Benefits of a High-Frequency Facial
A High Frequency facial is a non-invasive skincare treatment that uses a gentle electrical current to improve the overall health and appearance of the skin. Here are some benefits of a High Frequency facial:
Acne Reduction: High-Frequency facials are effective for reducing acne and preventing future breakouts. The electrical current helps to kill bacteria on the skin, reduce inflammation, and shrink enlarged pores
Improved Circulation: The electrical current used in HighFrequency facials helps to improve circulation and oxygenation of the skin, which can lead to a brighter, more youthful complexion.
Skin Tightening: High-Frequency facials can help to tighten and tone the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Increased Lymphatic Drainage: The gentle pulsating current of a High Frequency facial can stimulate lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce puffiness and dark circles under the eyes.
Improved Product Penetration: High-Frequency facials can help to improve the penetration of skincare products into the skin, enhancing their effectiveness.
Overall Skin Health: High-Frequency facials can help to improve the overall health of the skin by increasing circulation, reducing inflammation, and promoting cellular regeneration.
What is a High-Frequency Facial, and what does it do?
A High-Frequency facial treatment is a type of skincare procedure that uses a low-voltage, high-frequency electrical current to treat various skin issues. During the treatment, a glass electrode is passed over the skin, creating a mild electrical current that generates heat and oxygen in the skin. The High-Frequency facial treatment has several benefits, including:
Reducing Acne: The treatment helps to kill the bacteria that cause acne, and it also helps to reduce inflammation and redness.
Boosting Collagen Production: The high-frequency electrical current stimulates collagen production, which helps to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Improving Blood Circulation: The treatment helps to improve blood circulation in the skin, which helps to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, resulting in healthier-looking skin
Treating Dark Circles and Puffiness: The electrical current helps to improve lymphatic drainage, which can reduce puffiness and dark circles under the eyes.
A High-Frequency facial treatment can help improve the skin's appearance and health, making it look more youthful and radiant. However, consulting with a skincare professional before undergoing new facial treatments is essential to ensure it is safe for your skin type and condition.
The structure of the skin
Our skin is estimated to comprise around 70 trillion skin cells, making it the body's largest organ. It gives us our shape by supporting our internal organs, bones, and blood and provides a waterproof covering. The thickness of the skin can vary. The thinnest skin is around the eyes and eyelids, approximately 0.5mm. The thickest skin is found on the soles of the feet and can be up to 4mm in thickness The epidermis is vascular, nourished by diffusion from the dermis below it.
The epidermis is made up of six layers, each plays a different part, and these layers are called
Stratum Germinativum
This is the deepest layer of the epidermis, also known as the Stratum Basale. It is within this layer that a process called mitosis takes place. Mitosis means cell division, and that’s precisely what happens The cells divide, making more new fresh, plump cells When the cell is first created, it is here that they are at their most receptive. As this process of mitosis happens, the older cells move upwards through the layers toward the surface In this layer, blood vessels connect to the dermis, where, through deep product penetration to the epidermis, we can communicate with the dermis via this layer The Stratum Germinativum also contains melanocytes; these melanin-producing cells provide the body with its natural protection against harmful UV rays.
Stratum Spinosum
It is here where the first stage of keratinization takes place. Cells are pushed up from the Stratum Germinativum and begin to flatten slightly, then start to synthesize keratin This layer is also known as the prickle cell layer. Lipids are present in this layer, creating a hydrolipidic barrier between the Stratum Granulosum and the Stratum Lucidum, which prevents dehydration
Stratum Granulosum
Also called the granular layer, keratinization continues in this layer. The nucleus within the cells becomes void and starts to fill with keratin. The cells flatten further and continue to move up into the next layer.
Stratum Lucidium
This transparent layer has 2-3 layers of irregular clear flat cells
The Stratum Lucidium only tends to be found in thicker skin, like on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands.
Stratum Corneum
This layer comprises between 15-20 layers of completely flattened cells These cells are full of the protein keratin This is the last part of the life cycle of the cell, which will eventually be shed from the skin's surface. The keratin within these flattened cells helps to absorb water, helping to keep the skin hydrated and preventing moisture from evaporating.
Stratum Disjunctum
This is the outermost layer and is part of the stratum corneum. The dead skin cells from this layer are shed naturally over time. We lose between 30,000- 40,000 dead skin cells from this surface daily. Therefore the skin is constantly renewing itself. The desquamation process, unfortunately, slows over time the older we get. The renewal of skin cells, or Keratinization, on average, takes 28 days. However, after age 36, your age represents the number of days the keratinization process takes.
