Quote of the Month “It doesn’t matter where you

came from. All that matters is where you are going.” - Brian Tracy

W

elcome to 2017! We hope you have had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas, and are looking forward to the excitement of the year ahead.

January has traditionally been associated with fresh starts and new beginnings. Even the name of the month is suggestive of this: “January” comes from the Latin ‘ianuarius’, meaning ‘door’. The new year is welcomed in across the world with firework displays, champagne and song. British traditions for the 1st January include First Footing – a Scottish tradition invoking good luck for the forthcoming year – and a Welsh tradition of gift-giving, called Calennig. January is the first month of the year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, with New Year’s Day celebrated on 14th January by those using the older calendar. In modern culture, the physical change of the new year has become associated with encouraging positive change within oneself, whether it be a commitment to boosting physical health or to improving one’s general character. January is a perfect time to commit to self-improvement, after the excesses of Christmas and with the thrill of a new year to look forward to. Inspire yourself by visiting a local gym or taking up a new class, or treat yourself after Christmas to a relaxing massage. Many such businesses can be found in our directory – why not try them? Whatever your plans for the year ahead, we wish you every success and a prosperous 2017. If you have any views or feedback on The Local Directory publications please do contact us - email us at info@ localdirectoryltd.co.uk, many thanks for reading. Bu

What is a Celebrant?

by Christopher Courtney - Celebrant The responsibility for co-ordinating a ceremony will rest with us at least once in our lives, if not more. These ceremonies will be important and will mark pivotal, life-changing events such as births, marriages and deaths. The ceremony should be special, and it should be unique, personal and meaningful. For a lot of people this process can be a daunting one, so choosing the right professional to guide you through it is crucial. When deciding who to engage to plan, write and deliver your ceremony you generally have three broad choices: A Religious Minister If you wish your ceremony to conform to the rules and principles of your chosen faith, and for it to be conducted in the consecrated building of your faith, this is your option. A Humanist Officiant or Council Registrar If you wish your ceremony to follow a strictly non-religious, Atheist format then a Humanist or Registrar is the option for you. A Celebrant The first two options sit at very opposite ends of your spectrum of choice and while both will provide you with guidance and a ceremony, this will be restricted in accordance with the professionals own values, belief (or non-belief) systems and organisational procedure. A Celebrant provides a service that sits in the middle of that spectrum of choice. A professional able to provide you with a broader choice from both ends of the spectrum. Someone who will provide you with a ceremony without imposing any belief’s or values – other than those chosen by you. Often people may not want a religious ceremony, but want to provide for those with faith - A Celebrant can cater for the inclusion of hymns or scripture readings or both. You can be more flexible with your venue choice when engaging the services of a Celebrant, and take the opportunity to be more creative. The content of your ceremony should never feel restrictive – after all, you want it to be unique. Readings, music, poems, traditions can be whatever, and from wherever, you choose. Perhaps even observing a tradition particular only to your family. For example, at a recent funeral there was a ceremonial pouring of a pint of Guinness! A Celebrant can write the whole ceremony based on conversations with family members although it is also an option for use a Celebrant simply to co-ordinate chosen elements in a format that flows well within any time constraints. Choice is precious. No matter who you are or where you come from choice is one of our fundamental rights. Your ceremony is precious too. We all deserve our ceremonies to reflect who we are and to celebrate our unique contributions to the world.

Christopher Courtney Celebrant

Courtesy, Care, Compassion An independent Civil Celebrant who will listen to you & your family in order to plan, write and conduct a ceremony to your specified requirements. Contact: 07769 489804 or cccelebrant@gmail.com www.christophercourtneycelebrant.com

Bought a faulty electrical item? Know your consumer rights This month Citizens Advice Chiltern looks at your rights if you have been sold faulty electrical goods at Christmas. Recent research from Citizens Advice reveals that two thirds of people had a problem with a faulty electrical item in the last two years. However, 1 in 4 people were initially turned away by retailers when they tried to get a repair, replacement or refund, despite the retailer having a responsibility to offer a solution. Q

What should I do if an electrical item I’ve bought is faulty?

A

Don’t attempt to fix it yourself - this could stop you getting redress because it will make it harder to prove you did not cause the fault. You may also risk injuring yourself. Return it to the retailer - It’s the responsibility of the retailer to help you resolve the problem, not the manufacturer. They should cover the costs of returning the item - contact them first to check the best way to do this and to negotiate an option that’s most convenient for you.

