Welcome to the digital version of The Bikers Trading Post

Rambling Thoughts

The Bikers Trading Post is now being published monthly as a digital magazine. We have been making some big changes. Now, instead of being a one man show, we're teaming up with others to make us more of a community magazine. This will let us cover more and publish a lot more of all the events that you are going to. We are a local publication and dealing with local happenings. Yes, we will cover a few of the bigger shows that a lot of you follow but we understand you have no interest in a poker run in Kentucky. We will not be limited to the per page cost like in the normal printed publications. You can download the whole magazine and save it and you may take it to a printer and print part of it or all of it. This month we are putting in two calendars, one vertical and one horizontal. Most of the articles will have links and they are in red and labeled. If you click on that link it will take you to the albums of photos or a video slideshow from the event and you are welcome to right click in them to download and use for any non-commercial use. Please give us credit if you put them on your pages. You can take them and get prints of you and your friends if they were at one of the events that we covered. We have a facebook page that if you click on it will take you to a current list of the events that are happening in our area. At this time we have listed over 415 events past and present for 2015 in Western Pa. https://www.facebook.com/thebikerstradingpost Please check it out and friend us, and please feel free to share anything on that page you want to. Now with that all being said this is a biker magazine. We are covering the bike life, style and events. We work hard to try and keep things clean but if something is happening in the background and we miss it, OH WELL. If you are offended by off color jokes and photos of people getting crazy and photos of girls on bikes you are at the wrong place.

The past few months have been the greatest for events in Western Pa. I have had the opportunity to do many things, meet many new people, and see so many old acquaintances along the way. Every month we grow and grow. I am getting several new subscriptions almost every day. Up at Roar on the Shore I was hanging over the balcony taking some crowd shots and I had a guy come up tome and ask, are you with The Bikers Trading Post, and what is your name? He follows the magazine to keep up with all the local events. If you know of anything happening, please let us know so we can spread the word, or if you are at an event that we are not covering and you want to send photos and a short description of the event, we will consider placing it in the magazine. Last month we did our first guest model and things went really well with that. We had a lot of great comments, and a lot of interest. This month we will be doing it again, and if you have a photographer or know one that wants to submit photos of a bike with a model, please let us know. I have plans for several new features that we will be working on to do as a monthly feature and plan on just keep on growing. Also we are looking for some specialty bike shops in the area. We have some ideas that we are wanting to work on. Once again we are read by more people then any printed bike magazine covering Western Pa. And we continuing to grow. We are looking for people who want to make a few bucks doing what they love to do and covering events if you want to contact us the best way is e-mail at thebikerstradingpost@gmail.com. Also make sure you check out our bike night listing, as it is changed whenever we get new listings.

Anyone that is going to an event and wants to share it with us please e-mail us at thebikerstradingpost@gmail.com. If you Happy riding and keep the wheels on the ground. would like to join us in sales, covering events and getting published please let us know.

Thunder in the Burg 2016 This is the 10th anniversary of Thunder in the Burg. I could not think of a better day weather wise than they had. The only thing that held me back was being a little under the weather that day. Thunder in the Burg is an outdoor event that is held on the street and in the parking lot across from the Burg Bar in West Pittsburg. It is a great fundraiser for A.B.A.T.E. of Lawrence County and is an even bigger fun raiser. It is an all ages event and they have vendors, food, bands and a dunking booth along with a corn hole tournament. The bands this year were Doug and Dave, Bar Stool Mountain, and Thick as Thieves. It is always a good time with a lot of really great people

Irish Motorcycle Riders One fine summer s evening, Paddy, Mick and Liam are riding back home from the bar, all three of them on Paddy s motorcycle. Of course, they get stopped by a cop who says to them, This motorcycle is only licensed to carry two people, and there are three of you. One of you will have to get off and walk. Three of us? says Paddy as he turns to Mick. Jeez, what happened to Rory and Niall?

Where to Park the Bike What the hell do you think you re doing? I yelled at my wife. You ve reversed the car over my motorbike! It s your own fault, she said. You re the one that left it in the shed. Yesterday I got stuck behind a young girl riding a horse. No matter what I did, I just couldn t get past her. I was tooting my horn, and hanging out the window yelling at her. She still wouldn t let me past.

The Frustrated Biker There was a guy on a motorcycle behind me and he was waving too. I was getting so wound up and frustrated. It s people like you that cause accidents! I shouted. Eventually, I just couldn t take any more so I looked around to make sure the coast was clear and then I jumped off the carousel.

