Pattaya also known as Fun City is Thailand’s most popular resort only 90 minutes from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. GETTING AROUND
One of the wonderful things about Pattaya is the fact that getting around is so easy, either locally or nationally. Here are some of our tips for getting around when based in Pattaya.
LOCAL TRANSPORT BAHT BUS Baht buses are a fantastic way to get around the city and run along all major routes. The price for most journeys is THB10 although for longer distances this may go up to THB20. Off-route baht buses are expensive so check in advance. MOTORBIKE TAXI There are lots of motorbike taxis available around Pattaya and they are a fast and cheap way to get around once you overcome the initial fear! METERED TAXI Metered taxis are becoming more common in Pattaya although the drivers prefer not to use the meters and will ask for a steep fixed price for the journey. UBER & GRAB TAXI This method of transport is growing in popularity and is often cheaper than using standard metered taxis. However, there is some resistance from local taxi drivers so getting an available car can prove difficult but worth a try.
REGIONAL TRANSPORT BUS & COACH There are two main bus stations in Pattaya, one on North Pattaya Road and one on the southbound carriageway of Sukhumvit Road near the Pattaya Klang turn. From here you can travel to several destinations around the country with more destinations offered by other operators. (Continued) 8

MINIBUS There are lots of minibus services running between Pattaya and Bangkok as well as other areas. These are a faster alternative to the larger buses with prices being similar. Downside is they are known to drive dangerously. METERED & PRIVATE TAXI You can get metered and private taxis to most areas of the country. Some have fixed price lists whilst others prefer to negotiate a price. This is an excellent option if you are visiting places that aren’t directly on a bus route. FERRY The Koh Larn ferry runs every hour daily which is convenient and well-priced. The Hua Hin passenger ferry is modern, takes under 3 hours although pricey. TRAIN Trains are not the faster way to get around but they are a great way to see the country. Pattaya Train station is in East Pattaya close to the Highway 7. PLANE Domestic and international flights are available from U-Tapao aka as Pattaya International which is 40 minutes drive, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang take 90 and 120 minutes drive respectively. Regional flights are good value.
OTHER OPTIONS CAR & MOTORBIKE RENTAL Having access to your own car or motorbike certainly gives you more freedom. There are lots of reputable vehicle rental companies in the city but make sure they offer first class rental insurance. BUYING A CAR OR BIKE Regular or long-term renters may find it cheaper to purchase their own vehicle. New vehicles are quite expensive but hold their value well and there are naturally the same potential issues as you would find anywhere else in the world when it comes to buying a second-hand vehicle. Obtaining credit can also be a problem. TRAVEL TIPS Common sense obviously plays a huge role in travelling around Pattaya and Thailand. Drink driving is naturally a big no-no but there are plenty of occasions where travel can be particularly difficult. Friday afternoons always see a large increase in the volume of traffic as too do Public Holidays and weekends. Allowing plenty of time for travel is advisable as accidents are holdups are common. SHOPPING GUIDE
Pattaya has numerous large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but do not expect to find variety as most shops are selling the same things. Pattaya actually has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok for variety and volume of shops but it is trying with several new shopping centres opening in recent years, and there’s more to come.
Bargaining is a way of life here but don’t worry if you don’t know your Thai numbers as most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule what ever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay. VENUE JOMTIEN COMPLEX DATE 3 APRIL Starting at 2pm, Jomtien Complex will be hosting the Queen of Hearts 2018 competition for transgender and ladyboys to show off their beauty. Naturally, on a smaller scale than the one held at Tiffany’s, the competition attracts plenty of Pattaya’s best looking ladyboys to take part in a show that is plenty of fun.
02 EARTH DAY CLEAN UP THE REEF
VENUE MERMAIDS DIVE CENTRE DATE 7 APRIL Earth Day is officially 22 April but has been moved in Pattaya to accommodate the Songkran festival. Once again the magnificent Mermaids Dive Centre will be playing their part in cleaning up the seas around Pattaya. They will be collecting plastics, nets and any other underwater trash that is disturbing and damaging the local reefs. After a hard days work, there will be a BBQ back at Mermaids to celebrate their achievements.