Function - Epidermis
The whole process of a single cell moving up through the layers of the skin takes approximately 28 days. The epidermis is connected to the dermis by an undulating surface, due to this undulating surface; it gives a larger surface area where all biological changes and nutritional exchange can take place. As we age, the epidermis and dermis separate, causing all chemical reactions and processes to slow down dramatically. A classic example of this would be skin healing. When we are young, cutting or grazing the skin heals quickly without too much trouble. However, the healing process can take much longer as we age, making the skin susceptible to infection Therefore, as we age, ensuring we take care of our skin and treat it correctly is even more critical.
The epidermis has chemical protection called the acid mantle on its surface. The acid mantle comprises sweat and sebum, a fungal and bacterial deterrent. The acidity of the skin helps to neutralize the chemical effects of contaminants. This is why skincare products are slightly acidic not to disrupt the skin's balance. Free radicals constantly attack our skin and can weaken this natural barrier; this is why protecting our skin from the sun is essential
Skin Structure - The Dermis
Within the dermis there are two layers, the lower layer is called the reticular layer, it is this layer that gives the skin its overall strength and elasticity, it has coarser elastin fibers and denser collagen bundles.
Above the reticular layer is called the papillary layer. This layer contains smaller looser collagen and elastin fibers This layer has a rich blood and nerve supply, providing the epidermis's basal layer (or Stratum Germinativum) with sensation and nutrients.
Function - The Dermis
Within the dermis are several specialized cells with important functions to carry out. Eccrine glands are the primary sweat glands of the human body; they produce a clear, odorless substance consisting mainly of water Hair follicles are also found in this layer Attached to the hair follicles are little muscles called erector pili. These muscles lift the hair when the body gets cold to trap warm air and retain heat; as expected, the muscles relax to flatten the hair to cool the body.
Nerves are also located in the dermis and enable the body to respond to pain, temperature, touch, and pressure
The proteins collagen and elastin are found in both layers of the dermis, but both have different effects on the body – Collagen –Maintains the tone and structure of the skin because the molecules are rigid and resistant to stretching. It comprises three polypeptide chains wrapped around one another as a triple helix Collagen is formed in fibroblasts within the dermis, which can break down within the skin. The main cause of this is due to the enzyme Collagenase. This breaks down old collagen at a precise rate. However, this rate speeds up with sun damage, exposure to free radicals, age, and UVA exposure (which is an inhibitor).
Elastin
It gives our skin resilience, keeping it toned, tight, and springy. Like collagen, it is produced by fibroblasts and forms a network of elastic tissue The breakdown of elastin is what causes the skin to sag
Again, like collagen, elastin can also breakdown. The enzyme elastase is responsible for this breakdown under normal conditions. However, with a free radical attack, advanced aging, and sun exposure, this breaking down process will speed up, resulting in an increased loss of elasticity within the skin.
Getting started with High Frequency
What is High Frequency?
High frequency (the Tesla high-frequency current) was first developed in the late 1800s by renowned scientist Nikola Tesla.
While it offers several functions, before the invention of ‘modern’ antibiotics, it was primarily used for medical purposes such as treating strep throat and other infections. In the 1970s, European salons discovered the cosmetic and healing benefits of highfrequency electrical stimulation on the skin, and by 1980, the technology had become widely used by skin care professionals.
How Does High-Frequency Work on the Skin?
Generally, high-frequency machines use a Perspex electrode to treat various face and body contours. When applied to the skin's surface, a mild electrical current passes through a neon or argon gas-filled electrode, causing it to emit a subtle glow of neon red/orange or violet/blue and buzzing noise.

Rapid Oscillating Alternating Current
High frequency operates on a rapid oscillating alternating current. A current will travel up and down in waves. This movement (up and down) is called an oscillating movement. High frequency operates at around 250’000hz This means the current oscillates up and down 250’000 times per second. Therefore each oscillation is very tiny, effectively making high frequency, a very superficial treatment only penetrating no deeper than the epidermis The current also alternates between positive (at the peak of the oscillation) and negative (at the bottom).
Traditionally, acne-prone skin is treated with violet, and aging skin is treated with red. However, recent studies show that both are effective regardless of the skincare concern. During the highfrequency treatment, enriched oxygen molecules produce an anti-bacterial action and a “natural” thermal issue warming. This reaction helps blood vessels push away toxins while the skin cells are enriched with nutrients This, in turn, increases blood circulation and cell renewal, which supports increased levels of collagen and elastin. The skin feels instantly energized and noticeably softer after just one treatment High frequency has proven effective on almost any skin lesion, from acne and burns to waxing procedures and cold sores. High-frequency facials are considered a safe, gentle, and therapeutic approach to skin rejuvenation, quick healing, and restoring skin health.
Selecting the right electrodes
Various High-Frequency electrodes can be used for different areas of the face and body. Here are some examples:
Mushroom Electrode: This electrode has a rounded top and is often used for treating acne, reducing inflammation, and healing wounds. It is ideal for small areas, such as the nose and chin.
