NOTES ON FUN HOME
In my very first days with Theater Latté Da last year, I kept hearing one title consistently mentioned as the “perfect Latté Da show” and it became palpable that FUN HOME was something our community was eager for. Even as a brand-new member of the community, I wholeheartedly agreed. Elissa Adams and I took that energy to heart and, after some careful persistence, we found a way to overcome a hold on the performance rights and secured permission to finally bring this extraordinary musical to our stage. Now, the moment has arrived, and we are beyond thrilled to share it with you.
FUN HOME is based on the graphic memoir of the same title by American cartoonist Alison Bechdel. Her name may ring some bells: her trailblazing comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For” is considered one of the first representations of lesbians in popular culture, as well as the origin of what has become known as “the Bechdel test,” a (then, tongue-in-cheek) measure of the representation of women in fiction that has taken on a life of its own. Bechdel has become a groundbreaking figure in the world of literature and culture, even earning a MacArthur “Genius” Award for her contributions. And with her Minnesota/Twin Cities ties, her work and life resonates with us in unique ways. In the theater world, however, it is through the Tony Award-winning, Pulitzer Prize finalist musical adaptation of her masterwork that Alison Bechdel’s name has become iconic—as a character embodying self-discovery, bravery, and the pursuit of truth.
When it came time to bring this show to life, inviting guest director Addie Gorlin-Han was one of the easiest (and best!) decisions I made in my first months here. Addie’s work speaks for itself, but what has particularly stood out for me have been her theatrical insights and instincts, as well as her deep commitment to theater as a powerful vehicle for community-building. As both a theatermaker and a human, she is an impressive force, and I am honored to have her lead this production.
FUN HOME is a magnificent telling of one person’s specific journey, but in our production, under Addie’s direction, I am certain it will resonate with all who experience it. Thank you to those (many) of you for urging me to include this all-time favorite in my very first season of programming.
Justin Lucero Artistic Director
At the beginning of the play, Alison opens a box from her father’s past; she pulls out random relics (antiques, linens, a dead mouse, etc.) which serve as catalysts connecting her to childhood memories. She’s made the decision to interrogate her fathers’ death head-on-- “she wants to know what’s true, dig deep into who, and what and why and when, until now gives way to then.” Because of this, I loved the idea of her returning to a metaphorical warehouse, a big storage room of memories, where her father’s antiques are stored and which she hasn’t encountered in the last 20 years.
What also strikes me about the play and the graphic memoir is that Alison could have worked through all of these memories with contempt, anger at her father, resentment and bitterness towards her family-- and to be clear, she doesn’t shy away from complicated, messy truths of it all. But she does so with an overwhelming sense of love.
This is a musical that so effectively asks us to care— to pause and turn inwards for a moment—to listen not only to these meaningful words and gorgeous music—but it also asks us to dial in and hear our own gentle heartbeats and tune to the radio waves of others.
Addie Gorlin-Han Director

Fun Home, the musical based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel of the same name, began its journey to the stage in 2009. The show premiered at New York’s Public Theater to rave reviews in 2013, was a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and opened on Broadway at
Circle in the Square Theatre in April, 2015. It was nominated for five Tonys and won the award for Best Musical.
Below, composer Jeanine Tesori, playwright Lisa Kron and director Sam Gold discuss the developmental process of crafting a musical from a graphic novel (excerpted from an article by Suzy Evans published in American Theatre magazine).
Someone suggested the book to Lisa Kron as source material for a musical, and having little experience in the form aside from writing some parody lyrics, she immediately shared the idea with Tesori. Kron had seen Tesori’s Caroline, or Change three times and knew the composer’s musical sophistication was right for the piece. However, Tesori couldn’t immediately picture it as a musical, and Kron’s heart sank. But then Tesori said, “And that’s why I want to do it.”
“That’s something that I’m very interested in—the difference between telling a story and dramatic action,” Kron says. “There was this adult character who was doing things that are very difficult to dramatize—making a book, telling the story of her father, remembering something—how do you dramatize that?”
“We had to find our own parallel storytelling to Alison’s,” Fun Home’s original director, Sam Gold says. “We had to have our own originating impulse, and I felt the music needed to be that impulse, not the imagery of the book.”
Composer Jeanine Tesori drew inspiration from the cartoons to write her score. “There’s a beauty in the line, and it’s not so dense,” Tesori notes, comparing Bechdel’s drawings to Maurice Sendak’s early work. “There’s a way that the reader completes the line, and that to me is a theatrical experience.”
Sam Gold, Jeanine Tesori, and Lisa Kron at the opening of Fun Home at the Public Theater
While Gold relied on music instead of cartoons, he did take inspiration from the graphic novel form. Kron and Tesori came up with the conceit of the three Alisons—three actresses play the main character as a youth, during her college years and in middle age—but the story does not move sequentially.
“In a graphic novel you have several ways of conveying information—the visual information, the frame, and then the thought bubbles inside that frame and the caption below it. The story gets told through juxtaposition,” Gold explains. “This is a musical that happens in three timelines simultaneously, and all three of them have to live at the same time, so we could be bold about conveying dramatic information through the juxtaposition. This event’s happening: What does it mean that this person from a whole other time and place is in relation to it?”
“It was the worst!” Tesori exclaims. “Th is show cannot be modular. Something has to happen in order for this to happen, and then this and then this. I felt so underprepared for this kind of storytelling, because I couldn’t find my own way of answering the why? There are some parts where I’m like, I don’t know how we found that. We just kept at it.”
Gold, Kron and Tesori were grateful to have many opportunities to work with actors and designers before they reached production. “The only way that this could have been made was on its feet,” Kron explains. “You just never knew with this show until you put it on its feet what was going to have life in it and what was going to be dead, because it is told through those physical juxtapositions. Kron and Tesori drew some from their own youthful experiences and particularly enjoyed obsessing over the minutiae of growing up in the 1970s. Tesori derived a lot of inspiration from the female singer/songwriters who emerged during that time, including Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Melissa Manchester. “I hope to continue the tradition, in a theatrical way, of what those women were doing,” she says.
The fact that there are very few father/daughter narratives portrayed onstage is something Gold finds shocking. Over the course of the piece’s development, he became a father to a daughter, which “completely shifted my emotional connection to the piece.”
“There’s always been this question about Alison’s work—why is it so universally powerful to people?” Gold continues. “She has such an idiosyncratic life story, but she’s tapping into something I hadn’t even thought about—that story of father/daughter love that hasn’t really been brought up in dramatic literature.”

