HISTORY GUIDE

Pattaya, also known as Fun City, is Thailand’s most popular resort and only 90 minutes by car from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown; it’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the heart of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats and you’ll find many gogo bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and even the occasional ladyboy. Food is another highlight of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. Cajun, Chinese, Indian, Italian, English, French, Vietnamese, German, Russian and more. Today Pattaya attracts annually more than a million tourists from all over the world. Pattaya provides world class hotels, restaurants, sports, entertainment and shopping. Read the full version on our website at history.pattaya.guide 8 History Guide

GETTING AROUND

One of the wonderful things about Pattaya is the fact that getting around is so easy, either locally or nationally. Here are some of our tips for getting around when based in Pattaya.

LOCAL TRANSPORT BAHT BUS Baht buses are a fantastic way to get around the city and run along all major routes. The price for most journeys is 10 Baht although for longer distances this maybe 20 Baht. Off-route baht buses are expensive so check in advance. MOTORBIKE TAXI There are lots of motorbike taxis available around Pattaya and they are a fast and cheap way to get around once you overcome the initial fear! METERED TAXI Metered taxis are becoming more common in Pattaya although the drivers prefer not to use the meters and will ask for a steep fixed price for the journey. GRAB TAXI This method of transport is growing in popularity and is often cheaper than using standard metered taxis. However, there is some resistance from local taxi drivers so getting an available car can prove difficult but worth a try.

REGIONAL TRANSPORT BUS & COACH There are two main bus stations in Pattaya, one on North Pattaya Road and one on the southbound carriageway of Sukhumvit Road near the Pattaya Klang turn. From here you can travel to several destinations around the country with more destinations offered by other operators. (Continued) 10 getting around

MINIBUS There are lots of minibus services running between Pattaya and Bangkok as well as other areas. These are a faster alternative to the larger buses with prices being similar. Downside is they are known to drive dangerously. METERED & PRIVATE TAXI You can get metered and private taxis to most areas of the country. Some have fixed price lists whilst others prefer to negotiate a price. This is an excellent option if you are visiting places that aren’t directly on a bus route. FERRY The Koh Larn ferry runs every hour daily which is convenient and well-priced. The Hua Hin passenger ferry is modern, takes under 3 hours although pricey. TRAIN Trains are not the faster way to get around but they are a great way to see the country. Pattaya Train station is in East Pattaya close to the Highway 7. PLANE Domestic and international flights are available from U-Tapao aka as Pattaya International which is 40 minutes drive, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang take 90 and 120 minutes drive respectively. Regional flights are good value.

OTHER OPTIONS CAR & MOTORBIKE RENTAL Having access to your own car or motorbike certainly gives you more freedom. There are lots of reputable vehicle rental companies in the city but make sure they offer first class rental insurance. BUYING A CAR OR BIKE Regular or long-term renters may find it cheaper to purchase their own vehicle. New vehicles are quite expensive but hold their value well and there are naturally the same potential issues as you would find anywhere else in the world when it comes to buying a second-hand vehicle. Obtaining credit can also be a problem. TRAVEL TIPS Common sense obviously plays a huge role in travelling around Pattaya and Thailand. Drink driving is naturally a big no-no but there are plenty of occasions where travel can be particularly difficult. Friday afternoons always see a large increase in the volume of traffic as too do Public Holidays and weekends. Allowing plenty of time for travel is advisable as accidents are holdups are common. 12 getting around

SHOPPING GUIDE

Pattaya has large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Regardless of what you are looking for in Pattaya, you will be able to find it but don’t expect an abundance of shops all selling different things. In reality, you can expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but the city has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok. The major malls are Central Pattaya Beach, Royal Garden Plaza, Central Marina, and Harbor Mall which has excellent facilities for kids that can keep them occupied for an entire weekend. King Power mall is purely for holiday-makers. Terminal 21 mall and hotel is located on North Pattaya Road next to the Dolphin Roundabout, adding to Pattaya’s international reputation. Thepprasit Night Market opens Friday to Sunday and is the largest night market in the region, it’s definitely a must see for all tourists. There are also smaller markets open day and night selling clothes to hand made crafts Like with many other parts of Asia, bargaining is a way of life and often something that feels quite alien to Europeans and North Americans. Don’t let a small matter like not knowing your Thai numbers put you off either, most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule whatever their first price is, halve it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Always remember to smile and make eye contact. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay. Losing face in Thailand or losing your temper for that matter are big no-no’s so always keep this in mind if you are looking to pick up a bargain. 24 Shopping Guide