Spoon Tongue Electrode: This electrode has a flat, spoonshaped tip and is ideal for treating sensitive areas around the eyes. It can help reduce puffiness and dark circles and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Comb Electrode: This electrode has multiple teeth and is ideal for stimulating hair growth and treating the scalp It can also be used on larger body areas, such as the back and arms, to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
Selecting the right electrodes for a High-Frequency facial treatment can be important for achieving the desired results and ensuring safety during the procedure Here are some factors to consider when choosing electrodes for a High-Frequency facial treatment:
Skin Type: Different electrodes are designed for specific skin types For example, a small mushroom-shaped electrode is ideal for targeting specific areas, while a larger comb electrode is better suited for larger areas of the face or body. A flat, spoon-shaped electrode is better for more sensitive skin
Treatment Area: Consider the area of the face or body you want to treat Some electrodes are designed specifically for the face, while others are better suited for the body.
Treatment Goals: Different electrodes produce different effects. For example, a mushroom electrode is best for reducing inflammation and treating acne, while a rake electrode is good for increasing circulation and reducing puffiness.
Electrical Current: Consider the intensity of the electrical current used during the treatment. Some electrodes are designed for higher current levels, while others are more suited for lower levels.
Care of Electrodes
After each treatment, the electrodes must be wiped with an antiseptic solution, dried, and placed in a sanitizer. Glass electrodes are usually made of Perspex glass This makes them tougher than normal glass and means they won’t shatter if broken. It does not make them indestructible!
Saturation
Used for Direct High Frequency facial and bodywork, particularly useful for larger areas, i e , the back Also used for sparking treatments. This electrode is used for Direct High-Frequency facial treatments and is ideal for working on difficult areas, such as around the nose and ears. Also used for sparking treatments. This Direct High-Frequency electrode is specifically contoured for working on the neck area, but it also can be used on any curved area, i.e., arms and shoulders. This electrode is used for Indirect High Frequency The metal spiral inside the glass ensures that only a gentle current is required for maximum effect.
Application of Direct High Frequency
Direct High Frequency is used on the face and body to treat Drying, Antibacterial, and Germicidal. It is ideal for oily skin. However, it stimulates the sebaceous glands for 2 to 3 minutes. Because the Ozone is given out at such a low intensity, it only becomes drying after this time. Therefore, Direct High Frequency can be used to treat ALL skins.
We suggest adjusting the timings to suit the skin type you are working on:
Dry Skin: 2-3 minutes
Normal/Combination Skin: 5 Minutes
Oily Skin: 7 minutes
We recommend the use of Cream when performing Direct High Frequency. A 50p-sized amount is enough to cover the whole face and neck Apply with fingers or a mask brush The active ingredient is Sodium Perborate. This solid form of oxygen reacts when it comes into contact with heat and moisture. It then penetrates the skin, giving the skin “ a breath of fresh air.”
Gauze is recommended over the top of the cream, as it makes the Ozone work harder by creating a minute gap between the electrode and the skin. It also provides a uniform layer over which the electrode can be passed freely
Intensity: Not more than “1 o ’clock (this may vary depending on individual machines work with the machine manual)” on the dial, There are several electrodes available for use with Direct High Frequency:
Effects of Direct High Frequency Treatments
Warms and softens tissues Increases metabolism Improves skin texture Gives a germicidal effect Limits sebaceous secretions Dries and heals pustular infections
Sparking
High-Frequency sparkling, or High-Frequency sparking, is used in facial treatments. It involves creating a small electrical arc between the electrode and the skin, which produces a sparking or crackling sound and a faint violet or orange glow.
The High Frequency sparking technique is used to treat acne-prone or congested skin The electrical arc creates ozone gas, which sterilizes the skin and can help kill bacteria that cause acne. The electrical current also stimulates circulation and helps to promote lymphatic drainage, reducing puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. The High Frequency sparking technique typically uses a glass electrode with a pointed tip, such as a mushroom or rod electrode. The electrode is held slightly above the skin and moved in mall circular or tapping motions over the treatment area The sparking sound and glow are normal and indicate that the electrical current is effectively sterilizing the skin.
Sparking is possible with Direct High Frequency. This creates a larger gap between the skin and the electrode, creating a “lightning bolt ” of Ultra Violet light, which is antibacterial, and effectively kills germs in a specific area. Only use the Small Bulb Electrode. Position it on its side, directly over the area to be sparked. Lift the electrode off the skin, following these guidelines:
Remove any gauze
Position the electrode half a centimeter off the skin
Apply no more than 3 sparks in one area A low intensity (No more than “9 o ’clock (this may vary depending on individual machines work with the machine manual)” on the dial)
If sparking is needed over a large area, it is possible to use double or triple the thickness of the gauze and work over the area in this way, creating lots of sparks as you work.
