Quote of the Month “Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.” - Lewis Grizzard

W

elcome to Spring! The 20th March is the Vernal Equinox, marking the official start of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. In addition to the start of the lambing season, March is a real explosion of colour in the plant world as daffodils dominate the hedgerows and roadsides. The daffodil is also the symbol of Wales, which celebrates the feast day of their patron saint, St David, on 1st March. Also celebrated in March is St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. His feast day is 17th March, and marked across Ireland by feasting and parades in his honour. The 26th March is a day to remember this month – Mothering Sunday. Traditionally the Sunday when Christians would attend their nearest cathedral or large “mother” church, it is now a day where the role of mothers is celebrated across Britain. The giving of flowers is particularly popular, as are gifts of chocolate and other presents. Mothering Sunday is alternatively known as ‘Simnel Sunday’, being the Sunday when the Lent fast was relaxed. Simnel cake is a light fruit cake, topped with a layer of marzipan and decorated with eleven marzipan balls, which are then toasted to give a golden-brown colour. This year Mothering Sunday is an especially important date to remember, as the clocks go forward by an hour at 2am on the 26th – don’t forget! So whether you are enjoying the beautiful flowers or indulging in fruit cake, enjoy the start of warmer, dryer weather – until next time! If you have any views or feedback on The Local Directory publications please do contact us - email us at info@ localdirectoryltd.co.uk, many thanks for reading. Bu

The Difficult Discussion ‘Pet Euthanasia and Saying Goodbye' By Fiona Mullan BSc Hons RVN VPAC

There is no harder decision or Ɵme for an owner, than when it comes to saying goodbye to a beloved pet and companion. No maƩer how big or small they are, pets are a massive part of our lives, and it’s no exaggeraƟon that they are members of our family. Euthanasia is probably the most dreaded subject for pet owners to discuss, and as with death in general, it's not something many feel able to talk about openly or ask quesons. We encourage you to discuss euthanasia with your vet or qualied veterinary nurse—they understand are there to help you. Having this discussion in advance can help ease some of the anxiety when the me comes, making you feel reassured and more prepared.

Common owner questions, statements and anxieties 'How do I know now is the Ɵme...?' No one knows your pet beer than you, so you will be the best judge as to whether your pet has the same quality of life that they are used to. Discussions with your vet about your pets condion will enable you to decide if more me/treatment is jused and fair or whether it's kinder to say goodbye. 'Does it hurt?' No it doesn’t hurt. Your pet will be given an injecon of a drug similar to an anaesthec, which is painless and takes effect in seconds. All they will feel is the scratch when the needle/IV cannula goes in, then they will fall into a deep sleep, completely unaware as the body shuts down. 'Do I have to be present?' No, you do whatever is best for you. Many people prefer to stay with their pets and nd it comforng to be there, whilst others do not, and neither are wrong! Your vet will ask you what your preference is in advance, and won't pressure you either way. 'I'm not ready to decide, I'm hoping he/she will die peacefully in their sleep' Many people say this, and it sounds like the 'ideal scenario' but unfortunately things rarely play out this way. Animals are experts at hiding pain and can struggle on for a long period of me, even though it may not be obvious to their owner. Euthanasia is the kindest way to prevent suffering.

Dealing with grief Never apologise before, during, or aer euthanasia for being emoonal! Many owners apologise to vets/nurses for crying. Remember, we are pet owners too and have been in your shoes, so don't feel you have to act a certain way. We are there for you, with ssues at the ready!

Finance It May Not Be Too Late To Make A Claim For Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) By Ann Haldon

Finance

• They told you the loan would be more expensive if you didn’t sign up for PPI.

According to ‘Which?’ the banks have written to 5.5 million customers, letting them know they might have been mis-sold PPI and offering three years in which to make a claim. Although some of these letters were sent in 2013, people are still successfully claiming PPI from banks and other lenders. A potential final deadline of June 2019 has also been announced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). If this is confirmed, it offers plenty of time to write to lenders and recover the money that should never have been taken from you. Could you have been missold PPi? PPI could have been mis-sold to you in a number of ways, including these scenarios: • You were pressured by the salesperson, or told it was compulsory. • You were self-employed, unemployed, or retired when the policy was taken out. • You had a pre-existing medical problem. • A clear explanation was not given of how much PPI you were going to pay, or if it was included in the total loan quote. • You already had cover in place within another policy – life insurance, for example. • You were not informed of the ‘cooling-off’ period.

