DEEPINGS RUFC OVERWHELMED BY SUPPORT FOR CLUB MAKEOVER Deepings Rugby Club is celebrating a successful weekend of hard work, thanks to the volunteers who came in great numbers to lend a helping hand to the club’s RBS RugbyForce Weekend. Everyone worked together to help the club prepare for the 2012/13 season by repairing, tidying and making all as part of the RBS RugbyForce Weekend programme. RBS RugbyForce 2012 provided clubs across the UK with tools and resources, to help them plan and deliver their own activities. DEEPING SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB SUMMER BALL Deepings Sports and Social Club recently hosted their 1st Annual Summer Ball, at Outgang Road in Market Deeping. The organisers organised a stunning marquee to be sited on the cricket outfield, accommodating 200 guests. Everyone enjoyed a three course meal, with entertainment by The Kommitments. DJ Michael Dean, from The Box, provided the disco. During the evening a silent auction and tombola were held to raise money for the two chosen charities, Parkinsons UK Bourne Branch and The Deeping Men’s Group. The sum of £2,500 was raised on the night and the Summer Ball committee would like to thank all sponsors and guests for supporting the ball. www.deepingsportsandsocialclub.co.uk
CASTLE COTTAGE Tony Robinson and his crew from Chanel 4’s Time Team stumbled upon a hidden gem in Oakham in June. The Castle Cottage Cafe is tucked away behind the red door in Church Passage, but the super sleuth time detectives had no problem in unearthing the perfect venue for a party following their archaeological project in Oakham. The Time Team was in Oakham at a ‘dig’ to investigate 12th Century remains inside Oakham Castle. The crew were excavating for three days and made some exciting discoveries including a 13th century horseshoe.

Since they opened our doors in July 2009, Alternative have seen over three hundred clients in a variety of situations; ages ranging from 13 to mid sixties for a number of reasons from unexpected pregnancies to pregnancy testing to sexual health advice. Alternatives also offer post abortion and baby loss counseling. Working in partnership with referral agencies (local GPs, health visitors, midwives) they are able to signpost to further services as appropriate. Recently, Alternatives also ran a week of tutorials at New College Stamford exploring relationships with students. This allowed discussion and debate with students around relationships. The work is undertaken in partnership with Stamford’s SureStart Children’s Centre. Alternatives vision is to provide help and support to women and their partners in the Stamford area who find themselves dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. To reach out to women, to partners and husbands to provide a safe, confidential environment where any person can access unbiased advice and information and talk through their options with trained advisors. Harleys Diner in Market Deeping hosted the first TransAtlantic Harley Rocks, Biker Party in the UK to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Kegal Harley Davidson in Rockford Illinois USA. 300 invited UK guests rocked the night away on Saturday Night at the same time as Kegal Harley Davidson hosted 4000 customers and friends with a BBQ and Live Bands in the afternoon. The UK Harley Rocks event was co-ordinated by Cellet Travel on behalf of Rockford Illinois Visitors Bureau to promote tourism to America and Illinois in particular. The evening started with a “Rolling Thunder” cavalcade of 100 Harley Davidson Motorcycles and other vehicles from Stamford to Market Deeping. Harley Davidson Motorcycle Clubs from throughout the UK attended this event to celebrate Kegal Harley Davidson’s special day and demonstrate that American style motorcycling is alive and well in the UK. As the Bikes roared into town, Cheerleaders from the local Ministry of Dance School welcomed them into town and add a touch of Americana. Guests then tucked into an authentic American Style BBQ and sampled a wide range of specially imported Hand Crafted American Beers to give them a taste of “Real America” The event also raised £150 to contribute to the term fund raising efforts for Afghan Heroes.

