abound on the block, and retired armed 28 West 47th Street, circa 1940 officers patrol the storefronts. This particular stretch of city turf is covered in security cameras, which were partially funded by Homeland Security. Most shops and businesses are equipped with mantraps, vestibules between two sets of doors that lock visitors in to be carefully scrutinized and checked before the second set of doors is opened. A cutter displays a tool used to determine the angles of a large emerald-cut diamond Though there are many who walk their diamonds (go out with them on their person), some take extra measures like money belts, hidden pouches, or even armed security guards, and stick within the carry limits issued by their insurers. When showing jewelry to potential customers, vendors have security measures in place, from bulletproof cases Deals are made out in the open and panic buttons 128

DIAMOND SPEAK Jewelry lingo is not limited to “gee” phrases and other cautionary mumbles. The slang of 47th Street is vast, and includes a smattering of Yiddish, peppered with words from other languages. It rings as geshmak as shtetl marketplace talk because that’s exactly where these words originate. While in the greater diamond industry, stones are classified by the four C’s (cut, color, clarity and carat weight), on 47th Street, their descriptions are often a lot more colorful.

The Diamond District boasts two diamond-shaped street lamps

Over 90% of the diamonds entering the U.S. pass through the Diamond District in New York There are about 3,000 businesses on the 47th Street corridor between 5th and 6th, most of them located within its 25 exchanges Some 35,000 individuals are employed on this block alone $400 billion in transactions occur in the Diamond District on an average day

Opening up a brivke (the parcel-paper stones are wrapped in) to examine gems in question, the dealer may proclaim them strop (a stone that won’t sell), chazeray (junk), shlok (junk or a fake), or even worse: linksshtivel, literally left-footed boots, an entire lot of rubbish. And usage of these terms is by far not limited to Yiddish speakers of the trade. Staring into the loupe at a promising gem, the expert will decide if it’s a mama-zetzer, a large diamond, a matzah (a stone that looks deceivingly larger because the widest spot was flattened), or just a bluff stone (a diamond that appears valuable, but upon closer inspection is not).

Words like shmutz (which can be cleaned away with a shmatte) get thrown around as the dealer combs the selection for a metzia, or even better, a geneiva! Who doesn’t want a steal? Often, he’ll sidle up to someone he trusts, the meivan, of course, so he can shats the stone for him and give him his opinion as to its value. And then hopefully he will do what on 47th Street is called make mazel — seal the deal and utter the blessings for mazel and bracha. But that never gets done in a jiffy, because in the diamond trade, haggling is par for the course. Or, if we want to use their lingo, you get to hondel! The negotiations go on (no shame in trying to make a good deal!) until the buyer encourages the seller to nem di gelt, take the money and let’s close this. People also get their fair share of labels in this trade. Everyone knows who’s the mentch, who’s the ganev, and who’s the schlepper (the late payer). And since the Diamond District is its own little world, a good name is worth its weight in diamonds.

Today the NYC Diamond District is anchored by the International Gem Tower (IGT) at 50 West 47th Street 132

The Finest Of The Diamond District Boro Parkers who want to get great deals on gorgeous diamond jewelry no longer have to make the trip to 47th Street in Manhattan. Yitzchok and Leah Zwiebel brought a slice of the diamond district to Boro Park, with the opening of The Showcase, their elegant jewelry boutique located at 1451 48th St. After more than 25 years of working as a diamond dealer, cutter, and designer on 47th Street and traveling the world to find the finest diamonds, Mr. Zwiebel brought his knowledge and expertise back to the neighborhood. About what are the Zwiebels most looking forward in their venture? “We want to work more closely with our customers and get them excited about the Diamond buying experience and gorgeous pieces of jewelry,” says Mrs. Zwiebel, who learned the diamond business by working at jewelry shows with her husband over the years. “We’re in it together.” Although Mr. Zwiebel creates many classic styles of engagement rings, eternity bands, necklaces and tennis bracelets, customers also can dream up their own designs. “Customers who want specific items can ask my husband to make them, of course,” said Mrs. Zwiebel, who noted that her husband has always been known for providing top-quality diamonds and workmanship. In addition, customers can bring along jewelry they no longer wear and sell it for cash, or alternately, they can trade it in for something that suits who they are now. And of course, Mrs. Zwiebel confides with a wink, “There is no better way to show appreciation to a hardworking Yiddishe wife than giving her a beautiful piece of jewelry, l’kevod Yom Tov.” The Showcase is open from 11am to 6pm on Sunday thru Thursday, after hours, customers can call (718) 710-7288 for appointments.

