Quote of the Month “Springtime flowers bloom like colorful arrows piercing their way to the sun” - Terri Guillemets

t is April already! This month sees the feast day of England’s patron saint, as St George’s Day falls on 23rd April. Whilst the commemoration of St George’s Day is relatively recent when compared with the long traditions of the saints’ days of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, there is one celebration which is peculiar to the English celebration. Popular in Lancashire and West Yorkshire in the modern day, ‘Pace Egg’ plays were historically performed across England at Easter time, and featured St George as the hero. Easter itself falls on 17th April this year; a late celebration which hopefully means brighter weather. The Easter egg is synonymous with modern observance of Easter, but has a long tradition going back centuries. Arguably the most luxurious Easter eggs were those crafted by Fabergé for the Russian Tsars in the 19th century. The first Fabergé egg was made of gold, and contained a little golden hen which opened to reveal a diamond replica of the imperial crown. Always a celebration marked by feasting, it is perhaps no surprise that the egg theme of Easter extended into food. The first chocolate Easter egg was introduced in Britain in 1873 by the company J.S. Fry. In the modern day over 80 million Easter Eggs are sold every year in Britain! Of course, Easter is marked in the UK by a four-day Bank Holiday weekend, so make the most of it by enjoying the warmer weather – and maybe some chocolate, too!

As the lane nears the top of the hill, turn right into Longfield Wood. Follow the white arrows on the trees through the Wood, staying on the main path for c1,500m until it meets a tall wood and wire stock fence on the left. Do not go through the gap, instead turn left and follow the edge of the field with the hedge on the right.

5. After c250m two footpaths join from the right. Take the second of these paths heading through the kissing gate. d, My New Best Frien

the Chatbot

by Graham Iek

A Te c h n o l o g y

s soon as Apple put the finishing touches to Siri, it was only a matter of time before there was an explosion in chatbots, apps that enable you to converse with a computer. Siri uses voice recognition software to identify keywords and then provides information that ties in with that keyword; for instance, it links umbrella with rain and gives you the weather forecast. You don’t need complex and expensive voice recognition technology to create a chatbot though; text messages work just as well, if not better, and most independent developers are working with established messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger and Viber to develop their programs. This kind of AI technology has been around since the mid-nineties and large organisations have been using it for more than a decade to filter phone calls into their customer services departments. A good example of this is a financial service company using an automated service to guide a caller through security checks before they are put through to an operator. However, the kind of app that allows consumers to access useful information in the real world is a recent development. Facebook only opened its Messenger platform up to outside developers in April last year, but already there are over 34,000 chatbot apps that use the service. Globally there are tens of thousands already in existence although, interestingly, developers are not allowed to develop chatbots for WhatsApp, which is also now owned by Facebook. The theory is that Facebook wants to maintain WhatsApp as a “pure” messaging service. Chatbots are put to a bewildering array of uses, providing information on anything from the weather to sports teams to current affairs. The problem is that the vast majority of them are universally useless. They either don’t work, are pointless or provide a solution that is vastly inferior to other ways of accessing the information. Take the popular weather chatbot Poncho; it looks the part but it will usually tell you that it’s going to rain five minutes after the heavens have opened. You’d be much better off asking Siri if you need to take an umbrella to work. There’s been a lot of coverage in the media about an app called Christopher Bot. Developed by a 14-year-old Canadian schoolboy using Facebook Messenger, it helps kids keep on top of their

10 12

homework. It’s quirky, appealing and very effective and I’m sure it will be a big success. Unfortunately, chatbots like Christopher Bot are few and far between. There’s a reason that chatbots are getting so much interest at the moment. The market for conventional smartphone apps, supplied through marketplaces such as App Store and Google Play, has plateaued and 25% of Apps purchased are only opened once after they have been downloaded. At the same time, Facebook is widely tipped to be launching its own version of App Store and the apps it will market will largely be chatbots. If all goes to plan, chatbots will reinvigorate the market for third party developers, creating a whole new economy for small scale software entrepreneurs. Could this provide the launch pad for the next Google, Snapchat or Facebook? There is a big question mark over this scenario though. To be successful, any type of software has to solve a problem. Not only that, it has to solve the problem more efficiently than other solutions out there. The current frenzy to develop chatbots seems to be driven by the belief that they are the next big thing and if you don’t get a product out there now, someone else will. Few chatbot developers seem to be even asking themselves what problem they are trying to solve. When they do, they often provide a solution that is far worse than the alternatives – the CNN chatbot is a good example. Good as Christopher Bot is, kids have been managing their homework for years using anything from a diary to a knotted handkerchief. I’m yet to be convinced. Local when responding

