THIS MONTH DO NOT DRINK & DRIVE IN THAILAND Drink driving has been a problem in Thailand for a long time and unfortunately one of the places where the problem is particularly serious is in Pattaya. Driving in the city and surrounding areas in the evenings or at night time it’s likely that you’ll have seen police checks either being setup or in operation. The new crackdown that has started in the last few weeks is part of a Thailand wide campaign to raise the awareness of the dangers of drink driving. Previously, as with many traffic offences in Thailand, people had viewed it as something that they could buy their way out of and almost something that wasn’t a serious criminal offence. One of the main issues that both Thais and foreigners experience is the fact that most people don’t actually know what the legal drink drive limits are. Having a Thai driving licence for 5 years or more, the legal limit is 50mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. And if you have your licence less than 5 years, the limit is only 20mg of alcohol for 100 millilitres of blood. For those people who are found guilty of drink driving the penalties are quite severe. If you are caught driving under the influence of alcohol but without causing injury you will face a fine of between THB5000 and THB20,000, at least a 6 month driving ban and up to one year in prison. Should you injure someone you will face an automatic prison sentence with the length dependant on the severities of the injury, fines up to THB100,000 and a driving ban. If you cause a death whilst under the influence you could face up to 10 years in prison and a THB200,000 fine. Needless to say, it would pay to get a taxi rather than drink and drive in Thailand.

With a wealth of international restaurants offering delicious food, Pattaya is truly the crossroads of cuisine in Asia. French, Mexican, German, ltalian, Indian, Chinese, Scandinavian, Korean, Japanese and of course, Thai plus many other varieties of restaurant are located within the city. For most visitors to Pattaya the experience of new and interesting dishes is an exciting alternative to the traditional foods available at home. However, along with wonderful Thai dishes, one should sample the culinary delights available from other countries. Is New Nordic the New “King of the Hill”? If you are already a resident of Pattaya, you’re probably already well aware of New Nordic’s many accomplishments. Thai Green Curry with Chicken 4 SERVINGS • PREP TIME: 35 MINUTES
THAI COOKING GUIDE INGREDIENTS: • 2-3 Tblsp green curry paste • 1/2 cup (120 grams) boneless chicken breast, diagonally sliced • 1 1/2 cup coconut cream • 1 cup coconut milk • 1/2 cup (80 grams) Thai eggplant
• 2 kaffir lime leaves, shredded • 1 fresh green chillis, sliced • 1 /4 cup fresh sweet basil leaves • 3 Tablespoons fish sauce • 1 Tablespoon palm sugar
METHOD In a wok, heat coconut cream over a medium heat until boiling. Add green curry paste and stir well over a low heat for about 10-15 minutes or until just glossy. Add chicken and boil for another 5 minutes. Add seasoning sauce and coconut milk and bring to a boil. Add baby eggplants and continuing cooking for another few minutes until cooked through. Add kaffir lime leaves, sweet basil leaves, and fresh green chilies. Remove from the heat. Spoon into a serving bowl. Garnish with sweet basil and fresh green chilies. 34

MURPHY’S DARKSIDE REVIEW
Murphy’s Pub has recently opened on the Darkside. Steve the owner of Murphy’s has moved to East Pattaya and decided to open a family pub and restaurant. The pub is situated on Soi Khao Noi opposite the Pattaya Hill 2 village and comes complete with a large outside area – including a swimming pool as well as indoor, air conditioned area that is the most popular spot for families. Although Murphy’s has only been open a few weeks now it is proving to be a popular venue on the darkside offering a really change from many of the other bars and restaurants that are in the area. There is of course a pool table for those looking to shoot a few frames as part of their night out. When you enter the restaurant you will be welcomed by the very solid number of regulars who have already started to refer to it has their ‘local’. The menu is pretty good and includes both Western and Thai dishes along with a range of kids meals to cater for absolutely everyone and every taste. The drinks menu is also good with a range of beers, spirits and cocktails on offer as well kids and soft drinks. The prices of both the food and the drink menu are very reasonable and certainly comparable with many of the other establishments in the area. Murphy’s Pub Darkside is sure to prove a winner in East Pattaya and is a great place for families to go although groups of friends will not feel out of place or uncomfortable which is a big achievement. A big congratulations must go out to Steve and Gavin who have certainly managed to achieve what they intended and have managed to develop a rather toned version of Murphy’s Law although the old theme still continues ‘Never Goin’ Home’!

