shooting she placed 3rd in the world, then the returning year went all the way to win the Nationals in Missippi. Nichole not only trains, she breeds and purchases several high quality horses with the “Whole Package� She studies pedigrees, conformation, and most of all disposition. ast month I spent a glorious week in Cancun Mexico soaking up the sun, zip lining, snorkeling and eating seafood. Thanks to my very social husband I also had the pleasure of meeting a local charro (Mexican cowboy) who took us to his boarding stable where he trains Quarter Horses to perform in the charreadas (Mexican rodeos). Abraham is an amazing and compassionate horseman who competes in high level trick roping events all over Mexico. While visiting his boarding stable, I was amazed at both the differences and the similarities between the cultures in reference to equine wellness. There is little money to be spent on what we consider basic veterinary care. Due to a minor language barrier, I did not dive into vaccinations, deworming, dentals, protocols, etc.; but I do know that the horses had great attitudes, were at healthy/athletic weights, had shiny hair coats, and shod feet (including sliders and wedges). Since I do a lot of chiropractic work, I did ask if he had ever heard of a horse chiropractor and he looked at me like I was muy loco! As veterinarians, we deal with a lot of specific/individual horse needs, but our ultimate goal is to achieve total equine wellness. A horse, like any living thing, has a delicate balance that needs to be maintained in order for their own innate intelligence to function as efficiently as possible. Some of the major areas of healthcare we concern our-

selves with include nutrition, fecals, deworming, vaccinations, annual exams, dentistry, lameness and foot care. I will try to touch on each of these topics briefly‌

Nutrition In veterinary school, the concept K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) was stressed. This means that we need to cover each horses needs, but we try to do this with as few products as possible. If you combine 10 different supplements, it is very difficult to know exactly what the horse is getting and this can create a mineral imbalance. Horses need salt, energy, protein, vitamins, minerals and a high fiber diet. Each horse needs no more than 2.5% of its body weight in feed (for example: a 1000 lb horse needs no more than 25 lbs of hay and grain combined) per day. The higher the percentage of roughage in the diet, the safer it is. Overweight/obese horses only need 1.5% of their body weight per day. It is important to measure feed by weight

Toscafire is sired by Afire Bey V (for 10 years the leading sire at the U.S. Nationals). His dam, Matoskette, was Scottsdale Reserve Champion in English Pleasure. She is by Zodiac Matador who is a three-time U.S. National Champion in Park. Matoskette’s tail female line includes Mi Toska, who was a Canadian National Champion Mare and U.S. National Champion in Pleasure Driving. Mi Toska also earned a U.S. National Top Ten in English Pleasure and Mare Halter. Toscafire is a full brother to Afire’s Vision (who currently stands at Battaglia Farms). Toscafire has a very impressive pedigree without a doubt. He also has an equally impressive show record and is siring foals that are following in his footsteps. Toscafire was last shown in 2010. He

stayed home in 2011 to breed mares. He has multiple regional titles – Top 5’s, Reserve’s and Champion’s and ended the 2010 show season with a Canadian National Top 10 Award. Toscafire has been shown Park, Costume, Side Saddle, and Show Hack. He has a very gentle disposition and is extremely easy to be around. Under saddle he has a BIG motor with an even bigger heart.

rather than volume. I encourage horse owners to invest in a small fish scale so it is easy to weigh both hay and grain.

Fecals and Deworming Fecals are highly recommended because 20% of horses carry 80% of the parasite load. Low shedding horses need to be dewomed every 6 months, and high shedding horses need to be dewormed every 3 months. Therefore, if you know what kind of shedder your horse is, you can save a significant amount of money on dewormers. Fecals are the only way to determine what kind of shedder your horse is. All horses pastured together need to be dewormed at the same time to prevent early re-contamination. Rotating dewormers is important to prevent resistance issues.

Vaccinations The AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) sets guidelines for national vaccination recommendations. Although there are regional differences, the AAEP lists Rabies, West Nile Virus, Tetanus and Eastern/Western Encephalitis as core vaccinations. Other vaccinations that need to be carefully considered are Influenza, Rhinopneumonitis and Strangles.

