A MEDIEVAL WORLD IN LONGTHORPE Longthorpe Tower opens reopened its doors to the general public and as one of Britain’s most important historic sites, it’s a must visit for residents and visitors alike. The Tower is a surviving part of a 14th century fortified Manor House and contains the finest set of medieval wall paintings in a domestic setting anywhere in Western Europe, which give a rare insight into the medieval mind. The Tower was part of a manor house owned by the Thorpe family, who went from peasants to knights in three generations. The Tower was added as a status symbol to show that they had ‘made it’ socially in about 1300.

ORMISTON BUSHFIELD ACADEMY Ormiston Bushfield Academy’s (OBA) brand new building is currently under construction at Orton Centre, Peterborough. The £20.6 million project is set to be completed in July this year and includes a 524 sqm library, a purpose built dance and drama studio, a television studio, and an all-weather football pitch – all of which will be available for the wider community as well as pupils.

Carriages Restaurant The City Centres Best Kept Secret

A new exhibition space has been added at the top of the building which includes a hands-on display telling the story of the Tower, the people that built it and explains about life in a medieval manor house. Academy Student Sam Ladds (17) is keeping track of progress as construction continues... Last month I told you that important discussions were in there final stages surrounding the technology that will be made available to the students of the new Academy building in September. Now, with less than 50 days to go until the official handover, we can reveal this information in its full glory... Talks with IT suppliers, GAIA, concluded that every room will either have a dual touch interactive smart-board or a 65 inch LED TV. This will be supplemented with an Apple TV to enable iPads to be shown on-screen or to stream films. Although some departments will continue to use laptops, ultimately the Academy would like to see these being replaced by iPads as we develop. And there’s more... The ICT and Media rooms will be equipped with iMacs to house the latest software - 101 of them! All of this equipment will be incorporated into the Academy’s teaching environment and will offer students a level of interactive learning they have never seen before. Very exciting stuff!

Peterborough Community Foundation’s first wave of match funding was launched earlier this year with the support of Secret Millionaire, Mike Greene. Mike has said that in total he wants to help 100 local groups by building a match fund of up to £100,000. In order to support a greater number of Peterborough charities the second round of match funding will match up to £1,000 of sponsorship and donations per organisation. However, for charities and voluntary groups to benefit they must register to create their own profile page on localgiving.com. NENE GLIDES OFFERING FUN AT FERRY MEADOWS ON THE LATEST CRAZE CALLED SEGWAY!

WIN

As a magazine, we are always on the lookout for new and exciting things to write about, so when John Rayment, the owner of Nene Glides, asked me to come along and try out the new Segway, I jumped at the chance. A Segway is a battery powered transporter and you use your weight distribution to guide it, forward to move forward and backwards to slow down, stop and reverse. Easing the handlebar left or right will move you left or right..... Simple!

This is a unique opportunity to do something completely different!

Nene Glides has 5 Segway transporters, so it is absolutely perfect for friends and families to have fun and enjoy the experience together. All sessions are accompanied by instructor, John, full training and tuition is given before you go out – which honestly takes minutes for you to pick up. I had two 70 year old gentlemen with me when I went, and they both picked up the technique within about 5 minutes of standing on it.

Olympic Training Olympics around the corner, so lets take a little peak into why the athletes across all disciplines, will be ensuring ‘strength training’ is part of their routine. Olympics around the corner, so lets take a little peak into why the athletes across all disciplines, will be ensuring ‘strength training’ is part of their routine. Just a short time ago, most people thought that strength training would cause you to become muscle-bound and would be counterproductive to good chosen sport, be that running, cycling, rowing etc. Strength builds the foundation for ALL other athletic qualities. This is due to the fact that all aspects of a proper technique require high levels of muscular strength. Strength training is a vital part of complete conditioning. The primary function of the body’s 600+ muscles is to contract (shorten in length) to move body parts (remember that only muscle can cause movement). The stronger the muscles and the more forceful the contractions, the faster the athlete will run, higher he will jump, further he will throw/kick, and harder he will hit. An added bonus of strength training is injury prevention. Athletes who strength train, tend to have fewer injuries. This is because strength training strengthens the muscle attachments and increases density of bones at the sites of muscle origins and insertions. And if an injury does occur to an athlete who has been strength training properly, it will probably not be as serious and will tend to heal faster. So next time someone tells you weight training is just for bodybuilders, think again.

1. Cool down – End your session with 5-10 minutes of low intensity exercise. Limit the stress on joints and tendons. This cool down helps to flush out the by-products of the exercise session, such as lactic acid, and helps reduce how sore you feel the next day! 2. Fluid intake – Drink water during exercise but also after, to continue the rehydration process. Consider added electrolytes, if larger quantities of fluids are required, such as in warmer climes. 3. Protein and Carbs for repair – Try to eat a protein rich snack, with some carbs, within 30 minutes of exercising. Again this helps with repair and recovery. Sports nutrition snacks are convenient, but cottage cheese, tuna, chicken, egg whites all fit the protein bill. www.fitness2health.co.uk Facebook: Mark FitnessTrainer Get on two wheels with our voucher giveaway with Cycle Wright, based at Waterside Garden Centre in Baston.

