Inside Texas Democrats’ Plan to Seek Refuge with Illinois Governor. J.b. Pritzker
By Hannah Knowles
Texas Democrats knew that if they fled the state to block a Republican plan to redraw the congressional map, they would need blue-state allies. So when Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker — a potential 2028 presidential candidate — came to neighboring Oklahoma in late June for a dinner, the state party chair worked to set up a meeting.
Pritzker had been traveling the country urging his party to fight President Donald Trump harder, denouncing “incrementalism” and “do-nothing” Democrats. Texas Democrats wanted to know if he would help them ratchet up their resistance, if necessary, to prevent their Republican colleagues from overhauling the map in the GOP’s favor. They were welcome in Illinois, Pritzker told them.
Soon his staff was talking daily with Texas Democrats.

And early this week, he stood next to state lawmakers as they explained their escape to Chicago, assembled in front
of a “JB” backdrop advertising Pritzker’s reelection campaign.
“This is a righteous act
of courage,” Pritzker said.
“When you show people that you have the will to fight, well, they can muster the will
to fight, too.”
Pritzker’s invitation to Texas lawmakers has given him a more prominent role in a tense partisan fight ambitious Democrats around the country are eagerly joining. Blue state leaders and potential 2028 presidential hopefuls across the country are channeling a base that expects them to jump into the confrontation and fight fire with fire.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has said he supports asking voters to approve a temporary redraw of his state’s House districts meant to counteract Republican gains in Texas. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) — who is facing a primary challenge and needs to fire up Democratic voters — welcomed a smaller group of Texas lawmakers to her state this week and on Monday said “the gloves are off” and
the party was “at war” as her Democratic-controlled state looks for ways to change its maps, too. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg went live on Instagram to denounce what he called an “obvious plan to disempower voters.”
Democrats face big hurdles in carving out more blue seats, especially after years of pushing for a more bipartisan mapmaking process in key states. But they have vowed to get creative. In Illinois, they are limited in their ability to squeeze more seats out of a map already drawn in their favor. They hold 14 out of 17 House seats. But Pritzker has still taken a highly visible role in the redistricting wars this week.
Republicans in Illinois have called Pritzker’s criticism of Texas Republicans hypocriti-
Texas Democrats Flee to Illinois to Block Redistricting Vote
Texas Democrats, led by Representative James Talarico, have left the state to deny Republicans the quorum needed to redraw the state's 38 congressional districts. This move aims to protect the Democrats' interests and block the Republican-led redistricting plan, which could yield up to five additional House Republicans
The Democrats oppose the plan, citing concerns about gerrymandering and the potential impact on the 2026 elections. They argue that the mid-cycle redistricting is an attempt to rig the elections and gain an unfair advantage. Several Texas Democrats have headed to Illinois. This move is seen as a strategic at-

In Fort Worth’s 76104 zip code, life expectancy is the lowest in Texas—just 67 years. For Black men, it drops to 64. High blood pressure, heart disease, premature death, infant mortality, and chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes among women are driving this public health crisis. Thanks to a generous donation from Midwest Food Bank, Skills City, USA— in collaboration with New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and Workforce
Solutions for Tarrant County—has launched The Beets Project, a social entrepreneurship initiative designed to “beet the odds.” Skills City, USA is a workforce innovation hub rooted in Fort Worth’s 76104 community. It equips residents with practical training in fields like specialty coffee entrepreneurship, film production, and communitybased business development, all while addressing the social and economic barriers that contribute to poor health

outcomes. By linking education, faith, and workforce solutions, Skills City provides a model for how communities can create pathways to both economic mobility and better health.