TELEVISION GUIDE

Sometimes the hectic life of Pattaya takes its toll, and we want to sit back, relax and watch some great telly. However, deciding what to watch can be a bit of a challenge! The options for watching our favourite shows have improved a great deal in recent years, and we are no longer stuck with the local cable offering old movies, English speaking news channels and dreadfully produced local TV. Faster internet speed now means that we can access pretty much all our favourite shows from around the world. Here we give you a brief lowdown on the free and available paid streaming options. FREE STREAMING Free streaming is available to everyone who has a laptop, mobile device, smart TV, Chromecast or media box. It is excellent for accessing thousands of options literally, but it’s heavily reliant on fast internet connections. If you don’t have this, sadly the free-option may not quite cut the mustard. PAY-TV SERVICES True TV is one of the most expensive but best options for movies and sports fans and is available via cable, satellite or internet. Netflix offers an excellent selection of international TV shows and movies. The variety of children’s programmes is a fantastic way to keep the young ones happy and quiet! Once again it is available across a range of devices making it ideal for families. Amazon Prime is perhaps a superior version of Netflix and offers plenty of content that isn’t available from other sources. Prime works well when streamed across multiple devices. Minix boxes, Chromecast and Apple TV, provide an excellent selection of free and paid content. 28 Television Guide

ISLAND GUIDE

Sometimes we feel like we need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Pattaya and there are several islands nearby that are perfect for just that. KOH LARN Koh Larn is the closest island to Pattaya and is just a 45 minute ferry crossing from Bali Hai Pier. The island has several sandy beaches lapped by clear, azure waters with the most popular being Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach. Accommodation on the island varies from basic chalets to upmarket resorts. The Phonpenyom Restaurant offers excellent seafood and the Klom Klom bar is modern bar offering music and pool. Transportation on the island is via Songtaew or it is possible to hire motorbikes. KOH SAMET Koh Samet can be reached by ferry leaving from Ban Phe Pier which is around an hour’s drive from Pattaya. Samet has some of the best beaches in the region and the island has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife and water sports. Accommodation ranges from small beach front bungalows to luxury villas. Ban Ploi restaurant is a floating restaurant close by that is renowned for its seafood and other popular Thai dishes. Transportation around the island is either by speedboat or Songtaew although motorbikes can be rented. KOH CHANG Koh Chang is around 4 hour’s drive away from Pattaya and is possibly the best-preserved tourist destination in Thailand. Comprising of 70% rainforest, the island has an abundance of sandy coves, beaches and wildlife. Koh Chang has a lively nightlife and excellent restaurants. 30 Island Guide

BURAPHA 2020

Burapa Bike Week 2020 will take place from the 13th to 15th February at the usual venue, Pattaya National Stadium, on Soi Chiayapruek 2 in East Pattaya. Expect many bikers. The primary purpose of the event is to raise money for local and national children’s charities with all profits that are made from the event being donated to registered charities across the Kingdom. The event had come along from its humble beginnings 22 years ago when the region’s motorbike clubs came together to start the event. Initially, there were around 200 people in attendance with small, but nevertheless, substantial sums of money were raised. These days the festival lasts three days with over 100,000 people coming through the gates. Its popularity has stretched far beyond just the biker fraternity and is a popular family event. WHAT TO EXPECT The main emphasis of the weekend is fun with a party atmosphere is created by the array of talented bands playing. There is an excellent selection of food available as well as activities that are arranged to raise money for charities. Of course, as it is a “bike week” there is a heavy emphasis on the bikes themselves. The event begins with the “Ride for Peace”, a parade that sees bikers from around Thailand descend on Pattaya and make their way to the stadium. The bike owners are always keen to show off their bikes, many of which are custom made. Also, there will be opportunities to buy a new bike or to buy parts for a bike that you may already own. Leading motorbike and accessories manufacturers from around the world have incredible displays. Whether you are interested in motorcycles or not, if you are young or old, you will definitely enjoy the day or days, and best of all, it’s all for a good cause. 34 Burapha 2020

