Thank you for joining us for the first show of the new—my first!—season... a season that I am confident will both reflect a continuation of a storied theatrical legacy as well as an introduction of some of my own artistic aspirations.
I’m so proud that we’re opening by championing the talents of Adam Gwon and Michael Mitnick with this devilishly delectable Regional Premiere production and this rock-star creative team led by Matt Cowart and Lonny Price. Paying witness to the late-stage evolution of the piece—which has transformed in significant ways since its 2019 New York premiere and its 2022 NEXT Festival residency—has been astonishing and inspiring. I believe so deeply in our commitment to shaping the future of the American musical theater, and I believe that this piece will reverberate powerfully in reflection of that commitment.
I’m also thrilled that the rest of our 24/25 season includes the company’s inaugural staging of a Rodgers and Hammerstein work, a fresh and innovative solo showcase, and two contemporary, piercing “Best Musical” Tony Award winners, including Latté Da’s 99th staging.
Finally, the tremendous collective contributions of everyone at Latté Da is the only reason I get to celebrate with you the accomplishment that is this season launch and this Regional Premiere. Gearing up for this new season with this team and for this community has brought out a next-level sense of honor and service in me. I hope you’re as proud as I am of the art and growth you’re supporting.

My introduction to Scotland, PA was reading a glowing review in the New York Times. The Times’ review of its premiere production in October 2019 at the Roundabout Theatre Company called it both “laugh out loud funny” and “quietly insightful” and crowned it a “Critics Pick.”
Six months later, a colleague reached out. The Scotland, PA writers were interested in doing further work on it and might we program it in our upcoming NEXT Festival? It was an easy “yes!” I was already an admirer of composer/lyricist, Adam Gwon, and director, Lonny Price, but I was also….impressed. A team who’d received a glowing reception for a New York production was not resting on their laurels but wanted to continue to refine and perfect their creation? Well, that’s exactly the kind of artists we love to support at Latté Da!
The work of creating a new musical doesn’t always stop on opening night of its world premiere. In fact, sometimes it takes being able to see the fully mounted production and assess the responses of the audience for the artists to know what’s working and what isn’t. We believe in the power of further development and second productions for new musicals and couldn’t be more proud to provide this opportunity to the extraordinary artists of Scotland, PA

Theater Latté Da is the leading nonprofit professional theater in the Twin Cities that exclusively produces musical theater. Since our inception, TLD has presented 94 Mainstage productions, including 17 world premieres and 14 area premieres. Michael Mitnick (Book writer) and Adam Gwon (Music and Lyrics) sat down with Director of New Work, Elissa Adams, to share the origin story behind their partnership.
How did the two of you come together to work on Scotland, PA?
Adam: We were introduced to each other by Roundabout Theatre Company. I was looking for a playwright to write a musical with (they had commissioned me to write a musical). They set me up on a blind date with Mr. Mitnick. We met at a coffee shop in the East Village and at that meeting, we hit it off and Michael pitched a couple of ideas. He was like “Oh, go watch this movie. Go watch that movie. “ And one of those movies was Scotland, PA, which Michael had loved since he saw it in high school. And we both said, “Yeah, let‘s do it.”
What about the film, Scotland, PA struck you as juicy source material for a musical?
Michael: I first came across it randomly when I was in high school. I was delighted by the ingenuity of twisting McDonald’s and the Scottish Play together, the fictional invention of the drive-through window. And it struck me as having elements of Sweeney Todd, of Little Shop of Horrors. I thought this is very clearly fodder for a great musical. Now, no one was going to give the rights to the movie to a high schooler, so I had to wait a bit.
Adam: Michael talked about loving plot. Plot is so hard to pull off, but, for an audience, it’s one of the most satisfying things you can do.
Michael: Adam is rare among songwriters. He’s part of both the old tradition and the new tradition. He still cares about perfect rhymes and writes what I call genuine melodies and songs that start in one place and end in another and while those seem like basics, not many people seem to practice it anymore. It was exciting to work with someone who writes so quickly and yet at such a high level.
What’s your working process? How do you work together as a team?
Adam: Michael is a pretty accomplished song writer in his own right, so I think he understands instinctually how story can happen in song, and that’s part of the way he constructs the book for a musical. So, we always had a pretty strong, shared sense of what the songs in the scenes were doing. Once we had that, I’d go off and write a song and then we’d check back in to see how the song and the scene were integrating.
And then, we were very fortunate that [directors] Lonny Price and Matt Cowart came aboard so early in the process. They would look at a scene and a song and make suggestions about scene transitions and where the set could change. The story really becomes three dimensional at that stage because you’re starting to think about how things move onstage and how every second of stage time can be used to support the storytelling.

