Hailing from a family of musicians in Chennai, he has trained under Guru V. Lakshminarayana, his grand aunt Guru Rukmini Rajagopalan, Guru Calcutta K.S. Krishnamurthi and more recently, from Nadaswaram maestro Guru S.R.D. Vaidyanathan. Fri 4 NATYASHASTRA UNRAVELLED A talk on Indian Dance Natyashastra is a detailed treatise and handbook on Indian Classical dance and dramatic arts, written by Sage Bharata. The text consists of 36 chapters with 6000 verses which talk in detail on every aspect of performance – stagecraft, makeup, costumes, movements, expressions, genres of acting, musical scales and instruments, and Rasa Theory. Join us as we explore the various aspects described in the Natyashastra and how it informs Indian Aesthetics.

Mon 7 BEAUTY OF SANSKRIT POETRY A CULTURAL STUDY One of the oldest languages of the world, Sanskrit has given a wealth of texts for the human spirit – poetry, religious texts, dramas, et al. Dr. R Ganesh will delve into the poetic beauty and cultural study of several Sanskrit poets such as Vaalmiki, Vyaasa, Kaalidaasa and others. Join us to understand and unravel the nuances of these poetic treasures.

Open to all, including dancers, musicians, artists and academics, his talks are extremely insightful, and significant to those with an interest in the field.

Tue 8 THE ART OF ASHTAVADHANAM Avadhanam literally means the concentration of the mind. It is a Sanskrit literary performance popular from the very ancient days in India. It involves the partial improvisation of poems using specific themes, metres, forms, or words. The true purpose of an Avadhanam event thus is the showcasing, through entertainment, of superior mastery of cognitive capabilities and creativity in multiple modes of intelligence - literature, poetry, music, mathematical calculations, puzzle solving etc. ASHTAVADHANAM is the ability to demonstrate 8-fold concentration, which is tested by 8 pruchakkas (experts).

APPOSITE | ART EXHIBITION Tue 1 - Mon 7 |11am - 7:00 pm | PRESENTED BY ARTSAROMA | Free - All Welcome Artsaroma brings forth mystical and enchanting exhibition of Indian contemporary paintings, aptly named “Apposite”. Just like how every ray shines a little different from other, every artist is a unique individual and every piece of art a unique spectacle. Every stroke of the brush is an epiphany, every color on the canvas a testimony, and every painting a soulful symphony, because every artist writes his own biography with each painting.

The exhibition has been brought forward by Artsaroma, an art organisation headed by Kiran Pundir, who has created a niche for herself as an artist and art curator.Artsaroma has not only pioneered at showcasing extraordinary art and encouraging new talent through their exhibitions, but also displays art by senior artists and art masters from India & Abroad. This exhibition has been curated from the artworks by various artists, belonging to different ethnic backgrounds, cultures, education and experience; a magnanimous feat worthy of praise.

IN CONVERSATION WITH TARA RAJKUMAR OAM - A JOINT PRESENTATION BY THE BHAVAN & AKADEMI Thu 17 | 7:00 pm | £8 / £5 (Conc) Join us for an intimate evening with Akademi’s visionary founder and celebrated Mohiniattam artist, Tara Rajkumar OAM, who visits London from Australia to attend Akademi’s 40th anniversary celebrations. She will be interviewed by Prof Ann David from Roehampton University in a special evening at The Bhavan. She will also be joined by her disciple, Bindu Rajendran, who will perform Tara’s recently created choreography. Tara Rajkumar was the first advisor for dance at The Bhavan, and gave several performances at The Bhavan before and after Akademi was founded.

Kala the arts in association with the Bhavan presents an exhibition touring London that celebrates the heritage of Odissi dance. With 17 free-standing illustrated panels and visual displays including a documentary film featuring the Executive Director of Bhavan Dr Nandakumar, Odissi teachers/dancers, Contemporary artists, Festival Director Eckhard Thiemann, Dr. Anne David and costume; the exhibition follows and celebrates Sushmita Pati and a specially commissioned panel to honour the legacy of Padmashree Sanjukta Panigrahi.

Abhimata is a solo Bharatanatyam presentation by Rukmini Vijaykumar which explores the love in union and separation through the representation of various stories from the Bhagavatam, the Ramayana and the Puranas.

From the temples, through to the courts of royalty and now the concert halls of the modern day, Kathak is one of the most developed dance forms the world over. This particular exhibition will focus on the lineage of the illustrious Jaipur Gharana of Kathak, the various maestros that have made significant contributions to art and also how the tradition is being taken forward in the modern day. The exhibition will consist of artefacts, artwork, photographs, interactive audiovisual installments and much much more! Join us from the 6th to 8th December, 2019 and embark on this journey with us, through the wonderful world of Kathak.