THE MUSIC Of course, just like any other festival, music plays a massive role in proceedings at Burapa. You will find two main stages, which host both Thai and international bands, many of whom are well-known locally. As you would expect, rock and electric is the basis for all the music, so dance and hip-hop lovers may be a little disappointed! The music is undoubtedly loud, to say the least. Still, if it gets a bit too much, you head away from the two main stages and take in some of the other forms of entertainment that are available. FOOD AND DRINK Burapa is an all-day event, so naturally, food and drinks are required. Luckily, you will find an extensive choice of stalls serving freshly prepared food. Typically, most are Thai foods, but you will also be all to get burgers and hotdogs and other western food if you would prefer. Beer is available from plenty of tents, and it is always cold and refreshing – just what is need when watching the fantastic bands or looking at the bikes! TIP! Burapa is incredibly popular with the number of visitors increasing year on year, so you certainly want to get there early. Also, getting away at the end so you may want to bide your time and let some of the congestion ease. It is strongly advised that you turn up prepared for the festival as well as expect disruption on the roads during the Ride for Peace Parade. The streets nearby are likely to be very crowded. Although there is parking available with large numbers in attendance, it can at times be at something of a premium. If you are planning on getting home early, allow yourself to get away to minimise disruption to your plans. That being said, there are always plenty of stewards in attendance to try and make the whole thing run as smoothly as possible. Most of all, enjoy this amazing annual festival. email sales@pattaya.guide | website www.pattaya.guide

Of course, this is something that we should do all the time, but perhaps as men, it is something that goes overlooked, but we get that gentle reminder each year! HISTORY OF VALENTINE’S DAY St. Valentine’s Day is held each year on February 14th, it had done since the end of the 5th Century when Pope Gelasius officially declared it. However, it appears to date back further. During Roman times, a day in mid-February was known as Lupercalia. It was Day to celebrate fertility, and the Ancient Greeks also had a mid-winter celebration which was something similar that celebrated the marriage of Zeus and Hera. HOW IT HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS Valentine’s Day started as a ritual celebration before becoming a more religious celebration before becoming a commercial celebration which was celebrated around the world. The 19th Century began to see the exchanging of cards and small gifts and by the mid-20th Century that had grown to become gifts such as chocolate, gold (perfect for Pattaya!) and expensive engagement rings. It certainly retains some sentimental meaning, but arguably it is more commercial than anything else. VALENTINE DAY IN PATTAYA Valentine’s Day is, of course, celebrated in Pattaya, a city that is renowned the world over for being a party town and one that needs little excuse to celebrate. It is also a city of love (ahem), with men taking their loved ones to restaurants and lavishing them with gifts. 40 Cover Feature

Pattaya is undoubtedly a great place to celebrate Valentine’s Day with so many things to do and so many places to visit. GREAT RESTAURANTS TO GO WITH A LOVED ONE If there is one thing that Pattaya has an abundance of it is excellent restaurants. When it comes to a Valentine meal, you want it to be extra special. Pick a romantic venue that will serve up a delicious meal and ensure a memorable day for your loved one. Here are only a few of the places that we would recommend but book early to avoid disappointment. CAFÉ DES AMIS Café des Amis is almost certainly the best a la carte restaurant in Pattaya making it the perfect venue for a special occasion such as Valentine’s Day. It is more expensive, but that is more than justified by the quality of the food, the service, the wine and gin list. If you are planning on going, book early. BACCO BEACH ITALIAN RESTAURANT What is more romantic than being with the one you love watching the sunset slowly set? Bacco Beach in Na Jomtien is the perfect setting for this while offering exquisite Italian food complemented by fine Italian and international wines. An ideal environment with ideal food! SURF ‘N’ TURF Surf ‘n’ Turf is another idyllic beachfront setting, this time in Wongamat. They again serve superb food focusing more on seafood and good quality meat dishes. The atmosphere is more relaxed than the previous two venues. Still, the quality of the food and service is certainly not compromised. THE BIG HOTELS All of the larger, upmarket hotels such as the Dusit Thani, Hilton, Centara Grand Mirage, Royal Cliff and the Grand Centerpoint offer fabulous Valentine’s Day meals in a perfect setting with 5-star service. While they may lack the personal touch of the other options, the quality can never be questioned. FEBRUARY 29TH 2020 Of course, as 2020 is a leap year, it is an event that has another potentially romantic day on February 29th, when the female in the relationship gets the opportunity to propose. For some of the ladies out there, it may be an opportunity that is too good to miss! email sales@pattaya.guide | website www.pattaya.guide

