Qatar International Stakes (Group 1PA) Race Preview

Al Ghadeer (FR) wins the 2024 Qatar International Stakes The Qatar Goodwood Festival, now presented by Visit Qatar, hosts Europe’s most valuable race for Arabians over a mile.

This is an overview of the seven anticipated runners ahead of Sunday’s final declarations, where Al Ghadeer bids to become the first horse to win three Qatar International Stakes on the road to another record, three Doha Triple Crowns, with the bonus for that achievement ,should he be successful, sponsored by Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club.

Al Ghadeer emulated both Ebraz and Lady Princess in winning back-to-back contests last year and bettered Ebraz by going on to win a second Qatar

Arabian World Cup (2000m, ParisLongchamp) and a second HH The Amir Sword (2400m) to gain that second Doha Triple Crown. Last year Al Ghadeer became the only horse apart from Tayf to be successful on the Sussex Downs without a recent prep race, though he did have a public gallop at La Teste as part of the Wathba Stallions day there on 12 July.

At the time of writing (Friday 25 July) the going is Good, Good to Soft in places, dry and sunny through to racing on Tuesday with the chance of an isolated light shower. 5mm of water will be applied to the Straight today.

Broke the track record, previously held by his sire Al Mourtajez, when winning this race for a second time last year. Since finishing second on his juvenile debut in a Group 3PA in 2022, he has been unbeaten in eleven consecutive Group races, including nine at the highest level. He was the highest rated three-year-old ever, was the highest rated four-year-old in Europe and is deservedly the highest rated Arabian in the world.

Won a weak looking Mazrat Al Ruwayah Group 2PA over this trip on at Meydan in March (Turf), and then a well beaten fourth back at that track for the Dubai Kahayla Classic over 2000m in April. No match for the classy HM Alchahine in Germany over this trip on European reappearance earlier this month, and his only other black-type success was also a Group 2PA, in the Qatar National Day Trophy over 2000m at Al Rayyan in Doha in December 2023, for his previous owner.

His wins have come from a mile to a mile and a half, on soft or quick Turf. Christophe Soumillon, who has ridden him in all his Group 1PA wins, is expected to ride.

Winning form at this distance on quick Turf a plus.

Hadaaya (GB)

Ch'ezza (FR) CH’EZZA OR 119 2018 H AF Albahar x Cherazade (Dormane) O: Abdulla Fahad Al-Attiyah B: Haras de Mandore T: Francois Rohaut Both his Group 1PA wins have come over 2000m at ParisLongchamp, most recently last September on Arc Trials Day in the Prix Dragon. Following that outing he was third to Al Ghadeer in the Qatar Arabian World Cup, fourth in Abu Dhabi’s HH The President Cup over 2200m, fourth to Al Ghadeer in the slightly reduced HH The Amir Sword (2300m) and failed to regain his UAE President Cup – Coupe de Europe title at ParisLongchamp on his Europe return in May, also finishing fourth.

A winner on good or softer, he has never raced short of 2000m, though stock by his sire have had plenty of success over a mile.

HADAAYA OR 92 2020 H No Risk Al Maury x Laqataat (Bengali D’Albret) O: Athbah Racing B: Shadwell Estates T: Mr Philip Collington Looked a hugely exciting young colt when winning his maiden last year by twelve lengths. Beaten less than two lengths next time, giving plenty of weight away in second, but got very jarred up in the process and not seen out again last term (the winner has gone on to gain a win in a Fillies’ Listed contest this season). Ready winner on seasonal return in a quick ground conditions event stepping up to this trip from seven furlongs in June, beating a good yardstick, with Jeewan well adrift in third.

Very unexposed and well related. Half-brother to a Group 1PA winner rated 125, and to two other winning fillies.

Izenterisky (GB) wins at Wolverhampton IZENTERISKY OR 79 2015 H No Risk Al Maury x Pinkie Tuscadero (Izentespeshal) O: Sheila Collington B: Mrs S Colllington T: Mr Philip Collington Career blighted with minor injuries but nonetheless has shown plenty of ability, returning from a near five-year absence to win a very valuable handicap at Chester last year over seven furlongs on Good to Soft.

His sire was world class at a mile and the dam was pretty useful around this trip in handicaps, winning twice under her trainer when he was a top amateur on Arabians. Izenterisky had looked very promising in his two starts in his debut season, beaten half a length over seven furlongs by a subsequent threetime winner and then fulfilling that promise stepped up to this distance, both at Wolverhampton. Sadly a minor injury curtailed his career, but he was kept busy at home in a variety of roles, before his miraculous return last season.