ContaCting the lender If you no longer have your loan agreement, write to or phone the company concerned. Many larger financial organisations will be able to tell you over the phone whether or not you’ve been sold Payment Protection Insurance. You can also request a copy of your original agreement. Some companies can deal with your entire claim by phone, or online. The Financial Ombudsman Service also has an online questionnaire, and allows you to upload any supporting documents. Otherwise, you should print it off and sent it by recorded delivery after taking a copy for yourself. When the ComPany rePlies you receive a positive response Regular premiums Credit cards and mortgages generally had a regular PPI premium attached, rather than one single premium. If this was the case, you should receive a refund for the premiums paid. If interest had been added, this amount should also be refunded. Single premiums Single PPI premiums were often paid in relation to personal loans and finance agreements. How much you receive depends on whether the loan is still in force: • If your loan is ongoing, the lender will calculate the monthly amount you should have been paying (minus the PPI), and this will be deducted from the total amount

outstanding. • If the loan has been repaid in full, you’ll receive a refund for the amounts you paid. The lender should also calculate a new redemption figure as though the PPI had never been paid, and repay the difference between this and the amount you actually repaid on redemption. if the Claim is rejeCted Should there be no response from the lender within eight weeks, they reject your claim, or you are unhappy with the refunded amount, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service for a decision. This must be done within six months of the lender’s final response to you. It may take up to two years to reach a decision, and any interim offers made by the lender will be forwarded to you. If you’re not happy with the final outcome, you can request that an official ombudsman reviews your case for a second opinion. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ business-36950803 http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/reclaim/ppi-loaninsurance#how http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/cardsloans/article1606455/Reclaim-PPI-premiumspayment-protection-insurance. html https://www.fca.org.uk/consumers/ payment-protection-insurance/ claim-mis-sold-ppi http://www.which.co.uk/consumerrights/advice/i-think-ive-been-missold-ppi-what-should-i-do http://www.which.co.uk/consumerrights/advice/how-to-reclaim-missold-ppi

Rural Crime Month of action on:

T

he Thames Valley Police Rural Partnership is launching a month of action in order to further combat crime in rural areas.

The campaign, which will run throughout this month, will be focusing on combating crimes which affect rural businesses in the Thames Valley, particularly burglaries at non-residential properties such as farm outbuildings, storage units and stables. The campaign is being undertaken by Thames Valley Police alongside its partner agencies. In addition, the Force will continue to work with residents in rural areas who fall victim to burglaries and other crimes. Inspector Andy Thompson of Neighbourhood Policing and Partnerships, who is spearheading the campaign, said: “The Thames Valley area has one of the largest rural populations in the country, and there are many businesses operating within it. This month of action is designed to work against those who target businesses in rural areas, especially those who aim to carry out burglaries at these locations. Rural businesses, including farms, are often targeted by thieves for their equipment, and the costs of being burgled can be very high for business owners. We want to highlight the impact that crime can have on businesses in rural areas, and do everything we can to disrupt those who aim to aim to commit it.” Among the activities taking place this month will be: • A series of property marking events across the region in collaboration with partners such as Datatag and Young Farmers. • Proactive and covert operations taking place in rural locations throughout the Thames Valley. • An online question and answer session on 23 February with police officers and partners answering rural crime questions from members of the public. • Updates on social media using the hashtag #TVPRural, with statistics and videos being shared throughout the month. For a full programme of planned activities, and to find out how you can support the campaign, go to http://releasd.cThom/0904

Tweets from a Robot Graham Iek IT Consultant

T Te c h n o l o g y

witter is the third most popular social media site in the UK after Facebook and You Tube. It has 15 million users nationally and is loved by politicians, celebrities, activists, campaigners and anyone else with any kind of axe to grind. Unlike Facebook and Google, Twitter has never made any serious effort to “monetise its asset,” although it is currently generating over $2 billion a year in revenues, mainly from advertising. The problem is that it is also losing money hand over fist, well over $300 million last year, and that level of losses is simply not sustainable. None of the tech giants are showing any interest in buying Twitter either, despite its longevity and huge number of active users. Compare that to Instagram which was snapped up for $1 billion by Facebook less than two years after its launch. Businesses were quick to spot the potential for marketing their products and services through Twitter and it is now an essential tool in the armoury of any marketing agency. Because marketers are driven by return on investment and constant tweeting eats up a huge amount of time - and time is money, software developers created Twitterbots, programs that automatically send out tweets, retweet other tweets and follow other users. In 2013, research was carried out that suggested that around 20 million Twitter accounts globally were in reality Twitterbots. Although that equated to less than 5% of the worldwide number of accounts at the time, more than half of Twitter accounts are inactive so the true figure would have been over 10%. Also, some Twitterbots are extremely sophisticated in the way they operate so it’s very hard to distinguish them from a real person. The bottom line is, a lot of tweets are generated by robots. Twitter has proved to be relatively ineffective as a marketing tool, which might explain why Twitter’s advertising revenues are less than 4% of

