“Originallytheideawastodoanopendayforthe yardduringthe2023Guineasweekend,butputting adifferenttwistonitbyhavinganartexhibition alongside.Howeveritdevelopedintoitsownentity, gainedmomentumandjusthadarealbuzzaboutit, soIranwithit.Theyardandthegalleryare synergistic,buttheyhavetheirowndistinctspace too.”
Whathadstartedoutasan‘add-on’aspartofa specialopendayweekendforownersandtodrawin thepublic,hasblossomedintoafull-timeenterprise givingheracompletelynew‘stable’ofclients.
OriginallyfromGermany,followingathree-year jockeyapprenticeshiptochampiontrainerBruno Shcuetz,shethenwenttoCaliforniaandspentayear withMontyRobertsatFlagIsUpFarmtofurther
developherequineskills.Aftergraduationasa veterinarianin2009shecametoNewmarket,initially workingforRossdalesbeforesettinguponherown, latertakingouthertrainers’licensein2012.Though atrainerofthoroughbreds,bothherandher husbandalsohaveexperienceofracingArabians, withtheAmericanbredandownedStormTroupour, withwhomtheywonatRoyalWindsorononlyhis secondUKstart.
MarriedtoFrenchman,shealreadyhadquitean internationalbackgroundwhichhasalsobeen reflectedinherchoiceofartistswhicharesimilarly international.Herfirstshowfeaturedtheworkof14 British,French,SouthAfricanandAmericanartists andsculptorsalongsidetheracehorsesinher HamiltonRoadstables.By2025thishasexpandedto includeartistsfromCanada,Italy,theformerCzech Republic,Lithuania,SpainandtheUkraine.
“Atthebeginningitwasawaytopromotemyyard andmytraining,butnowit’sbecomeahealthything forme,asIdon’thaveexpectationsattachedtoit,so bylettingitbefree,itactuallygrewquickerand bigger.
“ThoughIguessitbroughtoutthecompetitiveness inme,asifI’mgoingtodosomething,Iwanttodoit rightandbeprofessional.Throughmyupbringing andthoughracingI’vealwaystravelledtheworld andwhenIhave,I’vevisitedmuseumsandart galleries,soI’vealwayshadaninterestasalayman, butI’venotstudiedanythingformally.Ithinkthere aresimilaritiesinabroaderway,aswitharacehorse youshareitwithfriendsandfamily,it’ssomething thatyoucanenjoyasagroup,andIthinkit’sthe samewithbuyingart,itsayssomethingaboutyou anditevokesemotion,sothemoreyouthinkabout it,themoresimilaritiesthereare.”
Shefeelsnoconflictbetweenherworldsandnor doesshefindjugglinghertimeaproblem, explaining,“Iwouldsaywhenyou’reanentrepreneur andyou’reself-employed,worklifebalanceisnot relevant,everythingismylife.SometimesIwrite invoicesatnightoronaSunday,that’sjusthowitis. Itfellintoourlives,myhusbandStephaneisinvolved too,thoughinitiallyhequestionedwhatIwasdoing! He’ssupportiveandalsoverycreative,thoughhis focusisthehorses,he’salsointerestedindoing
potteryinthefuture,andhewasalwaysverygoodat drawing,especiallywhenoutdaughterEleawas younger.
“Iwantedtotakeitseriouslyandestablishthe gallery,soyouhavetodotheartfairs,whichI researched,thoughofcoursetheycomewithacost. Stephane’sgotareallygoodeyeforhangingsohe’s integraltosettingoutthestandatthefairs.It’sa logisticalthing,Elea’sisnowoldenoughtohelpat thefairsifwehaverunnersandIhavetogoracing, sowehaveasmallteamIcancallonthatcan representtheartreallywellinmyabsence.”
Thankstoinheritingapitchonretirementofoneher artists’representatives,shejumpedinatthedeep end,exhibitingatoneoftheAssociationofArtand AntiqueDealers(LAPADA)fairsatPetworthHousein WestSussex,just20minutesfromGoodwood. PetworthParkAntiquesandFineArtFairisheldina purposebuiltmarqueeinthegroundsofthe NationalTrustpropertyandattractsaround60 exhibitorsayear.
“Petworthisaveryspecialfairasyouhavetobea LAPADAmembertoexhibit.LuckilyIgained ‘grandmother’rightsthroughshowingtheworkof
standsdimensionscomeintoconsideration,butIlike soIliketotryandtellastorywithinthestand-I’m oneofthefewgalleriestherethathascontemporary art.Thesimplethingwouldbetodevoteawallto eachartistbutthat’sneverwhatwedo,youwantto sellasmuchasyoucan,butyoudon’twantto overhangeither.Oftentheseideascomeright beforeIgotosleep!ButIalwaysknowhowIwantit lookbeforewegettheretosetup.Wewantedto avoiditlookingtooclinical.”
