RESTAURANT REVIEW

The Robin Hood Tavern at The Avenue is back to it’s very best after recently changing management and it’s buzzing.

Having opened in February 2017 under the Retox Group, it was an instant hit, however it changed management and things started to slide. Now with a new owner and Retox Group to assist, things have turned around quickly.

The new menu offers generous portions of British, European and Thai cuisines packed with flavour at prices that will have you coming back for more. Whether it be bar snacks, the all day breakfast or any of the dishes from the full menu, your taste buds will confirm the quality, all overseen by their European chef.

A large group of us with young kids arrived around 1pm, the staff quickly rearranged tables to get us all seated, one girl brought crayons and colouring paper to keep the kids busy. Drinks arrived quickly, the ladies chose a variety of Thai dishes while the men opted for the all-you-can-eat carvery which was delicious. They also have plated options, regular 199 Baht, large 299 Baht and the three course carvery 395 Baht. Kids under 8 eat free with paying adult.

To quench your thirst you can choose from a selection of 15 draft imported beers and ciders as well as all of your local favourites. For those that enjoy a glass of wine with their meal, there are some really well priced imported wines.

Sporting entertainment is what a sports pub is all about. 25 big screen TVs, plus Pattaya’s biggest indoor screen in any sports pub showing all English Premier League matches as well as all major sporting events around the globe.

THAI COOKING GUIDE

Thai This month’s recipe is the popular Thai Red Curry Chicken that’s easy to cook even for the culinary challenged.

SERVING SUGGESTION Serving for four persons

Preparation Time: 4 hours

INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 tablespoon fish sauce

1kg chicken thigh fillets, cut in half

1 tablespoon brown sugar

114g can Thai red curry paste

140ml can coconut milk

1 cup chicken stock

1/3 cup basil leaves

150g fresh shiitake mushrooms, halved

Steamed rice to serve

230g can sliced bamboo shoots METHOD Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook chicken, in batches, for 1 to 2 minutes each side or until golden. Transfer to slow cooker. Reduce frying pan heat to low. Add remaining oil to pan. Add curry paste and cook, stirring, for 1 to 2 minutes or until aromatic. Add stock and stir until curry paste has dissolved. Add mushroom and bamboo shoots. Pour mixture over chicken and stir to combine. Cover and cook on high for 3 1/2 hours.

Combine fish sauce, sugar and coconut milk in a jug. Stir into curry. Cover and cook on high for a further 30 minutes. Stir in basil. Serve over rice.

If you eat meat, you probably love steak. We look into what cut, seasoning and cooking technique are the best.

Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, US and Japan are associated with producing the highest quality steak and indeed some of the top restaurants in Pattaya such as Café des Amis are known to import the very best meats from these countries.

Of course, for centuries we have strived to achieve the perfect steak but with different cooking techniques such as pan-seared, flame-grilled and roasted being options, this is often down to the chef’s preference. There are many ways to make an exceptional steak. One classic approach is to sear the meat on the stove top and then finish cooking in the oven.

Seasoning can improve an average steak but is not be required on a quality cut.

Dry-aging is basically a controlled decomposition of the meat, which sounds kind of gross, but results in a meat that is more flavourful and more tender. The thing to remember is dry-aged steak offers a different taste experience to fresh steak, with or without any seasoning, and how it’s cooked will determine it’s overall quality.

In addition, the steak can be cooked from anything from blue to well done with many connoisseurs believing that anything more than rare is ruining the meat.

Each one of us has our own idea of what makes a perfect steak.

SIRLOIN STEAK Sirloin, tenderloin and top sirloin are actually different cuts of meat but often referred to as ‘sirloin’ in restaurants. Top sirloin is regarded as being the prime cut. This meat is taken from towards the top and rear of the cow and is renowned for its tenderness. This is an extremely popular choice for meat lovers and is best cooked rare to retain the flavour although the choice is yours.

Steak & Co. is one of Pattaya’s most popular steak houses and is centrally located on Soi Lengkee, they serve excellent sirloin steaks as well as other great steaks.

RIB-EYE Rib-eye is a steak that is well-known for its marbling which makes it a juicy and very tasty cut. It is served with or without the bone and another popular steak house in Cental Pattaya is Patrick’s. They serve an excellent Australian Black Angus rib-eye. The cut is from the same area of the cow as where you would get standing ribs, the cut is a little fatty but adds to the overall flavour. Delicious!

RUMP STEAK Rump steak is a slightly firmer steak that is taken from towards the upper-rear of the cow. This is not quite as tender as the sirloin and slightly cheaper as a result.

It’s recommended to grill and slice before serving, the steak is best served rare or medium-rare and is a common feature on many restaurant menus.

T-BONE The T-bone steak is effectively two cuts of meat on either side of the T-Bone. On one side, you have the tenderloin fillet and on the other, you have a large strip steak known as the ‘New York Strip’. The difference between the T-bone and Porterhouse is the latter has a larger cut of tenderloin. As you would imagine, as a larger piece of meat it is popular in many restaurants not only in Pattaya but around the world. This is best cooked medium or medium well-done although care needs to be taken not to overcook the meat.

IN PATTAYA Of course, here in Pattaya, you can go to a wide variety of places to enjoy your steak with many restaurants serving imported steaks as well as Thai steak. Care should be taken when ordering Thai steak to ensure it is not overcooked which can make it more than a little tough.

Most pubs will have all the live sports you could hope for and unlike many parts of the world there is no limit to the amount of sport displayed at any one time so expect to find lots of TV’s when you enter.