tempt to break quorum and prevent the redistricting plan from moving forward. If the redistricting plan succeeds, Republicans could gain up to five additional seats in the House of Representatives, further solidifying their majority. However, redistricting experts warn that squeezing too many seats out of what is already
considered a significantly skewed map could backfire. President Donald Trump, has championed the redistricting plan, expecting it to yield additional House Republicans.
Governor Greg Abbott, has not commented on the Democrats' move, but the Republican-dominated legislature is pushing for the redistricting plan.
FWPD Records Overall Crime Decrease of 14.3% In Q2
In its second quarter crime report, the Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) reported a 14.3% reduction in overall crime with 12,392 offenses compared to 14,456 offenses in the same timeframe in 2024. Crimes against persons decreased 16.3%, crimes against property decreased 14.1%, and crimes against society decreased 8.2%.
Crime prevention strategies commanders in each patrol division take preventative steps to address increased crime such as aggravated assaults, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts. All patrol divisions have strategic operating funds (SOF) used to address crime in their areas. Commanders work with the Real Time Crime Center, crime analysts and Neighborhood Police Officers (NPOs) to identify emerging trends and hotspot areas.
Commanders track previous crime trends and assign officers to prevent crime from occurring. They are in constant collaboration with other units in the department, including Gang, Narcotics, Vice, Homicide, Robbery, and Family Violence, to reduce and solve crime.
#FortWorthSafe
In 2021, FWPD introduced the #FortWorthSafe Initiative which is a crime reduction strategy focused on violent crimes -- homicide, robbery, shootings and aggravated assault. Goals and objectives of #FortWorthSafe include:
Decrease overall violent crime in the City by 10% within 12 months.
Focus on decreasing homicides, aggravated assaults and robberies.
• Improve neighborhood conditions in areas experiencing the most violent crime.
• Improve police-community relations and communication.
FWPD’s homicide prevention strategies involve various partnerships. NPOs, the Victim Assistance Section and One Safe Place provide outreach services to prevent domestic violence crimes that have the potential to turn into a homicide. In addition, the Homicide Unit works closely with the Crime Lab to address violent offenses and continues to work with members of the Gang, Narcotics and Robbery Units where other criminal activity may elevate to homicide.
Crime reporting methodology
Fort Worth has used the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) methodology for crime reports since 2006. NIBRS compiles detailed reports on two types of crime offenses: Group A offenses and Group B offenses. The groupings are based on the amount of reporting required for each.
The following criteria are used to determine whether a crime should be designated as a Group A offense:

Fast and Easy Ways to Improve Your Credit Within Months

Whether you’re planning to buy a car, secure a mortgage, or apply for a new credit card, improving your credit score in advance can save you thousands in interest and open more doors when it’s time to make that purchase. The good news? You don’t need years to see progress. With a few smart strategies, you can start seeing results in just a few months.
Here’s 5 tips to get you started:
1. Pay Bills on Time, Every Time: If there’s one thing that credit scoring models (like FICO) care most about, it’s your payment history. This factor makes up a whopping 35% of your score.
Missed or late payments, even just one can stick to your credit report for up to seven years. And if a bill is left unpaid long enough, it could be sent to collections, which drags your score down even more.
Pro Tip: Set up automatic payments or calendar alerts for credit cards, utilities, and loans to stay on top of your due dates.
2. Lower Your Credit Utilization: The second most important factor is your credit utilization rate, which makes up 30% of your score. This is the percentage of your available credit you’re actually using.
A good rule of thumb? Keep your balances below 30% of your credit limit on each card and ideally even lower. If you can pay off your credit cards in full each month, that’s even better!
3. Ask for a Credit Limit Increase: Raising your credit limit can help you improve your credit utilization ratio as long as you don’t increase your spending. For example, if your credit limit doubles but your balance stays the same, your utilization goes down.
You can request a credit limit increase from your card issuer or consider applying for a new card. Just be sure to use any new credit wisely and pay it off in full each month.
4. Keep Older Accounts

cal because of the Democratic slant in Illinois’ map. The Princeton Gerrymandering Project, an independent analysis of partisan bias in states’ maps, gives Illinois an “F.” Democrats in the state “should be focused on strengthening democracy here in our state with fair maps instead of chasing national headlines by intervening in other states,” said John Curran, the Illinois Senate Republican leader, in a statement.
Pritzker has said Illinois’ map “follows the Constitution” and accused Republicans of attempting to “steal” seats with an unusual move to redraw their districts ahead of schedule. Joining Texas Democrats for another news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker called them “heroes in the battle to save our democracy.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has asked state authorities to arrest the Democrats for their absence and threatened other legal consequences. He said he ordered the Texas Rang-
ers to investigate any “potential legal violations connected to their refusal to appear” and that the inquiry should “extend to anyone who aided or abetted such potential crimes.”
Pritzker, a billionaire businessman, told reporters he has provided logistical support but is not funding the Texas Democrats. “Though I am not reticent to do that,” the Illinois governor said Tuesday.
Pritzker is running for a third term as governor but has also suggested interest in a possible 2028 presidential run with moves to build his national profile. He’s spoken at Democratic Party dinners in several other states in recent months, including in the early primary state of New Hampshire, a common stop for presidential hopefuls.
As Democrats debate how to best push back in Trump’s second term, Pritzker has urged the party to get more combative, reflecting the anger of a frustrated liberal base. Assailing Republicans in