those generated by Google Search. What Twitter is extremely successful at, though, is shaping and influencing political debate. In 2008, Twitter played a key part in helping Barak Obama raise the tens of millions of dollars needed to fund his run at the presidency. In 2011, Twitter was cited as being hugely influential in triggering the uprisings that comprised the Arab Spring. In the last year, Twitter as well as Facebook has been a major driver of public opinion in both the EU referendum and the US presidential election. Twitter is the source of much of the fake news we hear so much about. Recent research by University College London has identified the existence of huge networks of robots operating on Twitter, one with 350,000 linked accounts and another with potentially half a million. These networks are extremely sophisticated, which is why they have gone undetected until now. Strangely, one of the defining features of the accounts is that they send tweets including quotes from the Star Wars novels. The potential impact of these networks is hard to exaggerate. For instance, they can be programmed to retweet or “favourite” Tweets on a particular political topic and follow users who tweet about that topic. They can also be used to dilute a trending topic by flooding Twitter with tweets on an unrelated subject. The bulk of tweets are posted by a relatively small number of “super users” and this has the effect of amplifying the impact of the networks. The people who founded Twitter had the admirable aim of providing a global voice for its users. Perhaps this is why they and the vocal community of nearly a third of a billion people they created have shunned the pursuit of commercial success and the profits it generates. It now appears that the social media giant is being manipulated by shadowy organisations controlling huge networks of Twitterbots to achieve unknown objectives. It is hard to imagine something more at odds with the aims of Twitter’s users and creators.

Beguiled by BASILICATA I

Travel

magine you’re a contestant on the popular quiz show, Pointless, and you’re asked to name a region of Italy. There could be a number of pointless answers here, although I’d be pretty certain of progressing to the next round by saying Basilicata. “Where?” I hear you ask. Picture the map of the boot of Italy. Forming the instep nestling between the heel (Puglia) and the toes (Calabria), Basilicata stretches up to meet Campania some distance south of the Amalfi coast. The region does not have its own major airport so travel is via Bari, Brindisi or, in my case, Naples. Despite some reasonable roads, it’s definitely one of the more off-the-beaten track regions of Italy. After leaving Naples, I called briefly into the regional capital, Potenza, a rather stern industrial city (which admittedly looked worse in the torrential rain which greeted my arrival). I continued towards the gentle curve of the Ionian Sea coast where, by the time I arrived, the sun was shining, and I celebrated with an ice cream at the excellent Gelateria Lucarelli. I rented an old farmhouse just outside the town of Montalbano Jonico, surrounded by orange and olive groves. Montalbano is a working town about 4 miles inland. The historic part was well worth a wander on foot to appreciate the views across the fertile Agri valley below the slowly eroding clay clifftops. A warning - do not drive into the old town, as you’re likely to need some help getting out again. This part of Italy is agricultural, family oriented and the cuisine is more homely than fancy. The white sands of the Ionian coast provide for great beaches stretching from Metaponto (if you’re a historian, don’t miss the remains of the old Greek settlement here) to Policoro. The latter is my top tip for a leisurely summer’s evening stroll along the promenade with the locals, boasting pop-up restaurants, bars and clubs into the early

hours. The Pizzeria Eraclea pop-up was a welcome recommendation from my hosts, although Il Terrazzino restaurant at Marina di Pisticci was a hands-down winner in the food stakes. The essential must see is the Sassi district of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of hundreds of small houses and churches dug out of the rock, which provided the setting for the controversial film, the Passion of the Christ. Spend a few hours wandering up and down the narrow alleyways, stairways and other walkways and you won’t regret it. I truly struggle to think of anywhere in Europe that has taken my breath away to this extent. Less than an hour from Matera is the hilltop ghost town of Craco, abandoned after a series of natural disasters in the 1960s. Another day trip was to Monte Sirino in the Lucan Apennines National Park towards the north of the region. This is a popular ski resort in winter, littleknown outside Italy, which in summer appeals to those who want to cool down a little and also to experienced hikers. If you can find the haunting Lago Laudemio lake, the numbers of goldfish swimming in its remarkably shallow waters will amaze you. They say you save the best until last, and this was unwittingly true in my case. Making my way back towards Naples, I detoured over to Basilicata’s short but striking coastal stretch on the Tyrrhenian sea, centred around Maratea. Whilst the beaches are somewhat rockier than the white sand on the Ionian coast, this doesn’t put anyone off. The azure sea and the linear developments along the coastline are all overlooked by the statue of Christ the Redeemer, although this is no Rio de Janeiro. The small harbour is classy and subtle and I treated myself to a fantastic final night seafood supper at the sublime Lanterna Rosso restaurant overlooking the harbour at Porto di Maratea. Basilicata, you may not score much on Pointless, but you get full marks from me!

