What are the things in your life so important that they are worth waiting for?
An important question at a time when society is so driven by immediate gratification. Gifts received too easily lose their luster and are quickly forgotten.
In Ballet, there is nothing instant. Ballet requires consistency, dedication and above all...patience. The Sleeping Beauty is such a beautiful metaphor for this art form and its enduring magnificence. Aurora’s wait for the kiss of true love demonstrates that what is truly important is worth waiting for.
“You, our patrons, donors, students, staff and the community at large have grown together to make this possible”
At Orlando Ballet, scores of dancers have held the torch over five decades to bring us to this day – a dance company continuing to ascend to prominence through trials of many kinds, always focused upon delivering the Artistic Vision set before them. Always improving, never resting.
You, our patrons, donors, students, staff and the community at large have grown together to make this possible – to arrive at our 50th Anniversary Season delivering repertoire only dreamt of a few short years ago.
Where will we go from here? With the vision of Jorden Morris, the leadership and guidance of our Board, and passionate keepers of our mission serving across the artistic, school, enrichment and administrative functions, we are ready to chart our next fifty years.
Please join us by continuing your support and showing our artists that it has indeed been worth the wait.
With deepest gratitude,
Never underestimate the power of a single kiss, especially when such a small, tender gesture proves to be the most powerful antidote for ending a 100-year-long revenge curse placed upon a beautiful princess. Romantic right? The Sleeping Beauty is without question one of the most beloved fairy tales in the world. It’s a story where love conquers all and (almost) everyone lives happily ever after, and clearly why I thought this an ideal choice for our Valentine’s weekend performance.
“Ballet is special; it’s an extraordinary way to tell a story”
The quintessential love story, The Sleeping Beauty offers more than classic ballet; it is known for its exquisite and supremely challenging choreography, including the iconic and enthralling Rose Adagio, a true moment to remember. Guest Choreographer Christopher Stowell’s production -- based on Marius Petipa’s original 1890 production -- has a subtle human touch that ushers the audience through this whimsical journey of good versus evil and jealousy versus hate. Each and every delicate move is performed to the lush, emotional pull of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s music. Stowell, the son of professional ballet dancers, blends his experience, knowledge, tradition, and grace to present you with a completely mesmerizing story.
Our dancers could not be more excited and ready to return to the stage in a such a remarkable and demanding production, especially after our wonderfully successful world premiere of The Nutcracker last December. Make no mistake, when they bring these characters to life on stage our dancers are sharing their passion for the art form as well as their appreciation and love for those who have come to watch them perform. Ballet is special; it’s an extraordinary way to tell a story and to enjoy a romantic occasion with someone you care about.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to our entire organization including Christopher Stowell and his team, to Orlando Ballet’s artistic and production teams, our extraordinary dancers, our Board of Directors and to my wife, Lisa Thorn Morris. And most of all I offer my profound thanks to you, our loyal audience members. We feel the love!

