HARRIS has been painting for as long as she can remember.

After attending Leeds Art College she followed a career in teaching until, deciding life is too short, gave this up in 2004 to paint full time.

Christina uses paint to great effect to create the depth of fleece found in many breeds of sheep whilst the simplicity of a white or grey background serves to emphasise the lonely, uncompromising moods of a Yorkshire winter.

She is represented at carefully selected galleries in the north of England and was featured in the Dales Diary television programme in 2008. Her work has travelled as far as Australia, Canada, France, USA, Poland, Austria and even Japan as well as being widely collected in the UK.

With Christmas fast approaching it seems a good idea to carry on from last month’s article and look at how to approach choosing whisky for a gift. Bearing in mind the principal that the whiskies people enjoy are influenced more by personal preferences and past experience than age or gender some points to consider include: Do you know what style of whisky the person you are giving the gift to likes? A quick look through their current whisky collection may give you some answers or some casual questions dropped into conversation…

Are they happy to try whisk(e)y from a country other than Scotland?

Is this the main present or just a little extra?

What’s your budget?

Once you have some idea of the above then you are well armed to find the right gift and for those who enjoy the lighter whiskies as well as the Speyside whiskies mentioned last time you could look at something from the Lowlands - perennial favourites from these two regions include Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie, Aberlour, Benriach and Balvenie. And for a sweet, smooth dram then you can’t go far wrong with Irish whiskies – Redbreast being a particular favourite of ours.

For someone who loves the richer flavoured whiskies then look towards the Highlands and Islands – a sherried Glenfarclas, a delicious Scapa, or, if you want to go completely off piste, how about the big but smooth delights of the Japanese Nikka From the Barrel?

If you want to thrill a peat lover and can’t afford the fortune required nowadays to buy Port Ellen as a single malt then go for the Christmas edition of Big Peat – a cask strength vatted malt that has a proportion of Port Ellen along with whisky from 3 other distilleries on Islay.

Finally, if you’re on a budget or the whisky is just for a stocking filler then there are plenty of Gift Packs and 20cl bottles to choose from and these are the ideal way to spread your bets!

Ultimately, most whisky lovers do enjoy trying different styles so don’t worry too much if you can’t find out what their preferred whisky is and, you never know, you might by accident discover a new favourite for them!

Talk to the Vet!

As the days grow shorter and thoughts turn to Christmas the excitement builds, especially amongst our children.

However, for Rover and Felix hidden dangers abound.

If we are honest, Christmas time can be stressful as well as enjoyable for all sorts of reasons and our pets are no exception.

There are numerous sources of stress for our furry friends at this time of year. The altered routine in the house, unusual events like parties and displacement from usual resting places like spare rooms can all contribute. There may be unfamiliar visitors (especially other pets and children), sudden noises from fireworks and crackers and the presence of unfamiliar objects.

Potential changes in feeding patterns and levels of attention all play their part too and, if you are visiting over Christmas, a kennel or cattery stay and travel come into play.

So, as you can see, the sources of stress are numerous and varied. Some of these can be avoided by a little forethought, however some cannot. In these circumstances have a chat with your vet or veterinary nurse as there are various products including pheromone diffusers and anti anxiety supplements that can help the situation and give Rover and Felix a happy Christmas too.

“But how do I know if my pet is stressed?”

The following are typical signs: Over grooming, altered demeanour, reduced play, changed interactions with people, changed resting place, changed use of environment, altered posture, increased hiding, reduced play behaviour and house soiling.

But this is not all. There are potential killers lurking in the yuletide home. There are lots of distractions and it is easy for our pets to get access to things that aren't good for them and potentially fatal!

By no means an exhaustive list would include chocolate, lilies, antifreeze, plant bulbs, daffodils, grapes, raisins and sultanas (Christmas Cake and Pudding), liquorice, onions, turkey bones, Poinsettia, Mistletoe and alcohol. A small piece of Christmas Cake or high cocoa content chocolate can kill a small dog!

A true story of a shattered childhood.

This book is not a recent publication but is a book that I only recently came across. I feel that it is worth a review as there may be others who have missed it and who may also enjoy this fascinating eye opener.

Remembering Judith is an extraordinary biography on many levels, written by Judith’s daughter Ruth, about her mother’s tragic struggle with depression and anorexia. It is set in Britain in the 1950’s when far less was known about these diseases than is now. It is a book about love, food and guilt.

Judith came from Hamburg and her husband Geoffrey came from Breslau. They escaped the holocaust and met and married in Britain.

Ruth has spent most of her childhood and her young adult years caring for her mother. Her father distanced himself physically and emotionally from his family. He travelled extensively for business and was rarely at home leaving Ruth to deal with the task of looking after her mother while attending school and trying to make friendships of her own.

