APPLE DAY It may still be Summer, but Stamford Community Orchard Group are already planning for this year’s Stamford Apple Day, to be held at Stamford Arts Centre on the 6 October 2012. Stamford hosts one of the country’s largest Apple Day events, attracting over a thousand visitors on the day. This year is set to be bigger and better than ever! As always, the East of England Apples and Orchards Project will be bringing along many different varieties English apple, and their experts will be onhand to identify the apples that people bring along on the day - hoping to find some of the long-lost Stamford apple varieties. SCOG’s own gurus will be dispensing invaluable advice to people on how to sort out problems and look after the apple trees in their gardens. As well as the apple identification there will be a tombola and lots of stalls selling apple related gifts and produce, including food from New College Stamford; Watch group, Bourne Wildlife group, Lyveden New Bield and Country Markets; Beekeeping and Honey; cider from Jollydale Cyder and many more. There will also be fun and games such as pin the maggot on the apple and apple bobbing, for children big & small.

Rotary Diamond Jubilee Tree Planting at Deeping St James County Primary School The Rotary Club of the Deepings sponsored an Avenue of Trees to celebrate the Queen`s Diamond Jubilee. These were planted in November by Pupils, Parents and Teachers along with the Gardening Club of the Deeping St James County Primary School and the Rotary Club of the Deepings. The planting on the School playing field was a fun community partnership which was really enjoyed by all who took part. The trees now in full leaf will be a lasting memory for the Queens Diamond Jubilee and also for the School and Pupils Before leaving the Rotarians were shown around the path of the school garden, which was an interesting woody area, with log seats, wild flowers , a pond and a growing area for vegetables etc. A great asset for the pupils of the gardening club.

SCOG is a Registered Charity (No.1115719) based in the Lincolnshire market town of Stamford. Its aim is to preserve the old orchards that still exist in the town, to establish new orchards and to rediscover old apple varieties. The Group has already planted and managed a Community Orchard in the town and has an exciting new site on Uffington Road where they are busy planting different varieties of fruit trees. info@scog-web.org.uk www.scog-web.org.uk

NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT FOR THE JOHN EVE FIELD, MARKET DEEPING Market Deeping Town Council is having four exciting pieces of equipment installed on their John Eve Field playground from mid September 2012. The Town Council has secured £15,000 from monies paid to South Kesteven District Council by Persimmon Homes as a result of building Phase 1 of their development off Godsey Lane in Market Deeping. In addition, the Town Council resolved to add just under £20,000 from its General Reserves to purchase all of the new equipment. In 2009 the Town Council refurbished the playground and BMX track on John Eve Field and Glebe Park, to provide new and modern facilities for children of different ages, after lengthy consultation with the children in and around the town. However, at the time the Town Council could not secure funds to provide all of the ‘wish list’ that had been compiled during the consultations. But thanks to the monies from Persimmon Homes and the Town Council’s reserves, the park will now see the final pieces installed to complete the area. Wicksteed Playscapes are again the providers and installers of the equipment, which will be a basketball and football goal end, a hurricane swing, a cableway (zip wire), and a new style of roundabout.

Sir David Jason pledges support for National Air Ambulance Week 24-30 September 2012 One of Britain’s most famous and respected actors Sir David Jason is getting behind the first united National Air Ambulance Week. Sir David has come a long way from his days as an electrician; since then he has won many prestigious awards for his work, with roles greatly varying from the comical Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, to the more serious role of Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost. Sir David became interested in flying when he was young and has a keen interest in space exploration and all things aeronautical. He started out his own flying experience in gliders and then progressed to helicopters. Because of this keen interest Sir David became involved with the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) and in March 2009 was asked, and agreed, to lend his support to the work of air ambulance charities by becoming Patron of AAA. The heart of the week long appeal will be very much encouraging the communities and businesses across the country to support their local air ambulance charity. By doing so it will make a huge difference and effectively help to save lives in the community that you live in. Every penny really goes a long way in helping save lives. www.aoaa.org.uk/naaw

LOCAL HOME OF MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS WINS HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND GRANT One of the area’s most important historic sites will enjoy a new lease of life following the announcement of a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Torpel Manor Field, situated in Bainton Parish, was home to a medieval manor house and deer park. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund it will now be home to a new interpretation centre and permanent exhibition. In addition, the grant will fund a new archaeological research project designed to find out more about the history of the site, its previous occupants and its significance in the regional landscape. Torpel Manor was originally the home of Roger de Torpel, one of William the Conqueror’s knights and subsequently the home to generations of knights. It was the home of the De Torpel family, forming one of the original feudal estates of Peterborough Abbey with an obligation to provide six knights to the Abby in return for the title to the land.

