“Too often we underestimate the power of touch. A smile. A kind word. A listening ear. An honest compliment.Or the smallest act of caring. All of which have the potential to turn a life around.” - Leo Buscaglia

W

elcome to February 2017 – the month of romance and love!

14th February is Valentine’s Day, a festival which has been celebrated in the United Kingdom for centuries, with the giving of flowers and cards to lovers becoming commonplace in the 18th century. The original story of St Valentine is one shrouded in layers of myth. Valentine was a 3rd century Christian martyr, whose life is obscure but has been embellished by legend. One such tale told how St Valentine clandestinely performed marriages for Roman soldiers, who were banned from matrimony at the time. As romantic as this is, it is entirely unsubstantiated – Roman soldiers at the time were actively encouraged to marry! Leaving aside the world of romance, February marks the start of the transition between winter and spring. The official flowers of February are the violet and wild primrose – both of which can be seen in hedgerows at this time of year – so look out for them when you are out and about! Falling on 28th February this year is Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday marks the final day before the fasting season of Lent, and as such was traditionally the last day on which perishable rich foods such as dairy products and meat could be eaten. The tradition of using up these foods evolved into a more secular festival, celebrated by the eating of pancakes and communal games such as pancake tossing and pancake races. So whether you are exchanging romantic gifts or eating pancakes be sure to wrap up warm as the cold spell is upon us! Till next time. If you have any views or feedback on The Local Directory publications please do contact us - email us at info@ localdirectoryltd.co.uk, many thanks for reading. Bu

Finance Money Saving Ideas To Get You Back On Track In 2017 By Ann Haldon owned residences around the world. It can often be cheaper than staying in ‘traditional’ hotel rooms or hostels, and offers travellers a vast choice of grades and styles to suit every budget.

If you’re searching for ways to save money this year, take a look at some ideas for everyday savings and special treats that won’t break the bank. Discount websites Wowcher, Groupon and Living Social are just three websites offering great deals on everything from holidays to online courses. You simply sign up and input your chosen region to get a local or national deal with as much as 50% discount. couponing You may know couponing as cutting out discount vouchers from the local paper or supermarket magazines. But the practice has taken on a life of its own, with ‘extreme couponing’ hitting the headlines as shoppers save huge amounts on their monthly food bill. Various websites dedicated to couponing tell you where to find the best offers online, but you do need to spend time searching. The Money Saving Expert website has its own coupon page, and if you look at Supersavvyme.co.uk you’ll find a range of coupons for Procter and Gamble products. You can choose to rent an entire property, or stay in one of your host’s rooms - all you need to do is enter the date of travel and where you want to go. Some hosts prefer to find out a little more about their guests before they’ll confirm a booking; others offer an ‘Instant Book’ facility. Previous guests leave reviews on the website to give you an idea of the quality you’ll experience, and the company operates a secure online payment service. AmAzon prime Amazon Prime offers films, TV shows, music, books, and a free one-day delivery service for eligible Amazon products, all for a single annual payment of £79. You also get unlimited photo storage, and discounts on video games. If you have a Kindle, you can borrow one book per month free-of-charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and also have access to the Kindle First scheme. This allows you to download one of six titles a month for free, or at a reduced price ahead of their official publication date. You can save further by signing up to Prime Early Access, where you’re given the opportunity to purchase ‘Lightening Deals’ 30 minutes before non-Prime members.

Low cost hoteL rooms AnD cAr hire Several websites, including Lastminute.com, Priceline and Hotwire, have a ‘Top Secret Rooms’ section where you can book a top quality hotel room at a fraction of the usual price. All you need to do is choose a location and the hotel star-rating you’re looking for, and pick a hotel from the list returned. You see a description and the hotel’s star-rating; the only drawback is you don’t know the name of the hotel until you’ve paid. You may be able to find out which hotel it is, however, by typing some of the phrases used in these descriptions into a search engine. You can then read reviews on TripAdvisor. com to check that it’s what you want, as once you’ve paid, there is no facility to get a refund. These same websites offer reduced car rental, but you may be able to save even more money using price comparison websites such as Skyscanner, Carrentals, and TravelSupermarket. http://www.wowcher.co.uk/ deals/london http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/shopping/extremecouponing https://www.airbnb.co.uk/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/ prime/pipeline/landing?ie=UTF8 &*Version*=1&*entries*=0 http://www.lastminute. com/hotels/top-secret. html?int_type=CMS_HOT&int_ campaign=CNT&int_detail=FB_ 3_TSH

BEAT THE NEW YEAR BURGLAR

Now that Christmas is over many of us make New Year resolutions. Try this one for a quick and easy way to protect your property.