A Staycati

on in the F orest

Written by: Rhiann Hill | Travel Counsellor

A

Travel

s you might guess, January and February are my busiest months. People love to make their holiday plans at the start of the year so they have something to look forward to. I am often working well into the night and dashing about all over the place to see my customers! Also, my husband works for a slimming company so he is in the same boat; lots of new members and offers to promote and, by March, we are normally completely worn out. However, this year that is definitely not the case!

We decided to book a domestic mini break for the end of January, a Friday to Sunday deal. Better still, far from driving for hours as we usually do in the summer, we settled on our home county, the beautiful Nottinghamshire. It may seem strange to only travel for 15 minutes in order to go on holiday but the average driving time on a weekend break is less than 35 minutes and, with more than 65% of us now taking a domestic holiday each year, I thought there must be something we were missing out on; we normally take coastal holidays when we have a break in the UK. I chose a log cabin at an activity park, nestled near Rufford Abbey Country park. We arrived at the site, having stocked up from a nearby supermarket and were warmly greeted and checked into our cabin. With a lovely little log burner, central heating, two good sized bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and living area, it offered the perfect amount of space for our little family. The views on both sides were of beautiful woodland, with squirrels and robins so tame they’d come right up to the windows, a real treat for my son who loves drawing wildlife. The park had lots of activities - zorbing, mini golf, walks and a swimming pool - but we thought, as we were in Robin Hood country, we’d have a go

814

at archery. The tuition was really good and we all managed to hit the target and some of us even managed to pop balloons that were attached to it, as my son never tires of reminding me of! We also took advantage of the woodland walks, so by night time we were exhausted. I made us an evening meal and then we got ready for bed and sat by the crackling log burner, all warm and cosy; it was bliss. After a hearty breakfast we decided to have a walk around Rufford Abbey, feeding the ducks on the lake and stopping for a nice coffee in the cafe. After returning to our park, we felt it was time to have a dip in the swimming pool, though I’ll admit this was more to take advantage of the mini Jacuzzi on my part. Again, wrapped around the burner, we all slept like logs. It was only as we were leaving the next day that we both realised we hadn’t been on our phones for the last two and a half days; we hadn’t constantly checked our emails, social media pages or texts. We felt thoroughly relaxed, refreshed and in tune with each other again. So, as March comes, that exhausted feeling isn’t looming and the only question about domestic holidays we have is which county next?

Neighbourhood Watch There is still a need for

South Bucks District Council and Chiltern District Council are accvely promoong new and revitalised Neighbourhood Watch Schemes, especially in areas which have experienced incidents of recent burglary. Leeers inviing residents to start a new scheme are distributed to homes in these roads. Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevennon iniiaaves. Behind it lies a simple idea: -

Geeng together with your neighbours to take accon can cut local crime.

Everyone knows that the police are there to fight crime, but they need your help to do an effeccve job. Neighbourhood Watch is all about an accve partnership with the police.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes can:

• Cut crime and the opportuniies for crime • Help and reassure those who live in the area, especially those who are vulnerable • Encourage neighbourliness and closer communiies En

Create a beeer place to live, work and play.

• Neighbourhood Watch is not just about reducing burglary figures - it’s about creaang communiies who care. It brings local people together and can make a real contribuuon to improving their lives. • The accvity of Watch members can foster a new community spirit and a belief in the community’s ability to tackle problems. At the same me, you feel secure, knowing your neighbours are watching out for you and your property.

What can Neighbourhood Watch schemes do? Wh

These are the key steps to targeeng and reducing crime and the fear of crime in an area. In consultaaon with your local police: • Get a picture of local crime • Conduct a ‘fear of crime’ survey • Target crimes you can have a real impact on • Idennfy the opportuniies for crime • Form an accon plan to tackle the problem • Block or reduce opportuniies for the criminal. If you are serious about geeng involved in Neighbourhood Watch and live in the South Bucks District Council or Chiltern District Council areas then contact: Community Safety on 01494 586535 or email communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk.

