KEY CLUB

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Congratulations to our newly elected 2013-2014 executive board! I look forward to working with all of you the next service year. I would like to thank all the members that came to the elections, listened to all the candidates speeches, and voted. You guys are the best! To the candidates who were not elected, don’t lose faith! Keep working hard at being the best Key Clubber you can be and wait for our committee leader application to give higher office another shot. Sadly, I have to say this newsletter will be my last. I hope you all enjoyed flipping through my issues and completing the puzzles. I tried my hardest and enjoyed making these for you. I know the next bulletin editor, Doris Liang, will be just as great or maybe even better! (Except she has a lot to live up to, haha! Holy, our 2011-2012 editor, won Distinguished Bulletin Editor, and I think I just set the record of newsletters made with 11.) But she has lots of new ideas for “The Beaver Tree,” and I’m sure you guys are going to love them. Do me a favor and keep on writing articles and taking pictures! Email articles to doris@thetechkey.com. Images can still be sent to image@thetechkey.com. Can’t wait to see what’s going to be in the next issue of “The Beaver Tree.” Thank you for your support and for reading. Yours in the spirit of service, Sharon Cai Bulletin Editor 2012-2013

YOUR EXECUTIVE BOARD 2013-2014

Thank you to everyone who took the initiative to run to be on the executive board next year and congratulations to those who were elected! Here’s to another great service year. PRESIDENT: SHARON CAI Hey guys! So many of you guys know me as your bulletin editor for the 2012-2013 service year. I’m currently a junior in the Social Science Research major. I enjoy playing sports, my favorite being bowling (I’m on the varsity girls’ bowling team!), and I’m a pretty competitive person. I also love to read, do arts and crafts, take pictures, and especially eat. I look forward to meeting more of you guys and making the next service year even better than this one. Don’t be afraid to come up to me and say hi or shoot me an email with any questions you might have about anything! :D

VICE PRESIDENT: EMMA COSTA I was the School Services Committee Leader for the 2012-2013 service year, and I am a junior in the Gateway to Medicine Major. I love dancing, biking, and of course, Key Club! Someday I hope to become a research Neurologist to develop treatments and cures for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disorders. I’m excited for the next service year, and all that we will be able to accomplish together!

SECRETARY: SONIA SAAKIAN I am a junior in the Industrial Design major. I love to ride my bike, and go hiking with my family and friends. I am really excited for the next Key Club service year, and I promise to give all I got and try my best at being secretary!

TREASURER: FANNY LI Hi guys! I love eating and sleeping, as cliché as it sounds, but I really do! I didn’t really appreciate sleep until I entered high school, but now, I’m treasuring every moment (get it?). Also, I really do value friendship and also love to laugh, so if any of you have some jokes, corny or not, lay it on me! In addition, I will appear timid when I first meet someone, I actually do talk a lot. I hope that by reading this you now know a little more about me :) I will definitely try my best and giving my all in everything I do in Key Club next year.

BULLETIN EDITOR: DORIS LIANG Hey guys! I am currently a junior in the Law and Society major. When I have free time, I like to relax and EAT! Honestly, I cannot go a day without eating at least 5 times. My plan for next year is to give you more opportunities to earn points by creating a "Dear Editor" section and a "Pick Me Up" joke section. Feel free to send me your problems or send me some corny jokes for extra points! I look forward to entertaining you guys through the newsletter!

WEBMASTER: AMANDA LIU Hey Key Clubbers! I love photography and my DSLR is my (expensive) baby. Monsters Inc and Inception are the best movies of all time; thumbs up if you agree!

RELAY FOR LIFE KICKOFF

Relay for Life events all around the world in an effort for communities to come together to honor cancer survivors, remember those who passed, and fight back. Funds raised through RFL are invested in research, care, and services for cancer patients and their families. The American Cancer Society is the leading organization in the world that works to combat cancer. You can learn more about RFL on www.relayforlife.org. Who do you relay for?

