RESTAURANT REVIEW

Hemingway’s has quickly become one of the best pubs and restaurants not in Jomtien but Pattaya as a whole. The popular restaurant & bar opened in February 2017, and since then it has grown from strength to strength. Set in a great location in Jomtien, it’s easy to get to via baht bus, on foot or by car with plenty of parking available. The place is well set out and has friendly and helpful staff. Pool and other bars games are available and the establishment shows all live sports on the numerous TV’s that are to be found. It is noticeable how many expats are in attendance all of whom mix with the many tourists of all nationalities. Hemingway’s hold a free raffle every two weeks that effectively rewards loyalty. Not surprisingly this is always well received, especially when you consider that 15,000 Baht of food and drink vouchers are up for grabs. The outdoor area is another popular place to sit and relax with groups enjoying the breeze along with their cool beers and food. Others enjoy sitting their alone reading a book or just doing a spot of people watching. It easy to appreciate why the place does well both during the afternoon as well as the evenings. During the week, Hemingway’s has several promotions to draw customers in such as Steaks on Monday, a particular favourite for many people with superbly cooked Australian steak available for just 395 Thai Baht. The Quiz Night is also on Monday from 8pm so you can combine the two and have a fantastic evening. They really do offer a great selection of daily specials that are well priced. The food and drinks menu prices are very fairly priced and represent excellent value for money. The choice of food is good, well presented and very consistent, all signs of a quality venue. It is hard to find any criticism of Hemingway’s and the place just seems to get better and better each time you visit. Visit facebook.com/hemingwaysjomtien for more information 4 Restaurant Review

An inside interview into Pattaya’s Eating Out industry Peter Hutchinson from Robin’s Nest gives his answers to our questions on what it’s like to run a restaurant in a competitive place like Pattaya Q When did you start at Robin’s Nest? A Almost three years now, started at the Nest in November 2015. Q Tell us about yourself? A I’m from Brisbane Australia, single and have been since I moved here. I like golf and the Thai caddies, social drinking, and Thai dancers. Q Best day of the week? A Wednesday – my day off and I get to sleep in! Q Biggest spenders? A We don’t really have big spenders as such. We have a busy lunchtime and dinner guests but the spend is nearly always the same. Q Your favourite dish? A Sizzling Mexican chicken or the steak night with a whole roasted garlic. Q Most popular items? A Lasagne special out sells everything and it’s only on for 2 days a week. Q Biggest challenges? A Thai working culture. It has taken me a long time to build a team mentality with my staff. To teach them working together can generate better service and more tips than each staff member chasing one personal tip. Q Best part of the day? A The quiet time in the afternoon from 4:00pm to 6:30pm where I can catch up on work or have a sneaky afternoon break at the coffee shop. Q Sum up your restaurant in 3 words A Relaxing, Friendly, Value. 12 Under the hood

COVER FEATURE

The story goes that John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich, an English aristocrat invented the sandwich back in 1762 largely due to his fondness for late night gambling. It is believed that during a rather infamous gambling session he instructed his chef to prepare food that allowed him to continue gambling unobstructed. The chef obeyed his lordship’s request and created what would now be known as the ‘sandwich’, slices of meat nestled between two slices of bread. The real creator, of course, was the chef but his name has now been lost to history. As time has passed, the sandwich has evolved in terms of fillings but hardly altered from the original form back in 1762. The Earl could today enjoy his gambling whilst tucking into something not dissimilar to what he enjoyed then and maybe his chef would be able to create something new and exciting to cater for his boss’ requirements. Today the sandwich is as popular now as it has ever been with numerous variations available. Those who prefer something more traditional may opt of a cheese and ham sandwich and those feeling adventurous can create anything they please. Almost anything lends itself to being a sandwich filling and as a general rule, if it tastes good and is laid between two slices of bread it can become the perfect sandwich for you. There a few basic ingredients that you need for making your own. Firstly, quality bread is an absolute must otherwise the constituents can be seriously let down. The Cabin Bakery is a great place to pick up fine, freshly baked bread that makes the ideal sandwich. Next, any connoisseur will tell you that margarine should never go anywhere near a sandwich! Butter is the only real option and you don’t get much better than Lurpak, available in Pattaya at Siamburi’s or Foodmart. The main part of any sandwich is the ingredients but as we have mentioned there are so many to choose from. Cheese is a favourite for most and goes well 14 Cover Feature

