Now more than ever, Pattaya has a fantastic range of expat groceries from chocolates to cheese and so much more.

When the Pattaya Guide started way back in 2004 the options when it came to buying expat groceries and the items that we are more familiar with, was somewhat limited.

We all used to be waiting for friends and family to be coming from ‘home’ armed with suitcases full of tinned salmon, Branston Pickle and the chocolates that we all know and love.

Thankfully, that has all changed massively in the last few years with lots of shops around the city stocking a wide variety of expat groceries. In fact, we are lucky that with the advent of the internet we no longer have to leave our homes to find these products, simple searches online usually provide the answers that you need and many offer delivery direct to your door.

There will be many people in and around the city who would crave English sausages and bacon only to have to make do with the local substitutes which fall some way short of the mark.

Luckily, bacon, sausage and even black pudding have once again formed part of the diet of many British expats thanks to the ease and convenience that these products can now be purchased.

It isn’t just the foods from the UK that now fill our stores, you only have to look around and see many products from across Europe, North America and Australia. In fact, every nationality is now well catered for when it comes to all foodstuff and groceries that they would expect to find in any supermarket back in their home.

The options are plentiful and you certainly won’t be left craving for tinned products, raw meats and those sweets that we fancy once in a while!

Pattaya is renowned for a lot of things, but a great burger wasn’t one of them, now there are more choices than ever.

There is nothing better than tucking into a succulent, juicy burger, but just what exactly makes a great burger? Well, a lot of that is down to personal choice, some prefer the more traditional burger or cheeseburger whilst others prefer something just that little bit more adventurous.

However, the common denominator with all, is that the patty is made from quality meat and ingredients, has just the right amount of seasoning and has been cooked to perfection. It’s not too much to ask, is it?

Here in Pattaya, many people will tell you where to find the perfect burger and that goes for the traditional and not so traditional varieties. Some bars offer their own particular slant, others offer some excellent promotions.

The Sportsman, Pattaya Beach Soi 13 is a perfect example, whilst others are perhaps famed for their burgers. Of course, the next big debate is what the burger should be served with traditional British chips or French fries, fresh salad or coleslaw, the options, if you so wish, can be endless.

Some people prefer to enjoy their burger as lunchtime or evening meal whilst others prefer them as late night snack to soak up some of the alcohol that has been consumed earlier in the evening.

So, where are the best places that you can address these needs in Pattaya?

In all honesty, you won’t have to travel too far to find a great burger around town. As you will no doubt be aware, Pattaya has some fantastic eating joints and when it comes to burgers, the choice is just as good.

If you are in Jomtien you have places such as Big Kahuna, offering terrific Hawaiian style burgers, Pirate Bay Cafe for an authentic American burger while Hemingways offers a traditional style British burger with cheese and bacon.

If you are out and about in the Soi LK Metro and Soi Buakhao area then you have the Licenced to Grill at Retox Lengkee, Great American Sandwich, i-rovers, all of which offer superb burgers which are like the rest of their food - huge! If size is important to you and you are in Central Pattaya, these are two great options.

If you are in East Pattaya then Sunny’s offer a juicy lamb or beef gourmet burger while Retox@Outback make a monster burger for the seriously starving.

If after a long night out, you are looking to ‘just fill a hole’ but still want quality then once again somewhere like i-rovers or retox is an option as it is open 24 hours a day. There are a number of small stalls around the city too that could also be a late night option but if they offer genuinely great burgers, is maybe something that is up for debate.

Of course, there will times when going out for a burger just seems like too much effort. In this situation, you’ll find the delivery services such as Door 2 Door, Nick The Pizza, and Retox2u are the ideal options. All delivering great burgers from many of the places mentioned direct to your doorstep.

Retox on the Darkside has recently moved to a new location in partnership with the well known Outback Bar. Located on Soi Siam Country Club Road (8km from Sukhumvit Road) just before Lake Mabprachan, Retox@Outback offer a spacious, comfortable and relaxing outdoor dining area plus an air-conditioned lounge. It’s family friendly with an outdoor child play area and also has ample parking available. With plenty of staff, this makes for a very popular sports bar and restaurant in the vicinity.

The newly revamped menu combines the well known quality Retox favourites along with the best of Outback fare. Quality ingredients and skilled kitchen staff prepare some of the best English style meals east of Sukhumvit.

Authentic British fish and chips with cod or haddock served with hand-cut chips and mushy peas is a big favourite, and the home-made pies are also delicious.

There are great value daily specials, for example: the curry on Wednesdays could be chicken tikka masala with naan bread, poppadoms and a free glass of San Miguel beer, all for the unbeatable price of 149 Thai Baht.

Outback favourites such as the lamb shank have remained on the menu as well as an expanded range of lite bites for those not wanting a full meal. The Sunday carvery is served from 12pm with the ever popular traditional roast dinner.

Nine cold draft beers and ciders are available from 85 Thai baht as well as the usual wide range of other drinks you would expect from a Retox sports bar.

You can then relax and watch your favourite sport on one of their 15 large flat screen TV’s or the huge wall projector in the aircon lounge. They pride themselves on having the largest range of sports available and offer a wider coverage than other sports bars in East Pattaya.

A I’ve been a chef for 32 years, I can do Italian, French, Chinese UK & Indian cuisine. I decided to broaden my career by doing the chefs circuit where I worked alongside some of the best chefs in the world such as Michel Roux and many more where I learned discipline and other important aspects.

Q Best day of the week?

A My day off! I unwind with a game of golf after a busy week in the kitchen.
