“Too often we underestimate the power of touch. A smile. A kind word. A listening ear. An honest compliment.Or the smallest act of caring. All of which have the potential to turn a life around.” - Leo Buscaglia

elcome to February 2017 – the month of romance and love!

14th February is Valentine’s Day, a festival which has been celebrated in the United Kingdom for centuries, with the giving of flowers and cards to lovers becoming commonplace in the 18th century. The original story of St Valentine is one shrouded in layers of myth. Valentine was a 3rd century Christian martyr, whose life is obscure but has been embellished by legend. One such tale told how St Valentine clandestinely performed marriages for Roman soldiers, who were banned from matrimony at the time. As romantic as this is, it is entirely unsubstantiated – Roman soldiers at the time were actively encouraged to marry! Leaving aside the world of romance, February marks the start of the transition between winter and spring. The official flowers of February are the violet and wild primrose – both of which can be seen in hedgerows at this time of year – so look out for them when you are out and about! Falling on 28th February this year is Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday marks the final day before the fasting season of Lent, and as such was traditionally the last day on which perishable rich foods such as dairy products and meat could be eaten. The tradition of using up these foods evolved into a more secular festival, celebrated by the eating of pancakes and communal games such as pancake tossing and pancake races. So whether you are exchanging romantic gifts or eating pancakes be sure to wrap up warm as the cold spell is upon us! Till next time. Is That a Digital Hub or Just an Echo?

Te c h n o l o g y

Amazon has recently launched the Echo; you may have seen it advertised on TV. It really is a clever device; it incorporates a high quality 360-degree speaker, a microphone and voice control software. It’s also connected to the internet and Bluetooth. It would be easy to think that this is just a hi fi for people who are too lazy to pick up a remote control or even their phone, but it’s much more than that. Yes, it will stream music from Amazon Music, Spotify and other online music libraries on command. It will also play music from iTunes or Google Play, although you’ll have to use your phone to make that happen. In addition, it will remind you to put the bin out, turn up the heating, dim the lights or add some dog food to your shopping list. It all sounds great but you’ll need a few things to be in place before you can take advantage of all these wonderful features – obviously, you’ll need to have an Amazon Music account and pay the subscription fee. You’ll need a smart thermostat and a smart lighting controller too, though I’m sure you can buy both these things off Amazon. Unfortunately, the Echo won’t just write a shopping list on a piece of paper or send you a text while you’re wandering around Sainsbury’s, you’ll need to buy your groceries from Amazon to make use of this feature. I think you might be able to see where I’m going with this. Google has also introduced a similar device called Google Home. It does all the same things that an Echo does, with the exception that Google doesn’t sell groceries (yet) so you can’t use it to buy dog biscuits. It also has access to Google search so you can ask it questions about pretty much anything – handy for cheating at Pointless – and you can stream movies and videos from Google Play to your TV, providing it is fitted with Chrome Cast of course. Apple is getting in on the act as well with

10

a rival device based on its HomeKit software system. A prototype has already entered testing so you can expect to see a product on the shelf sometime this year. While the media is dubbing these devices smart speakers, both Amazon and Google insist that they are much more than that, they are in fact the hub of the digital home. Both use proprietary voice control systems, Alexa in the case of Amazon and Google assistant for Google. To describe these systems as voice control is rather unfair; even the term digital assistant does not do them justice. They are as close to Artificial Intelligence as you can get at the moment and both systems actually learn from your interaction with them and with other devices and software. If intelligence was based solely on memory, these things would be the smartest guy in the room. When the Apple device becomes available, it will come equipped with the Siri system that kicked off the whole digital assistant trend in the first place. What both the Echo and Google Home do is to take lots of bits of technology, such as voice control, wireless speakers and music streaming, and put it all together into one clever device. If you think about it, that’s what Apple did with the first iPhone but the difference is that these gadgets are very affordable – the Echo costs just under £130 and Google Home is around £10 cheaper. But don’t be fooled, they are not really digital hubs; most people who buy them will not have smart heating controls or any other smart home appliances. What they actually are is another clever way of getting you to buy ever more stuff, be it music, movies or dog biscuits, from one of the competing online giants.

