LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
All good things must come to an end including Orlando Ballet’s remarkable 50th Anniversary year. We are concluding a spectacular season with our production of Casanova, a ballet by Kenneth Tindall, which is quite the naughty, but stunning ballet. This particular production is big and it’s bold, like Orlando Ballet has proven to be.
As artistic director, one of my responsibilities is to curate programming that showcases and celebrates artistic excellence and offers variety and entertainment. From Reflections our opening production, and the world premiere of our new and wonderfully popular Nutcracker to our beautifully diverse Director’s Choice, and the extraordinary Sleeping Beauty, Orlando Ballet stepped out and up further than ever before and we did so with intention and strength.
Dance is about joy, movement, musicality and expression – it connects us all. Nowhere is that more evident than on virtually every popular social media platform where at any time one can watch performances by professionals as well as those who have never taken a single dance lesson. They all just share a love of dance.
And that is why my goal is to find new ways that encourage and welcome everyone and anyone to come see our dancers. The tradition of ballet can be intimidating, but the art form has evolved significantly in ways that appeal to everyone. The scope of what’s available through dance is what makes it all magical and joyful. Seeing professional dancers perform extraordinary acts of artistry and athleticism is exhilarating. I have spoken to a number of audience members whose first experience with ballet occurred this season and now they’re enthusiastically coming back for more. It happens every time. There is so much to see and feel including the hard work, commitment and discipline of the young men and women who make up our dance company.
As we conclude this year on such a high note, I’d like to thank the Orlando Ballet organization from our board of directors, the executive and administrative staffs, production and costuming teams, our hardworking and talented dancers, and, of course my wife, Lisa Morris. Thank you to you, our audience, and please accept my invitation to follow our activities over the summer as we prepare for the 2024-2025 season. And I hope next season you’ll bring your friends, especially those who have never seen a ballet. Come in jeans or sparkles. It doesn’t matter. Our dancers are at the top of their game and just want to perform for you.
See you next season!

CASANOVA SYNOPSIS
ACT ONE
Opening
In Venice a mass is held at the Convent of Sant Angelo in honor of the new French Ambassador Cardinal de Bernis. Among the church singers and musicians is aspiring priest Giacomo Casanova. In the congregation is Father Balbi who has with him a book of text forbidden by the church. Balbi gives the book to a curious Casanova unseen by the Three Inquisitors present. The mass continues during which the Savorgnan sisters catch Casanova’s eye. As the congregation processes out, believing he is still in possession of the forbidden book, Balbi is accosted by the Three Inquisitors who question him.
Meanwhile, Casanova is teaching music to the Savorgnan sisters who soon seduce him. Finding him in bed with the sisters, the Inquisition arrive and defrock him as the Savorgnans flee. He is left shamed with only his violin and book.
Bragadin’s Masquerade
In the street, Casanova joins a parade of musicians en route to audition for Senator Bragadin who is forming an orchestra for his masquerade ball. Casanova earns a place as does Manon Balletti, a cellist. At the ball the orchestra play behind a screen. Despite the arrival of his guests Bragadin is more interested in Casanova. He flirts with Casanova who rejects his advances and decides to gate-crash the party with Balletti. Caught, Bragadin confronts Casanova who leaves in search of Balletti who has disappeared.
Palazzo Bragadin
Outside, Casanova is set upon by Venetian ruffians who rob him and leave him for dead with only his book. Bragadin appears and takes Casanova home where he dresses him in a rich Venetian dressing gown and tends to his wounds. Casanova begins to respond to his tender advances but they are interrupted when Bragadin suffers a heart attack. Consulting his book, Casanova administers first aid and revives Bragadin twice. Recovered, a grateful Bragadin makes Casanova his heir and presents him as an aristocrat. Casanova’s elevated status does not go unnoticed by the Three Inquisitors.
Thanksgiving Mass
At the Convent of Sant Angelo, a mass is said in celebration of Bragadin’s recovery, presided over by Cardinal de Bernis. As Casanova leaves, a note from M.M. is passed to him. Meanwhile at Il Piombi, under torture to confess who has the forbidden book, Father Balbi gives up Casanova’s name.