Not only are the trials of Judith’s life portrayed but the effect it all had on Ruth’s own feelings about food and her own appearance.

This book is well written, it is easy to read although the content is harrowing. Ruth must be admired for writing such a frank description of her childhood which was far from ideal and she is not to be envied.

Hare in the woods

Hare in the woods has finally opened in Faringdon! It has taken us 5 weeks from signing the lease to get things ready, hopefully with a few tongues wagging as we went! By the way, Hare in the Woods derives from the fact my son is called Harley, which means exactly that! We also felt it had a lovely country feel, very much in keeping with Faringdon itself!

You may all remember, 11 London street used to be the cook shop, which is quite apt really! This wonderful unit was ripe for change and it has lent itself beautifully to my vision of a fine food shop with an everyday feel to it. The gorgeous window draws in the light giving the shop a lovely airy feel and you can even come and sit in the window in the unique patchwork chair and perhaps watch the world go by!

Traiteur is a French term for a shop where you can buy ready prepared food and that is exactly an avenue I have taken. I know we are in England, but it's a concept I feel is interesting and convenient for today's living. The cooking is all done on site in the little kitchen set up in the shop itself. peer in the window or pop in for a cooking tip or two!

So freshly prepared meals, soups, puddings and cakes are on the menu every day alongside whole foods, fresh vegetables, cheeses and groceries like salt, biscuits and chutney.

So please do come for a little mooch round. You may even be able to smell the shop way before you see it! We look forward to meeting the lovely people of Faringdon.

Birdie Tales Most of us love feeding garden birds, but specialist seeds and nuts can be expensive.

With a bit of thought this Christmas you can minimize the cost to your pocket and offer our little feathered friends some supplementary food treats that could make the all-important difference between starvation and survival.

Consider the wildlife in your garden before disposing of Christmas dinners this year – but please be aware that that not all foods are suitable.

Avoid cooked meats, salty snacks such as peanuts and crisps, as most birds cannot process salt and may even die if given too much. Bread is not calorie dense, and whilst it will not cause any harm, there is little benefit to be gained from it.

Birds need high energy food during the cold weather to keep their body temperature high enough to get through the chilly, frosty winter nights.

High energy-rich fat balls are ideal, instead of buying fat balls, make your own. The ingredients are cheap and cheerful and you don’t need the culinary skills of Jamie Oliver. Simply mix two thirds of dried fruit and porridge oats with melted suet or lard; place in the fridge to set before cutting into small size portions. These can be put on the bird table or hung from a tree or bush. Birds love them!

Other options are even easier, before tipping your Christmas leftovers in the bin, remember birds adore roast potatoes, cooked or uncooked rice, grated cheese, segments of fruit and chopped vegetables.

So don’t just hand round Christmas cake and fruit to family and friends. If you can’t face another mince pie, they can.

Dehydration is as big a problem for garden birds as hunger when it’s cold and icy, so please make sure there’s a plentiful supply of water for them. Break the ice on birdbaths when it’s freezing or simply empty and refill each day. Water isn’t only vital for drinking, it’s also necessary for keeping birds feathers in good condition and well insulated against the cold.

Finally in the event we get a white Christmas, don’t forget to clear a patch in the snow before scattering any food for birds.

Lifestyle, not diets - Life is full of temptations. It is good to be a healthy weight and to manage your eating. However, dieting as we know it is not the way to do it.

For long-term weight loss to work for you it is necessary that you change your nutritional habits, exercise habits, and your lifestyle habits.

I can visualise liquidising it and pouring it into a bottle, using your finger to poke that last stubborn currant into it?

Thankfully, time and tradition have seen the evolution of stunningly ‘Christmassy’ fortified wines.

Technically, fortified wine is wine to which a spirit (typically brandy) has been added. Great examples of fortified wines are port, sherry and Madeira.

Going back to my Australian roots, I have discovered an excellent example of fortified shiraz. As the term ‘port’ is preserved exclusively for the fortified wines of the Douro Valley, Portugal, the Australian custom of naming things as they are, creatively call fortified shiraz (you guessed it ); fortified shiraz!

This ‘little beauty’ (ahh, the lingo just flows – I am now in the zone!) comes from the stable of d’Arenberg, McLaren Vale, South Australia. As a producer, they have established themselves well on the UK market, with quirky names for their wines such as ‘The Laughing Magpie’, ‘The Noble Prankster’ and ‘The Feral Fox’ to name a few (sorry, I have seriously mislead you; there are no laughing magpies, noble pranksters or feral foxes contained in said bottles!).

