Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption - EOTRH Dr. Michelle Roseburg DVM, McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital
Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis is a mouthful to say as well as a mouthful of problems for some horse patients. Never heard of it? Don’t feel bad, as it was first reported by a veterinarian in 2004 and awareness within our profession has slowly spread since then. EOTRH is a chronic, progressive syndrome mainly of the incisor and canine teeth of older horses in which parts of the incisor teeth are resorbed (dissolved) by the body. These are the teeth at the front of the horse’s mouth. The tooth resorption process can lead to inflammation and pain, as well as weakening the tooth so it is more prone to fracture or infection. In some horses, the body tries to fix the resorption problem by repairing the roots with excessive amounts of cementum (hypercementosis), leading to bulbous, malformed roots. Horses can suffer from tooth resorption alone, or tooth resorption AND hypercementosis, but hypercementosis does not occur without tooth resorption. Unfortunately, the disease must often be in very advanced stages before we can suspect it just by looking at the incisors. Signs of advanced disease might include painful, swollen gums, loose or fractured teeth, draining tracts in the gumline from infected tooth roots, or signs of pain. You might be

able to tell that a horse has painful incisors by offering them the “carrot test”. This tests whether the horse will readily crunch through a carrot with their incisor teeth. A horse with painful incisors may hold the carrot in their mouth without biting down or suck it towards the back Dr. Michelle Roseburg, DVM teeth without crunching it with the front teeth. Other signs of pain could include generally lower energy or grumpier mood, decreased appetite, holding the tongue between the front teeth to keep them from clacking together, or frequently holding their front teeth in the water trough without drinking. Trying to catch this problem in earlier stages and to definitively diagnose it requires x-ray evaluation, since many of the resorptive changes in these teeth start below the gumline. X-rays will tell us what negative changes are happening in the teeth and how advanced these changes are. Similar to when we go to the dentist and regularly have survey radiographs, horses older than 15 could benefit from survey x-rays of their incisors to identify potential problems early. Treatment for affected teeth is extraction. Sometimes multiple or all the incisor teeth need to be pulled. One of the biggest concerns owners typically have is whether their horse will be able to eat without any incisors, and the answer is a resounding, “yes!”. Horses cope shockingly well without their front teeth, as their lips are extremely strong and agile. They quickly adapt to pick up their food in a modified fashion and can even graze by ripping the grass with their lips! One potential side effect of this surgery is that some horses will allow their tongue to hang out of their mouth slightly without the incisors holding it behind the lips, but this varies from horse to horse. Overall, many owners report a significant improvement in attitude and appetite once the affected teeth, which are a source of chronic pain, are removed. We do not know why some horses are affected by this syndrome and some are not. There are ongoing research projects on the subject, with some theories include immunemediated inflammation, trauma, bacterial infections, or a mixture of these causes. If you suspect your horse could be suffering from EOTRH, call to schedule an oral exam with x-rays. We will be happy to help!