Cardinal de Bernis’ Apartment
Following the instructions on the note, Casanova arrives at Cardinal de Bernis’ luxurious private apartments. M.M. arrives and the two share a sensual feast before making love under the hidden gaze of de Bernis. Suddenly they are interrupted by Bragadin who warns Casanova that the Inquisition is coming for him. Desperate, Casanova flees but he is soon caught and imprisoned in Il Piombi.
ACT TWO
Bellino and Henriette
Two women, Bellino and Henriette are leading almost parallel lives. Bellino’s brother persuades her to dress like him so she can work as a singer too. Elsewhere Henriette is subjected to violent abuse by her husband. She dresses as a soldier and flees, leaving her baby. Both women are now ‘men’ in search of freedom.
At the Gaming Table
Courtesans ready themselves for a night at a gaming salon where a poorly dressed man, Casanova, attracts attention as he tells the story of his escape from Il Piombi. A hustler, he makes a little money and moves from table to table advising the players on tactics. Madame de Pompadour arrives and in the corner a group of soldiers sit, including the disguised Henriette who intrigues Casanova but flees when her husband enters. Observing everything, Madame de Pompadour asks Casanova to be brought over where he tells her the story of his escape. Feeling they are kindred spirits she takes him to Versailles, dresses him in grand clothes and becomes his benefactor.
Casanova is now rich, carefree and reckless. He goes from table to table winning and eventually leaves with two ladies of Versailles much to the enjoyment of Madame de Pompadour.
Parties in Paris
Casanova embarks on a series of sexual encounters and decides to throw a party with a groaning table of food. He auditions musicians and amongst them is his old acquaintance Balletti. Bellino too earns a place and Casanova, unknowing of her true gender, is perturbed and intrigued by her. A great party ensues but as it comes to a close, Casanova is left on his own. He picks up a book and begins to work– his life is not just about the sensual, he also has a passion for knowledge.

SYNOPSIS
CASANOVA SYNOPSIS
Casanova’s Apartment
Casanova poses at his desk while an artist paints his portrait. He is determined to be painted seriously and not as a playboy but Madame de Pompadour arrives and laughs at his pretenses. Even more determined, Casanova sends her away and turns to his writing.
Bellino arrives to visit Casanova who shows her his writing and music. She in turn shares the secret that she is a woman and, liberated, Bellino leaves a dejected Casanova. He returns to his writings and works furiously before gathering his papers to take to the printers.
Casanova rushes and bumps into Henriette who is still dressed as a soldier. She soon reveals that she is a woman, telling her tragic story. Casanova takes her in, cares for her and they make love. Madame de Pompadour arrives; she has arranged a meeting between Casanova and Voltaire. Knowing he is hiding someone, she assumes it is a woman, but Henriette appears once more dressed as a soldier and an amused Madame de Pompadour leaves with Voltaire. Casanova redresses Henriette as a woman and begs her to wait for him. He rushes off after Voltaire to whom he confidently explains his theory of cubic geometry, only to be mocked.
Despair
In Casanova’s absence Henriette’s husband arrives and convinces her to leave with him. Casanova returns to his apartment and finds Henriette has gone with only a letter left behind. Despondent, he attempts to escape into the world of sensuality. He eats, drinks and organizes musicians to return where a party begins and soon evolves into an orgy of sexual abandon.
Casanova tries to lose himself in sex until Henriette unexpectedly returns. Seeing in front of her everything she feared about the corruption of men, she throws Casanova’s book and quill at him and leaves forever.
Desperate, Casanova tries once more to lose himself in sex but is distracted by visions of his past selves and lovers. He goes to throw himself into the abyss but can’t quite do it.
The Writer
A single page flutters down and Casanova gathers this along with the book and quill thrown by Henriette. His past selves and lovers all have pages to offer him which he gathers together as the characters of his life dance in his mind.
Rescued by his writing, he works alone, his memories recorded before they are lost to history.

