KEY CLUB

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Happy November! From helping victims of Hurricane Sandy to attending the Fall Rally, Key Clubbers sure had a busy month. As the holidays near, it is important for each and every one of us to make sure that we’re doing our part to help the less fortunate. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, donate your old coats and gently used toys, and collect canned food for people who need it most. These are all the little things we do to make everyone’s winter a little more bearable. Just because there’s no points to be earned, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing them anyway. If you have any suggestions for events and drives Brooklyn Tech Key Club can do, post them in our Facebook group or just shoot me or any of executives an email! We’re here to help make Key Club the best that it can be and it starts with you (the member)! As we’re winding down the service year, it’s almost time for a change in higher office. If you’re seeking to run for LTG or the district board, turn to page 12 for the preliminary steps. Furthermore, while the applications for Brooklyn Tech executive positions aren’t out yet, start thinking about whether or not you would like to run for a position and if so, which? Please continue to send me articles and images. The Beaver Tree depends on your material! You can e-mail me at Sharon@thetechkey.com and send pictures to image@thetechkey.com. Thank you for reading! Yours in the spirit of service, Sharon Cai Bulletin Editor 2012-2013

HURRICANE SANDY CLEAN-UP NOVEMBER 3, 2012

Key Clubbers are always doing their part in cleaning up the community and disasters like Hurricane Sandy only makes us want to do even more. Even though trains and buses weren’t running on time or at all following the aftermath, not even poor MTA transportation could deter Key Clubbers from helping out. Joined with other volunteers across Brooklyn as part of another event in Assemblyman William Colton’s Speak-Up and Clean-Up campaign, everyone chipped in some time and effort to clear the streets of debris and make pathways easier to travel.

On November 3rd, 2012, Key Club and other clubs and organizations gathered at Assemblyman William Colton's office to clean up after Hurricane Sandy. Although many people were not able to attend due to limited MTA service, there was still quite a turnout. Assemblyman Colton also announced that because our efforts in the clean-up before Hurricane Sandy, the areas we cleaned up were barely affected by the hurricane. In this clean-up, we raked up leaves, picked up small tree branches, and other debris that Hurricane Sandy left behind. This was the first time I went out after the hurricane, and it was amazing to see the impact that Hurricane Sandy left on Kings Highway and Bensonhurst. Although the damage was not as great as in low-lying areas, downed wires, fallen tree limbs, and tons of scattered leaves can only show how much more damage was done in greater affected areas. It was great to be helping out in any way after the hurricane. — Sandy Mui

FALL RALLY NOVEMBER 10, 2012

Held at Edward R. Murrow High School, the 2012 Fall Rally saw the attendance of over a hundred members from divisions 8, 9, 10, and 11. We raised $1200 for the Eliminate Project in just one day! Just goes to show that while $10 does not seem like a lot, hundreds of $10 bills definitely add up. Members spent the day attending workshops that covered topics ranging from icebreakers to the district projects to leading effective meetings to higher office positions. It was the perfect opportunity for both old and new members to learn more about Key Club. I attended the Fall Rally last year as well, and it was a fresh experience going again. Not only do we learn new things from the workshops, but we can also make new friends and form bonds with Key Clubbers from other schools. This year, I attended the workshops for district projects, college applications, and the presidential position. At the district projects workshop, I took notes and listened to what various organizations do and how we fundraise for them. The fundraising ideas that were given on the last slide intrigued me because I never thought that we could hold picnics, BBQs, and potlucks for fundraising. At the college applications workshop, I acquired new knowledge about what is to expect for junior and senior year. Although I am only a sophomore and the college applications do not hold as much as significance as it does for upperclassmen, I thought it would be a good idea to get a basic overview before I have to concern myself with college apps next year. The president's workshop was particularly interesting because I didn't think the president had that much work to do. I don't really want to run for higher office, but since the last session was all about higher office positions, I thought it would be interesting to learn about a president's duties. Overall, the Fall Rally was once again a lot of fun and there was great pizza ;)! — Sandy Mui