JEEWAN OR 73 2016 G Madjani x Volga De Faust (Munjiz) O: Maddy Plumb B: Shadwell Stud T: Barry Brennan Brought out of premature retirement to win on his return over 1m5f in 2024 on soft, having also won over 2m1f on good in 2022. Has showed enough

turn of foot to get placed over this trip at a much lower level since the addition of blinkers and just touched off in a handicap over this distance, giving two stone to the winner, on his latest outing.

Sire was a three-time Dubai Kahayla Classic winner, noted as a source of stamina. Dam won over 2000m in France, out of a winning sprinter.

RAJAAZ OR 97 2021 H Al Mourtajez x Chalwa Du Breuil (Mahabb) O: Al Shaqab Racing B: Al Shaqab T: Francois Rohaut Winning juvenile over 2100m on soft (sporting blinkers), beating a subsequent Group 3PA winner and French Arabian Derby third, Moneer. Has yet to progress as expected, finishing last of seven on his first try at lesser Black Type, over this trip in October, and well behind, back up in trip on his seasonal reappearance in March. Better tried over 2300m in May (carrying the first colours) when a very narrow margin second on Good to Soft at Dax, though the form of that race doesn’t look particularly strong at this stage.

Very keen and pulled hard returning to Toulouse on latest in June, failing to pick up when required and staying on for fourth returning to 2100m. Has been running this season in Cheekpieces and on the basis of current form, looks to be the pacemaker for Al Ghadeer.

Art & Horseracing Gallery Newmarket

Ilka Gansera-Leveque inside one of her stable galleries at Saint Wendred's Ilka Gansera-Leveque, 46, is a racehorse trainer and practising vet based at Saint Wendred’s in Newmarket, horseracing’s headquarters. That would be enough for most people but following a pop-up art show at the yard she runs with her husband Stephane Leveque, she decided to take her Art as seriously as her horseracing.

“Originally the idea was to do an open day for the yard during the 2023 Guineas weekend, but putting a different twist on it by having an art exhibition alongside. However it developed into its own entity, gained momentum and just had a real buzz about it, so I ran with it. The yard and the gallery are synergistic, but they have their own distinct space too.”

What had started out as an ‘add-on’ as part of a special open day weekend for owners and to draw in the public, has blossomed into a full-time enterprise giving her a completely new ‘stable’ of clients.

Originally from Germany, following a three-year jockey apprenticeship to champion trainer Bruno Shcuetz, she then went to California and spent a year with Monty Roberts at Flag Is Up Farm to further

develop her equine skills. After graduation as a veterinarian in 2009 she came to Newmarket, initially working for Rossdales before setting up on her own, later taking out her trainers’ license in 2012. Though a trainer of thoroughbreds, both her and her husband also have experience of racing Arabians, with the American bred and owned Storm Troupour, with whom they won at Royal Windsor on only his second UK start.

Married to Frenchman, she already had quite an international background which has also been reflected in her choice of artists which are similarly international. Her first show featured the work of 14 British, French, South African and American artists and sculptors alongside the racehorses in her Hamilton Road stables. By 2025 this has expanded to include artists from Canada, Italy, the former Czech Republic, Lithuania, Spain and the Ukraine.

“At the beginning it was a way to promote my yard and my training, but now it’s become a healthy thing for me, as I don’t have expectations attached to it, so by letting it be free, it actually grew quicker and bigger.

9 “Though I guess it brought out the competitiveness in me, as if I’m going to do something, I want to do it right and be professional. Through my upbringing and though racing I’ve always travelled the world and when I have, I’ve visited museums and art galleries, so I’ve always had an interest as a layman, but I’ve not studied anything formally. I think there are similarities in a broader way, as with a racehorse you share it with friends and family, it’s something that you can enjoy as a group, and I think it’s the same with buying art, it says something about you and it evokes emotion, so the more you think about it, the more similarities there are.”

pottery in the future, and he was always very good at drawing, especially when out daughter Elea was younger.

She feels no conflict between her worlds and nor does she find juggling her time a problem, explaining,“I would say when you’re an entrepreneur and you’re self-employed, work life balance is not relevant, everything is my life. Sometimes I write invoices at night or on a Sunday, that’s just how it is.

It fell into our lives, my husband Stephane is involved too, though initially he questioned what I was doing!

He’s supportive and also very creative, though his focus is the horses, he’s also interested in doing

Thanks to inheriting a pitch on retirement of one her artists’ representatives, she jumped in at the deep end, exhibiting at one of the Association of Art and Antique Dealers (LAPADA) fairs at Petworth House in West Sussex, just 20 minutes from Goodwood.

