Happy New Year! I hope that you and your families had a blessed holiday season. We now have 2022 behind us. Even as we continue to face uncertain times in our country and more importantly in agriculture, the future within the American Black Hereford breed is bright.
Ernie Dominguez ABHA Executive DirectorThis is an interesting time for agriculture with input prices on the climb and drought and labor shortages, this is tough for even the most efficient operations. Thankfully, we are seeing the reciprocal of this in cattle and commodity prices. Some say that 2023 could be a record-breaking year for cattle prices and we will be hoping that it is. Particularly in the cattle business, when we see demand and prices increase, the selection pressure and quality control decreases. The level of Black Hereford cattle currently available are gaining attention across the cattle industry and we are seeing more seedstock producers from other breeds sample and look into what we have to offer. Our genetic predictors continue to improve with accuracy as we have seen an increase in the use of genomic testing by our members and more raw data being submitted. All these things are vital to Black Hereford gaining market share and we must keep striving for more if we want to see our breed continue to grow.
We recently completed our move to International Genetic Solutions (IGS) as our EPD service provider. IGS is a multi-breed genetic evaluation in which 20 progressive breed association partners collaborate to enhance commercial profitability. The collaboration has yielded the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle with more than 20 million animals and greater than 350,000 genotypes. IGS is leveraging the data across all breed association partners and using that information to increase the accuracy of prediction of our EPDs. The move to IGS also puts the ABHA on a weekly evaluation for our EPDs and a regular update cycle for any externals meeting minimum threshold criteria on accuracies.
So, I say to you as breeders, great work and please stay the course, we are on the correct path. The use of progressive genetics, leveraging science and genomics, and ramping up your local marketing are the ingredients needed to reach our destination.
Your American Black Hereford Association closed out another great year in calendar year 2022. The ABHA is growing in every metric such as membership, registrations, and DNA. The success of this association is due to the hard work and dedication by our members to improve genetics and make the necessary changes that the beef industry has demanded. Our membership is working hard to keep Black Hereford cattle at the forefront of the industry and is willing to make difficult decisions in order to continue growth and success. We must continue to make advancements in our genetics to improve our position in the industry, and I know we are up to the challenge.
I want to thank our Board of Directors, our committees, and the entire membership for helping make 2022 a tremendous year for our association. The American Black Hereford breed is on fire! Let’s not even think about getting complacent, because we are just getting started. I want each one of you to pull your hat down tight and kick it in overdrive. Continue to make your cattle better and help push our breed to the next level. Let’s continue the ride.
Please reach out if you have any questions or ideas for how we can continue to make a positive impact for the breed and this industry. We are all in this together, we will continue to work together to keep the ABHA strong, and American Black Hereford proud. We truly have some of the most dedicated, selfless people in the cattle business that support Black Hereford and its members. Let’s continue to show the industry what the American Black Hereford has to offer.
Have a blessed start to the New Year!
ABHA
Well, here we are coming in on 2023 and what a year 2022 has been! The rain has finally made it to most of us across the nation just in time to get cold again, but we are thankful.
As I said, 2022 is now behind us and what a great year it has been for us in the ABHA. There are so many things we have accomplished. Our membership is up as well as our registrations, so that means we are growing and growing quickly. As many of you have noticed by now, our EPDs are up and live with IGS. A move that we have been trying to get done for several years now and it has finally come to pass. I have had several members calling that are very happy with the way it has turned out.

As I have said before, IGS runs genetic evaluations every week, so if you see an error in any of your animals you can let us know and we can look into it and have it fixed in the following weeks instead of waiting 3 or 4 months for a new run. This will be very good for those of you that have sales planned or just need your EDPs up to date. Please turn in and continue to turn in your data, so this can be even better.
I want to thank the Board and Ernie for working on this very diligently over the past year. I know it took longer than expected, but it was a much bigger task than most thought it would be and I hope it serves as a tool to help you market your animals.
Speaking of marketing animals, we have had a few successful sales in the pass couple of months. The Missouri sale went very well, and I want to say Jason, Mike, and all the consigners did a great job to make that sale a success. If you have never been to that sale facility, you need to go next year. It is a very nice place. The cattle looked good and across the breed as a whole, I see the quality getting better and better every year. The Holiday Showcase Online sale was very much a success. I want say thank you to Bobby and Brett Singleton and all the consigners to that sale. They did a great job and had some of the best cattle the breed has to offer in the sale and did a very professional job with the pictures and videos. I was impressed - thank you all for setting a standard to follow.
Next, I have put together a task force of 9 members to start researching the idea of whole herd reporting for the ABHA. This is going to be another long and very tough task. Mark Ipsen is going to chair this and help spearhead it for us. I believe Mark has a good understanding of how whole herd works being also involved with the Angus and Hereford Associations and familiar with their programs. This is going to take some time to research and pull together all the information we need as a board to make the decision and understand whether or not this is a good move for our association. More to come on this subject, but just know we will be rolling out more information on this topic in the near future.
Lastly, I hope you all had a great Christmas and have a great 2023. I want to personally say thank you to each member for believing in me as your President. Your support and encouraging words have been much appreciated and I thank you for that.
God Bless you and your families.

