HISTORY GUIDE

Pattaya also known as Fun City is Thailand’s most popular resort only 90 minutes drive from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats and you’ll find many gogo bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and the odd ladyboy. Food is another highlight of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. Cajun, Chinese, Indian, Italian, English, French, Vietnamese, German, Russian and more. Today Pattaya attracts annually more then a million tourists from all over the world. Pattaya provides high standard hotels, restaurants, sports, entertainment and shopping. It really has it all and a whole lot more. GETTING AROUND

One of the wonderful things about Pattaya is the fact that getting around is so easy, either locally or nationally. Here are some of our tips for getting around when based in Pattaya.

LOCAL TRANSPORT BAHT BUS Baht buses are a fantastic way to get around the city and run along all major routes. The price for most journeys is 10 Baht although for longer distances this maybe 20 Baht. Off-route baht buses are expensive so check in advance. MOTORBIKE TAXI There are lots of motorbike taxis available around Pattaya and they are a fast and cheap way to get around once you overcome the initial fear! METERED TAXI Metered taxis are becoming more common in Pattaya although the drivers prefer not to use the meters and will ask for a steep fixed price for the journey. GRAB TAXI This method of transport is growing in popularity and is often cheaper than using standard metered taxis. However, there is some resistance from local taxi drivers so getting an available car can prove difficult but worth a try.

REGIONAL TRANSPORT BUS & COACH There are two main bus stations in Pattaya, one on North Pattaya Road and one on the southbound carriageway of Sukhumvit Road near the Pattaya Klang turn. From here you can travel to several destinations around the country with more destinations offered by other operators. (Continued) 8 getting around

MINIBUS There are lots of minibus services running between Pattaya and Bangkok as well as other areas. These are a faster alternative to the larger buses with prices being similar. Downside is they are known to drive dangerously. METERED & PRIVATE TAXI You can get metered and private taxis to most areas of the country. Some have fixed price lists whilst others prefer to negotiate a price. This is an excellent option if you are visiting places that aren’t directly on a bus route. FERRY The Koh Larn ferry runs every hour daily which is convenient and well-priced. The Hua Hin passenger ferry is modern, takes under 3 hours although pricey. TRAIN Trains are not the faster way to get around but they are a great way to see the country. Pattaya Train station is in East Pattaya close to the Highway 7. PLANE Domestic and international flights are available from U-Tapao aka as Pattaya International which is 40 minutes drive, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang take 90 and 120 minutes drive respectively. Regional flights are good value.

OTHER OPTIONS CAR & MOTORBIKE RENTAL Having access to your own car or motorbike certainly gives you more freedom. There are lots of reputable vehicle rental companies in the city but make sure they offer first class rental insurance. BUYING A CAR OR BIKE Regular or long-term renters may find it cheaper to purchase their own vehicle. New vehicles are quite expensive but hold their value well and there are naturally the same potential issues as you would find anywhere else in the world when it comes to buying a second-hand vehicle. Obtaining credit can also be a problem. TRAVEL TIPS Common sense obviously plays a huge role in travelling around Pattaya and Thailand. Drink driving is naturally a big no-no but there are plenty of occasions where travel can be particularly difficult. Friday afternoons always see a large increase in the volume of traffic as too do Public Holidays and weekends. Allowing plenty of time for travel is advisable as accidents are holdups are common. 10 getting around

SHOPPING GUIDE

Pattaya has large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Regardless of what you are looking for in Pattaya, you will be able to find it but don’t expect an abundance of shops all selling different things. In reality, you can expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but the city has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok. The major malls are Central Pattaya Beach, Royal Garden Plaza, Central Marina, and Harbor Mall which has excellent facilities for kids that can keep them occupied for an entire weekend. King Power mall is purely for holiday makers. Terminal 21 mall and hotel will be located on North Pattaya Road next to the Dolphin Roundabout which is due to open at the end of 2018. Thepprasit Night Market opens Friday to Sunday and is the largest night market in the region, it’s definitely a must see for all tourists. There are also smaller markets open day and night selling clothes to hand made crafts Like with many other parts of Asia, bargaining is a way of life and often something that feels quite alien to Europeans and North Americans. Don’t let a small matter like not knowing your Thai numbers put you off either, most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule whatever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Always remember to smile and make eye contact. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay. Losing face in Thailand or losing your temper for that matter are big no-no’s so always keep this in mind if you are looking to pick up a bargain. 18 Shopping Guide

