Pattaya also known as Fun City is Thailand’s most popular resort only 90 minutes drive from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats and you’ll find many gogo bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and the odd ladyboy. Food is another highlight of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. GETTING AROUND

One of the wonderful things about Pattaya is the fact that getting around is so easy, either locally or nationally. Here are some of our tips for getting around when based in Pattaya.

LOCAL TRANSPORT BAHT BUS Baht buses are a fantastic way to get around the city and run along all major routes. The price for most journeys is 10 Baht although for longer distances this maybe 20 Baht. Off-route baht buses are expensive so check in advance. MOTORBIKE TAXI There are lots of motorbike taxis available around Pattaya and they are a fast and cheap way to get around once you overcome the initial fear! METERED TAXI Metered taxis are becoming more common in Pattaya although the drivers prefer not to use the meters and will ask for a steep fixed price for the journey. UBER & GRAB TAXI This method of transport is growing in popularity and is often cheaper than using standard metered taxis. However, there is some resistance from local taxi drivers so getting an available car can prove difficult but worth a try.

REGIONAL TRANSPORT BUS & COACH There are two main bus stations in Pattaya, one on North Pattaya Road and one on the southbound carriageway of Sukhumvit Road near the Pattaya Klang turn. From here you can travel to several destinations around the country with more destinations offered by other operators. (Continued) 8 getting around

MINIBUS There are lots of minibus services running between Pattaya and Bangkok as well as other areas. These are a faster alternative to the larger buses with prices being similar. Downside is they are known to drive dangerously. METERED & PRIVATE TAXI You can get metered and private taxis to most areas of the country. Some have fixed price lists whilst others prefer to negotiate a price. This is an excellent option if you are visiting places that arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t directly on a bus route. FERRY The Koh Larn ferry runs every hour daily which is convenient and well-priced. The Hua Hin passenger ferry is modern, takes under 3 hours although pricey. TRAIN Trains are not the faster way to get around but they are a great way to see the country. Pattaya Train station is in East Pattaya close to the Highway 7. PLANE Domestic and international flights are available from U-Tapao aka as Pattaya International which is 40 minutes drive, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang take 90 and 120 minutes drive respectively. Regional flights are good value.

OTHER OPTIONS CAR & MOTORBIKE RENTAL Having access to your own car or motorbike certainly gives you more freedom. There are lots of reputable vehicle rental companies in the city but make sure they offer first class rental insurance. BUYING A CAR OR BIKE Regular or long-term renters may find it cheaper to purchase their own vehicle. New vehicles are quite expensive but hold their value well and there are naturally the same potential issues as you would find anywhere else in the world when it comes to buying a second-hand vehicle. Obtaining credit can also be a problem. TRAVEL TIPS Common sense obviously plays a huge role in travelling around Pattaya and Thailand. Drink driving is naturally a big no-no but there are plenty of occasions where travel can be particularly difficult. Friday afternoons always see a large increase in the volume of traffic as too do Public Holidays and weekends. Allowing plenty of time for travel is advisable as accidents are holdups are common. SHOPPING GUIDE

Pattaya has numerous large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but do not expect to find variety as most shops are selling the same things. Pattaya actually has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok for variety and volume of shops but it is trying with several new shopping centres opening in recent years, and there’s more to come.

Bargaining is a way of life here but don’t worry if you don’t know your Thai numbers as most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule what ever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay. The options for watching our favourite shows have improved a great deal in recent years and we are no longer stuck with the local cable offering old movies, English speaking news channels and dreadfully produced local TV. Faster internet speed now mean that we can access pretty much all our favourite shows from around the world. Here we give you a brief lowdown on the free and paid streaming options that are available. FREE STREAMING Free streaming is available to everyone who has a laptop, mobile device, smart TV, Chromecast or media box. This is great for accessing literally thousands of options but it’s heavily reliant on fast internet connections. If you don’t have this, sadly the free-option may not quite cut the mustard. PAY TV SERVICES True TV is one of the most expensive but best options for movies and sports fans and is available via cable, satellite or internet.Netflix offers an excellent selection of international TV shows and movies. The selection of children’s programmes is a fantastic way to keep the young ones happy and quiet! Once again it is available across a range of devices making it ideal for families. Amazon Prime is perhaps a superior version of Netflix and offers plenty of content that isn’t available from other sources. Prime works well when streamed across multiple devices. 02 ROYAL BRITISH LEGION QUARTERLY MEETING VENUE RETOX OUTBACK BAR DATE 9 JUNE This event is open to members and non-members, you don’t need to be ex-services to show you care and volunteers are always welcome. Join us for some light refreshments and an informal chat. The event starts from 2pm.

03 TIGER BALM TRIAL HALF MARATHON VENUE HORSESHOE POINT DATE 10 JUNE This event attracts both local and national competitors from a large field of experienced and novice athletes. The race gets underway at 5:00am so make sure you turn up in plenty of time to confirm your registration.

04 VOLLEYBALL WITH DECATHLON VENUE JOMTIEN BEACH DATE 14 JUNE If you love volleyball, then this is the event for you and will be taking place throughout the day at the stadium on Jomtien Beach. Several teams of international competitors will be taking part in this fun tournament. 20 Events Guide

05 RUSSIA 2018 WORLD CUP VENUE VARIOUS VENUES IN PATTAYA DATE 14 JUNE TO 15 JULY The FIFA football World Cup is upon us this year with the tournament being held in Russia. The games will be shown in bars and restaurants across the city and are sure to appeal to wide audience and viewers of all nationalities. 06 WALK/RUN FOR CHARITY PATTAYA BEACH VENUE PATTAYA BEACH DATE 16 JUNE This event gets underway from Central Festival Shopping Mall on Pattaya Beach Road at 5.30pm and there will be four races that will be 1.5km, 3km, 6km and 10km in distance. Not only is this event designed to keep you in trim, but all the proceeds go to good causes with entry just 400 Thai Baht. The turnout is expected to be quite high and you can enjoy the sunset whilst either walking or running along Pattaya Beach.

