Quote of the Month “Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.” - Lewis Grizzard

elcome to Spring! The 20th March is the Vernal Equinox, marking the official start of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. In addition to the start of the lambing season, March is a real explosion of colour in the plant world as daffodils dominate the hedgerows and roadsides. The daffodil is also the symbol of Wales, which celebrates the feast day of their patron saint, St David, on 1st March. Also celebrated in March is St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. His feast day is 17th March, and marked across Ireland by feasting and parades in his honour. The 26th March is a day to remember this month – Mothering Sunday. Traditionally the Sunday when Christians would attend their nearest cathedral or large “mother” church, it is now a day where the role of mothers is celebrated across Britain. The giving of flowers is particularly popular, as are gifts of chocolate and other presents. Mothering Sunday is alternatively known as ‘Simnel Sunday’, being the Sunday when the Lent fast was relaxed. Simnel cake is a light fruit cake, topped with a layer of marzipan and decorated with eleven marzipan balls, which are then toasted to give a golden-brown colour. This year Mothering Sunday is an especially important date to remember, as the clocks go forward by an hour at 2am on the 26th – don’t forget! So whether you are enjoying the beautiful flowers or indulging in fruit cake, enjoy the start of warmer, dryer weather – until next time! If you have any views or feedback on The Local Directory publications please do contact us - email us at info@ localdirectoryltd.co.uk, many thanks for reading. Bu

Mad March Hair

Te c h n o l o g y

Gadgets for grooming, cutting, styling or removing, whatever your gender

When it comes to looking after your hair or getting rid of unwanted hair, there’s no shortage of options - and no wonder, because the beauty market is worth huge sums of money. So it’s hardly surprising to see the likes of Dyson joining the party, albeit with a hairdryer that costs £299. The reviews are excellent, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably hoping to spend something more like £29 on a hairdryer. If that’s the case, keep an eye out for Tourmaline dryers from the usual suspects: it’s a kind of ceramic that enables hair dryers to deliver powerful airflow without leaving your hair looking like it’s been through the tumble dryer. Another great idea comes from late-night TV advertiser JML. Its £39.99 Simply Straight brush is a heated ceramic brush that promises to combine two essential items: your brush and straighteners. According to the Mirror it works really well - it’s not quite as effective as separate brushes and straighteners, but it comes awfully close and is very, very quick. One of the current trends in hair styling is steam. Stylers such as the Remington CB4N Flexibrush can be used

10

without it, or you can pop some water in, wait 60 seconds and get fabulous, not frizzy, results. The Flexibrush was a cult classic in the 1990s, and Remington says it brought it back because it was getting 50 calls a week from people wanting to buy one. There are lots of gadgets for hair removal too, from the usual epilators and shavers to more high-tech options such as IPL hair removal. IPL uses pulses of light to get rid of unwanted hair, and while it works brilliantly we’ve got bad news for anyone with ginger or light blonde hair, or very dark skin: IPL only works on darker hair colours on lighter skin tones. Prices aren’t as frightening as they used to be - for example, the £350 Philips Lumea SC2004/11 is currently on sale for a more reasonable £219 - and you can use them anywhere. Some models are even okay to use on your face. The downside is that they can take some time, so for example you should allow half an hour to do your legs. IPL is available for men too, although they aren’t recommended for use on your face or on anything more sensitive than the bikini line. Devices for men or sold as unisex devices tend to be

more expensive - for example, the Remington i-Light Pro is £299 and the Philips Lumea for Men is £350 - but they do work, provided you don’t have ginger or light blond hair. A big advantage for men is that unlike other hair removal methods, IPL doesn’t have stubbly regrowth, irritate your skin or lead to ingrowing hairs. There are plenty of grooming gadgets for men too. Facebook is full of ads for innovative razors and gadgets such as the £19 RazorPit Blade Sharpener. For hair removal elsewhere there’s no shortage of electric groomers, shavers and combined head and body trimmers, but shop around: recommended retail prices can be hilariously high, but retailers often sell the kits at huge discounts. That applies to women too: beauty gadgets vary wildly in price between retailers. It’s worth picking a favourite and using a comparison site such as pricespy.co.uk to make sure that looking good won’t be bad for your bank balance.

Finance It May Not Be Too Late To Make A Claim For Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) By Ann Haldon

Finance

• They told you the loan would be more expensive if you didn’t sign up for PPI.