Petworth Park Antiques and Fine Art Fair is held in a purpose built marquee in the grounds of the National Trust property and attracts around 60 exhibitors a year.

“I wanted to take it seriously and establish the gallery, so you have to do the art fairs, which I researched, though of course they come with a cost.

Stephane’s got a really good eye for hanging so he’s integral to setting out the stand at the fairs. It’s a logistical thing, Elea’s is now old enough to help at the fairs if we have runners and I have to go racing, so we have a small team I can call on that can represent the art really well in my absence.”

10 “Petworth is a very special fair as you have to be a LAPADA member to exhibit. Luckily I gained ‘grandmother’ rights through showing the work of Anna Pugh. Next year, having been established for three years, I will be eligible to join as a member in my own right.

“We have everything from modern art to old masters, all genres, and of course the sculptures too. With the sculptures we started off with more traditional bronzes and ceramics and now we have these unique hand carved wooden falcons from Julian Stanley. The work had to be good, but I have to love it too, there’s needs to be a human connection, if one of those elements is missing, I can’t work with the person. This doesn’t feel like work to me because it all feels like a bonus, I’m excited by it.

“I go with art that makes you feel good, portraying the beauty of nature and the beauty of hard work.”

Importantly when she is at the fairs, which obviously wouldn’t have an exclusively ‘horsey’ clientele, she feels that she is representing horseracing and is proud of it too.

“In setting up for a fair like Petworth, obviously the stands dimensions come into consideration, but I like to have a theme in my head, I think about the type of people that will be going, they won’t just be ‘horsey’ so I like to try and tell a story within the stand - I’m one of the few galleries there that has contemporary art. The simple thing would be to devote a wall to each artist but that’s never what we do, you want to sell as much as you can, but you don’t want to overhang either. Often these ideas come right before I go to sleep! But I always know how I want it look before we get there to set up. We wanted to avoid it looking too clinical.”

Despite her equine surroundings, she welcomes a broad range of subject matter, so not just racing or sport, as well as a wide variety of genres and artists.

Ranging from Raoul Millais, an established figurative equestrian painter who died in 1999, to modern landscapes by Milan Ivani!, from the former Czech Republic who has been in the UK since 1970.

“Most of the fairs run over a weekend, so Petworth is Friday through Sunday, with set up on the Thursday.

It’s such as classy event. One of my American artists who came to the opening said it was ‘like being in a Jane Austen novel’.

Ganserva-Leveque was preparing for the Game Fair held at the end of July at Ragley Hall near Stratford Upon Avon, with the next port of call being Fresh Art at Alexandra Palace (30 January – 1 February 2026), followed by return to Petworth (8-10 May 2026).

“We’ll also have a show here at the gallery to coincide with the Tattersalls yearling sales in the autumn, though of course we’re open seven days a week and have all the work online too, so it’s easy for people to view at any time."

'Expression 31t' mixed media on canvas by Bénédicte Gelé One of Gansera-Leveque’s artists with a particular feel for Arabians is Bénédicte Gelé, born in the Paris suburbs in 1975, she is a self-taught artist, whose initially developed her art alongside her career as an art director and graphic designer.

“Horses are the very essence of emotions and pure expressions and they have this strong power of reflection. So I paint them to know me better.”

Terence Gilbert A master of diversity

Terence Gilbert always showed an aptitude for art, copying old masters whilst still at school. He’s best known now in racing circles for his racecard montages of famous (and favourite) horses, sold as individual private commissions or popular prints.

Though Gilbert, 78, is far from a one-trick pony and has been producing artwork in a diverse range of subjects and mediums since he was a teenager.

His father was an avid punter on his days off from his job at the National Gallery, taking the young Gilbert to all the London racecourses by train. Gilbert spent a lot of time at the gallery too explaining, “I always admired Turner, Canaletto was a great favourite back then too, The Stonemason’s Yard I remember as particularly fine piece. As time went on, I started copying them, I’d have been about 13, and I had my easel there at the Gallery, as other artists do, ambitiously starting with big pieces, like those by Claude Lorrain. My teachers got me into Camberwell Art School at a very young age, I was only 15, everybody else was at least two years older than me,

it was very limited though, not full time.”

When his father died when he was 16, Gilbert needed to earn a living, so started in advertising as a junior, quickly moving on to the agency studio itself, drawing keylines for brochures, and learning how to lay out magazines.

