Pattaya also known as Fun City is Thailand’s most popular resort only 90 minutes drive from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats and you’ll find many gogo bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and the odd ladyboy. Food is another highlight of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. Cajun, Chinese, Indian, Italian, English, French, Vietnamese, German, Russian and more. Today Pattaya attracts annually more then a million tourists from all over the world. GETTING AROUND

One of the wonderful things about Pattaya is the fact that getting around is so easy, either locally or nationally. Here are some of our tips for getting around when based in Pattaya.

LOCAL TRANSPORT BAHT BUS Baht buses are a fantastic way to get around the city and run along all major routes. The price for most journeys is 10 Baht although for longer distances this maybe 20 Baht. Off-route baht buses are expensive so check in advance. MOTORBIKE TAXI There are lots of motorbike taxis available around Pattaya and they are a fast and cheap way to get around once you overcome the initial fear! METERED TAXI Metered taxis are becoming more common in Pattaya although the drivers prefer not to use the meters and will ask for a steep fixed price for the journey. UBER & GRAB TAXI This method of transport is growing in popularity and is often cheaper than using standard metered taxis. However, there is some resistance from local taxi drivers so getting an available car can prove difficult but worth a try.

REGIONAL TRANSPORT BUS & COACH There are two main bus stations in Pattaya, one on North Pattaya Road and one on the southbound carriageway of Sukhumvit Road near the Pattaya Klang turn. From here you can travel to several destinations around the country with more destinations offered by other operators. (Continued) 8 getting around

MINIBUS There are lots of minibus services running between Pattaya and Bangkok as well as other areas. These are a faster alternative to the larger buses with prices being similar. Downside is they are known to drive dangerously. METERED & PRIVATE TAXI You can get metered and private taxis to most areas of the country. Some have fixed price lists whilst others prefer to negotiate a price. This is an excellent option if you are visiting places that arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t directly on a bus route. FERRY The Koh Larn ferry runs every hour daily which is convenient and well-priced. The Hua Hin passenger ferry is modern, takes under 3 hours although pricey. TRAIN Trains are not the faster way to get around but they are a great way to see the country. Pattaya Train station is in East Pattaya close to the Highway 7. PLANE Domestic and international flights are available from U-Tapao aka as Pattaya International which is 40 minutes drive, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang take 90 and 120 minutes drive respectively. Regional flights are good value.

OTHER OPTIONS CAR & MOTORBIKE RENTAL Having access to your own car or motorbike certainly gives you more freedom. There are lots of reputable vehicle rental companies in the city but make sure they offer first class rental insurance. BUYING A CAR OR BIKE Regular or long-term renters may find it cheaper to purchase their own vehicle. New vehicles are quite expensive but hold their value well and there are naturally the same potential issues as you would find anywhere else in the world when it comes to buying a second-hand vehicle. Obtaining credit can also be a problem. TRAVEL TIPS Common sense obviously plays a huge role in travelling around Pattaya and Thailand. Drink driving is naturally a big no-no but there are plenty of occasions where travel can be particularly difficult. Friday afternoons always see a large increase in the volume of traffic as too do Public Holidays and weekends. Allowing plenty of time for travel is advisable as accidents are holdups are common. 10 getting around

SHOPPING GUIDE

Pattaya has large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Regardless of what you are looking for in Pattaya, you will be able to find it but don’t expect an abundance of shops all selling different things. In reality, you can expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but the city has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok. The major malls are Central Pattaya Beach, Royal Garden Plaza, Central Marina, and Harbor Mall which has excellent facilities for kids that can keep them occupied for an entire weekend. King Power mall is purely for holiday makers. Terminal 21 mall and hotel will be located on North Pattaya Road next to the Dolphin Roundabout which is due to open at the end of 2018. Thepprasit Night Market opens Friday to Sunday and is the largest night market in the region, it’s definitely a must see for all tourists. There are also smaller markets open day and night selling clothes to hand made crafts Like with many other parts of Asia, bargaining is a way of life and often something that feels quite alien to Europeans and North Americans. Don’t let a small matter like not knowing your Thai numbers put you off either, most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule whatever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Always remember to smile and make eye contact. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay. Losing face in Thailand or losing your temper for that matter are big no-no’s so always keep this in mind if you are looking to pick up a bargain. 18 Shopping Guide

Sometimes the hectic life of Pattaya takes its toll and we just want to sit back, relax and watch some great telly. However, deciding what to watch can be a bit of challenge! The options for watching our favourite shows have improved a great deal in recent years and we are no longer stuck with the local cable offering old movies, English speaking news channels and dreadfully produced local TV. Faster internet speed now mean that we can access pretty much all our favourite shows from around the world. Here we give you a brief lowdown on the free and paid streaming options that are available. FREE STREAMING Free streaming is available to everyone who has a laptop, mobile device, smart TV, Chromecast or media box. This is great for accessing literally thousands of options but it’s heavily reliant on fast internet connections. If you don’t have this, sadly the free-option may not quite cut the mustard. PAY TV SERVICES True TV is one of the most expensive but best options for movies and sports fans and is available via cable, satellite or internet. Netflix offers an excellent selection of international TV shows and movies. The selection of children’s programmes is a fantastic way to keep the young ones happy and quiet! Once again it is available across a range of devices making it ideal for families. Amazon Prime is perhaps a superior version of Netflix and offers plenty of content that isn’t available from other sources. Prime works well when streamed across multiple devices. All money that is raised from the event will go to the Royal British Legion, an organisation that helps retired servicemen both back in the UK and around the world. 03 ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE (EPL) SEASON VENUE VARIOUS DATE 11 AUGUST The long awaited return of the EPL takes place on 11 August. Many players will be returning to action after featuring at this summer’s World Cup in Russia. Manchester United play Leicester City in the first game of the new season kicking off at 2am local time. Games across the weekend and indeed the season will be shown at various venues across Pattaya.