Do different things resonate for you than when you first start writing this piece?
Adam: It’s always been a show that the younger generation connects to. That’s partly because it’s rock music and it’s a little edgy. But, you know, when we were here during the NEXT Festival, and we had that talkback, we asked the audience who they thought the real villain was in the story and they gave this amazing answer... capitalism. We loved that!
This is a story where two young people are disenfranchised and feel like the American Dream that had been promised to them–they don’t have access to it. And that’s what this election is about. Young people were promised a better life than their parents and it’s not possible now for so many people. And I think that element of it resonates for me now in a way that it didn’t when I first watched Scotland, PA, the film, back in 2015 when we first started this. The story is no longer about kings and thanes (like the Shakespeare play) but about regular people just trying to live their lives.

Scotland, PA follows the plot of Shakespeare’s Macbeth quite closely. Below is a quick synopsis of Macbeth–give it a glance if you’d like to refresh your memory of its plot points and see how many of them appear in the show!
Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches who predict that he will become Thane of Cawdor and "king hereafter." His wife, Lady Macbeth, urges him to seize the opportunity and take the throne. One night, Macbeth murders King Duncan in his sleep, then frames the guards for the crime.
Macbeth's best friend, Banquo, was present for the witches' prophecy and realizes that Macbeth is responsible for King Duncan's murder. To protect himself, Macbeth has Banquo killed. Fleance, Banquo's son, escapes and is prophesied to become king.
Duncan's sons Malcolm and Donalbain flee Scotland, where they begin plotting against Macbeth. One of their allies, Macduff, poses a serious threat to Macbeth, so the new king has Macduff crowned king. Malcolm and Macduff join forces and prepare for war. Overcome with remorse over the murder of King Duncan, Lady Macbeth commits suicide. Her death barely affects Macbeth, who has received three new prophecies: to beware Macduff, that "none of woman born" shall harm him, and that he won't bedefeated until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Hill. Naturally, Macbeth assumes that he's invincible.
Macduff's forces camouflage themselves with foliage from Birnam Wood as they march on Dunsinane. Macduff, the product of a gruesome c-section, was not "of woman born" and thus has the power to defeat Macbeth, who realizes too late that the witches' prophecies foretold his death and not his success.

Theater Latté Da was envisioned by Co-Founder Peter Rothstein as a home for the future of the American musical. Latté Da has lived this vision since our beginning, with 15 of our 26 mainstage seasons including world premieres.
Theater Latté Da is embarking on an ambitious milestone: supporting the development of 25 new musicals or plays with music by 2025. Through NEXT 25x25, we will invest in the future of the great American Musical and its playwrights, composers, and lyricists through world premieres, the annual NEXT Festival, our NEXT Up development program, and NEXT Generation commissions.

We have fully remodeled our lobby restrooms to make them All Gender restrooms. Each contains five fully private stalls with ADA accessible facilities.
Accessible Seating: Accessible seating is available at the Ritz Theater in Row E, Sidebar P, and Sidebar Q. All other seating requires stairs for access.
Courtesy Wheelchairs: Courtesy wheelchairs are available for use for patrons who may have mobility challenges. Please see our House Manager or Box Office Manager for use.
Bariatric Chairs: Bariatric chairs are available at the Ritz Theater in Sidebars P and Q.
ASL Interpreted Performances: We offer ASL-interpreted performances for every production during our season. These performances are usually offered the second Thursday in each production.
Audio Described Performances: Professional audio describers provide narration of on-stage action, costumes, and scenery during the performance. Listening devices are available for patrons to use during the AD scheduled performances.
Open Caption Performances: We offer open captioning for select weekend performances. Captions of the text are displayed on a screen near the stage, more easily read from our sidebar seats. Check the performance calendar for the open captioning dates or call the Box Office at 612.339.3003 for details.
Assistive Listening Devices: We offer assistive listening devices for all performances. Please stop at the Box Office to check one out for use during the performance.
Braille Programs: Please see an usher or our Guest Services Manager to request a braille program for any performance.
Large Print Programs: Large print programs are available upon request. Please see the Box Office or request a copy from an usher.
COVID-19 Policy: As of the start of this season at the Ritz Theater, we are no longer requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result. Masks are welcome but optional, EXCEPT for select Sunday matinee performances when they are required. This policy is subject to change.
Photos & Video: Photos of the set are allowed before or after the show and during intermission, but not when artists are onstage. Video or audio recording of any kind is strictly prohibited.
Phones: The ringing of cellular phones or texting is highly disruptive during a performance. These devices should be turned off during the performance.
Theater Latté Da’s Scenic Studio was established with a vision of a shared scene shop, in which not only Latté Da’s set construction could occur, but other Twin Cities theater companies and individuals could utilize the space for productions and projects big and small.
Rent the shop or rent our build or paint areas. Daily and weekly rental rates are available to support projects ranging from woodworking, welding (Mig), painting, and carpentry. The Scenic Studio rental includes the space to work and use of tools.
TLD Scenic Studio has worked on projects for Mixed Blood Theater, Lucent Blue Events and has rented out the Scenic Studio to Jungle Theater and S.O.A.R.