ORLANDO BALLET ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
JORDEN MORRIS
Artistic
Director
The obvious transition for a professional ballet dancer after a performance career, is teaching and choreography. After retiring from the stage, Jorden Morris followed an academic path that included studying teaching and choreography at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) and later dance and theatre arts at New York University. Morris focused on early French choreography and pedagogy by training with Claude Bessy and Serge Golovine at the prestigious Paris Opera, and continued his studies with Russian masters Sergei Berejnoi and Tatiana Terekhova at Boston Ballet.
Morris’ elite training steered his trajectory toward artistic leadership and choreography at the RWB where he premiered his first work – a one-act interpretation of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers.
In 1999, he joined Boston Ballet’s artistic staff and thrived working with choreographers Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Chris Wheeldon and Rudi Van Dantzig. There, he choreographed two pieces for Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Canada. Ultimately, Morris became Chief Ballet Master, lighting a route for his return to Canada as demand for his creativity grew.
From 2002 to 2013, Morris served as RWB’s associate school director and was commissioned to create his first, full-length production –the charming and whimsical Peter Pan, which premiered in 2006, to become the company’s bestselling production, surpassed three years later by Morris’ own Moulin Rouge® the Ballet, whose debut was so grand that performances had to be added.
Never content to work on just one thing, in 2002 Morris directed and choreographed Head Start/ Feet First, a collaboration between the RWB and four intercity academic schools, which transformed Canada’s popular children’s television show, “The Toy Castle.” Repurposing the program as an interactive performance with a live host and interactive dance for pre-school children, Morris also starred in the series.
The RWB later premiered two other new works by Morris - The Doorway, set to the music, poetry and voice of Leonard Cohen; and MOA, a work inspired by the artist Egon Schiele.
Meanwhile, in 2013/2014, Moulin Rouge® the Ballet returned to Canada after a successful world tour before 240,000 people throughout North America and Europe, inspiring Morris to translate his live dance production into a feature film. The sweeping romance later toured through China, Europe and again in the US while Peter Pan was being performed by the RWB, Pittsburgh Ballet and Nevada Ballet Theatre.
While Morris’ creations traveled, he was serving as Artistic Director of Edmonton’s Citie Ballet where he premiered more new work, including Ophelia and Mozart 42 and Jacinto and Tierra. He also choreographed Turas and Bach to Bach. While in Edmonton, Morris held another title, that of Senior Creative Director with Canada’s Shumka Ukrainian Dance company.
In 2019, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre premiered The Great Gatsby, Morris’ new glamorous epic ballet with an original score by composer Carl Davis. Soon after, Morris came to Orlando Ballet in 2020 as Artist in Residence and where he staged his trio of grand ballets. In 2021 he became the ballet’s Artistic Director. In 2023, Morris debuted his newest creation, a completely reimagined and newly choreographed production of The Nutcracker, a highlight of Orlando Ballet’s 50th anniversary season.

KERRY MUZZEY
Music
Kerry Muzzey is a film and modern classical composer whose music can be heard on the stage as well as the big and small screens: most recently in the orchestral score for the new television version of Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility.
Kerry is also thrilled to have just released the complete symphonic score to the ballet Casanova, recorded in Budapest in the summer of 2023 with the Budapest Art Orchestra (The Queen’s Gambit, Shadow & Bone), and released in November on all streaming services and in a deluxe 2-CD set through Amazon. His past scores include the soon-to-be-released documentary “Studio One Forever,” which takes a look back at the now-demolished legendary gay disco through the eyes of some of its original patrons who survived the AIDS epidemic; the documentary “Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry” from executive producers Robert Redford and Terrence Malick and producer Nick Offerman; “Hole in the Paper Sky,” the first film from Jessica Biel’s production company Iron Ocean Films; and “To Russia With Love,” the Sundance Films documentary executive-produced by Oscar nominee Howard Gertler of “How to Survive a Plague.” But this mostly-orchestral composer is probably best known for a quiet little piano piece called Looking Back that found its way into the hit TV series “GLEE” as a recurring love theme for the show’s two most beloved couples, Rachel & Finn and Will & Emma. Kerry’s music also found its way to #1 on the iTunes and Amazon charts after his pieces Architect of the Mind and Bernini’s Angels were choreographed and performed on the show “So You Think You Can Dance.”
In 2014, Kerry recorded a collection of works for string orchestra called The Architect. The album was recorded in the legendary Lyndhurst Hall at London’s AIR Studios by the Chamber Orchestra of London, and debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard Classical Chart and the Billboard Contemporary Classical Chart. This album would later become the musical foundation for Kenneth Tindall’s ballet Casanova.

