LETTER FROM THE EDITOR.

together we grow

et’s face it guys, times are challenging. The economy has made a major shift, and we all have to make some lifestyle adjustments. Modeling and talent agencies are closing their doors for good…it’s a pretty crazy time. Those of us who are still working should be thankful. You know, on the positive side, I’ve noticed a much more humble attitude in the people that I’ve encountered lately. We are less materialistic, less flashy and less wasteful. In that vein, we can save money in these hard economic times by going GREEN. Since my days in the womb as a macrobiotic fetus, I’ve always been an advocate of living a ‘green’ lifestyle. Not perfect, but trying to do something impactful every day. The truth is everything we do has an effect on the earth, good and bad. The more we throw away, the more landfills we create. By recycling just one glass bottle, you save enough electricity to power a 100 watt bulb for four hours. For every action, there is a reaction. As globalization makes the world smaller, humanity becomes closer, and it’s easier to see how we all affect each other. What we do to one, affects the other. By making small changes to our lifestyles – like recycling, turning off electricity, making conscious decisions – we’re doing great things for the world and ourselves. Throughout this issue, we are encouraging you to find ways to live a greener life, help sustain our Earth and save some money. How great is that?!! My eco-soldiers, let’s go out there and make a change for the better! And on the journey, may the peace and blessings of God be upon you…

crushing on the reprise of the Elyse Taylor super.model by Maryam Basir

In the early 90’s, supermodels like Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford ruled the fashion world. They graced the covers of top fashion magazines, as well as makeup brands and premiere clothing lines. These days, celebrity singers and actors have taken over the jobs of the now-extinct “supermodel.” A supermodel is a highly paid model who has attained celebrity status through modeling. In this day and age, celebrity is easily achieved from venues as simplistic as YouTube. A cycle has been created; reality TV stars are taking jobs from actors, actors are taking jobs from supermodels, supermodels are taking jobs from TV hosts. What is going on? Perhaps this is simply the progression of the entertainment universe. Trying to decipher who’s job is what, and who’s taking over, is as mystifying as the Bermuda Triangle. Looking at the current trends of fashion and modeling, one cannot help but reflect: has the elusive supermodel become extinct in the turn of the century? O r, is there a gradual reprise on the horizon of young, beautiful, super-posing models, like Elyse Taylor, who are on the road to world domination again? New York based model Elyse Taylor is a gorgeous, indemand model who has been consistently working since she migrated from her native Sydney, Australia. She’s graced countless magazine covers, campaigns, and editorials. Estee Lauder’s newest international perfume, See Through Ruby scent, has chosen her as it’s representative, putting her in the company of Elizabeth Hurley and Gwyneth Paltrow. This was one of the most sought-after campaigns in the world, until she landed it. Elyse is not only a super-cute baby-faced fierce supermodel; rumors say she will be conquering the other side of the fashion industry, starting a new street wear line. I had the pleasure of working with Elyse for Violette New York’s campaign. She’s super-hot physically, and as we traded boyfriend and make-up stories, I realized that she’s also grounded and down-to-earth. Awesome. We, at TheBiz, are in Elyse’s corner, and wish her the best with her future endeavors. If the coveted role of the supermodel makes its return in 2009, Elyse Taylor has definitely earned the title. Keep in mind If you’re a model on the road to celebrity, know your abilities. Be versatile, yet disciplined and focused. Do the best that you can do, no one can take your spot, because no one can be you...quite like you!

male model

an

tells his story of sexual harassment We’ve all heard rumors about the casting couch. Horror stories featuring ambitious actresses and models on the road to landing a job. What everyone may not know is that the victim isn’t always a female. This is the true story of one male model’s exploitation.

My aunt is a casting director. Upon moving to the city I asked her if she could refer me to an agency. She was able to get me an appointment with a modeling agent she worked with in the past who provided her with solid talent. I had never met with an agent, but I was excited about taking this first step in the right dire c t i o n . I walked into the office, a little nervous but still excited. The first red flag revealed itself when our meeting was held in the back room of a studio. I ignored my sixth sense – after all, maybe this was normal. The meeting commenced but immediately became very personal, with lots of questions having little or nothing to do with modeling - even questions about my lovelife. The energy completely strayed fro m p rofessionalism to flirt a t i o n . I became confused as to why I was there. Then the agent looked to size me up, made me stand and turn around, which I thought was part of the routine. He then asked me to strip down to my underwear, assuring that it was standard procedure in order to take my measurements. My gut told me something was wrong, but I didn’t want to insult him. He measured me, and caressed areas of my body as he did. The more familiar he became with me, the more unnecessary touching happened. He then asked me to sign a contract with his agency on the spot. I did, and he still sends me out to this very day. He tries to get me to come to the agency often, but I just go to drop off composite cards when they run out. I keep phone conversations short, and keep communication open, only because he actually sends me to professional castings, and I don’t want to miss any opportunities. As far as the harassment, I never mentioned the incident to my aunt. I have been to many meetings with respectable agents since that first one. I now realize I should have trusted my instincts and not allowed that type of behavior. I wrote this article because I would like to bring to light that this misuse of power affects men as well as women. Always trust your inner voice when it warns you to be aware of how you are being treated. As for me, lesson learned.