FITNESS GUIDE

A healthy lifestyle can be achieved anywhere in the world and Pattaya is certainly one of the most popular places people choose to stay fit and in shape. Thailand has a tropical climate and is therefore ideal for the pursuit of outdoor activities. There are the regular water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing, beach activities such as volleyball and beach football along with scuba diving, golf and much, much more. Keeping fit and healthy may not be one of the first things that you think about when you come to Pattaya, after all, there are so many other distractions and activities but it is something that everyone can take part in. You can walk on the recently improved promenades at both Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach or why not take an evening stroll around Buddha Hill at Pratamnak? There really is plenty to do without breaking the bank. If you are looking at being a little more active and considering going to a gym, you will find some excellent options all around the city. Gyms are in most areas and for those living in East Pattaya, you can find the superb Castra Gym where you can buy all the necessary supplements to help with your workout. You will also find several places where you can play tennis, squash or badminton to help you keep in shape. Fitness, health, and wellbeing are all incorporated under the same banner. In addition to the excellent gyms, water sports and other recreational activities that take place in the city, there are also a number of yoga and pilates studios. If you are in a need of a bit of pampering, you could consider visiting one of the vast number of 5 star health massage organisations such as Jomtien Sauna, beauty parlours, plastic surgery clinics, spas and fitness centre mean that Pattaya really is the place to improve your overall health and look. 42 Fitness Guide

GOLF GUIDE

Pattaya has an incredible selection of golf courses to meet all budgets and skill levels that you won’t be disappointed. There are 26 championship standard courses within 45 minutes of Pattaya, designed by the very best golf architects and designers. Clubhouse facilities are excellent with everything you might need and more, including great restaurants, swimming pools, massage facilities, shower and locker rooms. Caddies guide you through your round with advice and encouragement. Quite simply, golfing in Pattaya is a match for anywhere in the world at a fraction of the cost with each course offering a fantastic experience for golfers of all abilities (with no course requiring a handicap card). So, whether you are a low handicap golfer, one who enjoys a challenge or a complete novice there is no better place to play than the courses around Pattaya. Green fees range from 750 baht during the week at Crystal Bay all the way upto 5000 baht for a weekend round at one of the top courses such as Siam Country Club. Caddy Fees range from 300 baht to 400 baht and carts are from 400 baht to 700 baht depending on the course you choose. There are now 38 golf groups in Pattaya which offer golf outings and tournaments on a regular basis, and players often get a better deal compared with booking direct with the golf course. You can find out more by visiting www.golf.pattaya.guide or www.birdie.in.th - both these sites include handicap software so you can also track your golf scores and progress. Pattaya has plenty of driving ranges for you to practice your swing before you hit the fairways, and the number of golf shops has risen dramatically over the past decade, with golf proving popular with tourists, expats and Thais. There are very few places around the world as good as Pattaya for golfers. 44 Golf Guide