Timeless in beauty and eternal in value, there is no gem as beloved as the diamond. Let’s see what it’s like to earn a living handling these stones.

AN AGE-OLD INDUSTRY In 1795, on the heels of the Revolutionary War, a group of jewelers came together at Maiden Lane in Manhattan. They formed a consortium, where wealthy New Yorkers could go to buy jewelry. Today, those fledgling businesses have burgeoned into the bustling Diamond District on 47th Street in Manhattan. The street is lined with jewelry stores, and the buildings are filled with offices where diamond dealers broker deals. At any time, a visitor to the Diamond District will see a conglomerate of Jews – Israelis, Sefardim, chassidim, Ashkenazim. There are also many Indians in the mix. Today, says Heshy Katzman, who has been a diamond dealer for 40 years, the scene looks different than it used to. Internet shopping has affected the diamond industry, with more consumers buying diamonds online. Before the days of the Internet, members of the Diamond Dealers’ Club would get together in a huge room filled with tables, and buy and sell diamonds there. There was no other way to know which diamonds were in someone else’s possession. Mr. Katzman would find out what his customers needed and knew where to get it. Now, a click of the computer can bring up the diamond one is seeking. Still, Mr. Katzman cautions buyers to beware. “When buying a diamond on the Internet, you’re basically buying a piece of paper,” he says. “You’re looking at the diamond’s certificate, but you don’t necessarily see the diamond itself. Sometimes there are pictures of the diamond, but you have to know what you’re looking at.” And yet, despite the popularity of the Web, over 90% of diamonds in the United

States are estimated to come in through the Diamond District. Sales there average a whopping $400 million in a single day, and $24 billion in a year.

ON GUARD “Security concerns are definitely part of the business,” says Mr. Katzman. They’ve all heard these stories. “There are certain areas I won’t travel to for business; I stay away from downtown areas and bad neighborhoods. And when I come back from a business trip, I never go straight to my house. I always stop at my office first, even though that adds an extra hour to my trip.” But thieves can be devious. One time they followed a diamond dealer to his home after work, only to pounce on him when he left his house the next morning for Shacharis. Another time, a dealer was followed on Shabbos. He ran into the closest shul to escape his predators. That’s why top security is non-negotiable. Enter 580 5th Avenue, one of the buildings filled with diamond dealers’ offices, and you’ll see a massive building with 34 floors and 13 elevators, which are always filled with people. But security to get into the building is tight, and double interlocking doors leading to private offices lend another measure of security. There is also an option to rent vault space in the building’s basement or install a safe in one’s office. Gone are the days when people walked around with precious diamonds in briefcases. Today, merchandise can be shipped directly from the building without the need to venture outside with it.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER Chaya Edelstein, of C. Edelstein Jewelry Boutique in Monsey, is a jeweler who grew up with diamonds — literally. After World War Two, her grandfather developed his own technique to color-treat diamonds, which he would then sell. Chaya’s father, Mr. Duvid Fuchs, eventually joined the family business. He would bring his daughter to work on 47th Street whenever she had vacation from school. Eventually, Chaya built her own business, which is steadily gaining popularity. Recently, five minutes before the zman on Friday, the security company employed by the building hosting Mr. Fuchs’ office called him to say that one of the many alarms guarding his office had gone off. It was too close to Shabbos to do anything about it, and the family had to wait until Shabbos was over to find out what had happened. On Motzei Shabbos, Mr. Fuchs drove down to his office and entered it, escorted by policemen, to see if there had been a break-in. Thankfully, they discovered that the alarm had gone off due to a glitch in the system. But the threat was real. In fact, Mr. Fuchs heard the following story firsthand from fellow jeweler Hershy Grossman*. Hershy had spent the day in the car, driving to three different states to meet with customers and sell them diamonds. Now he was making the long trip back to his home in New York, some six hours away. As he changed lanes on the highway, he glanced into the rearview mirror — and that’s when he saw it: a sleek black car, gliding into place behind him. It could have been a regular car, but something niggled at Hershy. He drove a few miles, looked into the mirror, and switched lanes again. Sure enough, the black car stayed right behind him like an ominous shadow. There were still a few hours left on the road — but