the right modeling agency for you

BY YEMISI OKUSANYA

There are a tremendous variety of model types in this industry…from fashion to plus to pregnancy modeling, there’s work everywhere. Someone has to represent these models! It only makes sense that there are many different types of agencies. If you’d like to do this as a career, you’ve got to get out there and find the right agency for you. Research modeling agencies online and narrow them down by your type. Reputable agencies will have a website and all of the information necessary for you to apply, in – person, through email or by mail. Check their height and weight requirements, and decide on which division you may fit. To start, you can check out: http://models.com/agencies/top/ or check TheBiz magazine’s agency spotlight. Attend open calls for these modeling agencies. If there isn’t an upcoming open call, telephone them and ask to drop by. Bring a portfolio with you and make sure it has body shots, profiles, smiling and beauty shots. If they are interested in working with you, and they want you to shoot for them, ask to see samples of their photographers’ work. Inquire about their most successful models and what kinds of jobs they have booked. Ask a model who’s with that agency about his or her experiences there. Visit at least five agencies before signing with one. Avoid signing exclusive contracts and do not sign a contract that locks you in for more than two years. In addition, an agency should never receive more than 20% of your earnings. Happy hunting!

TheSerious Actor

appealing to an agent By Yemisi Okusanya

An agent will submit you for acting work, negotiate and book auditions and acting jobs for you. Pick one who specializes in the area in which you’r e interested. Research agents and the local laws governing them; many cities and/or states require talent agents to be licensed. "Casting Call” (f ormerly The Ross Reports) provides contact information for every talent agency and casting director in New York and LA. It’s available online for a fee, or at newsstands. Remember, real agents are free, and get 10 to 20 percent of your earnings when you are paid. Check if an agent is either certified by the Screen Actors Guild, a member of the Association of Talent Agents, or the National Association of Talent Representatives. There are a few ways you can get an agent. The most effective way is being seen in a production that showcases you. Get parts in student films, low budget films, and talent showcases. Check out Craigslist.com or other websites for projects. This way the agent can see your work first hand, get excited about what they see and want to send you out. Keep in mind, auditions are also free. If they try to charge you at an audition, beware...it’s pr obably a scam. The next best way is through a referral by a friend who’s wit h the agency. If your friend gives a glowing recommendation, you will usually land a meeting. Don’t ha ve a friend with an agent? Time to get one. Network, network, network! Finally, you can submit your headshot, cover letter, resume, and reel, if you have one, through the mail. The problem with this option is the volume of mail an agency receives daily can be overwhelming, and unless it is a fantastic headshot and credible resume, it will more than likely end up in the trash. So be creative when putting together your package or sending your email...good luck!

T V Check! Reality

by Imani Bibbins

DOES REALITY TV MAKE OR BREAK YOUR CAREER AS AN ACTOR OR MODEL? Reality television has never been as popular as it is today. Its existence has taken over, and put a damper on the actor’s opportunity for work. What now? Is the question most up & coming talents are asking. You may be thinking, “If I can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em…right?” Reality TV offers great exposure for dancers and singers, but in regards to actors and models the verdict had yet to be finalized. Let’s tackle the model and actor situation. The entertainment industry wants the next hot and fresh thing! If you have an established following, your stock catapults even higher. Someone we watched cause havoc for an entire season, may not be considered for professional work. On the flipside, if you’re an individual who used the exposure in a positive fashion and exuded talent and class, your name will, in the very least, get your foot in the door. Reality TV stardom does not guarantee a reputable career – it may even do the opposite for you - but it does on some level propose the possibility of celebrity. If that’s what you want, go for it. But be clear with which direction you want your livelihood to follow, before filling out an application for The Real World.

ask

Safiyah

Dear Safiyah, I just moved to New York from Florida; my sales job transferred me here to manage one of their stores. I appreciate the opportunity, but the more I go to work each day, the more I feel as if I want to get into acting. There's something that really excites me about the thought of being able to reach complete strangers through emotions just from being on stage. And I want to be a star. But I'm afraid to just quit because of the current economic situation. What do you think I should do?

