Most of us enjoy a burger from time to time. It may be that we fancy something quick and easy or it may be that we fancy something succulent, juicy and tasty. If the second option is what you a preferring, then Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is the place for you. Located on the second floor of the new Terminal 21 shopping centre, Teddy’s do offer something just that little bit different. As they say themselves, they offer fine food, not fast food and are definitely different from the more familiar major chains. All of the burgers that they sell are prepared fresh so yes, you do have to wait that little bit longer but when your food does come, you won’t be disappointed. You will find that they have some different options available such as the Hawaiian Burger or the Fish Fillet Burger. As the name would suggest, they are certainly predominantly a burger restaurant but other food options are available such as New Orleans Chicken Wings if some members of your party don’t share your enthusiasm for a burger. Of course, pork is available for non-beef eaters. The restaurant is well laid out without being anything over the top – something that fits in well with a burger restaurant as opposed to an a la carte restaurant. Whilst Teddy’s is a franchise, it doesn’t have the same ambience as maybe a McDonald’s or a Burger King and this is a compliment. The staff are friendly and helpful which makes it particularly attractive for families although that by no means suggests that it is only aimed at this market. The range of drinks is good and the prices represent very good value for money, especially considering you are getting quality food. If you are in Terminal 21 and you are unsure what you want to eat, we would suggest that you give it a try. You won’t be disappointed and you will leave feeling contentedly full as the portions are ample. The place opens at 11am and closes at 11pm so you have plenty of opportunity to pop in if you are in the area. 10 Restaurant Review

Now more than ever, Pattaya has a fantastic range of expat groceries from chocolates to cheese and so much more. When the Pattaya Guide started way back in 2004 the options when it came to buying expat groceries and the items that we are more familiar with, was somewhat limited. We all used to be waiting for friends and family to be coming from ‘home’ armed with suitcases full of tinned salmon, Branston Pickle and the chocolates that we all know and love. Thankfully, that has all changed massively in the last few years with lots of shops around the city stocking a wide variety of expat groceries. In fact, we are lucky that with the advent of the internet we no longer have to leave our homes to find these products, simple searches online usually provide the answers that you need and many offer delivery direct to your door. There will be many people in and around the city who would crave English sausages and bacon only to have to make do with the local substitutes which fall some way short of the mark. Luckily, bacon, sausage and even black pudding have once again formed part of the diet of many British expats thanks to the ease and convenience that these products can now be purchased. It isn’t just the foods from the UK that now fill our stores, you only have to look around and see many products from across Europe, North America and Australia. In fact, every nationality is now well catered for when it comes to all foodstuff and groceries that they would expect to find in any supermarket back in their home. After the excess of Christmas and New Year, many people will be looking to give their bodies a break and chance to recover. One relatively cheap and easy addition that you could add to your diet is to introduce some healthy shakes and consider juicing some vegetables. This will help you to get your 5-a day in maybe a more palatable form as most of these drinks are tasty as well as being healthy. WHAT ARE HEALTHY SHAKES? Healthy shakes are probably what many people know as smoothies. There is a common misconception that they are a new idea that was recently introduced by dieticians and other health professionals. In actual fact, they date back to the 1920s and were invented by Julius Freed. Known for having reoccurring stomach problems, Freed create something that was easy to digest whilst still providing all the nutrients needed. He made a drink known as the Orange Julius and shared it with friends. Smoothies are commonly thick in nature and made from a combination of both vegetables and fruits. A healthy shake will contain plenty of vitamins along with carbohydrates and protein. Since household blenders became more common in the 1960s, an increasing number of people make these types of beverage at home. Of course, if you are wanting something that is quick and easy, plus contains all the ingredients that you are looking for, you are probably best picking one up at a restaurant that specialises in producing freshly made drinks. WHAT IS JUICING? Veggie juicing is a slight variation on your regular smoothie. Vegetables tend to contain very little sugar when compared to fruits which are generally high in fructose. They also contain various nutrients that are required for living a healthy lifestyle, preventing disease and improving your energy levels. The process of juicing involves effectively crushing vegetable into a pulp that contains enough water to be easily drinkable. For this reason, you need to think about what quantities and types of vegetable you are going to use. Often leafy vegetables contain high levels of nutrients but little water so only need to form a small percentage of your veggie juice. Cucumbers and even carrots contain fairly large amounts of water so should form the basis of your drink. Juicing should be done using a dedicated juicer due to the hardness of certain vegetables which can easily damage a normal blender, prices start from 5,000 Thai baht and can be found in larger electrical stores around Patttaya. Alternatively you can buy veggie juice from various juicing stalls at large malls. HEALTH BENEFITS As we have already touched upon, healthy smoothies and vegetable juice have a number of health benefits. They are easier for the body to absorb whilst most people believe that you actually consume greater amounts of vegetables without you even being aware of it! They will improve your immune system, your digestive system as well as being great for bone health. Veggie Juice and smoothies can be consumed on the go and when fruit and vegetables are combined together, they are pleasant drinks to consume. Obviously, you should always make sure that no additional sugar is added by the person making the drink as this will defeat the purpose! WHERE CAN YOU GET THEM IN PATTAYA? The next obvious question is where can you buy healthy shakes and veggie juices in Pattaya? One of the best-known places is the Living Food CafĂŠ at Fairtex on North Pattaya Road. They have a wide variety of options available with some containing ingredients such as wheatgrass that may be less readily available. An inside interview into Pattaya’s Eating Out industry Peter Hutchinson from Robin’s Nest gives his answers to our questions on what it’s like to run a restaurant in a competitive place like Pattaya Q When did you start at Robin’s Nest? A Over three years now, started at the Nest in November 2015. Q Tell us about yourself? A I’m from Brisbane Australia, single and have been since I moved here. I like golf and the Thai caddies, social drinking, and Thai dancers. Q Best day of the week? A Wednesday – my day off and I get to sleep in! Q Biggest spenders? A We don’t really have big spenders as such. We have a busy lunchtime and dinner guests but the spend is nearly always the same. Q Your favourite dish? A Sizzling Mexican chicken or the steak night with a whole roasted garlic. Q Most popular items? A Lasagne special out sells everything and it’s only on for 2 days a week. Q Biggest challenges? A Thai working culture. It has taken me a long time to build a team mentality with my staff. To teach them working together can generate better service and more tips than each staff member chasing one personal tip. Q Best part of the day? A The quiet time in the afternoon from 4:00pm to 6:30pm where I can catch up on work or have a sneaky afternoon break at the coffee shop.
