BELLBUOY

Would any member who happens to have copies of these old Annual Reports please let us have sight of them. The team would also appreciate members with memories of our past to contact them with anecdotes, or any sort of artwork (pictures or photographs) that can be used within the book or to display on the property. We are especially interested in old photos of sailing events.
It might seem a long way away, but we are progressing well with the program for our Centennial celebrations. Ex-Commodore, Mr. Dick Stoute, is heading the sailing and other water sports activities planned for next year. Forms are displayed on the notice boards asking members to let us know in which event they might be interested in taking part. Please take a form and return it to the office so Dick can coordinate responses.
Ex-Commodore, Mr. Andrew Hutchinson is leading a team preparing a Centennial book to commemorate our achievement of reaching 100 years of operation. Sir Henry Fraser has been researching our archives and has obtained much interesting information. However, we are trying to source copies of Annual Reports from 1924 to 1928 and 1942 to 1956.
August is probably our quietest month at the Club as many members are away. However, the sea conditions for swimming are perfect right now and those members who are on the island are coming out to enjoy the beautiful, clear, calm and warm sea. I would encourage you all to do so while we get the chance.
Our long-term member, Bill Hoad and Honorable Life member John Still sadly both passed away in July and August respectively. We are featuring their life and achievements, especially their contribution to sailing in Barbados, in this copy of the Bellbuoy. Our condolences to their families and friends.
Bill Hoad was the son of Mr. E. L. G. Teddy Hoad, former Vice Commodore of the Barbados Yacht Club. Bill, like his father played Cricket for the Pickwick Club and was a keen sailor competing at an early age.
Bill and his brother Tony won a bronze medal at The Central American and Caribbean games. He was also a crew member of the famous Morning Mist yacht and Blazin competing in Barbados and at several Caribbean Regattas. Bill was a very keen golfer and played for many years with a group of golfing friends. However, he loved music and played with Sir Emile Straker for a short time.
Bill along with his cousin, Jackie Hoad would play music after the many offshore regatta after parties held in the main bar at the Yacht Club. His theme song was Blue Spanish Eyes, he also named his yacht by the same name.
John Still was a keen sailor, he competed in the Fireball class when dinghy sailing was at its peak at the Club. He subsequently bought The famous Swan Yacht Morning Mist which was previously owned by the late Edmund Bailey and sailed by Bill Tempro.
John continued for many years sailing competitively competing with the likes of Blazin sailed by Jackie Hoad, Immigrant and Bruggadung sailed by Howard Palmer and Ralph Johnson. John played an important part when the Yacht Clubs new beach bar, restaurant, and changing rooms were constructed.
The Committee, Members, Management and Staff extend sincerest condolences to the Hoad and Still families as well as their loved ones.
The Barbados Sailing Association held its first Summer Camp in the last two weeks of July. Based at the Barbados Yacht Club, both beginners and those with some sailing experience had a wonderful time as they developed their sailing skills in the waters of Carlisle Bay.

June 1st marked the beginning of the 2023 hurricane season and we wish to remind boat owners that boat your boat trailers should be in good working condition during this time.
Particular attention should be paid to Phase 3 of the Hurricane Contingency Plan which reads as follows:
Hauling out of boats will take place during this phase.
Owners must present themselves prior to or during this period and not during the WARNING PHASE
No staff or equipment will be available for hauling up of boats after this.
It is imperative that you check your vessel after rainfall to ensure it is free of stagnant water
The Ministry of Health has reminded us that the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is still present and since the Barbados Yacht Club, is located “down wind”, we are considered a very high risk area. We have asked the boatmen to be more vigilant in their checks but request your assistance in controlling this problem.