Signed, Stargazing in Soho

Dear Stargazing in Soho, Don’t be scared. I think it's great that you actually realize your passion. That alone is one huge step that many people never get to. Now, step two... try to see if you can juggle both. Remember, anything you want to do, with focus and determination is possible. Plus, you’re in the city that makes it happen, if YOU want it to. I’m not saying to quit your day job. Speak to your superior - ask if you can possibly cut back on some hours, because it’s true, times are tough for most people. Do your research. Look up acting classes, research how to get started in the business (you can start with TheBiz), look up websites to steer you in the right direction. Don't waste time if you think you really want to act. Only you can stop you from realiz ing your goal. So go after it, and don’t let anything get in your way. Break a leg!

All life is transitory; we cannot stop the clock, hold back the hour, cease the passing of the moment unless, of course, we film it.

Armando Ianucci

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.

done right

So, what’s the casting for today? Are you a business person, housewife, fitness guru or glamour goddess? In this world, the competition is fierce, so some added preparation gives you the advantage. Make sure you look the part when heading to your castings. This is where hair and make-up is key. You have to sell yourself as that character, and because it's a visual industry, your character should always show up before you do. Guys - Make sure you are well groomed: all facial hair, even eyebrows, fingernails and hair. No need to wear makeup, just put a little care into you and it will show. Girls - When it comes to acting auditions, for a glamorous role, your make-up should be appropriate, but not too much. Eyebrows should be manicured, you can use eyeliner and mascara, and just enough blush so it’s visible but not over-the-top. Plus, a bright-colored lip-gloss. The casting director should see this character clearly. If you’re older, replace the lip-gloss with lipstick. Your hair should be coiffed; not necessarily perfect, but neatly kept, remember that this reflects the effort you will put into your role. For a more simple casting, keep it clean. Your make-up should be light and soft, with a medium to light lip-gloss (not too wet or shiny). S o f t e y e l i n e r, a l ittle mascara. Light bronzers can replace blush. Your hair should be simple, maybe pulled back into a chignon, the ends bumped under or flipped out. Making these specific adjustments shows that you take your craft seriously. For models, your casting process - or as I like to call it, interview - is different. You are there for the designers to dress you. So you'll need to be a blank slate, showing up as simply as possible. If booked, you’ll be transformed into someone else's vision. It's not about you or your character, so don’t upstage the designer's wears. Keep makeup minimal. Your hair should be in a ponytail, pulled back from the face - the less distracting the better.

Strike a pose...

Expand Your Horizons Allow yourself to try new things. Don’t w orry about what others may think. Too many restrictions limit the impact of your portfolio; your portfolio is what gets you work. I’m no t saying to go against your beliefs, but don’t be dif ficult. Unless you have a Ph.D in PhotoShoot-ology Don’ t assume you know more than the photographer, make-up artist, hair stylist, and wardrobe stylist. Should we all leave? You seem to think you can do it all. The Major “No, No” Do not get on the beauty team’s bad side. Pho tographers know that models sometimes act differently around the stylists. They are known to ask us for feedback. We will be honest. Thanks, but no Thanks Unless you’v e been asked to, don’t br ing your own wardrobe changes. And unless you are allergic to the make-up the artist is using, keep your cosmetics to yourself. If It’s not Broken, Don’t Fix It Don’t c hange your make up after you’v e been prepped. It’s r ude, and a waste of the make-up artist’s time. Hmm, how should we put this You don’t w ant to be the remembered for your smell, unless it’s a pleasant one. Please, please, please, shower and wash your hair! If you’r e aware of your potent body odor, carry spray with you.. and use deodorant. Early is on Time If your call time is 6:00 am, be there at 5:45 am. Sorry but no, you can’t go par ty with your friends the night before. This is work. Get your priorities straight. This isn’t Twitter No one at the shoot wants to know your gossip. Turn your cell phone or blackberry off. The crew doesn’t ha ve the time to wait while you talk to your boyfriend or gossip with your girlfriend. If you have a kid or sibling who needs you, turn the phone down or use that nifty vibrate function. We’d r ather not hear Beyonce ring the alarm...again and again and again….. Go Solo Don't bring an entourage with you. Space is usually limited. If you’r e all like, “ Those are my people with me, th ey have to be here,” believe me, this will be your last photo shoot. Keep it Clean Flirting with the photographer or the editor of the magazine will get you nothing but a bad reputation. You can be witty and fun, but remember, you are at work.

REYES

Judy Reyes has her own bobble head, co-starred with the Muppets, and inspired a couture line of scrubs. She's also a spelling bee champ. Born and raised in Washington Heights, she began her career in NYC. Truth told, her skills for drama are at the level held by Oscar winning actresses, and ironically, she can bring you to tears...when she makes you laugh. She is a Latina who has achieved success most actors will not (8 years on a HIT television show, Scrubs); I’m not being a downer, I’m telling the truth. Yet Judy is not gossip magazines and glitter, she’s the craft and passion. And Chulo, her dog. To love Judy, is to love the by Giselle Rodriguez breathing teddy bear she shares her life with.