07 WORLD BEACH YOGA 2018 VENUE CENTRAL FESTIVAL DATE 21 JUNE Commencing at 4pm outside Central Festival on Pattaya Beach Road will be the World Beach Yoga 2018 event where everyone is welcome to come and try their hand at Yoga. 08 THIRSTY THURSDAY NETWORKING VENUE PINNACLE BEACH RESORT DATE 21 JUNE The travel industry professionals are once again holding their monthly party and this time it will take place at the Pinnacle Beach Resort in Na Jomtien. Sometimes we feel like we need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Pattaya and there are several islands nearby that are perfect for just that. KOH LARN Koh Larn is the closest island to Pattaya and is just a 45-minute ferry crossing from Bali Hai Pier. The island has several sandy beaches lapped by clear, azure waters with the most popular being Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach. Accommodation on the island varies from basic chalets to upmarket resorts. The Phonpenyom Restaurant offers excellent seafood and the Klom Klom bar is modern bar offering music and pool. Transportation on the island is via Songtaew or it is possible to hire motorbikes. KOH SAMET Koh Samet can be reached by ferry leaving from Ban Phe Pier which is around an hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive from Pattaya. Samet has some of the best beaches in the region and the island has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife and water sports. Accommodation ranges from small beach front bungalows to luxury villas. Ban Ploi restaurant is a floating restaurant close by that is renowned for its seafood and other popular Thai dishes. Transportation is generally either by speedboat or Songtaew although motorbikes can be rented. KOH CHANG Koh Chang is around 4 hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive away from Pattaya and is possibly the best-preserved tourist destination in Thailand. Comprising of 70% rainforest, the island has an abundance of sandy coves, beaches and wildlife. Koh Chang has a lively nightlife and excellent restaurants. RUSSIA 2018 WORLD CUP REVIEW

Well, the World Cup is upon starting on 14 June with the opening game, Russia versus Saudi Arabia being held at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. England begin their campaign on 19th June against Tunisia in Volgograd, Germany play Mexico on 17th June, France and Australia meet on 16th June, and the ever popular Brazilians take on Switzerland on 18th June. The bookies seem to be favouring the teams that are there or thereabouts in all competitions. Brazil are the favourites before a ball has been kicked closely followed by Germany, Spain and France. England, under Gareth Southgate taking charge of the team for the first time in a major competition, are 16/1 with most bookmakers. Unusually, the feeling back in England seems calm rather than the usual euphoria and then disappointment. The knockout phase begins on 30th June with the quarter finals being held on the 6th and 7th July, the semis on the 10th and 11th July and the third and forth place decider, something of an anti-climax being held on 14th July. The final will be held in National Stadium in Moscow (Luzhniki Stadium) on 15th July with a kick-off time of 10pm (Thai time) scheduled. Everyone will be hoping that their team manages to the latter stages with national pride at stake. The tickets for games have been selling surprisingly slowly to date and this is for a variety of reasons which there is no need to go into. However, the TV audiences around the world are bound to be high with viewers prepared to stay up or wake up throughout the night to watch their teams play. The atmosphere and excitement are building and most canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait for the games to get underway.

If you are here in Pattaya for the World Cup then don’t worry, the games are being broadcast live so you can watch them in the comfort of your own home. However, if like most of us you prefer to watch the games in a bar amongst like-minded people, then you will have plenty of options throughout the city and East Pattaya. The coverage will be uninterrupted, except by pretty girls serving you beer – so it isn’t that bad after all! Of course, you may want a guide to the best places that you can watch the games so we have compiled a list of places that we recommend for viewing. Firstly, in Central Pattaya you have the old favourites of the Retox Bars and iRover that have numerous TVs where you will get an uninterrupted viewing spot. Then you have the Sportsman and Robin’s Nest where you can enjoy some excellent food whilst watching the football. If you want to watch the games in the company of some lovely ladies in Central Pattaya then you have options such as Double Kiss, where you could enjoy a game of pool before or after, Harry’s Bar or Mookky Bar. Of course, this doesn’t mean that these bars don’t have anything else to offer whilst you are cheering on England – or any other team for that matter, it’s just that you have some nice scenery! Moving towards the Darkside aka East Pattaya which is the other side of the Sukhumvit Road for those that don’t know, there are some great options including Sunny’s Restaurant, Murphy’s Irish Pub, The Loft Resort or The Loft Pub, and Retox Outback. These places will be showing the games and are ideal spots for those late night games where travelling into the city from your home might be a bit of a bind. Families are welcome in many of these bars so why not bring along the youngsters to get into the spirit of things? The Loft also offer a free minibus service, they can pick you up and drop you off, just call 0932 129 969 to book in advance. Naturally, some of you may not live centrally or in East Pattaya but Jomtien or South Pattaya so you may be looking for something a little closer to home. Don’t worry, we can recommend some options for you too! The Lion Pub is a great sporting pub and is spacious with plenty of TVs. Hemingway’s is also a great place for viewing with excellent food – all great places for viewing games and getting behind your country. We sincerely hope that you enjoy the World Cup and whichever team you are following is successful. Along with a few excellent restaurants and the odd street performer, Walking Street has everything in terms of nightlife. LK Metro just off Soi Buakhao is another of Pattaya’s gems.