The family

fought in many of the campaigns and civil wars of the early Medieval period. The manor formed part of a larger estate and deer park and was later owned at various times by Eleanor of Navarre, mother of the Black Prince and by King Henry VIII. Purchased by the Langdyke Countryside Trust in 2009, this new project aims to enhance the heritage and wildlife value of the site for the benefit of local people. It will focus on creating a deeper understanding of the history of the manor house and deer park and capturing this in a permanent exhibition, housed in the new interpretation centre, and in an online education pack for use by visiting schools.

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY Hi Beauties For those of you that are parents – you maybe sighing in relief, because the kids are finally back to school! Just as you’ve managed to juggle working, days out, play-dates and household chores its now time to get back to the manic school run. This usually means more time being spent on operation ‘get the kids to school’ than spending time on yourself, until now… I have the top four tips to transfer you from Mummy to ‘Yummy Mummy’ in 15 minutes flat.

1.

Quick fixes for ‘back to school’ beauty…… 1. Hair There’s nothing worse than waking up and seeing that your hair looks like a birds nest. But don’t fret – a quick brush and a messy bun is always a quick option and can take less than five minutes. Alternatively if your blessed with hair that doesn’t end up looking like a scarecrow when you wake, just give it a quick squirt with dry hair shampoo, brush and be on your way. It really isn’t necessary to wash your hair everyday; the longer you leave it the more the oils can nourish the hair.

2.

2. Simple Skincare I personally can’t feel fresh until I’ve cleansed, toned and moisturised and seeing as this takes only a couple of minutes, there’s no excuse to not take care of your skin and get rid of any make-up from the previous day.

3.

3. Make-up It’s not a must to have a full face of make-up for the school run or even for work, just think simple. I recommend applying BB cream all over the face, which not only evens skin tone but makes your skin glow, followed by blusher, mascara and a quick slick of lip gloss. This all takes less than five minutes and will make you feel made up without having to spend too much time.

4. Eyelashes/Tan Eyelashes and a tanned face make it look like you’ve had time to spend on your make-up even if you have none on. Why not try eyelash extensions so when you wake you can just do your skincare routine and you’re good to go. Tanning your face means you’re less likely to need foundation, meaning another make-up application you can save time on by not doing…

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

AROMATHERAPY Aromatherapy is derived from two words: Aroma - meaning fragrance or smell; and Therapy - meaning treatment. Aromatherapy combines the physical and emotional effects of gentle massage with the medical and psychotherapeutic properties of the essential oils derived from plants. Aromatherapy was used by most ancient civilizations and is reputed to be at least 6000 years old. It is widely thought that Aromatherapy began in Egypt, although there is evidence that is was used by the Greeks, Romans, Indians, Chinese and the North American Indians. A qualified Aromatherapist will carefully blend a number of essential oils chosen just for you to give you the maximum benefit of the healing properties of the oils. Digestive problems can be eased with the use of essential oils such as Peppermint, Fennel, and Ginger. Female reproductive and hormonal problems can respond well to Rose, Clary Sage and Vetiver amongst others. Depression and anxiety can be improved with oils such as Lavender, Jasmine and Chamomile.

20

Aromatherapy has also been shown to be affective for: • Migraine and headaches • Back pain • Sleep disorders • Muscular tension • Respiratory problems • Hormonal imbalances • Stress-related conditions • Improving immune response • Improving circulation & reducing blood pressure The gentle massage movements and use of pressure points allow the oils to enter the body and circulatory system through the skin as well as entering the brain and nervous system directly through the nasal passages. The relaxing and therapeutic effects of the oils are felt almost immediately. A full consultation with your Aromatherapist before treatment will ensure that all precautions are taken and will enable you to ask any questions you may have. YOUR EMOTIONAL STRESS LEVELS CAN AFFECT YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE: With the olympics coming to London in the summer of 2012, many people are turning their attention to sports of all kinds. We must remember that when we see all those athletes going for the gold medal, there is so much going on behind the scenes that has propelled that athlete to their current peak position. Years of dedication, motivation & commitment to physical training to hone their skills to where they are today, but it’s not just all about the physical body! About your blood pressure reading: A required amount of pressure is needed to keep pumping the blood around your body. The pressure is highest as the heart pumps blood into arteries and at it’s lowest when the heart is resting in-between beats. 120/80 Our B.P. is actually measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is written as two numbers e.g.: 120/80mmHg. This is normally said as “120 over 80” The first number is the Systolic pressure – the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats & forces blood around the body, the second number is the Diastolic pressure. This is the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting in between beats. A ‘normal’ B.P. reading is under 120/80mmHg & high B.P. is defined as a reading of 140/90 or higher over a period of several weeks: - you must remember that many things can affect your B.P. reading, so one high reading does not necessarily mean high B.P. Factors affecting blood pressure: There are many physical, emotional & lifestyle factors which affect B.P., most common factors are: • The health of your heart, arteries & kidneys • Your emotional ‘stress’ levels • How much salt you eat • How much exercise you do

