Wandering across land and sea Mike and Susan Anderson are not your typical retired couple. We realised this soon after they brought their aptly named 45ft timber cruiser ‘Wanderer’ in for maintenance way back in 2006. We continue to delight in their adventure tales from both the land and sea… While Susan wasn’t really into boats before she met Mike, it wouldn’t be too long before she too would be hooked given that to Mike; a timber boat is as natural as drinking water. “I was born into boats,” says Mike, “I had my first birthday at Dux at Straddie! My father owned boats, his father owned boats, we have always had timber boats. It’s a labour of love. It’s not hard work to me, it’s enjoyment.”

When this audacious couple aren’t spending their retirement cruising around the Great Barrier Reef in their timber boat, they’re exploring Europe… on foot! “We are wanderers! We retired in 2000. We were just getting better after both being quite ill when I saw an ad in the paper for an overseas walk. We were driven to do it, so we took up long distance walking,” says Susan. Long distance walking means nothing less than 100 miles at a time. Susan and Mike started with the Thames path, following the infamous river from its source in Gloucestershire, to London, a stretch of 296 km. “It was a huge achievement for me to finish that walk,” says Susan. “Since then we’ve been around Europe, along the Compostela, through

Good communication between crew and the skipper will ensure docking your vessel is carried out safely, efficiently and in a relaxed manner. Swearing and cursing from somewhere down the other end of the marina is a sure sign of this manoeuvre going horribly wrong, an all too familiar sign at times. Berthing your vessel or docking is another example where knowing the correct procedures will save an enormous amount of confusion and frustration between skipper and crew. How you approach the berth and the order in which mooring lines are passed ashore is entirely dependant on the Skipper, and could change with different circumstances and vessels. There are however, some general rules that will assist this process: Fenders will always be a must. Manning the store
Wandering across land and sea continued from front cover... Their most recent adventure, however, has been closer to home with the complete refit of a 34 ft version of Wanderer, currently ‘Jenny Ann’, soon to be renamed ‘Little Wanderer’. “This is our first huge project on a boat. It’s spent five weeks on the hardstand. It now has a brand new John Deere engine, a new gearbox and fuel tanks. We’re basically renewing the whole boat,” says Mike, adding, “the furniture and electronics go in next.” Once ‘Little Wanderer’ is finished, and they aren’t planning a long distance walk, the Andersons will head towards the Whitsundays, or further north. “We’ll go back to the Whitsundays and spend five months on the boat there. If we decide to go to Cape York and into the Gulf of Carpenteria, we’ll do that over 12 months,” says Mike smiling, “We take our time and enjoy ourselves.”
We have our timber boat maintained at ‘The Boat Works’, (we think the new name is tremendous!) because from booking in, lifting and going back into the water, we receive firstclass treatment. The girls at Reception are a joy; the men lifting the boat are competent and careful with our timber boat. They know their machinery, and it is kept in excellent condition and they know how to use it. Throughout our time on the hardstand, everybody at ‘The Boat Works’ was like family. It is a joy to hardstand the boat at ‘The Boat Works’.
To the Boat Works Supplies Shop. We welcome new Store Manager, John Lance, who has a rich past-life in, under, and around boats, from 35 metre cats in Cairns to 150ft super yachts in the USA and on the Mediterranean. By 18, John was a Captain running the commercial cats and wavepiercers carrying 300 people to and from the Great Barrier Reef. “I’d drive the ferries for eight to ten months of the year then leave the job to go fishing. They were good old days, catching thousand pounders out of Cairns for movie stars like Lee Marvin and Wilbur Smith,” John says smiling.

In the meantime, Sue and Mike will busy themselves in training with kettlebell workouts and some 500 km of walking back and forth around the Gold Coast and Brisbane in their full kit for their next adventure. Come March they’ll depart for eight months in Europe with a plan to complete the Via Francigena, a lesserknown ancient road that runs from Canterbury Cathedral in England to Rome, over the next two years. A 2000 km trek. “I have a dream to walk into Rome in my 70th year, which is in two years’ time, so we’ll complete the first 1,200 km next year, then pick up in Vercelli, in northern Italy, where we left off in the previous year to walk to Rome,” says Mike.
After a brief absence from the marine industry, where John returned to Australia and settled into family life, he was back admiring boats as a Straddle Carrier Operator for a local shipyard, which soon led to acquiring his current position.

The Boat Works has experienced dynamic change this year, including an increase of offerings through new specialist tenants such as spray painters, engineering, electrical, marine airconditioning and electronics. Significant demand encouraged the current upgrade of the boat ramp, which will allow the yard to cater to the growing market.
“I know a lot of the tradies around here, thanks to my experience locally, and I’ve learnt that Tim had a great rapport with the customers here, and what he has done in setting up the shop is fantastic. I want to continue on that path, focusing on expanding the range that we carry in the shop and helping everyone from the DIY customer to the full blown professionals accessing products to do the job at hand.”