The Angel Hotel Brasserie in Bourne is under new management and they have made some fantastic changes to both the menu and the chef. The Brasserie offers a relaxing place to enjoy delicious food freshly prepared just for you. The restaurant is open every Wednesday – Saturday 6pm-9pm and Sunday lunch. The Angel Hotel mission statement is: ‘To exceed your expectations whilst supporting and being the hub of the local community.’ of Ribs, Potato Gnocchi with Spiced Chicken Breast on Pea Puree as well as vegetarian options and a superb grill menu too. With a childrens menu from £3.95 it is also a great place for families to enjoy superb cooked food. You have to leave a little room for dessert too, the difficulty will be deciding which one to have; Orange Crème Brûlée, Apple and Cinnamon Crumble, cheese board? The list goes on. I wanted to go along and see for myself how the restaurant had been improved and to sample their new menu. We were greeted by a waitress called Debbie, who was lovely and really made us feel welcome and that nothing was going to be too much trouble. After sitting with a drink in the bar, we were shown to our table. There was a party of 14 in the restaurant that evening, but this did not detract from the service and attention we received. After perusing the menu my partner Steve and I were immediately attracted to the taster menu, where you got to sample 3 starters, 3 main courses and 3 desserts – perfect! Our friends opted for the al la carte option, which had a varied selection of dishes, such as - Beer Battered Hake with triple cooked chips, Surf and Turf, BBQ Rack

The menu had been well thought out, using produce that is sourced locally, which is what a lot of chefs aim for, but do not always achieve. Craig Sampson, the headchef at the Angel is totally committed to using local farms and businesses for his ingredients to prepare the best dishes. The Angel Hotel also has function rooms available for up to 150 guests, a funky cocktail bar which is ideal for a smaller gathering and can be hired exclusively for private functions. FIRST RESPONDERS HONOURED WITH QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL Two volunteer First Responders in the Deepings were among the thousands nationwide that have been recognised for their service with the presentation of a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal after completing more than five years operational service “where they face the prospect of dealing with emergencies as part of their conditions of service”. Peter Ward and Dave Book are the longest serving front line members of the Deepings First Responders group of L.I.V.E.S. (Lincolnshire Integrated Emergency Service). The organisation, which is attached to EMAS (East Midlands Ambulance Service) has 60+ groups throughout Lincolnshire that provide a rapid response call-out service to most ambulance related 999 calls within specific, local boundaries. The Deepings group has provided cover to all of the villages in a 2 mile radius of Market Deeping for 10 years now with one or two volunteers available on-call from 7pm to 7am every night of the year (in this area the day shift being covered by Co-responders from the Retained Fire Service). A few plants to perhaps avoid in a child friendly garden – • Anything very spiky like Pyracantha and Berberis. • Plants that can cause irritation, like Euphorbia who’s sap can irritate the skin or Fremontidendron and its furry leaves that can cause breathing problems. • Anything poisonous like monks hood (Aconitum) or fox gloves (Digitalis) which are very dangerous
if ingested.
You could say that gardening is in my blood, my grandfather as his father before him, a head gardener, my dad a keen and very capable gardener, I think the path I chose was probably inevitable! Gardening doesn’t just offer us great pleasure but also our children; just the simple act of sowing a seed waiting for the first shoot to appear and watching it grow is enough to inspire a future generation of young gardeners.
To capture the imagination of your young gardeners maybe we should look at plants that excite the senses – • • • •
Calendular a lovely annual, bright flowers and as they fade seeds of three very different shapes. Stachys byzantine or ‘lambs ear’s with soft furry foliage that you can’t resist stroking. Picking fresh Strawberries or eating raw peas from the pod no child could resist! Growing potatoes in the ground or if space is limited in large pots on your patio, when it’s time to harvest them it’s like searching for buried treasure!
To help inspire your budding gardeners how about – • • •
Sow some giant sunflowers and see who can grow the tallest. Making a wildlife container pond with a large waterproof glazed pot, filled with water and add small aquatic plants. How about using hazel sticks to make a teepee, and then growing runner beans all over it and hay presto a living and partly edible den.
A nice way to introduce your children to fruit and vegetable growing is to build a simple raised bed, the wood can be painted and decorated. Put in a strawberry plant, sow successional crops like lettuce, spring onions and beetroot, and longer term crops like carrots, peas and French beans that can just be dug up or picked and eaten raw. Stamford Foodbank is based at All Saints’ & St John’s Church Centre, although all of the Churches in Stamford are pulling together for this great cause. The Churches involved are - Church Baptist, Life Church, Salvation Army, St Mary & Augustine’s RC, St George’s, St Martin’s, St Mary’s, United Reformed.
How a Foodbank works Foodbank is an organisation which provides a safety net of 3 days emergency food for people in a financial crisis. Only people with a genuine need of assistance will benefit from this charity, and there is a network of frontline care professionals, trained to identify those people in need.