According to ‘Which?’ the banks have written to 5.5 million customers, letting them know they might have been mis-sold PPI and offering three years in which to make a claim. Although some of these letters were sent in 2013, people are still successfully claiming PPI from banks and other lenders. A potential final deadline of June 2019 has also been announced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). If this is confirmed, it offers plenty of time to write to lenders and recover the money that should never have been taken from you. Could you have been missold PPi? PPI could have been mis-sold to you in a number of ways, including these scenarios: • You were pressured by the salesperson, or told it was compulsory. • You were self-employed, unemployed, or retired when the policy was taken out. • You had a pre-existing medical problem. • A clear explanation was not given of how much PPI you were going to pay, or if it was included in the total loan quote. • You already had cover in place within another policy – life insurance, for example. • You were not informed of the ‘cooling-off’ period.

12

ContaCting the lender If you no longer have your loan agreement, write to or phone the company concerned. Many larger financial organisations will be able to tell you over the phone whether or not you’ve been sold Payment Protection Insurance. You can also request a copy of your original agreement. Some companies can deal with your entire claim by phone, or online. The Financial Ombudsman Service also has an online questionnaire, and allows you to upload any supporting documents. Otherwise, you should print it off and sent it by recorded delivery after taking a copy for yourself. When the ComPany rePlies you receive a positive response Regular premiums Credit cards and mortgages generally had a regular PPI premium attached, rather than one single premium. If this was the case, you should receive a refund for the premiums paid. If interest had been added, this amount should also be refunded. Single premiums Single PPI premiums were often paid in relation to personal loans and finance agreements. How much you receive depends on whether the loan is still in force: • If your loan is ongoing, the lender will calculate the monthly amount you should have been paying (minus the PPI), and this will be deducted from the total amount

outstanding. • If the loan has been repaid in full, you’ll receive a refund for the amounts you paid. The lender should also calculate a new redemption figure as though the PPI had never been paid, and repay the difference between this and the amount you actually repaid on redemption. if the Claim is rejeCted Should there be no response from the lender within eight weeks, they reject your claim, or you are unhappy with the refunded amount, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service for a decision. This must be done within six months of the lender’s final response to you. It may take up to two years to reach a decision, and any interim offers made by the lender will be forwarded to you. If you’re not happy with the final outcome, you can request that an official ombudsman reviews your case for a second opinion. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ business-36950803 http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/reclaim/ppi-loaninsurance#how http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/cardsloans/article1606455/Reclaim-PPI-premiumspayment-protection-insurance. html https://www.fca.org.uk/consumers/ payment-protection-insurance/ claim-mis-sold-ppi http://www.which.co.uk/consumerrights/advice/i-think-ive-been-missold-ppi-what-should-i-do http://www.which.co.uk/consumerrights/advice/how-to-reclaim-missold-ppi

What changes to apprenticeships mean for business

The way that apprenticeships are funded and managed is changing, with lots of new rules coming into effect in April 2017. The changes centre around three main areas: the apprenticeship levy and apprenticeship training and standards. Philippa Batting, Managing Director, Buckinghamshire Business First

Why apprenticeships? Apprenticeships are a way for employers to up-skill their current employees, future proof their workforce and support people of all ages to get experience of the workplace. Apprentices can be current employees or somebody new to the organisation. Apprenticeships are not just for the young, inexperienced or un-skilled, nor are they an inferior career path compared with college or university. The benefits are well-founded: 70% of employers say that apprenticeships improved their product quality and service. The apprenticeship levy

Employers who have not paid into the levy will pay 10% of the total cost of an apprenticeship, with the government paying the other 90%. What are apprenticeship standards?

From April 6th 2017 employers with a payroll above ÂŁ3 million will pay a 0.5% levy on their total pay bill. The levy will be paid by approximately 1.3% of all businesses.

Apprenticeship standards describe the skills and knowledge that an individual needs to be fully competent in an occupation, with an end assessment ensuring the individual is ready to become a full member of staff.

Apprenticeship training

Our guide to apprenticeship changes

Employers will negotiate with training providers as to how much they will spend on an apprenticeship.

Buckinghamshire Business First has produced a thorough overview of the changes and what they mean for businesses.

Read My Lips

Lip-reading can help you to make the most of your hearing. Many people leave developing the skill of lip-reading too late and think of it as a last resort. It is far from that – lip-reading is an essential skill for everyone to use – from those with a slight hearing loss to those with profound losses. Lip -reading can be a useful tool in anyone’s acoustic toolbox. In the USA it is becoming popular with people who have very mild high frequency losses to help with listening to conversation in background noise. With a few key lip reading skills these challenging listening situations become far less stressful and allow one to fully participate in the conversation. Lip-reading is seeing the sound of speech - it is not like reading a book - you do not see every word. In fact, only about 30% of words have some sort of shape on the lips. It is not just about reading lips, it is about appreciating the context of a conversation and reading body language and then putting all three elements together to form the full picture. It is quite an art. People that have been deaf for a very long time, nearly always have developed the skill naturally.

