After decades of Puritan austerity, the playhouses open their doors again in 1661 and crowds flock to see the sensation of the age: an actress of exquisite beauty and charm as well as taste and talent. In a period when women are prohibited from acting, ‘her’ name is Edward Kynaston. Nothing can eclipse Ned’s brilliant domination of the stage until a young orange-seller with royal connections also sets her cap on a stage career. For the sake of his ‘pretty, witty’ Nell Gwynne, the king changes the law to allow women to act, and Kynaston’s world is turned upside-down.

THE BLUES BAND If music matures like fine wine, 1979 was a vintage year. That’s when Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness (from the hugely successful Manfred Mann) returned to their first love - the blues. Into the ranks came slide guitarist and vocalist Dave Kelly, legendary drummer Hughie Flint, (replaced in 1982 by the renowned Rob Townsend), with bass provided by Gary Fletcher. They imagined their ‘back to the roots’ project, The Blues Band, would simply earn some beer money. How wrong they were! Thirty years later, they’re still going strong... In 1964, a wave of new energetic rock’n’roll swept over the youth of the world. On the crest of this wave was The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and, of course, The Animals. From the banks of the River Tyne came the North East's offering; a brand of rhythm’n’blues that the whole world seemed to grasp greedily. The hits - like House of The Rising Sun, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood and Boom Boom just kept on coming.

SEAN HUGHES LIFE BECOMES NOISES

From the moment the lights come up, revealing a hospital bed and Sean dressed in a slightly inappropriate costume, it is apparent that this is going to be no ordinary comedy show... It has been over a year since his father died, and Sean is dealing with his death in a way that only Sean can. This hilarious yet poignant tale is a beautiful insight into the lighter side of dying and getting older, going to places that comedy rarely goes, highlighting how ridiculous life is and how quickly it can be taken away.

VOLUNTEERING/ GWIRFODDOLI Wyeside’s volunteers play a vital role in the venue’s success, helping Wyeside in many ways – whether stewarding for live events and films, working in the bar and helping to publicise over a thousand separate presentations every year. Benefits of volunteering includes the opportunity to see events and films for free. Please email your name, address and telephone number to house@wyeside.co.uk to receive an application form or make yourself known to venue staff on your next visit. The recent redevelopment of the Market Theatre has been made possible by funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, Garfield Weston Foundation, the Aggregate Levy Fund For Wales and the Foyle Foundation. Wyeside is an Investor In People.

Wyeside is located in a prominent position on the South bank of the Wye in the town of Builth Wells: next to the river bridge and opposite the brightly coloured Llewellyn mural. Wyeside has no visitor parking, but the Groe public car park is less than 200m walk away from the centre. Parking is free after 6pm. FROM BRECON AND THE SOUTH EAST Arrive at Builth Wells on the A470. You will pass Wyeside on your right opposite the Llewellyn mural. Turn left and follow the one-way system along the High Street and West Street. Where lanes diverge, turn right along Church Street. Turn right again. The Groe car park will be on your left, and Wyeside straight ahead. FROM SWANSEA AND THE SOUTH WEST Enter Builth Wells on the A483. At the roundabout, follow the A483 and the one-way system to the left, along Park Road, Church Street and The Strand. The Groe car park will be on your left. To reach Wyeside, turn left out of the car park along the Strand, and you will see Wyeside at the end of the road. FROM NEWTOWN AND THE NORTH Arrive at Builth Wells on the A483. Cross the bridge – you will pass Wyeside on your left. Follow the oneway system around to the right, along High Street and West Street. Where lanes diverge, turn right along Church Street. Turn right again. The Groe car park will be on your left, and Wyeside straight ahead.