ZIMBABWE CONTAINER CLEAN-UP NOVEMBER 17, 2012

On November 17th, 2012, Division 9 Key Clubbers gathered at Floyd-Bennett Field to help clean and reorganize the containers that flooded as a result of the storm surge following Hurricane Sandy. One container was filled with 10 inches of water! We helped sort, clean out, and move the boxes to a separate container. These boxes contained mostly school supplies and books. I felt really bad that so many of the books were rendered useless since this is all for a good cause. The books were supposed to be sent to Zimbabwe so that the schools could build libraries for their children. We weren't supposed to be provided with lunch, but since we worked so hard we were rewarded with pizza. I thought that was the BEST PIZZA EVER! After the event, the event coordinators were kind enough to drive us back to Aviators and King's Plaza so that we could take the bus home. The car that I was in was driven by a man named Jay, who happened to be a Brooklyn Tech graduate! He told us stories about back when he was in school, and we were all so caught up in the conversation that he drove past Kings Plaza‌ I guess it really is true that Tech alumni are everywhere! Overall, it was a really great day and I was really happy to have helped out at the event. — Sandy Mui

GIFT WRAPPING EVENT NOVEMBER 23-25, 2012

Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers helped the American Cancer Society out, as part of Relay for Life, at Kings Plaza, by wrapping presents. I covered the first shift for November 23rd and November 24th. We were doing free gift wrapping and collecting donations to fund cancer cure research. I thought the gift wrapping cutter was very intimidating and extremely hard to master. I kept ripping the wrapping paper by accident while trying to cut it perfectly, but I managed to get the hang of it eventually. Other than that, the gift wrapping itself was really fun. Although for the first hour, business was pretty slow, things started to speed up after more shoppers arrived in the mall. It was amazing how many of these people would give donations even though the gift wrapping itself was free. It was nice to help out and indulge in the holiday spirit. — Sandy Mui

My friend, Kelly, and I went to Kings Plaza to wrap gifts for Relay for Life. While most volunteers weren’t really sure where or how to start, the shift leader wasn’t shy at all. He was shouting out "FREE GIFT WRAPPING" and "PLEASE MAKE DONATIONS TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY." I was under the impression that we would be wrapping gifts the organization provided for us, but then I realized that we had to approach shoppers and offer our services. We greeted every passerby and tried to engaged him/her into a friendly conversation, hoping that he/she would make some donations or let us wrap their purchases. I mainly tried to lure the kids in with stickers because I knew that if I got the kid, I got the parents. Though Kelly thought I was being a bit creepy, it didn't matter because it really did work! One parent donated five dollars! Everyone who volunteered soon became involved as well. We were all joking around and having a really good time. That day was made us feel good about ourselves because we were able to raise a sizeable amount for the American Cancer Society, and it’s nice to know that I was able to make a difference. — Fanny Li

NYC AMAZING RACE 2012 NOVEMBER 24, 2012

On Saturday, November 24th, the Amazing Race took place in New York City. I competed with my friends and we named our team The Tributes, consisting of three team members from three different Key Clubs (Tech, Murrow, and Midwood) and my friend's cousin. There were many instances in which we read directions wrong and had to back track, but the most rewarding moment was when we found our first volunteer. We ended up finding all the volunteers and achieved the "water challenge", but we were stuck while trying to find the "NYPD Memorial Wall" because we kept receiving contradictory directions. Getting lost and frustrated didn’t stop us from enjoying the event though and we didn't let 6.5 hours of walking deter us. We created and sung parodies of songs, took pictures, joked around, enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Lower Manhattan, and acquainted ourselves with the various neighborhoods. My teammates and I gained many new experiences, like eating pizza in Washington Square Park while it snowed and walking along the Hudson with intense wind blowing at us. When we got home our legs were ridiculously sore, but overall, it was definitely worth the pain. — Kate Wong

This translates to 555,555 lives saved or protected. Give yourself a pat on the back for your effort. But we are still a long way from being finished: the campaign is still going for another three years. Did you know that if you raised at least $5.40, you would be protecting three lives?