with almost any other filling. Of course, extras such as Branston Pickle, Hellman’s Mayonnaise and Colman’s Mustard are also essential in any cupboard. You can pick up these type of condiments locally in Pattaya at Siamburi’s or Foodmart, meaning that you no longer have to bring them from home or wait for friends and relatives to come. You could also go online and order from NoQ.co.th Meats such as hams, beef and chicken that are designed as sandwich fillings are available at many places in town but one of the best options are AKA Traders. Along with having the usual favourites they also have other slightly more unusual cured and seasoned meats that can really bring your sandwich to life. In reality, quality products and a good imagination are all that you require to make your own variation to suit your taste buds. Sometimes making our own sandwiches can seem like a bit of an effort, especially if you don’t have the right ingredients, or perhaps we are lacking in creativity and we just want someone to rustle something up on our behalf. Great sandwiches are available at almost every venue in town but special shouts should go out for the Philly Cheese Sub at the Loft Resort at Mabprachan, the various Retox venues around Pattaya and Tequila Reef in Soi 7 Beach Road. Quality Roast beef sandwiches with topping such as horseradish or mustard can be harder to find but luckily the Sportsman has come to our rescue here. If you are looking for a hearty Ploughman’s Sunny’s or Hemingway’s offer the complete works that are enough to satisfy even the largest of appetites. If you are looking to get something ‘on the go’ Siamburi’s and Foodmart have ready-made deli sandwiches that you can quickly pick up on your travels. One thing is for sure, if you are looking to create something yourself, eat on the move or sit down and enjoy, Pattaya has plenty of options for everyone. Fantasising about the sandwich from ‘back home’ is now something left to history, just like the Earl of Sandwich’s chef! visit our website | www.pattaya.guide

PUB & BAR DINING

With thousands of expats and foreign tourists in Pattaya it is no surprise to find lots of pubs and bars. Most pubs will have all the live sports you could hope for and unlike many parts of the world there is no limit to the amount of sport displayed at any one time so expect to find lots of TV’s when you enter. Food in these establishments is often very well priced, excellent quality and large portions. If you don’t fancy the local Thai food then the pubs and bars are for you. It doesn’t matter what nationality you are, the pubs of Pattaya are welcoming places and everyone will be made to feel welcome regardless of it is their first visit or their hundredth. EXPAT GROCERIES

Now more than ever, Pattaya has a fantastic range of expat groceries from chocolates to cheese and so much more. When the Pattaya Guide started way back in 2004 the options when it came to buying expat groceries and the items that we are more familiar with, was somewhat limited. We all used to be waiting for friends and family to be coming from ‘home’ armed with suitcases full of tinned salmon, Branston Pickle and the chocolates that we all know and love. Thankfully, that has all changed massively in the last few years with lots of shops around the city stocking a wide variety of expat groceries. In fact, we are lucky that with the advent of the internet we no longer have to leave our homes to find these products, simple searches online usually provide the answers that you need and many offer delivery direct to your door. There will be many people in and around the city who would crave English sausages and bacon only to have to make do with the local substitutes which fall some way short of the mark. Luckily, bacon, sausage and even black pudding have once again formed part of the diet of many British expats thanks to the ease and convenience that these products can now be purchased. It isn’t just the foods from the UK that now fill our stores, you only have to look around and see many products from across Europe, North America and Australia. In fact, every nationality is now well catered for when it comes to all foodstuff and groceries that they would expect to find in any supermarket back in their home. The options are plentiful and you certainly won’t be left craving for tinned products, raw meats and those sweets that we fancy once in a while! 20 Expat Groceries
