Faringdon Bell Ringers October 5th was a special day for Faringdon ringers. Megan Phillips, who has rung with us since she was a little girl, married Tyler Miller. It’s customary for wedding ringers to have their palms crossed with silver but Megan being one of us we obviously didn’t charge. However her brother arrived in the belfry bearing bottles of champagne and glasses.

Thank you, very much appreciated !

Our longest serving ringer, Norman Leslie, has been poorly recently and we were thrilled that he managed to climb the tower again to ring for Megan. Maybe the champagne helped !

The Vale ringers held their Christmas dinner at Fernham.

Dates have been slipping each year and I think this was last year’s late, not this year’s early, but the Woodman did us proud and everyone enjoyed the evening. Thanks to Lucy Laird who organised it.

This month’s joint ringing practice was at Buckland where the entrance to the belfry is most unusual – from a gallery high above the heads of the congregation. There was some good ringing and I hope the residents of Buckland enjoyed it.

The House On Half Moon Street

Mysterious autumn is my most favourite season. That hinterland between the glory of summer and the depths of deep midwinter. A season of change, and revelation. I’ve written several poems and my past books about the mysteries of November, for that seems to me to be the height of the mystery – where anything is possible.

When we lived in London, we took particular joy in following trails in a wonderful old book of ‘ghost tours’ of the capital, which plunged us into the historic heart of it. Many a night saw us on a twilight trail amongst the Inns of Court, Green Park and the ancient churches of the City of London. And we’d always end up in a pub, which was a major incentive.

Such geeky endeavours led us to also join The Sherlock Holmes Society of London for a while. As mentioned in previous articles I have always been obsessed with the Holmes canon, and torn firmly in half between my loyalties to Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett. The derring-do of the former, and the quicksilver danger of the latter are the reasons that that they will both forever remain my joint favourites, if such a question is asked (and it is, more often than you would think).

The reason for such historic procrastination is the wonder at which this month’s book captures the atmosphere of darkest Victoriana, with a mystery at its heart.

The House on Half Moon Street takes us into the world of Leo Stanhope, a hero with a difference. Leo is assistant to a pathologist at a great London hospital and to all intents and purposes an upstanding gentleman about town. But Leo was born Charlotte, a secret which gnaws at his heart, as he finds his only comfort with a ‘lady of the night.’

Potty training can be a bit of a minefield at the beginning, so I thought I would share a few little tips for those of you who are thinking of starting potty training soon.… ● Put a piece of kitchen roll in your child’s nappy, this will help them to feel when they have done a wee and start to not like the sensation, and will encourage them to tell you they need a wee. ● It is definitely a good idea to use kitchen roll if you are using ‘Pull Ups’ as they still hold a few wees, and your child will not feel wet if they wee in them. ● Put some pants/knickers on top of their nappy, so they get used to seeing them every day, and learn how to pull them up/down before you start properly. ● Get some pants with characters they like, such as Peppa Pig, Fireman Sam, Paw Patrol, that will encourage them to be excited about their pants! ● When you start potty training, increase their fluid intake for a few days, so they are likely to need a wee more often. ● Have lots of potties dotted around, and if you can, hide one behind your sofa, or behind a door..... these are the places your child will go to have a sneaky poo! ● Personalise their potty with them, get some stickers and letters so you can write their name on it. ● Take them to the toilet with you (we don’t usually get a choice about this anyway!!) and let them watch you, so it becomes more ‘normal’.

Don’t forget, this is a process and will not happen overnight!

Roberts Reflections!

Welcome to my November rambles, on all things that catch my eye and have some connection with harvest time.

Over our sheep grazing, there’s been a sudden appearance of many grey and custard-yellow coloured slime moulds, primitive organisms, creeping collective structures that individually share some similarities with both fungi and single-celled amoeba-like animals. They do not harm grass or livestock, when they spread out to search for nutrients and to form spores. They can disappear as quickly as they have formed, typically in Autumn and under recent heavy rain. I find it fascinating – I wish that it wasn’t raining so much that I could set up time-lapse photography.

The blackberries soon went overripe, as I observed early rot in the dropped hedgerow crab apples, almost as if they were more sweet than acidic this year. Excellent treats for the sheep! Hawthorn berries have also done well, waiting for the Scandinavian winter thrushes that I’ve already seen back in the UK. There’s a farming headline angle this month, after our harvest festivals, with some harvesting still going on as I write.

“Family Farms Under Threat Under Extinction” farmers are increasingly looking at their farms as a business and are proactively looking at how they can generate an income from diversified sources to remain profitable.

Farms generally survive on low margins. Costs of production rise, margins fall and farms have only a limited capacity to absorb such costs in times of economic uncertainty. Costs then get passed on to manufacturers and then on to consumers like us whether in farm shop, markets or shops.