The obvious transition for a professional ballet dancer after a performance career, is teaching and choreography. After retiring from the stage, Jorden Morris followed an academic path that included studying teaching and choreography at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) and later dance and theatre arts at New York University. Morris focused on early French choreography and pedagogy by training with Claude Bessy and Serge Golovine at the prestigious Paris Opera, and continued his studies with Russian masters Sergei Berejnoi and Tatiana Terekhova at Boston Ballet.
Morris’ elite training steered his trajectory toward artistic leadership and choreography at the RWB where he premiered his first work – a one-act interpretation of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers.
In 1999, he joined Boston Ballet’s artistic staff and thrived working with choreographers Nach Duato, William Forsythe, Chris Wheeldon and Rudi Van Dantzig. There, he choreographed two pieces for Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Canada. Ultimately, Morris became Chief Ballet Master, lighting a route for his return to Canada as demand for his creativity grew.
From 2002 to 2013, Morris served as RWB’s associate school director and was commissioned to create his first, full-length production – the charming and whimsical, which premiered in 2006, to become the
company’s best-selling production, surpassed three years later by Morris’ own Moulin Rouge® the Ballet, whose debut was so grand that performances had to be added.
Never content to work on just one thing, in 2002 Morris directed and choreographed “Head Start/ Feet First,” a collaboration between the RWB and four intercity academic schools, which transformed Canada’s popular children’s television show, “The Toy Castle.” Repurposing the program as an interactive performance with a live host and interactive dance for pre-school children, Morris also starred in the series.
The RWB later premiered two other new works by Morris - The Doorway, set to the music, poetry and voice of Leonard Cohen; and MOA, a work inspired by the artist Egon Schiele.
Meanwhile, in 2013/2014, Moulin Rouge® the Ballet returned to Canada after a successful world tour before 240,000 people throughout North America and Europe, inspiring Morris to translate his live dance production into a feature film. The sweeping romance later toured through China, Europe and again in the US while Peter Pan was being performed by the RWB, Pittsburgh Ballet and Nevada Ballet Theatre.
While Morris’ creations traveled, he was serving as Artistic Director of Edmonton’s Citie Ballet where he premiered more new work, including Ophelia and Mozart 42 and Jacinto and Tierra. He also choreographed Turas and Bach to Bach. While in Edmonton, Morris held another title, that of Senior Creative Director with Canada’s Shumka Ukrainian Dance company.
In 2019, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre premiered The Great Gatsby, Morris’ new glamorous epic ballet with an original score by composer Carl Davis. Soon after, Morris came to Orlando Ballet in 2020 as Artist in Residence and where he staged his trio of grand ballets. In 2021 he became the ballet’s Artistic Director. As Orlando Ballet celebrates its 50th year, the season’s highlight will be Morris’ newest creation, a completely reimagined and newly choreographed production of The Nutcracker.
Jorden Morris Artistic DirectorAs Associate Artistic Director at Orlando Ballet, Lisa Thorn Morris brings extensive professional experience as a former principal dancer, choreographer, and educator, contributing to the success of the professional Company.

She also served as Kansas City Ballet’s Associate Ballet Mistress and ultimately Ballet Mistress in Residence. Other career highlights include performing professionally with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Albany/Berkshire Ballet, Owen/Cox Dance Group, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Starlight Theatre of Kansas City, and Wylliams Henry Contemporary Dance.

Originally from a small town in Southern Illinois, Heath Gill, spent much of his performance career at Atlanta Ballet. In his tenure with the organization, he quickly rose to performing featured and principal roles in Atlanta Ballet’s widely varied repertoire that included renowned creators such as John McFall, Jorden Morris, Christopher Wheeldon, James Kudelka, Twyla Tharp, David Bintley, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Jorma Elo, Val Caniparoli, Helen Pickett, Liam Scarlett, Jiri Kylian, Alex Eckman, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Michael Pink, and Ohad Naharin. Heath received critical acclaim for his performances and was recognized as one of ArtsATL’s “30 under 30” and Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”.
While still performing for Atlanta Ballet, Heath had opportunities to step into leadership roles by assisting in restaging ballets and creating his first choreographic works for Atlanta Ballet’s summer company Wabi Sabi, where he also helped produce the performances in a production manager role. In 2017 Heath co-founded Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre in Atlanta Georgia. The new contemporary ballet company quickly boomed into a year-round company with a strong school. Beyond bringing his skills to the stage for the company, Gill served on the board of directors and as the company’s Production Director and Resident Choreographer. In his time at Terminus, he choreographed many full evening dance works. His production, Marley Was Dead, To Begin With was named “Best Dance Production of 2020 by ArtsATL.”
Gill received acclaim in Orlando in 2022 when his production “Confronting Genius” was performed by Orlando Ballet as part of The Premiere Collection. Following the success of his previous visit, in 2023 he was thrilled to join the artistic team at Orlando Ballet as the Rehearsal Director. In his new role, Heath brings with him his wide net of knowledge on movement including ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, gymnastics, musical theater, and martial arts, as well as a background in music, experience in production design, and a deep understanding of the needs of a non-profit organization. Heath has a sincere love for coaching and is thrilled to be passing his skill and love of the art form on to the next generation.

