Welcome
This autumn has a distinctly East Anglian flavour.
TheHighwayman is a brilliant new musical written by Suffolk playwright Kitty Morgan. The script was initially developed right here at Theatre Royal through our Artist Network programme.
Legendary East Anglian touring theatre company Eastern Angles return to Theatre Royal for the first time in three years with their new production The Deep, a powerful Icelandic story of survival against the odds.
Fellow East Anglian new-writing company HighTide Theatre return with more contemporary GhostStoriesby Candlelight after their sell-out success last year.
Visiting from further afield, Blackeyed Theatre (Sherlock Holmes and The ValleyofFear; OhWhataLovelyWar) return with a blood-curdling treat in Dracula. Chipping Norton Theatre bring us a musical murder-mystery in Murder for Two. Continuing the theme, Murder, She Didn’t Write, the improvised murder-mystery, will bring us a different murder every night!
We know that making the choice on which of our fantastic dramas to see this season is difficult. So with our new 3D Saver, book to see two or more of the qualifying shows and save 25% on your tickets.
Autumn 2024 Sponsored by
As always, there is a full programme of productions for children and young people over the Half-Term holiday, including TheMagicofScience and the adaptation of Tom Fletcher’s hit children’s book There’s a Monster in Your Show.
The season ends in spectacular style, with Theatre Royal’s pantomime; nominated for Best UK Panto (under 500 seats) for the second year in a row. This year, we will be heading to the deserts of Arabia to tell the story of Aladdin, with all the mischief, anarchy and joy you would expect from a Theatre Royal panto.
All, our in-house productions - including Aladdin, the Christmas Cabin, RoyallyFunnyComedyNight and the Lunchtime Concerts - are included in the 2-for-1 ticket offer sponsored by our friends at TREATT. You can find out more on page 32.
We extend our thanks to our generous season sponsor Churchgates, our new restaurant partner The Angel Hotel (see page 26), and our main sponsor Greene King - whose support is so crucial to our theatre.

MURDER, SHE DIDN’T WRITE
Fri 13 - Sat 14 Sep, 7.30pm | £12 - £22 | 14+
The improvised murder-mystery is back, where you, the audience, become the author and are invited to help create your very own Agatha Christie-inspired masterpiece - and to watch it unfold on stage before your very eyes.
So, don your deerstalkers, pick up a magnifying glass and get your ‘fingers of suspicion’ at the ready. You decide where, you decide when, you decide who, and one lucky audience member will decide who dunnit! That’s right, every evening this extraordinarily talented company will create an original and extremely comical improvised murder-mystery based entirely on audience suggestions.
Mr Crimson poisoned in the parlour? Ms Gold exploded by a cannon in Sainsbury’s? You decide! But will you work out the killer in time?

DRACULA
Wed 25 - Sat 28 Sep | £12 - £26 | 12+

The time is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change, scientific mastery and media innovation. But poised between traditional beliefs, the threat of the unknown and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging. As a new shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, led by Professor Van Helsing, are plunged into an epic struggle for survival.
Stretching from London, through provincial England, to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stoker’s timeless gothic-thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation, and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within.
Adapted by Nick Lane, this brilliant, theatrical treatment of Bram Stoker’s adventure blends Victorian gothic with the contemporary, showcasing Blackeyed Theatre’s trademark ensemble performance style, and featuring a haunting soundscape, powerful performances and innovative design for an exhilarating theatrical experience.

A new British musical based on the poem by Alfred Noyes Music, book and lyrics by Kitty Morgan Arrangements by Adam Morris
Directed by Adam Nichols

THE HIGHWAYMAN
Wed 2 - Sat 5 Oct | £12 - £23 | 12+
Welcome, lovelies, to our tub-thumping, pub sing-along, set in the year 1666 but reflecting exactly who we are right here, right now in 2024.
Inspired by Alfred Noyes’ classic poem, TheHighwayman tells the story of a doomed love affair between Bess and self-confessed sociopath Duval. Along the way, we meet a cast of richly drawn restoration rogues and romantics – from a mysterious conqueror to a mystic grandmother; a sadistic smuggler to a rip-roaring East End landlady. Not to mention special guest appearances by Nell Gwynn and King Charles II himself…
Sexy, darkly funny and deeply moving, TheHighwayman is about longing for better while trying to run from the worst of our past. It explores love, loss, and the light in the dark, and it asks why we always seem to find the perfect knife on which to cut ourselves.
TheHighwayman submerges the audience in a unique, genre-busting sound world in which a live band joyously reimagines pub sing-alongs and folk ballads in super contemporary arrangements, from electro swing to Adele, with a sprinkling of Billie Eilish and Kae Tempest.
