THE BIZNESS

audition do’s and don’ts

A Casting Director is the middleman between the agency/actor and the director. Essentially, the goal of the CD is to employ people who will fit the director’s (and possibly the producer’s) artistic ambitions. Oshi Williams interviews an anonymous casting director, giving us the inside scoop: What will book you the job? What will turn them off? Read on to find out... OSHI: What is the craziest thing that an actor has ever done during an audition? CASTING DIRECTOR: One of the actors pulled out a gun during an audition for a gangster role. The director actually hired the guy on the spot! (TheBiz does not recommend this at all. It’s bad! It could get you arrested.) OSHI: What is the stupidest thing that a person has ever done during an audition? CD: I once helped get two friends cast in a film. They both auditioned for the main character, when one of the women did not get the lead role and her friend did, she accepted the lesser role, then never showed up to the set. Horrible. It made me look bad.

OSHI: Describe a great casting call. CD: A good turn out of the people who fit what the clients are actually looking for. For instance, when they are looking for a young white kid and the agencies send older black women, it’s a waste of time and money. When they find the people that they can actually use, it is time and money well spent. OSHI: What is the one thing that a person could do during an audition to immediately disqualify him or her from getting the part? CD: Other than pull out a gun? (he laughs)… two things: talk about money, and be a pest. Never pester the director or the producers, and don’t demand money... leave the money talk to your agent, and be agreeable, unless you feel uncomfortable with something. Then you can speak to the director. Don’t demand anything or be difficult or annoying. Remember that everyone is replaceable in this business. OSHI: Give me three do’s that every actor should adhere to during a casting call.

DO:

LEARN THE LINES. Take a few minutes alone to go over the sides, and memorize them as best you can. Then jump into the character. ASK QUESTIONS about the film or commercial that you’re auditioning for. But keep your questions light and simple. DRESS THE PART

DON’T: DISROBE. If there is nudity, they’ll tell you ahead of time and you shouldn’t be expected to take your clothes off at an audition, especially the first call. OVERSELL YOURSELF VERBALLY. Unless you were in a film with Tom Cruise that released last week, we don’t care. We don’t want to hear about the role you had in Joe Shmo’s independent feature or the 5 thousand plays you did. We don’t care who you are unless you are a household name. DIVULGE YOUR SEXUALITY. Okay, now you have some tips, straight from the source...good luck on your next audition!

Safiyah

Dear Safiyah, I’m a 28 year old actress who has been focused on my career for so long, that I have no idea how to date. I’m ready to find someone, but this process is going to be frustrating. I don't think I can do it. Signed, Scared in Secaucus

Dear Scared in Secaucus, Change is always difficult. Try this: make the commitment to give the person you’re dating a fair chance. Don’t talk yourself out of it before you begin, It's only frustrating if you make it that way, so relax. The key is to take your time and to not be afraid to take a chance for your love life. Sometimes we confuse our fears with our capabilities. Trust me, you can do it. Go ahead and take a leap of faith. After all, what's the worst that could happen? If you have a question for Safiyah, email TheBizMag@gmail.com and write “Ask Safiyah” in the subject.

Remember... In Process... Remember that everyone you meet today is still learning, growing and expanding. Remember that you are still learning, growing and expanding. We are never done. We will never get it all nor will we ever get it all right. Life is a continuous process of growth, discovery and expansion. Ease up on yourself and others. You don’t have to get it all right, and you don’t have to get it all done. TheSerious Actor steps to take

When considering an acting career, you have to realize that there will be ups and downs, and you have to stay positive and open to what the universe brings you. You also have to keep your determination and will to succeed. When you feel like giving up, don’t! Stick with it, make the right moves, and eventually you will make it to where you need to be. Throughout this whole process, study. Take acting classes that pertain to the kind of acting you will be doing. Learning never stops. Step 1: HEADSHOTS You must have a great headshot that not only looks like you, but expresses your personality. Think about what you want to portray, be it smiling, serious, character shots or glamorous. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on professional pictures, just make sure they are recent, clear and well cropped.

. 1

Step 2: GET AN AGENT To find an agency to suit you, look online at commercial, theatrical, legit agencies. Find the best 5-10 that suit you. Contact the agencies and ask them what their policies are to join the agency. Some accept email submissions only, some allow dropins and some have open calls. Each agency is different. Then follow through. Many times this is the difference between the actor who is signed and the one who is not. Follow-Through! Be honest about the type of agency you are looking for, and always be punctual and professional when dealing with them.