What’s Next? By Ann Kirk
January 2021 is here!!! Last year was an interesting year here in eastern Washington. Hopefully most of you were still able to enjoy your horses and maybe even more so with the shutdowns and working from home. But 2020 is behind us and there is a whole new year ahead. It is time to continue progressing our horses towards that ideal mount we have always imagined. For those of you who have been following the sequence, we ended the last session in the round pen by adding objects to our sacking out lessons to get the horse conditioned to stand and wait for our cue before moving or reacting to various stimuli. For those of you who are just joining us, I will review some of the lessons we have taught but to read the articles in their entirety, just email me at info@annkirk.com and I will send them to you. I started the year talking about the two most important aspects to remember when you are working with a horse. First is the prey animal instinct. This dynamic is what causes the horse to over react and hurt you when things happen that it perceives to be a threat to its safety. The threat does not have to be real. In the horse’s mind, it only has to be a perceived threat for the alarms to go off, the panic to kick in and the fight for survival to begin. Remembering that your horse is wired this way will give you a better understanding of how to recondition its natural response to perceived
dangers. The second aspect is the herd dynamic or pecking order. Once the horse accepts you as safe, it instinctively wants to know where you stand in the pecking order. Most horses are not mean or willfully dangerous about this process but they will just assume you are submitted to them unless you step up and let them know otherwise. They don’t mind being led if they know you are a competent leader but if you don’t lead, they will do what comes natural to them. Others will look to assume the lead rather forcefully and, depending on their success with certain tactics in the past, they can become quite dangerous to work with if you don’t know how to change their behavior. Then I went on to talk about the benefits of using the round pen to gain better control over the horse by getting mental control. By working the horse loose without attachments, the horse can be taught to stop reacting emotionally to every little bit of pressure and to begin looking for and trying to figure out the right answer. The release of pressure signals the horse
My goal is to connect you with your horse by teaching you sensible, hands-on exercises that will reduce frustration and make your partnership possible. You are personally invited to come and join this fun-filled, incredible journey that will make your goals a reality!

when it is correct and building upon the correct answers will completely change your horse’s behavior and way of dealing with emotional situations. You can teach your horse to control its emotions and think before acting which leads to a much, much safer horse to be around. I moved on to explaining my basic round pen lesson. This starts with gaining control of direction first. Then inside and outside turns, stopping on cue, turning to face and keeping both eyes on me wherever I am in the pen. Next is approaching the horse and touching it on the face and retreating. Many repetitions lead to sacking out with the hands all over the head, then body followed by adding objects such as a towel, lariat, saddle blanket, tarp and who knows what else to condition the “stand and wait” response that will keep us safe when unexpected stimuli come flying by on the wind. And that’s where we ended in July. So, what’s next? The “Bridle” is next. I want to teach my horse to respond properly to the bit as soon as I can safely put a bit into its mouth. I am going to ride my horse from its very first ride to its last with a bit in its mouth unless it becomes so good, I feel confident enough to advance it to a halter or a string around its nose or maybe even nothing

at all. But I will start with a plain stainless steel snaffle bit because I know with 100% certainty that I can teach my horse to respond flawlessly to this bit and I can have the best control over my horse to keep me safe. A direct pull snaffle bit is the clearest form of communication I can introduce to my horse and therefore what I want to use. We start out speaking a different language, why add confusion by using equipment that sends unclear signals when trying to communicate? For me, the bit is much more effective than a halter, hackamore, bosal or whatever so the sooner I can begin the many repetitions it will take to fully condition the horse’s correct response to the touch of the reins, the smoother the rest of the training process will progress. So the next step is to get a good bridle setup with a snaffle bit and reins. I prefer a continuous rope rein that is 5/8 to ½ in. in diameter. It should be long enough to work with one side without interfering with the opposite side of the mouth. If your horse has any issues with being bridled or if you just want a more convenient way of bridling, get some clips and hang the bit on your halter. The bridle work lessons that I will teach you can be used to eliminate a variety of ground manner problems too, so putting the bit on your horse as soon as you catch it can also be to your benefit, (more about that later). Next article, I will discuss bridling, solving bridling problems and more about the language of the bridle from the horse’s perspective. The better you understand some of this, the more sense the bridle work lessons will make to you as you begin to apply them with your horse. This bridle work will be taught both from the ground and in the saddle at my Sensible Horsemanship Clinic coming up in April. Until next month, God Bless and stay safe. -Ann For more information on Ann Kirk and her Sensible Horsemanship Program, go to www.annkirk.com.