On February 22nd, the Relay for Life Kickoff was held at Brooklyn Tech. Though I arrived late to the kickoff due to 10th gym, I was able to hear a lot of inspiring stories and watch some of the entertainment. After hearing so many inspiring stories, I realized that we have so many caring people at Tech. I thought that Mr. Williams' speech was the most inspiring. It was interesting how he started off his story - with the phrase, "I am not a survivor of cancer." His interpretation of that line was amazing. I'm so sorry that fate caused his mother to be taken away from him, but I am amazed at how Mr. Williams interpreted that situation. Sometimes, fate may not cause the happiest and best of all things, but I also choose to believe that that is how it's supposed to happen. The kickoff really changed my outlook and perspective on people in our school and on life, in general. I couldn't help but feel sympathetic for everyone who spoke that night. I'm lucky to not have any family members nor close friends suffering or who have died from this terrible disease. I wish everyone battling cancer the best and hope that they're able to overcome it! — Sandy Mui The Relay for Life Kickoff was an event that really moved me. At first, school services committee helped give out pamphlets to all of the people coming into the auditorium to watch the event. When we all sat down, one by one, students and teachers came up and shared their personal stories about cancer. I believe that it was very brave of them to do this because I know that it’s hard to talk about something like that. Their stories were extremely sad and bought many people to tears. Before this event, I didn’t really realize how big of an epidemic cancer really is, but now I know that it’s no joke. It’s a serious disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Because of this event, I am inspired to raise as much money for cancer this month! — Hanna Yacubov

RELAY FOR LIFE KICKOFF CONT’D FEBRURARY 2013

On Friday, February 22nd, 2013, I attended the Relay for Life kickoff event. Since my committee school services was helping out, I was a bit more involved. To start off, students such as myself were asked to give out information pamphlets and symbol cards to incoming students, teachers, and guests. After, we went up to the balcony and were ready to watch the event. First, there was an activity where the cards handed out stood for various cancer statistics, which were very shocking. Then, a few students and teachers were open to share their family member’s cancer stories. Mr. Kaelin and Mr. Williams delivered inspiring speeches! To lift the tension and sadness, there were performances and the premiere of the Harlem Shake BTHS! In the end, people in my committee threw down balloons into the audience with cancer facts and statistics. Overall, I am glad I went to this event since I was able to learn a lot about the reality of cancer, and see some very good dances as a bonus. I can’t wait to go to the next Relay for Life kickoff!! — Michael Yacubov

MILLIONS OF TREES NYC EVENT

MillionTreesNYC is a citywide, public-private program that has the goal of planting and caring for one million new trees across the five boroughs over the next decade. So far we have planted 662,111 trees and counting! Through this program, NYC can increase its urban forest and improve the quality of life. Did you know that the most common street trees in NYC are the London planetree and the Norway maple? Or that the tallest tree (133.8 feet) is located in Alley Pond Park, Queens? You can learn more and get involved at www.milliontreesnyc.org!

On February 23rd, Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers gathered with other volunteers in East New York to help out with the Million Trees NYC initiative. It was raining extremely hard that day, making the weather conditions colder and unbearable. However, it was pretty nifty to be out caring for trees. The event reminded me a lot of Mulchfest because we did many of the same tasks, leaving out the need to carry trees since the mulch was already prepared for us. Some of the mulch was even the same color as the mulch from Mulchfest. For the two hours we were there, we pulled weeds out of a few trees and spread mulch around them. The park crew was even nice enough to give us some freebies - various seeds, a few pamphlets about trees, and even a MillionTreesNYC membership card! I had a really great time :) — Sandy Mui

Million Trees NYC was an event were we got together to try and help out some of the trees planted by the city. It took place on New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn. When we arrived, the place was very dirty and the trees needed some nurturing. We got a 30 minute lesson by the instructors and then we got to work! First, we started off my cleaning up all of the garbage. Then, we got rid of all the weeds around the trees. We shoveled buckets of fine mulch and spread it on the soil around the trees. Afterwards, we spread another layer of course mulch. The heads of the event were really polite and even thanked us by giving us flower seeds and a watering bucket. It felt good to help out the environment! — Hanna Yacubov

MILLIONS OF TREES NYC EVENT CONT’D JANUARY 12, 2012

On Saturday, February 23rd, 2013, I attended the million trees event. Although the weather wasn’t the best, we were still able to have fun! First, some older volunteers demonstrated how to apply mulch properly to a tree. Soon, it was time for the volunteers to do it! First, we broke off into groups of 5-6, and started to rip out the weeds from the areas around the trees. After, we put heavy buckets of enriched soil on top of the already existing soil. After doing this to countless trees, it was time for the mulch! But, volunteers still had to strenuously fill buckets with mulch and carry them to the destination. To make the buckets lighter, we formed circle and carried buckets in a circle formation! After about 2 hours of this, we took off our gloves and took a breath. Volunteers were given watering buckets, flower seeds, and brochures/information pamphlets on how to help out with NYC trees and recreation. I am glad that I went to this event because I was able to help out the trees in the local community. Trees are an important part of survival, especially in NYC! Also, volunteers were able to bond with friends and have fun! — Michael Yacubov
