W

elcome to 2017! We hope you have had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas, and are looking forward to the excitement of the year ahead.

January has traditionally been associated with fresh starts and new beginnings. Even the name of the month is suggestive of this: “January” comes from the Latin ‘ianuarius’, meaning ‘door’. The new year is welcomed in across the world with firework displays, champagne and song. British traditions for the 1st January include First Footing – a Scottish tradition invoking good luck for the forthcoming year – and a Welsh tradition of gift-giving, called Calennig. January is the first month of the year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, with New Year’s Day celebrated on 14th January by those using the older calendar. In modern culture, the physical change of the new year has become associated with encouraging positive change within oneself, whether it be a commitment to boosting physical health or to improving one’s general character. January is a perfect time to commit to self-improvement, after the excesses of Christmas and with the thrill of a new year to look forward to. Inspire yourself by visiting a local gym or taking up a new class, or treat yourself after Christmas to a relaxing massage. Many such businesses can be found in our directory – why not try them? Whatever your plans for the year ahead, we wish you every success and a prosperous 2017. If you have any views or feedback on The Local Directory publications please do contact us - email us at info@ localdirectoryltd.co.uk, many thanks for reading. Bu

QIGONG - YOUR HEALTH

ANOTHER WAY Q

igong is a holistic system of self-healing exercise and practise which includes healing posture, movement, breathing techniques and meditation. The meaning of Qigong is “working with energy”. It is one of the core elements of Chinese Medicine and is used as a way to balance the energy of the body and guard against premature ageing, and poor physical, mental and emotional health. Qi is the Chinese word for “life energy” and is the animating power that flows through all living things, it circulates through energy pathways (meridians) in the body. When one is in good health the Qi in our bodies flows freely like water. The practise of Qigong stimulates the natural healing process and Qi is then accumulated and stored in the body. When Qi is flowing in a well-balanced way through the meridians, the body, soul and spirit are in harmony and the person will feel healthy, full of life and calm and content. When these feelings are disturbed negative emotions appear such as fear, anxiety, anger, stress, and the energy flow becomes blocked leading to physical symptoms such colds, viruses, illness. Qigong is therefore a way to achieve harmony between body, mind soul and spirit and because it relatively easy to learn and does not require and special equipment, it is a way for everyone to improve, maintain and develop his or her bodily and spiritual health.

THE REGULAR PRACTISE OF QIGONG CAN HELP ONE TO: ● Recover from injury ● Calm the mind ● Reduce the effects of stress ● Reverse the effects of ageing and enhance longevity ● Help to cure disease ● Stabilise the nervous system ● Improve and create strong vitality In our class we will learn how to relax the body and quieten the mind, then to focus the mind, breath naturally and perform slow movements which make up short forms or routines. Anyone can practise Qigong as the techniques are suitable for all ages and physical conditions. Qigong includes both standing and seated exercises and standing exercises can also be practised seated so ideal also for the disabled. Our new class will be on Thursday evenings and will start in the early part of 2017 and in the wonderfully peaceful and serene location of Greenacres in Jordans near Beaconsfield.

Ménière’s Disease A condition of the Inner Ear and Vestibular System

Ménière’s disease is named after a French Physician Prosper Ménière who in 1800’s worked at a deaf/mute institute in France and studied the condition, that they finally put his name to. Ménière’s is a condition of the inner ear affecting balance and hearing. It is thought to be caused by unusually large amounts of a fluid called endolymph creating a build up of pressure in the inner ear. This pressure can cause the inner ear Treatments control symptoms rather than curing the condition. Having Ménière’s can affect your mental health and have a impact on to send abnormal messages to the your whole family. The balance aspect of the condition can prevent brain resulting in dizziness, vomiting you from driving and involve days when you cannot leave your bed. and dulled hearing. It is often described by sufferers as a feeling of ‘fullness in the ear’, and can lead on to dramatic unpredictable, devastating attacks of severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Longer term effects of the condition can include permanent hearing loss and tinnitus and on-going balance problems. Exact causes of the condition are unknown but there are potential links to circulation problems, viral infections, allergies, the immune system, migraines or genetic factors.