Gardening

G

By Jonathan Wild ardens can be seriously dangerous places. Thankfully, I’ve survived a lifetime of getting down and dirty and only notched up one visit to A&E when a pane of glass from a greenhouse decided to wedge itself in my leg. I also remember my Dad nearly chopping his toe off in the lawnmower (no idea how he managed that!) and my poor old tortoise met his watery end in the pond. Aside from that, touch wood, my family has survived and our children continue to thrive, even though I regularly expose them to a whole host of exotic flora and fauna! Regrettably, not everyone gets off so lightly and there are many horror stories of people succumbing not only to hideous accidents with power tools and the like, but also from seemingly innocuous plants in the flower borders. Gardeners have been killed by simply handling the “Queen of Poisons,” Aconite, and there are many other plants that will more than ruin your day.

in case you fancied a snack of Mandrake, Deadly Night Shade, Yew and Poison Ivy followed by the fruits of Laurels. Yummy! Of course, as sensible adults (?!) we know better than to simply go round the garden grazing on every leaf, flower and colourful berry that presents itself. I think (or rather hope) that every parent or carer has heard of the toxicity of Laburnum seeds, but there are many others that could either kill or seriously injure a child who eats them. Pets aren’t safe either and cats and dogs are just as much at risk from poisoning – have a Google and you’ll be amazed at the huge list of potential baddies that we plant in our gardens. Unfortunately, a lot of these plants such as Lilies, Daffodils and Lily of the Valley are so deceptively attractive that you wouldn’t consider them a threat to anyone or anything! Please don’t think I’m advocating banning potentially poisonous plants from our gardens as a lot of them are really stunning and useful and I’m certainly not a supporter of the Nanny State. No, what we all need to be is AWARE that there are dangers and take reasonable means to avoid accidents, such as giving children their own safe area to grow plants that you know aren’t harmful and giving your pet its own safe grazing area. You can buy seeds of Asian pasture grass or intermediate wheatgrass from pet shops, and Fido and Tiddles will be over the moon with their very own salad bar to chomp on. Also, try avoiding picking and eating ‘edible’ flowers in front of the kids, unless you fancy a quick dash to the nearest A&E when they choose something that isn’t on the right list.

I was attacked by something while working in a very well stocked border last year; my arm immediately became inflamed and I was virtually incapacitated for a couple of days. I retraced my journey through the border and spotted what had caused the reaction – a dastardly giant Hogweed plant. By nature this is extremely strong, grows up to 2.5 metres and can look very architectural, but it has no place in any sane gardener’s plot! A couple of years ago, I got up close to my nemesis in the Poison Garden at Alnwick Castle – well worth a visit if you fancy learning about some really deadly plants. They’ve laid it out in a really clever way and add to the susMind how you go! pense by only allowing you entry if you are escorted by one of theirmention “experts,” The presumably just Local when responding to adverts 26 Please Chalfonts

By enlissng the help of local businesses and organisaaons the scheme provides a safe haven for vulnerable residents when they are out in their communiies. The local providers of the scheme give reassurance to vulnerable people and their families and carers so that they have a safe way to alert someone of a potennal risk or emergency if they are out alone. These aare some comments from users of the scheme:-

“Makes me feel like I am part of my town.”

“It encourages me to come out on my own.”

Many of the exissng safe places are restaurants, smaller local shops, banks, building socieees, estate agents, chemists or libraries, all familiar places to many vulnerable people. Staff will be shown how to assist someone asking for help and are supported by the Community Safety team.

Contact the Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council’s Community Safety Team on 01494 586535 or email communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk if you wish to provide a Safe Place for the scheme.

Safe Places are easily idennfied by their scheme sscker which is usually placed in a front window or on the entrance door. Ricotta Stuffed Chicken Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes

Recipe

This recipe is a great way to turn chicken fillets into something special. You can prepare them a couple of hours in advance and keep covered in the fridge, then simply cook when needed.

