Pattaya also known as Fun City is Thailand’s most popular resort only 90 minutes from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats and you’ll find many go go bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and the odd ladyboy. Food is another one of the highlights of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. Cajun, Chinese, Indian, Italian, English, French, Vietnamese, German, Russian and more. Today Pattaya attracts annually more then a million tourists from all over the world. Pattaya provides high standard hotels, restaurants, sports, entertainment and shopping. It really has it all and a whole lot more. 6

GETTING AROUND GUIDE
THIS MONTH WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET A FLAT TYRE Punctures are one of those things that we just to have accept in life and unfortunately in Pattaya they are quite common; especially on motorbikes. Although they are an inconvenience they are relatively easy to repair and you can be back on the road in no time at all! Repairs are usually very cheap, certainly in comparison to our home countries with repair shops all over the city just waiting for the next bike to come along waiting for a repair! When people ask what should I do if I get a puncture it seems obvious to say take it to a repair shop but if you are new to the city or new to riding a bike you may not know. Repair shops are fairly easy to spot if you are looking for them but probably not something that you look for everyday. It takes literally minutes for the shop to carry out the repair as they have all the equipment on hand and teams ready and waiting. Sadly, if you do get a puncture it is your responsibility – so please only contact Pattaya Rent a Bike as a last resort. Repairs will be cheap (tire replacement around 400 baht, tire repair around 100 baht) so don’t worry about that and a repair shop will be literally hundreds of metres away from you if you are in the city. Ask a local to point you in the right direction. You won’t need to be able to speak Thai for this one! Just show them the puncture and pointing will get you the desired conclusion pretty quickly! When you are taking the bike to the repair shop you will need to push it rather than ride it. Riding the bike will cause excessive damage to the tyre and inner tube so it may then require new ones rather than just being a simple repair. This will take more time and will be far more costly. Just use your common sense if you do get a puncture, do what you would do at home and remember a repair shop will be very close to you wherever you are in the city and they are often open 24 hours a day. 8

At these you can sample such delicacies as: Som Tam (spicy salad) or Hoy Tord (fried mussels or oysters with egg) and the amazing variety of seafood.

Thai Red Curry Chicken 4 SERVINGS • PREP TIME: 4 HOURS
THAI COOKING GUIDE INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
230g can sliced bamboo shoots
1kg chicken thigh fillets, cut in half
1 tablespoon brown sugar
114g can Thai red curry paste
140ml can coconut milk
1 cup chicken stock
1/3 cup basil leaves
150g fresh shiitake mushrooms, halved
Steamed rice to serve
1 tablespoon fish sauce
METHOD Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook chicken, in batches, for 1 to 2 minutes each side or until golden. Transfer to slow cooker. Reduce frying pan heat to low. Add remaining oil to pan. Add curry paste and cook, stirring, for 1 to 2 minutes or until aromatic. Add stock and stir until curry paste has dissolved. Add mushroom and bamboo shoots. Pour mixture over chicken and stir to combine. Cover and cook on high for 3 1/2 hours. Combine fish sauce, sugar and coconut milk in a jug. Stir into curry. Cover and cook on high for a further 30 minutes. Stir in basil. Serve over rice. 20

If you’re the watersports type, then check out both Jomtien and Pattaya beaches where you can find windsurfing, parasailing, jet skis and canoeing, the mild to strong winds make for excellent windsurfing and sailing conditions throughout the year. ART IN PARADISE Art in Paradise is a three-dimensional art gallery located on Pattaya 2nd Road. The gallery displays more than one hundred three-dimensional painting with the area of 6,000 square meters. It is divided into more than ten zones including Aqua zone, Safari Zone, Classic Art Zone, Ayutthaya zone, Egypt zone, Surrealism zone, Dinosaur zone and Thai zone. Opening Times: 9am to 9pm. NONG NOOCH GARDEN Located approximately 18km south of Pattaya, the Garden can be reached by taking a left turn from Sukhumvit Road at the Km 163 marker. The Garden is a sprawling recreation park in a typical Thai setting. A group of traditional Thai pavilions and gardens of different flowering plants are positioned around the beautifully landscaped site. Opening Times: 8am to 6pm. Website: www.nongnoochtropicalgarden.com THE COLOSSEUM PATTAYA The Colosseum Cabaret Show located on Threprassit Road in Jomtien is the largest ladyboy (transvestite) show in the whole of Asia with a seated capacity of over 1000, 350 of which are classed as VIP seats. All of the seats are located in a semi circle to ensure that all visitors have an unobstructed view. The Colosseum is well located in Jomtien so there is easy access to theatre especially for visitors coming from out of town. The Colosseum, needless to say is designed to look like the Colosseum in Rome and came in at a cost of around THB400 million. The show itself describes itself as ‘glitzy and glamorous’ with spectacular costumes are well choreographed dance routines. THE SRI RACHA TIGER FARM The farm, which is situated at 20km marker on highway No.36, raises a large number of Bengal tigers, as well as large crocodiles. Within the compound is a gigantic temple like structure entirely made of wood that is 105 metres high at the highest point which was constructed to withstand wind and sunshine on the seashore, with exquisite architectural features, the sanctuary was conceived out of the vision that human civilization has been achieved and nurtured by religious and philosophical truths. Pattaya has numerous large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but do not expect to find variety as most shops are selling the same things. Pattaya actually has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok for variety and volume of shops but it is trying with several new shopping centres opening in recent years, and there’s more to come.
Bargaining is a way of life here but don’t worry if you don’t know your Thai numbers as most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule what ever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay.