Syria Motor Corps Poker Run On July 10, I arrived at the Syria Shrine Center bright and early, while there were less than 100 bikes on location. I was surprised, after the turnout they had the years before, but we weren't disappointed. The weather was absolutely perfect, sunny and warm without being too hot or humid, and bikes continued to file in all the way up until the run was ready to take off. We found Mark Slupe, the president of the Syria Motor Corps, and he was happy to talk with us about the event. Mark pointed out that there are good years, and bad years, but promised, "I'm not gonna quit until it's the elite run in Western Pennsylvania." Based on what we've seen in the last couple years, this truly is the elite run for the area. The Syria Motor Corps who organize the event are part of the Shriners non-profit organization dedicated to funding hospital care for children in the form of 22 nonprofit medical facilities spread across North America. Although we cover a lot of non-profit and charity events and organizations, this group of guys who dedicate their time, energy, and money to raising as much money as they do for children is just incredible. Although many associate Shriners with men in tiny cars, or wearing tasseled hats, or with ads on TV asking for $19 to make a difference in a child's life, most don't realize how incredible the organization is, or worry that these are gimmicks and a scam. Shriners Hospitals treat children with no out of pocket costs. These are hospitals staffed with great doctors, people who want to make a difference in the world, who want to help children without insurance companies getting in the way determining what is and isn t going to be covered. Although the hospitals do bill insurance companies if their patients have insurance, they don t charge any bills beyond what insurance will cover regardless of actual costs of treatment, and accept patients with no consideration of race, religion, or relationship to the organization. These are hospitals that PCPs and other doctors send children to for the best treatment available, staffed with the best doctors available. This year, 425 motorcycles participated in the run, with around another 50 passengers, and more than 75 volunteers. They sold more than $2,000 worth of raffle tickets, and at the end of the day, raised more than $16,000. Mark told me that at their meeting at the end of July, he was proud to tell the guys that they have raised and donated more than $25,000 to the Shriners Hospitals in Cincinnati, Erie, and Philadelphia this year alone. Mark told me that he personally visited these hospitals, remarking that it was 5 down, and 17 to go, expressing that he has a personal goal of visiting all 22 hospitals.

Syria Motor Corps Poker Run So, who raises this money? According to Slupe, it's everybody in the Syria Motor Corps that does it. They are a group of people who want to do good, with very little corporate sponsorship. Z&M Harley-Davidson donated a rear tire, which is the largest corporate donation to the annual run. Gatto and Three Rivers Harley-Davidson also donated gift bags, and Herr s donated potato chips to the event. Aside from those, everything else was a private donation, and none of it would be possible without the efforts of the Motor Corps. This year, the Butler County Sheriff helped organize private donations from several people in the area to be auctioned off. There was a signed photograph of James Harrison valued at $500 donated by somebody not affiliated with the Shriners at all, as well as Penguins tickets, and front row Pirates tickets. Chuck Varner, of Ford City got lucky on the 50/50 raffle, winning $1,060. He wrote to the Syria Motor Corps afterwards saying that he immediately thought of all the ways he could use the money, from fixing his car to things he s been trying to save for. He wrote, But in that moment, that split second, I thought all my needs and wants don't compare to the needs and wants of all those kids you're trying to help. Everyone at the stage is shaking my hand, telling me congratulations. All I can think to say is Give it to the kids . And with that, he donated all of it back, turning the 50/50 raffle into a $2120 donation to Shriners Hospital. If any of you know Chuck, be sure to thank him, and buy him a drink for his good will! Thanks, Chuck. You re one of the good ones! The run was lead with an escort by the Allegheny County Sheriff and several motorcycle officers, and this is always welcome. I wish to take a moment to personally thank all of the law enforcement officers who came out and lent a hand at helping to keep people safe, and to benefit our community. Your efforts are appreciated! When riders got back to the Syria Shrine Center after the gun, there was food and good fun. Abby Abbondanza, lead vocalist for the Hillbilly Way, formerly known as the Povertyneck Hillbillies, was there and was happy to meet several of the children who are patients of Shriners Hospitals, the very kids this run benefits. This is a big event every summer, and I m sure we will only see it grow as time goes on. I can t wait until next year! If anyone would like more information about the organization, check out the Syria Motor Corps on Facebook, or at www.syriamotorcorps.org. Their next event is a car show and cruise, which will be at the Syria Shrine Center on August 21.