TELEVISION GUIDE

Sometimes the hectic life of Pattaya takes its toll and we just want to sit back, relax and watch some great telly. However, deciding what to watch can be a bit of challenge! The options for watching our favourite shows have improved a great deal in recent years and we are no longer stuck with the local cable offering old movies, English speaking news channels and dreadfully produced local TV. Faster internet speed now mean that we can access pretty much all our favourite shows from around the world. Here we give you a brief lowdown on the free and paid streaming options that are available. FREE STREAMING Free streaming is available to everyone who has a laptop, mobile device, smart TV, Chromecast or media box. This is great for accessing literally thousands of options but it’s heavily reliant on fast internet connections. If you don’t have this, sadly the free-option may not quite cut the mustard. PAY TV SERVICES True TV is one of the most expensive but best options for movies and sports fans and is available via cable, satellite or internet. Netflix offers an excellent selection of international TV shows and movies. The selection of children’s programmes is a fantastic way to keep the young ones happy and quiet! Once again it is available across a range of devices making it ideal for families. Amazon Prime is perhaps a superior version of Netflix and offers plenty of content that isn’t available from other sources. Prime works well when streamed across multiple devices. Minix boxes, Chromecast and Apple TV offer an excellent selection of free and paid content. 24 Television Guide

ISLAND GUIDE

Sometimes we feel like we need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Pattaya and there are several islands nearby that are perfect for just that. KOH LARN Koh Larn is the closest island to Pattaya and is just a 45-minute ferry crossing from Bali Hai Pier. The island has several sandy beaches lapped by clear, azure waters with the most popular being Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach. Accommodation on the island varies from basic chalets to upmarket resorts. The Phonpenyom Restaurant offers excellent seafood and the Klom Klom bar is modern bar offering music and pool. Transportation on the island is via Songtaew or it is possible to hire motorbikes. KOH SAMET Koh Samet can be reached by ferry leaving from Ban Phe Pier which is around an hour’s drive from Pattaya. Samet has some of the best beaches in the region and the island has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife and water sports. Accommodation ranges from small beach front bungalows to luxury villas. Ban Ploi restaurant is a floating restaurant close by that is renowned for its seafood and other popular Thai dishes. Transportation is generally either by speedboat or Songtaew although motorbikes can be rented. KOH CHANG Koh Chang is around 4 hour’s drive away from Pattaya and is possibly the best-preserved tourist destination in Thailand. Comprising of 70% rainforest, the island has an abundance of sandy coves, beaches and wildlife. Koh Chang has a lively nightlife and excellent restaurants. 30 Island Guide

Fire displays started life as being an entertainment show that formed part of the famous Full Moon Parties that initially started on the beach at Haad-Rin in Koh Phangan. The parties took place, not surprisingly on the night of, or before or after the full moon. They are believed to have begun life back in 1983 when a group of around 20-30 travellers organised a party amongst themselves to celebrate the full moon. Over time, these parties have swelled in sized with anywhere between 5,000 and 30,000 people expected to attend any one party. TYPES OF FIRE DISPLAY There are lots of different elements to a fire show so you can expect to see fire eaters, spinning that, of course, involves chains or sticks with flames at one end, juggling of various item including burning batons, the throwing of fire which is certainly very impressive both for children and big children alike and various events where audience participation is expected. People are encouraged to join in, which may be seen by many as being unwise depending on levels of sensibility or as others might put it, common sense! One of the features that people frequently join in with is the fire rope. This became a feature of the fire shows around 20 years ago and essentially involves a skipping rope that is set on fire. The rope is controlled by 4 people who are familiar with the stunt and encourage members of the public to join in ‘skipping’. The rope will gradually get quicker and quicker, the speed of which will be determined by the ‘skilled’ operators controlling the rope. Reassuringly, buckets of sand are close at hand should something go wrong. Other events that require audience participation and the ring of fire, a slightly safer way of jumping through fire and fire limbo which involves contestants doing the limbo under a burning pole that would give health and safety 32 Cover Feature