Ingredients: • 75g ricotta cheese • 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves • 2 tsp finely grated lemon zest • 4 large skinless chicken breast fillets • 12 thin-cut rashers streaky bacon • 5 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • 1tsp Dijon mustard • Pinch of sugar • 100g baby spinach leaves • 2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

TIP

Instead of ricotta you could use low-fat soft cheese such as Philadelphia or a mild and creamy goats’ cheese.

40

Use a sharp knife to make a deep pocket in each chicken fillet, making sure not to cut right the way through. Place the ricotta cheese in a bowl and stir in the thyme leaves and the lemon zest. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place one-quarter of the ricotta mixture in the pocket of each chicken fillet. Use the back of a knife to stretch the bacon rashers. Wrap 3 rashers around each chicken fillet and secure with a metal skewer. Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C Fan, Gas Mark 4. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken fillets over high heat for 2-3 minutes until the bacon is browned, turning once. Transfer to a roasting tin and cook for 35-40 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Cover and leave in a warm place to rest for 10 minutes. To make the dressing, whisk the remaining oil with the vinegar, mustard and sugar in a small jug and season to taste. Slice each chicken fillet into 6 pieces and arrange on the salad leaves. Scatter over the toasted pine nuts and spoon over the dressing. Serve immediately.

HUGH JACKMAN HANGING UP HIS CLAWS ...by Jake Taylor

H

ugh Jackman’s glittering on-screen career has seen him portray the super-mutant Wolverine a mammoth nine times – but with the release of Logan, Jackman is bidding farewell to his most famous and ferocious silver screen creation forever.

After nearly two decades and nine It’s been 17 years since Hugh Jackman appearances as Wolverine Jackman first hit the silver screen as the sidehas decided to relinquish the careerburned super-mutant Wolverine defining character for good, and no in Bryan Singer’s X-Men. Though amount of pleading or cajoling will Jackman has gone on to prove himself get the Sydney-born star to change one of Hollywood’s most bankable his mind. and multi-talented leading men (even going so far as to showcase a sturdy “Everyone always says, never say set of pipes in an Academy Awardnever; I'm saying never,” the 48-yearnominated performance in 2012’s Les old confirms with a smile. “It's a Miserables), the ferocious comic book beautiful movie. To do more would character that gave him his big break throw everything out of whack, and has been a continuous recurrence I don't want to sully this journey throughout his cinematic career – 42 responding adverts andwhen sully this, my love to letter and my until now. Please mention The Chalfonts Local

legacy to the fans. And that's made me more excited about this film than any of the others, if I'm honest. That sounds controversial but it's true.” Jackman’s decision to retire the character in James Manigold’s R-rated Logan already appears a masterstroke. Having quickly garnered acclaim from critics and fans alike, the final chapter of Jackman’s long-standing association with the eponymous Logan has been described by the actor as “perfect.” “This story is about a human, not a superhero, hence why it isn't called ‘Wolverine's Legacy’ or something like that,” he explains. “It's not a comic book movie, it's a very human and intimate story told from the point of view of someone who is terrified of that same humanity and intimacy. “Even when I read the three pages of script that I got for the first time, 18 or 19 years ago when they were looking for their man, I knew he was more than your average superhero. Here was a character who was aligned with his humanity, rather than his mutant abilities. He has hidden emotions and virtues that I didn't know existed in the comic book universe. I always felt like there was a deeper story to tell with Logan, and this is it. That is why it's perfect to me.” Jackman will surely be sorry to see the back of a character he describes as a “best friend”. But there is one element of the role he remains conflicted over – the frequent “punishment” he put his

body through in the gym to attain his stacked superhero physique. “I actually think Logan has prolonged my life expectancy because I've been working out like a maniac for seventeen years,” he laughs. “My waistline would be twice the size it is now if it wasn’t for him, so I'm eternally grateful for that. And it's sort of ingrained, but instead of going to the gym for two hours I'll go for twenty minutes. I'll work out like a normal person now, and I'll eat like a normal person.” And what are the first things an exmutant dines out on once he’s wrapped filming his final and most brutal excursion as Wolverine to date? “Bread and beer!” Jackman laughs. “At the same time, down the hatch. Heaven.”