Humor to relieve stress So you think you've had a bad day The following is taken from a Florida newspaper: A man was working on his motorcycle on his patio and his wife was in the house in the kitchen. The man was racing the engine on the motorcycle and somehow, the motorcycle slipped into gear. The man, still holding the handlebars, was dragged through a glass patio door and the motorcycle dumped onto the floor inside the house. The wife, hearing the crash, ran into the dining room, and found her husband laying on the floor, cut and bleeding, the motorcycle laying next to him and the patio door shattered. The wife ran to the phone and summoned an ambulance. Because they lived on a fairly large hill, the wife went down the several flights of long steps to the street to direct the paramedics to her husband. After the ambulance arrived and transported the husband to the hospital, the wife uprighted the motorcycle and pushed it outside. Seeing that gas had spilled on the floor, the wife obtained some paper towels, blotted up the gasoline, and threw the towels in the toilet. The husband was treated at the hospital and was released to come home. After arriving home, he looked at the shattered patio door and the damage done to his motorcycle. He became despondent, went into the bathroom, sat on the toilet and smoked a cigarette. After finishing the cigarette, he flipped it between his legs into the toilet bowl while still seated. The wife, who was in the kitchen, heard a loud explosion and her husband screaming. She ran into the bathroom and found her husband laying on the floor. His trousers had been blown away and he was suffering burns on the buttocks, the back of his legs and his groin. The wife again ran to the phone and called for an ambulance. The same ambulance crew was dispatched and his wife met them at the street. The paramedics loaded the husband on the stretcher and began carrying him to the street. While they were going down the stairs to the street accompanied by the wife, one of the paramedics asked the wife how the husband had burned himself. She told them and the paramedics started laughing so hard, one of them tipped the stretcher and dumped the husband out. He fell down the remaining steps and broke his ankle. So, "Is your day as bad as you think?"

Humor to relieve relieve Humor to stress Take what you want A backwoods, mountain-bred, engineering studentWas walking on campus one day when another mountainreared, engineering student rode up on a shiny new motorcycle. "Where did you get such a rockin' bike?" asked the first. The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, 'Take what you want'". The second engineer nodded approvingly. "Good choice, the clothes probably wouldn't have fit".

What's the difference between a Goldwing & a road train?

Oh, about 40 lbs and a stuffed animal. Road trains don't throw sparks going around corners. Road trains "need" all their lights. You can't get a 400 lbs woman in a road train. Road trains will usually pull over to let you by. Road trains don't all look alike. Road trains have to stop at weigh stations. Nobody builds a 3 wheeled road train. Road trains aren't as wide.

The Blonde Joke A blonde, a redhead, and a brunette were all lost in the desert. They found a lamp and rubbed it. A genie popped out and granted them each one wish. The redhead wished to be back home. Poof! She was back home. The brunette wished to be at home with her family. Poof! She was back home with her family. The blonde said, "Awwww, I wish my friends were here."

Harley-Davidson of Erie

Harley-Davidson of Erie Bikefest 2016. 9 Days of rides, music, giveaways and just plain hanging out with a lot of good people. This is everything that anyone would want in a bike event. They started out on Saturday, July 9th with Chrome at Buffalo Wild Wings in Erie. Chrome is a local band that has been really gaining popularity in the biker community. On Sunday they had the MDA Miles for Smiles that was attended by Kenny Sturm, from ErieBikerPhotos.com, you can see his complete collection of photos there and his article and some photos in here. They ended the day with an after party. Monday presented a golf tournament followed by a bike night at Liberty park. From Tuesday till Saturday they had Vendor Village with some great vendors to make your bike and riding complete. Every night brought out great bands, and there were Harley-Davidson demo rides Tuesday through Saturday. Thursday through Saturday had the lovely Amy Bellas doing the Bikini Bike Wash. Friday and Saturday were huge, with a full house both days. I have never seen such a turn out for an event like this. There were bikes up and down the street with every empty parking lot around filled and people waiting to get into Erie HarleyDavidson. Saturday brought the bike show, with some great bikes in attendance and several builders that I know. This is a great event that gives people some extra riding and an opportunity to get out. With it nearing maximum capacity, I am wondering what will happen next year. Knowing these guys, they already have something up their sleeves to make it bigger and better. You can check out some photos from the event

HERE.

2nd Wesley Zablocki Memorial Ride I was not able to get the information from the organizers of this run . This run was on July 9th, one of the nicest days of the year to date. There were so many different events going on that day. I stopped there on my way between several. Enclosed are some of the photos that I did from the stop.