VENUE ROYAL CLIFF HOTEL DATE 7 APRIL The popular British Comedian will be appearing live at the Royal Cliff Hotel as part of his Bill Bailey: Live in Asia Tour. He will be recalling amusing stories of travelling and his general shenanigans that have taken place during his illustrious career on the comedy circuit. The act will include, plenty of jokes, musical performances by the man himself with many stories going off at tangents. All topics will be covered and prices start at just 1000 Thai baht. 20

VENUE CENTRAL FESTIVAL PATTAYA BEACH DATE 13 APRIL With Songkran officially getting underway across Thailand on 13 April, parties will be beginning in earnest, if that haven’t already, with a large water splash taking place at Central Festival on Pattaya Beach Road. The water fights start around 12pm and will go on until the early evening.

VENUE NAKLUA & PATTAYA DATE 18 & 19 APRIL The Thai New Year, known as Songkran, will be celebrated in Naklua on 18 April and in Pattaya on 19 April. This is perhaps the biggest, friendly water fight in the world and all main roads in the areas will be closed on these days to allow the carnival-like event to take place. Have your water pistols and buckets at the ready and join in the fun!
06 AN EVENING WITH IAN RUSH VENUE RETOX GAMEON DATE 20 APRIL
Liverpool Football Club’s goalscoring legend Ian Rush will be appearing at Retox Gameon, on 20 April with events getting underway at around 7.30pm. Currently an ambassador for the club, Rush will be recalling many of the greatest moments of his career as well as participating in a Q&A session. An auction will take place featuring 2 signed shirts by many liverpool legends.

Ian Rush is Liverpool’s all-time goalscorer with 346 goals and you can meet him exclusively at Retox Game On. Ian Rush, MBE, was born in St. Asaph in 1961 and went on to become something of a goalscoring legend during his time with Liverpool which covered two spells from 1980 to 1987 and 1988 to 1996. During his time with the Merseyside club, he scored 346 goals making him their all-time leading scorer. His time at Anfield was only broken by a spell with Juventus in Italy for whom he signed for a record £3.2 million, rejoining Liverpool for £2.7 million a year later. During his playing career, Rush won 5 League Championships, 3 FA Cups, 5 League Cups and a European Cup. In 1984 he was also the European Golden Boot winner, a year that also saw him pick up the PFA Player of the Year Award, a year after winning the PFA Young Player of the Year trophy. He will always be regarded as a ‘great’ and ‘legend’, terms that are all too frequently used in football these days. Rush helped develop Robbie Fowler who himself went on to break many goalscoring records on Merseyside. Rush was Welsh international and made 73 appearances, scoring 28 goals for his country over a 16 year period. After leaving finally Liverpool he had short playing spells with Leeds United, Newcastle United, Sheffield United and Wrexham. He had a period as manager of Chester City in 2004 to 2005 as well as working in the media as a pundit. He still appears in the Masters 5-a-side tournaments and is a hugely popular figure at these games. Rush is still heavily associated with Liverpool Football Club and can frequently be seen at games alongside his former strike partner, Kenny Dalglish. He’s also a Soccer Schools Ambassador for the club and works closely on the commercial side, forging strong links and partnerships with global brands. 22

Sometimes we feel like we need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Pattaya and there are several islands nearby that are perfect for just that. KOH LARN Koh Larn is the closest island to Pattaya and is just a 45-minute ferry crossing from Bali Hai Pier. The island has several sandy beaches lapped by clear, azure waters with the most popular being Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach. Accommodation on the island varies from basic chalets to upmarket resorts. The Phonpenyom Restaurant offers excellent seafood and the Klom Klom bar is modern bar offering music and pool. Transportation on the island is via Songtaew or it is possible to hire motorbikes. KOH SAMET Koh Samet can be reached by ferry leaving from Ban Phe Pier which is around an hour’s drive from Pattaya. Samet has some of the best beaches in the region and the island has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife and water sports. Accommodation ranges from small beachfront bungalows to luxury villas. Ban Ploi restaurant is a floating restaurant close by that is renowned for its seafood and other popular Thai dishes. Transportation is generally either by speedboat or Songtaew although motorbikes can be rented. KOH CHANG Koh Chang is around 4 hour’s drive away from Pattaya and is possibly the best-preserved tourist destination in Thailand. Comprising of 70% rainforest, the island has an abundance of sandy coves, beaches and wildlife. Koh Chang has a lively nightlife and excellent restaurants.