Dentistry Horses have hypsodont teeth that continue to erupt throughout their entire life. These teeth, combined with the fact that they chew in a circular motion, predispose them to developing very sharp edges on the outside of their upper teeth and on the inside of their lower teeth. These sharp edges can cause irritation, discomfort and even ulcers on the tongue and cheeks. Additionally, they do not have a full set of permanent teeth until they are 5 years old. This means that they are shedding deciduous teeth (and potentially retaining deciduous caps) while we are trying to train them to the bit. For these reasons, dentals are essential for young and old horses alike. I recommend starting as early as 2 years old and having annual dental exams. This way we can pull any caps, give them bit seats, smooth sharp enamel points and prevent abnormalities such as waves.

Lameness/Foot Care

Unfortunately, I could not adequately cover this topic even if I were to utilize this entire publication, but the most important thing to know is that lameness is often easier and less time consuming to treat if you address it as soon as it is noticed. Let’s Keep This Going!

W

e here at “Regal Arabians� are the smallest of small breeding farms. We are a family of musicians, missionaries, artists, carpenters and barn builders. During these many years we have had the good fortune to breed and own some inspiring horses. We started in the early 1980s breeding to and owning daughters of fine stallions like, Eagle, Fire Beau, Baskfibia, Moment, Traditio, SX Saladin and Al-marah Radames. We now own a Bachelor Bey, a Baywatch V and a Magnum Psyche daughter. This year we are going to have one foal! Sired by our beautiful stallion Dana Valenti (Scottsdale Jr. Champ Yearling Halter) out of a wonderful Negatraz daughter! We are truly blessed. We decided to try an annual Open House to showcase our horses and artwork, and sure enough it worked. We sold some breedings and some paintings, expanded our network and met a great photographer. But what I really meant when I said “it worked� is that we made friends, moved the breed forward and really connected with the Arabian horse community, breeders we had never met but whose horses were familiar. We saw the looks on the children's faces as they fell in love with the Arabian horse for the first time, the same as

Our friends Steve and Pam Anderson, now passionate horse people, team up with us to pull off this Open House every year. Steve directs The Lord’s Ranch, a local drug and alcohol rehabilitation ministry, which started riding and working with a few of our horses as part of their program. He recently started a small breeding operation called Arabian Zeal and owns the Baywatch V son Barbaru Kah and some very nice mares! We are modest breeders with a passion for the beauty and movement of the Arabian horse. We hope to help inspire a community of people with a similar passion, to reach out, host fun events, support local horse shows, bring in new faces and secure the future of the breed, or any other breed. I remember seeing Multi National Champion S Justadream and the amazing Polish stallion Ecaho at an open house in Scottsdale Az, in 2004. It was a thrill to see such beautiful displays of God's creation, the kind of beauty that brings us together, it can inspire us to change and to see things differently. Whether you are a gay hair stylist, an Islamic sheik, an English rockstar, a right-wing Republican or a flag flying Democrat, all of our differences sail out the window when the majestic stallion or exotic filly come out of their stall. It is a catalyst for community that is rare enough, in this day and age, to deserve our support and enthusiasm—So let's keep this going!

So artfully crooned by Dean Martin years ago, I couldn’t quit singing it as I headed for the stallion corrals. It is after all spring, and mares, breeding and foals are heavy on my mind. And on the minds of the stallions are mares and breeding and mares and breeding and‌ Commander, my big white wonder of a Perlino stallion, came ambling around the corner and we almost collided. Sure enough I could see mare images dancing around in his big blue eyes! “So boss-ette, I have a question for you.â€? Commander launched right in. “Where do foals come from?â€? “From mares.â€? I ventured. This sounded like a loaded sex question from an inquisitive 9 year old! “I know that! What do you think I am a blue eyed dummy!? I just can’t figure out how that foal gets in the mare in the first place. Maybe through her mouth??â€? Commander wistfully looked toward the mare pasture to see for himself if there were any mares ingesting foals in some way.