Although Chaya Edelstein grew up with diamonds, she realized early on that she had a flair for jewelry design. Her first customer, in fact, was her grandmother, who commissioned a pair of earrings from her. Today Chaya works not only with diamonds, but also with rubies, sapphire and gold, turning them into beautiful pieces worthy of adorning her customers. Chaya sells 14k and 18k gold and diamond fashion jewelry, as well as Italian designer pieces. How can one ensure that jewelry lasts forever? “Be very careful with it,” Chaya says. “Don’t bake or cook with rings or other jewelry. Try not to bang your jewelry around. And don’t polish it too often. Use alcohol to clean diamonds, or use soap and hot water, and rub gently with a soft rag.”

out to police, who immediately arrested him.” Did they recoup their losses? “No,” says Chaya. “Unfortunately, stolen goods are resold a minute later, so once it’s stolen, it’s gone. And when there isn’t enough money involved, it often doesn’t pay to deal with insurance.” So, yes, the threat is real.

AN INDUSTRY OF TRUST

he couldn’t go home. There was no way he was leading these thieves to his family. There wasn’t much they could do to him on the highway, he knew. There were cars whizzing in both directions, and too many witnesses to make a stickup plausible. But the moment he stopped, he risked being robbed of the diamonds he was carrying. Finally, Hershy hit upon a solution. Without stopping once throughout the next six hours, he drove straight to 47th Street in Manhattan, where he worked. The black car stayed right behind him the entire time. As soon as he reached the building where his office was located, he yanked his car into park, jumped out, and ran into the lobby. Finally, he was safe. The building was protected by round-the-clock security. There was nothing of value in his car; his diamonds were securely fastened inside a vest he wore under his clothing. Peering through a lobby window, Hershy watched the black car drive off. Its prey had escaped. “That’s when I bumped into Hershy,” Mr. Fuchs says. “He was still in the lobby of the building, trying his best to get back to himself.” According to Chaya, New York’s bail laws, which favor criminals, mean that there are so many more thefts taking place today. That’s why jewelers nowadays are purchasing larger insurance policies and otherwise being more careful in terms of security. “I wear my bag under my coat these days,” says Chaya. Because people with nefarious intentions keep track of familiar faces on 47th Street, and Chaya doesn’t want to be an easy target. “I was at the Diamond Exchange recently,” Chaya shares, “when someone ran in and exclaimed to another man, ‘I caught him!’ Turned out that the two, along with another jeweler, were victims of theft a few days earlier, and after recognizing the thief on the street, this first man pointed him 146

The diamond industry is one that is based largely on trust. Still, before any business transactions are conducted, one must make sure that the person with whom he is dealing with is trustworthy. The Jewelers’ Board of Trade (JBT) provides ratings for diamond dealers. Even so, one must make sure to check out unfamiliar dealers by getting several references. “I give references all the time,” Mr. Katzman says. “I’m always dealing with new customers. Today, you can find this information online.” What about the stone itself? How does one know that he’s getting the real deal? The trusty loupe is every dealer’s go-to tool. It reveals imperfections, shows any white or black dots on the diamond’s surface, how white the diamond is, and the quality of the cut. This is important, since a high-quality cut results in a brilliant, sparkling diamond. Today, however, with the rising popularity of lab-grown stones, it’s becoming increasingly harder to determine a diamond’s authenticity. The diamond business has been affected by the proliferation of lab-grown stones, and there’s a lot of fraud involved. “Unless you have a special machine that can determine

if a diamond is real, there’s no way of knowing if it’s labgrown or not,” says Mr. Katzman. “I was taken once with a diamond that I was sure was real. I went to get it certified, and the lab said it was lab-grown.” To both laymen and professionals, lab-grown diamonds look like the real thing — for a fraction of the price. However, when it comes to special occasion jewelry, many people still prefer real diamonds. What happens in the event you decide to update your diamond ring and get a new setting, or you’ve given in your kallah bracelet for a polish? How do you know you’re getting back the same diamonds you handed in? “You have to trust the person you’re taking it to,” says Mr. Katzman. “Some people remove certified diamonds and switch them with lab-grown diamonds. This happens even if the stone is engraved, which is the case with many certified diamonds, especially expensive ones. That’s why people are getting these machines that can tell the difference.” Chaya agrees that you need to work with a jeweler you trust, and she adds that having stones switched out is not something you generally need to worry about. “Going back three generations already, we’ve never experienced such a thing when sending pieces out to be worked on. We’ve always worked with people we knew we could trust.” A good machine costs between $5,000 and $7,000, but it’s worth the investment. Besides diamonds, more expensive machines are able to check the authenticity of brand-name pieces of jewelry, such as Rolex watches and Tiffany jewelry. Every piece of jewelry is made with a specific alloy, a mixture of chemical elements. A good machine can determine if another element is mixed in, rendering the piece a fake.