There’s no actual need to join in yourself so don’t feel obliged to but it does add to the experience and could be something to tick off your bucket list or tell the grandchildren in years to come. WHERE TO FIND A FIRE SHOW NEAR PATTAYA Such has been the success of the fire parties in Koh Phangan they have begun to take place on other days and other islands at dates separate from the Full Moon parties. The islands of Koh Samet and Koh Chang which are within easy travelling distance of Pattaya host daily shows. The shows, although have their own take, follow a similar theme based around encouraging members of the public to join in with the performances although thankfully, they do seem to take participants welfare into greater account. The more local events are very much family orientated and organised in conjunction with the major restaurants. The shows start at the same time which makes it far easier to make plans, something that is very important if you have a young family. Arriving early is certainly advisable as you will get the better vantage points which helps to keep everyone interested. Kids are amazed with the fire shows and the Thai guys that perform the show are very experienced – it’s a real crowd pleaser. After the show has finished, it’s customary to leave a tip. The fire party of Koh Chang appears to have rapidly grown in popularity as has the island itself. You stay either at Paddy’s Palms or The White Elephant, both at White Sands beach. This is a popular resort style town on the island that has quickly become sort of a mini Pattaya although on a more moderate level and enjoys a close association with partying. However, there are still a number of quiet and largely unspoilt spots on the island that you can enjoy if the purpose of your trip was to get away from the neon lights. visit our website | www.pattaya.guide

GOLF GUIDE

Pattaya has an incredible selection of golf courses to meet all budgets and skill levels that you won’t be disappointed. There are 26 championship standard courses within 45 minutes of Pattaya, designed by the very best golf architects and designers. Clubhouse facilities are excellent with everything you might need and more, including great restaurants, swimming pools, massage facilities, shower and locker rooms. Quite simply, golfing in Pattaya is a match for anywhere in the world at a fraction of the cost with each course offering a fantastic experience for golfers of all abilities (with no course requiring a handicap card). So, whether you are a low handicap golfer, one who enjoys a challenge or a complete novice there is no better place to play than the courses around Pattaya. Green fees range from 750 baht during the week at Crystal Bay all the way upto 5000 baht for a weekend round at one of the top courses such as Siam Country Club. Caddy Fees range from 300 baht to 400 baht and carts are from 400 baht to 700 baht depending on the course you choose. There are now 38 golf groups in Pattaya which offer golf outings and tournaments on a regular basis, and players often get a better deal compared with booking direct with the golf course. You can find out more by visiting www.pattayasports.org or www.birdie.in.th - both these sites include handicap software so you can also track your golf scores and progress. Pattaya has plenty of driving ranges for you to practice your swing before you hit the fairways, and the number of golf shops has risen dramatically over the past decade, with golf proving popular with tourists, expats and Thais. There are very few places around the world as good as Pattaya for golfers. 36 Golf Guide

PROPERTY GUIDE

Pattaya is a beach resort with city status, with something for everyone. Year round tropical climate, there are hospitals, schools, shopping malls and supermarkets. Add in the low cost of living in Pattaya, the friendliness, warmth and hospitality of the Thai people, and this makes Pattaya City an extremely popular choice for a secondary home or retirement The last decade has seen a massive growth in the number of people, particularly from the West, investing in property overseas. Some buy principally as an investment, while others buy a holiday home; and some a permanent residence, having taken the decision to emigrate. Pattaya has become a very popular choice