“That is what Americans are looking for right now,” she said in a Monday interview. “They want to see a real fighter, someone who’s not going to just go along to get along.”
Democratic lawmakers in Texas say they are also channeling voters’ desire for action, even as it’s unclear how long they can hold off Republicans’ special session by denying them the quorum needed to proceed. (If they run out the clock on the current special session, Abbott can call another one).
“People want somebody to push back and say, look you

guys have gone too far,” said state Rep. Ann Johnson, one of the Texas Democrats in Illinois. “People are desperate for the act that we are doing.”
The plans for their flight from Texas were closely held until this weekend. Democratic leadership told lawmakers to gather on Sunday, Johnson said, and they got on a bus and then on a plane. But Johnson said she did not know her final destination until just before leaving.
Kendall Scudder, the chair of the Texas Democratic Party, said in an interview that he connected with Pritzker because he saw the governor would be speaking at a party dinner in Oklahoma on June 28 and requested a meeting. Scudder spoke with Pritzker at the event about lawmakers’ possible need to flee the state and said he found the gover-
nor to be receptive.
A couple weeks ago, Texas House Minority Leader Gene Wu and other lawmakers flew to Chicago to meet with Pritzker. Then, last week, with about 48 hours notice, Texas Democrats confirmed to Pritzker’s team they were going forward. The governor’s team is not paying for their stay but helped with logistics, officials and other people familiar with the planning said, working to coordinate hotels

Lenders love to see longstanding credit relationships. The longer your accounts have been open and in good standing, the better your score will look.
5. Limit New Credit Inquiries: Applying for multiple credit cards or loans in a short period can cause your score to dip slightly due to hard inquiries, which account for 10% of your score. If you’re shopping for a loan or new card, try to submit applications within a 30day window. Credit scoring models tend to group inquiries made in a short timeframe

Pritzker has left open the possibility of Democrats in Illinois trying their hand at redistricting, too.

Trump’s DOJ Targets Obama While New Poll Leaves Him Humiliated
By Stacy M. Brown BlackPressUSA.com Senior National Correspondent@ StacyBrownMedia
Donald Trump’s fixation on former President Barack Obama has long bordered on obsessive. Now, it’s official government policy. Trump’s Justice Department has launched a federal grand jury investigation targeting former Obama administration officials—an apparent political hit job tied to Trump’s longstanding false claims that Obama and his team “manufactured” the Russia investigation to sabotage his presidency. Many have opined that Trump ran for president not to save the country, but to save himself. After being convicted on 34 felony counts, found liable for sexual assault, and held civilly responsible for massive business fraud, Trump launched his 2024 campaign under legal siege. And it worked—he’s once again in the Oval Office.
Now, he’s going after the one man he’s despised more than anyone else: Obama.
Backed by a Supreme Court ruling that grants him immunity for “official acts,” Trump has unleashed his Justice Department to investigate Obama-era officials in what critics say is a dangerous political revenge plot. Attorney General Pam Bondi has convened a federal grand jury to examine whether former CIA Director John Brennan, FBI Director James Comey, and Director of National Intelligence

James Clapper conspired to fabricate the Trump-Russia scandal. But Trump hasn’t stopped at the officials. He’s now publicly named Obama, accusing him of treason and demanding criminal prosecution. “Look, he’s guilty. It’s not a question,” Trump declared from the Oval Office. “This was treason. It’s time to go after people”.
Obama’s team responded forcefully: “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction”.
But the distractions may be a cover for something far more sinister. Trump has reportedly posted memes depicting Obama behind bars. He’s shared edited videos suggesting Obama should be jailed. Even once posting an AI doctored video of Obama on his knees before Trump, who has openly fantasized about imprisoning his predecessor. he’s willing to respect, the fear is no longer hypothetical: Barack Obama could become the first former U.S. president to be criminally targeted by his successor, not for crimes, but for political vengeance.
And here’s what might hurt Trump the most: a new national poll shows that in a hypothetical 2028 matchup, Obama would beat him handily. A survey by Daily Mail and J.L. Partners found Obama leading Trump 52% to 41%, well beyond the margin of error. Obama dominates across key demographics, winning 73% of Hispanic voters, 68% of Black voters, and 50% of independents. No other Democrat fares as well. Trump narrowly defeats both Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton in similar hypothetical matchups. But when it comes to Obama, Trump loses—and he knows it.
That may explain why Trump continues to float extra-constitutional schemes.

Just recently, ex-Vice President Kamala Harris stated that she is not running for governor of California because the political system is broken. I not only see the political system as broken, but our federal government as BROKEN. It does not take a rocket scientist to tell us that when our court system makes it possible for a convict, a criminal, to be elected to the presidency of the United States of America and receive no time as punishment for his crime and that same court system continues to give him power to deescalate various départements of the federal government while at the same time slashing funds needed to keep America a strong country, there is no other answer than saying that our government is broken. Our government is really broken when Congress and especially the Senate, backs all of the demands of the President. Yet when those opposed to his plans speak out, they are literally told to “Go to Hell!” From where I stand, our government has already gone to Hell!