I

No blue eyed dummy, huh! I wasn’t talking to a mental giant here either! But then I had to remind myself that we never really know what goes on in the minds of these animals and the questions that they perhaps ponder. I just happen to be “luckyâ€? and have one that could actually talk and express himself. I can’t believe I am having a conversation about the birds and the bees with my Perlino stallion! Many a parent through history has had to “explainâ€? to inquisitive young minds, where babies come from. That’s how the ‘birds and bees’ thing came to be in the first place. It was used as a sexual metaphor of how bees pollinate the flowers and how birds sit on their eggs to hatch them. Embarrassed parents then had a way to kind of describe reproduction and sex rather than a little more straight forwardly. But explaining it to a stallion‌ Let me put it in people terms first! A live covering can be done in two different ways. In a controlled situation, the mare and stallion are brought together at the prime optimal time, each being handled by a person. This gives the handlers control over the breeding process and offers a little more protection for both animals if something goes wrong. And things can go wrong really quick when 1200 lbs of sexual intent is being restrained by a little lead rope while his object of desire is only feet away! Pasture breeding is just that. A mare in heat and a willing stallion (most are) are put in a pasture together and let’m go at it. We think of females as being the “weaker” sex but if someone gets hurt in the breeding pasture it’s usually the stallion being taught a “breeding gentleman” lesson by a pissed off mare! Many people believe this a great way for young stallions to learn manners. Others don’t want their prized stallion open to well placed mare kicks and his whinny going up several octaves. Most prized stallions never see the back of a real mare and are taught to mount a “dummy” and be collected in a sheath by a trained vet. This is artificial insemination or in the horse sex trade called A.I. Most horse breeds allow mares to be bred in this way if the sperm is well documented as to which stallion it came from. Stallion semen is shipped all over the US and the world and enables people to breed their mare to a stallion thousands of miles away. Expediency in collecting and then shipping to the waiting mare is paramount. Special cooled shipping containers hold the semen and FedEx rushes it through the air. Mares don’t keep schedules like we do so they deliver those little bundles of joy when ever they feel like it! The gestation period for a horse can vary to as short as 320 days or as long as 360 days and still be considered normal. Let’s see, how do you put this in birds and bees horse terminology. I still had two blue stallion eyes eying me intently as he waited for an answer to his question! “Commander, when you breed a mare you actually leave a little bit of your, er, essence inside her. This little part of you is like a bee pollinating a flower. Then the egg that the mare has and wants to hatch into a baby foal, takes that little Commander part and brings it into the egg and a foal is started. It grows and grows and is hatched, er, born 11 and a half months later.” “You mean that I’m like a big bee and pollinate mares rather than flowers? And all those resulting foals are a part of me that grew into a big baby? I am so great! I didn’t know how important I was in making foals. The mare doesn’t really do very much does she? I’m the one that makes the baby!” Commander was jubilant with the thought of his contribution. I was just starting to explain that it’s actually the mare that gets about 80% credit for the foal since she is the one that carries it to term and then foals and nurtures it till weaning, but he was already off. His stallion bellows echoed through the valley as he proclaimed his importance to the other stallions and the mares out in the pasture. The mares didn’t even raise their heads; guess they had heard it all before. As I looked at the pregnant mares and visualized the coming Commander foals I just had to smile at what females put up with. Lord help us if all those foals can talk! Confessions Of A Horseshoer I was asked by the author of Confessions of a Horseshoer* if he could use one of my quotes in his book. I agreed. He sent me a copy. The quote he used was “It’s not that horseshoeing is so hard, it’s just the dread of doing it.� My first confession: it was not original; a horseshoer said it to me. Alas, I can’t remember who it was so I will simply attribute it to the Anonymous Horseshoer. My second confession is, I shoe my horse. I don’t shoe other peoples; most can’t afford to have them lame that long! As I read of Ron’s experience as a horseshoer, my own personal catastrophes kept popping up. He never wears a wedding ring while shoeing. I still tell the story of the newly married Artificial Insemination technician (a type of theriogenologist) from Cedar City, Utah. He ran out of sleeves one afternoon, so finished the last cows “bare-handed.� When he got home he discovered he had lost his shiny, one-of-akind, 24 payments, wedding ring! He went back to the farm the next day with a metal detector but never found it. His