S Travel

o, Christmas is over, we’re well into the New Year and all the resolutions for diets, exercise clubs and quitting bad habits have already been broken. In their place, now is the time when most people decide on where to go on their summer holiday. A lot of people ask me what’s my favourite destination of all time? With my job, I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world so this is a very hard question to answer, but we all have that favourite place, a place we dream of retiring to. Ours is the Greek island of Kefalonia (also spelt Cephalonia). It was made famous by the book Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, a love story set on the island. The movie was actually filmed on the island too. Kefalonia is part of the Ionian island chain which lies to the east of the heel of Italy, a flight time of only three and a half hours from the UK. Surrounded by crystal clear seas, the interior is rugged and hilly but also fertile and green - it’s a real gem. The capital, Argostoli, is about a twentyminute drive from the airport and is still a working harbour port. If you visit early in the morning when the fishing boats come in, you should be lucky enough to see the native turtles popping up for any scraps the fishermen throw overboard. There are also dolphins further off shore, which you can see if you take one of the many boat excursions. The island has many points of interest; one of my favourites is Myrtos beach which is world famous and postcard perfect. Or you can take the ferry from Argostoli over to the resort of Lixouri with its art galleries and jewellery and coffee shops; I never come back empty handed. A canal ride through the Melissani caves with their glittering waters and cave walls is breathtaking and a visit to Fiskardo port is well worth making as well; its old

Venetian style buildings and the restaurants by the harbour side are just lovely. Also unmissable is the Monastery of Agios Gerasimos, the patron saint of the island. With its gilded walls and wealth of art and frescos, it is an architecture lover’s dream. Follow it up with a stop at the nearby winery which makes good use of the abundant vineyards on the island. We normally take self-catering accommodation; we take advantage of the local produce for breakfast and lunch and eat out in the evening. Shopping is fantastic on the island - local bakeries, delis and butchers offer some delicious treats. Of particular note are the local lemons, watermelons, grapes, olives and feta cheese… and the pastries are divine! In the evening, we don’t have any set rules, we just go with the flow which is easy to do on this island as you are never hassled when looking through the menus. Sometimes we will go for the catch of the day; my husband loves the swordfish. Sometimes we just have a Gyros (a delicious flatbread filled with chicken, salad and tzatziki). At least once on every holiday, we’ll go all out and have a traditional Greek Meze, a little bit like tapas, where you get lots of little portions of the lovely Greek food accompanied by a carafe of local wine; we are always happily stuffed to the gills at the end. I suppose the main reason I love the island, apart from all of the above, is the people. The Greeks are so hospitable, family-orientated and genuinely love getting to know you and you getting to know them. We see the same faces each time we visit. In the fast-paced society in which we live, I feel like I escape for just a little while and return to a calmer era. So yes, I will be dreaming of Kefalonia during these cold months and I’m hoping to see her again very soon.

Gum Disease

This month we talk to Dr Kalpesh Bavisha who is a specialist Periodontistat the Award Winning Rosebank Dental Practice in Chorleywood What is a Periodontist and why would I get referred to one?

Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease. They are also known as gum specialists. Your dentist has decided that your gums require this special care. By referring you to a periodontist, your dentist is showing a strong commitment to ensuring the best possible dental care for you. To help you understand why specialist treatment might be needed, and how your teeth can be saved, this question & answers will tell you about some of the most frequently asked questions about gum treatment.

What are the signs of gum disease?

The signs of gum disease are bleeding, swollen gums, bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth, and gaps appearing between teeth, pus and eventual tooth loss. Gum disease is not always painful and therefore often goes unnoticed and undiagnosed. It may only become evident at an advanced stage, after loss of bone and gum.

What causes gum disease?

Bacteria (plaque), growing under the gums around your teeth, lead to gum disease. If left long enough, the plaque may solidify and form hard infected deposits on the tooth called calculus (tartar). If the infection persists then the gums detach from the tooth to form a pocket, with loss of jawbone and the ligaments that anchor the tooth to the jawbone. Unless treated, the tooth will become loose; you may end up losing the tooth.

What is the purpose of gum treatment? Can gum disease be cured? The main purpose of treating your gums is to remove infection and prevent further gum and bone damage. Techniques are available to regenerate lost gum and bone around diseased teeth.

What does gum treatment involve? How important is it to treat now or can I wait?

Most treatment first involves scaling & deep cleaning of infected roots (placing a thin instrument between the gum and tooth). This is commonly referred to as nonsurgical treatment. Your gums can be numbed for this, if

necessary for your comfort. Many areas in your mouth can be expected to respond favourably. It is best to stop the disease process with treatment sooner rather than later. This helps to prevent further irreversible loss of your gums & bone. The number of visits needed depends on how much disease you have. It is also essential to help you with your plaque control.

Does gum treatment hurt? Will I need to take time off work after I have had treatment?

No, modern techniques and equipment make gum treatment more comfortable now than ever before. Effective medications are available if needed to give you comfort after treatment without the need to take time off work. Our priority is to make your treatment a positive experience and as comfortable as possible.

How much will treatment cost and what are the benefits?