It is not really funny that Scotland had a rejoicing party after Mr. Trump left that country. They were happy to see him LEAVE!

Despite the 22nd Amendment’s two-term limit, Trump told NBC News in March he was “not joking” about seeking a third term. “There are methods which you could do it,” he said, pointing to Vice President JD Vance potentially running and handing the
presidency back to him. His allies are on board. Rep. Andy Ogles has introduced legislation to remove presidential term limits. Steve Bannon predicted Trump “will run and win again in 2028.”
And the White House posted a meme of Trump wearing a crown with the caption “LONG LIVE THE KING.”
Trump’s obsession with Obama has always been racial and personal. He launched his political career by pushing the false “birther” conspiracy.
According to his former fixer, Michael Cohen, Trump’s hatred is “purely racial… solely predicated on the fact that Barack Obama is Black.” He once paid an Obama impersonator to mock and fire him on video, Cohen stated earlier. Now, with the power of the presidency behind him and a legal system twisted to serve
his ambitions, Trump appears ready to do what dictators do: jail his predecessor. Obama has never indicated any interest in running again. But with Trump trying to imprison him, and a poll showing the public still firmly in Obama’s corner, the former president may face a future where running isn’t about returning to power—it’s about protecting himself from a political predator who believes he’s above the law. “He’s not running to help the country,” former Republican Rep. Will Hurd said of Trump in 2024. “He’s running for president to stay out of prison”. And if Trump can run to avoid prison, Obama may have to run to avoid being put in one. “These claims are outrageous,” Obama’s spokesperson said. “And a weak attempt at distraction.”