mother-in-law was vindicated. She had warned her daughter â€œâ€ŚNever marry someone whose job you can’t pronounce!â€? Confession #3: It was such a good story that I filmed it for my television program. Whilst shooting the B-roll, I lent the film crew my own wedding ring to use as a prop. I’ve never seen it again, except in reruns, atop a cowpie. I use what I call a “punchâ€? to enlarge the nail holes in the horseshoes. In his book, Ron calls it a “pritchell.â€? While he was heating his up to reshape the tip with a hammer, the pritchell slipped from his grip. It spun upwards and the sharp, hot end went up his right nostril! He said he could hear it hiss as it cauterized his membranes. Confession #4: I had a friend who was tightening a hose clamp on a slick pipe and stuck a screwdriver up his nose! I can’t remember if it was a Standard or Phillips head. Another of Ron’s stories recalled while trimming a cow’s foot was that he restrained her by running a rope from her foot to an overhead rafter in the barn. She objected, kicked out and pulled the roof down on top of him! Confession #5: In the lifetime process of learning which horses NOT to tie hard-and-fast while shoeing, doctoring or cinching up, I’ve pulled down porches, cyclone fences, t-posts, statues, totem poles, chimneys and signs saying, “Don’t tie your horse here!â€? The book was great but Ron never answered the eternal question, “Why do some people become horseshoers?â€? Ann Kirk ~ Are You Truly Connected? Spring can be a time of uncertain weather and un-ridden horses. So this article will explain another step in training your horse to control its natural emotional response to the winds and the wilds around it. You have chosen to ride an animal that is in the same division as the white-tailed deer that runs off in a panic as a natural response to most anything unknown. Horses are far easier to domesticate than a deer but the instinct to save its life first and think later is still in its DNA. Let me start by saying that this lesson is for a horse that already has a fair understanding of how to respond to bit pressure, whether you are working with a young horse just getting started or a riding horse with spooking issues. I would not do this with a horse that has not been properly taught how to respond when slack is taken out of the rein. It is unfair to expect our horse to choose the “right” response when we have not taken the time to teach it. And it is much harder for them to find it when they are distracted or scared. “You cannot demand what you haven’t taught, but you haven’t taught what you can’t demand.” If you have followed my articles, you have been doing lessons to gain basic control and to teach a conditioned response to pressure. You may have been through a series of lessons in the round pen. Then you put the bridle on and

worked through a set of exercises to connect the reins to specific body parts. You have sought to gain a soft, immediate movement from the hips, shoulders, neck and nose in response to the slack being removed from a rein. This has given you control of any foot in any direction. Wow! Sounds great! But how can you be sure you have made the connection strong enough to hold up under pressure? You are satisfied that your horse will respond well when his environment is quiet and safe, but will he still ‘remember’ his lessons when anxious or frightened? You need to be next to positive that when you apply the “brakes”, they will stop your horse. And when you “turn the wheel”, it will direct the horse just as expected. You need to have a way of testing your “bit to body” connection to be sure the horse will respond no matter how emotional he gets about the world around him. “present” emotional situations to my horse while focusing on the Bridle Dance lessons I have already taught. This allows me to control how exciting the stimulus gets, how excited the horse becomes and to show him exactly how I want him to respond when he gets scared. Whereas in the saddle, I might need to back off to avoid getting hurt, from the ground I can persist until he works through the emotions to get the right answer. I don’t have to give him a release for being reactive instead of responsive. To prepare for this lesson, gather a few things that you will use. Some of my favorite objects are the lariat I use for the round pen lesson, a twin bed sheet or towel, a piece of plastic (small and large), a whip to attach the plastic to when ready and a saddle. The list could go on and on but you get the idea. Then you will want to arrange them in order from the least to the most scary to make it easiest for the horse. The more correct responses you get, the faster your horse becomes solid and sure of himself. Put his bridle on and take him to an enclosed area. Warm him up by going through the Bridle Dance several times, using just one rein at a time. In review, start on the circle with nose in and soft. Move the shoulder off on the diagonal, softening the nose to the shoulder point, back to the circle, disengage hip and back up. Switch sides and repeat. When he is warmed up and listening to you, get your first object which would most likely be the towel or the sheet folded rather small. Begin by just having the horse stand while you move the object around. Start small, maybe just one shake and stop. If he moves, disengage his hip until he stands still. You