The cost of treatment will vary depending upon your needs.

After the periodontist has examined you and decided on the best recommendation for treatment, or whether you may benefit from something like dental implants, he will provide you with a treatment plan and an estimate of the cost. As you consider this health investment, keep in mind that treating gum disease is less costly and better for your health than replacing teeth lost because of gum disease. Treating gum problems will help achieve a healthy mouth and help prevent tooth loss.

What happens after my treatment? Will I be free from more gum disease

Good plaque control at home and regular gum checkups are essential to keep gum health. Once you have demonstrated good plaque control and your tissues have responded favourably, you should return to your dentist for continued general dental health care maintenance. Thank you Dr Bavisha for taking the time to talk to our readers.

Don’t swim with the Loan Sharks if money is tight! They never let you go!

A

fter the Christmas and New Year Sales Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council is asking people to think again before borrowing money to avoid debt spiralling out of control.

At this time of year it is all too easy to get persuaded to use high cost ‘buy now pay later' catalogues, payday loans, doorstep lenders and even loan sharks. All these sources of credit will lead to high interest rates and in the case of loan sharks, intimidation and possibly harm. Check out the following advice:• Most loan sharks start out friendly, but their behaviour changes when payments are missed. • Few loan sharks advertise; they are often heard of by word of mouth. • Most loan sharks offer little or no paperwork. • Many loan sharks will refuse to tell you how much you owe, how long you will be paying off the debt or what the interest rate is. • Many loan sharks will increase the debt and add additional amounts. • Many loan sharks take items as security including passports, bank cards or benefit cards. • Many loan sharks resort to intimidation, threats and violence. REMEMBER if you have borrowed from a loan shark you have not committed a crime, they have. If you do need a loan, you could join your local credit union, M for Money. Credit unions offer safer, affordable loans to people who may turn to high-risk borrowing like payday lenders. It provides excellent value for savers, and the community bank also helps support people with poor credit history, or those who find managing their finances difficult, to prevent them falling prey to loan sharks and high-interest loan companies. The scheme enables members to save small amounts at favourable rates of interest, and borrow when necessary.

You can join the credit union at www.m4mcu.org or emailing admin@m4m.cu.org or phoning 020 8756 3866. If you believe you have borrowed from a loan shark, contact the England Illegal Money Lending Team in confidence. The team can be contacted, by phoning the 24/7 confidential hotline on 0300 222 5555, by email to reportaloanshark@stoploansharks.gov.uk or you can find out more from the webpage which is www.direct.gov.uk/stoploansharks (Opens in a new window). Before committing to ‘borrow’ always read the small print. Ask any lender to explain the total cost of paying back the money borrowed, including any hidden charges.

homecoming jonny lee miller

Twenty years since the cult crime caper first exploded into cinema history, Jonny Lee Miller and some old pals are preparing for the biggest reunion in British film to date…

I

t’s been twenty years since heroinaddict indie flick Trainspotting catapulted five of Scotland’s best-known cinematic exports to stardom, and it’s finally time for the cult classic’s legions of fans to get the sequel they have clamoured for ever since. Possibly the most hotlyawaited sequel in the history of British film, T2 will once again see master director Danny Boyle working with his four most famous charges – Ewan McGregor’s Renton, Jonny Lee Miller’s Sick Boy, Ewan Bremner’s Spud and Robert Carlyle’s psychopathic Begbie. McGregor went on to blockbuster fare, and Boyle scooped a deserved Academy Award 36

for 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire. Miller meanwhile set about busying himself on both the small screen and the stage – a performance alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Frankenstein at the National drew particularly effusive praise – eventually coming to rest in the U.S where he has been playing a modern-day Manhattan-based version of Sherlock Holmes. It was during the filming of Elementary – now in its fifth season – when Miller received the postcard that announced the arrival of a sequel that has since sent fans of Boyle’s iconic 1996 black comedy into raptures. “I got it here in New York,” says the 44-year-old. “It said: We’re going to have a go at T2 and will send you a script when we have one soon. I got the script and thought it was pretty good and I heard the other guys liked it too. That was a matter of months before we started. It was a pretty quick process for me.” And though more than two decades have passed since we last saw Miller as the amoral con-man Simon ‘Sick Boy’ Williamson, it was business as usual for Boyle and his boys as soon as they hit the set. “It’s very much the same; it’s about rehearsals and preparation,” he reveals. “Danny flew out to New York to visit me with the script and we sat down and read through it and we’d talk about it and I’d give him some ideas and then he’d go back to the writer and incorporate those - or just his ideas from hearing you read it out loud.