Q

What are my rights to get a repair, replacement or refund on faulty electrical goods?

A

Bought within the last 30 days - you can get a refund on a faulty product. Bought within the last 6 months - you are entitled to have it repaired or replaced once. If the item still doesn’t work you should get a full refund. Bought more than 6 months ago - you may still get a repair or replacement but you will only get a partial refund to reflect the use you’ve got out of the item. You’ll need to prove you didn’t cause the fault which may make it harder to get redress. If the item is unsafe, stop using it and unplug it if applicable. For more information about repairs, replacements or unsafe items, you can contact the the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06. How to spread and save money at the vets! By Fiona Mullan BSc Hons RVN VPAC

With Christmas now behind us, most of us will be feeling the January blues and post Christmas pinch, so how can you save money on your vet trips and pet healthcare this New Year?

Health Care Plans Many vet pracces now offer their own ‘Pet health club’ or selecon of ‘Health care plans’. These are designed to spread the cost of essenal preventaves like vaccinaons, ea treatment, worming treatment into smaller monthly payments, whilst also offering member only benets and discounts. Such discounts and benets may include reduced consultaon fees, or reduced fees for roune surgical procedures such as neutering or dental procedures. In addion to reducing payments, your pet will also be geng the best care as they will be coming to the pracce more regularly as a result. Many plans will include 6 monthly alternang Vet/Veterinary Nurse check-ups. Therefore, condions that might develop and potenally become more serious will be spoed earlier and treated earlier.

Pet Insurance Whilst health care plans are a great way to keep your pet healthy, they are NOT an insurance plan and so will not contribute to fees should your pet become ill or have an accident. Therefore, it is strongly recommend you have a constant pet insurance policy running alongside a preventave health plan to cover all circumstances. Do I really need pet insurance, can’t I just put money aside? Some owners choose to put money aside each month rather than pay seemingly costly premiums. However, this oen is not enough to cover costs when lengthy hospitalisaon, emergency surgery or referral is needed. Insurance also takes away some of the worry at the stressful me when your pet is ill, as you know that costs are covered and further treatments and opons can be explored. What insurance policy should I get? It is worthwhile spending a lot of me thoroughly researching and reading all the ‘small print’ of different policies before deciding which one is best for you. Some policies will be life-long whereas others will have a money or me limit per condion, and you don’t want to get caught out should your pet have a condion which requires lifelong medicaon or treatment.

Tips from Target It’s that time of the year again and, incidentally, my favourite time of the year. Working as a personal trainer, January is by far my busiest month. The realisation that a month of indulgence in December can undo all the hard work of January to November is enough to make anyone run to the juicer or spin bike! Seeing people coming back to the gym after some time away or even seeing new faces walk through the door- all with such determination- makes my job worthwhile. A personal trainer will never judge you (we’re not saints!), but we will be there with the skills and knowledge to help you achieve your goals. Here are a few of my top tips for meeting your 2017 goals:

1

Be clear on what you want to achieve. You’ve probably heard the term ‘SMART’ goal before, but it is important to make sure that any target you set yourself is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Bound. Let’s use an exampleyou want to lose weight. How much weight do you want to lose? How will you measure this (i.e. body weight, body fat, bmi etc)? Is this an achievable target, bearing in mind that a loss of more than 2lbs a week is not always recommended as it can lead to loss of muscle mass as well as fat loss? Does this target fit in with your lifestyle, e.g. family or work commitments? And when would you like to achieve it? By really focusing on what you want, you’ll be more determined to achieve it.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You may be tempted to buy the latest fad diet book, and this may work for you, but a book aimed at a million readers will rarely be specific enough to suit your individual requirements. Speaking to a health professional- for example a nutritionist or personal trainer- will provide you with more individualised support and advice to meet your goal.

2

18 Please mention Missenden & Hazlemere Local when responding to adverts

Get a little help from your friends. Do you have a friend with the same goal? Why not make a plan together. Alternatively, you can join a gym or a group fitness class where you will meet like-minded people with similar goals. Classes are a great way to get fit in a fun and sociable environment. Try and pick classes that have a small number of participants so that you can achieve as much attention from the instructor as possible. This not only ensures that you are exercising safely, but also efficiently.