How to cope day-to-day: Get up slowly giving senses time to adjust to being upright. Take time out. Regular exercise including yoga and pilates to maintain flexibility and strength which can help balance and aid relaxation. Wearing sunglasses can relieve eye strain. Carry medication on you at all times. Listen to relaxation tapes at night. Use night lights to avoid harsh electric light. Use hearing aids that have a remote control and different programmes to help cope with fluctuating hearing loss. Look after your mental health - talk to people, you are not on your own.

Over our 30 years of practice we meet many people living with Ménière’s disease. We have helped them practically with hearing technology that allows them to adjust the levels to suit different stages of the condition. On a less practical level we feel some of the best help we can offer is social and mental support. We have been working together with Amersham Tinnitus & Ménière’s society to provide an outlet for people to meet and share experiences in a safe, guided place. Out next events are:Tuesday 7th February 10.00am - 12pm in Thame Town Hall and Friday 10th February 10am -12pm at Flint Barn Court, Old Amersham. Dental Question & Answers! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all the Local Directory readers. I hope you are all enjoying the lovely cold weather we are having!!! How many of you are going to make some New Year resolutions? Well if there were any teeth related resolutions these Q&A’s may help you!

Q. Why do I need regular check-ups when there are no problems with my teeth?

Q. Can you give me some advice on looking after my children’s teeth?

A. When we check your teeth at the practice, we see things you won’t see in the mirror no matter how closely you look. Just by saying open wide we can detect a number of problems that aren’t visible to the untrained eye. And the technology available to us gives us an additional advantage!

A. While brushing is essential to ensure strong teeth, it also helps to prevent socially embarrassing conditions, like bad breath. The threat of future cavities may not hold much weight when kids are rushing out the door. Sometimes it’s the social angle that prompts them to pay more attention to their smile.

Your teeth can alert us to...

• Possible deterioration in fillings, crowns, and other restorations. • We may spot the beginnings of root cavities or decay on the roots of your teeth which have been laid bare by receding gums. • A close inspection can reveal troublesome periodontal pockets caused by gum disease, and sometimes it takes a radiograph and a little dental detective work, but we may even find indications of... • New decay tucked under the gum line or hidden under existing fillings – two places you just can’t see! • You may not know it, but your teeth may have hairline fractures. • You may not feel it yet, but a wisdom tooth may be impacted. • Your gums can tell us about impending gum disease and your mouth may even show... • The early warning signs of oral cancer. All of these dental problems can be treated and often reversed if they are spotted in the early stages. If you are ever tempted to skip an appointment because you don’t feel any pain and can’t see anything wrong, think again. It’s what you can’t see that can cause the most trouble! Remember ... early diagnosis is key.

Tips for kids of all ages to promote healthy teeth and fresh breath:

• Use a soft brush. • Always use fluoride toothpaste. • Brush your teeth at least twice daily. • Brush your tongue gently and thoroughly and as far back as is comfortable. • Floss regularly, preferably before bed, to remove harmful food and plaque from between teeth. • Wear a custom-fitted mouthguard when playing sports. • Eat a balanced diet complete with milk products and crunchy vegetables. Gum disease is often thought to be an adult problem, but children and teens are also susceptible. Just like adults, kids want to look and feel good, so encourage your child to start now to ensure a bright smile for tomorrow! School-aged children become increasingly aware of their appearance, and the smallest thing may be the cause of self-consciousness. Their next checkup appointment will present an ideal time for the dentist to assess their smile and to discuss orthodontic options. Now is the time to teach your child good dental habits to ensure excellent dental health for many years to come.

Zap

your skin into shape

1. EXFOLIATE.

Winter always feels like an assault course on the skin. As the freezing temperatures and heated buildings sap your skin of natural moisture you are left with a reflection that’s a little grey and stressed – and that’s just your skin! Add in the stress of the holidays, changes in routine and eating more sugary or fatty foods in response to the colder weather and you could be facing breakouts, tightness and dullness too.

This removes the dull dead skin cells that are hiding the vibrant healthy ones beneath, so sloughing these away instantly brightens the complexion. Exfoliating stimulates a new smoother, more even toned complexion removing blocked pores too. Choose one with antioxidants, A, C, & E to nourish and maintain the skins natural barrier.

2. TONERS.

A Toner with anti-irritant properties will restore the natural PH balance and start the skins re-conditioning process. Especially important if your skin is at all dry or weak. Toners are often the unsung hero of the skin feeding process.

