WELCOME TO THE

AUTUMN SEASON Welcome to our new season brochure and an exciting programme, whatever your interests, wherever you live!

We open with a brand new production - the iconic Our Day Out - the Musical by Willy Russell. Forty years on from its first production for BBC’s Play for Today and updated in 2009, it still resonates with themes about the importance of education and creating opportunities for young people. It paved the way for Blood Brothers and Educating Rita. There’s a wonderful selection of national touring companies with Private Lives by Noel Coward, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the epic Greek tragedy Antigone, and Northern Broadsides with For Love or Money, directed by Barry Rutter. For the murder mystery lovers we’ve A Judgement in Stone, based on Ruth Rendell’s novel. Welcome also to Common Ground Theatre with

a new adaptation of Dickens, The Old Curiosity Shop and Suffolk Summer Theatre returns with The Prisoner of Zenda. New writing and work is an important part of the lifeblood of British Theatre. Fringe First winner Katie Bonna performs All the Things I Lied About, Big Foot from Black Theatre Live, and actor/comedian Rob Rouse is here with Are You Sitting Comfortably. World Poetry Slam champion Harry Baker and jazz musician Chris Read debut here. While Showstopper!, Austentatious and An Evening with Eric and Ern return following their previous sell out visits. Families remain a priority and we have treats including Stick Man, Bookstory, The Snowlies and Crafty’s Creepy Castles. Christmas sees the return of our amazing and talented panto team for what promises to be our best show yet – Dick Whittington. Theatre Royal has a tiny fraction of the funding of other theatres in our region but we continue to punch well above our weight. We believe great theatre and entertainment should be for all and, with the support of many businesses, individuals and our local authorities, we will continue to do just that! Enjoy…

COMEDY / LONDON CLASSIC THEATRE

London Classic Theatre presents a major new touring production of Noël Coward’s sparkling comedy. In Private Lives, strong passions and stronger personalities set the stage for a classic battle of the sexes. 1930. Deauville, France. Two newly-married couples occupy adjoining honeymoon suites in the same hotel. As a distant orchestra plays, Sibyl gazes adoringly at charismatic husband Elyot, while Victor admires his new wife, the vivacious and sophisticated Amanda. Champagne flows and the sea shimmers in the moonlight as the newlyweds prepare for the evening ahead. But when Amanda overhears a familiar voice singing a forgotten song, an old spark reignites, with spectacular consequences.

10

Full of razor-sharp wit and quick-fire dialogue, Private Lives is Noël Coward’s most popular and enduring stage comedy. Extraordinarily written in only three days, Private Lives opened at London’s Phoenix Theatre in August 1930 to packed houses. Since then, this charming comedy of manners has retained its remarkable appeal, captivating audiences all over the world.

DRAMA / ARDEN ENTERTAINMENT LTD In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘FACE’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes-obsessed and street-wise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. This quintessentially British ‘Mod’ Musical celebrates the unique sound of the iconic ‘60s Mod band, The Small Faces. Featuring the music of The Small Faces, including an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Lazy Sunday, Tin Soldier, Sha La La La Lee, Itchycoo Park and of course All Or Nothing.

ALL THE THINGS I LIED ABOUT

by Katie Bonna Fringe First winner Katie Bonna is giving a TED talk on the science of lying. Well, that’s not quite true. TED haven’t actually asked her to do one – yet.

Gripping, stylish and thought-provoking, this is unmissable theatre. Go on...treat your dark side!

In a comic exploration of her past mistakes and inevitable future disasters, Katie unpicks how everyday lies can lead to a world of Trump and Brexit. A fearlessly honest show for the post-truth era. Dirty Great Love Story, co-written and performed with Richard Marsh, won a Fringe First in 2012 and Katie was also nominated for Best Actress by The Stage.

DRAMA / THE CLASSIC THRILLER THEATRE COMPANY Eunice struggles to fit in. When she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper the very reason for her awkwardness, long hidden and deeply buried, leads inexorably to a terrible tale of murder in cold blood - on Valentine’s Day. Ruth Rendell’s brilliant plot unravels a lifetime of deceit, despair and coverups which, when revealed, brings a shocking revelation almost as grizzly as murder itself. Building on the phenomenal decade-long success of The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, which sold over two million tickets and continually played to packed houses around the UK, Bill Kenwright presents a new production adapted from one of the most celebrated works of the writer often hailed as the successor to Agatha Christie. Credited with revitalising the mystery genre, Ruth Rendell was first published in 1964 and was awarded a CBE in 1996. Her prolific output included film and TV as well as 80 novels and one of the genre’s most famous characters Chief Inspector Wexford. Widely considered to be one of Rendell’s greatest works, A Judgement in Stone is loved for its brilliant rendering of character, plot and motive, and is undoubtedly the Queen of Psychological Crime at her thrilling best.

Throw in a bailiff, a drunkard, a vamp, a second-hand clothes dealer and two upwardly mobile servants, and the complications multiply. Love, life and masculinity meet head-on as Joseph tells his poignant coming-of-age story with a twist of the fantastical. When the euphoric highs of teenage life in south London collide with terminal illness and family pressure, what is the right thing to do? Worrying about school, girls and status on the streets, Big Foot puts you in a teenager’s footsteps as Joseph stumbles and strives to find a path to the present day. Will Dick become the master of all rat catchers? Can he save the city? Can the good ship Leaking Lizzie ever get them home to safety? Join the cast of 2017’s traditional family pantomime for the ride of a lifetime as young Dick Whittington sets off to London to make his fame and fortune! One of the best loved stories of all time, this exciting adventure takes our hero all the way from his home in sleepy Suffolk, to rat infested London town and on to Paradise Island on the good ship Leaking Lizzie.