3

4

Don’t stress. The worst thing that you can do is too much all at once. Don’t set yourself unrealistic expectations- going to the gym five times a week may sound like a great idea, but how realistic is this? You not only put unnecessary pressure on yourself, but risk over training which may cause injury or put you off exercising in the future. Why not encorporate some yoga or Pilates into your training as well. Taking time out to stretch and strengthen your core muscles is essential to muscular health, and relaxation has been shown to improve mental health and resolve / will power.

So to be more specific, the third week of January is my favourite time of the year. Those people who walked through our door on 2nd January are starting to see results and enjoy working out! If you want to be one of them, why not come in for a free consultation where we can discuss your goals and how we can help you achieve them.

• J E N N I F E R L AWR E N C E • She overcame the odds in Joy, saved the world in X-Men: Apocalypse and even survived e Hunger Games, but nothing could prepare Jennifer Lawrence for her latest space adventure…

“IT

could have been an absolute disaster...” said Jennifer Lawrence on what it was like spending up to 18 hours a day, five days a week, on the set of new film Passengers. “But because of Chris Pratt it was the best day of my life every day. It was so fun. He's a great actor and everything happened really effortlessly with us together.” The 26-year-old is no rookie when it comes to gruelling Hollywood schedules, but the space epic posed a new set of challenges – not least due to the fact that for the majority of the film she and Pratt are the only two actors. Centred around the voyage of the Starship Avalon, Passengers follows the intergalactic vehicle’s 120-year journey across the galaxy. The Avalon’s 5000 passengers are in suspended animation to prevent aging until they arrive at their far-off destination, but a malfunction wakes Jim (Pratt) up 90 years too early. Faced with spending the rest of his life alone – except for a charming robot bartender played by Michael Sheen – Jim wakes up fellow space traveller Aurora (Lawrence). The pair fall in love, but soon find themselves tasked with saving the ship from certain destruction. 22 Please mention Missenden & Hazlemere Local when responding to adverts

“What interested me about the script is that it’s about humankind and we're all in a place where we're interested in space and we're interested in exploration,” explains the Kentuckyborn beauty. “But the film also explores very human and personal themes and deep relationships, and that is very important to the story.” Like 2013’s Gravity, Passengers relies heavily on stunning visuals and CGI effects. In one scene, Lawrence is swimming in a pool when the gravity fails, leaving her suspended in midair inside a shifting and seemingly inescapable bubble of water. “It was literally breath-taking for me. It was exciting and daunting although I didn't know how they were going to shoot it and it's definitely the coolest scene I've ever shot in my life,” she says excitedly.

Among her upcoming projects is Marita in which she plays the recently deceased Fidel Castro’s lover. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky, whom Lawrence is rumoured to be dating. Notoriously tight-lipped about her private life, however, there is only one relationship the starlet is happy to talk about, with her dog, Pippi. Often referring to the pampered pooch as her child, she says that were she to go on an epic galactic voyage she would take “her baby” even though the animal “would hate it!” Unlike her character, Lawrence has no interest in space travel – when asked if she would consider going to Mars replies with her trademark guffaw, crying “I've heard that the weather there is terrible, and that it's very windy and very hot. No, I don't think that's going to happen!” Of course, when you’re an Oscar-winning actress who commands millions per film and has legions of adoring fans, life on Earth is about as stellar as it gets. Squash & Spinach Lasagne Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes

Recipe

If you fancy a meat-free supper this week then try this delicious filling vegetarian lasagne. Serve with a crisp green salad and crusty bread.

Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to mix. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the squash is very tender. Cool for 10 minutes.

Ingredients: • 1 butternut squash, peeled and flesh diced • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency.

• 1 tsp dried oregano • 3 tbsp olive oil

Steam the spinach for 1-2 minutes until just wilted. Place the lasagne sheets in a large shallow heatproof dish and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3-4 minutes to soften then lift out of the water and drain on kitchen paper. Mix together the ricotta and cottage cheeses in a bowl along with half the mozzarella cheese.

• 200g baby spinach leaves • 250g pack fresh egg lasagne sheets • 250g ricotta cheese • 300g cottage cheese

Spread a third of the squash mixture in the base of a square medium-sized ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of wilted spinach followed by a layer of the cheese mixture and a layer of lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit if necessary.

• 150g ready-grated mozzarella cheese • 25g pine nuts • Green salad, to serve

TIP

Instead of the spinach you could use lightly fried slices of courgette or sliced beefsteak tomatoes.

5

Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with lasagne sheets and a thin layer of the remaining cheese mixture. Scatter over the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the pine nuts, and drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese topping is golden and bubbling. Serve with green salad.