3. SERUMS.

The best serums deliver good antioxidants, without being oily. They work deep beneath the surface to feed the cells. Applied daily your serum will encourage a more even and calm tone even to the most troubled skin. An oil control serum works great on overactive sebum glands too.

4. MOISTURIZE.

Except stop slathering it on like butter on your toast! If your moisturizer is thick it sits on the outer layer and cannot penetrate. The result is your skin feels tight and dry. Sound familiar? Choose a moisturizer that will plump and firm from deep within. Key ingredients are Vitamins A & C Esters and Retinol that will reduce fine lines whilst hydrating at a deeper cellular level.

5. PROTECT.

If your moisturizer does not offer an appropriate level of sunscreen within it, then choose a sunscreen that does. Fractionated melanin will maximize your daily protection even on those grey days when the rays still zap at your skin.

Want to get fit in 2017? Back pain stopping you? Low back pain is a very common problem; up to 50% of people will experience it at some point in their life. For most people this pain goes within a few weeks. There are many myths about back pain that often stop people doing the things they enjoy or result in them staying off work longer than needed. The latest medical evidence supports the following myth busters and promotes normal activities and movements. Gone are the days of bed rest - staying active is the best treatment!

MYTH 1 - Moving will make my back pain worse MYTH 2 - I should avoid exercise

FACT - Don’t fear twisting and bending – it’s

MYTH 3 - Pain equals damage

FACT - Recent research has changed our thinking and has helped us to understand pain better and the many reasons we feel it. A holistic approach to treatment is the best option

MYTH 4 - A scan will tell me what is wrong with my back

essential to keep moving. Gradually increase the amount you do and stay on the go FACT - Back pain shouldn’t stop you enjoying regular exercise and activity. If you stay active, you get better quicker

FACT – Sometimes it will, sometimes it won’t. Even people without back pain can have changes in their spine, so scans can cause fear and influence behaviour, making the problem worse

Exercise can help to ease stiffness and pain, build up muscle strength and stamina as well as improve your general fitness. There are many different exercises and activities that can help such as walking, gym programmes, aerobic and dance classes, Pilates and Yoga. These often help you to be more aware of your posture when doing day to day tasks and be more confident to take part in activities. Staying active and being able to attend work and social activities also boosts your mood and general wellbeing. If your back is stopping you from doing these things, it is worth seeing a Physiotherapist. They can tell you which exercises are best for you as well as advise you on what sports can be completed. If needed, Physiotherapists can also provide massage and manipulation/mobilisation to the spine, to help relieve your symptoms and allow you to be more comfortable when exercising. ‘Fit Feet’ Getting into sport Start off on the right foot!

The New Year inspires many people to get their trainers on and get active. Without doubt exercise offers many benefits but it’s crucial to make sure you are looking after your feet. When you run, your body weight is multiplied by up to seven times, with your feet bearing the brunt of this stress at every stride. The demands made on feet and lower limbs can lead to a range of injuries, including sprained ankles, torn ligaments, shin pain, knee pain, and joint and muscle problems.

T

he rest of your body will suffer too, if you do not have the right trainers. Wearing good supportive footwear is vital to avoid long term problems and injury. So whether walking, running or dancing, follow this advice: • Choose the correct footwear for the sport - If running is your thing, buy a running shoe which has adequate cushioning in the midsole and a flared heel for stability. However, if it’s a racquet sport such as squash or tennis, buy shoes designed for racquet sports that give better stability when moving and stopping suddenly around the court - a running shoe wouldn’t be suitable for this due to lack of lateral support. • Follow the 1cm rule - when shopping for the perfect sportswear ensure you can wiggle your toes a little – leave 1cm of room from the top of your longest toe to the end of your shoe. Try on both shoes and walk around the shop to make sure they don’t pinch or rub. Trying shoes on in the afternoon helps as your feet can swell throughout the day.

• Always wear socks - to reduce the risk of fungal infection and blisters. The best running socks are ones that are made from synthetic materials which are designed to keep sweat away from the skin, as they don’t absorb moisture like 100% cotton socks, and keep the feet drier. • Warm up and stretch - before starting any form of exercise, stretch and warm up your entire body and then stretch and cool down at the end of every session. • Prepare your body – incorporate strength and flexibility exercises into your regime to ensure that your body is in the best possible condition for exercise and sport and think about your diet – a healthy body is linked to healthy eating • Seek expert advice if necessary – if you have ongoing foot pain that doesn’t go away, have it examined by a podiatrist.’