When it comes to purchasing a property, there is a massive variety of houses and condominiums, in terms of size, price and quality, to choose between, which, in general terms, represent outstanding value for money, particularly when compared to the cost of real estate in the Western world. There are some major difference when buying property in Thailand so it is advisable to take advice from a knowledgeable and trustworthy real estate broker 44 Property Guide

VISA GUIDE

Thai Business Help has been helping thousands of expats and tourists from around the world with all types of visa applications, extensions and renewals since 2010. They’re Pattaya’s 1st choice when it comes to getting visas and work permits, with many business owners, and even local lawyers choosing them for their fast and professional service that no one else can match. They offer excellent advice when setting up a business in Pattaya, they’re renowned for the best value too, look at the prices in the advert opposite. Some customers price compare, and always come back to use their services. All too often, we hear of horror stories of customers who have chosen service providers who either deliberately mislead, or unknowingly offer poor advice which results in higher prices and add hidden costs, and worse of all, a service that takes weeks and months. Be careful of visa/business service providers that don’t have a website, or don’t advertise in magazines, or those that have been recently setup. This will save you a lot of hassle, time and money. Thai Business Help should be your 1st choice for visa services, business services, bookkeeping and accounting. You can rest assured you’ll get a good service at a great price, with everything delivered on time to your satisfaction. They also offer services that include company setup and company changes, work permit application and renewals, plus licence applications for bars, restaurants, guesthouses and hotels, and a host of many other services. So whatever services you need, from visa applications, extensions, renewals to work permits, business services to non-trading annual audits for your home. INSURANCE GUIDE

Insurance is an essential item when in Thailand, where all types of accidents happen daily. Whether you’re an expat or holidaymaker, you cannot ignore the importance of been well insured for all types of risk. From health & medical, to personal accident, to travel. In Thailand, a trip to the hospital costs money and you better have deep pockets if you’re not insured. A serious accident can cost hundreds of thousands of baht, and if you don’t have the money you’ll be sent to the nearest government hospital, where treatment is a life or death situation. You may own property over here, or a car or motorbike. Theft is a growing problem in Pattaya, and you want to ensure if the worst happens, you’ll be reimbursed quickly and fully. No insurance and your at the mercy of the local police catching the thieves, and hope that your items are not pawned. You maybe a restaurant owner, one of your staff accidentally spills hot soup on your customer. Your responsible, do you have liability cover? MARKETING GUIDE

Understanding the differences between online marketing and traditional marketing that deliver the best results. Over the past few years Facebook has become more popular with Pattaya business owners as a free alternative to paid marketing. Unfortunately, there are very few examples where businesses have been truly successful with just Facebook alone. Sure you can boost posts and set your targets but is it truly enough to capture all potential customers? The answer is no. Traditional marketing along with online marketing is the best method for the majority of businesses to succeed in Pattaya. Most businesses have a physical address, from a restaurant to an office, customers turn up and place orders. For this to happen, exterior signage is very important, but how many times have people been let down by poor signs in trying to find a place in Pattaya? But before customers come through the door, they will be seeking services maybe from an optician or a dentist? Many people search on Google and Facebook via their mobile, others prefer to ask their friends at the local bar. Plenty of tourists pick up the Pattaya Guide, some expats listen to the radio in the car. Whatever the medium, try and cover all options for the greatest reach. There are many ways to capture an audience, and if you have a good business model, you’ll use all available methods that suit your business and budget. Since 2006, OPEN Design Studio, a professional marketing company have had a great deal of experience advising many business owners the direction they should take with their marketing campaigns to increase brand awareness, and more importantly, sales. More than a decade later they’re still thriving. If you’re a new business owner, then contact the team at OPEN Design Studio and arrange a meeting to discuss your marketing strategy. info@opendesign.studio | 0890 160 077 | www.opendesign.studio 52 Marketing Guide