Despiteherequinesurroundings,shewelcomesa broadrangeofsubjectmatter,sonotjustracingor sport,aswellasawidevarietyofgenresandartists. RangingfromRaoulMillais,anestablishedfigurative equestrianpainterwhodiedin1999,tomodern landscapesby MilanIvani!,fromtheformerCzech RepublicwhohasbeenintheUKsince1970.
“Wehaveeverythingfrommodernarttooldmasters, allgenres,andofcoursethesculpturestoo.Withthe sculptureswestartedoffwithmoretraditional bronzesandceramicsandnowwehavethese uniquehandcarvedwoodenfalconsfromJulian Stanley.Theworkhadtobegood,butIhavetolove ittoo,there’sneedstobeahumanconnection,if oneofthoseelementsismissing,Ican’tworkwith theperson.Thisdoesn’tfeellikeworktomebecause itallfeelslikeabonus,I’mexcitedbyit.
“Igowithartthatmakesyoufeelgood,portraying thebeautyofnatureandthebeautyofhardwork.”
Importantlywhensheisatthefairs,whichobviously wouldn’thaveanexclusively‘horsey’clientele,she feelsthatsheisrepresentinghorseracingandis proudofittoo.
“Mostofthefairsrunoveraweekend,soPetworthis FridaythroughSunday,withsetupontheThursday. It’ssuchasclassyevent.OneofmyAmericanartists whocametotheopeningsaiditwas‘likebeingina JaneAustennovel’.
Ganserva-LevequewaspreparingfortheGameFair heldattheendofJulyatRagleyHallnearStratford UponAvon,withthenextportofcallbeingFreshArt atAlexandraPalace(30January–1February2026), followedbyreturntoPetworth(8-10May2026).
“We’llalsohaveashowhereatthegalleryto coincidewiththeTattersallsyearlingsalesinthe autumn,thoughofcoursewe’reopensevendaysa weekandhavealltheworkonlinetoo,soit’seasyfor peopletoviewatanytime."
OneofGansera-Leveque’sartistswithaparticular feelforArabiansisBénédicteGelé,bornintheParis suburbsin1975,sheisaself-taughtartist,whose initiallydevelopedherartalongsidehercareerasan artdirectorandgraphicdesigner.
“Horsesaretheveryessenceofemotionsandpure expressionsandtheyhavethisstrongpowerof reflection.SoIpaintthemtoknowmebetter.”
TheArtandHorseRacingGalleryhasanumberof Gelé’sworkswhichrangefromsmallembroidered pieces[seeright]tolargecanvasesmeasuring146cm high.

TerenceGilbertalwaysshowedanaptitudeforart, copyingoldmasterswhilststillatschool.He’sbest knownnowinracingcirclesforhisracecard montagesoffamous(andfavourite)horses,soldas individualprivatecommissionsorpopularprints. ThoughGilbert,78,isfarfromaone-trickponyand hasbeenproducingartworkinadiverserangeof subjectsandmediumssincehewasateenager.
Hisfatherwasanavidpunteronhisdaysofffromhis jobattheNationalGallery,takingtheyoungGilbert toalltheLondonracecoursesbytrain.Gilbertspent alotoftimeatthegallerytooexplaining,“Ialways admiredTurner,Canalettowasagreatfavourite backthentoo,TheStonemason’sYardIremember asparticularlyfinepiece.Astimewenton,Istarted copyingthem,I’dhavebeenabout13,andIhadmy easelthereattheGallery,asotherartistsdo, ambitiouslystartingwithbigpieces,likethoseby ClaudeLorrain.MyteachersgotmeintoCamberwell ArtSchoolataveryyoungage,Iwasonly15, everybodyelsewasatleasttwoyearsolderthanme,
itwasverylimitedthough,notfulltime.”
Whenhisfatherdiedwhenhewas16,Gilbert neededtoearnaliving,sostartedinadvertisingasa junior,quicklymovingontotheagencystudioitself, drawingkeylinesforbrochures,andlearninghowto layoutmagazines.
“LuckilyenoughIwassittingnexttosomeofthe greatillustratorsofthetime,RenatoFratini,Gino D’Achille,PinoDell'Orco,theItalianswereherein LondonandIwasinthethickofit.Fratinididthe JamesBondposterforFromRussiawithLovefor example.Iprogressedtodoingsomeillustrationsof myown,workingforDavidJuddAssociatesLimited, theywerethecrèmedelacrème,withallthebest artists.Ilearntalotofthetechniquesofcommercial illustrationfromthosepeople.Then,whenIwas19,I decidedtobranchoutonmyown.Ihadafew contacts,andIstarteddoingillustrationsfor magazines.Allthemagazinesofthetimeused illustrationssotherewasplentyofwork,andfrom thereIslowlymovedthingsalong.”