John highlights one particular product that every DIY boatie should know about… “A lot of DIYers can’t purchase PropSpeed as an applicator’s licence is required to do so. However, a Clean-A-Boat product that we have on the shelves here allows DIY application and does just as good a job. The Clean-A-Prop Armor-Kote is quite an advanced bio-antifouling system that comes at a reasonable price.
The installation of the Refit Shed screen enclosure in December, provides an efficient and contained environment for spray-painting and long-term refits. About that time, computers were taking off and John took an interest, he became a Microsoft Systems Engineer. and Repairer. “It’s something I really enjoyed. I saw the opportunity and didn’t want to live at sea my whole life.”
A year of change: Reflection & looking ahead
In the year ahead, we aim to offer better security and increased refit enclosures, and more versatile cradle systems. We also look forward attending industry events as a collective group with our marine specialist tenants.
On meeting him, you’ll immediately pick up that John is an old hand, and his experience spans from Northern QLD to the US and the Med. “I converted my QLD class 3 to an AMSA class 3 and worked as Captain on a 120ft private motoryacht in the States. From there, I worked as a Mate on a 45 metre converted North Sea trawler in the Mediterranean. It had a disco, helicopter landing pad and I met people like David Beckham. After a while I sailed back across the Atlantic to the States.”
John encourages local boaties to take advantage of the experience and knowledge on offer at the shop. “For boats in the yard, if you come in and say, ‘it’s my first time antifouling, I don’t really know what I’m doing’, with just one call we can have a professional paint representative down here to visit you. At no charge to you, they will draw up a specification for your boat, measure it, and tell you exactly what product meets your needs, what quantities you need to do it, and how to apply it properly. It’s a massive advantage.”

Chasing perfection in a rare profession Last November, Russell Salisbury did something he’d never done before… he took a break… a real break. He stepped away from his thriving business, managing several staff and massive overheads, and took onboard the less stressful task of looking after a private companies’ fleet. It was a big change for Russell, who has been tending to wooden boats with traditional technique, since he left school at age 15. “After 25 years, I needed to step back for a while. I needed something new and different. The change has provided me with a new focus, which revolves around my core clientele, some of who I have known for over 20 years,” says Russell.
A towering task for no other Levante’s mast towers 28 metres above the 67 foot Lagoon Catamaran. Named after the east wind in the Mediterranean Sea, this luxury vessel demands attention, be it cruising the Greek Islands or travelling up our own Coomera River. Earlier in the year, Skipper Thierry Houdemond navigated the careful course to The Boat Works for a major refit in preparation for sale, as her European owner eagerly awaited a newer model. Getting Levante out of the water was no simple feat. First the mast had to be removed, then the catwalk, and the fore-beam, to begin the process of pulling her out with the Sealift. “Levante has such a wide beam, at 10.7 metres, it was difficult to find somewhere to do the refit because of the beam restrictions. That’s why we came to the Boat Works. It was a major project. The mast and rigging had to come off by crane weighing some 1.8 tonne,” says Thierry.

“I worked there for 21 years. When Gary retired five years ago, I virtually took over the business and moved it to The Boat Works. The name is the only change that occurred to the business. We’ve stayed true to our quality servicing of timber boats,” says Russell.

“Now that I have had my 12 months of release, I am excited to be here again for my clients, and focus directly on their boats. I am bringing my specialist timber equipment out of storage,” he says.
“It’s a great family boat,” says Thierry, who has spent the over 13 months in charge of the vessel. “The design is very well laid out and comfortable. It has lots of space including three classic cabins and another cabin with three single berths for the children.”

Before heading out As a skipper, it’s your obligation to ensure everyone onboard is safe at all times, that means heading out in a seaworthy vessel to start off with. Regular maintenance of your boat can prevent trip headaches like breaking down. Know enough about your boat so you can troubleshoot any problem that may occur when you are onboard. Store necessary tools onboard. It could be a simple fix.
The process went smoothly and, once out of the water, the yard provided a lockable refit shed large enough for the next big job to begin. The refit included repainting and antifouling of the hulls, repainting the mast and front beams, and new teak decks as well as interior detailing as performed by the crew.

Russell Marine specialises in the upkeep of timber boats, in particular varnishing and painting, utilising old-fashion methods of single pack application. It’s a rare profession, one that Russell started as an apprentice at Gary Doornbos Holdings, Runaway Bay, which became one of the largest timber boatbuilding yards on the Gold Coast.
The Boat Works’ Operations Manager, Shane Subichin, agrees it was no straight forward lift, “A lot of logistics were involved to get the boat out of the water. The whole process was tide-reliant and we had to remove significant parts of Levante before putting the Sealift into action. Nothing we can’t handle though.”
During Levante’s six years of sailing, she has circumnavigated the world twice, and for the third time returned to the Pacific. Piracy fears have prevented her from going further west. On her way south, her owners

Check the weather forecast before leaving home. Don’t attempt to brave the elements. Clear skies and low winds promise a comfortable journey. The Bureau of
Meteorology is your best bet for an accurate forecast, visit www.bom.gov.au. Make sure you log your trip with your local volunteer marine rescue (VMR) group. Provide your vessel name, registration details, number of persons onboard, departure point and time, intended destination and estimated time of return. Keep the VMR number in a mobile phone that goes onboard with you and have an action plan ready in the case of an emergency. Make sure to give the volunteers a call to let them know once you are back on dry land.
Getting in the water When loading your boat, distribute the weight onboard efficiently for maximum stability. Place heavy items low in the middle of the boat. Passengers should be evenly seated around the boat.
There are more boats on the water at this time of year than any other, so maintain your situational awareness at all times. Also keep an eye on the weather conditions. If you are concerned about possible changes, call your relevant weather service for an update.

Securing your vessel Smooth berthing depends on preparation and any last minute running around just as you are approaching the marina will only add to the frustration and can cause confusion that may lead to damage. Don’t leave the vessel; you should be able to berth successfully without making a “leap of faith” from the safety of the deck to the marina. If a mooring lines happen to drop into the water, retrieve it as soon as you can so that it doesn’t foul the propeller or thruster.

Stand out of the way of the skipper’s line of vision when approaching the berth. Upon securing the vessel to the cleat or bollard pass the line around the base of the cleat with one round turn; then follow up with figure eights around the horns of the cleat.