“Luckily enough I was sitting next to some of the great illustrators of the time, Renato Fratini, Gino D’Achille, Pino Dell'Orco, the Italians were here in London and I was in the thick of it. Fratini did the James Bond poster for From Russia with Love for example. I progressed to doing some illustrations of my own, working for David Judd Associates Limited, they were the crème de la crème, with all the best artists. I learnt a lot of the techniques of commercial illustration from those people. Then, when I was 19, I decided to branch out on my own. I had a few contacts, and I started doing illustrations for magazines. All the magazines of the time used illustrations so there was plenty of work, and from there I slowly moved things along.”

13 Moving out of London to Maidenhead in 1969, was a shock to the system at first, “too quiet, but London was too noisy for my wife!” and from an upstairs bedroom studio he has worked on an almost daily basis ever since. Paying the bills at that time were book cover illustrations, as part of the rise of popular pulp fiction. His commissions would come by consignments, “One day it was 18th century romantic novels by Georgette Heyer, the next it would be World War II, such as Cornelius Ryan’s The Longest Day.” It all changed in the mid 70s, “My wife saw an article about Adnan Khashoggi, and it mentioned a collection of art that he’d bought from the Mathaf Gallery in London. I contacted them just at the right time, as they were looking for an artist to go to out to the Middle East.

“They chose me and I went out to there to paint.

Back then it had been a taboo thing so no one had painted these countries, all the earlier Orientalist painters had gone to Egypt or Turkey, so therefore I was one of the first to paint there, as it is now. I was with them for about five years. I used to paint at least four or five of paintings for Oman each year, as well as portraits of Sheikh Zayed and other rulers and some of old Dubai before it was developed, for

Many of his Middle Eastern works are keenly observed landscapes and people at work, a depicting life which is slowly slipping away as those countries develop and embrace Western culture.

More recently he has painted a number of striking studies of the Arabian horse wearing traditional harness on a gold leaf background.

“At the same time as I was doing those paintings for the Mathaf, I’d also started to do some racing stuff, the montage’s on the racecards. As the racing work picked up, I got to know some trainers, mostly in Ireland. I knew Peter O’Sullevan very well and he introduced me to John Magnier. I went over to Coolmore to paint his horses, including Galileo, and I did about four big paintings of the Queen’s visit in 2011. I also painted Yeats, and later I did another of Galileo racing. Most of the work I do in Ireland now is for JP McManus, the last one for him was I Am Maximus. I’m currently painting this year’s Grand National, with Nick Rockett coming over the fence with I Am Maximus just behind, that’s for the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust auction later this year.”

Gilbert’s works spans a wide variety of mediums, techniques and subject matter for which he credits his early commercial artist beginnings.

“I was very good at figures in action, so whether it was a gunslinger, or a German officer firing a machine gun, to me the figure is the main thing, dressing it just goes on the top, it just developed. If you can draw and paint in illustration, you’ll get assignments in everything, you can either do it or you can’t, it was the variety of subjects in illustration that led me to paint everything.

“I’ve always worked in all mediums, pastels, pen and ink, acrylics, oils. With illustrations everything always had to be done tomorrow, so then I used gouache a lot for pictures, I make them look like oils, but by using gouache it dries very quickly. These days, primarily I use acrylic first and then oils on top, so I don’t have to wait too long for the under painting to dry. I’m doing a lot more canvas painting now, but illustrations were always on board. I’ve got more impressionistic with some of my work in recent years and the colours are a very high key. My latest is of the paddock at Ascot, which is proving a very popular print.

The ‘something else’ also extends to London cityscapes, scenes from the ballet, and his love of Jazz. His sporting subjects are as broad with commissions to paint England Rugby fly-half Johnny Wilkinson, Manchester United’s David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Ole Gunnar Solskjær and boxing. A regular exhibitor at Henley Regatta every year, he

produces a collection of cartoon characters that always sell out.

Retuning to equestrianism, he observes, “These days I find traditional types of painting a bit flat, and there are so many people producing these types of scenes, you try to do something different, I don’t want it to look like a photograph. A painting allows you to add information that might not be easily seen in a photograph which then adds narrative to the scene.

“So I’ve moved towards this more impressionistic style, reminiscent of Raoul Dufy, but my own interpretation. I’ve done about 30 of those larger pictures of paddock and racecourse scenes at York and Cheltenham and Ascot. From a commercial aspect those horses on the racecards, they’re very easy to personalise, whether you’re an owner, a trainer or a punter that won big – the racecard adds a bit of authority to the piece, it’s a record of the day, I like to add little jots on there about the trainer and so on, so it feels like it’s been painted on the spot.”

He concludes, “I know most artists specialise in one subject and they get known for that, but on the other hand because I’m so diverse, I’m never out of work!” https://www.terencegilbert.com