Tariffs will rise and food and cars at least will cost more when exported. It’s going to be more crucial now than ever for farmers to develop their skills and improve their business confidence to survive. If they do not, the risk of extinction for the family farm is very real; farmers must act now to both strengthen their core farming business and to spread the risk.

And what skills they possess !

And there again, another Farming News headline is this one: “I bought a farm” with Jeremy Clarkson filming for his own show on a well-known provider’s online service. Jeremy Clarkson has commented, “Good news! I can finally confirm that I’m going to be spending the next year, in the rain, making a show about farming… Of course to be a farmer you have to be an agronomist, a businessman, a politician, an accountant, a vet, and a mechanic. And I’m… none of those things. I don’t even know what agronomist means.” An Agronomy is a term used to describe the science surrounding the growing of crops. An agronomist must develop and implement production systems, to ensure farms are able to achieve maximum production levels without causing any damage to the environment.

There is also an increasing desire of farmers to achieve carbon-neutral status. Meetings run by the Agricultural Horticultural Development Board at the Malmesbury Monitor Farm will be very pertinent: The four winter meetings at Malmesbury Monitor Farm, from 4th November to 2nd March, are about soil physics, chemistry and biology, profitable rotations, zero-carbon and technology farming.

One farm in Lincolnshire is feeding bio-charcoal to the milking cows, as covered by EC Regulations – I’ll expand on that another month! So, all this knowledge, skill and decision making in a year’s work, year upon year - farmers really do deserve our respect!

Wine Made Easy!

Italian Wines

Having wandered around the wines of Australia last month, I have picked Italy for this months wines. This is one of the countries in the Mediterranean where wine growing took off.

The Greeks first introduced grape vines and the wonderful growing climate in most areas of Italy did the rest.

Each region has its own local specialities and most can also provide the classics of Merlot, Shiraz etc.

The two wines that most people know are Chianti and Pinot Grigio, with of course Prosecco for the fizz. Chianti is mostly produced in Tuscany and there are five varieties to be found, though only two usually make it to the UK supermarkets.

Standard Chianti and Chianti Classico are the regular wines with the Classico being the more expensive and tastier wine.

The main flavours are of red cherry with herbs and spices, plus well balanced tannin and acidity. There are a few small areas in Tuscany that produce extremely expensive wines like Brunello di Montalcino which occasionally pops up on the shelf.

On the other side of Italy, you get the red of Monteplciano D’Abruzo which is a nice easy drinking red with more tannin and less acidity than Chianti. This goes well with most red meats.

Still with the reds, in the North West you get Barollo, which is usually over £10 per bottle, but its neighbour Bardolino is better value and still a lovely wine.

Popping over to the North East of Italy is where you find most of the Pinot Grigio. This is a wine that can sometimes be a little bland, with light flavours of citrus fruits and peaches, though on other occasions, you get something more like the Sauvignon Blanc fruitiness. The thing to look for is on the label round the neck where for the tastier wines you will find a DOC or even better a DOCG mark. Wines that have these classifications re deemed by the local wine trade to be of a better quality.

Another lovely white is Soave and Soave Classico, which are again light on flavours, but very enjoyable with fish or white meats.

We don’t usually see wines from the central regions around Naples on our shelves, but lately I have seen a number of wines from Puglia on the South East (or heel) of Italy. These wines are very dark red and have a thickness in the mouth.

Often quite earthy and lots of tannin with some black cherry flavours. The grape is Primitivo and this is usually found on the label. These probably fall into the camp of you either like it or not.

Sicily also produces a wide variety of wines and many are versions of the other wines of Italy, the grapes seem to grow well in the climate and soils so you usually get a good wine here.

In our local supermarkets, you can get store tabled wines and with the Tesco versions, I have yet again found a lovely Chianti Classico and also Recchia Bardolino in Waitrose.

Why You Don’t Need a Diet to Lose Weight Do you invest a lot of time trying to find the right diet for you? Well maybe it doesn’t matter which diet you choose because the majority of people will not stick to any diet for long enough to make long term gains.

Sticking to any eating plan is probably more important than which one you choose.

It is so difficult to lose weight or get fit without creating healthy habits which you will be able to stick to.

It’s not about will power or discipline but more about creating new habits! Old habits can be undone and new habits formed.

Just take a moment to think about one or two of your current habits: ● Brushing your teeth ● Making a cup of tea or coffee before going to work ● Pouring yourself a glass of wine when cooking I’m sure you can think of some more of your own!

Habits form in response to an initial cue or trigger, such as boredom. Over time the response creates a routine, so when you’re bored you go to the fridge without even realising you’re doing it.

The outcome is a reward (or why would we do it?), in this case the satisfaction of eating something you enjoy.

However, if we can change our response to the trigger whilst still having a reward at the end we can start changing an old habit into a new habit.

For example: 1. Trigger - it’s 3pm, I’m tired and I feel hungry 2. Response - I take a walk to the children’s biscuit tin and take a few out 3. Outcome - I feel more energised (possibly!!!)