THE PLACE TO BE Even for the jewelers who spend so many hours each week on 47th Street, the Diamond District is still a fascinating place to be. “Other than small eateries, there aren’t any other stores in the Diamond District,” says Chaya, “so the windows are all full of glittering jewels. And there’s always lots of foot traffic, so it’s not like you can just keep walking at a regular pace.” And if there’s a trade show coming up soon, there is no vehicular traffic at all. The street gets blocked off by police, and only Brinks trucks can enter as they handle the deliveries coming and going. “It’s a very happening place,” says Chaya, “and since there are so many Yidden here, Chabad is also pretty active.” This includes shluchim reaching out to unaffiliated Jews and offering them lulavim and esrogim before Sukkos, and the large menorah they set up before Chanukah. According to Chaya, the area also boasts a beautiful Sefardi shul and kollel, as well as a chassidishe shteibel that’s always open for minyanim, along with the ubiquitous coffee and cake. For the businesses that call 47th Street home, this seems to be the theme: Whether its security checks or thefts, outreach or business, there’s always something happening in the Diamond District. *Name has been changed. 148

ver 40 years ago, city dwellers began to settle in Rockland County, where they hoped to enjoy the peaceful, bucolic surroundings. With many breadwinners retaining employment in New York City, dependable transportation between Monsey and the city was an absolute necessity. That’s when MONSEYTRAIL Bus Service (formerly Monsey Trails), today a household name, stepped up to fill the need. These buses have become more than just a way to get to work; many buses double as a shul on wheels.

BUSES AND BIMAHS With many commuters to Manhattan intent upon beating NYC rushhour traffic so that they can begin their work day punctually, every minute in the morning is at a premium. That’s why MONSEYTRAIL buses morphed into mobile minyanim. “Buses leaving Monsey before 8:00 a.m. have a Sefer Torah on board if there’s a minyan on the bus that will be utilizing it,” Mr. Shea Gross, a dispatcher at MONSEYTRAIL, says. “Pre-COVID, we had several bus routes scheduled for the same time, but we kept track of which buses hosted a minyan so that we could make sure they had a Sefer Torah on board.” Buses departing Monsey after 8 a.m. do not have a minyan on the bus, since generally, passengers on those buses have already davened Shacharis. Each minyan designates its own baal tefillah and baal korei, and many minyanim have even appointed a passenger to share a devar Torah after davening on topics such as an upcoming Yom Tov, Hilchos Shabbos, and the like. This often leads to a spirited discussion, with passengers debating thorny halachic topics. “When you get onto the minyan bus, you feel like you’re stepping into a

shul,” says Rabbi Leibish Becker, a long-time member of a minyan bus. “There’s camaraderie, there’s learning, there’s schmoozing… There are even tzedakah collections!” What Rabbi Becker likes most about davening on the bus, though, is that no one is in a rush, and everyone is fully present. “No one comes late and no one leaves early, because there’s nowhere else to go,” he says.

Reb Chaim gave the go-ahead, with no way of knowing that in the years ahead, MONSEYTRAIL would be zoche to purchase additional Sifrei Torah. As more minyanim were formed, the new commuters also raised funds so they could contribute to the purchase of a Sefer Torah for their own bus. To keep things organized and streamlined, buses are generally utilized for the same routes. This means that the Sifrei Torah can remain on the bus between readings, and the driver doesn’t have to worry about finding the Sefer Torah before starting his route. “We’re extra careful to keep the Sefer Torah on the same bus, since a Sefer Torah must ideally be kept in The Aron Kodesh back in the day 156

since 1997. “We waited for another bus to meet up with ours so that we could lein from the Torah that day.” But such instances are extremely rare. Mr. Lunger recalls how seriously his father and grandfather took the responsibility of having the Sefer Torah on the minyan bus: “Before each bus had its dedicated Sefer Torah, my father would make sure to take the Sefer Torah onto the bus himself each morning.”