2.

Step 3: AUDITION Now that you’ve land the agent, you’re on your way. Now its time for you to show utilize your skills to do what you love. Once you have an agent sending you out, it’s up to you to get the part. Before your audition, be sure to memorize your sides, go over them again and again, and try different things. The day of, dress the part. At the audition, take some time to relax, breath and prepare yourself mentally. Be friendly and personable to the casting director, and don’t apologize if you mess up, improvise.

. 3

Step 4: GET THE GIG You’ve landed the job, congratulations. Always show up 15 minutes early. Be kind, personable, professional and easy to work with. In this business, word travels fast, so let all news about you be good news. m.b.

FOR MODEL CASTINGS Be polite to everyone.

Don’t wear too much make up. Follow instructions.

Always be 10-15 minutes early. Always have your materials: Portfolio, Comp Cards. Dress appropriately.

Don’t be loud in the waiting area.

Be discreet with your cell phone use. Don’t be difficult by asking for a different Polaroid.

Remember that every casting is like a job interview. Speak to the person who signs you in. You never know who’s going to have input in you getting cast. Don’t bring anyone with you. SMILE!

WORKING

Evaluate yourself First evaluate yourself to determine the path of your modeling career. For example, how tall are you? What are your measurements? You may opt to pursue commercial print modeling. These are the models that appear in products shots, catalogs, magazine ads and other advertisements. Height is not an issue because you are not modeling clothing. It does require that you have measurements to suit your height and an attractive face and are in shape. If you are tall, you may do fashion and editorial modeling. This includes runway work and high fashion print ads. There are also other types of modeling, if you are interested, explore your options thoroughly. Take professional pictures While some agencies accept snapshots, it’s always best to show up with professional modeling pictures. Find a photographer who specializes in modeling shoots. You can use resources such as TheBiz or the Internet to find photographers that suit your needs. Find an agency Look for agencies in your area either by searching online or in resource books. Call them and ask what their policy is for seeing people. When you meet with them, gauge their professionalism, ask who some of their current clients are and what model types they represent. After all, once you join an agency, they are working for you and your best interests. If they ask you to sign a contract, look over it very carefully and consider showing it to an attorney before signing. If it is exclusive, this means you have to be with this agency only, so make sure that m.b. it is a good agency that will keep you working.

BEAUTY, SPIRIT

touch mybody WORK OUT

Here in New York we're already ahead of the game; we walk everywhere. That's actually number one in my list of tips for staying fit. This activity alone drops the laziness factor to a minimum. Instead of taking a cab or the train, walk wherever you can.

EAT RIGHT

Eating right should already be a basic thought in your head. I don't recommend crash dieting or extreme sudden changes. Drastic shifts in your diet are difficult to maintain, you run the risk of going back to your old eating habits. Instead you may want to try the replacement method. Substitute whites (rice, bread, etc) with browns (brown rice and whole wheat bread). Eat less. If you're not hungry, don't eat. Don't use eating as a habit because it's a mealtime or because you're bored. Eat for the right reasons, to nourish your body. Notice what you are putting into your body and think about it before you do it.

INNER STRENGTH

In such a crazy, busy city, we need to make sure we make time to relax and take in the happenings of the day. One great way to do that is through meditation. Meditation is a devotional exercise of or leading to contemplation. It has been said that meditation is the path to all real knowledge. If you want to further your knowledge and depth as a person, meditation is wonderful way to propel your intentions. The act is to reflect deeply on a subject, not allowing distraction. Methods are endless. If you're interested, I suggest you go to a bookstore and get a book on beginning meditation methods.

This dramatic beauty goes for the gusto in vibrant lip color. Rihanna is wearing bright, vivid lipstick that brings instant attention to the mouth. This hue by Shu Uemura, Rouge Unlimited, is a creamy, rich textured, highly pigmented lipstick with ultra-smooth application. It also promises to last for 8 hours with vivid color and tremendous moisture. To apply, load up your lip brush with the lipstick. Don't worry about keeping the stick intact. Lipstick applied directly from the tube will never stay on all day. Don’t be shy, lay the color down richly on the lips and go right along the lip line.