New approach: 4. Trigger - it’s 3pm, I’m tired and I feel hungry Are you sure you are hungry? Are you really tired or are you bored and need a break from your work?

5. Response - I will try a new routine! I will go for a 5 minute walk (into another office, or a walk around the block) (You’ve changed your response. Now we are changing things!)

6. Outcome I definitely feel more energised If eating the wrong foods is a habit then eating the right foods can be too!

Many bad habits start with boredom.

We crave stimulation - we can get it by eating the biscuits.

Instead we could go for a walk or eat something nice but a bit healthier (maybe a piece of fruit or quality chocolate). We are starting to make changes and hopefully starting to realise why we do the things that we do. ● New habits start with awareness ● Notice when you’re bored rather than hungry ● New behaviour can still lead to satisfaction You don’t need a diet to lose weight you need a new habit! ● Focus on building healthy habits ● Change your food, change your body ● Control your food, control your success Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004

Steve Sheppard At the age of 66, Steve Sheppard is about to have his debut novel, A Very Important Teapot, published…

Steve Sheppard was born in Guildford, the youngest by some distance of three brothers, and spent his formative years in the heart of the Surrey stockbroker belt, where he played a lot of sport (poorly), met a lot of people (friendly) and had a lot of jobs (of varying degrees of noteworthiness). He also appeared on stage in a number of amateur productions, whether anyone wanted him to or not. Disappointed at failing to meet any actual stockbrokers, he moved to West Oxfordshire over twenty years ago, where he now lives in the quintessentially quirky English village of Bampton with his wife, son and the latest in a series of recalcitrant cats.

A Very Important Teapot is his first novel. The title came to him a quarter of a century ago but he did very little with it until early 2017 when, flying home from Australia, Steve decided that he would probably never find a better time to write the book he’d been thinking about, on and off, through all of life’s normal and abnormal travails. So he did.

If you don’t drink enough you will become dehydrated. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to drink because by this stage you will already be dehydrated.

The amount of water that we drink also plays an important part in how easily we poo. Stool consistency is reliant on fluid and fibre intake. It comes in different shapes, sizes, colour and smells, a stool should be passed easily and with minimal strain, it should be soft to firm in texture, passing a stool should not be painful, a healthy stool varies from person to person but we should keep an eye on any changes and seek medical advice if concerned, you should take no longer than 10-15 minutes to empty your bowel, exercise is good for getting muscles working and moving everything along.

Don’t get hung up on how often you go for a ‘number 2’, this can vary from 3 times a day to 3 times a week (according to a study published in Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology which found 98% of people fit this criteria).

The recommended daily allowance of fibre is 30g a day but in the UK most of us only eat 18g so still some way to go. Fibre is good for appetite control as it makes us feel fuller for longer.

Fibre is a carbohydrate, yep, it’s a plant-based carb! But unlike sugary or starchy carbs it is not absorbed but just passes through our digestive system.

Fibre acts like a broom and keeps the intestines clean and also swells up and absorbs water promoting regular bowel movements and softer, bulker stools. Fibre also slows down the absorption of carbs so may help manage blood sugars and lower cholesterol. It is also thought that a high fibre diet can protect us against bowel cancer. I operate as a mobile therapist which means I will come to you for massage therapies, such as hand/arm massage, foot/leg massage – therefore no need to undress either making it a more relaxing experience for anyone concerned about this. The science bit!

Did you know that we have seven senses (not just the five we usually learn about)? In addition to the usual five, touch, sight, smell, hearing and taste we also have the vestibular system and proprioceptive awareness. Proprioceptive awareness is knowing where your body is in relation to your environment and head. This may sound strange but for babies, people with special needs and disabilities, sufferers of strokes and dementia or neurological conditions such as MS this is either underdeveloped or the connections (synapses) in the brain have changes as a result of illness/disease meaning the sensory awareness is not strong.

Underdeveloped or damaged proprioceptive awareness can cause person to have regular slips, trips and falls and difficulty with orientation (this is one reason why toddlers are often falling over).

Myelination is the process during which a white, fatty substance called the myelin sheath forms an electrically insulating layer over the nerve fibres, over and between the neurons and synapses (connectors) within the brain which are responsible for transmitting electrical signals throughout the body via the central nervous system.

Massage helps the process of myelination because massage greatly improves circulation around the body. In turn this helps fatty acids to move around and create more myelin where required. Indirectly, regular massage can help to develop or reawaken sensory receptors which results in better proprioceptive awareness. Massage is therefore suitable for every-body but especially those I specialise in, Skin to skin contact creates the release of oxytocin and serotonin (the happy hormones) which create feelings of calm and relaxation and can support the bonding journey between parents and babies. Many more benefits of baby massage will be discussed on my introduction to baby massage on 8th January 2020 and the 4-week baby massage workshop starting on 15th January.