Tips for buying the right sports shoe • Buy trainers designed for the activity you want to do. Running shoes are very flexible, allowing the foot to bend and flex through each step, they have increased shock absorption for when the heel strikes the ground and are designed for forward motion. Sports such as tennis, basketball and aerobics involve sideways stepping, and require shoes that provide greater sideways support. • A common mistake is to buy trainers that are too small. Shoe manufacturers produce trainers designed for people with low arches and high arches. It’s vital that this is recognised so that you can buy the right shoe for the type of foot you have. Buy trainers from a specialist sports shop where the staff are trained in fitting. • The most important thing is that your sportswear is appropriate for your body and your workout. Choose a reputable manufacturer. • If you’re training every day, ideally have two pairs of trainers and alternate them to allow them to dry out over 24To hours. advertise please call 01494 725878 or email info@localdirectoryltd.co.uk 17

New Year, New Tech, New You

Te c h n o l o g y

The gadgets that can help you reach your New Year goals

It’s that time of year again: gym owners rub their hands together in glee as the entire world makes New Year resolutions to sort out their health, their fitness or their looks. But while many of those gym memberships will turn out to be expensive mistakes as the initial fervour fades, a few wellchosen gadgets could keep you on the right track all year round. Health and fitness tracking is huge in technology right now, largely because it’s still a relatively untapped market: even the best-known fitnesstracking smartwatch, the Apple Watch, has only sold a few million units. That means there are plenty of firms hoping to win over everyone from casual dieters to mountain explorers. For the latter category, outdoor watches such as the Casio Smart Outdoor Watch are built to military specifications for toughness and deliver accurate GPS, as well as recording your hikes and climbs. If that sounds like overkill, and for most of us it probably is, the £170 Garmin Vivosmart HR+ is one of the best all-round fitness trackers for monitoring your heart rate, recording your activity and tracking GPS. It’s pretty, too - and the Misfit Ray is prettier

20

still, resembling a bracelet rather than a watch. It’s half the price of the Garmin and offers good all-round fitness-tracking features. Over 2017 we’ll see a lot more wearable trackers, many of them odd: fancy a Welt, a sensor-enabled belt that tracks your steps for as long as you keep your trousers on? If you’re more concerned about what you’re putting into your body than what you’re sweating out, smartphone apps offer all kinds of diet and lifestyle tracking - and increasingly those apps tie in with platforms such as Apple Health, WiThings’ HealthMate, Microsoft Health, Jawbone UP and many more. Platforms are designed to enable data sharing from multiple trackers, so for example Apple’s Health app can get data not just from the iPhone it’s on but also from the Apple Watch, from wireless scales and from a wide range of wired and wireless health-monitoring devices. If you haven’t already committed to a particular health-tracking platform, it’s a very good idea to check out sites such as Wareable.com to find out the latest news and rumours about the different manufacturers. For example, at the time of writing Microsoft has announced

the end of its Microsoft Band tracking device, so if you buy one now you might not be able to get a repair for it or a replacement one if it breaks. It also means that if you want to upgrade from a Band 2, there won’t be a Band 3 to fulfil your wishes. Gadgets don’t just help you when you’re exercising or watching what you eat. They can help you when you’re asleep too. Many wearable devices such as the Fitbit Blaze and Surge, Fossil Marshal, Pebble Time and Apple Watch (via third-party apps) can monitor your sleep, gathering data to help you identify the triggers of a poor night’s sleep and the best times to set the alarm for, and the best times to head up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire. The data recorded does vary from device to device and some are more practical than others - wearing a smartwatch in bed all night means you’ll have to charge it in the morning - but the insights can be useful.

Squash & Spinach Lasagne Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes

Recipe

If you fancy a meat-free supper this week then try this delicious filling vegetarian lasagne. Serve with a crisp green salad and crusty bread.

Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to mix. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the squash is very tender. Cool for 10 minutes.

Ingredients: • 1 butternut squash, peeled and flesh diced • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency.

• 1 tsp dried oregano • 3 tbsp olive oil

Steam the spinach for 1-2 minutes until just wilted. Place the lasagne sheets in a large shallow heatproof dish and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3-4 minutes to soften then lift out of the water and drain on kitchen paper. Mix together the ricotta and cottage cheeses in a bowl along with half the mozzarella cheese.