Change can be a scary concept to some yet sought after by others. Many breeders wonder about the changes on the horizon once the new evaluation, Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT, is fully implemented. That change may be nerve-racking but in reality, things should change. Why invest in new and improved methods if you get the same answers? Here are key changes to expect with the new genetic evaluation:
1. Movement of EPDs and reranking. EPDs will change especially in younger, lower accuracy cattle. Members should expect movement in lower accuracy cattle, as seen in the existing evaluations, because they may have new progeny data reported. Some cattle will move in a favorable direction while others will do the opposite. Keep in mind even if the EPDs get worse, the prediction of them is more accurate. With Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT, we will have more accurate EPDs earlier in an animal’s life.
2. More accurate accuracy. This idea takes a little time to sink in. The accuracy reported for each EPD will be more directly calculated and thus closer to the “real” accuracy. The methods to solve accuracy directly are extremely difficult and take a lot of computer power. With the previous Cornell software it was not possible to solve for accuracy directly so an approximation method was used to estimate accuracy for each EPD. There were inherent flaws with approximating the accuracy with the previous method. Now with BOLT software, the accuracy reported with the EPD will be more reliable.
3. Reported accuracies will tend to be lower. One of the inherent flaws in the approximation methods used to find accuracy in the previous evaluation, and in all evaluations not produced through BOLT, was they frequently overestimated accuracy, especially for younger animals. This was known for a long time, but there was no way to calculate the accuracies directly. With BOLT, having accuracy more directly solved results in a more reliable accuracy but that accuracy will often be numerically lower than the previous evaluation would predict. However, the new reported accuracies with BOLT should better represent the possible changes for the EPDs.
4. DNA testing will have a larger impact. With the switch to BOLT software, IGS will use Single-step genomic evaluation on all EPDs (currently using Single Step for Stayability EPDs). Single-step uses the DNA markers, pedigree information, and phenotypic data simultaneously in the prediction of the EPDs. Previously molecular breeding values (MBVs) were calculated from the genomic information and those MBVs were blended separately into the EPD prediction. The Single-step method squeezes more information from the DNA markers than the previous approach allowed. Also, there are biases inherent in the blending process that aren’t a problem with the Single-step approach. Additionally, with Single-step, the genomic information will not only enhance EPDs for the genotyped animal but also will be used in the EPD estimates of relatives.
5. Weekly genetic evaluation runs. With the horsepower behind BOLT, IGS can run genetic evaluations weekly. This has many benefits. It allows members to get more immediate feedback after submitting their records. If members miss a deadline, they can catch the next evaluation run the following week. It allows for more accurate EPDs throughout the year and faster incorporation of the genomics. This also means the EPDs put in print will quickly be outdated.
Genetic evaluation is not stagnant. There will always be improvements as new research in animal breeding, genomics, and statistics advance. BOLT software is revolutionary in the innate flexibility, the computational power, and the statistical methods made possible using this software. Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT promises more accurate EPDs, accuracies, and better use of genomics all delivered to you on a weekly basis. ◆

Hey, y’all! My name is Emily Tabor, and I am your reigning National Black Hereford Queen. I am 18 years old and reside in Kentucky. I have been a member of the AJBHA for 3 years now and I can easily say that joining this amazing association has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. The American Black Hereford Association welcomed me with open arms and the best way I could think of to offer my gratitude was to become its queen. My heart belongs to the ABHA, but I also have a passion for the beef industry in its entirety. I am an active member of the Kentucky Jr. Cattlemen’s Association and the KY Beef Council. Early in December, I was selected to attend the Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium where I learned more about the beef industry and how Nebraska beef production differs from that in Kentucky. While participating in these organizations, I take every opportunity to promote and/or discuss the Black Hereford breed.
As we roll into 2023, I just want to take a second to acknowledge and congratulate all the breeders who work to make this breed the best. The quality of the Black Hereford breed keeps getting better and better and I expect the bar to continue to rise this upcoming year. I would also like to congratulate all the exhibitors who work day in and day out making their cattle look the absolute best. I have been fortunate to be in the presence of both exceptional breeders and exhibitors over the last 3 months while attending the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, and at Cattlemen’s Congress. As we finish up in OKC, our next big national show is Junior Nationals, which will be held in June in Cookeville, Tennessee. I am excited to see all our juniors there and especially the ones that have joined us in the last year. The Junior Board is working diligently to bring some new opportunities, learning experiences, and most importantly fun for all of the 2023 participants. ABHA Junior Nationals get bigger and better every year, and I am sure that this year will not be any different. Hope to see y’all in June! ABHA
What a year 2022 has been for the for the Juniors of this wonderful breed. Having the largest Junior Nationals to date with tons of new faces, I feel 2023 will bring even more growth and interest for just what this breed and its members have to offer.
As we grow as a breed, I hope we continue to stay connected and willing to lend a helping hand to all the new members. I would like to thank all the sponsors of the AJBHA, without your support we wouldn’t be where we are today. I look forward to seeing all of you around and throughout the coming year. Remember, save the date for the 2023 Junior Nationals taking place June 14-17 in Cookeville, TN! Keep an eye out for new announcements throughout the coming year as we share more information on one of our most anticipated Junior events of the year.
Best Wishes in 2023! ABHA