MINYAN BONDS Davening and learning together easily transforms a group of individual commuters into close friends. “The passengers in each minyan become a close-knit family, with a lot more bringing them together than getting from Point A to Point B,” Mr. Adler says. “When someone is missing for a day or two, they get a warm, ‘Shalom aleichem, we missed you,’ when they get back.” Bonds formed on the minyan bus extend beyond the davening. “Passengers bring cake to commemorate a Hachnasas Sefer Torah in 2001 yahrtzeit, baalei simcha bring drinks to share a l’chaim,” Mr. Adler elaborates, “and I bring doughnuts on Chanukah.” His bus has even seen a kiddush for a baby naming! Mr. Adler has an extensive email list of current and past passengers, and he makes good use of this resource in several ways. Every Erev Shabbos Mr. Adler sends out divrei Torah, and he announces simchas, nichum aveilim, and lost-and-found information, as necessary. He even utilizes the list — which includes many professionals — to share job offers and resumes of job seekers. The men in the minyan form close relationships and stand by each other. On more than one occasion, fellow commuters have raised funds to help one of their own with wedding expenses.

one spot, and we also want to be careful not to run the risk of traveling without a Sefer Torah,” Mr. Gross says. Mr. Lunger shares a bit about the logistics involved in making sure that a Sefer Torah is always on the bus. “Sometimes we have no choice but to remove a Sefer Torah from a bus. It could be that another bus needed it because something was wrong with theirs, or that a bus was sent for repairs or inspection and the Sefer Torah was taken into the office for safekeeping. I give loads of credit to my father, Reb Sruly Lunger, for always making sure that the Sefer Torah gets back to the bus where it belongs so that no minyan is stuck without one.” Similarly, when a Sefer Torah is taken to be checked by a sofer, the dispatcher must remember to take a replacement Sefer Torah onto the bus. “I remember when a minyan suddenly found itself without Davening and learning together easily transforms a Sefer Torah,” recalls Mr. Zvi Adler, a longtime bus driver who a group of individual commuters into close friends has been driving a minyan bus 158

HACHNASAS SEFER TORAH When minyanim were first beginning on the bus, used Sifrei Torah were purchased, but these often posed difficulties since she’eilos were found mid-leining, and some Sifrei Torah could no longer be used. One brave minyan rolled out an ambitious fundraising campaign to purchase a brand-new Sefer Torah, with MONSEYTRAIL contributing significant funds. After some time, most minyanim recognized the benefit of writing a new Sefer Torah. While the price was a lot higher than for used Sifrei Torah, the investment paid off in the peace of mind it provided. A brand new Sefer Torah meant that a Hachnasas Sefer Torah was in order. The minyan passengers, along with the help of MONSEYTRAIL, prepared a festive Hachnasas Sefer Torah in which the entire Monsey community could participate. Long-time Monsey residents recall that first MONSEYTRAIL Hachnasas Sefer Torah with nostalgia. Children lined the streets with flags and torches; grown men, dressed in Shabbos clothes, danced all the way from the home of a generous donor, where the kesivas ha’osiyos was completed, to the hall of Yeshiva Spring Valley for the meal; and a parade of MONSEYTRAIL buses followed behind. Subsequent Hachnasos Sifrei Torah were on a smaller scale, but joyous all the same.

TRAVEL TRANSFORMED The evolution of MONSEYTRAIL Bus Service from a practical transportation solution to a vibrant mobile minyan is a testament to decades of dedication of commuters who make the most of their travel time, and a bus company that goes beyond transportation. It’s a story of narrow seats transformed into sacred spaces, of a unique and meaningful camaraderie among commuters. It’s a story of how commuters keep their priorities straight, without getting lost in the daily grind. It’s a story of how we adapt without sacrificing, and never forget where we are really going.

CHARTING NEW WATERS The Hudson River derives its name from the renowned English explorer Henry Hudson, who navigated the river in 1609 in pursuit of a northwest passage to Asia. His voyage established the groundwork for European settlement in the area.