Our Bodies Belong to God
Romans 12:1–21; 1 Corinthians 6:12–20
Key Text: What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
—1 Corinthians 6:19
Introduction: Bodies Joined and Torn
. My best friend from the first day of high school was Tony. We shared a vibrant faith. We led Bible studies together and even started a band. His father was the minister of a large church in our area and a highly respected member of the community.
The summer before our senior year, Tony’s personality began to shift. He became sullen and isolated. He abruptly quit the band, stopped attending our Bible studies, and didn’t return my calls. After weeks of being avoided, I drove to his house. His father answered the door. A woman stood next to him, with her hand on his shoulder. She was not Tony’s mother. I was told that Tony was staying with his mother. Tony’s dad quickly gave me the address and shut the door.
I went to the apartment building where Tony, his mother, and his siblings had moved. Tony answered my knock on the door. When he saw me, he burst into tears and threw himself into my arms. I held him as he cried. We sat at the kitchen table, and he told me everything. His father had met another woman online, invited her to live with him, and asked for a divorce from Tony’s mother. The children had sided with their mom, so their father told them all to leave.
For momentary pleasures, this man had destroyed his marriage, ruined his relationship with his children, and lost the goodwill of his church and the wider community. Though joined to his wife as one flesh, he had torn them apart.
We’re now in our second lesson from 1 Corinthians, so the Lesson Context from last week’s study also applies here. The difference is that today’s lesson deals with the touchy subject of sexual immorality. For proper context, we need to be aware of how the standards of morality in the Greco-Roman culture of the first century AD differed from those of today.
One such difference was in how prostitution was viewed. In most American and Canadian cities today, prostitution is seen as illegal. However, the culture of the Mediterranean world of the first century did not see it this way. Expectations regarding marital fidelity were more for the wife than the husband—a double standard. Public parties might include prostitutes to entertain the men after the wives were excused from the banquet. The majority culture of the day considered this behavior acceptable.
Shockingly, some mem-
bers of the church at Corinth were engaging in illicit sexual activities that even the pagan Gentiles disapproved of (1 Corinthians 5:1)! Paul would not stand for this, for he saw sexual sin as a threat to the unity and purity of the entire body of Christ. By contrast, Paul taught a different view of what constituted sexual immorality—today’s lesson.
I. Consecrated Bodies (1 Corinthians 6:12–16)
Controlling (vv. 12–14)
All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient.
Readers have long puzzled over the coherence of some of Paul’s claims, such as we see here. How could he claim that all things are lawful unto me, including (by implication) sexual immorality? (The fact that Paul addresses this immorality becomes apparent as the text progresses.)
To resolve this tension, many commentators have concluded that Paul was quoting back to the Corinthians a slogan that they were using to justify their actions. This makes sense, as the quotation served to set up his corrective response. New Testament scholar Jay Smith proposes several telltale indicators that a slogan is in view, and we can summarize four of them here. Slogans (1) are brief, pithy statements usually in the present tense, (2) are often repeated, (3) feature wording that is inconsistent with the way Paul usually writes, and (4) are followed by a counterpoint. There are three such possibilities in our lesson text of 1 Corinthians 6:12–20, and this is the first.
In this reading, Paul offers two reasons why certain acts do not lie within the Corinthians’ freedom. First, not all behaviors are expedient. Considering all points lead us to contemplate whether something is advantageous or not. To sin is never to our advantage. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
Some behaviors can enslave a person as he or she is brought under its power. This is particularly the case with sexual desires, which Jew and Gentile alike understood as involving powerful emotions that could overwhelm reason and subvert one’s self-control. Paul addresses the addictive, enslaving power of sin more fully in Romans 6:16–7:6.
Passages such as Galatians 2:15–16 indicate that the slogan all things are lawful for me, now quoted a second time, may have had its roots in the teachings of Paul himself as he has proclaimed freedom in Christ. But apparently, some had distorted Paul’s teaching to mean something arrogant like, “I can do anything I want to do, and no one has a right to criticize me” (compare Romans 6:1–4).
Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats.
This half-verse seems to introduce another Corinthian slogan. In this reading, the Corinthians used “an argument from analogy.” That kind of reasoning often goes something like this: “As A is to B, so also X is to Y.” If that is the case here, then the Corinthians were equating the behavior of satisfying sexual urges with the behavior of eating to satisfy cravings of the stomach.
But God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
The analogy the Corinthians seemed to have been using overlooks the bigger picture. God designed our bodies to function as He intends. Food and stomach were indeed designed to work together, but not so regarding the body and fornication, a general term for sexually immoral acts. On the contrary, the body is meant for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. In other words, God intended our bodies for union with Christ, not for union in sexually immoral acts.
And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
We surrender our bodies and all their desires to the Lord’s service, and He commits himself to us. The fulfillment of the latter is seen in resurrection: Christ’s human body was raised from death by God, and our bodies will likewise be raised. Resurrection was being denied by some in Corinth, but Paul saves his fuller discussion on that error for later (1 Corinthians 15).
Restricting (vv. 15–16)
Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
This verse features the first of 16 times that Paul uses the word translated members in this letter. For Paul and his readers, this word refers to body parts, such as arms, legs, hands, and ears (compare 1 Corinthians 12:12–27). Paul is fond of picturing the church in terms of diverse human body parts with Christ as its head (Ephesians 1:22–23; 4:15). Use of this metaphor flows from Paul’s points about the believer’s union with Christ in the two verses just studied. Since the believer is united with Christ, he or she is part of Christ’s body.
Having made this point, Paul follows up with a second rhetorical question: Is it permissible to take parts of Christ’s body and join them to a harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
Sexual unions outside of marriage, whether paid or un-
paid, make the participants one in body, in violation of Genesis 2:24. That passage describes the marital union as making male and female “one flesh” (compare Matthew 19:5). Sexual intimacy outside of marriage creates an additional case of one flesh. For the married, the result is to bring an additional person into the marriage. This is destructive to God’s intent for the family unit. Things we do with our physical bodies will affect the body that is the church, a body to which we belong as members.
II. Consecrated Spirits (1 Corinthians 6:17–20)
Connection with the Lord (vv. 17–18)
But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