• How much alcohol you drink • How overweight you are High BP accounts for 20-25% of all deaths worldwide & affects approximately one-in-three people worldwide. That’s 16 Million people in the UK; unfortunately in 90% of cases of high BP (the ‘Primary’ or ‘Essential’ Hypertension cases) doctors are unable to find a physical cause & that’s where I may be of help; there are so many lifestyle/emotional factors that many doctors unfortunately simply don’t have the appointment time/resources needed to treat these combination factors for each patient. We can address the emotional ‘X-Factors’ that create Hypertension, also we can look at, how much exercise you do or don’t do & why? How much alcohol you drink & why? How overweight you are & why? We will look at the ‘emotional drivers’ that make you do the things you shouldn’t do & not the things you must do!! Even if you only manage a reduction of 2.5/1.4mm/hg, it would still slash the risk of dying from a stroke by 12-14% & heart disease by 9-10%!!! Books for school Whether you have one, two....or even five children to buy books for, the costs can quickly start to grow. Primary and Junior age children enjoy reference books, aimed at their age groups, which are more pictorially focussed. In Secondary school, researching topics becomes an almost weekly task. And if your children are heading off to college or University, then the good old ‘recommended book list’ can leave you watching the pennies and pounds disappear fast! Whilst many parents enjoy investing in their children’s futures and education, it needn’t be at the expense of the family budget. Website

Libraries

Your local library can source a book for you, through its network. Visit the library with your topic details or reading list for help in finding books which work for you.

Downloads

Books needn’t be purchased as a paper copy anymore. If a download is useful, many e-readers and mobile phones have links directly to popular online bookstores.

Swap

Get together with other parents and friends to swap books and ideas.

Car Boot / Charity Shops

You may well strike lucky and find the book you are after at a car boot sale or in a charity shop. If you are looking for further reading, outside of the recommended list, then this could be the place for you!

Advertise

At Uni or college, advertise the books that you want to buy...everyone else is advertising what they want to sell, so they’ll come to you!

Mix baking soda and water together to form a paste. Scrub inside and rinse and dry well. Alternatively, sprinkle in dry baking soda. Leave it overnight to absorb any lingering odours. HOME & GARDEN

Garden Scene By Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

The first days of autumn and subtle rustic tints start appearing amongst now tired foliage. That gentle, calm, winding down feeling replaces the bustle that was summer, I love this time of year.

JOBS FOR THE MONTH Kitchen Garden • Lift and store main crop potatoes to avoid damage from slugs. • Pick apples as they ripen, extras can be stored in boxes or on shelves in a cool room or shed out of the sunlight, never store damaged or bruised fruit. Leave a gap between each apple, and check regularly for rot. • Prepare a bed for autumn planted garlic and over wintering onions.

Olympic Fever Following on from the huge success of the London Olympics and the resulting feel-good factor, you may be wondering what to do with your time, or perhaps you have got the bug to participate in a few of the events that you watched live or on your TV. Local travel company Inspirational Travel has come up with a few ideas for unique activity based holidays that will offer you the chance to “thrillax” and continue the Olympic buzz!

Canoeing in Zambia It’s not all about white-water rapids, which can have you clinging on for dear life. No sir, there’s also the serene but spectacular Lower Zambezi where you can glide past the residing hippos and elephants at a more relaxed pace but still enjoy a truly enthralling experience. Exclusive camps like Chiawa & Old Mondoro are situated right on the river bank and provide the perfect base from which to paddle your canoe and enjoy crocodile-like views of the best birdlife and wildlife that inhabit the area. Horse Riding in South Africa Forget the top-hats and show jumping, deep within the Limpopo Province are the luxury lodges of Ant’s Hill & Ant’s Nest where you can happily gallop amongst the game, which gets so close the memories will remain etched in your mind. Canter along open sandy tracks, or traverse high ridges with spectacular vistas, the pace can be as fast or relaxed as the