JUDY Your choices making it to the final cut. The improv stuff NOT ending up on the cutting room floor. When your writers and directors agree with what you’ve personally brought to the table. That’s wonderful. At that point it’s not just acting, it’s creating.

TO S.A.G... or not to S.A.G. get your answer here...

by Corey Hibbert

Joining the Screen Actor’s Guild is very important if you plan to pursue acting as a lifetime career. Union benefits, whether SAG, AFTRA or EQUITY are: a percentage of your earnings goes toward your Pension & Health, and you're covered as far as wages and working conditions are concerned whenever you're on a union project. Keep in mind that once you join the union, you're not allowed to work on non-union projects. Although this prevents some work opportunities, it does promote safety, and aid in monetary circumstances (like if producer should decide to skip out of town without paying you). If you're just starting out, it may not be a good idea to join SAG immediately, unless you've had some formal training with a reputable acting coach or acting school. Non-Union projects are wonderful facets to gain experience and collect materials to create a reel. In some cases, you may be a must-join, meaning you’ve booked a significant project, and have to join the union in order to shoot it. Only then should you join without experience. Don't let anyone talk you into or out of joining; make the decision for yourself. Think long and hard about it. The unions are not perfect, but how else will your rights as a performer be protected? Opinions vary, but it may be a good idea to at least work on several projects (Film/TV) in order to gain needed experience about the acting industry first. The SAG eligibility requirements are as follows: you need 3 waivers (3 days of SAG covered Background/Extra work), or a Principal contract. After you become eligible, then there is a one-time initiation fee, which is around $2000 (for the exact amount, contact SCREEN ACTORS GUILD at 1800-SAG-0767). Once you’re a member, you pay dues twice a year (every six months), based on the amount of money you make from union jobs.

a

spiring models and actors land in LA with dreams of being the next Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, Gisele Bundchen or Gregg Avedon. In their quest for fame, fortune, and undivided attention from the paparazzi, money worries are often present. One obvious option for making money is Extra Work (aka Background Acting) on a television show or feature film. On a few occasions I have participated in background work. However, the monotonous boredom, craft services, and eccentric personalities gave me some fabulous stories to email my east coast friends and family about. I’m not the only one with tales to tell. This is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly side of background work.

THE GOOD

Javon: Javon: The best part about working as an extra is craft services. There is nothing like free food when you’re living on a shoestring budget. Mealtime is often the only time background actors come alive. Mike: I’m interested in learning how to work behind the camera. Seeing directors and producers on set gives me the opportunity to watch them at work. I also get the chance to network with some of the other background actors. Lillian: Getting to work with seasoned professionals on hit shows is awesome. I have worked on set with Tracy Ullman, Adam Sandler, John Stamos, and Miley & Billy Ray Cyrus. Denise: Downtime on set gives me the chance to get other projects done. Some people sit around in holding and complain about being bored and don’t make positive use of their time. There is nothing like getting paid to do your own paperwork or homework and getting paid to eat catered meals.

OF

BACKGROUND ACTING

BY OSHI WILLIAMS

IN L.A.

THE BAD

Javon: The down time is terrible. These are moments you can spend doing something more constructive someplace else. There is often nothing to keep your mind stimulated. You’re confined in “holding” for the extras and are clueless as to when the shoot is going to happen. Usually coworkers drag you into dimwitted conversation and torture you with bad advice. The problem is that a lot of them have no idea about anything in the industry, but they also have no life outside of the industry.

Mike: You’re competing with so many different people out here in LA. The work is also sporadic. You can get booked every day and then hear nothing for weeks. This can be frustrating because you never know what kind of money you are going to make in order to cover your bills and living expenses. Lillian: If you’re playing a tourist, you must be in a Hawaiian shirt, no matter where the scene is supposed to be taking place. If you’re a tourist in Africa, Japan, Haiti, The U.S. of A., Italy, or Australia, it doesn’t matter; you MUST be wearing a Hawaiian shirt! Another downside is that you never really know what you’re getting yourself into when you show up for work. When I worked on Eli Stone, they simply told us that we needed to able to move briskly. I didn’t know that this entailed dancing in the street for fourteen hours straight on the hottest day of the summer (106 degrees). And craft services gave the background actors hot water while the cast and the crew got nice cold water! Denise: Many background actors are registered with Central Casting and other call-in services. This means that we are all fighting for the same jobs and the competition can be stiff. If you choose not to pay a call-in service to help you book jobs, you can be on the phone for hours and hours each day doing nothing but listening to busy signals. And if by some slim chance you do get through, there is a 10 to 1 chance that the job that you are calling for has already been booked.