Paul again emphasizes the believer’s union with Christ. Referring to one spirit may be puzzling because the word spirit can take different meanings depending on context. In some cases, the word might refer to the Holy Spirit. In other cases, it refers to that part of a person that lives on after physical death. In other cases, it refers to a mental disposition.
The key is context. Having just condemned improper intimacy, Paul now contrasts it with an image of a proper relationship: spiritual intimacy unto the Lord (compare John 17:20–23). The implication here is that sexual immorality not only works against a marriage, but it also works against one’s relationship with God. The brief moments of physical pleasure that an immoral act brings are trifling compared to the lasting damage it causes. It is not possible to separate sexual behavior from a relationship with the Lord. This spiritual dimension must be the controlling factor.
Another viewpoint is that Paul is referring to the work of the Holy Spirit, whereby through the “one Spirit,” the believer’s spirit has been joined indissolubly with Christ. Under this idea, Paul is not comparing spiritual union with physical union. Instead, the focus is on the Holy Spirit, who has united the believer to Christ. Thus, one has no right to unite with another in an immoral way.
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
The final piece of Paul’s argument begins with the succinct command to flee fornication. Paul then uses candid language (again) to justify this strong warning as he puts sexual sin in a unique category of wrongdoing. Other sins are without the body, meaning they are external. For example, stealing may use the hands to accomplish the sin, but it is still “outside.” Sexual sin, by contrast, is against the body because of the intimate union between those engaged in it.
Temple of the Spirit (vv. 19–20) 19. What? know ye
not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Paul here draws upon imagery familiar from earlier in the letter: the body as the Spirit’s temple. Paul previously used this image to describe the entire community. This verse reinforces that Christians are collectively God’s temple on earth (1 Corinthians 3:16–17; compare 2 Corinthians 6:16). The Holy Spirit dwells in each follower of Jesus as a gift from God. The presence of the Spirit also signals God’s ownership of that person with the result that ye are not your own.
The Spirit inhabits the church corporately and each believer individually (Romans 8:9–11). Once this is understood, then one can grasp why engaging with a prostitute is starkly inconsistent with the Christian life.
How can a vessel of the Holy Spirit take part in such an unholy act? Such activity is not merely one of illicit physical pleasure. It is also an act of temple desecration.
For ye are bought with a price.
For Paul’s original readers, this word picture calls to mind the slave markets of cities such as ancient Corinth. Everyone in the Corinthian church knew of such places. Some may have suffered this dehumanizing experience personally. Some may have been slave owners, perhaps struggling to reconcile that fact with their new identity as Christians. For Paul’s initial audience, the phrase bought with a price would have been interpreted as the cost of a ransom to liberate a slave, with the redemption price being the blood of Christ (see Hebrews 9:12; compare Exodus 6:6; Isaiah 43:1; Luke 1:68).
Paul is not explicit about the nature and amount of the price paid (compare Revelation 5:9). Instead, he focuses on the fact that ownership has been transferred (compare 1 Corinthians 7:23).
Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Paul concludes with an exhortation. The transfer of ownership obligates believers to glorify God with their spirits and bodies in every way. To honor God with one’s spirit but not with one’s body is hypocrisy.
Conclusion: We Belong to God
Here’s the conclusion to the story we opened the lesson with. My friend Tony did not speak to his father for five
years. Tony went on to college, played on a Division III basketball team, and met his future wife. He avoided thinking or talking about his dad.
Then, one day, his dad called him and asked to meet for lunch. When they met, Tony refused to hug his father or even shake his hand. As they sat at the table, Tony prepared a laundry list of grievances. But his dad was there to apologize. He admitted that he had wronged his wife and children. He begged Tony for forgiveness. His father’s contrition moved Tony, and he quickly set aside his anger. But he had to ask one thing: Why had his father done it?
His father offered multiple explanations without excusing his actions. But one in particular stood out. He said, “I felt like my life wasn’t my own anymore.” Tony looked into his dad’s eyes and said, “It wasn’t yours to begin with.”
The thrust of Paul’s argument in 1 Corinthians 6:12–20 is that believers do not have full authority over their lives. We are members of Christ’s body. We are a temple of the Holy Spirit. We belong to God and must act in ways that glorify God. God calls us to live as those who belong to Him.
That requires our willingness to resist temptations. And forms of temptation exist today that did not exist in Paul’s day. Yet the principles Paul teaches remain useful in combating these temptations. Paul encouraged his readers to embrace and live in their identities as Christ’s body and the Holy Spirit’s temple. We, too, can and must help ourselves and our children walk in a way that is consistent with the identity God has given us.
It is noteworthy that Paul did not simply reject the slogans of the Corinthians. Nor did he merely give them commands without explanation. He granted that they did indeed possess freedom in Christ. But how were they best using those freedoms? And in what way are we accomplishing this?
Prayer:
Father God, thank You for making us part of Your Son Jesus Christ’s body, the church. Lead us to respect our individual bodies as belonging to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Health Costs Explode Under Trump’s Big Ugly Law
By Stacy M. Brown, BlackPressUSA.com Senior National Correspondent
With Donald Trump’s “Big Ugly” legislation now signed into law, health insurance premiums for millions of Americans are projected to spike in 2026, while critical subsidies for working families are being wiped out.
The law is a direct attack on the working class, the poor, and anyone not shielded by extreme wealth. According to multiple filings reviewed by KFF and the Peterson Center on Healthcare, premiums in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces are poised to jump by a median of 15% nationwide in 2026. More than a quarter of insurance companies are seeking increases of 20% or more.
KFF found that, at the center of this spike, is the law’s provision to end enhanced premium tax credits—financial assistance that helped more than 24 million people afford
health coverage. Beginning in January 2026, these subsidies will disappear, and individual premium payments will increase by more than 75% on average for those who have been receiving them. The impact will be especially devastating for low-income Americans. As healthier individuals exit the market due to rising costs, insurers warn that the remaining risk pool will become sicker and more expensive to cover. That’s expected to push gross premiums even higher, with the Congressional Budget Office projecting increases of at least 7.9% beyond the subsidy loss. “The enhanced premium subsidies are set to expire at the end of 2025,” Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont stated. “We expect that some healthy individuals with lower claims than average will forego health insurance… this will cause the premiums to increase by 6.6 percent”.
Tariffs introduced under the