How you can help Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to the Foodbank at various collection points around the town. Supermarket collections are one of the main ways that food is donated, and you will find a shopping trolley at the entrance/exit of the Sainsbury’s store in Stamford, with a list of what food they need most. All they ask is that you purchase one or two extra items within your weekly shop, to give to this worthy cause. Want to help even more? Could you start a Foodbank collection point at your work, school or church?
Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a Foodbank voucher.
Clients receive food Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a Foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea/coffee with cake/biscuits and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem. Foodbank also run a rural delivery service, which takes emergency food boxes to clients living in rural areas who possibly cannot get to a foodbank.

THE OLDE BARN SPA RETREAT After all our constant hard work each month, making sure we produce a fabulous magazine for you to read, we decided it was time for some serious R&R for the Scene team. We, therefore decided to head to The Olde Barn at Marston, just north of Grantham. This charming rustic Spa hotel is set in beautiful countryside and the character and charm of the place is very inviting. We all booked a massage and some of us went for facials, whilst the others had manicures and pedicures using OPI products – it was pure luxury! The pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room really added to the experience and meant we could all totally relax and unwind. For the more energetic there is a fully equipped gym available, but we were there to chill and chat, so the treadmill was ignored on this occasion. After a delicious lunch, we continued with our treatments, in between relaxing by the pool. It really was a great day out and only 30 minutes north of Stamford on the A1. We all detoured into Downtown to do some shopping on the way home, which was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

TORCH RELAY The Paralympic Torch relay takes place from 24 – 29 August. Building on the traditional Torch Relay format, the relay begins in London on Friday 24 August with the lighting of England’s flame. Once a flame has been lit, it will visit local community groups and key locations in and around the city.

The Barcelona 1992 Games featured 3,021 athletes from 82 nations. The London 2012 Paralympic Games will feature 20 different sports with as many as 4,200 athletes from 150 nations taking part.

“Don’t Run before you can Walk!” or “ Listen to your Body!” The Olympics can’t help but inspire us to have a go or increase our exercise levels. Healthcare professionals encourage daily exercise and I am no different. However don’t run before you can walk! Don’t try to run a marathon without entering into a structured training programme and warming up and cooling down pre and post exercise. Muscles and joints are most vulnerable when asked to work in a way we haven’t before or at least not for a long while. Build exercise regimes up slowly. 20 mins daily is a good place to start. Begin gently but enough to raise your heart rate; brisk walking, jogging, swimming or gardening. Be aware of

your limitations. If you carry excess weight, start by walking, building gradually and loose some weight first before you sign up for exercise classes that look like such fun. If you start exercising and end up in pain, listen to your body. It may go away with time but is just as likely to return unless you get it sorted. It is difficult for the lay-person to identify whether pain originates from joints, muscles or both so my advice would be play it safe. Use an ice pack rather than heat, especially when dealing with back pain. Wildcats Theatre School are getting ready for an exciting new school year in September, when they open the doors to their new Academy building. The premises, in St Peters Hill, Stamford will become home to the Wildcats - and all Stamford based classes and activities will be based from the venue. It will also host the new Wildcats Post 16 Academy - a full time two year course working towards the BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre). The move will allow Wildcat students to benefit from new facilities including studio rooms, teaching rooms, an IT suite, Musical Theatre library and much more. The school have just received their latest set of exam results. Students at the Theatre School work towards LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams in Musical Theatre, Acting and Verse and Prose. Students achieved a 100% pass rate with 75% of students achieving merit and distinction grades.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: summer fashion trends for children So, it’s the infamous school holidays and whether you’re going away to soak up the sun abroad, or staying on home turf, the highstreet has ensured that, this summer, the kids are looking just as good as the adults!
The two key looks this season seen on the catwalks were ‘New Edge’ and ‘Technicolor’. From the catwalk to the high street, these two trends have been adopted by the biggest stores in the business providing fashionable attire from toddlers to teenagers. H&M’s ‘Celebrate Summer’ collection blends both looks mixing the 80s hot-trend of dungarees with bright neon T’s to create a thoroughly modern, fresh look.