2nd Wesley Zablocki Memorial Ride

Roar on the Shore 2016 was no disappointment this year. Based in downtown Erie, it is a free rally that is a fundraiser for local charities. To date they have donated $800,000, and have added an estimated $25 million to the local economy. The charity for 2016 was Erie Homes for Children and Adults. It is an continuously growing event that always has great headliners, a bunch of free events and and some free celebrity meet and greets. It has a huge community impact bringing people in from all over the country. The downtown area is booming during that time with 62 taverns and restaurants within blocks of the center. Bringin in the Roar Parade is is the largest ride, starting at Presque Isle Downs & Casino with thousands of riders from across the country, for the biggest bike parade in Roar on the Shore history. The pre-parade gathering featured a concert, singing of the National Anthem by Audra Miller and a blessing of the bikes by Vince Rizzone. A 30-by-60-foot display of the Stars and Stripes, sponsored by (Erie PA s Old Glory, Erie County Chapter, National Flag Foundation), was displayed at 10th and State streets to greet riders as they arrive in the Hub. Every bike received a complimentary American flag for their bike, sponsored by Annin Flagmakers. The official number for the parade is 4,800, with another 300 bikes or so jumped into the parade from the parade route. It is estimated that there were 22,000 spectators and they gave out over 13,000 American flags.

In the five day event they estimated a crowd of 165,000 people with many participating in the 10 rides organized by the event. There were about 100 vendors with just about anything you would want for your riding experience and plenty of entertainment. They had four headline groups. Jackyl, a band that is very well known in the biker community. Vince Neil is a former Indy Racer and best known as the lead vocalist of heavy metal band Mรถtley Crue. Vixen is an all-female American rock band that achieved success during the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of the Los Angeles, California glam metal scene. They had hits that they played including Edge of a Broken Heart, Love Made Me, How Much Love, Love Is a Killer and Not a Minute Too Soon. To me the the highlight of the entertainment was Quiet Riot. They are an American heavy metal band best known for their hit singles Metal Health and Cum on Feel the Noize. If you grew up in the 70 s, you would know that group well. Roar on the Shore is a very relaxed event that has some of the nicest bikes in Western Pa attending and the largest number of bikes of any event in the area. You can spend hours walking looking at bikes checking out the vendors and taking test rides. It easily takes two days to cover everything. It was a great time to hang out with some old friends and also meet many new ones. I am already looking forward to the 2017 Roar on the Shore so mark your calendars for July 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16, 2017.

Thunder in the Cascades

This year brought us the 22nd annual Thunder in the Cascades that was held at the Lawrence County Fair Grounds. After the last two years of the worst weather that you could have for a bike event it had to be about the best weather I have seen in years. It did get a little chilly for sleeping on the ground at nights but aside from that you could not beat it. I did not go out for the early bird Wednesday. That gives people an extra day to be a little more relaxed while setting up, and also to listen to the band US 4 Now. The crowd is small on Wednesday, but I heard the band put on a good performance. Thursday is always the main setup day, with people coming in at all times of the day due to some working and some wanting to get an early start on the party. There is a poker run every day and Thursday started off the rally with the vendors opening in the morning, and the Sofa King Cool Band. After the band, the real entertainment starts with the Hot Buns Contest, a LED show and the finishing with the great music of Juvenile Characteristics.

Thunder in the Cascades

Friday is the day I always cant wait for because there is something for everyone. A poker run, a winery ride, and then games, followed by the tattoo contest. As always, there are some great tattoos out there. The Iron Roots band played at 4. They are a classic rock band with a lead singer that was great with the Janis Joplin and Grace Slick music. They were a pleasure to listen to. Then, of course, we can not forget about the wet t-shirt contest that always features some of the most beautiful ladies of Western PA. This year was no exception with the winner being a beautiful young lady from up in Erie. I can never figure where they come up with these beautiful ladies. After the wet tshirt contest Ron gets the mechanical bull wound up for the guys and the girls to try their skills out on. There were some great riders this year along with some really beautiful ladies giving it a try. Friday night finished up with the Ozone Rangers, a ZZ Top tribute band, playing for the rocking and dancing pleasure.

Thunder in the Cascades

Saturday starts off early for the few that did not overindulge on Friday. It starts at the unholy hour of 9 AM with a bike wash and a 10 AM poker run. After that, we get into a normal time of 11 AM for the bike show. Working for national car and motorcycle magazines, I was always told the we have some of the best builds in the world in Western Pa. The quality here showed that to be true. After the bike show was the bike games, and they are my favorite part of the event (except the wet t-shirt contests). There was an excellent turn out of bikes as always. Participants to keep the crowd pleased and it, as always, was very well run. I didn't see any busted bikes or broken bones so that calls it a success. There was the awards followed by the River City Saints. They kept things hopping till the next wet t-shirt contest. I am always surprised on how many new contestants show up for the second day. There again, it was a true winner for all the people watching and the three top contestants split the first prize, The night followed up with Ron entertaining with the mechanical bull, and then the music of Southern Comfort EXP. It was, once again, a great weekend, with the hit for the event being Mustang Sally.