new law are compounding the crisis. Trump’s tariffs on imported goods, including pharmaceuticals, are already pushing insurers to raise premiums beyond medical inflation. UnitedHealthcare, Optimum Choice, and other carriers cited the tariffs as justification for rate hikes ranging from 2.2% to 3.6% above their standard increases. Prescription drugs made up
12% of private health insurance spending in 2023. With costs expected to climb under the new import restrictions, families will shoulder higher bills at the pharmacy and in their premiums. These changes hit vulnerable groups hardest. In 2023, nearly 30% of U.S. adults delayed or skipped medical, mental health, or dental care due
FTW Everything We Got, We Earned
By Tony Wafford
Isn’t it deep that whenever European Americans are asked, legally or legislatively required, to be fair and equitable with Black people or other people of color they seem to always lose their minds. I believe there’s nothing European Americans hate more than when the playing field is made level.
I remember one day hearing that crazy ass Candace Owens talking about when she gets on the plane and she looks in the cockpit, if she sees a Black pilot she becomes nervous because she doesn’t know if he or she was a DEI hire. By contrast whenever she sees a European American doing anything in her sick head it’s because they earned it. No Candace, they’re just European.
This made me think about European Americans and the Asian American community, how they got their panties all in an uproar because Ivy League universities were actually trying to be fair as it relates to African American admission and enrollment.
That’s right, Asian Americans allowed themselves to be played by a European American by the name of Edward Blum. Blum led the charge in 2014, suing Harvard University, alleging discrimination against Asian American applicants in its admissions process. Do you really think for one second that this European American guy really gave a damn about Black enrollment versus Asian enrollment? Please.
I wonder why he, along with our Asian brothers and sisters, didn’t sue these Ivy Leagues universities on the bases of legacy admission. You all know what legacy admission is. If not, let me break it down.
Legacy admission is when Billy or Mary Beth receives preferential treatment by an institution based on mom-
my’s or daddy’s relationship with someone at the school or an alumnus at the school and daddy is willing to build a new gym or library so Billy or Mary Beth can get around their GPA because of mommy and daddy’s M.O.N.E.Y.
You do remember “Operation Varsity Blues,” code name for the investigation into the 2019 criminal conspiracy scandal to influence undergraduate admissions decisions at several top uni-
versities. And oh, this was all European American parents cheating so their European American unqualified kids could get into Ivy League and major universities.
I know many of you believe that when you hear Yale, Cornell, Penn, Brown, Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth and Wharton, you think these people are really smart, right? Wrong! Not all of them are smart. Allow me to dispel that myth.
Did you know that America’s convicted felon, accused rapist, liar in chief, and because of the latest conversation around the Jeffrey Epstein files, we may have to add pedophile to this list, graduated from Wharton. Now how smart do you really think Trump is or did his daddy buy his degree?
Across the eight Ivy League schools, legacy admissions account for 10 to 15 percent of each incoming class. At
to cost. Black and Hispanic adults, uninsured individuals, and people in poor health reported the highest rates of unmet care needs. About 16% of Black adults said they or a family member had trouble paying medical bills. Nearly half of all uninsured adults reported worrying about affording care if they got sick. That concern is now reality.
Insurers across the country are responding with steep rate hikes. Out of 105 ACA insurers reviewed, none proposed cutting premiums for 2026. Last year, at least some insurers lowered rates. The new law has erased that possibility. The United States already spends more per person on health care than any other wealthy nation—$13,432 per person in 2023, nearly twice the average of peer countries. And yet, U.S. residents remain more likely to go into debt for care, avoid treatment due to cost, and face financial ruin from an illness. “The expiration of these federal benefits increases premium costs for individuals and families and is expected to result in more people deciding to forego insurance coverage,” Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont warned. “This will shrink the population with coverage and worsen the risk pool, requiring higher premiums for the remaining members”.
Harvard, that number soars to 32–36 percent for the Class of 2027. Penn admits 22 percent legacy students; Princeton 14 percent; Dartmouth and Yale around 11–12 percent; Cornell 15 percent. The remaining coveted spots often go to athletic recruits and the children of major donors. In the end, it’s all about money. This is why it is so very important for me that whenever I see a Black doctor, a Black lawyer, a Black pilot, hell a Black person striving or doing good work, I know I’m looking at the best. Why? Because of DEI. That’s rightthey Done Earned It!

