THEATR BRYCHEINIOG Annual Report DIVERSIONS DANCE COMPANY OF WALES

FOREW It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Annual Report 2008/09 of Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon. In addition to providing a unique contribution to cultural life in the area, the theatre plays an important role in the life and work of the town and the region. Eclectic programming, exciting collaborations and artistic expression work hand-in-hand with creative fundraising, sound business planning and professional management. The economic value of Theatr Brycheiniog to Brecon and mid-Wales is without doubt. This year, Theatr Brycheiniog set an example to other arts organisations in Wales by taking the first steps to reduce

its carbon footprint. The first stage of its renewable energy strategy was completed in August when an array of photovoltaic cells was fitted to the roof thanks to 100% grant aid of £60,000 from Brecon Beacons National Park, Scottish Power Green Energy and the DTI’s Low Carbon Buildings Fund. Since installation, the theatre has generated a significant portion of its own electricity and used 5000kg less CO2. Future developments include the installation of a wood chip boiler system. I am confident that Theatr Brycheiniog will sustain its position as one of Wales’ leading arts centres with its roots firmly embedded in the community it serves. I look forward to its continued development and many triumphs along the way.

RHAGAIR Mae’n bleser mawr gennyf gyflwyno Adroddiad Blynyddol 2008/09 Theatr Brycheiniog yn Aberhonddu. Yn ogystal â chynnig cyfraniad unigryw at fywyd diwylliannol yr ardal, mae gan y theatr rôl bwysig ym mywyd a gwaith y dref a’r fro. Mae rhaglennu eclectig, cydweithio cyffrous a mynegiadau artistig yn gweithio law yn llaw â chodi arian mewn dulliau creadigol, cynllunio busnes cadarn a rheoli proffesiynol. Ni ellir amau gwerth economaidd Theatr Brycheiniog i Aberhonddu a chanolbarth Cymru. Eleni, mae Theatr Brycheiniog wedi dangos esiampl i fudiadau eraill y celfyddydau yng Nghymru trwy gymryd y camau cyntaf i leihau ei ôl-troed carbon. Daeth cam cyntaf ei strategaeth ynni adnewyddadwy i ben ym mis Awst wrth i gelloedd ffotofoltaidd gael eu gosod ar y to – diolch i gymorth grant

100% gan Barc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog, Ynni Gwyrdd Scottish Power a Chronfa Adeiladau Carbon Isel y DTI. Ers gosod y celloedd hyn mae’r theatr wedi cynhyrchu cyfran sylweddol o’i drydan ei hun gan ddefnyddio 5000 kg yn llai o CO2. Yn y dyfodol rydym yn bwriadu gosod system foeler sy’n llosgi sglodion pren. Rwy’n hyderus y bydd Theatr Brycheiniog yn cadw ei henw da fel un o brif ganolfannau’r celfyddydau yng Nghymru gyda’i gwreiddiau’n gadarn yn y gymuned o’i chwmpas. Rwy’n edrych ymlaen at ei datblygiad parhaus, gyda sawl llwyddiant ar hyd y ffordd.

INTRODUCTION

The annual report is Theatr Brycheiniog’s attempt to give an impression of the range of performances, events, exhibitions and community arts work which it creates and presents each year. Designated as a ‘Regional Performing Arts Centre’ and ‘Creative Producer’, Theatr Brycheiniog is an active partner in presenting and touring performing arts across Wales. There have been notable successes in 2008/09, not least the collaborative venture with Arts Council Wales, Creu Cymru, Rhondda Cynon Taf Theatres and Blaenau Gwent Arts Service to host the National Theatre Of Scotland’s mesmerising production of Black Watch at Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre. Other significant projects include the only performance in Wales in 2008 by Cardiffbased No Fit State Circus and the ongoing partnerships with Earthfall, Theatr Na n’Og and Music Theatre Wales. I am also delighted that Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra became Theatr Brycheiniog’s first ‘orchestra in residence’ in 2008. We look forward to many more exciting developments in the coming months.