WELCOME TO THE DR. PHILLIPS CENTER
GRAB A DRINK, GRAB A SNACK
• Pop by the bars on tiers 1, 3, or 4 for a range of food and drinks–including delicious culinary offerings created by our in-house chef. Bar service starts one and a half hours before shows. You can also preorder drinks for intermission.
• On tier 2, you can visit Crafts on 2 and enjoy local craft beer, wine, cocktails, and Foxtail Coffee. Beverages in the auditorium are allowed if they are purchased in the Dr. Phillips Center. Please enjoy your food before taking your seat.
FEEL AT HOME
• Restrooms are available on each tier, and all are wheelchair accessible. Elevators reach all tiers of the theater. One elevator is on the north side of the Harvey & Carol Massey Family Grand Staircase and two are on the south side.
• Applause is welcome! The dancers love to know if you’re enjoying the performance, so don’t be afraid to applaud after a dancer does something spectacular onstage, when the dancers take a bow, or at the end of the ballet.
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
• We all want to enjoy the performance. Please refrain from talking or whispering during the performance. Help keep an unobstructed view by arriving on time and being seated before the performance starts, and by not leaning forward or resting your head on your seatmate’s head or shoulder.
NEED SOME HELP?
• Ticket services are available through the Dr. Phillips Center Box Office Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Saturday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., or two hours before showtime. Visit drphillipscenter.org or call 407-358-6603.
• Subscriber services are available through the Orlando Ballet Box Office Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit orlandoballet.org or call 407-418-9828.
• Lost and found is located at the concierge desk behind the Harvey & Carol Massey Family Grand Staircase in Della Phillips Grand Lobby.
IMPORTANT POLICIES
• Late seating isn’t allowed while a performance is in progress. You’ll be asked to stand until a break, at the discretion of house management, which may be at intermission. Guests can watch a live stream of the performance from monitors in the Della Phillips Grand Lobby until entry is permitted. Guests can freely leave and re-enter the performance at any time during our Family & Sensory-Friendly performances.
• Occupying a seat other than the seat for which you hold a ticket isn’t allowed. Please sit only in your ticketed seat.
• Audio/visual recordings of any kind of the performance are strictly forbidden.
• Mobile devices should be turned off and put away before the performance. The lights and sounds are a distraction to the performers and your fellow patrons.
ANAMARIE MCGINN
Anamarie McGinn has been dancing almost her entire life, beginning with lessons at age three. Now, after 19 seasons with Orlando Ballet, she will take her final bow in this season’s closing performance of Casanova, A Kenneth Tindall Ballet with music by Kerry Muzzey.
Originally intent on a musical theater career, Anamarie changed course around age 17 after she took a ballet class with legendary teacher David Howard.
She has enjoyed a range of professional highlights including working with Orlando Ballet’s former Artistic Director the late Fernando Bujones, and choreographers Val Caniporoli, Jessica Lang and Stephanie Martinez. Of the many performances she has been a part of, some of her favorite roles include Mina in Michael Pink’s Dracula, Stella in Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s A Streetcar Named Desire and Myrtle in Orlando Ballet Artistic Director Jorden Morris’ The Great Gatsby.
We wish her all the best as she takes her final bow with Orlando Ballet.
Anamarie dedicates her final performance in special memory of her Grandmother.

Please help us to continue bringing innovative live performances to the stage, educating students of all ages and abilities at Orlando Ballet School, and introducing the art of dance to under-resourced communities throughout Central Florida for the next 50 years and beyond by supporting Orlando Ballet through the United Arts Collaborative Campaign for the Arts.