There is a scientific phenomenon called the McQurk effect that proves everyone hears with their eyes to certain extent naturally. Sight is the primary sense and hearing, touch and smell are all secondary senses, therefore your brain can often let visual clues overrule aural information. The visual information a person gets from seeing a person speak changes the way they hear the sound. There are a number of video examples available online to demonstrate this phenomenon - simply type the McQurk effect into google to see for yourself.

As soon as anyone with a hearing loss arrives anywhere, they need to find out immediately the subject of the conversation - then they are in with a chance. Once you know the gist of something you can use your common sense and natural intelligence to help you work out the parts you cannot lip-read. Lip-readers find anticipation very helpful, if they can lip read part of a sentence, they can often work out the rest. Everybody uses facial expressions and body language, often without realising they are doing so. When reading lips these can give vital clues as to whether someone is happy, sad, cross, in a hurry or bored.

Lip-reading is a life skill - you can never start early enough , Aston Hearing Services, Amersham encourage all hearing aids wearers and non-hearing aids wearers alike to undertake a course to develop this lifelong skill. Lip-reading tutors, Molly Berry and Judy Perry, make the classes light-hearted, fun and a pleasurable experience with the emphasis on enjoyment. With this approach the classes can be more of a social experience with the opportunity to mix with like-minded individuals, make some new friends and pick up some valuable communication tips along the way.

Date for your Diary - Friday 7th April 2017 - Freetime Friday Drop-in Coffee Morning with a special talk on Lip-reading - 10am till 12noon at St Mary’s Church Rooms, Old Amersham. Open to all - Free to attend - Refreshments provided. Audiologists and lip-reading tutors on hand to provide qualified advice and personal life experiences. Rural Crime Month of action on:

T

he Thames Valley Police Rural Partnership is launching a month of action in order to further combat crime in rural areas.

The campaign, which will run throughout this month, will be focusing on combating crimes which affect rural businesses in the Thames Valley, particularly burglaries at non-residential properties such as farm outbuildings, storage units and stables. The campaign is being undertaken by Thames Valley Police alongside its partner agencies. In addition, the Force will continue to work with residents in rural areas who fall victim to burglaries and other crimes. Inspector Andy Thompson of Neighbourhood Policing and Partnerships, who is spearheading the campaign, said: “The Thames Valley area has one of the largest rural populations in the country, and there are many businesses operating within it. This month of action is designed to work against those who target businesses in rural areas, especially those who aim to carry out burglaries at these locations. Rural businesses, including farms, are often targeted by thieves for their equipment, and the costs of being burgled can be very high for business owners. We want to highlight the impact that crime can have on businesses in rural areas, and do everything we can to disrupt those who aim to aim to commit it.” Among the activities taking place this month will be: • A series of property marking events across the region in collaboration with partners such as Datatag and Young Farmers. • Proactive and covert operations taking place in rural locations throughout the Thames Valley. • An online question and answer session on 23 February with police officers and partners answering rural crime questions from members of the public. • Updates on social media using the hashtag #TVPRural, with statistics and videos being shared throughout the month. For a full programme of planned activities, and to find out how you can support the campaign, go to http://releasd.cThom/0904

Domestic abuse – recognise the signs Over their lifetime, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experienced some form of domestic abuse (Office of National Statistics, 2014). This means that someone you know - a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour could be at risk. This month Citizens Advice Chiltern looks at gender violence and abuse (GVA), and how you can recognise the signs. Q

I noticed my sister seems frightened and less confident. What can I do if I think she may be experiencing abuse?

A

If you think a family member or friend may be experiencing domestic abuse:  Pay attention to changes in behaviour  Start a conversation  Listen, support and believe  Suggest further help Physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse is never OK and never the victim’s fault. Your local adviser at Citizens Advice Chiltern can help identify the problem and explore available options. Call 01494 545991 or check our website to find your local office for drop ins or appointments. You can also get help from the following: Wycombe Women’s Aid 01494 461367 National Domestic Violence Helpline 0808 2000 247 Rape Crisis (Wycombe, Chiltern and South Bucks) 01494 462222

Q

I am seeing an adviser at Citizens Advice about a debt problem but I’m finding it difficult to get my head round it as my partner is being nasty to me. What should I do?