D’Arenberg Fortified Shiraz is produced from the shiraz vines of their first declared vintage (1928). These old vines are stumpy, gnarled and deep rooted, prized for their small bunches of deep coloured and flavoured grapes. They are left on the vines until the late summer, achieving extreme ripeness and are then hand harvested.

Traditional wine making techniques, such as open fermentation and basket pressing are used in order to retain purity of fruit character. Following pressing, brandy spirit is added, which stops fermentation, retaining sweet, ripe fruit richness.

Deep black in appearance, with a deep ruby hue, the 2007 vintage has intense aromas of ripe blackberry fruit and liquorice on the initial approach. Developed aromas and flavours follow; mixed spice, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg and as it opens, complexity comes into full swing; deeper blackberry and mulberry fruits with coffee and dried fruits with a hint of star anise. It finishes sweet but in perfect harmony with its weight and structure.

Folly Park ‘Conservation’ The History and an Update Folly Park, locally known as Jespers Hill, was once the site of a quarry. Over the past 30 years it has been used as a dumping ground for excess soil from major works in the town altering the landscape and natural habitat of the area.

The Local Plan of 2001 contained a proposal for informal recreation use of Folly Park. Construction started in October 2002 with a significant grant from the Countryside Agency’s Sustainability Fund. This enabled the first phase of the park development which included paths, car park, picnic areas, fishing platforms, bird and bat boxes and tree planting.

The Council laid conditions for the protection of hedgerows from housing developments. Extensive planting was carried out and plans for the expansion and planting of the land adjoining the Folly Park have been drawn.

In 2004 Michie Herbert, a local artist from Great Coxwell, who worked on the special project with Faringdon Junior School pupils, produced a sculpture for the park. In recent years the field above that sculpture has been developed into a new cricket pitch and skate park while the Bloor Homes housing development has been re-landscaped to its west.

The Conservation Project is being led by the FocusOn team, talks of developing similar projects as in 2004 are being held with the Faringdon Academy of Schools, the Bee-Guardians and the Friends of The Folly Park. The aim being to enhance the area for the enjoyment of the community, provide opportunities for educational conservation and establishing Faringdon as a Bee-friendly town.

Folly Park is a wet field situated at the eastern edge of Faringdon, below the newly established Cricket ground and Skate Park, southeast of the new Bloor Homes development and next to the fishing pond. A natural spring in the area combined with clay-rich soil deposited on the lower field have transformed it into something more akin to a wet marsh rather than its classification as wildflower meadow. Many residents, visited it for the first time as the venue of the Faringdon Festival 2012 when the green field of reeds was transformed into a ‘therapeutic’ mud bath. Maybe without the glamour or fame of Glastonbury but no less muddy than any well-trampled festival site.

The classification of Wildflower Meadow was attributed by the Council during a previous review of the area, thanks to the presence of some flowers and its unsuitability to be built upon. No work has undergone to establish wildflowers in the meadow, until now. The Project aims to establish a habitat for pollinators and amphibians; protect bio-diversity and provide a managed site for science projects; enhance the area for the enjoyment of the community and at the same time provide an aesthetically pleasing sight for motorists approaching the town from the A420. The Project is being developed with the advice of Wildflower Management expert James Gillies and with the collaboration of the Vale of the White Horse Council official for parks Ian Matten.

The first step in creating a wildflower meadow involved seeding Cotswold's natural flowers varieties that thrive on wet clay soil. Funds were raised and the work was completed in the Autumn.

Wildlife experts tell us that bees are in decline. But what’s so special about bees? And why are bees important?

We should worry about pollinators decline because wild bees are essential to bio diversity and as it happens, to the economy. Some 250,000 species of flowering plants and about three quarters of the eighty major worldwide crops depend on insects like bees for pollination. In a nutshell, they ‘work like bees’ to pollinate plants and crops. Pollinators travel for miles from flower to flower, foraging to make honey and pollinating plants as they go, making nature work. Without bees many fruits and vegetables would become scarce and prohibitively expensive or not be available at all. What's more, bees pollinate flowers and plants that support other life forms plants are at the base of food chains and they also provide shelter and habitat for many creatures. Bio diversity relies on plants - many of which in turn rely on bees.

Recreating just one lost natural habitat is important in the current climate, when the economy needs all the help we can give it.

Bees have lost the wildflowers that they need to feed on. Not because they have been careless but because 97% of wildflower meadows in the UK have disappeared. This is not difficult to see when we look at the intensification of agriculture, the ripping up of hedgerows, the expansion of cities, generally human activities.

Simply building a bee-house and planting the right flowers will make real difference.

Maybe this will be the beginning of a pollinators highway through our town.