THE UGLY Javon: If you’re asked to leave the set for whatever reason, that’s ugly. This can be the most crucial nail in the coffin of your career as a background actor. Mike: You can easily be treated like crap. I never try to take it personally but sometimes it is frustrating to experience terrible treatment. The background actors always eat last, after the principal cast and the crew. The union workers (SAG) get treated much better than the non-union, and the industry makes it nearly impossible to get the SAG vouchers you need to join SAG. And even if by some miracle, three SAG vouchers fall into your lap, you have to come up with $2400 to join SAG. And even though the SAG people get treated a little better, the end result is that they just get treated like a better class of crap. Lillian: There is no screening process for background actors. You never know if you’re working with someone that just waltzed out of the mental institution. Once, there was a guy standing on the table swinging a folding chair screaming, “I am not a puppet! I am not a monkey! You can’t make me do these things!” He was asked (forced) to leave the set. A week later, I show up for work on another set and viola, there is that same guy! Denise: The stereotypes that they are looking for are so narrow-minded. The majority of the time when they are looking for extras in a club scene, beach scene, Downtown Los Angeles scene or whatever type of scene, they emphasize “must be very, very, very attractive and no bigger than a size two or four.” The women they often look for are Barbie types and uphold the jaded standard of beauty. Last week I saw a casting call for chubby and overweight people… get this, you had to be size 10! And if they are casting for a NYC scene… get this… under no circumstances can you be a blonde! Hah!

ERIN SULLIVAN THE TRUE CHRONICLES OF ONE GIRL’S RISE TO STARDOM . . . OR RISE TO AT LEAST BEING ABLE TO PAY HER BILLS. Life in the big city is hard enough. Now throw in being in your 20’s (aka: quarter life crisis), going on countless auditions (which equals countless rejections), living in an apartment the size of a stamp, taking crappy jobs just because they offer free food, and you’ve got the life of a New York City actress. Being an actress in NYC sounds glamorous on paper, but it is anything but. These are the true chronicles of one girl’s rise to stardom . . . or rise to at least being able to pay her bills.

Contentedness: ...This weekend was a crazy blur of fun and constructiveness. I picture wrapped my film late Friday night and am sad to be finished with the project. But as I was riding back into Manhattan from set, I took one look at the city skyline glowing in the pitch black sky and a profound happiness set into my soul. I took a deep breath and sighed contentedly. I’m living my dream right now. I’m an actress in New York City, one of the best cities in the world. When I was little, I never dreamed about being rich and famous (ok, maybe I did some of the time,) but what I really dreamed about was living the life of an artist in New York. Sure, I don’t have a lot of money, sure I still consider Mac & Cheese to be an extremely satisfying meal, but I am living my dream. Lately I have not been as stressed about my future- I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and let the wind blow me in whichever direction the leaves are inspired to take me. Saturday I had an audition for a TV series which I think went pretty well. I had a bit of a revelation about film/TV acting during one of my past ambien induced hallucinations and I’ve actually been feeling a lot better about my acting ever since.... ...read more of Erin’s blog (and much more) on BizMagOnline.com, blog

Summer is here! Can you feel it? Temperatures have risen, the sun hangs around longer, everyone’s heading to the beach, summer jobs are here, and, of course, it’s time for summer beauty shopping! Your beauty regimen should change from season to season. What works for you during the winter won’t always work as well in the summer. Protecting your skin during the summer is key, and doing it naturally is even better. Try going green this summer using all natural, cost – effective products. They will leave your skin looking and feeling its absolute best!

BODY SCRUB Create your own all-natural body scrubs using one-part sugar or salt and one-part olive oil. Mix it together and use it in the shower or tub. This homemade concoction is great for removing dead skin cells while moisturizing and revitalizing the look of your skin.

THE ‘IT DRINK’ OF THE SEASON is served in swanky spas worldwide for its medicinal benefits, and can be yours for a mere dollar or so per pitcher. Lemons are an astringent; they are antibacterial, antisudorific, detoxifying and have many other fine medicinal properties. Cucumbers alkalinize the body, normalizing systems made acidic by stress and too many trips to the coffee shop, plus provide micronutrients to the skin - you can also save a few of those cucumber rounds to pamper your tired eyes!

inner beauty

explore & culyours tivate by Maryam Basir

Hair, makeup, clothing and jewelry are material components that add to your physical beauty, but true beauty starts deep within, on a spiritual level. It comes from inside. The beauty that comes from youth and external elements fade with time, but the beauty that comes from inside, is not only eternal, but it grows richer over time, the deeper we go within ourselves. Here’s how to begin to cultivate inner beauty.