14 TheBiz

Angelina Jolie-Pitt is famous for her talent, humanitarianism and beauty. And on any given day, she has dramatic liquid-liner drenched eyes. To apply liquid eyeliner like hers, rest your pinkie on your cheek. Try working in two steps: First start at the center of the eye and draw a line from the center to the outer corner. Then, go back to the inside corner of the eye and connect that line to the center. This will help keep the eyeliner close to the lashes. You can continue the outside line upward slightly to give lift to your eye. Make the line as thin or wide as you like. Try Almay Liquid Liner, or for a dramatic look.

Francois Legagneur

Beautiful drama The goal is to be strong, healthy, positive contributors to this society. In order to do this effectively, we must be of sound mind and body. Take care of yourself. And remember, your inside is equally important as the outside. What is inside of you shines through, it is your spirit. m.b. So nourish your mind, your body and your soul.

weight and water. If you lead a healthy lifestyle of exercise and a balanced diet, some weight gain will consist of water. Water gain is often the result of increased daily sodium intake. If your sodium consumption exceeds an amount the body can handle, the build-up causes the body to hold extra fluids in the blood and around the cells. This process is known as water retention. So be aware - daily sodium intake is generally high in the American diet!

Alcohol can be a major source of calories. One glass of wine contains about 120 calories (and as many as 150 calories for a larger glass). If you drink two to three glasses of wine every evening, you may be consuming 300 to 450 extra calories per day. This can result in a pound of weight gain every one or two weeks!

shrink your waist

Also, alcohol may increase your appetite, causing you to eat more than normal at dinner. As a result, your caloric intake may be from eating, in addition to the two to three glasses of wine that you may already be drinking. Stick to one glass of wine and substitute water for the second glass. Or avoid alcohol altogether on a daily basis. Permit yourself a glass or two on weekends only.

3.

Research shows a link between stress and weight. Stress often causes people to drop good eating and exercise habits that helped them lose weight. When people are stressed they can also have trouble falling asleep. Studies show that a lack of sleep leads to lower levels of the hormone leptin, which can cause an increased appetite. Tired people often turn to food, too, to replenish their energy. So just take in a deep breathe, release, and relax whenever possible!

elieve me, relationships can be a challenge. Communication, compromise and patience are key in making a relationship flourish. But for actors, models, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists, celebrity hair stylists, directors, producers, entertainers, and everyone else in this industry...you can multiply the challenge by ten. This is why people in the industry tend to mingle with other industry folk. It's more difficult for a person with a “9-5 to understand his or her mate jetting across the country for two weeks or a month at a time, last minute. Do not get discouraged though, it is possible. The number one key is trust. A person can be a garbage man, a stockbroker or congressmen; if he or she wants to step outside of the relationship, he or she will. If you trust your mate (because he or she has earned your trust) this is half the battle.

The next key factor is equally important: communication. If you are not happy with your current lifestyle or you feel neglected, talk about it. Let your partner know how important it is when they send you that text or make a quick call to say hello. On the other hand, do not become a nag. Understand that the entertainment world is usually hectic and busy. Offer ease and positivity to this person and he or she will apprecim.b. ate you more for it.

I fell in love with my CO-STAR by Oshi Williams

I’ve always advised people to avoid dating at the job. So, I was less than impressed with myself when I ended up falling in love with my very own costar.

From the minute he showed up on set, I knew he would be mine. We started rehearsing together and the chemistry was amazing! On and off-screen. There I was, all grown up yet feeling like a teenager with stupid butterflies in my stomach when we shot our scene that ended in our first kiss. It seemed like so much more than a scene from a movie, more like a chapter from the book of the rest of my life.

Sometimes this is what happens: you work with someone who you have an undeniable connection with, and sparks fly! If it seems like a mutually beneficial situation, go for it. But beware of letting your guard down while on the set, because you may be writing the next article about falling in love with your costar.

Andrea Dunn

We got closer as the days went on. We kept our off-screen romance a secret, but people undeniably started to notice. There was an awkwardness in continuing to work together while trying to keep our relationship under wraps. When we finally showed up together at an event in the city, other members of the cast and crew happened to be there and all of a sudden, the cat was out of the bag! Oh well! What we had was passionate and unforgettable. He made showing up to the set everyday so much more enjoyable. Our relationship was very intense and lasted for two and a half years after the wrap party. Though this is nowhere near the time of the Brangelina saga, it was absolutely amazing while it lasted.

Directors take overall responsibility for the style, look and sound of a film, tv show, commercial or video. Their job starts once they receive the script, although in some cases, the director may also be the scriptwriter. It is the director's artistic vision that will guide the work of the crew as they search for suitable locations, hire the cast, design the sets and finally edit the finished product. They must interpret the script, develop storyboards, guide actors, manage technicalities, delegate tasks, etc. Ultimately, the director has creative control over the project when it comes to the overall look of the project, including the shots, the lighting and the acting.