Dallas Wings Make Roster Moves; Bueckers Continues to Shine
By Cedric Bailey, Sports Editor

The Dallas Wings shook up their roster this week, announcing a trade that sends guard DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx. In return, the Wings receive forward Diamond Miller, guard Karlie Samuelson, and a 2027 second-round draft pick. As part of the transaction, Dallas also waived veteran center Teaira McCowan.
Diamond Miller, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, brings youth and potential to the Wings’ frontcourt.
The 6-foot-3 forward earned WNBA All-Rookie honors last season, ranking second among newcomers in scoring (12.1 PPG), fifth in rebounds (3.5 RPG), and second in assists (2.5 APG). Known for her range, Miller currently leads all WNBA forwards in threepoint shooting, hitting an impressive 53.8% from beyond the arc. Though her scoring has dipped to 4.1 PPG in 2025, Dallas is betting on her longterm upside.
Also joining the Wings is seventh-year guard Karlie Samuelson. The Stanford product has played in 16 games this season after recovering from foot surgery. A reliable shooter, Samuelson has averaged 5.3 points per game over her career, connecting on nearly 40% of her shots from three-point range. Carrington, who joined Dallas in a fourteam trade earlier this year,
averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists across 20 games with the Wings. Her aggressive play and energy will now bolster a rising Lynx squad.
Meanwhile, the Wings part ways with Teaira McCowan, who had been a key piece since arriving from Indiana in 2022. The 6-foot-7 center averaged 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 17 games this season but has consistently ranked among the league’s top rebounders and finishers throughout her career. While roster changes dominate headlines, rookie guard Paige Bueckers continues to dazzle. For the second month in a row, Bueckers has been named WNBA Rookie of the Month for July, becoming the fourth player in franchise history to earn the award twice—and the only rookie league-wide to repeat this season.
Paige averaged 18.2 points (9th in the league), 5.2 assists (10th), and 1.8 steals (4th) during the month, leading all WNBA rookies in scoring and assists. She scored 20 or more points in five of nine July games and now ranks sixth overall in 20-point outings this season. In just 23 games, Bueckers has already entered the Wings’ franchise rookie record books, ranking in the top 10 for points, assists, and steals. On July 30, she became the fastest player since Cynthia Cooper in 1997 to reach 400 points and 100 assists—accomplishing the feat in only 22 games.
As the Wings reshape their roster and eye a playoff push, the emergence of Bueckers as a star-in-the-making gives fans plenty to cheer about.

Senior Bingo - bingo and health speakers are on the first Friday of each month.
From 10:00 till 12:00
Our program, Senior Bingo, aims to combat social isolation among seniors. Research has shown that older adults who experience social isolation are at an increased risk for cognitive decline, heart disease, and a variety of mental and physical health issues.
To address this concern, we organize a monthly social event where seniors can connect and engage their minds. This gathering takes place in an area with the lowest life expectancy in the state. Participants have the chance to socialize, play games, and share meals. Additionally, we invite guest speakers to discuss important topics, including health and legal issues.
Senior Box ProgramBoxs of food first Friday 12:30 till 2:30
FWAFWC partners with the Tarrant Area Food Bank to distribute food through the Senior Box Program. This program, part of the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, allows qualifying seniors aged 60 and older to receive a monthly box of USDA foods to supplement their diets. Each box contains shelf-stable items, including canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, canned meats, juice, and a block of cheese.
Some local food banks have observed an increase in the number of seniors using their services toward the end of each month. They found that seniors rely on these services to help them get by until their next Social Security checks. The Senior Box Program is an ideal fit for the needs of seniors in the area near our building. We distribute the food boxes from our location, which is situated in one of the city’s designated food deserts. In this area, some residents may have to travel up to an hour by bus to access healthy food options.
Diaper Bank - Diapers first Friday 12:30 till 3:00. FWAFWC is a partner agency of the Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW). The
JLFW Diaper Bank aims to eliminate diaper needs and enhance the physical, mental, and financial well-being of children and adults throughout Tarrant County. It provides diapers at no cost to local nonprofit partners that assist individuals facing poverty, mobility issues, or health limitations. Since its inception, the JLFW Diaper Bank has provided over 2 million diapers to nearly 100 nonprofit organizations.
Computer Classes -Computer classes each Monday 1:00 till 2:30 FWAFWC has partnered with Goodwill of North Texas to offer computer classes at our facility. These classes provide an invaluable resource to the community by equipping individuals with essential computer skills and knowledge. By enhancing residents’ digital literacy, participants will learn how to navigate the internet and apply for jobs online. Additionally, the classes will cover important topics such as online safety, email usage, social media, and other forms of digital communication.