T

hink about how many new things you have. It would be wise to mark any new items you have received. Property marking is a way to help protect your belongings by deterring burglars and help the Police trace and return stolen property. Deter would be thieves by marking your property with your postcode and house or flat number (or the first three letters of the house name). Then, if your property is stolen it will be much easier to trace, as it can be positively identified as yours. Take a good look around every room in your home as well as your garage or shed. Consider all the things you would be sorry to lose or find hard to replace - then MARK THEM. Anything useful or attractive is resalable. For instance, all your electrical and mechanical goods, household appliances, furniture, pictures, ornaments, antiques and silver, in fact anything can be a target for thieves. New Bicycles and ones you have already can be marked . (Contact Community Safety on 01494 8586535 for advice where to get this done) Using forensic marking products such as SmartWater and Selecta DNA are also a highly effective way to mark property. A liquid solution is applied giving items either a chemical or DNA code depending on the product used, which is unique to the owner. The solution cannot be seen by the naked eye and is incredibly difficult to remove. It glows under ultraviolet light, allowing the police to detect it. If you would like to purchase these products please email the community safety team at communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk .

18

Once you have marked your property it is best to record the details on an inventory form. Make a list of your valuables and their value which can be used for insurance purposes. It helps if you can take a photo of your jewellery and other marked belongings, as if the worst was to happen and they were stolen, it can be remarkably difficult to describe them to someone else. If you would like a FREE UV pen email communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk please note pens are limited to one per household and subject to availability). It pays to show you are "Property Marked". Stickers placed anywhere a burglar might force an entry provide a very effective deterrent, and are also available free from the Community Safety Team. To avoid becoming a victim, follow the guidance on our websites:

Gadgets They’ll Love

Te c h n o l o g y

Technology treats for the one you love this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has been with us for a long time: it was first associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today - lovers would share flowers, cards and confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the flowers might be ordered online and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! First things first: don’t make the mistake of buying a ‘pinkified’ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a Fitbit fitness tracker, you need to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!” or even worse, “you’re too fat!” The best Valentine’s Day gifts are things you can share, such as the excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile printer. At £99 it isn’t cheap, but what it delivers is priceless: old-school Polaroids

20

from your cutting-edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that today’s selfies don’t quite deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations. If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than manmade bonded leather does. There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a massive upgrade to the sound quality. Just watch out if your partner has an iPhone 7, as that doesn’t have a headphone socket; it does come with an adapter but the best option is to

buy headphones that connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop. Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source - iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, you might even get away with buying the pink one.

Caramelised

Onion & Goats’ Cheese Pizza Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

Recipe

This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix • 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved

TIP

Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.

26

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March

Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them. Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. WhaT Causes eaTing DisorDers? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse. • Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits. • Intense stress. • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/hobby, e.g. dancing, sports. • Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality. • Relationship issues. Types oF eaTing DisorDer anorexia nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1

30

in 2,000 men will experience anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possible via excessive exercise and/or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BeD) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old. eating Disorder not otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis. Diagnosis anD TreaTmenT Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food. But how do you know someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Often, people with eating disorders will be in denial or try to hide symptoms, but they may: • Skip meals or claim they’ve already eaten/will eat when they’re out. • Only eat tiny/low-calorie meals. • Claim they’re fat when they’re

a healthy weight/underweight. • Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror. • Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves. • Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do. • Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately. Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex. Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. This may involve: • Self-help books. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change thinking and in turn, behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy focusing on relationship issues. • Dietary counselling. • Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how personality and life experiences influence thoughts and behaviour. • Family therapy, considering the eating disorder’s effects on them and their family. • Medication: often SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). support and more information: Beat (Beat eating Disorders) www.b-eat.co.uk/ For over-18s/those concerned about a child: 0345 634 1414 help@b-eat.co.uk For under-18s: Youth Helpline 0345 634 7650 fyp@b-eat.co.uk

homecoming jonny lee miller

Twenty years since the cult crime caper first exploded into cinema history, Jonny Lee Miller and some old pals are preparing for the biggest reunion in British film to date…

I

t’s been twenty years since heroinaddict indie flick Trainspotting catapulted five of Scotland’s best-known cinematic exports to stardom, and it’s finally time for the cult classic’s legions of fans to get the sequel they have clamoured for ever since. Possibly the most hotlyawaited sequel in the history of British film, T2 will once again see master director Danny Boyle working with his four most famous charges – Ewan McGregor’s Renton, Jonny Lee Miller’s Sick Boy, Ewan Bremner’s Spud and Robert Carlyle’s psychopathic Begbie. McGregor went on to blockbuster fare, and Boyle scooped a deserved Academy Award 38