Va$htie director:

The Cinematographer, also known as the Director of Photography, is the head of the camera department. They are in charge of all camera operators, camera assistants and the lighting crew. Their job is to capture the photographic impression of the directors' vision. The director gives his/her vision of a particular shot to the DP, who then translates that idea into an image the camera can capture within the frame. The DP gets a "shot-list" from the director and then analyzes how each scene should be lit, what filters and lenses to use, and the positioning of the camera. LYNCHO14@GMAIL.COM

“how & why i support obama”

Qasim basir writes: I could sit here all day writing down the reasons why I support Barack

Obama. In my lifetime, I don't remember another person who has been more influential. He is intelligent, logical, strong, honest, dedicated, honorable, passionate and, most of all, inspirational. He has inspired me, a usually self-motivated individual, to try to be a better person overall. I sometimes find myself in situations where I have a choice do my best or just get by. And something in me refers back to something Obama may have said about making this country better. Then I realize that if I can do better in all of my endeavors and we all do the same as a collective nation, this place can actually get better. How basic does that seem? Well, that's how Obama makes things: basic, logical and attainable. And this is fact, he is the only one right now who can take this country in a fundamentally new, positive direction. As a filmmaker, I wanted to do something to support this man that I truly admired. So I stayed awake one night and drafted up some ideas for a short film series. This series would capture the quality that I most appreciated about Barack Obama, The Inspiration of Barack: "Yes We Can" Film Series. I took the series on a tour to several different cities while Obama was making his run for the White House. The “Yes We Can Tour” was created to encourage people to get involved with the movement and remind people of the importance of doing their part. I don’t know exactly how many people my team and I affected, but I do know Obama is now our President. And the formula he used to come to power is the same one that we will have to use to pull this country together. Hard work, sacrifice and most of all, hope.

UP CLOSE

an actor’s commitment

heath ledger by Fajr Strong

As an actor you must lose yourself to the world of your character for honest results. Research and the practice of certain "methods" help the actor polish his or her craft. Heath Ledger was an admirable embodiment of the acting craft at it's best.

His 1999 debut in "10 Things I Hate About You" quickly put him on the map. Heath was versatile enough to avoid the teenybopper stereotype. He accepted challenging projects that offered the sort of character work worthy enough to gain attention for 33 nominations and 17 wins. Including The Golden Globe for his highly anticipated interpretation of the Joker in "The Dark Night."

In the 2008 summer blockbuster, Heath took on a role so intense, many speculate this it may have been the task that sent him over the edge. Dark Night costar, Maggie Gyllenhaal is quoted, "what he does in the movie is very unusual even for the most incredible actors. He had that thing happen where you hit that stride, and you are absolutely free, you can do no wrong."

Admired by colleagues and fans alike, his most memorable nomination came in 2005 when the Academy recognized his controversial portrayal of a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. The role solidified his presence as a Hollywood heavyweight. A healthy approach to your craft sustains longevity and fun in your career. But please remember to pace yourself and step outside of character long enough to remember who you are.

ISSUES

“ water the gift of life

Of the 680 million people living in Sub-Saharan Africa, nearly onehalf of them are living without access to a disease and parasite free water source

build a well

Clean water: an element that runs freely through our faucets, showers, and even toilets. Most individuals are unaware of how fortunate we are for such accessibility. In other countries it's custom to walk miles at a time to retrieve contaminated water; the same water source shared with animals. Such conditions cause illness and create environments to harbor disease. Many of these diseases could have been avoided with a clean water supply. Throughout the world this is simply a factor of life.

In 2006, Drop In the Bucket, a non-profit organization, was created to provide water wells throughout Africa. It started with a few good samaritans from Los Angeles who thought they could make a difference. On their first trip to Africa, they came face to face with children, sick, from drinking disease-infested water. They immediately began work on their first two wells. Drop in the bucket is proud to spend the bare minimum on operating costs. Workers pay for their own travel accommodations and receive no compensation for their time.

save a life

In a world littered with suffering, Drop in the Bucket offers an immediate and attainable solution for those looking to make a change for the better. You can even name a well after yourself or your organization and leave your mark. What better gift to give, than the gift of life. For more information, visit www.dropinthebucket.org