The positive aspect is that it is never too soon, or too late to cultivate your own inner beauty. It starts with searching deep inside, searching for your passions - the things that fulfill your soul in life - then continues when you use your passions in a positive way, to make the world a better place. When you do this, and you feel true satisfaction in life, it shows. When you are happy with your life, and you feel truly fulfilled, when you’re contributing to something that means a lot to you, the inner happiness radiates. Your skin has that “glow.” We all have an inner self that needs to be developed, gifts and talents to explore and share. To help that part of you grow, read positive affirmations every day, keep a private journal, go inside with meditation and prayer. The more you learn about your true inner self, the more beautiful you become. Also, be sure to smile, exude confidence, and find the joy within. And remember, the journey never ends...

Dear

,

I was reluctant to give you my attention from the beginning; I was happily attached to Myspace. Time had been invested. Photos were uploaded, links posted, blogs written, friends were made. Just the thought of doing it all over again was exhausting. I made my move when I heard that no one could create obnoxious background layouts. Keep it simple. That’s how I like my relationships. And to my pleasant surprise, you turned out to be the ultimate social network upgrade. You cast your spell on me. Your simple photo upload made it so easy to share my special moments and enjoy everyone else’s. Which is why two hours later, I’m still looking through photos! Sometimes of people I don’t even know! That nifty (aka, hazardous) tag feature led me to my cousin’s husband’s, best friend’s brother’s fiancée’s Vacation ’96 album (The beach was gorgeous, I must say!). And what’s up with “passing out drinks” and “planting trees”? Who’s got that kind of fantastical time? Get your bum-bum outside and plant some real trees. Bring a friend. When you’re done, you can both congratulate one another with a nice cold lemonade. Moving along…what is up with the “relationship” status. Hello! My ex-boyfriend didn’t get the official “we’re exclusive” from me, why would I want the world wide web to know who I’m dating…or that I’m even dating for that matter? But I can’t put single, ‘cause that starts a problem at home. It’s unnecessary. However, I can’t lie, there is an upside. I too can post photos of my new beau and me frolicking on the beach, sipping fresh coconuts (How do ya like them apples, Timmy??...) And furthermore, why do you have to “ignore” people. That’s just mean. How ‘bout “No, Thanks” instead? Adolescent insecurities run deep in humanity. The last thing anyone wants, is to be ignored, again, by your high school crush. NOT that it’s happened to me. I’m supa fly. To conclude, quite frankly, this just isn’t working out anymore. You’re entirely too demanding of my time. I’ve learned my lesson. Never, will I ever, expose myself so candidly or jeopardize my time on such silly nonsense. And no, I’m not leaving you for Twitter. I don’t want the world to know every moment of my day, and I sure as heck don’t care to know what you’re doing. Anyway, sorry Facebook, I need my time back, so I’m taking some time away from you. Moving On Up,

Giselle Rodriguez P.S.…And next time you get the brilliant idea of “upgrading” the layout, take a vote.

ONLINE “INDUSTRY” DATING by Giselle Rodriguez

Lindsay Lohan’s E-Harmony video post was funny - actually no, it was hilarious, but that’s because it was infused with sarcasm. And let’s keep in mind, there’s truth in jest. Depending on your level of success, you may consider whether or not you want that type of exposure. For someone who has already established a foundation in the industry, I wouldn’t recommend a dating site. Unlike your 9-5ers, fresh faces are a constant in the entertainment industry. Is it really necessary to use the Internet to find someone new? Don’t forget there’s an entire world of production crew individuals; your options are not limited to the actors and actresses on a set. Project to project, a new team of industry professionals are presented on a silver platter. If you are fortunate enough to book often, I would recommend you focus on your career and believe the partner you deserve will inevitably find their way to you. If you completely disagree with me and decide to put your information and pictures on the Internet, whatever you do, don’t use your headshot. You may think it’s cool, but it’s really borderline corny. You are there to present yourself as a person, not sell yourself as an actor. Let’s play devil’s advocate; perhaps you don’t want to date someone in the arts. If that’s the case, I say, “Online Dating All the Way!” This does NOT include Myspace or Facebook. Legit dating sites give you the safety of a screening process. Anyone can open an account on Myspace or Facebook. Safety above all else! This business is consistent in its’ inconsistency. A healthy relationship can provide the support you’ll need along the way. Some of the happiest couples I know met on the Internet. It’s also safe to assume someone you meet through a dating site is ready for a commitment. You don’t want to waste time or energy on someone who’s just passing time. Why judge where you find true love? Just remember, no matter when or where you cross paths with your possible life long partner, love yourself first. the mental experience By Maryam Basir