The challenge for the musical’s creative team was how to transform the graphic drawings in Bechdel’s book into musical moments. Here are three examples of pages from the novel, Fun Home, and the songs that evolved from those moments.
“Ring of Keys”
Do you feel my heart saying “hi”? In this whole luncheonette Why am I the only one who sees you’re beautiful? No, I mean...Handsome!
“It All Comes Back (Opening)”
I wanna play airplane
I wanna play airplane
I wanna play airplane!
I wanna put my arms out and fly!
Like the Red Baron in the Sopwith Camel! No, wait—
Like Superman! Up in the sky!
‘Till I can see all of Pennsylvania...
“Changing My Major”
I don’t know who I am I’ve become someone new
Nothing I just did is anything I would do Overnight, everything changed. I am not prepared
I’m dizzy. I’m nauseous. I’m shaky
I’m scared
Am I falling in to nothingness Or flying into something so sublime?
Dear Friend,
Small Alison Bechdel asks, “Do you feel my heart saying hi?” for good reason. This hello crucially originates in her heart, not her head. It is up to her to trust that her heartsong will be heard loud and clear by its intended recipient; to trust that this unspoken message will cut through the silence and settle safely in the strong hands of the older butch who catapults Alison into self-discovery. I remember sending similar heartsongs to the first visibly queer strangers I encountered as a tiny tomboy in the early 1990s. Like Small Alison, I didn’t have the words to articulate who I was. I lacked the language to express why I desperately needed to connect with these adults whose hearts, I suspected, beat in sync with mine.
Thankfully, the language of love is a wordless thing. It is fluid, flexible and accessible to all, including the youngest among us. The real challenge lies in continuing to take this sacred language seriously as we age.
This task is often a more rigorous one for queer and trans adults, those of us whose hearts, minds, and bodies have been under scrutiny since we were young.
We must confront the harsh world that insists we abandon ourselves and instead, lean into our hearts even harder. If you feel you can no longer hear your own heartsong, let me remind you:
You did not make it this far in order to hide.
If you are a young person in the audience, welcome. I truly believe this show is for you.
If you are an adult in the audience, I encourage you to imagine your younger self sitting beside you today (I hope you brought enough tissues to share with them). As you watch, find a moment to take their small hand in yours. Isn’t it remarkable, how your laughter sounds the same?
If your younger self is reading the program with you, perhaps you can read this part together:
I am here because you stayed. I am here because you stayed. I am here because you stayed.
Thank you for being here.
From my heart to yours,
Jay Owen Eisenberg Assistant Director

Theater Latté Da was envisioned by Co-Founder Peter Rothstein as a home for the future of the American musical. Latté Da has lived this vision since our beginning, with 15 of our 26 mainstage seasons including world premieres.
Theater Latté Da is embarking on an ambitious milestone: supporting the development of 25 new musicals or plays with music by 2025. Through NEXT 25x25, we will invest in the future of the great American Musical and its playwrights, composers, and lyricists through world premieres, the annual NEXT Festival, our NEXT Up development program, and NEXT Generation commissions.