• 200g baby spinach leaves • 250g pack fresh egg lasagne sheets • 250g ricotta cheese • 300g cottage cheese

Spread a third of the squash mixture in the base of a square medium-sized ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of wilted spinach followed by a layer of the cheese mixture and a layer of lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit if necessary.

• 150g ready-grated mozzarella cheese • 25g pine nuts • Green salad, to serve

TIP

Instead of the spinach you could use lightly fried slices of courgette or sliced beefsteak tomatoes.

26

5

Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with lasagne sheets and a thin layer of the remaining cheese mixture. Scatter over the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the pine nuts, and drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese topping is golden and bubbling. Serve with green salad.

• J E N N I F E R L AWR E N C E • She overcame the odds in Joy, saved the world in X-Men: Apocalypse and even survived e Hunger Games, but nothing could prepare Jennifer Lawrence for her latest space adventure…

“IT

could have been an absolute disaster...” said Jennifer Lawrence on what it was like spending up to 18 hours a day, five days a week, on the set of new film Passengers. “But because of Chris Pratt it was the best day of my life every day. It was so fun. He's a great actor and everything happened really effortlessly with us together.” The 26-year-old is no rookie when it comes to gruelling Hollywood schedules, but the space epic posed a new set of challenges – not least due to the fact that for the majority of the film she and Pratt are the only two actors. Centred around the voyage of the Starship Avalon, Passengers follows the intergalactic vehicle’s 120-year journey across the galaxy. The Avalon’s 5000 passengers are in suspended animation to prevent aging until they arrive at their far-off destination, but a malfunction wakes Jim (Pratt) up 90 years too early. Faced with spending the rest of his life alone – except for a charming robot bartender played by Michael Sheen – Jim wakes up fellow space traveller Aurora (Lawrence). The pair fall in love, but soon find themselves tasked with saving the ship from certain destruction. 38

“What interested me about the script is that it’s about humankind and we're all in a place where we're interested in space and we're interested in exploration,” explains the Kentuckyborn beauty. “But the film also explores very human and personal themes and deep relationships, and that is very important to the story.” Like 2013’s Gravity, Passengers relies heavily on stunning visuals and CGI effects. In one scene, Lawrence is swimming in a pool when the gravity fails, leaving her suspended in midair inside a shifting and seemingly inescapable bubble of water. “It was literally breath-taking for me. It was exciting and daunting although I didn't know how they were going to shoot it and it's definitely the coolest scene I've ever shot in my life,” she says excitedly.

Among her upcoming projects is Marita in which she plays the recently deceased Fidel Castro’s lover. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky, whom Lawrence is rumoured to be dating. Notoriously tight-lipped about her private life, however, there is only one relationship the starlet is happy to talk about, with her dog, Pippi. Often referring to the pampered pooch as her child, she says that were she to go on an epic galactic voyage she would take “her baby” even though the animal “would hate it!” Unlike her character, Lawrence has no interest in space travel – when asked if she would consider going to Mars replies with her trademark guffaw, crying “I've heard that the weather there is terrible, and that it's very windy and very hot. No, I don't think that's going to happen!” Of course, when you’re an Oscar-winning actress who commands millions per film and has legions of adoring fans, life on Earth is about as stellar as it gets. The Beaconsfield Archive Project The Beaconsfield Archive Project Committee consisting of Mike & Margaret Grace, Debbie Marsden and Clare Bull and guided by Laura Cotton, the Bucks County Archivist, received a grant of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as monies from local businesses to go towards the cost of training volunteers to conserve, digitise and catalogue its extensive archive in order to make it available to the community. The archive is gradually being shown the light of day and the Society’s web site contains an increasing wealth of articles on the town and its history. To start 2017 I’d like to consider the value of day-to-day goings-on in and around Beaconsfield and what they might mean for future local historians. By this I mean “everything” that is around us that we take for granted e.g. local advertisements in magazines such as Local Directory, the bus and train timetables, the shop signs, the daily changes in street views with the constant demolition and rebuilding of houses; the receipts from shops and businesses, and so on. The list is long so a New Year’s resolution beckons. Do what you can do to record these happenings, take some pictures of local scenes and let the Society have a copy, collect some receipts and other trivia and pass these on to the Society, document the changes you are aware of in your local surroundings, above all think like a future historian and what would make your life easier, and more interesting. Get your children involved, be alert to local development plans and make sure you have pictures of what goes under the demolition ball….before they’re lost forever to your fading memories! With this thought in mind one of the more interesting artefacts in the Society’s archives is the daybook of the Housekeeper from Wilton Park dating back almost 200 years and recording the purchases in her life on the estate. It has proved invaluable in helping the Society piece together a picture of life in those times as well as providing details of the local tradesmen. The article from Local Directory for March 2016 describing the circumstances surrounding the chance finding of this Daybook is available on the Society’s web site. If you want to send electronic records to the Society log onto the web site (www.beaconsfieldhistory.org.uk) and follow the instructions for new accessions. Becky Field If you are interested in joining The Beaconsfield and District Historical Society please contact the membership secretary, Irene Stanbury (membership@beaconsfieldhistory.org.uk). The winter programme for members continues with a talk by Paul Whittle entitled “The Lady with the Lamp” on 14th January 2017 at 2:30pm in the Fitzwilliam Centre. Non members are welcome at £2 pp.