Direct High Frequency treatment protocol
Remove jewelry from both client and yourself. Cleanse face and neck thoroughly, tone and blot dry. Apply a thin layer of cream to the area to be treated.
To intensify the treatment, apply a clean, sterilized dry gauze over the area (this is not necessary for sparking treatments)
Insert the appropriate electrode firmly into the black handle. Care should be taken when handling glass electrodes
Treatment Duration: 20 minutes contact with the skin, turn down the intensity and switch it off.
Please place the electrode onto the area to be treated and gently turn up the current by turning the intensity dial clockwise until the correct level is reached.
Work over the area, ensuring that the electrode is constantly moving The average treatment is 2-3 minutes for all skin types (warming, increasing circulation) and 5-7 minutes for oily, seborrhoeic, and acne skin (drying and refining)
Ensure that no one area is worked on for longer than 2 - 3 minutes, or tissue sensitivity may result.
When treatment has been completed, with the electrode still in Remove the electrode from the skin
Remove gauze, Apply finishing products.
What to Expect During a High-Frequency Spot Treatment
Be sure to remove any metal jewelry before your high-frequency treatment.
The tool looks like a stick with a little bubble on the end—that bubble is the electrode The electrode produces argon gas and emits a small electrical current
When applied to the skin, it generates oxygen, kills bacteria, and calms inflamed skin for the high-frequency home facial of your dreams. The tool is a safe skin treatment for both cystic and active acne and works to shorten the lifespan of the breakout and prevents future blemishes and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Cut a small piece of gauze, and place it on your face.
Insert the electrode into the wand, place it over the gauze, and turn it on.
Turn up the dial on the wand until you feel a slight tingling sensation, You should feel it, but it should not be painful.
Don’t crank it on too high, or you will dry out the acne too much.
Move the wand over the acne lesion in circular motions, working on each area for no more than three to five minutes You can also ‘spark’ the acne by tapping the tip of the wand on the acne a few times and then moving in a circular motion again.
Once you ’ ve hit all the spots, your high-frequency facial is officially over
Finish by applying your moisturizer and SPF
Effects of Indirect High Frequency Treatments
Warms and softens tissues Increases metabolism Improves skin moisture balance stimulates tissues Increases blood circulation and Increases lymphatic circulation
Direct High Frequency
Indirect High Frequency can be used on all skin types, though it is particularly suited to Dry, Dehydrated, Mature, and Sensitive skin. It can also be used where there is muscular tension, as an aid to warming the therapist’s hands, and to aid relaxation. It is suitable for both face and body use.
Indirect High Frequency requires the use of the Saturator Electrode. The client holds this in their hands. The therapist then applies a massage medium to the treated area and turns up the intensity while keeping in contact with the client
A soothing warmth will be felt where the current is concentrated. This is where the client and therapist are in contact with each other. This warmth will stimulate sebaceous glands, circulation, aid lymphatic drainage, and stimulate skin cells. It is soothing and relaxing, and the massage should reflect this Treatment should NOT be included.
Timing: 10 – 20 minutes
Intensity:
No higher than 1 o ’clock (this may vary depending on individual machines work with the machine manual) on the dial
Always keep at least one finger in contact with the client to ensure the electrical circuit is not broken It is important that both therapist and client remove EVERYTHING metal and that neither party touches anything metal during treatment. This includes the machine's metal casing, metal therapist stools, and metal couch fixing.
Indirect High Frequency treatment protocol
Treatment Duration: 10-20 minutes
Remove jewellery from both client and yourself.
Cleanse face and neck thoroughly, tone and blot dry
Apply a thin layer of cream to area to be treated
Lightly talc clients hand (the one to hold the electrode)
Place indirect electrode (saturator) in high frequency handle
and give to client to hold in relaxed position. Switch on machine (checking intensity is at zero)
Lack of skin sensation
Metal in the area (excessive number of fillings)
Swelling in area Bruising
Cuts or abrasion
Skin infections Hyper-sensitive skin
Clients with a nervous disposition
Couperose skin conditions
*Stimulation of the skin and muscle can cause Botox and dermal fillers to be broken down faster. We are also stimulating a temporarily frozen muscle, which can cause an unusual sensation.
Contraindications
Some clients may notice the following effects. These are all normal reactions if observed in a mild effect. If any effect is noticed excessively it is vital to cease treatments immediately and refer the client to their GP. In this instance, be sure to take photographs, and fill in an accident book in accordance with your insurer’s instruction.
Mild discomfort Erythema (Redness)
Warm, or what appears to be over-sensitized skin
Mild Erythema will disappear a few hours after the treatment though either is rare, and you may want to consider and consult with clients as to whether the treatment is right for them.