for 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire. Miller meanwhile set about busying himself on both the small screen and the stage – a performance alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Frankenstein at the National drew particularly effusive praise – eventually coming to rest in the U.S where he has been playing a modern-day Manhattan-based version of Sherlock Holmes. It was during the filming of Elementary – now in its fifth season – when Miller received the postcard that announced the arrival of a sequel that has since sent fans of Boyle’s iconic 1996 black comedy into raptures. “I got it here in New York,” says the 44-year-old. “It said: We’re going to have a go at T2 and will send you a script when we have one soon. I got the script and thought it was pretty good and I heard the other guys liked it too. That was a matter of months before we started. It was a pretty quick process for me.” And though more than two decades have passed since we last saw Miller as the amoral con-man Simon ‘Sick Boy’ Williamson, it was business as usual for Boyle and his boys as soon as they hit the set. “It’s very much the same; it’s about rehearsals and preparation,” he reveals. “Danny flew out to New York to visit me with the script and we sat down and read through it and we’d talk about it and I’d give him some ideas and then he’d go back to the writer and incorporate those - or just his ideas from hearing you read it out loud.

LOS ANGELES - NOV 12: JONNY LEE MILLER & MICHELE HICKS arriving to MOCA Annual Gala 2011 on November 12, 2011 in Los Angeles, CA

“He’s very visual,” Miller continues. “We got together and sat down and rehearsed the scenes and he shows us pictures he’s got boards of pictures up on the walls of the production office. I would watch movies, the same as we did the first time - he’d get us to watch movies together that might have something to do with our story, however small.” All the elements that made its cinematic elder sibling regularly voted one of the best British films of all time can be seen in T2 – including the iconic soundtrack, with Miller stating that “Rick Smith from Underworld has been involved from day one.”

Much like the original, however, fans shouldn’t hold out hope for a fun-filled return for the unscrupulous Sick Boy. “The years haven’t been to kind on him,” concludes Miller. “He’s not really too much as a person…” To advertise please call 01494 725878 or developed email info@localdirectoryltd.co.uk 39

The Beaconsfield Archive Project The Beaconsfield Archive Project Committee consisting of Mike & Margaret Grace, Debbie Marsden and Clare Bull and guided by Laura Cotton, the Bucks County Archivist, received a grant of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as monies from local businesses to go towards the cost of training volunteers to conserve, digitise and catalogue its extensive archive in order to make it available to the community. The archive is gradually being shown the light of day and the Society’s web site contains an increasing wealth of articles on the town and its history. This month I want to draw attention to an interesting artefact hidden in the bushes on the A40 near North Drive in Holtspur. The Beaconsfield Boundary Stone commemorates the success of local farmers in opposing the church and its increasingly rapacious methods of levying tithes. It has lain in this position for 190 years and is placed on the boundary of land owned by John Rolfe and the adjacent parish of Holtspur. It announces to all passers-by that the power of the Church could be contained. In an area notable for dissenters who were questioning the established church and its powers it was a notable victory which led to the repeal of many of the tithing practices and the drawing up of the great Tithe maps of the mid 19th Century, which enabled tithes to be paid in cash rather than kind.

If you want to contribute to the Society’s records log onto the web site (www.beaconsfieldhistory.org.uk) and follow the instructions for Getting Involved. Becky Field If you are interested in joining The Beaconsfield and District Historical Society please contact the membership secretary, Irene Stanbury (membership@beaconsfieldhistory.org.uk). The winter programme for members continues with two talks this month, on the 4th and 25th February 2017 at 2:30pm in the Fitzwilliam Centre. Non members are welcome at £2 pp.

Worried about debts? The demand for money and debt advice from Citizens Advice is highest in January and February. The beginning of the year is a good time to take stock of your finances and think about your priorities for the year ahead and for the future. Q

I recently lost my job and fell behind on several bills including my council tax, electricity and credit cards. I’m back in work and keen to start paying off my debts, but can’t afford to pay them all straight away. What should I pay off first? First off, draw up a list of who you owe money to, how much you owe, and which of these are ‘priority debts’. Priority debts include your rent or mortgage, gas and electricity, and council tax. These debts should always be paid first as delaying payment can have serious consequences such as having your energy supply cut off, or losing your home. You can use any spare income to tackle your credit cards and other non-priority debts. To work out exactly how much you can afford to repay, you’ll need to compare your monthly income to your essential outgoings and see how much money you’ve got leftover to put towards your debts. Citizens Advice has an online budget tool which can help. Visit our debt advice pages at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money You’re now ready to start negotiations with your creditor. Put together a letter explaining why your ability to repay has been affected, including a full breakdown of your monthly income and outgoings (known as a financial statement), and what you think you can pay. Send this letter to your creditors and they will use the information to help set up an affordable repayment plan with you. For more guidance on putting together your budget and financial statement contact your local Citizens Advice office.