MovingoutofLondontoMaidenheadin1969,wasa shocktothesystematfirst,“tooquiet,butLondon wastoonoisyformywife!”andfromanupstairs bedroomstudiohehasworkedonanalmostdaily basiseversince.Payingthebillsatthattimewere bookcoverillustrations,aspartoftheriseofpopular pulpfiction.Hiscommissionswouldcomeby consignments,“Onedayitwas18th centuryromantic novelsbyGeorgetteHeyer,thenextitwouldbe WorldWarII,suchasCorneliusRyan’s TheLongest Day.”
Itallchangedinthemid70s,“Mywifesawanarticle aboutAdnanKhashoggi,anditmentioneda collectionofartthathe’dboughtfromtheMathaf GalleryinLondon.Icontactedthemjustattheright time,astheywerelookingforanartisttogotooutto theMiddleEast.
“TheychosemeandIwentouttotheretopaint. Backthenithadbeenataboothingsonoonehad paintedthesecountries,alltheearlierOrientalist paintershadgonetoEgyptorTurkey,sothereforeI wasoneofthefirsttopaintthere,asitisnow.Iwas withthemforaboutfiveyears.Iusedtopaintatleast fourorfiveofpaintingsforOmaneachyear,aswell asportraitsofSheikhZayedandotherrulersand someofoldDubaibeforeitwasdeveloped,for
SheikhMohammedbinRashidAlMaktoum.” ManyofhisMiddleEasternworksarekeenly observedlandscapesandpeopleatwork,a depictinglifewhichisslowlyslippingawayasthose countriesdevelopandembraceWesternculture. Morerecentlyhehaspaintedanumberofstriking studiesoftheArabianhorsewearingtraditional harnessonagoldleafbackground.
“AtthesametimeasIwasdoingthosepaintingsfor theMathaf,I’dalsostartedtodosomeracingstuff, themontage’sontheracecards.Astheracingwork pickedup,Igottoknowsometrainers,mostlyin Ireland.IknewPeterO’Sullevanverywellandhe introducedmetoJohnMagnier.Iwentoverto Coolmoretopainthishorses,includingGalileo,andI didaboutfourbigpaintingsoftheQueen’svisitin 2011.IalsopaintedYeats,andlaterIdidanotherof Galileoracing.MostoftheworkIdoinIrelandnowis forJPMcManus,thelastoneforhimwasIAm Maximus.I’mcurrentlypaintingthisyear’sGrand National,withNickRockettcomingoverthefence withIAmMaximusjustbehind,that’sfortheSirPeter O’SullevanCharitableTrustauctionlaterthisyear.”
Gilbert’sworksspansawidevarietyofmediums, techniquesandsubjectmatterforwhichhecredits hisearlycommercialartistbeginnings.
“Iwasverygoodatfiguresinaction,sowhetherit wasagunslinger,oraGermanofficerfiringa machinegun,tomethefigureisthemainthing, dressingitjustgoesonthetop,itjustdeveloped.If youcandrawandpaintinillustration,you’llget assignmentsineverything,youcaneitherdoitor youcan’t,itwasthevarietyofsubjectsinillustration thatledmetopainteverything.
“I’vealwaysworkedinallmediums,pastels,penand ink,acrylics,oils.Withillustrationseverythingalways hadtobedonetomorrow,sothenIusedgouachea lotforpictures,Imakethemlooklikeoils,butby usinggouacheitdriesveryquickly.Thesedays, primarilyIuseacrylicfirstandthenoilsontop,soI don’thavetowaittoolongfortheunderpaintingto dry.I’mdoingalotmorecanvaspaintingnow,but illustrationswerealwaysonboard.I’vegotmore impressionisticwithsomeofmyworkinrecentyears andthecoloursareaveryhighkey.Mylatestisof thepaddockatAscot,whichisprovingavery popularprint.
The‘somethingelse’alsoextendstoLondon cityscapes,scenesfromtheballet,andhisloveof Jazz.Hissportingsubjectsareasbroadwith commissionstopaintEnglandRugbyfly-halfJohnny Wilkinson,ManchesterUnited’sDavidBeckham, RyanGiggsandOleGunnarSolskjærandboxing.A regularexhibitoratHenleyRegattaeveryyear,he
producesacollectionofcartooncharactersthat alwayssellout.