may have to move the hip several times, releasing between each step, before he will stop his feet. Praise him, switch sides and repeat until you can rub the folded object all over him without him moving. You are not trying to scare him or get a big reaction. You are testing to see that when he gets scared, he will still listen to the bridle. Gradually open the towel or sheet until it is full size and you can touch him and flap it all around his sides, neck, rump, legs, etc. and he will not move. Remember to spend equal time on both sides and move his hip over each time you switch sides so he isn’t standing just because he is frozen in one spot. Leading him a few steps each time you switch sides is also good. When he can handle the stimulus standing still, refold your object, ask him to walk and repeat the steps. This can be a bit more challenging. Movement adds emotion so the horse has to increase his self-control. With one hand, you are going to focus on having the horse give softly to the bit and move his feet accordingly as if you have nothing in your other hand. With the other hand, you will slowly create some movement with the object. You don’t always need to start with it folded but be willing to if necessary. Create just enough stimulus to get a slight rise in his emotions. Focus on him staying responsive and keeping his head at a relaxed

level. Remember, it is not about getting your horse used to what you have in your hand. The sheet is only a tool to improve the horse’s responsiveness even when distracted. When his reaction is minimal, keep the stimulus going at a consistent level until he gives you a good response before releasing. The more correct responses you get, the faster your horse becomes solid so take your time and build it strong. If he gets really excited, remove the stimulus and get him to give, relax and stop. He is telling you that you did too much too soon. You are looking for the balance. You want to raise his emotions enough to gain ground but not enough to make him worse in the long run. Never attach any of the objects to him. If he should panic, either one of you could get seriously hurt because you cannot release the pressure to drop the emotion. You can move onto the next object when it is next to impossible to get any emotional change with the one you are using. Take your time and be creative. The stronger you build this foundation of responding to the bridle in spite of his environment, the safer he will be and the easier the rest of his training will progress. Don’t skimp on this phase of his training. When you compare the short amount of time

it takes to teach these lessons with a stay in the hospital, a broken leg or maybe even a broken neck, it is a very small price to pay for safety. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy‌ A Growing Approach Helping Humans Through Horses

“Most horse owners already understand the benefits of mastering the skills involved in developing a bond with their horses. To add these benefits to a specially developed therapy program makes sense,� says Houck. An international professional organization, EAGALA, was founded in 1999 to create standards of practice for this powerful approach to therapy. EAGALA has grown to over 3,500 members in 40 countries. “The interest and enthusiasm for this field among mental health and horse professionals has been growing because they see it work with their clients,� states co-founder and Executive Director, Lynn Thomas, LCSW. “Through this work with horses, people can find new solutions to their daily challenges.� Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is not therapeutic riding or hippotherapy which are other approaches involving horses helping people. Therapeutic riding teaches riding to the disabled, while hippotherapy is a specific strategy involving a licensed physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech and language therapist to address those treatment needs. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is focused on addressing mental health and personal growth needs and is used to help people in a variety of areas including behavioral issues, attention deficit disorder, substance abuse, trauma, eating disorders, abuse issues, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, communication needs, and leadership and team building.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is not emotional therapy for horses, it is a new and growing form of treatment where horses are helping address the mental health goals of people.� Horses communicate primarily with non-verbal cues - the position of their ears, their heads, the arrangement of their feet, the movement of their tongues are all indicators of their mood. Add to this equation the fact that the average horse has no desire to communicate with you or to do what you want. Given the choice, horses would much rather be left alone to eat. In other words, the average horse is not much different than the average human adolescent. When people learn how to communicate with horses, how to gain their cooperation, chances are they will be better at communicating with other humans and have a better understanding of themselves.

The EAGALA standard of EAP requires a team of a qualified horse professional working with a licensed mental health professional at all times during sessions. Standards are in place to serve on either side of the team, with the horse professional needing at least 6,000 hours of hands-on work with horses and 100 hours of continuing education. No horseback riding is involved. Instead, effective and deliberate techniques are utilized where the horses are metaphors in specific ground-based experiences. The EAGALA standard also involves the belief that the clients have the best solutions for themselves. This means there is no instructing or directing solutions, but rather the experiences allow clients to experiment, problem-solve, take risks, employ creativity, and find their own answers. This is why the EAGALA trainings are sometimes referred to as “un-trainings.” EAGALA has a training and certification program which involves taking two 3-day trainings, Fundamentals of EAGALA Model Practice Part l and Part 2, and submitting a professional development portfolio. The trainings are for equine specialists and mental health professionals and are focused on the EAGALA Model of effectively involving horses for mental health and learning goals.