Have you ever felt that food gets stuck in your throat when eating, or have you or someone you know been suffering from heartburn or indigestion on and off for three weeks or more? If you notice any of these symptoms, tell your doctor straight away. The chances are that it’s nothing serious but it’s always best to get it checked out as soon as you can.

Remember – you are not wasting anyone’s time by getting your symptoms checked out, so make that trip to your doctor’s surgery. If it’s nothing to worry about, your mind will be put at rest. But if it is cancer of the stomach or oesophagus, early detection makes it easier to treat.

These symptoms could be signs of stomach or oesophagus cancer. The oesophagus is the long tube (gullet) that carries food from the throat to the stomach.

Seeing your doctor without delay may save your life.

There are almost 700 new cases of these two cancers in Anglia every year and they cause over 500 deaths annually in the region. Both cancers affect men and women, but are more common in men. More than nine out of 10 people who get cancer of the stomach or oesophagus are over 55.

Remember to see your doctor straight away if: • Food ever feels like it’s sticking in your throat when you swallow, or • You’ve had heartburn or indigestion on and off for 3 weeks or more

The East of England Show has announced this year’s dates and a packed calendar of new and exciting attractions for the region on July 6,7 and 8. An outdoor evening concert, Friday’s Ladies Day, a brand new ‘green’ business hub, shopping village, a programme of interactive children’s events, food court and of course over 1,000 animals on show will make this year’s event unmissable. In addition to this, family fun is a top priority on all three days with a multitude of interactive events lined up. www.eastofenglandshow.co.uk

This year’s programme includes: • Live period music • Falconry displays • Spectacular battle displays by the re-enactors. You can watch Vikings in battle, hear the crash of musket fire from the Civil War soldiers and get involved as the Medieval Knights used children from the audience in their tournament! www.vivacity-peterborough.com

RAISING THE ROOF

Our eyes met at the traffic lights. I wasn’t at my best; hair unkempt, sunglasses askew, a gaily-coloured knitted scarf - a present from Granny - tied tight around my neck. But I was in an open-top Audi TT convertible and we’ve all seen enough TV car commercials to know how the story goes

Ryan’s Football Preview - EURO 2012 Email me your thoughts to: ryan@semplesoccer.co.uk and visit: www.semple-soccer.co.uk where I will post all my responses.

This month I have decided to look at, (and predict the outcome) of the group stages in the UEFA European Championships. There promises to be some great games, I for one can’t wait. Enjoy. GROUP A Czech Republic Greece Poland Russia

GROUP B Denmark Germany Netherlands Portugal

GROUP C Croatia Italy Republic Of Ireland Spain

GROUP D England France Sweden Ukraine

A tough group to call as all four teams will fancy their chances. The Czech’s have a strong history in this competition and have some top players to call upon, Gk Petr Cech and Tomas Rosicky to name two while Russia will hope they can have a tournament like four years ago only losing in the semis to Spain. The host nation Poland will certainly rely on the crowd being their twelfth man and Greece know all about turning the bookies upside down after shocking the world to win Euro 2004. Prediction - Czech and Russia.

Definitely the competitions ‘group of death’. All four nations would be highly backed to qualify in any other group but with the way the draw turned out, two sets of players will be gone before the tournament reaches the ko phase. I believe Germany are one of the most exciting teams around with their young side playing fast, free flowing football and in Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder et al the Dutch will be as strong as when they were runners up at WC 2010. This leads me to believe the well qualified Danes and the genius Cristiano Ronaldo lead Portuguese will be heading home early. Prediction - Germany and Netherlands.

Another tough group. Here we have the last two World Cup Winners and also the current European Champions in Italy and Spain. Having said that Croatia always upset the apple cart at major tournaments and in the Republic Of Ireland we have a side that are extremely hard to beat and a set of fans that will turn whichever match they play into a virtual home game for their players. With all this in mind, (and a little biased thinking!) I believe there will be a shock on the cards here. Prediction- Spain and ROI.

With the shambles that was England at WC 2010 added with the long winded resignation of Fabio Capello, the is he, isn’t he Harry Redknapp saga and then the final appointment of Roy Hodgson weeks before the tournament begins, preparation hasn’t exactly been smooth. Also added to the fact France have been reinvigorated under Laurent Blanc, Sweden have often been a bogey side down the years and Ukraine are joint hosts, expectations are pretty low for once, (did I mention Wayne Rooney is missing for our first two games). It’s is for these reasons I actually think we may just do ok. No player will feel too much pressure and they may just surprise a few people, I really hope so anyway. Prediction - England and France well I have to be patriotic!