Yr adroddiad blynyddol hwn yw ymgais Theatr Brycheiniog i roi cipolwg ar yr amrywiaeth o berfformiadau, digwyddiadau, arddangosfeydd gwaith celfyddydau’r gymuned sy’n cael eu creu a’u cyflwyno bob blwyddyn.

CYFLWYNIAD Fel ‘Canolfan Celfyddydau Perfformio Rhanbarthol’ a ‘Chynhyrchydd Creadigol’ mae Theatr Brycheiniog yn bartner brwd wrth gyflwyno a llwyfannu celfyddydau perfformio teithiol ar draws Cymru. Cafwyd llwyddiannau amlwg iawn yn 2008/09, ac yn arbennig y fenter gydweithio gyda Chyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, Creu Cymru, Theatrau Rhondda Cynon Taf a Gwasanaeth Celfyddydau Blaenau Gwent i lwyfannu cynhyrchiad hudolus Theatr Genedlaethol yr Alban o’r ‘Black Watch’ yng Nghanolfan Hamdden Glyn Ebwy.

Mae’n bleser hefyd nodi mai Cerddorfa Siambr Canolbarth Cymru oedd ‘cerddorfa breswyl’ gyntaf Theatr Brycheiniog yn 2008.

NO FIT STATE CIRCUS

MISSION STATEMENT ...to inspire, entertain and educate; engaging audiences and participants, locally and regionally, in quality experiences that establish Theatr Brycheiniog as a thriving centre for the arts in Wales.

THE VENUE Situated at the end of the picturesque Brecon to Monmouth Canal in the pretty market town of Brecon on the edge of Brecon Beacons National Park, Theatr Brycheiniog offers an eclectic programme of performing arts and entertainment throughout the year and is also a Brecon Jazz venue. Theatr Brycheiniog is principally a receiving theatre, buying-in multi-genre theatrical product from touring parties, and their agents, from the UK and, occasionally, further afield. Brecon is a small town in a sparsely populated area there are approximately 30,000 people living within a 30 minute drive-time of the theatre – and so operates on the principle of offering something for everyone, everything for someone.

Theatr Brycheiniog offers standard concessionary tickets for most performances as well as special rates for group bookers. Other facilities on the theatre site include a gallery featuring a year-round programme of visual arts by artists from the region and beyond and a nationally acclaimed bistro Tipple’n’Tiffin.

CASE STUDY

ASTUDIAETH ACHOS

In September, the Brecon Breakers were invited to the Wales Millennium Centre for two days to assist in launching the Cultural Olympiad in Wales. They performed several times on the Tesco Stage and were televised for the BBC. They were also filmed by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games 2012, which is likely to use footage of their dance routine in its promotional material. Three venues in Wales have been chosen to be hubs for the development of urban dance and arts, of which Theatr Brycheiniog is one. Brecon Breakers will be actively involved in promoting urban dance in the mid Wales area, and the theatre will be used for workshops.

‘BRECON BREAKERS’ A CRIW CYMRU Ym mis Medi, gwahoddwyd y ‘Brecon Breakers’ i Ganolfan Mileniwm Cymru am ddau ddiwrnod i helpu i lansio’r Olympiad Diwylliannol yng Nghymru. Fe wnaethant berfformio sawl gwaith ar lwyfan Tesco a’u darlledu ar y BBC. Hefyd cawsant eu ffilmio gan Bwyllgor Trefnu Llundain ar gyfer y Gemau Olympaidd yn 2012 sy’n debygol o ddefnyddio rhan o’r ddawns yn eu deunydd hyrwyddo. Dewiswyd tri lle yng Nghymru i fod yn ganolfannau datblygu dawns a’r celfyddydau trefol, ac mae Theatr Brycheiniog yn un ohonynt. Bydd ‘Brecon Breakers’ yn gweithio’n frwd i hyrwyddo dawns drefol yn ardal Canolbarth Cymru, gan ddefnyddio’r theatr ar gyfer gweithdai.