rider likes, and with its being suitable for all ages, who’s stopping you going? Sailing in Grenada, The Caribbean Known for its year-round Regattas, Grenada’s sailing scene is for all ages and all experiences. One of the most distinguished yachting events is the Annual Grenada Sailing Festival, which is an integral part of the Annual Caribbean racing calendar that’s held towards the end of January. This event features several days of races and enthusiasm, along with a day-long craft market and street festival. Festivals are what the Grenadians like, and there is bound to a great party going on after a firsttime medal in London this year. Diving in Mozambique Okay so maybe we’re cheating a bit here as we are not talking about high boards (we like to call it “poetic licence”), but the scuba diving in Mozambique should allow us to be forgiven,

as it is has some of the best coastline in the world with many wonderful dive sites off its whopping 1,500 mile-long coastline. At White Pearl Resort, Ponta Mamoli, courses are available for those who are starting out or simply wanting to brush up. From single day introduction courses to a five-day open water course, possibilities in the water are in abundance. Water-based activities don’t stop with diving; it is also possible to swim with Dolphins and witness the majestic sight of Loggerhead & Leatherback Turtles nesting on these shores. Cycling in Morocco You might not be a quick or as fit as Mark Cavendish or Bradley Wiggins but cycling through Morocco’s scenic countryside requires no training, although if you really want to test yourself then the country’s Atlas Mountain range is the place for you. Split into the Middle Atlas, High Atlas and the Little Atlas, each range has its own degree of difficulty; from serious mountain biking through the steppes of the Little Atlas to the winding

roads of the High Atlas, home to the nation’s highest peak, and the Middle Atlas, which is home to Tazekka National Park and the prime place to spot the likes of Barbary Wild Boar, Common Genet and Jackal. If you are after activities that are a little easier why not enjoy some beach volleyball on a pristine beach in The Maldives or maybe play a few games of tennis at a luxury resort in Mauritius? Both destinations are sure to be much warmer than Horse Guards Parade or Wimbledon! In Dubai, Oman or Abu Dhabi you could try your hand at archery or a variety of shooting activities. Whatever your interest, Inspirational Travel can tailor a holiday to suit your needs and budget and provide you with a “gold medal” experience. To get ideas for your next activity break simply call 01780 784380 or email info@inspirational-travel.com.

THE PETERBOROUGH SCHOOL

It’s a really exciting time at The Peterborough School. In August, the Year 13 leavers learnt they had achieved outstanding A Level results; the overall pass rate of 100% means that every student passed every exam taken for the fifth successive year. The number of top grades at A* and A was also up on the previous year at 49%. Headmaster, Adrian Meadows, was thrilled to see so many happy faces on results day and congratulated everyone, saying that their success is testament to their hard work, the love of learning which is instilled at the School and the high standard of teaching throughout. For the students who remain at the School, the excitement has been focused on the completion of the brand new Sports Facility in time for the new academic year. With its state of the art equipment in the Fitness Suite, its ultra-modern Climbing Wall in the main hall and all the new sporting options the Facility brings, students and staff have been eagerly anticipating its opening. This in itself will be a huge event as newly-crowned Olympic champion rower, Katherine Grainger, will be visiting the School at the end of September to formally declare the Facility open, as well as inspiring young rowers by showing off her precious gold medal.

Now is Good, 12A Adapted from the novel Before I Die, this film follows seventeen year old Tessa (played by Dakota Fanning), who is diagnosed with terminal leukaemia and wants to live life to the full before she dies. She makes a list of things a normal teenager would experience, setting out on a mission to complete it – including taking drugs and losing her virginity.

I’ve been on the roads for about 2 months now, and I’m improving slowly but surely! My car Jeremy is still in one piece, although possibly slightly less clean than he was before, but I’m proud to say there have been no major problems yet (fingers crossed). So far I’ve attempted roundabouts and the A1 (which, I have to admit, scared me quite a bit). I know it’s daunting and you most likely really really don’t want to go back to school, but we all have to do it. It’s not all that bad though – you get to see all of your friends that you didn’t get around to catching up with over summer, and there’s the chance to start afresh and really make sure that you’re doing the best that you can! Why not take the opportunity to join a new club or sports team? If you’re nearing the end of school and thinking about university, then any extra-curricular activities that you do will really enhance

Elizabeth Olsen The younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Elizabeth is stepping out of her sisters’ shadow and is making a name for herself in the acting world. She made her film debut last year in Martha Marcy May Marlene, for which she received numerous awards and nominations, including Central Ohio Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress, and is set to star in upcoming films Very Good Girls and Kill Your Darlings.