VISA GUIDE

Thai Business Help has been helping thousands of expats and tourists from around the world with all types of visa applications, extensions and renewals since 2010. They’re Pattaya’s 1st choice when it comes to getting visas and work permits, with many business owners, and even local lawyers choosing them for their fast and professional service that no one else can match. They offer excellent advice when setting up a business in Pattaya, they’re renowned for the best value too, look at the prices in the advert opposite. Some customers price compare, and always come back to use their services. All too often, we hear of horror stories of customers who have chosen service providers who either deliberately mislead, or unknowingly offer poor advice which results in higher prices and add hidden costs, and worse of all, a service that takes weeks and months. Be careful of visa/business service providers that don’t have a website, or don’t advertise in magazines, or those that have been recently setup. This will save you a lot of hassle, time and money. Thai Business Help should be your 1st choice for visa services, business services, bookkeeping and accounting. You can rest assured you’ll get a good service at a great price, with everything delivered on time to your satisfaction. They also offer services that include company setup and company changes, work permit application and renewals, plus licence applications for bars, restaurants, guesthouses and hotels, and a host of many other services. So whatever services you need, from visa applications, extensions, renewals to work permits, business services to non-trading annual audits for your home. You can contact them for more information or to arrange an appointment at their office in Soi Khao Noi, 800m fr. Sukhumvit Road. Call 0895 434 424 or email save@thaibusinesshelp.com 50 Visa Guide

MARKETING GUIDE

Understanding the differences between online marketing and traditional marketing that deliver the best results. Over the past few years Facebook has become more popular with Pattaya business owners as a free alternative to paid marketing. Unfortunately, there are very few examples where businesses have been truly successful with just Facebook alone. Sure you can boost posts and set your targets but is it truly enough to capture all potential customers? The answer is no. Traditional marketing along with online marketing is the best method for the majority of businesses to succeed in Pattaya. Most businesses have a physical address, from a restaurant to an office, customers turn up and place orders. For this to happen, exterior signage is very important, but how many times have people been let down by poor signs in trying to find a place in Pattaya? But before customers come through the door, they will be seeking services maybe from an optician or a dentist? Many people search on Google and Facebook via their mobile, others prefer to ask their friends at the local bar. Plenty of tourists pick up the Pattaya Guide, some expats listen to the radio in the car. Whatever the medium, try and cover all options for the greatest reach. There are many ways to capture an audience, and if you have a good business model, you’ll use all available methods that suit your business and budget. Since 2006, OPEN Design Studio, a professional marketing company have had a great deal of experience advising many business owners the direction they should take with their marketing campaigns to increase brand awareness, and more importantly, sales. More than a decade later they’re still thriving. If you’re a new business owner, then contact the team at OPEN Design Studio and arrange a meeting to discuss your marketing strategy.

NIGHTLIFE SECTION

You don’t need to have been in Pattaya very long to have worked out that the city is brimming with nightlife. Over the following pages we cover nightlife in Pattaya so you know the best places to go. For more info, visit our website www.nightlife.pattaya.guide There are some superb hotspots on Walking Street such as Sapphire Club, Taboo Club and Wildcats Agogo plus fantastic live music venues such as The Stones House and many more choices. In terms of nightclubs, you have Mixx and Lucifer that cater for a variety of different genres of music. Along with a few excellent restaurants and the odd street performer, Walking Street has everything in terms of nightlife. LK Metro just off Soi Buakhao is another of Pattaya’s gems. Once again you will find some excellent bars such as i-rovers in addition to Pulse Agogo, Touch Agogo and other great venues where you will find some of the hottest girls in Pattaya. This is becoming one of the best places for bars in the city and has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and will shortly be overtaking Walking Street as the main place to go. Of course, Pattaya has many other hidden treasures away from Walking Street and LK Metro. Soi Buakhao, and beyond all have an abundance of bars, massage shops and sports bars where you will once again find a wide selection of beautiful girls who will be more than happy to keep you entertained for an hour or two. Phratumnak and of course the Darkside also have their fair share of hidden treasures if you fancy exploring. Naturally, Pattaya’s nightlife has far more to offer than just sexy girls and sports bars. Live music is easy to find and most of the bands are excellent, there are plenty of pool and snooker venues to keep you entertained, overall there is a great choice across Pattaya including the Darkside (East Pattaya). 60 Nightlife Section