04 KOLOUR BEACHSIDE PARTY VENUE A-ONE RESORT, PATTAYA BEACH DATE 18 AUGUST Returning to the A-One Hotel for another of their Ibiza style beach club parties. Last year’s events gained rave reviews and the team are hoping to go one better this time around. The event will feature some of Bangkok’s best known local and underground artists. There will be pool games and rather uniquely, the dancefloor will be in the middle of the swimming pool.

05 SPRC RUN FOR YOU VENUE SATTAHIP DATE 19 AUGUST We know that there are lots of joggers and runners out their so we have decided to include this one just for you. The run has been organised by the SPRC Running Club and welcomes athletes from around the area. Many of the competitors will have entered last months Pattaya Marathon and will be looking to better their times. The race gets underway around 6am and is due to be completed by 9am

06 X30 SOUTHEAST ASIA 2018 VENUE BIRA CIRCUIT DATE 25 AUGUST The Bira Circuit will once again be holding a major karting championship, this time it will be X30 series. Cadets, Juniors, Seniors, Rookies, Veterans, Shifters and Masters will feature in races that will all include the best drivers in Southeast Asia in every class. The event always manages to get spectators off their seats with some high-octane performances around the challenging track. This is a great family day out.

07 THAILAND SUPER SERIES VENUE BIRA CIRCUIT DATE 31 AUGUST – 2 SEPTEMBER The Bira International Circuit will be experiencing a busy month in August with yet another race weekend taking place. There will be seven major races taking place over the three days including Thailand Super Pickup and Thailand Touring Cars. Sometimes we feel like we need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Pattaya and there are several islands nearby that are perfect for just that. KOH LARN Koh Larn is the closest island to Pattaya and is just a 45-minute ferry crossing from Bali Hai Pier. The island has several sandy beaches lapped by clear, azure waters with the most popular being Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach. Accommodation on the island varies from basic chalets to upmarket resorts. The Phonpenyom Restaurant offers excellent seafood and the Klom Klom bar is modern bar offering music and pool. Transportation on the island is via Songtaew or it is possible to hire motorbikes. KOH SAMET Koh Samet can be reached by ferry leaving from Ban Phe Pier which is around an hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive from Pattaya. Samet has some of the best beaches in the region and the island has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife and water sports. Accommodation ranges from small beach front bungalows to luxury villas. Ban Ploi restaurant is a floating restaurant close by that is renowned for its seafood and other popular Thai dishes. Transportation is generally either by speedboat or Songtaew although motorbikes can be rented. KOH CHANG Koh Chang is around 4 hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive away from Pattaya and is possibly the best-preserved tourist destination in Thailand. Comprising of 70% rainforest, the island has an abundance of sandy coves, beaches and wildlife. Koh Chang has a lively nightlife and excellent restaurants. 28 Island Guide

Discover the best beaches within one hour of Pattaya. Pattaya is a fantastic place to live and has so many different things to offer residents and tourists alike. There is an abundance of bars, quality restaurants as well as numerous activities to take part in. However, one of the things that often gets overlooked by expats at least is the excellent beaches that can be found in and around the city. Here, we have just seven of the best beaches that are all within an hour of downtown Pattaya. COZY BEACH Cozy Beach is arguably the best beach within Pattaya and can be found in the Pratamnak area. The beach is in a small bay with steps down the hillside for access. This is a tranquil spot that is largely unspoilt with visitors experiencing fewer beach sellers than they would find in other locations. The waters are far cleaner than at Pattaya Beach with very few speedboats causing any sort of disturbance. This is a fantastic place to relax and unwind. WONGAMAT BEACH Located at the northern end of Pattaya and is a well-maintained beach which is overlooked by some of the top hotels and condominiums in the area. Overall, the beach is fairly quiet and you can find some excellent beachfront restaurants in the area such as the Glasshouse Wongamat and Surf and Turf. The waters are fairly clean especially if you head to the most northerly end. JOMTIEN BEACH Located south of Pattaya, Jomtien Beach offers a long stretch of golden sand starting at Dong Tan Beach to the north to almost Na Jomtien in the south. The beach is lined with palm trees that provide excellent shade from the fierce sun. Water sports are available with the beach being well-maintained and clean. NA JOMTIEN Na Jomtien is the area to the south immediately after Jomtien. There are plenty of similarities between Na Jomtien and Bang Saray such as the fact that the sea is much cleaner than in the city and that there is plenty of natural shade. There are a number of restaurants on the beachfront that make an ideal location to take in the fantastic sunset with a loved one. BANG SARAY Bang Saray can be found to the south of Jomtien and is a village that is increasing in size and popularity on an annual basis. Luckily, the beaches have remained serene and lined with mature palm trees. The waters are very clean and the sand is golden making it almost the picture postcard setting. Close by you will find a wide selection of excellent restaurants that are fairly priced. KOH LARN If you look across the bay you will see a large island known as Koh Larn. The island can be reached by speedboat or ferry and is hugely popular with tourists due to its excellent beaches. There are seven beaches on the island but Samae and Tawaen Beach are the ones that are the most popular. The waters are clear, warm and fairly shallow with gentle shelving making it safe for young children. A selection of restaurants and shops available. BANG SAEN Bang Saen Beach is 50km north of Pattaya City. There is plenty of green coastal vegetation surrounding the beach that helps to create a very relaxing ambience. Bang Saen is popular with Thai nationals and you will find it possible to rent loungers and umbrellas. You can also rent bikes and tandem bikes to cycle along the esplanade. At the northern end of the beach is Laem Taen cape which is a public park that is a great place for taking a gentle stroll.