When I discovered it was yoga in a heated room, (about 100 degrees with high humidity) I welcomed the challenge. As the class progressed, I realized this was more than a challenge, but a testament to my yearning for the extreme. If I could make it through this one class, I could do anything. Not only is this a physical challenge, but a mental eye-opener, forcing me to dig into the depths of my mind and discover the things that have been hiding away, and deal with them. When you put yourself under extreme physical conditions, you’d be appalled at what you come face to face with. It increases your strength and belief in your abilities. As the teacher encouraged us to stay strong in each position, I thought about that deadline, those lines I must memorize, my relationship, the extra hours I have to put in, and so many of the challenges life presents. I felt the strength to face and conquer them. Some say that hot yoga is for gluttons for punishment; I love it and I’ve been hooked since my first class. Not only does hot yoga help you lose 500-600 calories per 1.5 hour class, but it gets your mind at a peaceful place, and the results are instantaneous and amazing! Nanci Muriello, owner of Big Apple Power Yoga shares: “Hot Power Yoga is obviously a workout, strengthening and lengthening the muscles, creating flexibility and coordination and burning calories. But that’s only half the story. It is really more of a “work-in,” taking you on journey inside of yourself. This style of yoga will balance out your energy while building confidence, self-love and empowerment. How? As you move through the flow of the sequence, tension and resistance start to melt away in your physical body. You experience moments of challenge and ease. Your mind begins to empty and the clutter dissolves. Relaxation moves in, bringing forth an overall sense of peace and well-being.” Well said, Nancy! www.bigapplepoweryoga.com

trendspotting

by Yemisi Okusanya A peek under the tents at Spring/Summer 2009 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week revealed an abundance of trends.

Sheer pants, bondage dresses, and stomach-baring crop tops are better left to a few daring celebs, but there are plenty of fresh new styles anyone can pull off. Here’s how you can make these looks work.

Flower Power:

Men and women can wear all these trends, floral craze included. Men grab those floral shirts, ties, and boxers. Summer is going to be a lot of fun!

A Punch of Neon:

Designers dove into a box of highlighters for hot pink, bright yellow, shocking orange, cobalt blue, and neon green. Not ready for that much color all over your body, especially neon green? Do just a hint of it. If you can handle neon colors, balance it with black and minimal accessories. METALLIC FABRICS need to be used sparingly. If you feel you can pull off a metallic dress, go simple with makeup and accessories.

THE RUNWAY

took a turn back in time in Spring 2009, and I had the pleasure to witness it all. To my surpr ise grunge is back! Some of fashions icons like Givenchy, Rodarte, and Rag & Bone showcased leather pants, ripped jeans, and studded belts in their collections - trends that should be handled with care. Contrary to what some may believe, you can’t du plicate exactly what you see on the runway - too much accessorizing will put you in trend overkill. Runway shows are often over-the-top, created to inspire and entertain us. You don’t want to be ‘the entertainment’ as you walk down the streets of New York. Here are a few shoes and accessories to transform runway style into every-day looks for you. Shatonia Amee

accessoriesalert

In the summer…accessorize! You can create tons of great outfits with the simple switch of an accessory. If you have five castings this week, and money’s tight, accessories are your friend. You can take that simple white tee and skinny jean and make it pop with a chunky necklace, a great bag, or a killer pair of shoes. Throw some color into your look: if your pieces stand out, no one will notice that you’ve been wearing the same pair of skinny jeans a little too often. Standout jewelry is also a conversation starter; a jumbo ring or necklace is perfect. The designer or casting agent may ask about your piece. This is your chance to stand out from the pack with a good story behind the jewelry, Instead of a shy “thank you” try: “Thanks, it’s my favorite; I found it in a thrift store in the west village for twenty bucks!” Don’t let this opportunity pass you by - you want the person you’re meeting to see your personality. Even with the best physical features, a boring personality is blah, no one wants to work with that model. You may not have the strongest walk they’ve seen that day, but they’re going to remember that easygoing, fun girl that came in with the great necklace. Here’s an example of how you can jazz up your look by wearing “unwearable” jewelry on your castings, and in your everyday life.