Bucks businesses going all around the world

Buckinghamshire Business First recently commissioned the 2016 Buckinghamshire Business Survey and I thought I’d share some of the results with you to see if they tally with your experiences and to give you a glimpse into some thinking within the Buckinghamshire business community. Philippa Batting, Managing Director Buckinghamshire Business First

One of the topics covered by the wide-ranging survey was exports and markets. The survey revealed that: • • • • •

6% of businesses do no trade at all in Buckinghamshire itself 14% do all of their trade in the county More than half (56%) of businesses trade with the rest of the UK Nearly a quarter (24%) of businesses trade with the EU An equal proportion (24%) of businesses trade with the rest of the world

There is reason to believe that many of Buckinghamshire’s businesses want to go even further with exporting. Another survey question asked whether businesses were looking to increase, decrease or maintain their current levels of exporting. More than a quarter (26%) were looking to increase their activity compared to 6% who were planning to decrease it, while the result of the EU referendum had very little effect on these plans. In fact, when asked what an impending ‘Brexit’ had done to their exporting plans, more businesses had planned to increase in spite of it rather than decrease because of it. New markets, which are gateways through which businesses can access more customers and increase sales and profits, do not need to be the Chinas or Indias of this world, they could be Birmingham or Manchester.

44

No matter where a business exports and how many sales they make in another county, country or continent, there are organisations ensuring that support is always available to assist that business. If your business only trades locally in Buckinghamshire and you want to expand your horizons, or you already export to the world but want to increase these sales, or you’re anywhere in between, help is at hand. Indeed, this is what the Buckinghamshire Business First business support team is made for. Give them a call on 01494 568941, email BusinessSupport@bbf.uk.com or visit our website bbf.uk.com for more information.

Bought a faulty electrical item? Know your consumer rights This month Citizens Advice Chiltern looks at your rights if you have been sold faulty electrical goods at Christmas. Recent research from Citizens Advice reveals that two thirds of people had a problem with a faulty electrical item in the last two years. However, 1 in 4 people were initially turned away by retailers when they tried to get a repair, replacement or refund, despite the retailer having a responsibility to offer a solution. Q

What should I do if an electrical item I’ve bought is faulty?

A

Don’t attempt to fix it yourself - this could stop you getting redress because it will make it harder to prove you did not cause the fault. You may also risk injuring yourself. Return it to the retailer - It’s the responsibility of the retailer to help you resolve the problem, not the manufacturer. They should cover the costs of returning the item - contact them first to check the best way to do this and to negotiate an option that’s most convenient for you.

Q

What are my rights to get a repair, replacement or refund on faulty electrical goods?

A

Bought within the last 30 days - you can get a refund on a faulty product. Bought within the last 6 months - you are entitled to have it repaired or replaced once. If the item still doesn’t work you should get a full refund. Bought more than 6 months ago - you may still get a repair or replacement but you will only get a partial refund to reflect the use you’ve got out of the item. You’ll need to prove you didn’t cause the fault which may make it harder to get redress. If the item is unsafe, stop using it and unplug it if applicable. For more information about repairs, replacements or unsafe items, you can contact the the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06.