LOS ANGELES - NOV 12: JONNY LEE MILLER & MICHELE HICKS arriving to MOCA Annual Gala 2011 on November 12, 2011 in Los Angeles, CA

“He’s very visual,” Miller continues. “We got together and sat down and rehearsed the scenes and he shows us pictures he’s got boards of pictures up on the walls of the production office. I would watch movies, the same as we did the first time - he’d get us to watch movies together that might have something to do with our story, however small.” All the elements that made its cinematic elder sibling regularly voted one of the best British films of all time can be seen in T2 – including the iconic soundtrack, with Miller stating that “Rick Smith from Underworld has been involved from day one.”

Much like the original, however, fans shouldn’t hold out hope for a fun-filled return for the unscrupulous Sick Boy. “The years haven’t been to kind on him,” concludes Miller. “He’s not really developed too much as a person…” 37 To advertise please call 01494 725878 or email info@localdirectoryltd.co.uk

Caramelised

Onion & Goats’ Cheese Pizza Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

Recipe

This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix • 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved

TIP

Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.

38

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

BEAT THE NEW YEAR BURGLAR

Now that Christmas is over many of us make New Year resolutions. Try this one for a quick and easy way to protect your property.

T

hink about how many new things you have. It would be wise to mark any new items you have received. Property marking is a way to help protect your belongings by deterring burglars and help the Police trace and return stolen property. Deter would be thieves by marking your property with your postcode and house or flat number (or the first three letters of the house name). Then, if your property is stolen it will be much easier to trace, as it can be positively identified as yours. Take a good look around every room in your home as well as your garage or shed. Consider all the things you would be sorry to lose or find hard to replace - then MARK THEM. Anything useful or attractive is resalable. For instance, all your electrical and mechanical goods, household appliances, furniture, pictures, ornaments, antiques and silver, in fact anything can be a target for thieves. New Bicycles and ones you have already can be marked . (Contact Community Safety on 01494 8586535 for advice where to get this done) Using forensic marking products such as SmartWater and Selecta DNA are also a highly effective way to mark property. A liquid solution is applied giving items either a chemical or DNA code depending on the product used, which is unique to the owner. The solution cannot be seen by the naked eye and is incredibly difficult to remove. It glows under ultraviolet light, allowing the police to detect it. If you would like to purchase these products please email the community safety team at communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk .

40

Once you have marked your property it is best to record the details on an inventory form. Make a list of your valuables and their value which can be used for insurance purposes. It helps if you can take a photo of your jewellery and other marked belongings, as if the worst was to happen and they were stolen, it can be remarkably difficult to describe them to someone else. If you would like a FREE UV pen email communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk please note pens are limited to one per household and subject to availability). It pays to show you are "Property Marked". Stickers placed anywhere a burglar might force an entry provide a very effective deterrent, and are also available free from the Community Safety Team. To avoid becoming a victim, follow the guidance on our websites:

Worried about debts? The demand for money and debt advice from Citizens Advice is highest in January and February. The beginning of the year is a good time to take stock of your finances and think about your priorities for the year ahead and for the future. Q

I recently lost my job and fell behind on several bills including my council tax, electricity and credit cards. I’m back in work and keen to start paying off my debts, but can’t afford to pay them all straight away. What should I pay off first? First off, draw up a list of who you owe money to, how much you owe, and which of these are ‘priority debts’. Priority debts include your rent or mortgage, gas and electricity, and council tax. These debts should always be paid first as delaying payment can have serious consequences such as having your energy supply cut off, or losing your home. You can use any spare income to tackle your credit cards and other non-priority debts. To work out exactly how much you can afford to repay, you’ll need to compare your monthly income to your essential outgoings and see how much money you’ve got leftover to put towards your debts. Citizens Advice has an online budget tool which can help. Visit our debt advice pages at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money You’re now ready to start negotiations with your creditor. Put together a letter explaining why your ability to repay has been affected, including a full breakdown of your monthly income and outgoings (known as a financial statement), and what you think you can pay. Send this letter to your creditors and they will use the information to help set up an affordable repayment plan with you. For more guidance on putting together your budget and financial statement contact your local Citizens Advice office. WANTED!

Host Families for Children from Belarus Host families needed for children aged 10-12yrs from 03/07-31/7. We organise a daytime activity programme for them avoiding hosts needing to take leave to look after the children. Typically families host for 2 or 4 weeks Why? The heavy radioactive contamination from the Chernobyl reactor

disaster in 1986 still affects Belarus’s food chain and environment, causing health issues. The break allows the children to eat and live in a clean environment boosting their immune systems and general health. By hosting you can make a real difference to their lives and have fun too!