The island of Koh Chang is a tropical marine national park. It consists of over 70% rainforest and is the best preserved tourist holiday destination in Thailand. Situated four hours from Pattaya, Koh Chang Thailand’s second largest island after Phuket. Recently, with the surge of development and popularity, it has been elevated to Thailand’s new tourist haven. It has white sandy coves and beaches, pristine rain forests and abundance of wildlife and marine life, high mountain peaks, several scenic waterfalls, a rich variety of cuisine and great nightlife. Accommodation ranges from simple beach huts and bungalows to luxury villas and apartments. If you drive, you can hire motorbikes, jeeps and cars to take you to any of the beaches along the coastal roads and, in the evening, there are plenty of restaurants, live music bars and nightclubs to choose from to spice up your stay. ACCOMMODATION Paddy’s Palms Resort, 32 room resort with hot water, air con, TV and fridge. The resort itself has a large swimming pool, excellent parking and is located 5 minutes from Whites Sands Beach. 1000 – 1300 baht. Palm Garden Hotel, a small 12 room hotel with hot water, air con, TV and fridge. Just 50m from the beach in the heart of the main tourist spot, White Sands Beach. RESTAURANTS 15 Palms, a beautiful beach side restaurant on White Sands Beach serves European food with everything from pizzas, salads, pasta, burgers and of course Thai food. Paddy’s Palms, Koh Chang’s first Irish Pub is a well managed pub with a great atmosphere. They have a pool table, wireless internet, live sport on big screens, great Italian coffee, traditional Irish dishes, Kilkenny and Guinness on tap. The restaurant is the most popular on the Island and must be visited. 64

KOH LARN GUIDE
Koh Larn is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand about 7km off the coast of Pattaya Beach. The Island is about 4km long and 2km wide and at it is about 180 meters high at the highest point. The terrain is mostly mountainous which is covered in most part with heavy vegetation. Infrastructure is mainly narrow roadways covered with brick pavers. Some of the roadways are very steep and only wide enough for two motorbikes to pass by each other, but most roads are suitable for regular traffic. Koh Larn has six main beaches and a few smaller beaches for visitors to enjoy. All the beaches are of white sand and clear blue waters. There are many water sport activities at each of the beaches. There are also many other activities such as parasailing for you to enjoy while visiting Koh Larn. All the beaches have full facilities such as bathrooms and showers. Then there are the restaurants that serve up delicious fresh catch of the day seafood or just about any other dish you may desire. You can choose to order your meal in the restaurant or straight from your beach lounger. Yes, a day on Koh Larn can be a very relaxing experience, with the gentle sounds of the ocean and without all the noise of the city. There are many resorts on the island of Koh Larn, they range from budget rooms to luxury accommodations one of the best is Suntosa Resort. While room rates are a little higher on the island than in Pattaya or Jomtien it is well worth the experience of spending the night on the island of Koh Larn. Visas are probably the one thing that causes most confusion in Thailand. It seems that the rules regarding visas change on an almost daily basis and sometimes even depending on who you see or the questions that you ask. Whilst it is impossible to give any sort of advice when Immigration Officers are acting on a ‘whim’ it is possible to explain what visas are available in Thailand. Below is a simple guide to the general types of Visa that you can get for your stay in Thailand. VISA ON ARRIVAL This is the visa that is given to you at the airport when you arrive in Thailand. This is a form of tourist visa that grants you 30 days stay in the Kingdom. This can be extended at immigration for up to a maximum of 30 days. TOURIST VISA A 60 day Tourist Visa is obtain from a Thai Embassy (outside of Thailand) prior to your travel to the Kingdom. The visa can be single or multi entry. Again it is possible to extend this visa at Immigration although extensions are not always guaranteed. NON IMMIGRANT VISA This is valid for 90 days and is usually a single entry visa. There are a number of visas in this category although the most common are B (for the purposes of work), ED (for the purpose of education), O (to visit family residing in Thailand) or OA (for a retirement visa). The single entry visa is usually obtained in your home country prior to travel and then will be extended at the Immigration Department once you are in Thailand.

BUSINESS VISA This is the Non Immigrant B Visa that you will obtain from Immigration. This allows you to get a work permit and conduct business legally in Thailand. Once you have this visa you will need to report to the Immigration Department once every 90 days. MARRIAGE VISA To obtain a Marriage Visa you must be legally married and have THB400,000 in a Thai bank account. There are several documents that you will need to produce such as your marriage certificate, proof of funds, copy of your spouse’s Tabian Baan and a map to your home in Thailand. RETIREMENT VISA To obtain a retirement visa in Thailand you must be over 50 years of age, not working and have THB800,000 in a Thai Bank or an income of THB65,000 per month or combination of the two. PERMANENT RESIDENT VISA To qualify for this visa you must have been living in Thailand for 3 consecutive, 1 year visas. If you are married to a Thai for over 5 years you need an income of THB30,000 per month and if you are single THB80,000 per month. All information is correct at time of writing but subject to change.