T

by Shatonia Amee his summer it’s about comfort. Designers have presented us with collections of flowing, loose-fitted pieces: soft silks, cotton, and linen fabric is everywhere. The colors, light and airy, like white or khaki, with splashes of pastel here and there. Some even gave us a bit of a safari feel with the four-pocket belted jacket, which you could pair with shorts and sandals. If you’re a busy New Yorker like me, time flies, and it seems as if summer is over before it began, and we’re back to the snow boots. Let’s take advantage of the hot weather with some cool fashion this season. For fashion ammunition this summer, you’ll need a few key pieces. For example, solid pastel tanks, white cotton or linen shorts, sunglasses, espadrilles – yes, espadrilles – they’re back this season! You can wear a flowing A-line skirt, a little above the knee, with flat gladiators (which have emerged in beautiful hues this season). For a little more flair, pop on a pair of sunglasses and a big floppy straw hat. Large sunglasses are in, but let’s not go overboard. When shades are too big they tend to make you look like an insect, or - heaven forbid - like you’re wearing a gas mask - not the look for this season; maybe next year’s couture collection will feature gas masks, but until then let’s keep it simple. Another lovely trend this summer are long flowing sundresses - not just for your grandmother anymore. You can find affordable and stylish dresses without breaking the bank. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and you can wear them for a day of shopping, a lastminute casting, or even a summer bbq! Bottom line, keep it simple and pretty. Stash extra heels in those humongo-model bags (in the event of a casting), accessorize well, and you’re good to go.

eyond the tabloid fodder, think nipple exposure, fights with the paparazzi and the occasional foot-in-mouth moment, this chanteuse has created a new genre of music. One of the first to use MySpace as a marketing tool for music, Lily Allen's fiercely attitudinal 2007 debut, Alright, Still, sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and spawned a new “Lily wanna-be” seemingly every month, post-feminist frustrations, perky tunes and all. But no one does Lily like Lily. Her little girl, whispery come-to-me voice accented with plucky arrangements delights the ear while delivering jabs with child-like innocence. Her sophomore effort, It’s Not Me, It’s You (Capitol) is more than the soulful British girl power shock-and-awe relationship story telling of her debut. This album has those yummy jabs against boyfriends past and body image but also c overs God, mortality, and daddy issues. Lily’s sophomore release is more self-actualized while maintaining her sense of tonguein-cheek humor. Several of the dozen tracks could be a single, from the rousing "22" to "Who'd Have Known” to “F You.” Along with direct hits upside the head, it’s a fun listen with naughty nuances. james lipton (inside the actors studio)

by Yemisi Okusanya

ENTERTAINMENT careers

Since 1994, James Lipton has interviewed more than 250 of the world's most talented actors, directors, musicians and comedians. His interview style is fascinating and penetrating, delving into the minds of his guests, prompting a pure response. I watched Dave Chappelle interview James Lipton for the 200th episode of Inside the Actors Studio and he was revealed. James Lipton is not only the program’s creator, executive producer, and writer, but is also a multi-gifted actor, director, choreographer, producer, poet, and writer. His first career was as a lawyer. Acting was a way to finance his studies. Lipton moved to New York City and began 12 years of intensive studies in the performing arts. He studied under Stella Adler, one of the most highly acclaimed acting teachers in the history of American dramatic arts, and with Harold Clurman and Robert Lewis. He studied movie and television production and directing at New York University and at The New School. To add to his repertoire, he also studied voice, modern dance, and classical ballet. In the mid-1990s, he created the 3-year graduate level program, the Actors Studio Drama School, in collaboration with the home base of method acting, the Actors Studio, and New School University. As I learned his history, I wondered what words he had for someone who wanted to be an actor. His response came to me as I sat, listening along with countless others in a packed audience: “Great actors are born with a gift, a natural inclination for the art; an innate genius. Along with technical training from a great program, the combination is magic. The important thing is to be prepared for that moment. Whatever form it comes in, either at an audition or out on the street, when you are given the opportunity to display your talent be prepared. You must study, train and prepare. Acting requires hard work. There should be no doubt when you walk out of the audition or when you have completed your piece that you did all you could do. You know it was good. And when you discover that the part went to someone else for an aesthetic reason like they were taller or younger or better looking you get over the sting after a moment and you move on. You will feel worse when you are simply dismissed with a “Thank you. Next!” after you were awkward in the audition, caught up in your nerves, stumbling over the words because you did not train. You are then left with two choices: quit the business or begin to train.”

"Encouraging children to photograph the world through their eyes"

When photojournalist Linda Smith first traveled to Rwanda in 2006, she discovered that many of the children in her own photographs had never seen an image of themselves. Linda resolved to get these children on the other side of a camera, and the following year, Through the Eyes of Hope Project was born. Linda returned to Rwanda in 2007 to lead her first photography workshop, w o r k i n g one-on-one with 11 children who lost their parents in the ‘94 genocide or to AIDS. Since then, TEOH has served over 50 young people, through multiple photography workshops in Rwanda and a workshop in the Bronx, New York. Each program culminates in an exhibition of the children’s work, affirming their creativity and intelligence, and strengthening community ties. The original group (of eleven Rwandan children) continues to participate in TEOH workshops, through a partnership with Prossy Yohana at the Kagugu School. Many of these students earn extra money to support their families and pay for their school fees by photographing weddings and taking passport photos. Through the Eyes of Hope Project uses photography as a means of art therapy to empower underserved children and young adults around the world.