King Florestan’s court gathers for the christening of his daughter, the Princess Aurora. As fairies present gifts which foretell Aurora’s elegant attributes, the festivities are interrupted by the arrival of the evil fairy Carabosse, irate that she was not invited. She bears no gift, she informs the Queen, but a curse. On Aurora’s sixteenth birthday, she will pierce her finger on a spindle and die. The benevolent Lilac Fairy intervenes with her gift—a reprieve from death. Aurora will not die, but will sleep for 100 years, to be awakened by a Prince’s kiss.
At Princess Aurora’s 16th birthday celebration, she accepts a rose from four suitors who seek her hand in marriage. A mysterious guest arrives and gives Aurora a bouquet. The guest is Carabosse, who has hidden a spindle among the blossoms. The unsuspecting Aurora pierces her finger and seems to die. As the court is thrown into chaos, the Lilac Fairy fulfills her promise of reprieve. She weaves a spell of sleep over Aurora and everyone at court, and enfolds the palace in a forest of lilacs and vines.
A century later, Prince Florimund and his entourage are hunting, but the Prince is distracted, dreaming of ideal love. The Lilac Fairy appears and shows him a vision of Princess Aurora, the woman of his dreams. The Prince begs to find this beauty, and the Lilac Fairy takes him to the palace where Aurora lies sleeping. Florimund tries in vain to rouse her, until it occurs to him to awaken Aurora with a kiss. The spell is broken.
Fairy tale characters like the Bluebird, Puss in Boots, and the White Cat join the court to celebrate the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund with dancing. All rejoice that good has prevailed over evil. The marriage of Aurora and Florimund restores the kingdom to balance and hope for a bright future.

At Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute, our sports medicine team cares for patients with a wide range of athletic abilities and performance levels — from recreational to amateur to professional.
We take great pride in the relationships we have with numerous athletic teams and organizations, and that most certainly extends to the Orlando Ballet Company.
Despite a common misconception that ballet dancers are not athletes, we know professional ballet dancers are indeed athletes in every sense of the word. Just like other professional athletes, they spend years honing their skills to reach peak performance. Company dancers go through very rigorous training and a demanding schedule. And so, just like any other athlete in any other professional sport, they can sustain injuries. And while the care we provide is tailored to each sport, we don’t treat our dancers any differently than any of our other professional athletes in terms of our commitment and quality of care.
As the official medical team of the Orlando Ballet Company and School, Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute provides comprehensive performance health services. An athletic trainer or physical therapist is at Harriet’s Orlando Ballet
Centre every weekday that the company members are training or practicing. The new on-site Orlando Health Treatment and Recovery Room provides a dedicated space for our team to care for the dancers, including orthopedic assessment, manual therapy and rehabilitation services along with access to motion capture technology and equipment such as massage guns, foam rollers and recovery boots. Elizabeth Davis, MD, is one of the team physicians and medical director for the ballet company and is in daily communication with the team regarding any issues or injuries.
A member of the team also is backstage at every performance, providing pre-performance treatments and standing by in case of injury during the show. Either Dr. Davis, a resident, fellow or physician assistant also is in the audience, for extra support.
As with every production, The Sleeping Beauty involves intensive preparation. Dancers must learn challenging new choreography and stage settings. With such intense training, which can be 6-to-8-hour days, six days a week, and a lot of repetitive movements, much of what our team sees are overuse injuries as well as muscle strains, ligament strains and stress fractures.
Courtney Butler, Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute head athletic trainer for the ballet company says, “We are kind of the boots

athlete puts their trust and literally their livelihood in your hands, it’s very special. That relationship is something I take very seriously, and I am going to do everything I can to help them heal and get back to where they need to be.”
“The performance health team that treats these athletes on a daily basis really help keep them healthy,” says Dr. Davis. “If an injury is serious or not improving, then they need to see me.”

That usually means a same- or next-day appointment. At the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute downtown complex, Dr. Davis has everything she needs right at her fingertips. She truly appreciates the value in having all orthopedic services under one roof. Whether an MRI, appointment with a surgeon, or rehabilitation therapy, it all can be scheduled in a timely fashion that’s easily accessible and convenient for the dancer.

She adds, “I love seeing them on the stage doing what they love doing. And knowing that I and my team helped get them back on stage is an indescribable feeling and honestly, why I do this.”
Courtney, who is going on six years on the ballet team, echoes those feelings. “I have a very close relationship with these dancers. And so, I get emotional when they get hurt, but I get just as emotional when they recover and perform on stage. I’m nurturing their physical and mental health, then I also have the joy of being able to watch them on stage, showcasing their incredible talent.”