On The edge Of COmmOn SenSe
an embarrassing column By Baxter Black, DVM
Embarrassing moments. Nobody likes to talk about them. Oh, they’ll talk about slipping on the ice on their first date or getting bucked off a gentle horse. Other folks empathize and usually they laugh. But it makes people uneasy when it’s really embarrassing. They might titter nervously but if it’s really awful it makes us uncomfortable. It could happen to me! Like the time I leaned into a car window and asked a new acquaintance to dance and she didn’t have any legs. It was shattering to a high school boy, not to mention the girl. Or introducing an old friend and his wife to my family and calling his wife by his ex wife’s name. Faux pas are always exaggerated when you are in the company of someone other than your family. Cocktail or dinner parties with guests are fertile ground for embarrassment: Halfway through dinner you glance in the mirror and discover you should have blown your nose an hour ago: finding gravy
(dried, of course) on your black dress; sneaking off to powder your nose, quietly closing the door, gently running the water – then you flush and it sounds like a dump truck unloading nine yards of gravel into an empty grain bin. In veterinary work there is an association of vets who have spayed tomcats. Cowboys take a great delight in runnin a rangy ol’ steer in with a bunch of cows at cow workin’ time. I’ve preg-checked a thousand steers – but at least I’ve never called one bred. Then there was poor ol’ Fred (an alias) who was worried about climbing on his roof to shovel off the snow. So he took his rope and tied it to the back bumper of his pickup in the front yard. Looping it around his waist he went up on the roof and over the peak. His wife left for town…in his pickup. Broke both his legs, his pelvis and one wrist. During recovery he was sitting around the house in a cumbersome body cast. His wife had the habit of filling her cigarette lighter with fluid over the commode. Later that afternoon ol’ Fred creaked his way into the bathroom like a NASA moonwalker. He maneuvered himself into position and lowered himself, cast and all, down on the seat. Exhausted, but smugly satisfied with his achievement, he lit a cigarette and dropped the match into the lurking lighter fluid. It blew him into the tub and broke his other wrist! Were talkin’ hot cross buns! If you ever wondered where the word “embarrass” came from… www.baxterblack.com

MAINTAINING TRAILS WHEN MUDDY by Ken Carmichael
the significant investment in volunteer hours needed each year to build and maintain Spokane County’s trails.”
Recently I was one of many recipients of an email from Paul Knowles of Spokane County Parks. In part what it said was: “We have a huge favor to ask of you! Would you mind putting out to your organizations’ members through your social media or other avenues a reminder that Spokane County’ trails are closed when muddy? We’ve been experiencing some springlike freeze and thaw conditions, which can cause some of our trails to be more prone to damage by trail use than others, in particular: • Any location where we have newer trails • Areas where soils and exposure make them more susceptible to freeze/thaw. We really appreciate your help in preserving and protecting

PONDEROSA CHAPTER When I read this, I realized that this applies to all our lands, thus this general plea going out across our state. This applies on all our lands, city, county, state, federal and private. Let’s apply Paul’s ask of a “huge favor” to everywhere we are on the land.
Last year several recreational groups were asked to provide input to a county signage program. Through this cooperation the following sign was created. I think it applies beyond the county so will quote here: Trails Closed When Muddy. During periods of rain and spring thaw, use of these trails leaves deep tire ruts, hoof and footprints resulting in severe or permanent trail damage. Spokane County relies heavily on community volunteers to build and maintain these trails for YOU to enjoy. PLEASE, help us thank our volunteers by choosing to recreate when the conditions are right. If you are leaving a visible tire rut, hoof or footprint more than 1” deep, the trails are too muddy to use Back Country Horsemen is one of many groups that work to keep our trails open for multiple users and we fully support Paul. Therefore, the plea goes out to everyone to be conscious of the impact we can have on wet and muddy trails. In 2020 we have seen a significant increase in the people using our public lands, and specifically the trails. Some of these people may not be aware of the affect they are having. Education can be a part of preserving our trails. If you are on a trail and look back to see imprints you are making it is a good time to select another trail, or time to recreate. We can all do our part in maintaining our trails, even if you are not using a shovel. If you want to help further with trail maintenance and construction, please contact your local Back Country Horsemen chapter.