NONG NOOCH GARDEN Located approximately 18km south of Pattaya, the Garden can be reached by taking a left turn from Sukhumvit Road at the Km 163 marker. The Garden is a sprawling recreation park in a typical Thai setting. The Colosseum is well located in Jomtien so there is easy access to theatre especially for visitors coming from out of town. Pattaya has numerous large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but do not expect to find variety as most shops are selling the same things. Pattaya actually has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok for variety and volume of shops but it is trying with several new shopping centres opening in recent years, and there’s more to come.
Bargaining is a way of life here but don’t worry if you don’t know your Thai numbers as most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule what ever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay.

The island of Koh Chang is a tropical marine national park. It consists of over 70% rainforest and is the best preserved tourist holiday destination in Thailand. Situated four hours from Pattaya, Koh Chang Thailand’s second largest island after Phuket. Recently, with the surge of development and popularity, it has been elevated to Thailand’s new tourist haven. It has white sandy coves and beaches, pristine rain forests and abundance of wildlife and marine life, high mountain peaks, several scenic waterfalls, a rich variety of cuisine and great nightlife. Accommodation ranges from simple beach huts and bungalows to luxury villas and apartments. If you drive, you can hire motorbikes, jeeps and cars to take you to any of the beaches along the coastal roads and, in the evening, there are plenty of restaurants, live music bars and nightclubs to choose from to spice up your stay. They have a pool table, wireless internet, live sport on big screens, great Italian coffee, traditional Irish dishes, Kilkenny and Guinness on tap. KOH LARN GUIDE
Koh Larn is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand about 7km off the coast of Pattaya Beach. The Island is about 4km long and 2km wide and at it is about 180 meters high at the highest point. The terrain is mostly mountainous which is covered in most part with heavy vegetation. Infrastructure is mainly narrow roadways covered with brick pavers. Some of the roadways are very steep and only wide enough for two motorbikes to pass by each other, but most roads are suitable for regular traffic. Koh Larn has six main beaches and a few smaller beaches for visitors to enjoy. All the beaches are of white sand and clear blue waters. There are many water sport activities at each of the beaches. There are also many other activities such as parasailing for you to enjoy while visiting Koh Larn. All the beaches have full facilities such as bathrooms and showers. Then there are the restaurants that serve up delicious fresh catch of the day seafood or just about any other dish you may desire. You can choose to order your meal in the restaurant or straight from your beach lounger. Yes, a day on Koh Larn can be a very relaxing experience, with the gentle sounds of the ocean and without all the noise of the city. There are many resorts on the island of Koh Larn, they range from budget rooms to luxury accommodations one of the best is Suntosa Resort. While room rates are a little higher on the island than in Pattaya or Jomtien it is well worth the experience of spending the night on the island of Koh Larn. Visas are probably the one thing that causes most confusion in Thailand. It seems that the rules regarding visas change on an almost daily basis and sometimes even depending on who you see or the questions that you ask. Whilst it is impossible to give any sort of advice when Immigration Officers are acting on a ‘whim’ it is possible to explain what visas are available in Thailand. Below is a simple guide to the general types of Visa that you can get for your stay in Thailand. VISA ON ARRIVAL This is the visa that is given to you at the airport when you arrive in Thailand. This is a form of tourist visa that grants you 30 days stay in the Kingdom. This can be extended at immigration for up to a maximum of 30 days. TOURIST VISA A 60 day Tourist Visa is obtain from a Thai Embassy (outside of Thailand) prior to your travel to the Kingdom. The visa can be single or multi entry. Again it is possible to extend this visa at Immigration although extensions are not always guaranteed. NON IMMIGRANT VISA This is valid for 90 days and is usually a single entry visa. There are a number of visas in this category although the most common are B (for the purposes of work), ED (for the purpose of education), O (to visit family residing in Thailand) or OA (for a retirement visa). The single entry visa is usually obtained in your home country prior to travel and then will be extended at the Immigration Department once you are in Thailand.

BUSINESS VISA This is the Non Immigrant B Visa that you will obtain from Immigration. This allows you to get a work permit and conduct business legally in Thailand. Once you have this visa you will need to report to the Immigration Department once every 90 days. MARRIAGE VISA To obtain a Marriage Visa you must be legally married and have THB400,000 in a Thai bank account. There are several documents that you will need to produce such as your marriage certificate, proof of funds, copy of your spouse’s Tabian Baan and a map to your home in Thailand. RETIREMENT VISA To obtain a retirement visa in Thailand you must be over 50 years of age, not working and have THB800,000 in a Thai Bank or an income of THB65,000 per month or combination of the two. PERMANENT RESIDENT VISA To qualify for this visa you must have been living in Thailand for 3 consecutive, 1 year visas. If you are married to a Thai for over 5 years you need an income of THB30,000 per month and if you are single THB80,000 per month. All information is correct at time of writing but subject to change.