A

Gender violence and abuse is often a hidden part of the reason why someone seeks help at Citizens Advice. It can be a factor in any enquiry, for instance, about debt, benefits, housing or relationships. Advisers are trained to give clients the opportunity to disclose gender violence or abuse including financial abuse. This can help empower clients and further options for help can be explored. EESE ETURNS Reese Witherspoon is back, and this time, she’s in control.

“I want to be

able to express myself – to create shows like this to show how important women are in our world,” declares a radiant Reese Witherspoon about her latest project – Big Little Lies – a new seven-part HBO series based on the eponymous best-seller by Australian novelist Liane Moriarty. Set in an affluent seaside town along the coast of California, the dramedy lifts the veil on the seemingly perfect lives of a group of mothers – revealing love trysts, lies and maybe even murder. “I feel like it was such a unique opportunity to have women at every age and of every colour talking about motherhood. That is the common denominator.” she says. As the mother of Ava, 17, and Deacon, 13, – from her first marriage to Ryan Philippe – plus Tennessee, four, with husband Jim Toth, the 40-year-old is keen to 38 Please mention Local when responding to adverts promote an authentic andBeaconsfield sincere portrait of women with children.

“What was great about reading the novel for the first time is that I saw myself in different stages of motherhood all through my life,” chirps Witherspoon. “I was a mum at 22, I’ve been divorced, I’ve been re-married... they showed every spectrum and colour of a woman’s life.” So how does an A-list superstar go about casting a gang of gorgeous, glamorous women? By calling on her equally fabulous Hollywood pals, of course. Initially approaching Nicole Kidman to co-produce, it was decided at the request of writer Moriarty that Kidman and Witherspoon would both produce and star in the show, playing Celeste and Madeline respectively, along with Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoë Kravitz. “I’ve had so many conversations over the years with very talented actress friends, and I constantly see women of incredible talent playing wives and girlfriends in thankless parts. I’d just had enough... you can’t imagine the level of exasperation that comes with having to compete for terrible parts in terrible movies,” she says, throwing her hands up. “For 25 years, I’ve been the only woman on set. They call it the Smurfette Syndrome: there’s 100 male Smurfs around and only one woman. But together with Nicole and Laura, we nurtured each other’s performances. It’s really a collective performance for all of us.”

co-star Phillippe, after rumours of his repeated infidelity, also took a toll on her spirit and confidence. Eventually, salvation came from an unexpected place: Hollywood CAA agent Jim Toth. The handsome exec swept her off her feet and married her in March 2011. Witherspoon recalls: “Jim said, ‘I’m going to show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I’m going to take care of you. I’m going to do this so much that you’re going to get used to it.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ I’ve never had anybody like that in my life!”

Despite her bright and bubbly veneer, Witherspoon has been deeply hurt in the past and has fought long and hard to stay on top, having struggled to overcome her image as the archetypal effervescent southern belle. The Beaconsfield Archive Project The Beaconsfield Archive Project Committee consisting of Mike & Margaret Grace, Debbie Marsden and Clare Bull and guided by Laura Cotton, the Bucks County Archivist, received a grant of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as monies from local businesses to go towards the cost of training volunteers to conserve, digitise and catalogue its extensive archive in order to make it available to the community. The archive is gradually being shown the light of day and the Society’s web site contains an increasing wealth of articles on the town and its history. This month’s artefact is heavy, with its own story and a mystery worthy of Midsomer. It was given to the Society in 2011 by Paul Wood, the son of Alan Muir Wood, who had been heavily involved with the society in the 1960’s. The sign had stood at the Old Town end of Shepherds Lane until about 1960 when it was removed suddenly. Paul’s mother tracked it down to the council scrap yard and after some negotiation she was allowed to remove it to their home in Stratton Road where it stood for some years until the family moved to Pangbourne. The mystery is that although the archives today have hundreds of photos of this spot in Old Beaconsfield we cannot find one that shows this sign in situ. If you think you have one in your albums from the past please get in touch. Oh, and one further question from Madam Maigret here, when did it get broken? Before or after it was removed, and by whom? Answers on a postcard please. If you would like to contribute to the Society’s records log onto the web site (www.beaconsfieldhistory.org.uk) and follow the instructions for Getting Involved. Becky Field If you are interested in joining The Beaconsfield and District Historical Society please contact the membership secretary, Irene Stanbury (membership@beaconsfieldhistory.org.uk). The winter programme for members ends on Saturday 18th March 2017 at 2:15pm with the AGM in the Fitzwilliam Centre followed by a talk entitled “Honour in Death” some stories behind early modern monuments in Buckinghamshire by Clare Bull. Non members are welcome at £2 pp.