EESE ETURNS Reese Witherspoon is back, and this time, she’s in control.

“I want to be

able to express myself – to create shows like this to show how important women are in our world,” declares a radiant Reese Witherspoon about her latest project – Big Little Lies – a new seven-part HBO series based on the eponymous best-seller by Australian novelist Liane Moriarty. Set in an affluent seaside town along the coast of California, the dramedy lifts the veil on the seemingly perfect lives of a group of mothers – revealing love trysts, lies and maybe even murder. “I feel like it was such a unique opportunity to have women at every age and of every colour talking about motherhood. That is the common denominator.” she says. As the mother of Ava, 17, and Deacon, 13, – from her first marriage to Ryan Philippe – plus Tennessee, four, with husband Jim Toth, the 40-year-old is keen to promote an authentic and sincere portrait of women with children.

“What was great about reading the novel for the first time is that I saw myself in different stages of motherhood all through my life,” chirps Witherspoon. “I was a mum at 22, I’ve been divorced, I’ve been re-married... they showed every spectrum and colour of a woman’s life.” So how does an A-list superstar go about casting a gang of gorgeous, glamorous women? By calling on her equally fabulous Hollywood pals, of course. Initially approaching Nicole Kidman to co-produce, it was decided at the request of writer Moriarty that Kidman and Witherspoon would both produce and star in the show, playing Celeste and Madeline respectively, along with Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoë Kravitz. “I’ve had so many conversations over the years with very talented actress friends, and I constantly see women of incredible talent playing wives and girlfriends in thankless parts. I’d just had enough... you can’t imagine the level of exasperation that comes with having to compete for terrible parts in terrible movies,” she says, throwing her hands up. “For 25 years, I’ve been the only woman on set. They call it the Smurfette Syndrome: there’s 100 male Smurfs around and only one woman. But together with Nicole and Laura, we nurtured each other’s performances. It’s really a collective performance for all of us.”

co-star Phillippe, after rumours of his repeated infidelity, also took a toll on her spirit and confidence. Eventually, salvation came from an unexpected place: Hollywood CAA agent Jim Toth. The handsome exec swept her off her feet and married her in March 2011. Witherspoon recalls: “Jim said, ‘I’m going to show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I’m going to take care of you. I’m going to do this so much that you’re going to get used to it.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ I’ve never had anybody like that in my life!”

Despite her bright and bubbly veneer, Witherspoon has been deeply hurt in the past and has fought long and hard to stay on top, having struggled to overcome her image as the archetypal effervescent southern belle. Domestic abuse – recognise the signs Over their lifetime, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experienced some form of domestic abuse (Office of National Statistics, 2014). This means that someone you know - a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour could be at risk. This month Citizens Advice Chiltern looks at gender violence and abuse (GVA), and how you can recognise the signs. Q

I noticed my sister seems frightened and less confident. What can I do if I think she may be experiencing abuse?

A

If you think a family member or friend may be experiencing domestic abuse:  Pay attention to changes in behaviour  Start a conversation  Listen, support and believe  Suggest further help Physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse is never OK and never the victim’s fault. Your local adviser at Citizens Advice Chiltern can help identify the problem and explore available options. Call 01494 545991 or check our website to find your local office for drop ins or appointments. You can also get help from the following: Wycombe Women’s Aid 01494 461367 National Domestic Violence Helpline 0808 2000 247 Rape Crisis (Wycombe, Chiltern and South Bucks) 01494 462222

Q

I am seeing an adviser at Citizens Advice about a debt problem but I’m finding it difficult to get my head round it as my partner is being nasty to me. What should I do?

A

Gender violence and abuse is often a hidden part of the reason why someone seeks help at Citizens Advice. It can be a factor in any enquiry, for instance, about debt, benefits, housing or relationships. Advisers are trained to give clients the opportunity to disclose gender violence or abuse including financial abuse. This can help empower clients and further options for help can be explored.