The Hudson River has borne witness to a multitude of important historical events, including the arrival of Dutch settlers, the establishment of New Amsterdam and the rise of industrialization. The Hudson River played an especially pivotal role as a strategic waterway during the American Revolutionary War. Control over the river was crucial for military transportation and supplies, and it witnessed several battles that ultimately influenced the war’s outcome. The Hudson is also the setting for other historically famous landmarks. Partially belonging to both New York and New Jersey, Ellis Island is located just south of the river’s mouth in New York Harbor. Continuing southward, you’ll meet Lady Liberty.

PANORAMIC PARADISE Rolling hills, lush forests and charming towns are among the scenery for which the Hudson River Valley is famous. It’s no wonder the river has inspired numerous works of art. These landscape paintings capture the breathtaking beauty and scenic vistas of the regions. One of the Hudson River’s most iconic scenes is the awe-inspiring vista of the Manhattan skyline. The contrast between the lively cityscape and the serene river creates a breathtaking tableau.

FEATHERS, FINS AND FLIPPERS The Hudson River sustains a diverse range of wildlife. Along its shores, one can encounter native species including striped bass, bald eagles and seals, making it a bustling center of biodiversity. About 220 species of fish are currently found in the Hudson River.

POURING PURE WATER In the past, General Electric stood as one of the primary contributors to Hudson River pollution. For 30 years, from 1947 to 1977, GE dumped tons of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into the Hudson River. But there’s hope. In the past few decades, the once heavily polluted Hudson River witnessed a remarkable environmental recovery. The efforts aimed at river restoration have resulted in enhanced water quality and the return of various aquatic species. Today the Hudson River serves as the source of drinking water for millions of New York residents. Rigorous water treatments are employed to ensure its cleanliness and dependability.

Want to go fishing in the Hudson? Fish away, but order dinner. Due to water pollution, it’s not recommended to consume catches caught in the Hudson River.

BRIDGING COMMUNITIES AND SCENIC VIEWS The Hudson River boasts several renowned bridges, including the George Washington Bridge, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, and the Walkway Over the Hudson. These impressive feats of engineering link various communities and provide breathtaking vistas of the river. The walkway over the Hudson is a cantilever steel bridge that stretches across the river. Extending a total of 6,768 feet, it proudly holds the title of the world’s second-longest pedestrian footbridge.

HERO’S HIGHWAY On January 15, 2009, the Hudson River became the site of a remarkable emergency landing that became known as the “miracle on the Hudson.” Pilots Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles skillfully and coolly executed a controlled emergency water landing of an Airbus A320, saving all 155 passengers and crew members.

ALEXANDER… YOU MUST EAT.

IT’S VEGETABLE SOUP. PLEASE FINISH BY THE TIME I GET BACK.

NO! NO! IT’S MY SON! IT’S ALEXANDER!

WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED BY: BATSHEVA HAVLIN

WHY ISN’T HE EATING? I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. MAYBE IF I TELL HIM...

DID I HEAR MYSELF RIGHT? ALEXANDER!

THE YEAR IS 1888. THE STEAMSHIP MAKES ITS WAY TO ARGENTINA.

LEIB, I TOLD YOU NOT TO EAT SO MUCH. IS THAT IT? DOES THE FRESH AIR HELP YOU FEEL BETTER?

NOT REALLY. I’M SO SCARED… WHAT IF WE DROWN? THE SHIP IS ROCKING FROM SIDE TO SIDE… COMPARED TO THE STORMS AND UPHEAVALS WE’VE BEEN THROUGH SINCE WE SET OUT…

EVEN IF THE SHIP SINKS, CHAS V’SHALOM, YOU’LL STILL STAY AFLOAT LIKE A ROUND, CUTE BALL.

SHE’S NOT DOING SO WELL. TATTY TRIED COOLING HER DOWN WITH COLD TOWELS, BUT HER FEVER ISN’T GOING DOWN. AND I COULDN’T FIND A DOCTOR ON THE SHIP. OH, NO! SHE’S COUGHING AGAIN...

…THIS IS NOTHING SERIOUS. I CHECKED THE SHIP’S ENGINE ROOMS EARLIER. EVERYTHING SEEMS FINE. AND BESIDES...

VERY FUNNY. HOW IS ESTERINA? IS SHE STILL THROWING UP?

TO BE CONTINUED...
